DEWITT DOG CLINIC

The DeWitt Fire Department to host a Dog Clinic, Saturday, May 10, 2014 from 9:00-12:00 p.m. The clinic will offer rabies, seven-in-one shots and worming for dogs and cats.

City license available for dogs (dog tags) at $10.00. Dogs living within city limits must have a city license per state law, city ordinance 642. Any loose dog will either be picked up or owner will be issued a citation. For questions, please contact Animal Control Officer Michelle Martin at 946-6307.

SAFETY DAY KROGER

AT

Kroger will be sponsoring a Safety Day on May 3rd from 10 am to 2 pm in their parking lot. Safety and emergency personnel will be on hand to educate the public about safety issues within our local community. Those taking part in this safety event will be the DeWitt Police Department, DeWitt Fire Department, DeWitt Hospital Ambulance Service, Arkansas County Health Department, Arkansas State Police, Delta Hospital out of Dumas, Smokey the Bear from the Forestry Commission, and the Arkansas Children’s Hospital will be on site with their smoke house to instruct children how to escape from a burning building or smoke filled room. Also, the Prison Band from the Cummings Unit will be providing live entertainment for this event. Kroger will be providing free hot dogs and Pepsi Cola will be providing Pepsi products and Ludwig Distributors will be donating water at no charge. Please come and enjoy this event with your family and the Kroger employees and lets all learn more about safety.

DES Third Grade students welcomed Mr. Tony Nelson and Mr. Kirk Wood to their math class this week to show us how important it is to accurately measure when building a home or building. Students were shown how to read blueprints, to scale space and materials from yards to quarter inches, and even how to measure the volume of a person’s head (the kids loved that trick!) Mr. Tony and Mr. Kirk came to help us kick off our next project which is to build homes, using recycled materials, and then to create a community limited only by our imaginations.

After reading the book, Roxaboxen, by Alice McLerran, based on a true story of the adventures of the author’s mother and fellow Roxaboxenites as they grew up in Yuma, Arizona

in the early part of the last century. These children created the make-believe town of “Roxaboxen” from rocks, boxes and lots of imagination. Even today, you can find neighborhood children making little rock and box houses with imagination as their only mortar. Now, it’s our turn.

Students will measure area and perimeter, draw their own “blueprints,” measure and cut supplies needed to build, and map out their community using coordinate grids and ordered pairs to show location. This project, when finished will be displayed around the circle corridor of DeWitt Elementary School. Student work will include posters demonstrating their work from early planning stages to developing questions for an interactive experience for all students.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT April 26, 2014 - Approximately 7:00 p.m., Officer Johnathan Powell heard a call of a reckless vehicle from Officer Brad Bazarow on Hwy 165. He was driving West on 2nd Street to assist Officer Bazarow, he saw a white flatbed truck coming towards him at a high rate of speed, weaving all over the road. He turned on his blue emergency lights and siren and turned around to stop the truck. While catching up with the truck, he asked dispatch if the vehicle Officer Bazarow was looking for was a white flatbed, and they confirmed that it was. The truck turned north onto Hwy 1 and the officer followed, getting up to approximately 90 MPH to catch up. The truck pulled over and stopped at the bridge, approximately 1 mile outside city limits. Powell pulled up behind the truck and it took off again, doing a u-turn and driving back towards DeWitt. The truck went approximately 2 blocks and stopped again on the side of the road. Officer Powell pulled up behind the truck and the driver opened the door. The driver was ordered to stay in the vehicle and to turn off the ignition. When Officer Bazarow arrived as backup approximately a minute later, Powell approached the driver’s side as Bazarow approached the passenger side. The driver was ordered to keep his hands where they could be seen and exit the vehicle. He asked the driver, what he was doing. He said that he was having lady trouble. About this time, Deputies Bobby Dumond and Lloyd Pace arrived on the scene. The driver then told Officer Bazarow that he had been drinking. Trooper McCradic arrived at approximately 7:20 and had the driver blow into a PBY, which read over .23. Trooper McCradic was concerned for the driver’s safety, as his balance was poor and the edge of the road dropped sharply, so they continued the tests at the sheriff ’s office. Officer Bazarow stayed with the vehicle and released it to Roger Capps Towing. Near the door to the jail, the suspect tensed up and refused to go in. When Officer Powell grabbed his shoulder, he jerked away and squared up as if he were ready to fight. Trooper McCradic pulled his taser and ordered him into the jail, and he refused. At this point, two or three came to assist. The suspect continued to refuse to enter the jail until Trooper McCradic told him he was going to get additional charges unless he complied. He then walked into the jail. Officer Powell then heard shouting and went to the door to assist and saw several officers trying to get the suspect into the jail side of the building. Because of his combative actions, Officer Bazarow tased the man in the chest with little effect.

