DEWITT AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY MEETING The DeWitt American Legion Auxiliary will meet at 5:30pm on June 5th, 2014 at Camp Doughboy. The meeting will begin with the installation of new officers for the coming year! After installation, the American Legion is having an appreciation hamburger super beginning at 6:30pm. Dessert will be served.

We will have a speaker that will install the new officers.

DEWITT PUBLIC LIBRARY HOSTS SUMMER READING PROGRAM 2014 Summer Reading program will be every Tuesday and Wednesday in JUNE. This year’s theme is Fizz, Boom, Read.

Young group ages 5-7 years old will be on Tuesday, and older group 8-10 years old will be on Wednesday. We will be conducting experiments so dress your kids in clothes they could potentially get a little dirty in! It will be tons of fun!

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT May 30, 2014 – While on patrol, Officer Billy Truax observed a brown in color, four door, car pull up to the stop sign at the intersection of W. 2nd and S. Jefferson street. The vehicle was traveling West on 2nd Street. As the vehicle approached Officer Truax observed the vehicle hit the brakes, and then accelerate through the stop sign. The vehicle did not stop, just continued traveling west on 2nd street. Officer Truax then immediately pulled in behind the vehicle and followed it west on 2nd Street. Officer Truax activated his blue light to attempt a traffic stop on the vehicle.

The vehicle turned south onto S. Harrison and drove approximately 150 yards before pulling over.

Officer Truax approached the driver, and advised him why he was stopping him. The driver stated that he did not realize he ran the stop sign. Officer Truax asked the driver for his driver’s license and proof of insurance. The driver stated that he did not have a driver’s license. Officer Truax asked if he did not have it with him, or if he never had a license. The driver stated that he had never had a license. While talking to the driver, Officer Truax could smell a strong odor of intoxicants coming from him. He then asked the driver if he had been drinking. The driver stated that he had. Officer Truax asked the driver how much had he had to drink. The driver stated “I tell you 1 beer.”

The driver was then asked to step out the vehicle. The driver was asked to perform a standardized Field Sobriety Test to determine if was able to drive or not.

The driver stated that he would not take the test, he was able to drive home. I then asked the driver again to take the Standardized Field Sobriety Test. Again the driver said he would not take it.

The driver was then placed under arrest for Suspicion of Driving While Intoxicated, and No Driver License, and transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center.

After arriving at the Arkansas County Detention Center, Officer Truax asked the driver if he would submit to BAC. The driver stated that he would. The test results were .087. The driver was issued a citation for DWI, running a stop sign, and no drivers license.

A Thought

By Michael P. Daniel “[Jesus prayed], I have made Your name known to those whom You gave me from the world. They were Yours, and You gave them to Me and they have kept Your word. Now they know everything You have given Me is from You; for the words You gave to Me I have given to them, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from You – and they have believed You sent Me.” John 17:6-8 Meriam Ibrahim is a 27-year-old mother who has been sentenced to die in Sudan for converting to Christianity. There is a small twist in this story in that Ms. Ibrahim told the court she had been raised Christian by an Orthodox Christian mother (though her father was Muslim), so she never technically converted. According to Shariah law, however, the father is the one who determines the religion of the family.

A woman may not marry outside of her faith, but a Muslim man can. It is further decreed that the children of this union are to be raised Muslim.

Now Ms. Ibrahim has given birth and will be immediately subject to 100 lashes, but the death sentence will be delayed until the baby is 2 years old. We should also note that Ms. Ibrahim had been given four (4) days to recant and spare her own life before the death penalty was imposed, but she remained steadfast in her devotion to Messiah Jesus.

Today the very thing Peter referred to (“Do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that is taking place among you to test you as though something strange were happening to you”, 1 Peter 4:12) is upon us though we Americans are pretty far removed from the situation Ms. Ibrahim faces. It is easy for us to proclaim Christ in America because there is no real threat. We can also pray for Ms. Ibrahim because this, too, poses no real risk to us. And pray we must because this will be the only way our “sister” will be spared her life; and if she is finally executed, we must be focused in our prayers to try and understand. For our trial by fire may be soon forthcoming.

Jesus never promised us the things we have come to expect, but He did assure us that if we stand for Him in this life He will stand for us in the life to come.

