National Wildlife Refuge Renamed in Honor of Senator Dale Bumpers
ANNUAL KIDS FREE FISHING DERBY
The Annual Kids Free Fishing Derby sponsored by DeWitt High School East Lab, in cooperation with AGFC, and the Grand Prairie Ruritan Club will be April 26 at the DeWitt City Park lake. Registration will begin at 8:30 with fishing from 9:00 – 11:00 a.m. Promptly at 11:00, all hooks out of the water for weigh-in and awarding of prizes. Kids must be 15 or younger to participate. No entry fees. Come out and enjoy this special day of fishing fun for the entire family at DeWitt City Park.

After several recollections and humorous anecdotes, his son took the podium and delivered a heartfelt acceptance speech for the renaming. Born August 12, 1925 in
Charleston, AR, Dale Bumpers represented the state of Arkansas as its 38th Governor followed by a four-term stint as a U.S. Senator. He attended the University of Arkansas, served in the Marine Corps during World War II and took a law degree from Northwestern University. As U.S. Senator (1975-1999), Mr. Bumpers served on the Appropriations Commit-

tee, the Energy and Natural Resources Committee and chaired the Small Business Committee. He was instrumental in the addition of 41,000 acres to the White River and Cache River National Wildlife Refuges, and as Governor, aided in the ceasing of channelization of 232 miles of the Cache River and its tributary, Bayou DeView.

DeShaun Maurice Gaither
Frank A. Theising
DeShaun Maurice Gaither (Shaun or Muff ), 35, of DeWitt, died Wednesday, April 16, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born January 9, 1979, in DeWitt, he was the son of Danny Todd Fitzpatrick, Betty Lois Gaither Wofford and Sugar Ray Wofford. DeShaun was a member of First Baptist M.B.C in Dewitt, AR. His favorite sport was basketball. He was employed at Belleville Shoe Factory in DeWitt, AR. DeShaun is survived by his Parents; Danny Todd Fitzpatrick, of DeWitt, Betty Lois Gaither Wofford and Sugar Ray Wofford of Cascoe, AR; one Brother, Danny Todd Fitzpatrick Jr. of DeWitt; three sisters: Latasha Gaither, of Jacksonville, AR, Karmesia O’Donell, of Conway, AR, Dominique Slater, of DeWitt and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other close relatives and friends. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 25, from 5:00-6:00 p.m. at First Baptist Missionary Baptist Church in DeWitt. The funeral service will be on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at 1 p.m. at DeWitt High School. The service is entrusted to McKinzie Funeral Home of DeWitt.
Frank A. Theising, 89, of Breese, IL, born June 29, 1924 in Bartelso, IL, died April 17, 2014 in Breese. He was married to Mary (Dolly) Glaub on June 29, 1948. Frank served in the Army during World War II as a rifleman with the 132nd Infantry Regiment of the American Division in the South Pacific Region where he earned a Combat Infantryman Badge and two Bronze Star medals. After the suspension of hostilities in August 1945, Frank returned to his pre-war profession as a land surveyor with the 657th Topo Battalion as Party Chief for land surveys in Japan and much of South Korea. He was discharged from the Army in November of 1946 as a Staff Sergeant. In May of 1955, he joined the Engineering firm Sverdrup & Parcel of St. Louis and was involved in bridge construction across most major rivers in the eastern half of the United States, from Kansas to the Atlantic Coast, including the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel crossing and construction of the high level Bridge of the Americas across the Pacific entrance to the Panama Canal. He was resident engineer for the construction of the world’s largest VSTOL wind tunnel for Lockheed Georgia Company, a number of projects for Anheuser Busch including relocation of the Refrigerated Cabinet Division to Conway, AR, the new Miller Brewery at Eden, NC, “from cow pasture to beer production in 11 months.” He was also resident engineer for construction of launch facilities for the Trident submarine at Groton, CT, and Trident service facilities at King’s Bay, GA. He retired from Sverdrup in November 1990, as Construction Manager. He was a member of American Legion Post 252 in Breese, the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Carlyle, the Knights of Columbus and Catholic War Veterans at Bartelso and was a member of the Heritage Foundation. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Rosa Theising; brother, Ray; sisters, Marie, Rose, Elsie, Fran and Josephine and a great granddaughter Elizabeth. Surviving are his wife, Mary; brother, Joe; daughters, Polly, Pat and Julie; sons, Frank and Tom; 9 grandchildren and 12 greatgrandchildren. His funeral will be a private service in Breese at a date to be announced.