Officer Bazarow then performed a drive stun with the Taser. As he did this, Powell pulled the suspected to the floor so that he could restrain him. Jail staff then placed the suspect into a restraint chair to cool off.

The Battle of Jenkins Ferry Obituary

With the stinging defeat at Marks Mills on April 25, the Federal army’s situation at Camden became more unbearable. General Steele’s food supplies were nearly exhausted, he received confirmation of Gen. Banks retreat down Red River, and he knew that Kirby Smith had joined Price with the infantry divisions of Gens.

Churchill, Parsons and Walker. Therefore when he learned of the disaster at Marks Mills he ordered an immediate retreat to Little Rock. By daybreak of April 27, the entire army had quietly evacuated Camden and was on the east side of the Ouachita River, thanks to a pontoon bridge that was later dismantled and hauled away by the rearguard.

The so called Red River Expedition had shot its bolt, now the Camden Expedition must safely terminate within the peaceful environment of Little Rock.

The Confederates knew nothing of the escape until the enemy was two hours along the road. They couldn’t cross the river until a day later, because owing to a mix-up at Shreveport HQ, they lacked pontoons and had to construct a raft bridge. Gen. Smith sent Marmaduke’s cavalry consisting of Col. Colton Greene’s lone brigade with Col R. C. Wood’s few companies to head off Steele. But he had to gallop over 30 miles to find a place to cross the rain swollen river. The futility of the chase became evident when he found himself behind the Union army when he reached Princeton.

As soon as work details completed the floating bridge, the pursuit was in the making at sunrise on the 28th.

Since each soldier carried his own rations and ammunition the only vehicles taken were ambulances.

Hard marches with little sleep compounded by heavy rains brought the mud-sodden army against the enemy’s rear at Jenkins Ferry, now in southwest Grant County. Moving with his strung-out infantry, Smith was uncomfortably aware that his chance to crush Steele against the Saline River was slipping away unless he struck a blow immediately. Since Churchill

was in the lead, Smith hastily threw in his division in an uncoordinated assault that began a pattern that continued until the engagement ended in the early afternoon.

With little or no information about the enemy, the Lt. Gen. commanding separately deployed each arriving unit on a narrow front as it reached the field. This gave the Federal defense the ability to defeat each piecemeal attack in detail while never becoming too seriously threatened.

The mainstay of Steele’s defense was the 4000 man division of Prussian immigrant Brig. Gen. Frederick Solomon, whose unit served as the rear guard.

The steadfast Solomon and his skillful brigade commanders were exactly what Steele needed as his weary starving troops, artillery and wagons navigated through the two miles of soggy bottomland on each side of the pontoon crossing. With the Saline River behind him, prolonged hunger and much straining tormented the ranks that were yearning for the confines of Little Rock. The draft animals fared no better.

Many wagons buried to their axles were burned after the mules were cut free and extricated from the mud.

At last, one day short of the Capital, the used up army was met by a ration laden supply train. On May 2, the advance trudged into the city.

Command leadership by Gen. Smith was such that Price should have directed the army’s operations.