Ms. Ibrahim is worthy of our prayers, but we must also pray for ourselves – because I suspect very few of us, not having been truly tested, could withstand this kind of pressure. What she faces is inconceivable to us, but Peter reminded his audience there is nothing “strange” about what they surely faced and what Ms. Ibrahim is facing now.

Our Almighty God had to hammer Pharaoh more than once to get him to release the Israelites. May we pray the psalm, “Let God rise up, let His enemies be scattered! Let those who hate Him flee before Him” (68:1) on behalf of Ms. Ibrahim and so many others around the world who face this almost daily. Perhaps this is why we were born in this country – so we could be free to pray in their behalf.

Rosie Eilers

Ruby Vinson Agee, 86, of DeWitt, died Thursday, May 15, 2014 at Crestpark Nursing Home in DeWitt. She was born in Clarendon on Dec. 3, 1927, to Jess Frost and Carrie Askren Frost. She was a member of St. Charles First United Methodist Church, and had been a resident of DeWitt for the past 20 years and was a homemaker. She liked to travel and play softball in her younger years, and was an avid Razorback and Yankees fan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Jess and Carrie Frost; husbands, Frank Vinson and Darrell Agee; two sons, Chuck Vinson and Bud Vinson; three daughters, Durice King, Patsy Whiteside, and Avon Collier; and two brothers, Earl Dixon and Willie Mac Dixon.

Survivors are two sons, Earl Sweeney of Wheatley and Frank Vinson (Donna) of Judsonia; two daughters, Diane Cameron of Gillett, and Marsha Pike (Donald) of DeWItt; a sister, Martha Brown of Olive Branch, Miss.; 24 grandchildren; several great grandchildren; and several great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were May 19 at Fowler Funeral Home Chapel in Brinkley with Bro. Daniel Kirkpatrick and Bro. Timmy Sparks officiating. Burial was in Oaklawn Cemetery at Brinkley by Fowler Funeral Home of Brinkley. Pallbearers were Eric Sparks, David Cameron, Bradley Cameron, John Cameron, Jeffrey Vinson, and A.J. Pike. Honorary pallbearers were Larry McDaniel, Keith Vinson, and Franklin Sweeney.

Bernice Cook Wilder, 93, of DeWitt, died Saturday, May 24, 2014 at the DeWitt City Hospital.

Born September 25, 1920 in St. Charles, AR, she was the daughter of the late Charlie Cook and Aza Lee Bailey.

Bernice accepted Christ at an early age and united with the Tabernacle M.B.C.. Bernice attended school in DeWitt, she was active in many activities, and enjoyed dressing up.

Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; Charlie Cook and Aza Lee Cook, (1) son; Cleo Wilder Jr., (1) daughter; Mayebell Bradford, and (1) sister; Verna Lee Johnson.

Bernice is survived by her children; (4) sons; Troy K. (Lenora) Wilder and Floyd W. Wilder both of Chicago, IL, Bill G. Wilder of Little Rock, AR, and Gerry W. Wilder of Los Angeles, CA, (2) daughters; Betty (Robert) Stabler of CA and Maxine (L.J.) Jemerson of Georgia, (18) Grandchildren and a host of Great Grands and Great Great Grands, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.

Funeral Services will be Saturday May 31, 2014 at 11:30 a.m. at the Greater St. John M.B.C. in DeWitt with Rev. Levorn Cotton officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until funeral time on Saturday.

Rosie Lee (Jo) Capps Eilers, 78, of Star City, formerly of DeWitt, died May 28, 2014. She was born December 22, 1935 in DeWitt to John William Capps and Bessie Elizabeth Gray Capps. She was preceded in death by her husband, Sigmund Eilers; daughter, Jennifer Eilers Moore; seven brothers and sisters, Irene Vaughn, Haschel Capps, Velma Clements, Glenn Capps, Paul Capps, John Capps Jr., and Darrel Capps.

She is survived by her grandson, Bradley Moore Cameron and great grandson, Mason Cameron, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held Saturday, May 31 from 9-10 a.m. at Essex Funeral Home with graveside services that followed at 11:00 in the Ulm Cemetery

by Essex Funeral Home.

