DeWitt Youth Center will be held at 423 E. Halliburton Street in DeWitt, AR. The fun continues through August 15, 2014. Monday - Friday breakfast will be at 8:30am - 9:30am and lunch will be at 10:00am - 11:30am.

THE DEWITT PUBLIC LIBRARY

The DeWitt Public Library will be closed for the week of July 28th through August 1st for staff in-service and yearly deep cleaning. We will open back on August 4th with regular business hours. We thank you for your cooperation!

FIRST CHRISTIAN VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL

First Christian Church, 1801 S. Grandview Drive, DeWitt will be having a Vacation Bible School on Saturday, July 19 from 9:00 a.m. - noon.

Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The VBS is open to kids 3 years old through those entering the 6th grade.

BELLEVIEW MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH IN ETHEL, AR

Belleview Missionary Baptist Church in Ethel, AR will be having Vacation Bible School on July 12, 2014. Registration will begin at 8:30. VBS will run all day with lunch being served to the kids. UNITY BAPTIST CHURCH YOUTH CAR WASH

Unity Baptist Church is having a youth car wash at the DeWitt Bank parking lot on Saturday, July 12 from 9:0012:00 noon. The church is fundraising for church camp.

LOCAL NEWS CHARLES POLICE REPORT

June 11, 2014 - St. Charles Officer Bobby Hopson pulled over a vehicle for speeding. Officer Hopson asked the driver, John Hawley, if he had any weapons on him and Mr. Hawley stated no. Officer Hopson then asked Mr. Hawley if he had any drugs on him and Mr. Hawley stated no. Officer Hopson performed a pat down on Mr. Hawley and found in Mr. Hawley’s shirt pocket a small amount of marijuana, rolling papers and Adderall in a plastic baggie. Mr. Hawley was placed under arrest and taken to ACDC on charges of Possession of a Controlled Substance for the marijuana, Possession of a Controlled Substance for the pills, Possession of Instrument of a Crime, and Speeding.

Mr. Hawley is set for trail August 5, 2014.

June 16, 2014 - St. Charles Chief of Police, Jamie Forbes, pulled over a vehicle for speeding. Chief Forbes informed the driver, Carlton Hobbs, his name, department and reason for the stop. While Chief Forbes was talking to Mr. Hobbs he smelled the odor of a green leafy, vegetable-like substance he believed to be marijuana.

Chief Forbes asked Mr. Hobbs to step out of the vehicle. Chief Forbes asked Mr. Hobbs if he had any weapons or anything illegal on his person and Mr. Hobbs stated no. Chief Forbes noticed that Mr. Hobbs was grabbing at his shorts a lot during the conversation.

Chief Forbes performed a pat down on Mr. Hobbs and felt something that Chief Forbes believed was contraband. Mr. Hobbs was placed in handcuffs and asked what was the object. Mr. Hobbs stated marijuana. Mr. Hobbs pulled out a plastic bag that contained 6 plastic baggies of a green, leafy substance believed to be marijuana.

Chief Forbes contacted the Tri-County Drug Task Force. Capt. Dean Manis came to the traffic stop and took over jurisdiction.

The amount weight turned out to be 5.8 ounces.

The Tri-County Drug Task seized the vehicle that Mr. Hobbs was driving and cash.

Mr. Hobbs was transported to ACDE and charged with Felony Possession with Intent to Deliver and issued a warning for the speeding. The case is being sent to the County Prosecutor.

June 24, 2014 - St. Charles Chief of Police Jamie Forbes made a traffic stop for speeding. Chief Forbes, after the initial contact, noticed two open containers of beer in the backseat of the vehicle. Chief Forbes asked if there was anything else illegal in the vehicle.

Chief Forbes was given permission to search the vehicle. In the back seat in a box Chief Forbes located a glass pipe with residue believed to be marijuana. A

By Margaret Aycock WEEKLY GREETING: Hello There Everyone! It still amazes me so much just how fast a week goes by. of a weekly one. Ha! Ha! But, I thank the Lord that I maybe can cheer someone up or make someone laugh every week because that’s my goal, you know. I love my job and it still makes me feel so good when folks tell me they like to read my column. Thanks again, folks!