Early on Smith wanted to close with Steele and crush him, before he escaped across the river. But the lack of a through reconnaissance, no real plan and failure to mass his larger army, set the stage for failure and a lengthy causality list. (Michael J. The Easter Lamb

I am thankful for parents and churches who have faithfully reminded children that Easter is about Christ not a bunny rabbit. I recently saw a church sign that both amused and pleased me. It read, “Easter is not about eggs, you silly wabbit!� Easter is about the resurrected Christ. I am thankful for the blessed assuring hope that we have concerning our own resurrection based on the resurrection of Christ. Praise God that death has lost its sting because Christ has overcome. Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15, tells us that the resurrection of Christ is central to our faith. If Christ had not been raised, our faith would be worthless and we would still be lost in our sins. It is worth remembering that without the Cross there would be no Resurrection; without Good Friday there would be no Easter; without the Easter Lamb there would have been no Cross.

Exodus 12 describes the Passover Lamb which is a wonderful illustration of the Easter Lamb to come. 1 Corinthians 5:7 lets us know that the Passover Lamb is indeed a picture of the Easter Lamb, “Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.� (NASU) When Jesus approached John the Baptist who was baptizing many for the repentance of sins, John exclaimed, “Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world.� (John 1:29 NASU) Exodus 12 tells us about the requirements for the lamb, the symbolism of the blood of the lamb, and how to eat the lamb.

The Passover Lamb was to be an unblemished male in the prime of its life. Christ, the Easter Lamb, was a male in his early thirties, in other words in the prime of His life. 1 Peter 1:18-19 speaks about the unblemished nature of Christ, “you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.� (NASU) Exodus 12 says that no bone of the Passover Lamb was to be broken. John 19:33 confirms that while it was common to break a leg during crucifixion, that was not done to Christ, “but coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead, they did not break His leg.� (NASU) Exodus 12 says the Passover Lamb was to be killed between the hours of 3:00pm and 6:00pm. Matthew 27 confirms that Christ was killed during that time period. The “roasted with fire� requirement given in Exodus 12 seems to be a foreshadowing of the great cruelty with which the Easter Lamb would be killed.

The inherent cruelty in crucifixion is well documented.

Exodus 12:1-6 contains an interesting contrast. Each household is to select a Passover Lamb from its own flock to be sacrificed on its own behalf. However, this same passage indicates that the lamb is to be brought before the whole congregation. Then the lamb was to be killed by the whole congregation. I infer at least two things from this contrast. First, the decision to trust in the sacrifice of the Passover/Easter Lamb is a private, individual decision that must be made public. Jesus said that if we deny Him in front of men, He will deny us in front of the Father. So-called private

Devan Cole Howard Devan Cole Howard age 18 of Monticello, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at his home. He was born August 16, 1995 in Monticello, Arkansas.

He was employed at Taco Bell, attended school in Monticello K-11, with his senior year at Marshall High School at Marshall and was a member of Wilmar United Methodist Church in Wilmar. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Robert Lee Howard, Jr and his great-grandmother, Maudie Breedlove.

Survivors include his mother, Paula Howard, of Monticello; his father, Kenneth Glen Wrinkle, Jr., of Gillett; two half-sisters, Summer Wrinkle and Kaitlyn Wrinkle, both of Pine Bluff; his maternal grandparents, Jewel and John Brixie, of Gillett, AR; his paternal grandfather, Kenneth Glen Wrinkle, Sr., of Gillett; his paternal grandmother, Kathy Jackson, of Gillett; one aunt and uncle, Jewellee and Adam Mellor, of Marshall, AR; two uncles, Wayne and Angela Howard, of Monticello and Bobby Howard, of Dewitt, AR and many great aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Thursday, May 1 at Stephenson-Dearman Chapel in Monticello, AR with burial in Mt. Tabor Cemetery. Visitation 6:00-8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Lynch Boling To Wed Mr. and Mrs. Scott Lynch of DeWitt are announcing the engagement and upcoming marriage of their daughter Hayley Elizabeth Lynch, to Jared Mark Boling, son of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Boling of Stuttgart. The bride-tobe is the grand-daughter of Lita Lynch and the late Jim Lynch of DeWitt and Alice Lawrence and the late Donald Lawrence of Jonesboro, AR. Haley is a 2007 graduate of DeWitt High School and will graduate from Arkansas State University in Jonesboro in May with a Doctorate in Physical Therapy. The prospective groom is the grandson of I.W. Stamp Out Smoking Announces Winners Of the 2014 Sketch Contest The 2014 Stamp Out Smoking (SOS) sketch contest received more than 3,000 entries from more than 60 Arkansas schools in its first year of implementation in middle schools. The activity was open to Arkansas students in fourth grade through eighth grade, who were encouraged to sketch artwork featuring this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s theme, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Natural State vs. the Tobacco State.â&#x20AC;? In addition to individual prizes for students, schools that had 100 percent of their eligible students participate were entered in a drawing. This year, Piggott Elementary School in Piggott was drawn, and it will receive a gift certificate to purchase art supplies.