Obituary Earlene Cupples Earlene Cupples, 77, of Hot Springs passed away on Sunday, April 13, 2014. She was born on May 12, 1936 in DeWitt, to the late George and Delia Bullock. She was of the Pentecostal faith and a homemaker. Survivors include five sons: George “Tom” Cupples of Heber Springs, Charles Cupples, James Cupples, Willard Cupples and Terry Cupples, all of Hot Springs; two brothers, Darrell Bullock of Arlington, Texas and Ronnie Bullock of Jonesboro, AR; three sisters, Ruby Gilliaum of Newport, Stella Cave and Judy Copeland, both of Sheridan and eleven grandchildren. Memorial services will be Thursday, April 24, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. at Hot Springs Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Jerry Steward officiating.
Obituary Harmon Eugene Hornbeck Harmon Eugene Hornbeck, age 73, of DeWitt died April 18, 2014. He was born October 3, 1940 in DeWitt to Harmon Lee and Dorothy Mae Bullock Hornbeck who preceded him in death along with two brothers, Waymon and Terry. He worked as a land surveyor and truck driver, was an avid hunter and outdoorsman and was a member of First United Methodist Church of DeWitt. Survivors include his wife: Cheryl Morgan Hornbeck; sons: James “Jimmy” Hornbeck and David Hornbeck all of DeWitt; granddaughter: Morgan Jade Hornbeck; grandson: River Goodell; chosen grandchildren: Abby and Ryan Noblin; sisters: Joan Jacobs of DeWitt, Jeanette Woodiel (Shelby) of DeWitt, Emmie Vansandt (Kenny) of Marianna, Paulette Criswell of DeWitt, four nephews, two nieces, one great niece and one great great niece. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, April 22nd, at First United Methodist Church, DeWitt, with burial at Cedarcrest Memorial Gardens by Essex Funeral Home. Visitations were Monday, April 21, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Greetings Howdy Folks! Monday morning again! What did the Easter Bunny bring everyone? I had a very good Easter Sunday. After I swept my deck off (the Easter Bunny was there, you know), I actually cooked a full dinner (or should I say lunch). The Newkirks of St. Charles came over and ate with us. Well, that’s enough of me again! Hornbeck Services Our deepest condolences and our prayers go out to the family of Eugene Hornbeck’s family, all relatives and friends. Eugene went to be with his Heaven Father and Savior Friday, April 19th. His visitation services were held at Essex Funeral Chapel of DeWitt on Monday, the 21st from 6:00-8:00 p.m. The funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 22nd at 11:00 a.m. under the direction of Essex Home. Cheryl, we love you and your family, and as long as we are here, let us know. That’s what friends are for. Right, folks? Obituary Luthelma Brickey Luthelma Devine Wright Brickey, of Pine Bluff, died April 19, 2014 at her home at the age of 65. She was born January 22, 1949 in DeWitt to Dewey and Dorothy Wright, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, James O’Neal Brickey. They were married August 13, 1966 and were married 40 years before his death. Also preceding her were three children: Mark, Tina and a stillborn baby girl, two sisters, Gladys and Lucile, six brothers, Edward, Richard, Thomas, Johnny Alvie and James. She was a member of the General Assembly and Church of the First Born which she joined September 7, 1964. She is survived by her ten children, five boys: Michael of Pine Bluff, Eric (Theresa) of Purcell, OK, Kevin (Angie) of Lexington, OK, David (Tiwana) of Little Elm, TX, Dustin (Tonya) of Hobart, OK; five daughters: Marcella Burnett and Sheila Wilkinson (Jearald) of Lexington, OK, Shelly Edwards (Daniel) and Heather Green (Billy) of Hobart, OK, Crystal Fisher (Glen) of DeWitt, twenty six grandchildren, three great grandchildren; three sisters: Evon Watkins of Pine Bluff, JoAnne McFarlin of Parkland, OK, Geneva Atteberry of Las Vegas, NV; six brothers: Eugene, Royce, Nolan, and Oscar Wright of DeWitt, Bobby Wright of Hobbs, NM and Luther Wright of Lovington, NM along with a host of family and friends. Meghan is a 2010 graduate of Woodlawn High School and attended SEARK in Pine Bluff, AR. She is employed with First Electric Cooperative in Stuttgart. The prospective groom is the son of Eduardo and Pam Castaneda, of DeWitt, and David Schimmel, of Pine Bluff. He is the grandson of Gertrude Schimmel, of Pine Bluff, and the late Anthony Schimmel, Leonard Isom and Ruth Isom. Joseph is a 2006 graduate of DeWitt High School and attended the University of Monticello in Monticello, AR. He is employed with Yusen Logistics in Stuttgart. DeWitt School District to Undergo Advanced Assessment Next week the DeWitt School District will undergo an AdvancED accreditation review. As part of this review, a review team from AdvancED, formerly known as the North Central Association, will evaluate DeWitt School District and its schools on five standards: purpose and direction, governance