4th OF JULY: I will start this with a big “thank you, GOD, for giving us such a nice day, Friday, (4th) for the annual 4th parade and celebration.” I had such a good time, as usual. The parade started at 9:30 a.m. Afterwards, was an auction with lots of very nice articles donated by various merchants, Then, we had games and contests for both adults and children. Then, came the very good part! All the fresh fried catfish and trimmings and desserts you could eat. Door prizes were drawn in the afternoon, which were also donated by various merchants and members and just for being there! I WANT TO THANK EACH AND EVERYONE (MERCHANTS AND MEMBERS) WHO CONTRIBUTED IN SOME WAY TO MAKE THIS SUCH A GOOD DAY!!! (Monitary donatations, tangilible gifts, food, work services and anything that I may have left out, just want to let you good folks know, we do appreciate everything.)

VANSANDT SERVICES: Let’s all keep the Cecil Vansandt family in our thoughts and prayers. Cecil went to meet his Heavenly Father, Tuesday (1st). His visitation and funeral services were held Thursday, (3rd) at 9:00 a.m. at Landmark Baptist Church in DeWitt (where Cecil was a member) with Bro. Dee Webb and Bro. Jim Albrech, from the First Baptist Church in DeWitt in charge of funeral services. Burial was at Crestpark with Essex Funeral Home in charge. David and Barbara Pryor Hit the Road for First Official Campaign David and Barbara Pryor will hit the road this week in their first official campaign swing of 2014. With Sen. Mark Pryor hard at work in Washington, the much-beloved former senator and first lady will travel across the Natural State meeting with voters, firing up grassroots volunteers and emphasizing the important choice Arkansans face in November.

David and Barbara Pryor, masters of Arkansas’ retail political culture, know just how important it is for a senator to listen and be responsive to this state’s needs. This week, the Pryors will visit Arkadelphia, Benton, El Dorado, Hope, Hot Springs and Magnolia, with more stops planned for the weeks ahead.

Among his many accomplishments as a congressman, governor and senator, David Pryor was widely known for his work on behalf of Arkansas’ seniors, and every day he kept a sign on his desk that read “Arkansas comes first.” It’s a tradition that Mark Pryor has carried forward and built upon, and the same sign rests on his desk today.

“Arkansans deserve a senator like Mark who listens to them, always looks out for our state and won’t cozy up to the special interests in Washington,” said Senator David Pryor. “For Mark, it’s always about what’s best for Arkansas, especially when it comes to protecting Medicare and Social Security for our seniors and education for our children.”

The reservoir of goodwill that exists for the Pryors in communities big and small across Arkansas is thanks to their service to the state and their longstanding commitment to the people of Arkansas.

“We’re very excited to visit with old friends all across this state and talk about Mark’s hard work on behalf of Arkansas families,” said First Lady Barbara Pryor.

“Whenever I think back to all those campaigns, I always remember how far a firm handshake and a warm smile can go in Arkansas. I think folks here know that our family has always put Arkansas first, and it will be wonderful to get back out on the trail and discuss the issues Mark has championed as Arkansas’s senator.”

Earlier this year, Mark Pryor authored and introduced the Medicare Protection Act, which makes it harder for irresponsible politicians to raise Medicare’s eligibility age and turn it over to insurance companies. Mark Pryor has worked to make student loans more affordable, ensure women earn equal pay for equal work and fund disaster relief for families rebuilding after devastating storms.

Obituary James Crowe James Dallas Crowe, 78, of Almyra, died July 5, 2014. He was born September 28, 1935, in Kentucky. Dallas was a retired tool and die maker, and a Marine Corp. veteran.

Dallas was preceded in death by his son, Terry Crowe. He is survived by his wife, Dixie Landon Crowe; two step children Laney Eldridge of Stuttgart and Zach Landon of Nashville, TN; one granddaughter Autumn Crowe Reynolds of Plymoth, IN; four step grandchildren; three brothers Donnie Crowe of Vine Grove, KY, Benny and Tony Crowe both of Peru, IN; and three sisters Debbie Johnson, Sondra Cripe, and Judy Teachout all of Peru, IN. Visitation and funeral services were held July 7th at Essex Funeral Home.

Obituary Melissa Bohnert Melissa Ann Toland Bohnert 35 of Gillett, Arkansas died June 27, 2014 at the Stuttgart Baptist Health Care Center after a courageous battle with cancer.

Melissa was born September 5, 1978 in Cushings, Oklahoma to the late James Tolland and Patsy Ferrell Tolland.

Melissa was the daughter by Love of Gary and Sue Fuhrman.

Melissa was preceded in death by a son; Mason Bohnert and her father; James Tolland.

Melissa was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gillett.

Melissa enjoyed crafts, cooking cakes, fishing, camping, and looking at the stars with her children.