Teachers from participating schools commented that this activity was an easy way to address important health issues in their classes.

COMMUNITY NEWS Lumsden Resigns as Chairman of South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year Committee

Traditions are passed down from generation to generation, and legacies last a lifetime, but some good things must come to end. After 32 years, the chairman of the South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year Committee, Eddie Lumsden, will be passing the torch to Heath Long when it’s time to choose the 2015 Farm Family of the Year.

After being re-elected every year as chairman since 1983, Lumsden made the decision to step down. “The only reason I stepped down is that I’ve been there 32 years,” Lumsden said. He went on to say that when he took the position 32 years ago, he had no idea he would be chairmen this long. “I still enjoy it.

I’ll be sitting there next year on the committee, but it’s just time.”

Lumsden explained the history behind choosing the chairman of the Farm Family Committee for South Arkansas County.

“Up until my family and I got Farm Family, the previous year’s winner was next year’s chairman.” The Lumsden

Family won Farm Family of the Year in 1982, and Lumsden has served as chairman since 1983.

In ’83, the committee decided to start electing the chairman instead of automatically appointing the previous year’s winner.

Farm Family of the Year started in Arkansas in 1947, and the Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year started in 1957.

There are 76 local winners instead of 75 because Arkansas County is the only county where there are two county winners: North Arkansas County and South Arkansas County. Those 76 county winners compete on the district level which awards 8 winners throughout the state and then those eight compete for one overall state winner.

Farm Family recipients receive a plaque and are recognized and honored by their peers throughout the year as Farm Family.

The winning farmer also becomes a member of the selection committee for the next year, which is made up of representatives of local

lending agencies, government agencies and other previous winners.

Speaking of his time as chairman, Lumsden said, “It’s been a very enjoyable experience to be able to recognize and encourage all these families.”

He said that everyone on the selection committee has the opportunity to nominate a family. As chairman, he would conduct the meeting by introducing everyone and discussing the nominees before the group voted.

One of the perks of serving as chairman has been delivering the news to the winning family. “It’s always such a satisfying feeling when you see the look on their face,” said Lumsden. His years of experience have also taught him that although winning at the district and state level are honorable, most winners value their award at the local level above all else. “They know it has come from their peers,” Lumsden said.

When he was asked what advice he would give Heath Long as the new chairman, Lumsden said, “Take plenty of time and listen.”

Long is not new to the Farm Family of the Year Program. Serving as the local Farm Family of the Year in 2011 and then chosen as District Farm Family of the Year, Long has served on the committee for the last few years and is familiar with the duties and responsibilities of the chairman.

“I think Eddie’s done a wonderful job. He’s been there 32 years. We’ll just try to keep doing the job like he did, although it’s always a challenging job.

The county is full of great farmers. It’s always hard to just narrow it down to one family,” Long said.

When asked what he was looking forward to as serving as the new chairman, Long said, “The

opportunity to pick a family and honor them for the work they do and acknowledging them for everything they have done for the community.”

Lumsden comes from a long line of farmers starting with his grandfather and then his father. His family farm in Bayou Meto has been in his family for approximately 100 years. It was where he was born and raised, and where he and his wife of 50 years, Pat, raised their three daughters, Stephanie, Laura and Jennifer.

“All the farmers in Arkansas County leave an imprint on their farm, and that turns into a legacy. This award that they receive is part of their legacy and part of their stewardship of the land. It becomes part of helping the world recognize who provides the food for the world,” said Lumsden.

