LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT April 4, 2014 - At approximately 6:00 p.m., a man came to DeWitt Police Department to report that he had been in an accident with a golf cart. He said he was pulling out of the east parking lot onto Hwy 1 to go north and the golf cart was pulling out from the west parking lot going straight. He said the vehicles then struck each other and told me what he thought the driver’s first name was, but he did not know the last. I talked to an Adam’s employee, and although he was not aware of the accident, he gave me the name of the most likely culprit. On April 5, 2014, Officer Brad Bazarow went to Adam’s Industrial Iron Works and spoke with the man and had him provide a statement.

Officer Bazarow also learned there had been a passenger. In the statement, the driver states that he was about halfway into the intersection when the other vehicle took off and hit him. Upon examining the first driver’s car, I noted damage to the driver’s side, primarily a busted headlight housing and several dents along the body near the bottom of the body panels. I also saw green paint consistent with the color of the golf cart running down the side of the car. Officer Bazarow saw the golf cart and told me that three NAPA brand batteries were damaged and that the cart had extensive body damage on the driver’s side.

April 5, 2014 - At 5:56 p.m., I, Officer Johnathan Powell, was dispatched to the DeWitt Baseball Field to take a report for a parking lot accident. Upon arrival, I spoke with a lady who told me while she was parked at the field, someone hit her vehicle. She said she was out of the vehicle at the time and does not know who hit her vehicle. I noticed damage on the front driver’s side fender and bumper. It appeared that the plastic on the bumper was cracked and that the fender was dented and the paint was scratched off.

April 3, 2014 - At approximately 8:28 p.m., I, Officer Johnathan Powell, was running stationary radar on Whitehead Drive at Purdy Pipeyard when I saw a vehicle approaching from the rear at a high rate of speed. I estimated the vehicle’s speed to be over 50 MPH and confirmed with my radar that the vehicle was traveling at 55 MPH. I then initiated my blue emergency lights and stopped the vehicle at Whitehead Dr. and Main St. I approached the vehicle, identified myself, and told the driver that I stopped him for driving 55 MPH in a 40 MPH zone. The passenger of the vehicle told me that the driver doesn’t speak English. I told him that I need identification from the driver. The driver provided me with two identification cards that were written entirely in Spanish. I attempted to run the name of the driver through ACIC in multiple ways, with no results. Because I could not identify the driver, he was placed under arrest for speeding (55/40) and no driver’s license and transported to Arkansas County Detention Center. Officer Bazarow was able to obtain identifying information

on the passenger of the vehicle. The passenger did not have a driver’s license so I inventoried the vehicle and it was towed by Roger Capps. I contacted Arkansas County Detention Center to follow up and Lt Tom Russell told me that ICE confirmed that the driver has a work visa. Because he is here legally, I released him on his own recognizance.

April 5, 2014 - At approximately 3:02 a.m., I , Officer Bobby Hopson, was patrolling southbound on S. Washington at 5th St. when I noticed a white 2003 Toyota Sequoia (AR:753 TFZ) in the parking of Hopewood Apartments with its lights on. At this time I turned westbound onto 5th St. and that’s when the vehicle pulled out to the edge of the roadway and sat as if the occupants were seeing where I was heading.

Since I had never seen the vehicle at the apartment complex in the three months I had worked at DeWitt P.D., I continued driving slowly westbound on 5th St. watching the vehicle in my driver side mirror. As I approached S. Main St. the vehicle pulled out of the apartment complex and traveled westbound on 5th St. also. The vehicle followed in behind me until we got to Paw Paws Fish Market on 5th St. at S.Madison St., were I pulled over and let it go by. Once I let the vehicle pass I got behind it and followed it to the intersection of 5th St. at S. Monroe St., where it came to a stop at the intersection stop sign and turned on its right turn signal. At this time I initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle because the driver did not give its right turn signal continuously during the last one hundred feet traveled. The driver continued on across S. Monroe St. where he came to a stop on 5th St. At this time I approached the driver side and advised the driver the reason for the stop and asked to see his drivers license, insurance, and registration. As the driver was looking for the information requested I could see what appeared to be needle track marks on the inside of his right arm. The driver then gave me a driver’s license and the front seat passenger, by request, gave me an I.D. As well. During this time, the driver became extremely agitated at me for stopping him and said that I was harassing him. I then asked him to step to the rear of his vehicle and speak with me. When he exited the vehicle he took a sheath containing a knife off of his belt and tossed it back in the vehicle. He then met me at the front of my patrol unit where I asked him if he had anything illegal on him. He said he didn’t and gave me verbal consent to search his pockets. After searching the pockets, I asked him if I could search his vehicle and he gave me verbal consent. I then had the passenger exit the vehicle and come to the rear along with a pit bull that was in the vehicle. I then began the search of the vehicle on its driver side and upon looking between the driver seat and center console I seen a clear 1ml Hypodermic syringe with a needle attached, lying on the floor between them. I removed it from the area and sat it on the driver’s side floor board and continued searching the vehicle. During the search the driver asked if the passenger could watch me search the vehicle and I allowed her to stand on the passenger side and watch. No other contraband was found during the search. After searching the vehicle I approached the driver and asked him if he had ever shot up methamphetamine and asked if I could see his arms. He showed me both of his arms and that’s when I saw needle track marks on both. He said the needle track marks were old track marks from his past days of drug use. I then went to the trunk of my patrol unit and performed a field test on the plunger part of the Hypodermic syringe because it had a wet clear liquid on it. The field test gave a positive result for methamphetamine at this time. I then placed him into custody and allowed the passenger to leave with the vehicle with no charges. Obituary James Boehn James Fredrick Boehn, 65, of Stuttgart, died Thursday, April 3, 2014.