Melissa is survived by her husband; Charles (Chuck) Walter Bohnert, (3) Sons; Clayton Briggs, Xander Bohnert and Bryce Bohnert all of Gillett, Arkansas and (1) Step-daughter;Dakota Bohnert of Ward, Arkansas (4) Sisters and (4) Brothers; and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives to cherish her memory.

Funeral service was held Monday June 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church in Gillett with Bro. John Stanford officiating. Burial was in Gillett Cemetery by Mc Kinzie Funeral Home of Dewitt. Visitation was held from 2 until funeral time at the church.

ANNUAL RUMMAGE SALE at DeWitt Senior Center The months of July and August we are accepting donations of items for our rummage sale. Items may include: clothing, toys, furniture, books, puzzles, etc. The date of our rummage sale will be October 4, 2014 from 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at the Senior Center at 205 N. Main in Dewitt. All proceeds from the sale will benefit the DeWitt Senior Center and our Meals On Wheels program

Obituary Johnny James John James (Johnny) 75 of Dewitt died at his home in Dewitt. Born December 4, 1939 in Jefferson County he was the son of the late Pete James and Burnice Drye James.

John received his General Educational Development Certificate and joined the United States Military serving in the Army, Navy and Army National Guards.

John was a member of the Faith Baptist Church of Dewitt.

John enjoyed fishing, gardening and just riding around town.

John was employed for many years at the Monroe Shoe Factory now Belleville Shoe factory in Dewitt.

John is the owner of the Club Brittney in Dewitt.

John met and married the love of his life December 25, 1987; Earline G. James (known to most as Cookie). To this union two children was born.

John was preceded in death by his wife; Earline (Cookie) James, his parents; (3) Brothers; Bennie, Wayne and Mike James.

John is survived by his children; (1) Son; Terry James of Dewitt, and (1) Daughter; Krystal Isom (Jonathan Harrison) of Dewitt, (3) Brothers; Martin, Rickey (Vickie) and Earl (Cathy) James all of Dewitt, (4) Sisters; Joyce Noe, Twila (Ed) Allen, Lennie Carroll and Mary (Randy) Garrison all of Dewitt, (3) Grandchildren; Jo’nathan James, Brittney Isom and Taylor Isom all of Dewitt, (1) Great Grand Child; Breezley James and a host of other relatives, nieces, nephews and friends to cherish his memory.

Funeral service was held Saturday July 5, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at the Christway Church in Dewitt with Brother Kevin Nobles officiating. Burial was in Bayou Meto Cemetery in Bayou Meto by Mc Kinzie Funeral Home of Dewitt.

Visitation was held Friday July 4, 2014 from 5-7 p.m. at Christ Way Church in Dewitt.

Obituary Cecil Vansandt Cecil Clifford Vansandt passed away on June 30, 2014 in Little Rock, Ar. at the VA Hospital.

He was born on Feb 23, 1926 in Ethel, Ar. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eathel Brown Vansandt and father, Wallie Havis Vansandt, sister, Juanita Vansandt Childs, brothers, Wallie ‘Dub’ Vansandt and Richard Vansandt. Cecil was survived by his wife, Helen Irene Smith Vansandt, his son, Darryll Vansandt of Dewitt, Ar., daughters: Sheila Harvey of Vilonia, Ar., Marsha Burlack and her husband, Paul of Gainesville, Ga., Joyce Watson of Cordova, Tn., Sally Simpson and her husband Larry of Dewitt, Ar., grandchildren: Jason Harvey, John and David Bohannon, Nicole Kitchen, Russell Watson, Irina Burlack, Angie Simpson and 11 great grandchildren. He is also survived by brothers Donald Vansandt of DeWitt, Gary Vansandt of St. Charles, and Kenny Vansandt of Marianna, and two sisters Winnie Cotton of DeWitt and Cathlene Snyder of Ethel.

Cecil was a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church and was a Master Mason. He was a veteran of WWII and served in Italy; during this time he saw a lot of the world and loved to talk about his experiences. Cecil was a long time farmer in Ethel Ar. , was a businessman running Vansandt’s One Stop and performed many other jobs until he was in his early 80’s. Visitation will begin at 9:00 followed by the funeral at 10:00, July 3, 2014 at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 321 West 6th St., Dewitt, Ar. Arkansas Post Family Fun Day Make Your Reservations for Family Fun Day: Reptiles and Amphibians – July 12 The next Family Fun Day at Arkansas Post National Memorial will explore the slippery and scaly inhabitants of the park. Bring the whole family for a series of educational activities on alligators, snakes, frogs, and turtles. The programs run from 9 am to 1 pm starting with a hike around Park Lake. These handson activities are a great way to get outside this summer and have fun while learning.