and leadership, teaching and assessing for learning, resources and support systems, and using results for continuous improvement. In preparation for this visit, both the school district and each of its schools have: • Conducted and analyzed stakeholder surveys from parents, students and certified staff. • Analyzed and summarized student achievement data from state and local assessments. • Conduct a self-assessment of the current level of performance in regard to the five AdvancED accreditation standards. • Developed an executive summary from the information in the self-assessment. After accreditation is complete, the school district will submit a progress report in the spring of 2015 to explain its progress in the implementation of the recommendations by the External Review Team.

The Key EHC met at the home of Myra Mullin Thursday, April 17, 2014. Plans for Annexation West of Grandview Begin to Take Shape

By Terrye Seamon Dynamite may come in small packages, but sometimes bigger is better. And that is what the DeWitt City Council is keeping in mind as they consider possibly expanding the city limits by annexing land west of Grandview. As of yet, no definitive boundary line has been decided on, and City Attorney T. Buie recommended that the area be surveyed in order to help establish that official definitive boundary. The DeWitt City Council decided that they would start canvassing residents of the area to see if they would be interested in possible annexation of city limits. “The few that I’ve heard from are,” said Mayor Ralph Relyea. If residents are interested in the idea, then the City can proceed with the next phase of the process. If the annexation were to happen, then the increase in the number of residents within city limits would increase the city’s turn back funds. In the area of new business, Mayor Ralph Relyea told the Council that the Highway Department wanted to resubmit the 13th Street repair project to the Street Aid Grant Committee for further consideration. The total cost of the project is approximately $400,000, and the grant would cover up to $250,000 if received. The project, which covers 13th Street from Jefferson to Main and Highway 1, involves some engineering work in order to repair the street. “This was more than just an overlay. It involved some engineering work, so it was not included in our first submission. I actually submitted it, but it had to be engineered before the committee could consider it,” said Relyea. The engineering plan was to add drainage on one side with a curb and gain an additional 12-18 inches to the width of the street. Council members unanimously passed Ordinance 2014-3 which approves funding an engineering deposit of $5000 that will be applied to the City’s portion of the project. If the city does not receive the grant, the $5,000 will be returned to the City. In another area of new business, the Council approved a motion to accept Carroll Mannis Lawn
Care’s bid for mowing the DeWitt City Park. Mannis’s bid included mowing the park, weed eating, spraying and limb removal for $330 per mowing. Mannis is scheduled to start once everything dries up. The park is usually mowed approximately every week during the summer months until August when mowing may not be required every week depending on rainfall. The Council unanimously passed a motion to increase the pay of the position of the overseer of the city transfer station to $10 per hour. The overseer is certified to manage actions at the transfer station and makes sure that certain guidelines are met. The state recognizes that employees who work at least 30 hours a week as full-time and receive the base pay of $10 an hour. The current person in the position, Janeal Lane, works three days a week at the transfer station and two afternoons a week at the paper recycling station, which is a total of 32 hours a week. Passage of this motion will equalize her pay with other city employees working the same number of hours as mandated by the state. The Mayor also notified Council members of possibly having to ban city residents from burning leaves in the future. He told the Council that he has been approached about the idea because of health concerns for residents who are allergic, asthmatic and have medical issues concerning smoke inhalation. The mayor said that if interested parties can present the Council with a petition with twenty signatures, then the Council will look for a solution to the problem. One of those solutions could possibly be applying for a grant that would help the City purchase a leaf vacuum system since the situation may prove to be a health hazard issue. “If it’s affecting a significant number of people, then it’s something [to look into],” said Relyea. In another matter of old business concerning commercial garbage collection, the Mayor informed Council members that currently the city still has not received the contract from Waste Management.
