STORM DAMAGE
Canton Tigers Baseball Team had a fantastic season. The team is shown celebrating a big win and will represent Canton in the state tournament. The team was scheduled to play in state tournament action on May 28 and 29. Due to heavy rains over the weekend the game is to begin a day later, May 29. (photo by Maxine Hark)
Lewis County E-911 Public Meeting Planned Julie White, Interim Director of Lewis County E-911 has released the following information. A continuing lack of sales tax revenues resulted in the Lewis County 911 laying off employees, reducing staff during overnight hours, and cutting employee benefits at the monthly Lewis County 911 Board meeting. “The Lewis County 911 Center is funded by a 5/8 cents sales tax. Historically, we have staffed the emergency phone with two dispatchers, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week on $250,000 annually,” Board Treasurer Stacey Nicholas said. “There is no way we can financially support the agen-
cy on this declining tax base. At this point we are operating month-to-month.” In 2011, Lewis County voters denied the Lewis County 911 Center’s request for a sales tax increase to one percent. “When the voters made their decision in 2011, we cut costs and trimmed services, but there is only so much cutting that can be done on these declining resources,” said Board Chair Randy Eaton. “The Board is charged with providing 911 services—when the phone rings, the caller is guaranteed to reach emergency dispatch,” Eaton said. “This does not mean that the physical dispatch center must be in
the county where the caller is calling from.” Besides emergency dispatching, the Lewis County 911 Center also handles providing new addresses, signage, phone service for some EMS entities, and entering wants and warrants into the state computer system. Community members interested in discussing Lewis County 911 funding are invited to a community meeting with the 911 board at 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, 2013 in the Main Courtroom in the Courthouse, located at 100 E LaFayette St. Monticello Mo. The public is encouraged to attend.