Definitely not the DeWitt Rotary Club. Kristen Glover, Miss Arkansas 2011, was the featured guest speaker at the Rotary Club’s weekly meeting July 3 at The Catfish Shack.

Glover, who is from Stuttgart, spoke to members about her reign as Miss Arkansas 2011 and her platform: mentoring. “At the end of the day, it’s about the difference you make in someone else’s life,” Glover said.

Glover said her interest in mentoring started in the summer of 2009 when she took a break from the pageant circuit and accepted a position at The Promise House where she was a mentor to pregnant teenagers ages 12-18. She lived in the house with the girls for ten weeks and organized their activities, but she soon formed bonds with the girls and realized the power of mentoring.

“More than anything, I just became their friend. Even though I didn’t have much advice to give them or much guidance when it came to being a mother and preparing for motherhood, really all that mattered was that I was just there and that I would listen when they wanted to talk,” Glover said.

Even though she admits the job was difficult at times, Glover said the summer of 2009 was the most rewarding summer she has ever had because of all the life lessons she learned along the way. In addition to attending Ouachita Baptist University and her reign as Miss Arkansas, Glover considers her mentoring

experience as one of the life-defining moments that make her the person she is today.

After her time at The Promise House, Glover returned to the pageant scene and eventually won the title of Miss Arkansas 2011 and went on to compete in the Miss America pageant. She attributes her success in the pageant arena to determination and her life-growing experiences at The Promise House. “I wouldn’t trade that opportunity at all for anything with those girls.”

Glover went on to say that mentoring only requires that a person be willing to share their time and life with someone else to the point where the other person feels inspired, encouraged and valuable. “I think mentoring may seem intimidating to a lot of people because you think you have to be qualified to make a difference in someone else’s life, and that’s not the case,” Glover said.

The DeWitt Rotary Club, which has been in existence since the early 1920’s, meets every Wednesday at noon at The Catfish Shack. Carl Crawley, president of the local club said, “The Rotary Club is a civic organization dedicated to the betterment of our community through all kinds of community projects.” The main one of which is awarding scholarships to ten graduating seniors each year to attend the college or university of their choice.

Glover echoed the Rotary Club purpose when she told members, “It’s really important to give back to the community.”

FAITH & RELIGION Let the Peace of Christ Rule

Peace is a marvelous quality to have. In fact, peace is part of the nature and character of God. Having peace in our hearts just might bring about spiritual awakening and real revival in our churches which would spill over into our communities. Isaiah 9:6 introduces Jesus as the Prince of Peace. The angels in Luke 2:14 announced peace among men because the Messiah is born. Christ the King, in His great Sermon on the Mount in which He laid down the laws of the kingdom, declared that those who make peace will be called sons of God (Matthew 5:9). Making peace is a far greater thing than simply refraining from breaking the peace. Sharing the gospel is our only method of making peace. On the night before He was crucified, Jesus told His disciples that He was giving them a different kind of peace, one that was uniquely His (John 14:27). Romans 5:1 tells us that we have peace with God because the death of Christ justified us.

Colossians 3:12-15 commands us to let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity. Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful.” (NASU) Letting the peace of Christ rule is not some mystical idea that we could never measure and can only hope for. This passage gives simple to understand (but hard to do) instructions that if followed will lead to letting the peace of Christ rule.

Colossians 3:12-15 gives practical instructions that will lead to having a spirit of forgiveness. If we practice compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, and bearing with one another that will go a long way toward cultivating a forgiving spirit. If we combine love, which is the perfect bond of unity, with this forgiving spirit, then we will be letting the peace of Christ rule in our hearts. Peace is a gift from Christ who is the Prince of Peace. Our job is not to manufacture peace but rather to simply allow Christ’s peace to rule in our hearts. We do that by following the instructions in Colossians 3:12-15.

Please note that in verse 15 specific reference is made about the church allowing the peace of Christ to rule in our hearts. The peace of Christ should be found in the hearts of church members. I love Psalms 122:6-9 in this connection, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: “May they prosper who love you. “May peace be within your walls, And prosperity within your palaces.” For the sake of my brothers and my friends, I will now say, “May peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the Lord our God, I will seek your good. (NASU) Psalms 133 is encouraging in this area as well, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brothers to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, Coming down upon the beard, Even Aaron’s beard, Coming down upon the edge of his robes. It is like the dew of Hermon Coming down upon the mountains of Zion; For there the Lord commanded the blessing — life forever.” (NASU) Peace and unity in His people is where God commands His blessings to flow. pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

An Awesome Thought from Friend and Mentor JD Walt Acts 5:12-16

The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people. And all the believers used to meet together in Solomon’s Colonnade. No one else dared join them, even though they were highly regarded by the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats so that at least Peter’s shadow might fall on some of them as he passed by. Crowds gathered also from the towns around Jerusalem, bringing their sick and those tormented by impure spirits, and all of them were healed.

