Lauren’s Garden

The “For the Long Run” 5K and 1 mile fun run/walk trail course to raise money for Dana’s House will take place on May 10th at 8 a.m. at the Arkansas Post National Memorial Park. The location has been used for other 5K events previously and consists of sidewalks, dirt, gravel and grass. A timing chip will be placed in participant’s shoes, but the volunteers can choose to walk the course or run.

The event was conceived at DeWitt High School East Lab, and is the brain child of two students: Rylee Knoll and Whitney Price. Proceeds benefit the transitional home for young adults graduating from Dana’s House, to be located at the old West Side school. You can register the day of the run or at www.forthelongrun.weebly.com to save $5.00. Participants will receive a t-shirt, but to guarantee the shirt, registration should be completed by April 29th. You may also pick up registration forms in the main office of Dana’s House or at Family Dental Associates.

Obituary Eva Bell (Dolly) Taylor Eva Bell (Dolly) Ham Taylor was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 10, 1919, the daughter of the late George W. and Ida Neel Ham. On October 10, 1988, she was united in marriage to Jesse Earl Taylor, who preceded his wife in death on May 25, 1997.

Mrs. Taylor was a former resident of Memphis, Tennessee. She worked at Baptist Memorial Hospital as a cashier in the Gift Shoppe. Mrs. Taylor was a member of Colonial Baptist Church in Memphis. She loved playing BINGO as often as she could.

Mrs. Taylor departed this life on April 10, 2014 in Savannah, Tennessee at the age of 94 years and 9 months .

She is survived by her daughter, Betty Goodwin Carnal of Savannah, Tennessee; three grandchildren, Regina Ann Johnson, Steven Ray Carnal and Scott Edward Dunn; four great grandchildren, Amanda Johnson, Brett Carnal, Alex Carnal and Claire Carnal.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was also preceded in death by one daughter, Carol Roach, one sister, Iva Barkley and two brothers, Elmer and Harry Ham. Services were held on April 13, 2014 at 1:30 p.m. at Shackelford Chapel in Savannah, Tennessee, with David Baker officiating. Burial followed in the Memory Gardens at Savannah, Tennessee.

Obituary Melanie Ann Navarro Melanie Ann Navarro, 71, died March 31, 2014, in Tallulah, LA. She was the oldest child of the late Charles and Louise Mattmiller. Ann was raised near Gillett, graduated from Gillett High School and from UCA in Conway, AR. She taught school in St. Charles and DeWitt, as well as Lake Providence and in Tallulah.

She is survived by her husband, George Navarro, of Tallulah; by five children: Chris Crafford, of Tallulah, Melanie (Rich) McNatt, of Rio Rancho, NM, Elise Navarro, of Oak Grove, LA, John (Toni) Navarro, of Monroe, LA and Beth Newton, of Shreveport, LA; six grandchildren: Justin Barboza, Carly, Rainey and Wyatt McNatt, Kade Klink and Chevy Navarro; seven sisters: Margaret Carlow of Gillett, Elizabeth (Dave) Fouss of Murfreesboro, TN, Marvella Melnick, of Beebe, AR, Freda Mattmiller, of Gillett, Carolyn DePascale, of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, Sherry (Al) Goff, of Dayton, TX and Darlene (Dale) Anderson, of Medford, WI; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Kevin here. Back after a short hiatus. Three weeks off the “korner” but I missed it. Several people have either asked me, asked friends or wrote in wanting to know where the column has been, so I figured it was time to bring it back.

Several reasons for the absence: one, I’ve been trying to improve in my position as editor of the paper, which can be a struggle at times. The pressures of getting the material gathered and edited, especially when our deadline’s approaching, gets intense.

Though I’m getting it down more and more, I’m still learning. Second reason is, I try to put other articles in first rather than my own. If there is space and it’s down to my column or something else, I have always gone with the latter. The last reason, I’ve been going through somewhat of a tough ride in my sea. I know there are crests and troughs when riding the waves, but, recently my wave broke and I crashed and rolled through the reefs. Trying to fix that. Trying to get back up and ride again.

Thank you to everyone who reads the column and to those who’ve reached out. Thank you to those who have sent in cards and letters expressing their enjoyment of it and for wanting to know where I’ve been.

I am still here.