Freddie was born August 4, 1948, in Stuttgart, to Waldo and Margaret Menard Boehn. He was a tire tech at Blue Seal Petroleum and a member of Harmony Baptist Church.

Freddie loved to fish and cook for everyone, but most of all, he loved to laugh. He was a loyal friend to all, and he loved and was dedicated to his family.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Don Boehn, and a sister, Dorothy Blundell.

Survivors are his wife, Willene Isbell Boehn; two daughters, Becky Boehn and Brianna Isbell of Stuttgart; one brother, Calvin Boehn of Wabbaseka; two sisters, Alice Hendricks of Almyra and Sandra Lawrence of Stuttgart; several brothersand sisters-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service, officiated by Bro. David Inzer, was 11 a.m. Monday and visitation was 2-4 p.m.

Sunday, both at Harmony Baptist Church.

Cremation services were provided by Turpin Funeral Home of Stuttgart.

Obituary Wanda Wright Wanda (Thomason) Wright, 65, of Dewitt, Arkansas passed away April 6, 2014. She was born on August 11, 1948 in Hot Springs, AR. Wanda retired after teaching art for 18 years.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Phillip Eugene Wright of Dewitt, AR; mother, Edna Thomason of Houston, TX; one son, Shawn Sears of Alabama; two daughters, Michele Franklin of Hot Springs, AR and Kim Damon of Benton, AR; brother; Donald Thomason of Hot Springs, AR; sister, Mary Fulton of Houston, TX; three step-sons, Phillip Ray Wright and Tracy Lynn Wright of Cushing, OK and Timothy Paul Wright of Stillwater, OK; 2 stepdaughters, Darlene Miller of Drumwright, OK and Marlene Wright of Rogers, AR; 22 grandchildren, plus many other family members and friends who loved Wanda and will miss her always.

Wanda was preceded in death by her father, Barney Thomason.

Obituary Jessie Mae Flowers Jessie Mae Purdy Adams Flowers, 89, long-time resident of DeWitt, Arkansas, passed away April 7, 2014.

She was born in Point Deluce Township in Arkansas County to Jessie and Mavie Purdy on May 10, 1924.

Of her siblings, she is survived by beloved brother Glendon “Buck” Purdy, of McGehee. Deceased are George Warren and infant sister, Vertie. Especially close were aunts, Tressie Rhodes, of Hazen, and the late Agnes Bowen. Her husband of forty years, Elvis Flowers, and former husband Elmer Adams, preceded her in death.

She is survived by two daughters, Donna Adams Parker, of Little Rock and Jan Adams-Byers and her husband Howard Byers, of West Lafayette, Indiana; granddaughter, Angela Parker and her husband David Sink of Little Rock; grandson, Wade Parker and his wife, Elaine of Lewistown, Pennsylvania; and, granddaughter, Courtney Byers, of Coconut Creek, Florida.

Others remaining to share her memory are greatgranddaughter Rachael Cunningham and greatgreat-grandson Sawyer Bradley of Bryant, and nephews and nieces Randy Purdy of DeWitt, Glenda Terry and her husband Ricky, of McGehee, Rachelle McCarty and her husband Tim of Redfield, Nancy Singleton and her husband James, of Hope, Donnie Ray Purdy and his wife Susie, of McGehee, and Ricky Purdy of DeWitt. She is remembered fondly by special friends and relatives: Brenda Byers, Judy Kay Snyder, Bernice Gray, Kathryn Trussell, Louise Mannis, Phyllis Vansandt, Holly Terry and Jason Bradley.