CONSIDER THIS 1. The believers met together in Solomon’s Colonnade (another name for porch).

2. They were highly regarded by all the people.

3. No one else dared join them.

4. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number.

Anybody see a problem with this or is it just me?

How is the Lord adding to their number when people do not “dare” to join them? It doesn’t sound particularly missional yet the mission advanced mightily. Here we see an attractive church not built on the attractional model of church.

Let’s call this, the Quandary of Solomon’s Porch.

Could it be that the people highly regarded the believers because the believers lived in awe of God? What if the converse is also true?

Could it be that people do not highly regard believers when believers do not live in awe of God? Anytime a group of believers lives in the true awe of God the surrounding community will watch in wonder.

But I guess the big lesson here is the obvious one. For better or for worse, the surrounding community is paying attention.

Attractional churches work hard to make God attractive to outsiders. Attractive churches focus all their energy on living in awe of God. The distinction is something along the lines of the difference between porn and beauty.* So here’s a next step for us. Rather than lament the

When Life Seems Unfair

“That’s not fair!”

Even now, if we stop and think about it, we can still hear those words coming out of a small child’s mouth while playing with other children.

Regardless of the reason, one of them will spout out those three words, basically calling a foul on one of his/her playmates.

Where does that sense of “fair play” come from?

Well, believe it or not, we’re born with it.

Yes, from birth we, by nature, have a sense of right-and-wrong, at least when it comes to what’s fair or equitable.

And, that instinctive sense of “oughtness” doesn’t cease when we get older.

That’s why we struggle when things happen to us that seem “undeserved.” Like the child at play, we cry “That’s not fair!” or “I don’t deserve this” or “Why is this happening to me?”

And, that’s when we get frustrated, angry, bitter or depressed, wanting to blame someone or lash out.

Why is that?

Well, by nature, we also view suffering as punishment, not something that’s an inherent part of life here on this ole earth. Like Job in the Old Testament, our theology/philosophy is basically “If I do good, I’ll be blessed; if I do bad, I’ll get whacked.”

Sorta like crime-and-punishment: “You do the crime, you’ll do the time.”

But, when pain and suffering come our way through no fault of our own—like coming down with a terminal illness or getting hit head-on by a drunk driver— our sense of fairness kicks in and we cry “Foul!”

That’s why we’ve got to step back, take a deep breath and realize that everything’s broken in our world.

Ever since Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, “all of creation (including us) groans and travails like a woman in childbirth pains until now” (Romans 8:22).

Simply put, because of Adam’s sin, our sin, others’ sin, satanic oppression or the chastening Hand of God, we’re going to suffer. And sometimes—like Job—it’s undeserved, i.e., happening through no fault of our own.

Truly, the story of Job in the Old Testament is not sorry state and lukewarm witness of the church today, how about we just start living in awe of God? COME HOLY SPIRIT! *P.S. Sometimes I use the rhetorical move of overstating my case to make a point. This may be one of those situations. Or maybe not.

about patience; it’s about trust. Here was a guy who was “spiritually mature, upright, feared God and avoided evil like the plague” (1:1). He even interceded and intervened for his children, offering sacrifices on their behalf in case they’d sinned against God (1:5).

But, for reasons we can’t understand, God allowed the devil to steal his livestock, kill many of his servants and all 10 of his children (1:619). Later, He also allowed him to afflict Job with boils from the top of his head to the bottom of his feet (2:1-7).

He’d done nothing to deserve this; yet, God allowed it to happen.

And, that’s why we struggle with the problem of sin and evil.

That’s also why Jesus said “God makes the sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).

Our real problem in all of this is with God and why He allows/causes such suffering—especially when we, like Job, go to church, help the poor, pay our taxes, don’t “drink, smoke or chew or run around with those that do.”

“That’s not fair!” we cry.

But, again, dear Reader, life’s not fair. And, so often, our suffering seems undeserved. That’s why we, like Job, must entrust our lives into the loving Hands of the Heavenly Father as we say “God is good” and “God is faithful” (Psalm 73:1; I Corinthians 10:13).

Otherwise, we’ll end up embittered, always shaking our fists toward Heaven.