He went on to say that currently in his 50th year of farming, he feels like he is actually living the legacy. “I love the fragrance of freshly turned soil. I enjoy the innocence of a young plant that has just sprouted from the seed. I enjoy seeing the awakening that a plant has from its first water whether from above or with irrigation.

I enjoy the aroma of freshly harvested grain. I recognize that all of this comes from the good Lord above,” said Lumsden.

“I love being a steward of the land. That’s why these things just come so natural to me. You have to take care of it and have it there for the next generation,” said Lumsden.

Base Things of the World Has God Chosen

By William Wood “The Baptism of The Holy Ghost” Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with The Holy Ghost.” What a different world this would be if we were all filled with the Holy Ghost! It would be impossible to overestimate the consequences that would result from the Spirit of God being in His People! He anoints the mind and the heart of the believer, and sets him apart from those in the church who have only been emptied out from their sins, but never filled back up with God’s Spirit.

His Spirit in us is the only way that we can be delivered from the power of sin. It works in us “To will and to do of The Lord’s good Pleasure.” By His spirit being “with us” at first, the light comes and we see our lost estate and repent. He forgives us and we are Justified, all sins forgiven. With this experience behind us we then Promise The Lord that we will love Him and serve Him the rest of our life. When He sees that the heart has thus been yielded to Him He sends His Holy Ghost spirit to live in us. This Holy Ghost guides us in the way of righteousness. Enlightened by His pure rays of light we are no more walking in darkness, but in the light of His Holy Word. As fire the Holy Ghost purges us from sin, and sets our consecrated nature to blazing. He is the Light and the Power, by which we are enabled to offer our whole life, body, spirit and soul as a living sacrifice unto God. As the Dove (which is His type) He broods over His church, with wings of Peace and love and truth. He does away with the fears and doubts that mar the Peace of His Beloved wife (Bride). They have a declaration of His undying love, and they

cry “Abba Father.” His Spirit, as the wind, unseen but felt, brings the breath of life to men. Stop a second dear reader, now to be a deep breath! He gave that to you, and if He should withhold it for only a few short minutes you would be dead, and gone to meet your reward, whatever that might be!

What are we without His spirit in us? What are we without the continual influence of His Holy Ghost Spirit? We are of the same nature that was in Adam and Eve after they sinned!

We need to look at ourselves in the mirror of His word, and see what we are, Present tense.

Doesn’t your Conscience condemn you? Do not your thousand wanderings from His word bother you? Can’t you see that we are all unworthy to be call His child? Can you see where we would be without His grace? What is it then that makes us different from what we were? You may say, “I am a great believer, and I pray that you are, but may I remind you that you would be a Great Sinner without His Spirit! It is the Holy Ghost that takes great sinners and makes great Believers out of them. How then do we know whether or not we have The Holy Ghost? The answer is very clear in God’s Word.

James 4:4 “If we love the World and the things of the world, that is to say, “If we are a friend of the world we are the enemy of God.” Now friends, let us be lifted up in the spirit and looks down on this modern day church world. For the most part their love of the world is clearly seen in their midst.

But to tell them they don’t have The Holy Ghost is to start a spiritual war! But so be it, the battle is not ours, but God’s, and no one has ever won a battle against God. Amen.

Something To Ponder

By Michael Waldroup One might ask the question, “When the Angel of the Lord and the host of Heaven came to reveal that the Christ Child was on Earth, why did he come to shepherds and not the preachers of that day?

These shepherds were the low class of society of that day and time. They lived with their sheep and they smelled like sheep, so they were just not welcomed. Yet, God chose to send a great multitude of Heaven to these stinking shepherds and reveal to them the Christ child was on Earth.

They had their big fine churches of that day.

Why didn’t God choose to go to them? After all, they were the ones preaching that the Messiah was coming, not the shepherds.

Since He didn’t come the

way they were preaching He would come, they were humiliated by the fact that the Messiah was a baby born in an animal stable with animal dung in it, especially when it was being told to them by stinking shepherds with sheep dung on their shoes.

The Bible teaches us that He is God, and He changes not (Malachi 3:6), and that He is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). If God does something one way, He would have to do it that way again, or He would be saying He did it wrong the first time.