Jessie Mae lived an active life in DeWitt. She taught at the Williams & Trussell one-room schoolhouse at Point Deluce, worked for the J.W. Porter Lumber Co. and was a long-time employee in retail sales.

She was a beloved Sunday School teacher at Landmark Baptist Church and was a charter member of Unity Missionary Baptist Church. She traveled extensively with husband Elvis, including a car trip to Alaska and many motorcycle and Airstream journeys to camping grounds in Arkansas and surrounding states. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed selling arts and crafts that she and her friends created.

Visitation is scheduled for 6:00-8:00 on Wednesday evening, April 9, at Essex Funeral Home in DeWitt.

Services will be held at Essex Chapel at 2:30 on Thursday, April 10. Donations in Jessie Mae’s memory may be sent to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Obituary Betty Jean Ramus Betty Jean Best Whiting Ramus, 86, died April 4, 2014. She was born May 13, 1927, in DeWitt to George Dewey Best and Betty Lee Tharp Best.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands Cecil Clay Whiting and Joe Ramus; and one sister, Ruth Vansickle.

Survivors include her children, Darrel Whiting of Gillett and Sue DeVazier of Wilmington, NC; four brothers George Alvin Best of Pine Bluff, James Best of Tichnor, Buddy Best of Sherwood, Wendell Best of Kentucky; one sister Jeanelle Shelton of Tichnor; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on April 8, at Hockenberry Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home.

Obituary Artisha Rainey Artisha Terion Rainey, 18, of Pine Bluff, Arkansas, died Friday April 4, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Born December 7, 1995, in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, she was the daughter of Arthur Rainey and Monica Murry Pritchett.

Artisha was a member of the Joy Community Church in Pine Bluff were she enjoyed singing, listening and playing music. Her favorite sport was basketball. She was a gifted artist who was mentioned in the Pine Bluff Commercial last week for her art work on Victims of Violent Crimes. Artisha was a Senior at Pine Bluff High School were she was active in many organizations: Year Book Staff, F.B.L.A. Art Club, Photo Graphic Club and many more. She was employed at McDonald’s Inc. in Pine Bluff.

Artisha was preceded in death by her Grandfather, Cleveland Murry.

Artisha is survived by her parents, Arthur Rainey, of San Diego, California, and Emil and Monica Pritchett Sr., of Pine Bluff; one brother, Emil Pritchett Jr., of Pine Bluff; two sisters, Jazzlyn and Jaida Rainey, both of San Diego, California; her Grandparents, Terry Murry, Bobby Rainey and Arthur Rainey Sr. all of Gould, Arkansas; her greatgrandmother, Mary Sowers of Gould, Arkansas; five aunts: Diann Price, of Grand Prairie, Texas, Renetta (Dante) Wesley, of Cedar Hill, Texas, Arneishia Jones-Murry and Arthena Rainey, both of Gould, Arkansas; one uncle, Jeremy Rainey, of Little Rock; her best friend, Ajia Richardson and a special friend, Johnny Williams, both of Pine Bluff, as well as a host of other relatives and friends to cherish her memory.

Funeral service will be Saturday April 12, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. at the Pine High School Gymnasium with Bishop Alfonso Madden officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Gould by McKinzie Funeral Home of DeWitt. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. Saturday until Funeral time at the School in Pine Bluff.

Obituary Aren Duncan Aren “Bobby” Darnell Duncan, 54, of Dewitt, died April 4, 2014, at the St. Vincent Medical Infirmary in Little Rock. Born May 15, 1959, in Ethel, Arkansas, he was the son of Mrs. Otelia Duncan Fitzpatrick. Aren attended School in the St. Charles School System in St. Charles, Arkansas.

Aren was a hard worker and worked in many capacities such as a Truck Driver and Air Specialist for Air Gas Arkansas, Helena Chemical, of Dewitt, the Arkansas County Detention Center, First Electric Entergy Company, Star Cleaners, Briarwood Shoe Factory and the Arkansas Experiment Station.

Daren was preceded in death by four brothers; Louis Gene, Willie Lee, Earvin Wayne and George Wilbert Fitzpatrick.

