COUNTY MARKET EASTER EGG HUNT

THE PRESS-NEWS JOURNAL’S WEBSITE

ANNUAL KIWANIS PANCAKE DAY For over 50 years, Canton Kiwanis Club has sponsored the charter of Boy Scout Troupe 174. This year, scouts Remington Jarvis and Braedyn Hausdorf are creating a community walking path at Brose Park in Canton for their Eagle Scout project, and Kiwanis is proud to support their work with the proceeds of the Annual Kiwanis Pancake Day on Saturday, April 6 from 7a.m. to 1p.m. at the United Methodist Church on Washington Street. Whole hog sausage and pancakes, home-made and served in tents on the church lawn by Kiwanians and scouts show the teamwork that both organizations value in growing youth into good citizens who serve the community.

Hundreds of Easter eggs were scattered in the grass at County Market in Canton on Saturday morning. The Easter bunny was there for kids to take their picture with before the Easter egg hunt began and after.

Holocaust survivor speaks at Culver-Stockton College Culver-Stockton students, faculty and staff got the rare experience of listening to the firsthand experiences of a Holocaust survivor, March 26 & 27. German native Walter Reed came to visit multiple classes on campus, reliving his encounters of the Nazi regime in Europe and providing insightful perspective to students. Reed’s account of his life brought text books to life as students were able to listen to his account of World War II. Reed’s story is one of tribulation and triumph. Reed was arrested at the age of 14 during the infamous Crystal Night raid on Jewish people. He was released three days later due to his age. His parents then

made the decision to send Reed on a humanitarian mission to Belgium. Reed’s life was spared, but he lost his parents and siblings when they were taken by the Nazis “on a train to Poland and never heard from again.” Reed escaped Belgium’s Nazi invasion when his benefactors smuggled him through southern France, where he lived in a barn with 100 other displaced Jewish children for months before getting a rare immigration visa to the USA in 1941. Reed compares getting his USA visa to winning the lottery. After two years in America, Reed was drafted into the U.S. Army, where he worked as an interpreter for interrogations of German soldiers as a member of the 95th

The City of LaBelle passed a continuation of a $0.1000 cent tax levy on one hundred dollars assessed valuation for general municipal purposes with a vote of 77 to 26. In the only contested race for North Ward Alderman, two people were elected, Roy Lewis Sr. and Benny Kaylor defeated Jonah Lewis. Running unopposed were Larry Hackemack for Mayor, Debra Lay for City Collector and Roger Scott for South Ward Alderman. Infantry Division. After his Army service, he enrolled at the University of Missouri, where he earned his degree in journalism. Many listening to Reed were struck by his candor and also by his humble attitude. While in the area, Reed also participated in the Young Writers’ Conference at C-SC. He led a breakaway session for students on historic writing and also participated in a Q & A session. He recently finished researching and writing a documented historical account of his experiences, entitled “The Heroes of La Hille- How Almost 100 Jewish Children Foiled the Nazi Murder Machine (1939-1945).

Jump Rope for Heart Fundraiser

LAGRANGE GARDEN CLUB

Pictured are Mackenzie O’Brien, Taylor Johns, Delanie Pierce (Top Fundraisers). Mackenzie O’Brien earned the most overall funds for the fundraiser.

Canton R-V Elementary hosted their annual Jump Rope for Heart Event on Feb. 23, 24 and 25. Students did an excellent job and we were able to raise $2,558.00 for The American Heart Association. Our top collector was Mackenzie O’Brien who collected $260.00. The top collecting class was Mrs. Crenshaw’s 4th grade, who collected $428.00. The top collector for K-2: Delanie Pierce ($125.00); 3-4: Mackenzie O’Brien ($260.00) and 5-6: Taylor Johns ($117.00). These students have won a free Subway lunch. The students were also challenged to raise $50.00 or more, because it was discussed in class that it costs approximately $50.00 to train a person in CPR. The following students raised $50.00 or more and have joined our Life Savers Club: Delanie Pierce, Avery Uhlmeyer, Chynna Scott, Taylor Johns, Trevor Logsdon, Madison Tate, Kanna Miller, Kegan Birck, Airizona Logsdon, Hanna Taylor, Mackenzie O’Brien, Mallory Blessing, Allie Ruffcorn, Kaeleb Eisenbeiss, Mackenzie Tate, Mason O’Hara, Jimmy Yarrington, Macie Fisher, Wyatt Ratliff, Lizzie Grego and Clayton LaCount.

The La Grange Garden Club recently spent the morning at the Lewis County Head Start in La Grange. They helped each of the children plant a flower seed. The club also went to both the morning and afternoon sessions of the Lutheran Pre-School, where they also planted flower seeds with the children.