The family would like to thank Garden Pointe Assisted Living of Pine Bluff and Lincoln Heights Health Center of Star City for their care and compassion.

Obituary Curtis Kirkpatrick Curtis Perkins (C.P.) Kirkpatrick born April 24, 1926, passed away May 25, 2014 at the age of 88.

He was a World War II Veteran.

Survivors include, daughter-in-law Reta Isom Kirkpatrick, grandson Rusty D. Kirkpatrick, great grandchildren Jata and Jacoby.

Mr. Kirkpatrick was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Reva Nell Patterson Kirkpatrick, and a son, Glenn Ervin Kirkpatrick.

A very special thank you for all the wonderful care given by friends and longtime caregivers; Lois, Pearl, Ebon, Ginger and Minnie. Also, the excellent service by Hospice.

Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, June 6th at Essex Funeral Home in DeWitt with burial at Cedarcrest Memorial Gardens.

The National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons met at the University Club in Washington D.C. on April 12th with Chancellor Lewis L. “Ted� Neilson, Jr., presiding. Jean Pollard as a National Herald led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. Purposes of the National Society were presented by Michael Lee Sauls, National Herald. Pollard serves the Arkansas Division as Regent and the National Society as a Vice President and National Herald. Plans are underway to commemorate the 800th Anniversary of the signing of the Magna Charta.

Dames of the Court of Honor sponsored a 44th Annual Fellowship Breakfast at the Double Tree Central on Sunday April 13th. Dill serves as a National Trustee and had also attended the Business Meeting on the 12th. Attending the Breakfast were 72 who enjoyed the power-point show about The National D-Day Memorial in Bedford, VA. Pollard serves the State as Vice President.

On their walk back to the Mayflower Hotel, Dill and Pollard attended part of the service at the Cathedral of St. Matthew. Monday evening they had dinner with Dill’s cousin Susan Smith and daughter Sarah.

Smith was going to take them to Arlington National Cemetery but it was the peak for Cherry Blossoms and their Cherry Blossom Festival, making traffic impossible.

Timothy West Timothy Wayne West went to be with the Lord on May 26, 2014 at the age of 61 years old. He was born November 28, 1952 in Dallas, TX, to J.C. and Jamie Branstetter West. He graduated from St. Charles High School in 1972. Following graduation, he joined the Arkansas Army National Guard on a part time basis. He married the love of his life, Karen Jo Ellenburg on June 8, 1973. In 1977, Tim and Karen welcomed their only daughter Tena Kay West Stone. Several years later, Tim became employed full time with the Arkansas Army National Guard until his retirement in 2001.

Tim was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener until his illness prevented him from enjoying it. He loved any kind of hunting, but turkey hunting was his favorite. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church of DeWitt, American Legion, 40 et 8, and the Little Lagrue Hunting Club of DeWitt.

Tim was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Carroll West and Billy Jack West.

He is survived by his wife of almost 41 years, Karen Jo; daughter Tena Kay West Stone (James); his precious granddaughter, Madelyn Grace; two brothers, George (Pam) West of Rudy, AR, and Gary (Virginia) West of St. Charles, AR; nieces Jamie West, Bobbye Jo Moncrief, and Elizabeth West; nephew Zack West; four great nieces and one great nephew; and two special “four legged� kids, LiLo and Belle.

Tim was loved by all who met him. He made a huge impact on many of his fellow soldiers in the National Guard. He loved serving his country. His greatest love and joy was when his only granddaughter was born in September of 2013. Tim was so proud and loved Madelyn Grace very much. He was so excited that he was able to see her born and cherished each moment that he was with her these past eight months. Visitation was held May 28, 2014, from 5-7 p.m. at Essex Funeral Home. Services were held May 29th, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Essex Funeral Home chapel with burial in Cedarcrest Memorial Gardens in DeWitt by Essex Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to DeWitt City Hospital, Faith Baptist Church, or donor’s choice. essexfuneralhome.com

Other class sponsors Louise Mattmiller and Ronald Powell are deceased, as are the superintendent and high school principal from 1964, Dalda Womack and Hurshell Qualls, respectively.