DeWitt Authorized for Share of State Facilities Partnership Funding Funds for facility repair and building projects in 54 school districts across the state were authorized recently by the three member commission of agency chiefs. DeWitt School District was one of the districts slated to receive funding for projects submitted during the 2012 submission cycle. The funding is part of the state money provided to school districts for repair, expansion, and construction of academic facilities. The master plan submitted in 2012 contained two partnership projects, a roof proposal for DeWitt High School, and funding to assist in building a new middle school. State aid or partnership funds for such projects are determined by the school district property tax and the number of students in the district. The wealth index for DeWitt is presently .64892 which means the state will pay approximately 35% of a funded partnership project or almost $1.39 million dollars for the $4 million plus middle school project as it was submitted in 2012. The state construction funding depends on school districts providing the matching funds. Failure by districts to raise their share of the costs can alter plans as occurred in the DeWitt district in 2010 when vot-
ers overwhelmingly rejected the plan to build a new middle school on the old football field at the present middle school site. Failure by a school district to provide for improving facilities to standards can result in monitoring and assistance from the Facilities Division, a branch of the Arkansas Department of Education, or in some cases, districts could be placed into facilities distress, which can lead to a state takeover or merger with other districts. Presently, five districts that failed to pass a millage increase are being monitored with revised plans for those districts expected. Terry Granderson, the division’s assistant director said, “By failing a millage, a district expressed a need. We had agreed they had a need and set money aside for it and now they can’t get local support to come up with their side of it.” The next step for the DeWitt School District will be for the Board of Directors to consider accepting the state funding and moving forth with a proposed millage election later in the year. The board and superintendent are working with the district’s architect and financial advisor to determine the best plan of action for the district.

Base Things of the World Has God Chosen By William Wood =Go into a city after the sun goes down and walk the streets, if you dare, and you will find sin there. Watch when the night is the darkest, and the wind is howling, and you will find sinners there, looking for a place to break in and steal. Go to our jail house and walk through its cells, and you will find men there whose faces betray their evil thoughts, men you would not like to meet at night. Go to our Juvenile Detention Centers and you will find sinners there who have chosen to rebel against Family and the laws of land, and their ambition is to be released to continue the same. Go across the ocean to darkest Africa, to a place where men will chew on a bone that came from a human body, and there are sinners there. Go to the different Governments of the world and you will find intelligent, educated sinners there. Go into the churches across the nation, and you will find religious sinners in them. Go where you will, you need not go far to find sinners on every street, and in most houses. My point is this, if you will show me the worst sinners on Earth we can still have hope for him yet, because Jesus Christ come to seek and save sinners! Man born of woman was born a sinner and separated from God. He needs to be brought back into God’s Fellowship. God takes those of us who are worthless and lost and transforms us into sons and daughters of His! His redeeming love has set apart many of the worst of mankind and changed them from Sinners to Saints. Let the poorest and the most despised of sinners lay hold of this privilege, and turn to Christ honestly and sincerely and his heart and his life will be forever changed! This is God’s redeeming love, offered to us who were born of woman. He offers us a new Birth in the supernatural, spiritual realism, and it is the only door into Eternal Life! Will you serve the one who created the world from nothing, and holds it steady on unseen pillars? Will you still run from the one who stoops from such work to take you by the hand and preserve your life for Eternity? If you won’t then remember this, He is the Controller of your next heart beat, and your next breath. You are entirely at His mercy concerning your next hour on this Earth! He who feeds the furnace of the sun, so that it never goes out, watches you to see what your