I will make sure going forward the column appears as much as possible. I’m not sure if the majority of the readers care. I mean, what do I have to say? But I guess I’ll just keep riding the waves. Keep writing.

Keep talking, even if no one listens. Even if it’s to myself. As Charles Bukowski once said, “I have seen the red rose burning/and this means more.

Kindergarten Make-up Day Registration DeWitt Public Schools will offer a kindergarten registration make-up day for those unable to attend earlier. The Kindergarten registration make-up day will be held Friday, May 2nd, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. on the DeWitt and Gillett Elementary campuses.

This registration is for any child who will be five (5) years old on or before August 1, 2014. Parents will need to bring several documents on the day of registration. An official birth certificate or other approved age documentation as well as the child’s social security card is needed. Your child’s current immunization or shot records will be collected by the school nurse. If you have

participated in a well child check up recently, please bring it with you.

However, if you have not, a form to take to the physician will be offered.

Lastly, a proof of residence will be required.

This proof may be a utility bill, rental agreement or lease agreement. This year parents are asked to bring their child to the round-up. Your child will be given a short skills checklist and then receive a gift for their participation.

The Career Pathways Initiative at Phillips Community College of the University of Arkansas (PCCUA)-DeWitt an-

nounces Jeri Brown as the ‘Student of the Quarter’ for the 2014 spring semester. Brown was selected by the criteria set forth by the Career Pathways program. Such criteria includes academic excellence, personality, and compliance with all Career Pathways guidelines.

In the spring of 2013, Brown joined the Career Pathways program and earned an Employability Certificate. She said that her greatest concern was being able to take care of

her children and pay the bills while attending college, adding that Career Pathways helped to ease some of that stress.

Jeri Brown is a single mother of two. She grew up in DeValls Bluff and is currently living in DeWitt and attending PCCUA as a full-time student. Majoring in office technology – medical option, her goal is to obtain a job in the medical field. Brown feels that PCCUA instructors are willing to help with any problem that she may

have and defines this as a great college experience.

Career Pathways is designed to improve the earnings and post-secondary attainment of Arkansas low-income adults and help them obtain the skills needed to earn a college degree and marketable job skills. Extension Service Sponsors Brucellosis Clinic for Heifer Calves Grant Beckwith, County Extension Agent - Agriculture The UofA Cooperative Extension Service in Arkansas County will be conducting the Spring Brucellosis Vaccination Clinic on Thursday, April 24. Heifer calves 4-12 months of age which have not been previously vaccinated are the targeted group. If you have calves meeting this criteria and would like to have them vaccinated, please contact the Extension Office at 870-946-3231 or 870-673-2346 by April 18 to enroll. We will need

the directions for reaching your farm as well as a phone number that can be used to contact you in the event of schedule changes on that day. You may also indicate if you have a preferred time frame (such as morning or afternoon). We will do our best to accommodate you, although we do have to follow a general geographic order. A schedule indicating the time you can expect the vaccinator to be at your farm will be provided prior to

“The Wrath To Come” (Matt 3:7)

By William Wood It is pleasant to go through the land after a storm has spent itself. To smell the freshness of the earth and see the drops of rain that glisten like great diamonds in the Sunlight. To realize that we have been spared from the destruction of a tornado that has become so common in recent years. That is the position of a christian, he is living in a land where God’s judgment is already being poured out, but His faith stands solid on the promise that says, “I will never learn thee, nor forsake thee.” If there happens to be a few drops of sorrow that comes to us from a passing storm, we realize that they were not meant for our destruction, and our Loving Lord encourages us with this knowledge! But how terrible it is to witness the approach of a tornado, to hear the warnings on TV, to witness the deadly calm and stillness that usually comes just before the destroying wind! To see the sky turn black and angry looking, and see the birds disappear into wherever it is they go to hide from the storm. And if you are a nature observer you may see the cattle lay their heads low in fear. How fearful it is to see all this, and wait in apprehension for it to strike. Realizing it can tear up huge trees by the roots and tear down the houses that men are hiding in, and tear huge rocks from their resting place! And yet sinner, who has refused to repent, this is your present position! Perhaps no deadly wind has yet blown on you, but God is getting His tempest ready. As yet the fire is held back by mercy, but it is in His storehouse, waiting His orders to be cast on the Earth. How awful that day will be when God, in vengeance, shall declare that mercy is over and will come forth in fury! Where will unrepentant man go to hide then? There is no such place! Every fox will be dug out of its hole, every sinner will reap his just reward. We pray for our town and its unsaved people, that the Hand of Mercy will lead you to Jesus Christ. You know your need of Him, believe in Him, cast yourself on Him. Then His fury will be passed from you forever. A storm cellar of concrete and steel will not help when His wrath is come. We need a storm shelter made with feathers. We need to be under His wings when the storm comes. Amen!