Donations were given in memory of the two classmates who have passed away since the last reunion, Sue Dixon Berry and Billy Wallace. These donations will be used to purchase books for the Cleon Collier Memorial Library in Gillett. The next class reunion will be in 2019. The Gillett High School graduating class of 1964 celebrated its 50th-year reunion with as a part of Heritage Days on Saturday, May 24, at Gillett.

Class members and guests gathered during the day, visiting, reminiscing, and seeing people from other classes who were also having reunions as well as those who stopped to visit with us while they were enjoying the festivities of the Gillett Civic Groups’ 6th annual Heritage Days.

Weekend Trip to Dallas Darla Grantham spent Memorial Day weekend in Dallas, Texas helping daughter Katie get settled in her new home. Katie is a Physician’s Assistant at Irving Orthopedics in Irving, Texas.

Gillett City Council meeting will be held in the community room of Planters and Merchants Bank on Tuesday, June 10th, 2014 due to election runoff. Meeting will begin at 7:30.

St. Charles Under Precautionary Boil Water Order

Although a watched pot may never boil, St. Charles residents will be watching their pots anyway due to a precautionary boil water order issued May 29.

St. Charles Mayor Robert Patrick said that the well broke down Wednesday. Apparently there were two problems with it. “It was repaired once. We found a hole in the bottom portion of the line. That was repaired, and we had water Wednesday night, but [Thursday] morning something else happened to the well, and it went down. We don’t know what happened,” said Mayor Patrick.

The mayor said that no one in the area was without water. “People were not out of water except when we had to blow the air out of the lines, and that took some time, but there was no outage to cause any major problems,” Patrick said.

The residents in the area still have water because the city is currently linked with Grand Prairie Water’s emergency line. “We’ve had water all along. It’s just coming from a different source than our pump,” Patrick said.

He went on to say that Layne Arkansas, who put the well in 37 years ago, is currently working to correct the situation.

The order, issued as a precautionary measure, stipulates that all residents affected should be advised that water used for drinking, ice cubes, and food preparation should be boiled for one minute prior to use.

“It’s fine for washing dishes, washing clothes, and taking a bath,” Patrick said.

Concerning human consumption though, he said, “The contaminants could be there, and that could be a health hazard.”

The order will remain in effect until the well is repaired, water is restored, lines are flushed, proper measures are taken to ensure that the lines are clear from contaminates and the health department determines that the water is safe to drink. “It could be anytime,” Mayor Patrick said.

DeWitt School Board Meeting

By Shelly Faulkner The DeWitt School Board called a special meeting May 27th to discuss millage for a new Middle School.

The Board voted and passed a 3.5 millage. The Board will bring the plans for a new Middle School in Sep-

tember to voters for approval.

Also, board members excepted the resignations of Dena Bly, Lana Kirkpatrick, Debbie Childers, and Deane Bisswanger.

Spirit of ‘76 4-H Club

The Spirit of ’76 4-H Club enjoyed a 4-H Fun Day on May 21 at the Extension Office. Stacey Cox welcomed everyone and the pledges were led by Jaylen Phillips and Miranda Nelson. 4-H members enjoyed refreshments of hot dogs, chips and drinks. James Mahan, CEA-Agriculture led the group in a game of Kick Ball. Following the game, a special treat of ice cream sandwiches was enjoyed by all. Election Day Quickly Approaching Again

By Terrye Seamon Not everybody has a second chance to make a first impression, but Thomas “Eddie” Best and Ryan Eagle will during a runoff election June 10 for Arkansas County Judge.

The primary election May 20 resulted in Best receiving 1,024 votes which was 43.39 percent of the total 2,819 votes, while Eagle received 708, or 30 percent, of the vote. Although these numbers were not enough to declare a winner, they did mean that incumbent Arkansas County Judge Glenn “Sonny” Cox, who only received 628 votes (26.61 percent), lost the position he has held for the past 22 years.

The May 20th election also resulted in a runoff between Republican candidates David Sterling and Leslie Rutledge for Attorney General.

Early voting began June 3 and will continue through Monday, June 9, at the Arkansas County Courthouses in DeWitt and Stuttgart with polls being open from 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. On Election Day Tuesday, June 10, polls will be open from at 7:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m.