Here’s praying you’ll feel God’s Presence and Grace in a special way this week, especially if you’re going through a particularly difficult time. May you, like Jesus from the Cross, entrust your life into the Heavenly Father’s care, knowing He does all things well.

May you also “give thanks in everything” (I Thessalonians 5:18), knowing that He will “work everything together for good as you love Him and fulfill His Purpose in your life” (Romans 8:28). God bless you.

She Flies Through the Air with the Greatest of Ease

By Terrye Seamon It’s that time of year again…That time of year when women jump up and down in a Walmart dressing room trying to squeeze their size 16 behinds in size 6 bikini bottoms…That time of year women pay to subject themselves to cancer rays because tanning in 110 degree weather just doesn’t seem logical…That time of year when my sister calls and says, “Where are we going on our road trip this year?” Yes, folks, it’s vacation season!

It all started four years ago when my sister, niece and I packed up and took off to Mount Rushmore. The next summer we decided to go east and see Jamestown, Washington, D.C., Williamsburg and New York City. With two road trips under our belt, we decided last year to play it close to the cuff and only venture as far as Branson. So, I medicated myself for my Restless Leg Syndrome, crawled in the car, and waited for my sister and niece to start singing their favorite “Bug Aunt Terrye Road Trip Song,” Rosemary Clooney’s “Sisters.”

My sibling had made known her wishes before we ever left that she wanted to go zip lining while in Branson. The shopping up and down the Strip, taking in a show, and going to Silver Dollar City were right up my alley, but I had to swallow my heart back down into my stomach at the mere mention of the words “zip lining.” I’ve never

been a sports-minded person, let alone an extreme sports enthusiast. (Hitting every flea market between here and the state line is my idea of a fun vacation.)

My idea of an extreme sport is seeing how much shopping I can do before my debit card is declined due to insufficient funds. Due to my mid-life crisis though, I allowed my sister and niece to talk me into climbing the 70 foot death tower and take my life in my own hands.

The two-hour near-death experience consisted of flying on seven zip lines at speeds up to 50 miles per hour for two miles and crossing three suspension bridges. I knew things were going to be bad when the first thing I had to do was show my driver’s license and health insurance card at the registration desk. What topped it off was when the cashier handed me a waiver to sign denouncing the company from all legal liability. I quickly asked, “What’s this?

Something that says if I die, my family can’t sue you?” The cashier then made some smart aleck comment that no one has died…yet. Resisting the urge to send her flying through the air, I said, “Oh that makes me feel sooooo much better!”

My fears calmed down for a split second when I learned that one of my tour guides was a marine. What’s to fear when you have your own personal ma-

rine who is half your age waiting to fly to your rescue? Don’t worry. Be happy.

Right? At least I knew I would look good being rescued in my coal miner/ telephone repairman costume we were forced to wear for safety purposes.

My fantasy of flying through the air with my marine was short lived when my sister asked, “How high up are we?”

Sensing my fear, my marine looked at me and said, “Are you sure you want to know?” And he didn’t make matters any better when he started talking about how it took him 30 minutes one time to talk a woman down. I couldn’t help but think, “Wanna try for an hour, Hot Stuff ?”

The fact that several members of my flying squadron were children ages 7-13 did nothing for my self-esteem.

When I saw the 7-year-old take off on one of the suspension bridges before they had him hooked up, I realized that what the youth take for granted as adventure, we old people disguise as our “Bucket List.”

Whoever said that we have nothing to fear but fear itself was full of hogwash.

My fear of hurling was soon replaced with my fear of stopping mid-way along the zip line and getting stuck. I did think that once I started I would enjoy the gliding, but that was replaced with my holding on for dear life and counting how many more zip lines I

had to zip through before this ride was over.

Needless to say, I did no flipping upside down or twirling like my marine told me I would before it was over. I also removed my coal miner/telephone repairman costume before we even got back to the registration center. If you defy death and survive this horrifying experience, you have the option to buy all of these wonderful photos of you flying through the air. Great souvenirs of a great time!!! Being the t-shirt junkie I am, I couldn’t pass up the traditional “been there - done that” t-shirt. I had to have something to commemorate my survival besides those photos of me trying desperately not to poop in my drawers.

So, somehow between “We are going to die” and the “She flies through the air with the greatest of ease, that daring young woman on the flying trapeze,” echoing through my head, I survived.

As I literally touched the ground and praised God for sparing my life, I heard my sister say, “Next summer I want to go repelling!” I decided right then and there that when my phone rings this summer, I’m going to let it go straight to voicemail while I hug my pillow and dream of strolling hand-in-hand through the aisles of a flea market with my very own six-foot-tall marine.