Hagar and the Angel of The Lord

Genesis 16 records the very first appearance of the Angel of the Lord to a human being. “Angel of the Lord” occurs fifty-six times in the Old Testament and twelve times in the New Testament. The story of Hagar, a young, pregnant Egyptian servant girl provides the setting. The father of the baby was Abram, the servant’s owner/master. This made Sarai, the man’s wife, angry even though it had been Sarai’s idea in the first place.

Sarai treated Hagar harshly so Hagar fled into the wilderness. This young foreign girl found herself sitting by a well in the wilderness far from home without friends or resources. Most students of the Old Testament believe that many of the Old Testament appearances of the Angel of the Lord are none other than the Second Person of the Godhead. Genesis 16:13 makes this appearance seem to be an appearance of Christ.

These Old Testament appearances of Christ accomplish two things. They prepare us to be ready for the Incarnation of Christ. They also allow our loving, gracious, and merciful Savior to meet us where we are and in our time of need. Hagar must have been afraid, hungry, and lonely. Christ met Hagar where she was and comforted her. While He made Hagar some marvelous promises, He did not tell her that everything was going to be exactly the way she wanted it. The Angel of the Lord gave her a very difficult, if not impossible, command. Christ told this young servant girl to return to the mistress who was treating her harshly and submit.

Submit: now there is a dirty word if there ever was one.

You do not like to submit and neither do I. In effect, Christ met all of Hagar’s needs but it was likely not in a way that Hagar wanted. My observation in my own life and in the lives of others tells me that Christ often works that way today. Returning and submitting would relieve Hagar’s fear, hunger, and loneliness.

How was it possible for Hagar to return to and submit to a mistress who was mistreating her? How is it possible for you and me to submit? Genesis 16:13-14 provides the answer, “Then she called the name of the Lord who spoke to her, “You are a God who sees”; for she said, “Have I even remained alive here after seeing Him?” Therefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi.”

(NASU) The only way we (Hagar, you, me) can obey such a command is that we see the Living God and live.

Hagar give the well a new name, Beer-lahai-roi, which means “The Well of the Living One who Sees Me”.

More astonishingly it seems that Hagar gave Christ a new name. Hagar is the only one I recall who gave Christ a name. She called Him “The God who Sees”.

There seems to be a play on words here in the Hebrew.

It seems that Hagar is saying, “God sees me. I see Him. I see Him who sees me.” When God reveals Himself to us as the “One Who Sees and Cares”, then and only then can we obey His command to submit to unjust mistreatment. This is a view of God that allows us to take what life throws at us. When we realize that this great big Creator God really sees us and cares for us, then we are transformed. Hagar returned to the home of Abram and Sarai as a new person. We are not told what sort of reception that Hagar received from Sarai.

On Missing the Boat

By Tom Smith If you haven’t gone to see it, don’t waste your money—unless you want to see why the director called “the most unbiblical Biblical story ever produced.”

Darrren Aronofsky’s assessment of “Noah” is certainly an accurate one. In most movies—even those that spring from a bestselling novel—there’s usually some poetic license taken, i.e., a deviating from the original script. But, in the case of “Noah,” there’s hardly a resemblance between the Biblical account and this Hollywood version.

I’d read reviews on the movie and most Christian critiques were quite critical. In fact, Ken Ham, a leading creationist, said the new blockbuster, starring Russell Crowe, is an insult to Christians: “Ultimately, there is barely a hint of Biblical fidelity in this film. It is an unbiblical, pagan film from its start.”

And, boy, was he right.