Residents of DeWitt Wards 1, 2, and 3, Lagrue, Point Deluce, Bayou Meto, Brewer and Garland will report to the DeWitt Community Center to cast their ballots. Information concerning absentee voting is available at the Arkansas County Clerk’s office in DeWitt (870) 946-4349.

His Ways Are Everlasting

By William Wood Habakhuk 3:6 What God has done at one time, He will do again.

Man’s ways are changeable, but God’s ways are Everlasting. There are many reasons for God giving us this comforting truth. We will name some of them.

The Lord’s Ways are the result of wise deliberations.

He orders all things “according to the Counsel of His Own Will. Human actions are often the hasty result of passion, or fear, and are followed by regret, but nothing can take our God by surprise, or happen different than He has forseen. His ways are the result of His Perfect Character. He has Perfect Knowledge, Perfect Wisdom, Perfect Patience, Perfect Love, and Perfect Power! “He changes not,” this is His statement about Himself! And this being exactly the truth, then His ways must remain exactly the same.

Is He Eternally Just, Gracious, Faithful, Wise and Tender toward His creation? Then He must remain the same until the end.

Human beings act according to their nature. When those natures change their conduct changes also. But Scripture says that God “Cannot know the shadow of turning.” His ways will last everlastingly the same!

And the powerful revelation is that there could never be any reason for Him to change. A state of being perfect cannot be changed, without the chance being a mistake. You cannot improve on Perfection.

When God speaks mountains tremble, the sun and moon stand still, and seas roll back. When God moves for the Salvation of His people. “Who can stay His Hand or say “What does Thou?” God’s ways are the showing forth of the Eternal Principles of what is right! Then how can one of us human beings ever accuse Him of having a wrong thought, or taking wrong action?

My thought is this, how could God create a person, subject him to vanity, and then not give him a chance at salvation? This would be for our God to change His perfect nature, and if this was to ever happen we would have no foundation for our faith at all. A man can have too much money for his own good, or too much social honor, but he can’t have too much Grace.

He may be subjected to too much food and grow fat, but there is no fear of us becoming too full of Grace, and so we preach that our God is Gracious, and that means the more sinful we are the more Grace He offers.

Without Grace we are all dead, and we need the revelation that this Grace will never play out, as long as we have a heart to truly repent for our failures. Amen

First Resurrection

By Michael Waldroup At the First Resurrection, commonly referred to as the Rapture, those who were truly born again (died in Christ) will reappear on Earth for a short period of time.

Just as it was when Christ resurrected, many of the Old Testament saints that slept were resurrected with him, and were seen of many for a period of about forty days.

Not everyone recognized them or even knew what was going on. The kind old priest (Caiaphas), who actually instigated the crucifixion, and with his misinterpretation of the scriptures, blinded the people to the fact that this Christ was truly the long awaited for Messiah. He was still preaching that the coming of the Lord was drawing nigh while this Resurrection was going on, and he and his whole congregation had missed it. So will it be at this Resurrection when the dead in Christ come forth from the grave in this age.

They will be in their eternal young bodies, which will have the resemblance of their earthly body in their youth. They will appear unto many, but not everyone.

No doubt in church services all across the land on that Sunday morning they will be preaching about the Resurrection, and giving their interpretation of how it will be. The most common interpretation is that millions are going to be missing, planes are going to crash, trains will wreck, and there will be total chaos everywhere. But, in reality, the world will never know it happened. It will be business as usual the following Monday. People will find themselves in the Tribulation Period and will realize they missed the Rapture they were told they were going in by the Caiaphas of our day. In the days of Noah, one man out of all the millions was translated out before the flood. His name was Enoch. Genesis 5:24, “And Enoch walked with God: and was not; for God took him.” He was not even missed by the people. It was a secret catching away. In Genesis 7:1-10, Noah entered the ark, and the Lord himself shut the door. Noah couldn’t get out, and no one could get in. It was seven days before the rain came. The sun was shining, the people were going on about their life as usual not realizing it was over for them. They had sinned away their day of grace. Jesus said it will be like that again at the end time. It will be a day just like the day you are reading this article.

This must be why Jesus said in John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them you think you have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” He didn’t say go ask some preacher, He invited you to get alone with Him and His Word. After all, when it is all said and done it is between you and Him anyway. Not you and some preacher or church. They could be wrong just like Caiaphas.

