Tax Increase will help keep Lewis County safe Rita Cox Editor rita1@lewispnj.com Sheriff David Parrish is asking the public to help to continue to keep Lewis County a safe place to work and live. That can be accomplished by approving the tax proposal increase that is on the ballot for the upcoming April 3 election. The Sheriff ’s Office is seeking a one fourth of one cent increase in sales tax that will go directly to the Sheriff ’s Office and Prosecutor’s office. The amount of the tax increase is very small, for every one hundred dollars a person spends, only twenty five cents would be added to the sales tax. So for this small amount, Lewis County will have more protection, better school coverage, and the jail will be able to operate and more criminals will be off the streets. The Sheriff ’s Department needs more money to continue to operate and Parrish stated

many reasons why the tax increase is necessary. There are several things the needed funds will be used for. One of the sheriff ’s main concerns is that the Lewis County School District is not located near a law enforcement office. The response time to an emergency could be over 20 minutes. The Lewis County C-1 and Sheriff ’s Office are attempting to enter into a partnership to provide a school resource deputy. The Sheriff ’s Office already provides DARE and sponsors the Students Against Drunk Driving. A major concern has always been the distance the schools are from the Sheriff ’s Office. In the past, they have explored different ways to hire another deputy specifically for this purpose but haven’t had the funding. With the many school shooting tragic events, Parrish feels it is time to get a deputy at the school full time. Lewis County C-1 school board, administration, faculty

and staff have approved funding to partner with the county to provide this deputy. Parrish said Canton R-V district is fortunate to have the police department so the response time is not the same as the C-1 District. Canton R-V will soon have the Canton Police Department on site with an office in the Canton building. The Sheriff ’s Department will continue to provide support to both districts. Sheriff Parrish said he would like to help the Canton Schools upgrade the current video surveillance system to provide added security at the school. A deputy would be hired and placed at the Highland campus. The deputy would also take care of matters that happen in the district such as child neglect, assaults, threats, etc., while also being involved in the DARE program and other projects with the school. When school is not in session, the deputy would have normal duties within the department. The jail is also a big concern.

The state requires the Sheriff ’s Office to maintain and keep prisoners. If the county does not have a jail the prisoners must be transported to another facility outside the county, at a cost to Lewis County. 99 percent of Lewis County inmates are incarcerated on state charges. If someone is arrested by a park ranger, trooper or city officer, the Sheriff ’s Office must pay for all costs associated with keeping the inmate. This includes food, clothing, medical care and transportation. The Sheriff ’s Office is responsible for picking up prisoners from all over the state and nation regardless as to who the original arresting agency was. They also transport prisoners to and from prison, which takes a deputy out of the area. Jail staffing has been a major issue. Having a jail in a county is a deterrent to crime. There have been 45 jailers in the past ten years to cover four full time positions and two part time positions. For the last three