My wife and I went to see it primarily because I wanted to see for myself how much it deviated from the Genesis account. It didn’t take very long to find out, for right at the outset there’s a scene where Noah’s father, Lamech, is killed by Tubal-cain, an eighth-generation descendant of Cain, who killed his brother, Abel. There’s nothing in the Bible about this; in fact, it says Lamech died at the ripe old age of 777 (Gen. 5:31).

From Lamech’s death until the end of the movie, the film distorts the Biblical story in a variety of way. It depicts Noah as a dark, foreboding individual whose vision of building the ark comes after drinking some type of magical potion. Later on in the film, he leaves the girlfriend of his son, Ham, to die by being trampled on by an advancing army. Consequently, Ham began to hate his father and ultimately leaves the family without having been cursed by Noah after seeing his nakedness after getting drunk (Gen. 9:20-27).

It’s clear in Gen. 6:1-7 that the reason God destroyed everything on the earth with the great Flood was because of man’s rebellion against God and inhumanity to man; yet, Aronofsky’s version blames it on man’s sin against the environment.

Where Jesus Christ Is Always Present In Word and Sacrament Pastor Chad Philipp

The Bible also clearly states the only ones aboard the Ark were Noah, his wife, three sons and their wives (Gen. 7:7). But, in Tinseltown’s version Tubal-cain breaks into the Ark as the Flood waters rose and later attempts to kill Noah after killing several of the animals aboard the Ark. And, there was only one other female on the boat—a young girl Noah and his family saved from death, who fell in love with Japeth—even though the Bible said there were three daughters-in-law aboard.

No wonder someone once wrote “Hollywood making a movie about the Bible is like the mafia writing a book on crime prevention.”

And, in Aronofsky’s case, he definitely (and intentionally) missed the boat with “Noah.”

From the outset—with the ominous words “In the beginning there was nothing,” while the Bible says “In the beginning God” (Gen. 1:1)— the movie distorts and blatantly contradicts Biblical truth. Noah “found Grace in the eyes of the Lord” and “was a just, spiritually-mature man who walked with God” (Gen. 6:8-9), not the dark, wanting-todestroy-the-world psychopath depicted in the film.

Likewise, Aronofsky chose to depict the “sons of God” (Gen. 6:2), the “nephilim,” as fallen angels, who became rock creatures named “Watchers” and helped protect the ark as the Flood waters rose.

When finally overcome by Tubal-cain’s army, their spirits were whisked back to Heaven, even though the Bible describes the fallen angels as satan’s cohorts who staged a rebellion against God in Heaven.

Needless to say, “Noah” makes a mockery of the Word of God and its true account of Noah, the Flood and the Ark. So, save your money and go see “God’s Not Dead” instead—for it’s a wonderful story of Christian courage under fire and how God uses us to make a difference when we let Him (NOTE: If you’d like to contact Bro. Bayou Meto 57th Annual Sunrise Service The Bayou Meto United Methodist Church will again welcome Easter morning with their 57th Annual Sunrise Service. This year the Service will begin at 7:00 a.m. The choir will be composed of singers from DeWitt and Stuttgart. When the tradition first began it would start at “true” sunrise and the processional of adult, junior and children’s choirs would enter the Sanctuary just as the new day was dawning. Today we still celebrate the dawn, we just do it at 7 and we only have one choir. The story is the same one that our faith has celebrated for centuries and many of the hymns sung are the familiar songs of long ago. All are invited to attend the service and stay after for brunch and coffee in the fellowship hall. If you or your family would like to experience Easter morning as it has been celebrated on the prairie for decades, then please plan on joining us for this “New Day.”

I know that they really went to spoil that baby! Shame shame, Ida and Nina.

I do miss you guys. I do understand that they will be home Monday (20th).

Buddy and Janice Noble traveled to Stuttgart to visit with Mrs. Alice Horton of Crestpark NH in DeWitt, who was a patient at Baptist Health Hospital. We all are hoping that Mrs. Alice is back home by now and we hope that she is feeling better now.

J.W. Aycock and Frank Strickland traveled to Little Rock, for J, W. to see his electrophyilogist, Dr. Steven Greer, Monday, (14th). No, I’m not that hard or mean, am I?? On to the next paragraph, please.

Liz Criswell of DeWitt, formally of St. Charles, has moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Pam and Danny Eason, so that they can take care of her.