choice will be! Will you still choose the world and its temporary pleasures (so called) or will you sit down and think soberly about where you are going when He takes your soul and spirit out of this body? Riches in Christ By Pastor Steve Ellison We would all agree that money does not buy happiness. We would all sign our name to that creed. However, on the day when cash runs short, we all waver. Just ruin a tire and have no money with which to purchase another and our creed fails us. Let the refrigerator quit and have no money in the bank and we lose our happiness very quickly. Who among us would not be happy to have a bank account which not only never ran dry but never even diminished no matter how much we withdrew? The answer is obvious. We would all like to have such a bank account. We would love to be able to make regular large withdrawals without the balance ever dropping. This financial wish is a pipe dream but believers in Christ already have exactly that type of spiritual bank account. Ephesians 1:3-8 spells it out, “ Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4 just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him. In love 5 He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will, 6 to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved. 7 In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace 8 which He lavished on us.” (NASU) When God saved us, He established the greatest trust fund ever created. We have been given every spiritual blessing in Christ. We have been made blameless before God. We have been adopted into God’s family. God’s grace has been freely bestowed on us. We have redemption and our sins are forgiven not simply out of Christ’s riches but according to Christ’s riches. The richest Being in the universe lavished His grace on us. There are enough resources in heaven to cover all your past debts, present liabilities, all future needs and still not diminish your account. God has established the greatest spiritual trust fund imaginable. Ephesians 1, Galatians 4, and Romans 8 among other places tell us that those who trust Christ have been adopted into God’s family. This adoption makes us heirs of God, fellow heirs with Christ. The merciful Judge has released the criminal from his debt. The merciful Judge did not parole but rather gave full pardon to the criminal. This truly remarkable mercy defies description. This mercy is followed up with real grace. The merciful Judge did not send the criminal on his way to fend for himself, but rather the merciful Judge adopted the criminal into His own family. The merciful Judge gave the criminal an inheritance. Oh and by the way, the criminal’s crime had been committed against the merciful Judge. The Christian (the pardoned and adopted criminal) receives a literal storehouse of spiritual riches. He is transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the Kingdom of Light. He is invited to dwell with God throughout eternity. He becomes a joint-heir with Christ. He is assured of sanctification. His slate with sin written all

That’s what the red moon that appeared on Tuesday night, April 15, was called a part of—for there are three others scheduled on October 8, Apr. 4, 2015 and Sept. 28, ’15. What makes these especially significant is that they all appear on the Jewish feasts of Passover (in the Spring) and Feast of Tabernacles (in the Fall). Interestingly, in the last 2,000 years there have only been eight times this cycle of four— called a tetrad—has appeared. And, only three of those happened on the above-mentioned Feasts. Even more interesting is that each time that’s happened something noteworthy has happened to the Jewish people. In 1492-93 the Jews were expelled from Spain by Queen Isabella. Some have conjectured that Columbus, who “sailed the oceans blue in 1492,” was either secretly a Jew or at least a sympathizer to them and saw the New World as a place to which they could escape. Israel became a state and returned to her homeland in 1948 and, once again, a tetrad of blood moons aligned with her Jewish Feasts. And, in 1967 the same thing occurred again, which happened to be the year of her Six-Day War and their reclaiming of Jerusalem. Consequently, some like pastors Mark Blitz of Seattle, Washington, and John Hagee of San Antonio, Texas, have written books about this phenomenon. Both of them are predicting that there will be some earthshaking events happening in Israel between now and September, ‘15 in Israel. And, who knows? They may be right. For some time now Israel has been keeping a close eye on Iran’s desire to make a nuclear bomb. They know (as does the rest of the civilized world) that this rabid Islamic nation hates the Jews and calls them “the little satan.” Thus, it’s very