If so, He wouldn’t be God then, because God makes no mistakes.

So, if He bypassed the big fine churches of that day and time at His first coming, is it possible He would do it at His second coming?

Signs of the Times?

What are they afraid of? That’s the question that looms in the back of my mind when I read stories like that one last week where a student’s application to a community college was denied after he said “My God” in response to a question in an interview. He’d been asked “What’s the most important thing in your life?” and his response evidently didn’t set well with the Politically-Correct (P.C.) interviewers.

So, they turned down his application for admission.

When told this was a violation of the student’s First Amendment rights, the attorney for the Community College of Baltimore County replied, “Mr. (Brandon) Jenkins was not advised to ignore, change or deny his religious views.

The suggestion simply was that he not wear them on his sleeve as his best qualification.”

Unbelievable!

Since when is such a simple answer, springing from an individual’s personal, deeply-held convictions, so offensive? Probably about the time folks started objecting to manger scenes on courthouse squares. . .the use of “One nation under God” in the pledge of allegiance. . .and the placing of “In God We Trust” on our currency.

Ever since the 60’s when Madelyn Murray O’Hair objected to public prayer in schools and the hanging of the 10 Commandments in classroom, we’ve been at war in these United States. An internal war. A cultural war. A moral war. A religious war.

And, sadly, with the current liberal lean of the courts—put there by P.C. politicians who detest Judeo-Christian views, values, mores, etc.— we’re seeing an unprecedented persecution of anyone who holds such beliefs. It matters not that our nation was built upon these cherished, proven, Biblical principles; what matters is whether or not it’s P.C. in the eyes of those who laud tolerance, but are among the most intolerant people you’ll ever meet.

be more esteemed than J.C. (Jesus Christ). I never thought I’d see the day where there are no absolutes and Constitutional ruleof-law is overruled by the personal preferences of “the powers that be.”

No wonder our nation is in moral decay and unraveling from within.

Like the once-great Roman Empire that selfdestructed, so is America coming apart at the seams in her pursuit of hedonism, humanism, secularism, socialism, etc.

Thankfully, there are still those—like the student mentioned above—who are fighting back. He’s filed a lawsuit against the community college and here’s hoping he’ll win. If enough followers of J.C. will stand firm in their faith and have the courage to act upon it, the P.C. advocates will soon realize why “the meek shall inherit the earth.”

Dear Reader, you may feel like you have no voice and are powerless against such forces of darkness. But, never forget that history is filled with individuals just like you who stood up and were counted against seemingly insurmountable odds.

Even though it cost them dearly, they still valued Truth over error and liberty more than life.

Therefore, do something when injustice rears its ugly head. Talk to your congressmen. Write a letter to the editor. Attend your local PTA or school board and let your voice be heard. You may only be one —but you’re still one and can make a difference.

P.C. or J.C.?

The choice is ours. That’s why my mantra is that of Joshua in the Old Testament as he neared the point of his death: “Choose you this day whom you will serve; but, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:15).

PCCUA Student of the Month

Adrienne Jordan

Adrienne Jordon of Dumas will receive an A.A.S. degree in Behavioral Health Technology Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas on May 15, 2014. She has been selected by the Behavioral Health Program as PC-

CUA DeWitt Campus Student of the Month for May. Adrianne is a disabled veteran who began school in 2011. Her parents are Fayette Schales and the late Marshall Schales and UD Jordon, Jr. She is the mother

of a seventeen year-old daughter Marterria and an eight year old son Jaylon. Jordon states: “Between fulfilling my duties as a single parent and doing my coursework, I have rarely had enough time for anything else; after graduation, I intend to take advantage of some much needed down time.”

When she started to school in 2011, she was a little hesitant. She had no idea how she would blend in on a campus that with traditional college student enrollment.

However, she made a commitment to herself and her family that she would do the best she could and would not allow distractions to interfere with the meeting of her goals. Through determination, dedication and discipline, she has finally accomplished

her goal of receiving an associate degree. She says that she has enjoyed the time she spent in the classroom with her instructors and fellow classmates.