The Intolerance of Tolerance

By Tom Smith Well, here we go again.

Last week I learned a VA hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan, recently hid the statutes of Jesus and Mary, along with a cross and altar, behind a curtain in their chapel. And, officials there are trying to figure out what they’re going to do with the stained glass windows in the chapel that have been there for years.

Seems that the decision of the VA officials there came after the National Chaplain Center conducted an on-site inspection and determined the hospital’s chapel was not in compliance with government regulations.

Supposedly, since 2008 there’s been a policy in place that mandates that “chapels must be maintained as religiously neutral, reflecting no particular faith tradition.”

Now, as a military chaplain I can understand the importance of being sensitive to the pluralistic nature of our active and retired military members. But, I never thought I’d see the day when such extreme steps as hiding any Christian symbols behind a curtain would be taken.

Down through the years I’ve been in Muslim mosques and Jewish synagogues. Even though my beliefs and practices are different in matters of Faith, I still respect their right to worship as they please—and I would hope they’d extend the same to me.

That’s why it grieves me when I see Christianity seemingly being singled out in this current climate of political correctness. You’d think that we lived in a religiously hostile country overseas where Christians are viewed as infidels, persecuted, imprisoned and even killed.

I never thought I’d see the day in these United States when it’d be wrong to end a prayer in Jesus’ Name. . .put “In God We Trust” on our coins. . .say “One nation under God” in our pledge of allegiance. . .or distribute Gideon Bibles in public schools.

Yes, we’ve changed—and not for the better.

But, I shouldn’t be surprised, for the Bible predicted that such would happen in the last days. Jesus Himself said “In this world you WILL have tribulation; but, be of good cheer for I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). He also said this world will hate those

who follow Him because “they hate Him. And, the reason they hate Him is because they hate His Heavenly Father” (John 15:18-25).

So, we shouldn’t be surprised at the hospital’s hiding anything Christian behind a curtain— or atheists’ wanting to remove crosses from veterans’ memorials that have been there for 50+ years.

The cross is offensive to them. And, so is the Name of Jesus.

That’s why the Apostle Paul said “The preaching of the Cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us who are saved, it is the Power of God” (I Corinthians 1:17). He also said “Preaching Christ crucified is a stumbling block to the Jews and foolish to the Greeks, i.e., the ‘enlightened ones’” (I Cor. 1:23).

Therefore, instead of resorting to some type of violence like the Islamic extremists and wanting to cut off someone’s head or blow somebody up, I’ll simply “love them, bless them, do good to them and pray for them” as Jesus taught (Matthew 5:44).

Otherwise, I’m no different than those who are a walking contradiction when it comes to tolerance and intolerance.

Let them go on and keep hiding Jesus behind curtains. If a massive stone covering a borrowed tomb couldn’t keep Him in on that Resurrection morning, neither will PC or others’ intolerance keep Him and His Message from still changing lives—unless we, who are His followers, succumb to the pressure or the PC Patrol.

May Almighty God give us the courage to “fight the good fight, patiently run and finish the Race that is set before us while keeping the Faith in the process” (II Timothy 4:7-8; Hebrews 1:1-2). That way we’ll not fear what others may say or do—and, when it’s all said and done, we’ll hear Him say “Well done, good and faithful servant. Enter now into the Joy of our Lord” (Mt. 25:21, 23). What a Day that will be!

DeWitt High School honored eight teachers Wednesday, May 28th, for the years they have taught in the DeWitt School District. Margaret Holzhauer taught in Gillett schools for 23 years and 5 years in DeWitt.

Lisa Howe has been High School Secretary for 10 years and has been in the district for a total of 31 years. Donna Padgett has in 10 years total with the last 6 years as the High School Librarian. Deana Bly

has taught for 19 years total with 16 years at DeWitt and 3 years at Dumas. Paula Counce has taught for 25 years total with 17 in DeWitt teaching Spanish.

Phyllis Gibson has taught for total of 45 years with only 1 year in DeWitt. Margaret Capps has taught 13 years with her last year in DeWitt. Debbie Childers has been in the cafeteria for 34 years.

Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge Celebrates National Boating and Fishing Week In celebration of National Boating and Fishing Week, Dale Bumpers White River National Wildlife Refuge will host a youth fishing derby at the Farm Unit, near Ethel. This family friendly event will provide young people a great opportunity to fish a stocked catfish pond on Saturday, June 7th, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. Registration for the derby will begin at 7:30 a.m. the morning of the event. Any youth 12 years of age and under will have a golden opportunity to catch catfish, so be sure to bring your fishing pole.

Daily creel (fish) limits and length limits will apply.

At the conclusion of the youth fishing derby, youngsters who registered will gather under the tent for a random drawing to win educational outreach materials/prizes. Hotdogs and chips will be provided by the Friends of White River NWR. National Boating and Fishing Week was established to help promote the sport of fishing among younger generations, as well as to provide family friendly outdoor recreation and education opportunities. In the true spirit of this special week, after the conclusion of the youth fishing derby, the stocked pond will be open to fishers of all ages through Sunday June 8th.

(Fishing will be allowed until sunset on Saturday and

on Sunday from sunrise to sunset).

Signs for the event will be posted on Hwy 1 directing traffic to the site Saturday morning.

Gayne Preller’s daring journey down the Mississippi River and up the White River in a “floating photographic gallery” during the early 1900s. It recreates how the Prellers became pioneering recorders of life in the Arkansas Delta.

“If you love great images and the romance of rivers, you will thoroughly enjoy this real-life epic and the photographic legacy as expressed in the exhibit, “ Twyla Gill Wright said of the exhibit, when it premiered in Batesville last month at the Old Independence Regional Museum. “Our museum is proud to have been a partner in its development.”

Hugo and Gayne Preller created an archive of photography and art that is now acclaimed as the earliest and most diverse in the Arkansas Delta. Their incredible family story and professional work spanned over half a century, from 1895 to 1950. As Allyn Lord, director of the Shiloh Museum of Ozark History in Springdale has written “This is an amazing uncovering of history, not just Arkansas history, but the history of photography, of riverboat culture and of race relations.”

The discovery of this photographic archive is an adventure story on its own.

Chris Engholm, an author photographer, tells how it all began. “In the fall of 2012, river rat Jim Fortune and I began paddling 400 miles down the White River with the goal of collecting artworks and stories for a book titled ‘White River Memoirs.’ After we tied up at Chickasaw Crossing, the original name for Augusta, I met the Preller’s granddaughter, Gayne Preller Schmidt.

From that moment on we forged a friendship. I soon learned that her grandparents were early photographers and that she had kept many of their

photographs stored away.”

Engholm continued, “Over time, we unearthed hundreds of the Preller’s prints and glass negatives in boxes.

Gayne gave me permission to digitize many of them and together we began to envision a traveling exhibition that would showcase her grandparents’ work. We also began the process of restoring and organizing a permanent Preller archive of over 2,200 images and objects.”

Hugo Preller was an artist who painted scenes on mussel shells and other materials, plus taking photographs of outdoor scenes. His wife, Gayne, was an engaging business woman in the community and people came from all over the region to be photographed by her, including African Americans whom she photographed with great artistry.

She was one of the region’s earliest female portraitists, and almost certainly the first female commercial photographer in the Arkansas Delta.

Engholm explained, “To create the exhibit, I formed an advisory group of scholars, and, in partnership with the Old Independence Regional Museum in Batesville, secured a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council. Early on, the late photographer-historian, Greer Lile, was a supporter and granted the use of his model of the Preller’s’ Floating Gallery. This exhibition is dedicated to him.”

The opening exhibit features 75 Preller works of art and photography, family artifacts, and the 4-foot long model of the floating gallery. A standing panel of original doors from the Preller studio in Augusta will duplicate their setting for portrait photography. A book about the Prellers and their work will be on hand.

Dardenne Selected for GEAR UP Superintendent Leadership Institute

The National Council for Community and Education Partnerships (NCCEP) has announced that Dr. Lynne Dardenne, superintendent of the DeWitt School District, has been accepted into the 2014-15 Superintendent Leadership Institute (SLI).

The 10-month program is designed to engage a small learning community of superintendents in senior-level discussions and trainings that focus on creating, sustaining, and strengthening the college going culture in their districts.