possible that Israel will launch a preemptive strike on their adversaries before the bomb can be completed. If so, hang on to your seats—for that will unleash a war in the Middle East like we’ve never seen before. Another interesting, current development right now in the Middle East is the peace agreement U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, is trying to put together. over it is wiped clean and righteousness is written on it. God’s name is placed on him. God’s Spirit lives in him, seals him, and keeps him safe in order to present him to Christ at the end of time. He has access to the very throne room of God. He is assured of God’s protection and provision. God will love him, teach him, train him, and discipline him. He’s been working on this since July 30, 2013 and has given the Palestinians and Israel until April 29, ’14, to formalize the peace pact. If that happens, we should closely watch what happens with regards to the West Bank, governorship of Jerusalem and the Temple Mount where the Islamic holy shrine, the Golden Dome on the Rock, currently sits. For years the Jews have wanted to rebuild their Temple on this site where their previous temples have sat. So, pay close attention to any future developments in these negotiations—for they are definitely a precursor to the appearance of the Anti-Christ, the Rapture of the Church, an attack on Israel by Gog and Magog, etc. But, dear Reader, there’s a word of caution in all of this: Even though Pastors Blitz and Hagee have strong arguments concerning the Blood Moons. . .how God said He’d use the “lights in the heavens as signs/signals” (Genesis 1:14). . . and how their appearance has seemingly coincided with significant events in Israel. . .we should not place our hope and trust in them or their predictions. Truly, no one but Jesus is going to be saying “You should have bought my book” when it’s all said and done. Therefore, we’d do well to heed Jesus’ words to “Watch, therefore—for you know not what hour your Lord does come. . .Therefore, be also ready— for in such an hour as you think not the Son of Man comes” (Matthew 24:42, 44). Yes, when it all comes down to it, it’s all about readiness. If you’re ready to meet the Lord, it matters not what the future holds for you know Who holds it. If you’re not ready, then you’d better get that way—for to those who are unprepared, He’ll come “as a thief in the night” and they’ll be like those who didn’t heed Noah’s warnings of the coming Flood and perished. COMMUNITY NEWS DeWitt Hospital and Nursing Home Hosts Annual Spring Fling Health Care and Blood Drive By Shelly Faulkner The DeWitt Hospital and Nursing Home held their annual Spring Fling Health Fair and Blood Drive on Tuesday, April 15. It was a huge success bringing in 129 units of blood this year beating last year’s by 20 units. A huge thank you to Rhonda Reed for chairing this event, and to DHNH Auxiliary members, and local businesses for donating supplies and door prizes. Also, thanks is owed to the American Red Cross, blood donor teams, and everyone who helped make this blood drive a success. Congratulations to local vendor teams who won this year. First place went to PCCUA, second place to Arkansas County Bank, and third place to Grand Prairie Physical Therapy. Gillett EHC Meets in April The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its April meeting on Tuesday, April 15, at The Paddy in Gillett with twelve people present and Anita Trimble as hostess. Margie Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Rose Ella Smith read an inspirational message based on Job 21:9 reminding us that God will always be our safe place and that He is always waiting for us to come home to Him. Becki Weinrich read the thought for the month: “Being challenged in life is inevitable, being defeated is optional,” by

Gillett had six people attend the EHC Spring Council meeting on April 9 at PCCUA/DeWitt campus. Several members also attended the bib workshop on April 15 at the DeWitt office. Letter to the Editor By Kenneth Danner As a city park user, I understand the closing of the park at night due to vandalism, but I cannot understand the police forgetting to open the gate and bathrooms. Sometimes the gate is open but not the bathrooms. I have seen kids walk from the playground to the bathrooms to find the doors locked, and the parents then leave the park. I have discussed this with the Mayor and Chief of Police twice, but the problem is still happening. I told the Mayor to have the Chief go check on the way to work but the weekend of the 8th it was still locked. If you have this problem, please call the police and report this and let the Mayor know. We have a nice park but need to be able to use it and the restrooms. Thank you.