For those not ready for a four year college campus lifestyle, those who want a jump-start on working toward a degree, or for those who want to go to college at their own pace, she recommends PCCUA. It is ideal for both traditional and non-traditional students pursuing a degree with varying hours and sites for class attendance.

There are numerous resources available for assistance for students.

The faculty and staff have offered guidance, support, and encouragement throughout her learning experience.

cal Laboratory Technology (MLT) program at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA) by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP).

Attending classes on the PCCUA-Helena-W. Helena campus, Clawson, Hargrove and Stockford have each been awarded a $1,000 national scholarship sponsored by Siemens Healthcare Diagnostics and the ASCP. The purpose of this award is to help defray education costs, promote medical laboratory science as a rewarding career, and help address the workforce shortage of qualified professionals.

Healthcare Diagnostics celebrate the future of medical laboratory professions by awarding scholarships to students who have achieved a level of success that merits recognition. These scholarships assist students in balancing their full-time studies and expenses which arise in the course of their educational endeavors.

Julie Pittman, PCCUA MLT/PLB instructor, noted that each of these students maintains an excellent academic record and is very deserving of this recognition.

Their selection was based on academic achievement in their laboratory medicine studies, as well as leadership and community involvement.

The Big Bass ‘Merica Tournament was held last Saturday, April 26th. It was sponsored by the parents of the DHS class of 2014. Participants were allowed to fish anywhere, and come back for a weigh-in of the fish at 1:00pm.

First place went Jared and Ross Boling with a prize of $200 for most fish caught, which was donated back to the senior class, and $50 for the largest fish. Second place went to Greg Davis with a prize of $100.

By Shelly Faulkner The 5th Annual Kids Fishing Derby, sponsored by DHS East Lab in cooperation with Arkansas Game and Fish Commission and the Grand Prairie Ruritan Club, was held Saturday, April 26th. This year had the largest group at 102 participants.

There were 3 age divisions with 1st through 3rd place winners.

Benevolent Fund Set A benevolent account has been set up at Planters and Merchants Bank of Gillett to aid in funeral and medical expenses for Huey Brinton.

Gillett EHC Meets in April The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its April meeting on Tuesday, April 15, at The Paddy in Gillett with twelve people present and Anita Trimble as hostess.

Margie Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Job 21:9 reminding us that God will always be our safe place and that He is always waiting for us to come home to Him. Becki Weinrich read the thought for the month: “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional,” by

Smith presented the program about using coupons efficiently and effectively.

The Save Money Using Coupons handout summarized the best ways to find coupons, to organize coupons, to plan using coupons, and to check unit prices, forms, sizes, and packaging to determine which package is the best buy for your use. Members filled out an evaluation form about using coupons, helping to determine if the program was effective. Each of those present received a coupon organizer and grocery list pad, both furnished by the Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Dorothy Connelly, secretary, led roll call with the question: “When was the last time you used coupons?” One member said she had used cou-

pons earlier on meeting day; other responses included one day ago, three days ago, and last week.

Four of those present indicated they did not use coupons.

The minutes of the last meeting were read and accepted, and the treasurer’s report was given and approved. Dorothy Faye Dixon read the helpful hint: Lettuce and celery keep longer if you store them in paper bags instead of cellophane.

Gillett had six people attend the EHC Spring Council meeting on April 9 at PCCUA/DeWitt campus. Several members also attended the bib workshop on April 15 at the DeWitt office.

Club members Thelma Connelly, Debbie Daniels, and Arlene Ferguson were also present.

Guests included Gail Briggs, Laurie Eason

(visiting from New Jersey), and Jeannie Fletcher. Fletcher came as a guest and decided to join our group.

Everyone enjoyed the delicious refreshments served by Trimble. Briggs won the door prize. The meeting closed with the Extension Homemaker’s Creed.

The May meeting will be on Tuesday, May 20, at The Paddy in Gillett at 2 p.m. with Daniels as hostess.

Easter Visitor’s Christina Grantham and Bernie Crowley of Helena visited in the home of her parent’s on Easter Sunday. After attending morning worship they enjoyed lunch together.