A Nation That Forgot

By Michael Waldroup In Genesis, chapters 37-48, we find that the life of Joseph, son of Jacob, parallels the life of Christ. Following are just a few of these parallels: Joseph was loved by his father and hated by his brothers. Jesus was loved by his Father and hated by His own. Joseph was betrayed and sold into slavery by his brothers.

Jesus was betrayed and sold into captivity by a disciple. Joseph was wrongly accused and cast into prison. Jesus was wrongly accused and crucified. In prison, Joseph interpreted the dreams of two men. The interpretation was that one would live and the other would not. Two men were crucified with Christ. One was given Eternal Life, the other was not. Joseph was brought out of prison to interpret the dream God gave to Pharaoh. The interpretation led to the saving of Egypt, and the world,

from starvation, for God was sending a seven year famine, but He would send seven years of plenty first, so they were to store up food.

The pharaoh of that day recognized the Christ in Joseph and exalted him to such power that Egypt was to be ruled

by Joseph’s word, which was the Word of God. Egypt prospered under Joseph’s rule and became the world’s food supply of that time. Joseph died in Egypt at 110 years of age, and there arose a king over Egypt that knew not Joseph. (Exodus 1:8). In Exodus 5:2, this pharaoh asked Moses, “Who is the Lord that I should obey His voice, I know not the Lord.” Surely, this Pharaoh knew the history of his country and how God saved his nation from a seven year famine and starvation under the rule of Joseph. I guess he just forgot, just

like the leaders of our nation who have forgotten that it was the Lord that gave us this nation and caused us to prosper.

At least pharaoh was honest enough to say, “I know not the Lord.” Our leaders claim to know him, even honor him with their lips, but it is plain to see that their hearts are far from Him by the laws they allow to pass.

Because of Joseph, the Son of Prosperity, Egypt became the greatest nation on Earth at that time. Under the rule of Joseph, Egypt prospered. There was plenty of everything. They could even afford the mightiest military in the world. They never had to cut their military budget like America, while our enemies are building more powerful military capabilities all the time. (I wonder why they are doing that.)

This Pharaoh and the Egyptian people

were actually living off the benefits that God did for them through Joseph, but all this was to come to an end. Egypt was to be completely destroyed. Exodus 10:7, Pharaoh’s servants asked him, “Knowest thou not yet that Egypt is destroyed?) America has been living off the benefits that God gave us because of our Godly founding fathers and other Godly men in power which followed after them. But now, America has in power pharaohs who do not know the God of Joseph. They have, and are, taking America down a path of destruction from which they cannot return.

We must remember that God is not apologetic for what He does to a nation that forgets to acknowledge Him in its ways. What God did to Egypt, He will do to the greatest nation on Earth (America).

Eggensperger was the Commander of the Arkansas Air National Guardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 189th Airlift Wing, located at Little Rock Air Force Base, Arkansas. As Commander, he was responsible for the tactical employment, administration and training of all units within the 189th Airlift Wing. The Wing is equipped with C-130H Hercules aircraft and conducts initial and mission qualification training along with instructor qualification training for the Department of Defense and more than 20 allied nations. Airlift Wing also conducts entry level academic training for loadmasters and flight engineers through the Enlisted Aircrew Academic School.

Colonel (Ret.) Eggensperger is an Arkansas native, and graduated from high school in Conway, Arkansas, in 1979. He graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and earned a Master of Science degree in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas in 1989. He attended Undergraduate Pilot Training at Williams Air Force Base, Arizona, and is a command pilot with more than 6900 flying hours in the C-130E, C-130H, T-38, and T-37 aircraft.

Colonel Eggenspergerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s previous assignments include Co-Pilot, Aircraft Commander, and Instructor Pilot, 50th Tactical Airlift Squadron and Command Post Senior Controller, 314th Tactical Airlift Wing, Little Rock AFB, Arkansas. He joined the Arkansas Air Guard in 1990 and has served in various positions including Instructor Pilot, Executive Officer, Chief of Wing Plans, Chief Pilot, Operations Officer, 154th Training Squadron Commander and served as Operations Group Commander before assuming command of the 189th Airlift Wing. Colonel Eggenspergerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Professional Military Education includes Squadron Officer School, Air Command and Staff College, Contingency Wartime Planning Course and Air War College.

A Week in Review From Senator Jonathan Dismang The legislature wrapped up a three-day special session after approving bills to increase the capacity of state prisons, to hold down anticipated costs for public school health insurance and to impose a moratorium on fast-paced computerized lottery games.