This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water, and we want you to understand, and be involved in, the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources.
Where Does Our Drinking Water Come From? The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Our sources of water are two wells that pump from the Sparta Sand Aquifer.
How Safe Is The Source Of Our Drinking Water? The Arkansas Department of Health has completed a Source Water Vulnerability Assessment for DeWitt Municipal Waterworks. The assessment summarizes the potential for contamination of our sources of drinking water and can be used as a basis for developing a source water protection plan. Based on the various criteria of the assessment, our water sources have been determined to have a medium susceptibility to contamination. You may request a summary of the Source Water Vulnerability Assessment from our office.
What Contaminants Can Be In Our Drinking Water? As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; Pesticides and herbicides which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses; Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems; Radioactive contaminants which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to assure tap water is safe to drink, EPA has regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health.
Am I at Risk? All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. However, some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from small amounts of contamination. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. In addition, EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by microbiological contaminants are also available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline.
Lead and Drinking Water If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We are responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead.

Gillett Water Department 2013 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report We’re pleased to present to you this year’s Annual Drinking Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water, and we want you to understand, and be involved in, the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. Where Does Our Drinking Water Come From? The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. Our source of water is one well that pumps from the Sparta Sand Aquifer. How Safe Is The Source Of Our Drinking Water? The Arkansas Department of Health has completed a Source Water Vulnerability Assessment for Gillett Water Department. The assessment summarizes the potential for contamination of our source of drinking water and can be used as a basis for developing a source water protection plan. Based on the various criteria of the assessment, our water source has been determined to have a low susceptibility to contamination. You may request a summary of the Source Water Vulnerability Assessment from our office. What Contaminants Can Be In Our Drinking Water? As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and, in some cases, can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife; Inorganic contaminants such as salts and metals, which can be naturally occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming; Pesticides and herbicides which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses; Organic chemical contaminants including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems; Radioactive contaminants which can be naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to assure tap water is safe to drink, EPA has regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Am I at Risk? All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. However, some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/ AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from small amounts of contamination. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency’s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. In addition, EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by microbiological contaminants are also available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline. Lead and Drinking Water If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. We are responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. Pride of Gillett 4-H Club traveled to Scott Arkansas and took an educational field trip to Toltec Mounds on March 29. Club members enjoyed learning more about a National Historic Landmark, the Toltec Mounds site which comprises one of the largest and most impressive archeological sites in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Preserved there are Arkansas’s tallest American Indian mounds. Arkansas County 4-H offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, national origin, religion, gender, age, or disability. By Don Roth Lt. Gen. E. Kirby Smith assumed command of Confederate forces upon arriving at Gen. Sterling Price’s HQ on April 19. He quickly ordered Brig. Gen. James F. Fagan to take a 3500 cavalry strike force across the Ouachita to sever Gen. Steele’s communication with Little Rock. His service had matured while commanding an infantry brigade which he ably led at Prairie Grove and Helena. Now Brig. Gen. T. J. Churchill commanded those troops while the 36 year old former legislator and Mexican War veteran headed up the cavalry previously under Gen. Lucius M. Walker. His orders were to destroy Union depots at Little Rock, Pine Bluff and DeValls Bluff, after which, he was to place himself between the enemy and Little Rock. Brig. Gen. Joseph Shelby’s hard riding Missourians had been situated12 miles west of Camden when Smith called on Price to order him on a circuitous movement crossing the river north of Camden, to secure El Dorado Landing 26 miles below the city. The sweep drove Federal pickets toward the Ouachita and diverted attention from Fagan’s southwest linking movement. When he joined Shelby on April 23, the pro-active Missourian informed him of a heavily guarded wagon train en route to Pine Bluff. The cavalry chief thought the convoy a fine father to place in his cap and proceeded to use the rest of the day in the methodical issue of ammunition and rations. Inspections were made to weed out less able horses and riders for the hard march ahead. By midnight of the 24th, the column had put 45 miles behind them, halting southwest of Edinburg for a much needed rest. Here Shelby’s scouts reported the enemy’s location just short