Funeral service will be Saturday April 12, 2014, at 2:30 p.m. at the Greater St. John M.B.C. with Rev. Jerry Minor Officiating. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery in Ethel by McKinzie Funeral Home, of Dewitt. Visitation will be Friday April 11, 2014 at the Funeral Home from Noon until 6:00 p.m.

Stuttgart Ducks Unlimited Chapter Makes Top 100 The Top 100 is one of the most highly sought-after titles of recognition Ducks Unlimited offers to its local chapters. Each year, the list is comprised of the top 100 fundraising chapters in the United States that raise up to $100,000 through fundraising activities in their communities. Through the efforts of these volunteer committees DU is able to pursue its mission of conserving, enhancing and restoring North America’s wetlands. In 2013 the Stuttgart chapter made the Top 100 list as one of the organization’s best fundraising chapters.

“These fundraising events are the backbone of DU’s habitat conservation efforts, and the volunteers who make up these chapters are the force driving DU and helping make a difference for North American waterfowl populations,” said DU President George Dunklin. “It takes a great deal of effort to break into the Top 100, and these chapters deserve to be congratulated by every person who enjoys the outdoors.”

The Stuttgart chapter earned a spot on the Top 100 list out of the more than 2,600 DU chapters nationwide. DU’s event fundraising system has become a model for other conservation organizations around the world and has funded a significant portion of the more than 13 million acres of wetlands and associated habitat DU has conserved since 1937.

The 2013 Top 100 chapters also have the distinction of being honored during DU’s 77th National Convention in St. Louis at the end of May, with many chapter representatives in attendance.

“DU chapters across the country are showing that the future of waterfowl populations and the wetlands that filter our drinking water and protect us from flooding are important to them and to their communities,” Dunklin said. “The more money we raise, the more habitat we can conserve and the closer we are to preserving our waterfowl hunting heritage. I would like to personally thank all our Top 100 chapters for their achievement and look forward to seeing them among our distinguished chapters next year.”

Saturday Night On The Corner This celebration on April 12, 2014 at 5:30pm at Lodge Corner United Methodist Church, in the fellowship hall, is to benefit Restoration of Hope, of Stuttgart, Arkansas which have faced grants and funds being reduced, suspended and cancelled all together during these economically stressed times.

The University of Arkansas at Monticello debate team placed second in the overall sweepstakes competition at the Tennessee State University Music City Swing 2014 in Nashville last week.

The event consisted of two complete debate tournaments called “A Little Bit Country” and “A Little Bit Rock-N-Roll,” which featured individual and combined scores from both competitions. Joining the UAM debate team were teams from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, Union University, the University of South Carolina, Alderson Broaddus University, Middle Tennessee State University, and host Tennessee State.

UAM placed second in the sweepstakes competition in the “A Little Bit Country” tournament and third in the “A Little Bit Rock-N-Roll” competition to take second in the combined sweepstakes.

Individual awards in the varsity division went to Kelly Reed, a senior political science and communications major from Bella Vista, and April Wright, a sophomore political science and modern languages major from Conway. Wright was named the first place individual speaker in both tournaments while Reed was the thirdplace speaker in “A Little Bit Country” and fifth in “A Little Bit Rock-N-Roll” while earning the overall third place speaker award.

Graduate student and assistant debate coach Chris Brown of Siloam Springs won five awards in the professional division, including two first place speaker awards. Assistant coach Keith Milstead, also competing in the professional division, won two first place speaker awards and was the overall top speaker.

Other UAM students competing were Eddie Weaver, a sophomore physical education major from DeWitt, Kaitlyn Lybrand, a freshman psychology major from Sheridan, Breanna Taylor, a sophomore education major from North Little Rock, Brittany Halley, a junior communications major from Monticello, and Tanisha Smith, ajunior political science major from Hamburg.

A True Sign of Salvation

By William Wood Ps. 97:10: “You that love The Lord hate evil.” To hate wrong doing is the true sign that a person has been justified by God, which is to say he has been forgiven of his sins. What a pitiful Creature we are before we turn to our Creator and repent of our sins. Sin had blinded us, so that we could not see the beauty of our Savior. It makes us deaf so that we could not hear His tender invitations to come to Him. Sin had turned our feet into the way of death. Sin had poured poison into our very soul. It hardened our heart, and made it deceitful above all things! All were an heir of wrath, and headed for Eternal Separation from God before Divine Grace moved us to repent. We “ran with the multitude to do evil.” And such were we all before He called us, and work us in His Blood. But after He changes our hard hearts we can look back and see this evil we were caught up in, and so we hate it! And even now sin is all around us and is still our active enemy! It is ever watching to try and do us harm, and drag us down.