Douglass Head Start receives award for family engagement The Head Start Program at Douglass Community Services has been selected to receive the 2013 Region VII Award for Effective Family Engagement in recognition of its ability to effectively involve families in the education process of their children. In the award letter, Regional Program Manager Clarence Small wrote, “Your innovative approach to family engagement and goal implementation demonstrated strong leadership and led to positive outcomes and continuous improvement. …We appreciate your outstanding efforts in your Head Start community and are delighted to recognize your accomplishment in this area.” Head Start Family Engagement utilizes a strengthbased approach to identify family needs, which provides a foundation for the intensive supports given to Head Start families. Head Start staff work with individual families to identity areas that the family can work toward success, such as job skills, continuing education, relationship building, and healthy parenting. “Our Head Start social service staff are highly trained

and committed individuals. This award is not only recognition of their efforts, but also reflects the work of all DCS Head Start and Early Head Start staff as they interact daily with families we serve,” said Head Start Program Director Linda Bleything. “It is quite an honor to be selected as the recipient for Region VII which encompasses four states in the Midwest” added Dave Dexheimer, Executive Director for Douglass Community Services, the Head Start grantee for eight counties in Northeast Missouri. “Our staff is constantly on the lookout for more and better ways to involve our families in the education and social processes which benefit our children and our communities in so many ways.” The Douglass Program will compete nationally with other regional Head Start honorees for a national Effective Family Engagement award. Head Start at Douglass Community Services provides early childhood education to 515 families in Northeast Missouri.

MoDOT at 100: Celebrating a Century of Service One hundred years ago, just after President Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated and as women campaigned for the right to vote, the Missouri General Assembly created the State Highway Department. Because on March 22, 1913, the precursor to today’s Missouri Department of Transportation came to be, Governor Jay Nixon recently issued a proclamation recognizing the 100th anniversary of the Missouri Department of Transportation. “At that time, most road building equipment was mule-powered,” said MoDOT interim director Dave Nichols. “Today, our skilled crews and contractors use machines to do much of the work. There is even a machine that can pull up old pavement, recycle it, and put it back down all in one sweep. The engineers of yesteryear would be amazed by what is possible just 100 years past their time.” Henry Ford began the nation’s first moving assembly line in 1913, an innovation that soon made automobile

ownership affordable for more Americans. More roads were needed…and fast. Legislators recognized that statewide coordination was needed to build a road system to connect Missouri’s cities. Just a few years later, in 1921, the legislature established the bi-partisan State Highway Commission so that transportation decisions could be made on a statewide basis without regard to political affiliation. Highways soon made it easier for people and goods to travel from town to town. Into the 1950s however, many connecting roads were still simply dirt or gravel. On rainy days, school buses sank deep into the mud of unpaved roads. When the department took over 12,000 miles of county highways in 1952, 95 percent of Missourians were brought within two miles of a hard surfaced road and finally made all areas of the state accessible. By 1956, Missouri awarded the nation’s first interstate highway contracts and began construction of In-

terstate 70 in St. Charles. Today, MoDOT is responsible for 33,702 miles of state highways and more than 10,000 bridges. The state boasts 125 public-use airports, 4,800 miles of mainline railroad track, the third-largest inland port in the nation, more than 70 million transit trips per year and more than 600 miles of shared-use paths for bicyclists and pedestrians. The State Highway Department and the State Department of Transportation merged in 1980, bringing highways, rail, water, air and transit into one department – the Missouri Highways and Transportation Department, renamed MoDOT in 1996. “We think it is important to stop and realize that we stand on the shoulders of those who built this system of roads, bridges, rails, river ports and airports,” said Nichols. “They knew that transportation work never ends and trust us to keep it moving. We do our best to prove ourselves worthy of their example.”

FCCLA Members Lead Anti-Bullying Project Kaitlyn Kimbrell and Jessica Mosley, eighth graders at Highland High School, have been taking an active role to help stop bullying at Highland’s elementary and high schools. The girls are members of the Highland Chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, (FCCLA). They worked through the FCCLA National program called, “STOP the Violence”, which stands for “Students Taking On Prevention”. Stop the Violence is a program that empowers youth with attitudes, skills and resources in order to recognize, report and reduce youth violence. Through the STOP the violence program, FCCLA members use peer education to: reach their peers with violence prevention education, recognize warning signs of potential youth violence, encourage young people to report troubling behavior, collaborate with school and community resources to address youth violence, and develop and implement local action projects to reduce the potential for violence in their school. Kaitlyn and Jessica researched the topic of bullying, planned and prepared activities to share with elementary students, and worked with the elementary counselors to share the anti-bullying program with the fourth and sixth grade classes. When asked about the success of their project, the girls shared the following: “People don’t realize how much bullying can affect a person’s life and the way they feel about themselves and peers. We have a message to get out to anyone who will