of the Marks Mills community, now in southwest Cleveland County. Fagan realized with satisfaction that he had gained some distance ahead of the enemy like he had intended. With his two divisions he orchestrated a pincer movement against the Federal wagon escort as well as the wooded terrain allowed. Gen. Shelby’s division which included the slender brigade of Arkansas Col. John C. Wright succeeded in making a ten mile end run to reach the Mt. Elba road five miles east of Marks Mills. The westward charge from this position sealed the fate of the wagon train. Also unity of command was lost when Union Colonel Francis M. Drake was seriously wounded and disabled. The five hour battle resulted in heavy losses as both sides fought desperately. Like the April 18 Poison Spring debacle, the Union force suffered a loss of four artillery pieces and approximately 1200 troops. A major portion of the 300 wagons were also captured. Only 2500 dismounted Confederates actually participated while the rest served as horse holders. After the battle, and deducting the numbers lost from attrition and prisoner escort, this left Fagan with only 1500 troops to fulfill the mission assigned to him. Though the battle of Marks Mills was a sweeping success for the Confederates, Fagan attacked in violation of orders which were to get in between Camden and Little Rock after smashing depots at those places and DeValls Bluff. Marks Mills quickly became the turning point of the Camden Expedition which could spell ominous consequences for either side. (Edwin C. The word eternal in the Greek Lexicon has the meaning of (without beginning, and end: that which always has been, and always will be.) This can only pertain to one person, that is God; for he alone is without a beginning, and ending of life. The Hebrew word for God that describes him in the first stages of creation is Elohim. which means self existing one. There was no stars, no sun, no earth, no atoms, no air, there was nothing; just Elohim the great eternal spirit who had no beginning, and he dwelt alone with his thoughts of what he was going to do. We can understand something lasting a long time; for example we have the pyramids that have been around for thousands of years, but they had a beginning, and will have an end. Sea turtles I understand live for hundreds of years, but their life will eventually end; because it had a beginning. Anything that has a beginning has an end. What is eternal has no beginning nor end. In the seventh chapter of Hebrews there is a story about a man named Melchisdec who met Abraham after a battle. It tells us this man was without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor ending of life. So who ever this man was is still around today. Of course the description giving of this man Melchisdec identifies him as God almighty in a body made like unto the son of God. Disappearing as suddenly as he came, he was lost to the sacred writings for thousands of years; until he reappears on earth again manifesting himself in the person of Jesus Christ. 2nd Corinthians 5:19(God was in Christ , reconciling the world to himself.) God the creator came down ,and created a flesh body in the womb of a virgin that he was going to live in during
his earthly ministry. This flesh body of Christ had a beginning, and as we know it had an end on the cruel cross of Calvary; but the eternal person that lived in that body resurrected it from the dead. This is the body that the eternal God will live in through out eternity. Is not this what Jesus said, “If you see me you see the father.” They are one and the same. Romans 8:11( But if the spirit of him (a person) that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he (the person) That raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his (this persons) spirit that dwelleth in you). If the life of this eternal person is living in us through the new birth, it will also quicken our mortal bodies ,and raise us out from among the dead. Our lord told his disciples in John 14:7 (The spirit has been with you, but shall be in you.) The disciple Peter denied even knowing the Lord three times for fear of his own life. He done this by just having the spirit with him, not in him. After he was baptized with the life of this eternal person he was not a coward anymore, even when they crucified him at his own request he was crucified upside down, citing he was not worthy to be crucified as his lord was. A person can have the spirit with them all the days of their life, and die and go to hell. Jesus said you must be born again or you cannot enter the kingdom of heaven, not maybe you should or you ought to, he said you must be born again. Yes eternal life is a person, and this precious eternal person gave up that life on the cross in order to share it with you, and me.