The Arkansas inmate population is about 17,000 and is growing steadily. State prison units and many county jails are filled to capacity. The legislature voted to increase the annual budget of the State Correction Department by more than $6 million, which will allow it to operate an additional 600 prison beds.

Also passed during the special session was a moratorium that prohibits the Lottery Commission from installing keno and other fast-pace computer games in bars and restaurants. The moratorium expires March 13, 2015. A permanent prohibition on keno is likely to be reconsidered during the 2015 regular session.

The legislature approved several changes affecting the health insurance system for public school employees, which offers coverage to about 47,000 people. Legislation changes the membership of the state board that administers the system, adding positions that represent school employees.

Other provisions change eligibility criteria, and will affect spouses of school employees who are currently enrolled in the school health plan. If they are eligible for health coverage elsewhere, such as where they work, they will not be eligible for coverage under the school plan in 2015. The new law limits cove age for treatment of morbid obesity.

Also, part-time employees will no longer be eligible, beginning in 2015. The legislation defines a part-time employee as one who works fewer than 30 hours a week, and will affect an estimated 4,000 school

employees.

Teachers and public school employees will notice other changes that are not included in legislation approved during the special session. Those changes have been or will be imposed by the State and Public School Life and Health Insurance Board, and include increases in co-pays, rates and deductibles. For example, the cost of the bronze plan is expected to increase from $11 a month to $60 a month. Another expected change would require the gold plan to begin charging a $1,000 a year deductible. There is no deductible this year.

The system is already using a method called “referenced based pricing” to hold down costs for pharmaceuticals. Under the method, the insurance plan reimburses not for the cost of a specific brand name drug, but instead for amount of a drug that represents a category. Often it is the cheapest drug in the category. Reference based pricing tends to encourage patients and physicians to use cheaper prescriptions rather than new, expensive ones.

Consultants to the school health insurance system estimate that a renewed focus on reference based pricing will save it about $4.6 million a year.

The system can claim another $2 million if it aggressively audits its rebate program.

When health plans negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for large volumes of prescriptions, the manufacturers often offer rebates as incentives. Consultants believe the school health insurance system could gain $2 million if it more vigorously seeks rebates that it has been promised by drug companies.

The legislation approved during the special session and the actions by the health insurance board will prevent average rate increases of 35 percent for school employees. Rate increases will depend on which plan the employee chooses.

DeWitt Nursing Home To Honor Long Time Employee Glynda James, LPN, started to work at DeWitt Nursing Home on July 15, 1972. She has been a dedicated employee since that date. Glynda has gone above and beyond her duties as a nurse. She has sat with many families as they grieved the loss of their loved ones. Many items in the nursing home were purchased by Mrs. James with her own funds. She has also been very active in fund raising events, often doing the cooking and furnishing the items for the fundraisers.

On Tuesday, July 15th, DeWitt Nursing Home will be having Glynda James Day! We invite the public to come by and congratulate Glynda and have some cake and punch with us. The celebration will start at 3PM in the dining room. All family, friends, former resident families and the public are cordially invited.

New Ad Highlights Cotton’s Personal Attack on Pryor’s Faith After Cotton last week sparked headlines for questioning Pryor’s faith, Pryor tells Arkansans: “This is who I am and what I believe.”

Today, the Pryor for Senate campaign released a new television ad, “Heart,” which highlights Rep. Tom Cotton’s deeply personal attack on Mark Pryor’s faith. Last week, Cotton labeled Pryor a oncea-week Christian and faced immediate backlash from the media for his out-of-bounds comments. This simple, straightforward ad recaps the in-state coverage of Cotton’s attacks and features Pryor speaking directly to camera about his faith.

Congressman Cotton has declined to retract or apologize for his personal attacks, despite near universal agreement that questioning the sincerity of someone’s religious views is beyond the norm for a political campaign, in Arkansas or anywhere.

Last week, Art English of the University of Arkansas put it this way in an interview with the the Ar-

kansas Democrat-Gazette: “Neighborliness, the Hogs, religion and patriotism; those are the four Arkansas values that come to mind immediately,” said Art English, a political science professor at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.

“We take our faith seriously in Arkansas, and when someone injects faith in political conversations, that does open up a whole new avenue of discussion,” he said. “I’m surprised that Rep. Cotton would make that comment. It seems like kind of a desperate tactic. Even if the intent was to lump him in with the president, it’s kind of an attack on somebody as a conventional Christian and saying they’re only there on Sundays. You can’t ever really know what someone’s personal struggle with faith is.” [Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 7/3/14] The ad, a significant six-figure buy,

begins running today statewide.