listen. Here is our message: We will recognize warning signs that suggest someone may be headed for violence. We will ask peers to break the “code of silence” among young people and report troubling behavior to keep everyone safe. We will take steps to get help from peers who may be headed for violence. We will choose to be nonviolent in our own attitudes and actions.” Kaitlyn and Jessica entered this project at the Missouri FCCLA Region 3 STAR Events competition, where they received a gold rating, and eligible for the state competition April 7-9 at Missouri FCCLA State Leadership Conference. Mrs. Billie Miller is their FCCLA advisor. Kaitlyn and Jessica receiving award and gold rating for FCCLA Region 3 STAR Event project, “It Stops Right Here, Right Now”. EDITORIAL Letter to the Editor I read the Press-News Journal article dated March 14, 2103 page 1, that Highland High School was planning an Anti-bullying Presentation on March 20, 2013. I know about bullying first hand. This is not a new concept. My best friend and I were bullied in Junior High School and my friend committed suicide. My son was bullied in second grade by his teacher and came to fear going to school every day. Bullying seems to be thought of an activity exclusively practiced by children. Adults can bully too and in fact has been on the rise involving teachers and students. So it was a shock when I read, in the same paper, page 4 of the Sparks story in the letter to the editor. The Administrator who was sticking his finger in the student’s face was in fact being aggressively intimidating. That is bullying. When confronted by this boy’s mother he continued his finger pointing and justified his actions by saying he was trying to figure out what was going on. No. That is not how an adult (administrator) communicates with a child or parent. This person’s authority was not being questioned or threatened, only his unacceptable behavior. I applaud his Mother for getting in-between administrator and child. Although her choice to use cuss words might have been unwise, I too might have done the same thing while also having a finger stuck in my face feeling aggressively threatened and intimidated and by this time humiliated. The school has taken an incident that is covered by HHS policy and ignored its own guidelines. It has been escalated into a major event whereas handled properly would have resulted in Mrs. Sparks missing a game at most. A school board and principal who is afraid to give one Mother her due process is unconscionable, they are initiating and perpetuating the bullying. Taking that boys letter and blaming him for the altercation in front of everyone is bullying. I can only hope those adults involved will have front row seats during the presentation on anti-bullying as they are clueless of the definitions and repercussions of bullying and evidently cannot recognize it. I am asking parents, students, grandparents, and all the community to ask; what if it happened to me and mine. What would I do, how would I feel? What due process would I have? We encourage our children not to be bystanders in bullying and as adults we should do the same, take a stand and make a statement, stop the bullying. We need to stand together as a community and say No, this must stop and not be allowed to happen at a school that thinks public humiliation of a student and parent are ok. I say shame on HHS personnel, administrator, principal and school board, those directly involved and any knowing bystanders. The Sparks family needs a public apology and the persecution to end. Diana Garner Maywood, Mo

Mr. Ryan turns out a variety of tasty bakery goods and his V-14 mineralizer bread has proved popular. 85 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal March 22, 1928 The grippe has certainly hit Derrahs, a severe lick this time, not a family has escaped having from one to six down at a time. Several cases of pneumonia have developed but all are improving. Mrs. Amy Lake of LaGrange, deputy grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star, made an official visit to the Monticello chapter Tuesday evening when she had the work exemplified and she complimented them on their work. The latest fad in our village is croquet. They have a court south of the garage and old and young gather there and enjoy the games. When farmers come in to trade they usually have time for a game. J.H. Hilbert of LaBelle joined them in several games last week. Deer Ridge. There is little change in the bank situation in Lewistown and the banks are still closed with little likelihood that they will be opened without liquidation. But there is still a chance and Hon. Sam B. Jefferies, an expert on such matters, is coming here today to do hat he can to relieve the situation. 95 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal March 22, 1918 Andy Zenge of Canton now is among the new residents of Mercedes. He and his wife went to Texas from here more than two years ago, hoping to benefit the health of both. They were much better and last year built a bungalow on their ranch near Millett. His health had been failing again lately and he died Wednesday. Quite a gloom was cast over the community Saturday evening when the news was flashed over the wire that Barney Horn, accompanied by Esther Batschlet, while en route to the home of Miss Pauline Legg, had the misfortune to upset the car which turned over twice. Miss Ester, jumping out, escaped with only a few slight bruises but Barney was rendered unconscious and passed away at 2 p.m. Sunday, He was 18 years of age. Hazel Grove. Mrs. George Bowman, 74, departed this life March 10. er, Rachel, Bobby and Dalton Shepherd. Bobby and Clay are both chemical engineers and enjoyed a visit about their work. Sunday morning was the last worship service Bro. Jeremy will have at South Union Baptist. Dr. Sam Swisher will be filling the pulpit on April 7 and 14. It is interesting how things happen. Marvin and I were at Barnes Hospital and while we were waiting for my appointment we were reading the hospital newspaper. A full page was about Ricky Bales having a “widowmanker” heart attack and how the hospital saved his life with a new procedure. Ricky is the son of Buel Bales, a former pastor at South Union and well known in the Maywood area. Looking at another paper we enjoyed reading about Norman “Stormin’ Norman” and Virginia Stewart. They are helping Boone Hospital in Columbia raise money for a new Cancer Center. Mr. Stewart has helped “Coaches against Cancer” raise almost 100 million dollars for cancer research. A number of folks were having Easter dinners and will have their news next week..