Save the Date Gillett United Methodist Church & St. Paul’s Lutheran Church will hold Vacation Bible School during the week of June 16-20, 2014.

Farm Service Agency Announces Several Disaster Programs Eligible producers can now enroll in one of four programs administered by the Farm Service Agency. The Livestock Forage Disaster Program (LFP), and the Livestock Indemnity Program (LIP) will provide payments to eligible producers for livestock deaths and grazing losses that have occurred since the expiration of the livestock disaster assistance programs in 2011, and including calendar years 2012, 2013, and 2014.

The Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (ELAP) provides emergency as-

sistance to eligible producers of livestock, honeybees and farm-raised fish that have suffered losses because of disease, severe weather, blizzards and wildfires.

Also, the Tree Assistance Program (TAP), provides financial assistance to qualifying orchardists and nursery tree growers to replant or rehabilitate trees, bushes and vines damaged by natural disasters.

Producers wanting to sign up for these programs are encouraged to contact Arkansas County FSA at 870-946-3331 for information on the types of records needed and

to schedule an appointment. Taking these steps in advance will help producers ensure their application moves through the process as quickly as possible.

Supporting documents may include livestock birth records, purchase and transportation receipts, photos and ownership records showing the number and type of livestock lost, documents listing the gallons of water transported to livestock during drought, and more.

Crop records may include purchase receipts for eligible trees, bushes, or vines, seed and fertil-

izer purchases, planting and production records, and documentation of labor and equipment used to plant or remove eligible trees, bushes, or vines.

Producers have three to nine months to apply depending on the program and year of the loss. Details are available from any local FSA office.

Arkansas Guard Expands Response Mission Despite Direct Impacts to Members, Families VILONIA, Ark.:-- The response role for the Arkansas National Guard, like many agencies participating, continues to expand after a deadly tornado swept through the central Arkansas communities of Mayflower and Vilonia.

In addition to the 54 Soldiers called to StateActive Duty overnight to assist local authorities with traffic control, search and rescue, and medical evacuation, an additional six Guard members were tasked early this morning to deliver several fresh water trailers to support the needs of local residents and the vast number of volunteers.

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management also passed a re-

quest from the Faulkner County Judge at 9 a.m. today for a the National Guard to provide a UH60 Black Hawk helicopter and crew to conduct low level aerial search over the shore line of Lake Conway and through the wooded areas in the path of the storm for additional victims of the storm.

Initially 46 members of the Arkansas National Guard were called to state active duty to assist local authorities in the hard hit communities.

That first call-out and subsequent responses from Guard members brought the grim realization that numerous Guardsmen and their family members were directly impacted. Within the first few hours fol-

lowing the storm both Army and Air National Guard members began to check in with their commanders and on each other – neighborto-neighbor.

As of 10 a.m. Central Time the Arkansas National Guard has confirmed that one member perished when the tornado struck the community of Vilonia. The name is being withheld awaiting full notification of nextof-kin.

Additionally, dozens of Guard members’ homes were damaged or destroyed, and an unconfirmed number of family members were injured or hospitalized.

Despite these difficult circumstances over 50 Guard members from the Central Arkansas

area responded to the call to help their neighbors, friends and fellow Guard families in need.

Arkansas Governor Mike Beebe summed up the situation in a 10 a.m. press conference in the community of Mayflower. “These are Arkansans helping Arkansans, like they always do. Neighbor helping neighbor in a time of need.”

Beebe made note that multiple state agencies, nearby communities and a large number of civilian volunteers have responded to help. From a national perspective, Beebe indicated that the federal government pledged to make resources available to help in the recovery and rebuilding of the devastated communities.

30th Annual DES Kinder-Olympics

The kindergartners at DeWitt Elementary School kicked off Friday, April 25 with a hot dog picnic before starting an afternoon of fun and games at the Kinder-Olympics. This year marked the 30th year for the DES Kinder-

Olympics. The students enjoyed games of bowling, t-ball, basketball, and football. Kinder-Olympics was first put into motion to get the kids more active, and 30 years later, the program is still going strong.