Therefore we Christians hate Evil of any kind, because we have learned that it brings death. If any of us do not hate Evil, then we have need to get on our knees and ask The Lord to save us. And I do not just speak to the un-churched, but also to those who sit on a church pew each week. When you have had a true experience with The Lord you can live a happy live even in the midst of your trials. And you can die a Peaceful death.

If you neglect to turn your creator, who has offered to “save your soul,” then you will find that your death couch has thorns in it, and you will dies as wretched as you have lived, and your final end is torment also.

There is only one cure for this Peace, and the world knows nothing about it! Take all they have to offer and you will still leave here a miserable wretch! And so our true sign that we have met Christ face-to-face is that we hate sin, and will not purposely fall into it again. It’s our choice, serve God and have a happy life here, then go to be with Him when we leave, or turn your back and ignore His out-stretched hand to you, and be lost forever when you die. I am going to make a Statement that should strike terror into some hearts, yet it is true!

Here is the statement: “There are people around that had rather die than serve God!” Does this not prove the fact that sin blinds our eyes? Remember friends, it’s about over for this world as we have known it. Amen.

The Choice

By Pastor Steve Ellison In Matthew 21 and 22, Jesus told a series of parables aimed primarily at identifying, defining, and condemning hypocrisy. The Parable of the Two Sons, the Parable of the Wicked Tenants (more accurately the Parable of the Landowner), and the Parable of the Wedding Feast each teach us about the terrible dangers of hypocrisy. However, our always gracious and forgiving God stood ready to forgive. In the final parable, Jesus pointed out the great danger inherent in hypocrisy, which is that the hypocrite fools himself. The hypocrite believes that he has trusted Christ when in reality he has trusted himself.

In the Parable of the Wedding Feast (Matthew 22:114), Jesus told a story about a king who gave a wedding feast for his son. The guests received four invitations but turned the invitations down for various trivial reasons. Verse three plainly states the real reason: they were unwilling to come. My own personal observation of this verifies that assessment. People generally find time, money, and resources to do that which they are willing to do, i.e. what they want to do. Because those who had been invited refused to come, the king made an interesting pronouncement. He declared that they were not worthy to attend. Obviously, there can only be one reason why they were not worthy. It was because they had refused the invitation.

There is another important aspect to this parable. It describes a man (a hypocrite) who attempted to attend the wedding feast without accepting the king’s offer for clean clothes. This type of hypocrisy is the most dangerous of all, at least to the man himself. He has fooled himself into thinking that he can do something to clean himself up, to make himself presentable to the king and the king’s son. Jesus did not tell us how the hypocrite tried to clean himself up but it does not matter. The truth is that nothing except the undeserved, free grace of God will work. Thus, there was no need for Jesus to name any of the ways that man tries make himself presentable to God. Nothing else will work, not circumcision, not baptism, not keeping the Ten Commandments, not praying to Mecca, not bathing in the Ganges, not attending church, not sending money to a television evangelist, not following the Noble EightFold Path, nor any other human effort. God’s free offer of grace found in His Son, Jesus is the only way to be made presentable to Him. The man who refused the wedding clothes provided by the king found himself muzzled, tied hand and foot, and cast into a place of utter darkness and torment.

Matthew 22:14 concludes the Parable of the Wedding Feast with an unusual declaration, “For many are called (invited) but few are chosen.” (NASU) The testimony of this parable is that God has invited every person to the Great Marriage Supper of the Lamb which will take place at the end of time. In spite of the fact that every person has received multiple invitations, many have been declared unworthy based solely on their unwillingness to accept the invitation. In addition there are some who have fooled themselves into thinking that they have accepted the invitation when in reality they have not. Because they have tried to add some effort of their own to God’s free gift of grace they have rendered themselves unacceptable. Many are called but few are chosen. There are two beings that make the choice in this matter. God has made his choice. He has invited everyone. The other choice is made by humans. Each person must choose to accept or reject God’s invitation of salvation by grace through Jesus alone. What choice have you made?

The God of New Beginnings

Painful words that describe someone who “couldn’t hack it” or “fizzled before the finish.” And, guilt and shame usually accompany one who’s waved the white flag of surrender while the battle’s still raging.

Such was certainly the case in 2012 when the Italian cruise-liner “Costa Concordia” struck a reef off the coast of Italy.

The collision tore a 160’ gash in the ship’s hull, filling it with water and trapping passengers inside as the boat listed to the starboard side.