Liz has several health problems, (as all of us do in our generation, including myself). They also have a larger home.

I congratulate Pam and Danny for this move! God will reward you for this, I’m sure.

Social Work Students Present Papers at Fort Lincoln Fest State Conference in Southern Heritage Little Rock

The first annual Fort Lincoln Fest Southern Heritage Wild Game Dinner will be held at the beautifully restored old DeValls Bluff School Gym on Saturday, April 26th from 5:30-8:30. By Margaret Aycock Well, howdy ya’ll! You know, if I did not love my job, I would just go back to bed, sleep all day and get up and watch TV till I’m sleepy again. But, I do not want to disappoint my fan club, so here goes.

I guess everybody that likes horses, knows by now, who won the Arkansas Derby in Hot Springs, Saturday? I love horses, and I consider them one of the most beautiful animals on earth!

I do not hardly get to go, but, that does

not stop me from liking horses. Anyway, a 41-1 odds (whatever that means) named Danza won the derby. I wish.

Ida Newkirk and her cousin, Nina Fraize, both of St. Charles traveled to Sheveport, LA last Sunday, (13th) to spend the week with Ida, sister and brother -in-law, Carolyn and Harry Rouse. While there, they also visited with Carolyn and Harry’s daughter, visit because they were able to go to several auctions, and shopping. Also,

Two social work students from the University of Arkansas at Monticello presented an original research poster at the 35th annual conference of the Arkansas chapter of the National Association of Social Workers in Little Rock on April 2-4.

Alma De La Cruz of Crossett and Alex Black of Monticello presented their research on the Youth Promise Act, a bill currently being considered by Congress which aims to address prison reduction by providing communities with needed funding to effectively address youth violence. The bill makes provisions for mentoring, intervention, and education assistance to vulnerable youth. De La Cruz and Black received honorable mention recognition for

their work promoting the bill.

Two UAM faculty members also presented research. Marie Walker and Donna Taylor,assistant professors of social work, presented research on “The Phenomenon of Adultism: What Are We Doing to Our Children?” Their research examined stereotypical ideologies held about adolescents by society at large and presented opportunities to encourage youth to be more proactive in their community, their state and on legislative issues.

Nine UAM social work students attended the conference, participating in three days of educational seminars while networking with professionals from as far away as California.

Cook’s Lake Fishing to Be Re-openend

Cook’s Lake fishing on the second and fourth Saturdays during the months of March through October will be reopened to anglers fifteen years of age or younger on Saturday, April 26th.

The youth can be accompanied by no more than two adults using a boat with a trolling motor only and/or fishing from the floating pier. The lake level has receded to a point that is safe for all fishing activities at this time.

Between the Lines

Life as they knew it changed dramatically a little over a year ago for people in a small Arkansas town.

Thousands of gallons of heavy crude oil began spilling from a pipeline that many residents didn’t even realize ran under Mayflower (population 2,234), a quiet place blessed by its proximity to Lake Conway.

ExxonMobil’s Pegasus pipeline, which carried crude from Canada, ruptured on March 29, 2013. The resulting oil spill soaked a Mayflower neighborhood and threatened the lake, which has long been an enticing fishing locale for locals and for visitors.

Although a lot of work has been done to clear the crude away from the Faulkner County town, cleanup continues near the lake. So do lawsuits filed against ExxonMobil by the state of Arkansas and by citizens.

Families have had to relocate from homes most affected by the oil spill.

Many in the town suffer from health issues they say developed since the spill.

The stench of the oil certainly lingers there

as has the spill’s impact.

Mayflower is a different place, some contend, with long-term damage evidenced by lowered property values.

All of those issues are part of the ongoing litigation.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel, who filed a joint lawsuit with the U.S. Attorney’s office against ExxonMobil, recently made a frightening point.

The spill, thought to have dumped 200,000 of this heavy Canadian crude, could have been much worse.

“It could have been beneath the Arkansas River,” McDaniel said. Or it could have been in a less accessible place in the forest floor, hampering the response.

McDaniel was participating in a recent forum about the spill at the Clinton School of Public Service in Little Rock.

“We were lucky. Were you lucky if you lived in that neighborhood? No, of course not. But from an ecological standpoint, it could have been much more disastrous in different areas.”