In reflecting on what she hopes to gain from the SLI experience, Dr. Dardenne expressed a desire to better engage the students and parents of her district. “I hope to gather ideas from other superintendents as to how student achievement has been improved and students and parents have been motivated to a greater degree of rigor,� she said.

Dardenne’s participation is supported by the Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) GEAR UP program, which serves eight school districts in eastern Arkansas.

According to GEAR UP Director Cory

Major, Dardenne’s participation will ensure that the program’s impact continues well beyond funding. “Investing in our area’s leadership is critical to the success of GEAR UP and programs like it,� Major said. “Even when the funding goes away, the skills building and knowledge provided to our community’s leadership remains and will impact students beyond the cohort of students we are currently serving.�

Over the course of the SLI year, Dr. Dardenne will receive five full days of professional training during three national sessions in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Chicago. Between sessions, NCCEP will provide coaching and peer support to help participants establish and implement personal goals and to hone their leadership strategies.

This marks the second year that NCCEP has sponsored the Superintendent Leadership Institute. NCCEP is a national non-profit, non-partisan organization working to increase access to higher education for low income students through advocacy, training, and research. As the U.S. Department of Education’s designated training provider for GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs), NCCEP organizes the NCCEP/GEAR UP annual conference and capacity-building workshop and supports and facilitates a variety of partnerships, leadership training programs, and research and advocacy efforts serving the GEAR UP community nationwide.

PCCUA has administered the GEAR UP Partnership since 2005. It is currently in year three of its second GEAR UP grant, which is funded by the U.S. Department of Education with a dollar-for-dollar match requirement for the partnership. The current grant works with eight area school districts: Barton-Lexa, DeWitt, Dumas, HelenaWest Helena, Lakeside, Lee County, Marvell-Elaine, and Stuttgart.

Now that summer has arrived, we look forward to enjoying fresh vegetables from the garden. There is an abundance of fresh produce available to families in the area through the Arkansas County Farmers’ Markets. Arkansas County grown vegetables currently being marketed include lettuce, cucumbers, yellow squash, zucchini, white & red onions, turnips, eggs, and more. In most cases, the vegetables are picked the same day, so as to provide the freshest vegetables possible. Other items being offered include preserved foods. The Stuttgart Market also has a vendor with home crafted furniture and other wooden items.

The Arkansas County Farmers’ Market in DeWitt is located on Highway 1 South on the parking lot just north of the Farmers Merchants Bank and is open on Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or as produce is available. Typically, producers are on sight at the markets by 7:00 a.m. and remain until around 11:00 a.m., unless produce is all sold out before then. The Famers Markets are open to all persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, disability, marital or veteran status, or any other legally protected status.

Rice Cooking Recipe Contest

By Ana Hollis, County Extension Agent – Family & Consumer Sciences Does your family have a favorite rice dish that you enjoy preparing and serving? If so, the 2014 Arkansas Rice Expo Recipe Contest is an opportunity for you to show off your culinary talents. With Arkansas County being the rice (and duck) capital of the world you are bound to have some savory rice recipes that would grab the judges’ attention so they will want to sample the prepared dish.

The third annual contest will be held Friday, August 1, in conjunction with the Arkansas Rice Expo at the Grand Prairie Center in Stuttgart. The objective of the contest is to promote healthy attributes of cooking with rice, to showcase the rice industry, and to advance cooking skills. The deadline for entries to be received is June 10 and winners of the preliminary round will be notified by July 1.

The first phase of the contest is to submit your recipe by June 10. An electronic copy of the entry form and recipe must be submitted online as well as a hard copy mailed to the address as provided on the entry form. Go to the following website to download an electronic copy of the entry form: http://www.uaex. edu/rice-expo/ . If you do not have access to a computer you can bring a copy of your recipe to the Arkansas County Extension Office by June 6 and we will assist you in completing the entry process.

The top 10 contestants will be chosen from the recipes for competing with their prepared rice dish on August 1. Additional information and complete contest rules are enclosed, along with a copy of the entry form.

This contest is open to all eligible adults age of nineteen and above, regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, disability, marital or veteran status or any other legally protected status. Since we are the host county I am hoping many of you will enter the contest and share with others our love for rice in Arkansas County.