Four C-SC Athletes Earn HAAC Weekly Honors Ill. (Guilfoyle HS / Rock Valley CC), earned his first complete-game shutout as a Wildcat against the Bobcats. He didn’t allow a run despite giving up 11 hits and issuing two walks. Wimberly struck out a season-high 11 Bobcats and held Peru State to 0-for-16 with runners in scoring position as C-SC snapped a four-game HAAC losing streak. Sophomore Rhea Hobson was named Softball Player of the Week after leading the Wildcats

to a 3-1 week overall. Hobson, a 5-foot7 second baseman from Griggsville, Ill. (Griggsville-Perry HS), batted a team-high .583 during the week. After going hitless in her first game of the week, Hobson was seven-for-nine over the final three games, all Wildcat victories. She scored the winning run in C-SC’s 2-1 victory over Iowa Wesleyan when she led off with a double and eventually scored when the Tigers committed two

throwing errors on the play. Hobson also scored five runs, had a double and a triple among her seven hits, and drove in a run during the week. Defensively, Hobson handled all 26 chances (13 putouts / 13 assists) without an error. In track and field, Skyler Barger was named the women’s track athlete of the week and John McBride was named men’s field athlete of the week after each won two events

Kyle Frazier, 8, displays both of his third-place medals after swimming events at the YMCA Ill./Mo. State Meet held in DeKalb, Ill. Frazier claimed third place in the 25 yard freestyle and 25 yard butterfly events with personal-best times in both.

State Championship dreams start young, and for one Quincy Family YMCA swimmer that dream was nearly a reality March 17. Kyle Frazier, 8, earned two third places in the YMCA State Swim Meet in DeKalb, Ill. Frazier set two new personal-best times in the boys 8 and under 25 yard freestyle and the 25 yard butterfly events during preliminary heats on Sunday with times of 15.29 seconds and 15.83 seconds, respectively. The top eight finishers in preliminaries advanced to the afternoon finals, and both morning swims were fast enough to punch Frazier’s ticket to the finals. Frazier finished behind two swimmers from the St. Louis and Chicago area in both events. The winner of the 25 yard freestyle event set a new State YMCA record at 13.22 seconds. That record stood since 1962. The Illinois/Missouri Area Meet encompassed 1563 swimmers from 66 YMCAs, all of whom qualified through their District meets.

Emilee Gorrell, 9, from Canton and Lauren Frazier, 11, also from Canton, qualified for the State Meet as well. Gorrell placed 13th in the preliminaries of the 50 yard freestyle with a personal best time of 36.61. Lauren Frazier placed 11th in the 50 freestyle and 12th in the 100 yard freestyle events with times of 29.78 and 1:06.58, respectively. Neither of the girls advanced the final round but both scored points for the Quincy team with top16 finishes. Quincy Family YMCA swimmers met qualifying time standards at the Illini District Meet in early March in Springfield, Ill. The Dolphin swim team will begin their spring/summer season in April at the Quincy Family YMCA. New swimmers are encouraged to join the summer swim team as part of the local River Country league. The team also has opportunities for advanced competitive swimmers to enter longcourse meets as part of USA Swimming for the summer season.

Four Culver-Stockton College student-athletes have been named Heart of America Athletic Conference players of the week in their respective sports, the league announced Monday afternoon. Junior Cyrus Wimberly was named Baseball Pitcher of the Week after hurling a 1-0 shutout against Peru State last Saturday. Wimberly, a 6-1, 190-pound junior righthander from Rockford,

during the Wildcat Open last Saturday. Barger, a freshman from Buhl, Idaho (Buhl HS), set school records in the 800 and the 1,500 meter runs. She set a new school record in the 1500-meters with a time of 5:12.59 before winning the 800-meters with a record time of 2:30.39.

Meanwhile, McBride, a junior from Riverside, Calif. (LaSierra HS) captured the discus and the hammer throw Saturday at the Richeson Track and Field Complex. He won the discus with a throw of 131 feet, 11 ½ inches, and the hammer throw with a toss of 119 feet, 1 ¼ inches.

John Sharpe and family would like to thank everyone for the prayers, cards, food and visits during his hospital stay. They were very much appreciated. We feel very blessed to live in a community where so many care.