Although less than three dozen lives were lost, what made the story especially noteworthy was the fact that the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, abandoned ship after the ship began to list. Even though his decision to deviate from the prescribed, charted course to sail closer to the shore caused the crash, he panicked and boarded one of the lifeboats.

Repeated attempts by the Italian coast guard to have him re-board his ship failed—so paralyzed by fear was he.

Thus, it’s clear that the above-cited words describe this cowardice captain. In his passengers’ greatest hour of need, he abandoned them. Jumped ship.

Left them to fend for themselves.

“Horrible!” someone says.

“Unbelievable!” cries another with contempt in his voice.

Yet, dear Reader, if the truth be known, every one of us at one time or another has been guilty of not keeping our promises. We promised to “go for the gold,” but never “delivered the goods.” Or, you promised “till death we do part,” but had your fingers crossed.

In reality, every person cited in the Bible failed miserably one time or the other. Adam and Eve took of the forbidden fruit. Noah, a “just and spiritually mature man who walked with God” (Genesis 6:9), got drunk after the flood, left himself exposed and then cursed his own son, Ham, for telling his brothers of his shameful condition (Gen. 9:20-27).

Abraham twice lied about his relationship with Sarah and had a son by his handmaiden, Hagar. Jacob stole his brother’s blessing. Moses struck the rock when God told him to just speak to it. Samson loved pagan

Where Jesus Christ Is Always Present In Word and Sacrament Pastor Chad Philipp

women and was done in by Delilah. David committed adultery with Bathsheba and had her husband killed in battle. Every one of Jesus’ closest followers abandoned Him in the Garden of Gethsemane and Peter thrice-denied that he even knew Him. Yes, the Bible is full of failures, quitters and deserters.

So is life.

And, all of our names are on that list—whether it be failing God or others.

That’s why the story of John Mark in the New Testament is such a wonderful one. A cousin to Barnabas, he accompanied Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey; but, things got pretty rough and he left them to go back home.

Several years later the Dynamic Duo prepared to head out again and Barnabas wanted to take John Mark with him. But, Paul said “Not on your life! He deserted us once; I’m not going to let him do it again!” (Acts 15:3640). This resulted in a “sharp contention” between the two spiritual giants and they went their separate ways.

For over 10 years there’s no other mention of John Mark; however, while under house arrest in Rome, Paul talked about John Mark as his “fellow laborer, who brought comfort and joy to him” (Colossians 4:10-11; Philemon 24). And, six years later while imprisoned a second time in Rome and awaiting execution, Paul asked Timothy to “get Mark and bring him with you—for he’s useful to me for ministry” (II Tim. 4:9-11).

Clearly, something had happened in John Mark and Paul’s lives. John had been mentored by Peter, who knew firsthand the guilt of desertion and restoration, and even recorded Peter’s recollection of Jesus’ Life and Ministry in the Gospel of Mark. And, Paul, evidently had a change-of-heart toward the young man, which likely stemmed for Jesus’ Love at work in his heart.

Raise Our Grade, an independent initiative championing Arkansas’s Common Core State Standards, was announced today by Arkansas Learns, the private sector alliance of parents, employers and citizens dedicated to excellent education for all students.

In their third and final year of implementation, Arkansas’s Standards have come under intense national attack by those opposed to the State-initiated effort to raise the rigor and expectations of Arkansas Standards, while empowering local school districts, charters, administrators and teachers with more local control over curriculum.

For the first time in Arkansas history, the Standards will also provide a true picture of how Arkansas students in each district and charter school compare to their peers across the country.

“Compared to each other, 83.5% of Arkansas’s Fourth Graders are considered Proficient/Advanced in Math/Literacy,” said Gary Newton, president and CEO of Arkansas Learns. “But when comparing Arkansas’s Fourth Graders to the nation’s, only 35.5% are Proficient/ Advanced. That’s a 48-point gap and consistently below the national average.”

“Forget grade inflation,” said Newton, “we have Benchmark inflation.”

Support for Arkansas’s Standards has united advocacy groups typically oppositional on matters of education policy in Arkansas.

But according to Newton, “The organizations I am privileged to serve have

never chosen our battles based on who was against us or for us. In all things, our guiding principle has remained: the best interests of Arkansas students.”

“On this issue, it is very telling that groups which typically go toe-to-toe now find themselves standing shoulder-to-shoulder in support of Higher Arkansas Standards.”

We see this when Jesus was being tempted by Lucifer in the wilderness for forty days. (Luke 4:1,14) Every time Lucifer would say to the Lord it is written, Jesus would answer back with the word, and say it is also written. This is

how he over came the evil one, is with the word.