The 65-year-old pipeline snakes through Arkansas

en route from Illinois to Texas, where a section of it may be reopened.

Theoretically, the pipe could have ruptured anywhere along the line, which has been in place so long that a couple of generations of Arkansans likely had no real clue of where it was, just like those Mayflower folks who were surprised last year.

Incidentally, they may appreciate the thought that a couple of hundred thousand gallons of crude oil in the Arkansas River would be a huge disaster, affecting many more people and properties.

But that thought doesn’t displace the concerns they have for their own community and the lasting impact of the spill that did occur.

Images from the yearlong saga define what had been a quiet town settled in between Conway and Little Rock on a stretch of Interstate 40, which carries many Mayflower citizens to jobs in the nearby towns.

The lasting images are of the thick, black liquid running down streets and between homes in the Northwoods subdivi-

sion, coating lawns and woods and even wildlife.

There are images of environmental workers clad in protective clothing wading the oil-covered water on the edges of Lake Conway. And images of people packed into meeting rooms, trying to get answers about what had happened and what anyone was going to do about it.

Even on Mayflower’s standing Web site, Mayor Randy Holland acknowledges the detrimental effect of the oil spill.

“Certainly, 2013 was not the greatest year,” he reported. But he praised first responders for their efforts to control the damage and protect the citizenry. He even said Exxon Mobil had done a good job of cleaning things up.

Mostly, the message focuses on the community’s future. Mayflower must “move forward,” he said, despite experiencing recession, flooding and this oil spill.

It is not an easy turn and the spill won’t be out of people’s minds any time soon.

State Capitol Week In Review

By Senator Jonathan Dismang Absentee voters would get a grace period in which they can present election officials with a copy of their photo ID, under a new rule approved by the state Board of Election Commissioners.

However, the procedure by which the rule was issued is under legal challenge. The Board voted on the rule to clarify provisions of Act 595 of 2013, which requires voters to present a government-issued photo ID in order to get a ballot.

The act sets out procedures that election officials are to follow when a person arrives at a voting place and cannot present a photo ID. The person is allowed to cast a provisional ballot and has until noon the following Monday to show a valid ID to the county clerk or to the local board of election commissioners.

Absentee voters are required to submit a copy of their photo IDs with their ballots. However, the act is unclear about

how to proceed when they fail to do so.

The rule approved by the state Board of Election Commissioners grants to absentee voters the same grace period that is provided to in-person voters who lack valid identification. They would have until noon the following Monday to show ID to the county clerk or local board of election commissioners.

The issue has been complicated by litigation and politics. The Pulaski County Election Commission has filed a lawsuit challenging the state Board’s authority to write rules that are not clearly spelled out in Act 595.

The judge in the case has scheduled hearings, not only to hear the merits of the lawsuit but also to set out a schedule. Parties in the case are seeking quick action so there will be no legal questions arising from the May 20 primaries.

Another complicating factor is the state attorney general’s role. After

special elections in January the attorney general was asked for an advisory opinion on what to do about absentee ballots with no accompanying photo ID. The opinion stated that Act 595 did not specifically allow additional time for absentee voters to present a photo ID, as it specifically does for in-person voters. Under the wording of Act 595 absentee voters would be treated differently than in-person voters, the opinion says.

In spite of the fact that the attorney general’s opinion apparently goes against the state Board’s policy on absentee ballots, the attorney general is representing the state Board in the lawsuit filed by the Pulaski County Election Commission because the attorney general represents state agencies when they are sued.

The state Republican Party has asked that a lawyer from outside the attorney general’s office

be appointed to defend the state Board, in light of the fact that the attorney general is now in the position of defending in court a policy that he publicly questioned in an advisory opinion.

The attorney general, a Democrat, maintains that his office can adequately represent the state Board in the lawsuit because the advisory opinion previously issued was a specific response to a specific question – what Act 595 says about absentee voters while the lawsuit is about a different issue, that is, the state Board’s authority to issue new rules.

Acceptable IDs include drivers’ licenses, passports, concealed carry permits, student IDs from accredited colleges and military identification cards. If you don’t have one of those forms of ID, you can get a valid photo ID for free at the county clerk’s office.