The temptation of the Lord by Lucifer didn’t end in the wilderness, as one can see in the scriptures it was present with him until he took his last earthly breath on the cruel cross. He defeated the devil every step of the way with it is written, and that is how you and I must over come, for according to the word there will be a devil present with us all the days of our life to buffet us even right up to the time we take our last breath.

It might seem strange to some that the devil knows the scriptures. He knows them better than you, and I and most preachers. This is how he deceives people is by misinterpreting scriptures to them, usually from across a pulpit. So the only way you ,and I can over come

By Onita Watson Spirit of ’76 4-H Club learned how to make sure their home was safe when using natural gas during a program presented by Johnny Lockley, Area Manager for CenterPoint Energy at their March club meeting. Lockley pointed out that natural gas itself has no smell, but an additive is put into the gas lines to give off a distinct odor so it is easier to identify a potential gas leak.

Members were given a “scratch & sniff ” card allowing them to smell the “not so pleasant” odor of gas. Members also enjoyed an interactive game of identifying hazards when using gas around the home. Everyone was given a goodie bag containing additional information on natural gas safety to share with family members.

Destiny Brown gave an illustrated talk on genealogy, sharing her interest in learning more about her family history and giving several websites that are useful for researching your family name. Destiny also showed a poster she had made for the 4-H Poster Art con

test and interpreted her inspiration for the drawing, using the theme “Opening the Door to the Light of 4-H.” Others were encouraged to prepare a poster and turn it in by the deadline of April 18.

by Stacey Cox in the absence of the president. Minutes were read and roll call led by Secretary Cheyenne Cox, with seventeen members answering roll call by stating what they planned to do during Spring Break. Jack Wilson gave the treasurers report. Those who had attended the 4-H Banquet reported on what recognition and awards they had received at the banquet. The 4-H Rally Day scheduled for April 3 was discussed. Competitive activities to be held include Bicycle Safety, BB Shooting/Gun Safety, and Baitcasting. Members were reminded to pre-register for their choice of two activities. Refreshments were provided by Peyton Davenport and Alivia James. The next meeting will be held on April 16.

By Brenda Blagg Monday’s nationwide rush to sign up for federal health care shouldn’t have surprised anyone.

For a while at least, as the deadline to sign up arrived, the prevailing news reports were about the program, not the politics surrounding the federal Affordable Care Act. People responded, knowing the impending deadline was upon them. It was their last chance to get affordable health care or face consequences for not having insurance.

Suddenly, the questions were about what kind of coverage families could have under this “Obamacare” that had been so famously derided.

The focus returned to the original objective of providing access to affordable health care for everyone while politics took a back seat.

People were learning what health care coverage would really cost them, once they knew about subsidies to reduce the cost or about tax credits that would help come tax time. A lot of lower-income people found out they could have health care at really low cost.

In Arkansas, where incomes are commonly low, most families get some sort of break under the program.

Plus, they get regular access to health care, which had been unavailable to people with pre-existing conditions and unaffordable to others who just couldn’t carve the money out of the family budget.

There will still be objections to Obamacare and a renewed effort by its fiercest opponents to tear the program down in this election cycle.

The arguments against it, however, may prove harder to sell as families experience better health and the peace of mind that comes with affordable insurance.

Reports out of Washington indicated more than 7 million Americans were expected to have signed up for the federal health insurance by midnight Monday.

By midday on Monday, the HealthCare.gov website recorded about 1.6 million visitors, although many got an automated message about the high volumes requiring them to wait to enroll. They could enter an email address to be alerted when to try again, however, and clearly many did.

Anyone who began the process by the deadline will be able to complete it and should have coverage by May 1.

Those who didn’t sign up in time and don’t have other insurance are subject to penalties that will be collected at tax time.

Some of the 11th-hour signups came from people wanting to avoid the fines for not signing up, but more apparently came from procrastinators who put off enrolling until the last day.

No one believes the Affordable Care Act is a perfect law. Changes are certain to come as the nation lives with it.

Seven million enrollees, as significant as that sounds, isn’t anywhere close to all the uninsured Americans who could qualify. Many more should sign up and some will in future years. But these seven million signal a stronger start than expected as Obamacare is implemented.

The rollout of the program was a disaster, largely because of technical failure.

Mistakes made in setting up some state exchanges to sell the insurance plans, including the failure of many states to accept an expansion of Medicaid to help their lower income citizens, will surely be addressed.

Even the Arkansas Legislature, which put a ridiculous clamp on the state’s providing educational information about the program’s availability, might eventually come around to the reality that Arkansas people need this health insurance and they need to know how to get it.

At least Arkansas lawmakers created the “private option” to use those available Medicaid dollars to buy private insurance for Arkansans who qualify. And they’ve extended the program for a second year.

But get ready. The political side of the Obamacare story will be center stage again soon.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, said again on Monday that Republicans remain committed to repealing the law — not fixing it but getting rid of it.

That’s the story that dominated the news before and since the law’s passage in 2010. Lawsuits that led to the U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding most of the law’s provisions propelled the story as the Congress kept battling to kill the law.

The political story is certain to dominate this year’s mid-term congressional elections, including those in Arkansas, just as it will impact legislative contests and others.

Still, time may be on the side of the proponents of affordable health care as all of these newly insured Americans find out what the law really means for them and their families. Millions more should be right behind them for the next signup opportunity.

Grand Prairie Historical Society Meeting

Timothy G. Nutt, Head of Special Collections, University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

The Grand Prairie Historical Society will hold their spring quarterly meeting at Arkansas Post National Memorial Thursday, April 17, 2014. The annual potluck dinner begins at 6:00 p.m. in the visitor center, with the meeting and program following at 7 p.m. The guest speaker is Timothy G. Nutt, Head of Special Collections, University of Arkansas Library, Fayetteville. He will address the group on the Dorothy Jones Core Collection of Grand Prairie History, which is under his supervision. Mr. Nutt also serves as current president of the Arkansas Historical Association.

The Society’s semi-annual journal, the Grand Prairie Historical Bulletin, was recently awarded by AHA for the “Best Use of Graphics in a County or Local Journal� for 2013. Hunting Lodge Listed on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places The historic Lion Oil Company duck hunting lodge located on the Arkansas Game and Fish Foundation’s property at Cook’s Lake near Casscoe has been included in this year’s selection of nominated properties for the state register of historic places. Trapped In a Box

By Don Roth The forward elements of the Federal army faced off against Gen. Sterling Price’s dismounted cavalry on April 6, near current day Prescott, after being reinforced by U. S. Brig. Gen. John M. Thayer from Fort Smith. The action though intense at first, declined into long-range cannonading.

In a move to keep his outnumbered force from being flanked, Price withdrew to within eight miles of Washington on April 11. That night a thousand Choctaws and Texans under Brig. Gen. Samuel Maxey arrived, having been summoned from what is now Oklahoma to bolster the Southerners, who’s two infantry divisions had been sent to strengthen Gen. Richard Taylor’s Louisianans.

Steele at first demonstrated energetically toward Washington, then, slyly turned on the road to Camden. Futile attempts were made by Price’s cavalry to intercept the Federal general but two

weeks of constant riding and skirmishing had reduced the horses tremendously. On the evening of April 15, the Federals ended their 40 mile journey from Prescott (Prairie D’ Ane) and occupied Camden without too much opposition.

Steele had achieved his first objective though it wasn’t in the original program. His losses had been small and his army was without injury within the safety of strong fortifications constructed by the Confederates the previous winter. Price was skillfully outmaneuvered like he had been at Little Rock.

But unlike the Little Rock expedition, Steele had now fought his way into a box and the prevailing mood for the Feds was more of anxiety than elation.

They were deep in enemy territory, far from their base and they were hungry!

Despite orders to the contrary, the soldiers swarmed into smokehouses, storage buildings and into home kitchens.

Some brutish troops invited themselves to dinner at the family table. On the morning of April 16, the officers had effectively assigned patrols and the pillaging stopped in the main part of the city.

Rumors had begun to circulate that Gen. Banks met with disaster in Louisiana. There was substance behind the rumors. Banks had been defeated at Mansfield 30 miles short of Shreveport on April 8 with serious losses in wagons and artillery. The next day he was again thrashed farther down Red River at a place called Pleasant Hill. Gen.

By Darla Grantham Benevolent Fund Set An account has been set up at Planter’s and Merchant’s Bank in Gillett for the late Huey Brinton of Tichnor. Donations are being sought to help with his funeral and medical expenses.

Easter Egg Hunt Planned The City of Gillett and the Gillett Civic Group are hosting an Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 12th at Menard Heritage Park beginning at 2:00 p.m. Candy donations for the event may be taken to Gillett City Hall. Monetary donations may be taken to Planter’s and Merchant’s Bank.

Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser Planned A spaghetti dinner will be held on Sat-