The Battle of Poison Springs

Lt. Gen. Kirby Smith on April 16 accompanied Gen. Sterling Price’s two divisions while en route to Camden where Union Gen. Steele was penned up. Together with Major Gen. John G. Walker’s Texas division, he positioned them in a circular arrangement across major roads to prevent any link with Gen. Banks.

Smith had departed Shreveport about the same time Steele entered Camden and the latter had not the slightest intention of moving south just yet. Desperation for food supplies to feed his 15000 men and numerous draft animals was now driving him.

On the morning of April 17, Col. James M. Wil-

liams left Camden with about 700 men of whom 440 belonged to the First Kansas Colored Volunteers---two guns and 198 wagons. By evening he was 14 miles from that city where he decided to encamp and at midnight, a large cache had been safely recovered from corncribs not six miles distant. At dawn on the 18th Col. Williams started the train back to Camden, while sending out details to collect the remaining corn from outlying farms along the return route. Sometime later they were reinforced by 500 men and two additional guns, increasing his force to 1170.

Meanwhile Confederate scouts in the area report-

ed Williams’s movement to Gen. John S. Marmaduke who swiftly deployed 1700 dismounted cavalry across the road. Gen. Samuel B. Maxey arrived on the field at 9:30 A. Facing west on the Upper Washington Road, Marmaduke’s men held the right, those of Brig. Gen William L. Cabell and Col William Crawford held the center. Missouri Col. Colton Greene’s 300 mounted troops waited in reserve.

The Union commander held firm for threequarter of an hour, hoping the sound of battle would bring support from Camden. When six of Marmaduke’s guns opened up catching Williams in a cross fire, the First Kansas fled in disorder.

The Choctaw portion of Maxey’s command chased them into in a nearby woods but the fighting stubbornly continued until 2 P.M.

Col. Williams horrific casualties amounted to 204 killed and missing and 94 wounded. Of these, 117 blacks died and 65 were wounded. Witnesses claimed the Confederates had ruthlessly killed black soldiers of the First Kansas after they had been wounded and captured. This was later denied but evidence supports the claim of a massacre at Poison Springs.

Total Confederate losses stood at 114 to all causes.

This was the first victory for Price since Steele left Little Rock a month earlier, providing a tremendous boost to Confederate morale. Grand Prairie Quilt Society The Grand Prairie Quilt Society met April 9, 2014 at Glenda’s house in Roe for the quarterly Sit’n Sew with seven members present. With much anticipation of an enjoyable day, each member set up their sewing machines and tables and set to work. Hoping to accomplish a little sewing along with the visiting and fellowship.

After a delicious potluck lunch, Glenda opened the meeting with the thought for the day.

Never underestimate the power of a woman with a sewing machine. The minutes and treasurer’s report were given and approved.

Under Old Business: Those who attended AWOL (Arkansas Wom-

en on the Loose) quilters retreat at the 4-H center in Ferndale in March reported on the good time that was had by all. Betty, Michele, Maeola, Glenda and Marsha all said they saw many beautiful quilts and got lots of new ideas and hints and were looking forward to the next AWOL in September.

During Show and Share: Marsha had several log cabin table runners she made at AWOL. Michele showed her monster quilt made for her grandson.

Glenda showed a lovely, antique appliqued butterfly quilt top belonging to her neighbor. She will be quilting it and we are all looking forward to seeing it when it is completed; Maeola had an impressive wildlife

print quilt that she had recently finished for her grandson. Winnie had a question for the group.

How to get started on a waterfowl quilt. She had several pieces of printed fabric and welcomed several suggestions from the group on how to put it together.

Under New Business: The next Cook’s Lake quilt class will be April 19. There will be no class in May, the next date in June will be June 14.

Two current quilt exhibits in Little Rock are: The Butler Center, 401 President Clinton Ave-”Southern Voices” textile works by the Studio Art Association, through May 24..501-918-3033.

Michele kept busy appliqueing flowers and ladybugs on a quilt for her great-granddaughter, Betty worked on an Ohio star quilt, Maeola cut out pieces for a new quilt, Sherrye also cut out quilt pieces, Winnie worked on her plans for her waterfowl quilt, Glenda continued putting together her

thousands of half-square triangles on her masterpiece-in-progress, and Marsha finished a few more log cabin blocks.

All in all it was a very successful day. All the mem-
