Sunday, March 1, 2015, the First Christian Church of DeWitt celebrated its 100th year anniversary with worship and celebration. The morning kick-off began with meet and greet over coffee and donuts. All visitors were able to view the multiple storyboards and tables full of past photos and newspaper clippings. Friends and family came as far from Wisconsin for the event. Over 125 were in attendance which included several past ministers of the congregation. Of those ministers who participated in the following main service were Bob James of Murfreesboro, Arkansas, Max Goins of Van Buren, Arkansas, and Gary Morning of Brownstown, Indiana. Tom Bowlby, who is

the current minister from the First Christian Church of Dumas, Arkansas and a Timothy of the Christian Church of DeWitt, delivered the morning message. Barry Cooper of Almyra, Arkansas brought special music in song. Directly after the anniversary service all friends and family took part in a time of fellowship and home-cooked meal. Near the end of the meal several individuals shared memories of the past 100 years. Folks gathered to visit and many stayed as long as two hours after the events were completed. The ladies of the church have organized a 100th anniversary cookbook which is available for $15 each. In this cookbook are the names of those who have submitted

recipes over the past 100 years. Current minister, Brother Nathan Martin shares these words in response to this anniversary event, “This celebration recognized the past service of individuals who believed in something greater than themselves. They believed in a love for God, family, friends, and community. Sharing the message about a Savior can be difficult at times especially in a world at the brink of an unknown future for our children. This anniversary gathering was to remind us of a legacy that has been passed down to us from the very beginning; Love God and love people.”

ARC/PLC ELECTION DEADLINE

The final day for farm owners and producers to choose ARC or PLC coverage is March 31, 2015. A program choice of ARC or PLC coverage must be made by March 31, or there will be no 2014 payments for the farm and the farm will default to PLC coverage through the 2018 crop year. The online tools, available at http:// www.fsa.usda.gov, allow producers to explore projections on how ARC or PLC coverage will affect their operation under possible future scenarios. To learn more, farmers can contact their local Farm Service Agency county office.

FAITH & RELIGION

Love Without Hypocrisy By Pastor Steve Ellison Paul spent the first eleven chapters explaining the greatness of Christ in relation to the totality of our salvation. Christ’s great work on the cross justified us. Christ living in us brings about our sanctification. We will one day be glorified in and by Christ.  Romans 12 begins with the word “thereforeâ€? telling us that because of the greatness of the person and work of Christ in saving us, we ought to present ourselves as a living sacrifice to God by being ever increasingly conformed to the image of Christ. Romans 12:913 is a paragraph that describes the love Christians ought to have for one another, “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;  not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord;  rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer,  contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.â€? (NASU) It seems to me that the main point of this paragraph is “love without hypocrisyâ€? and the rest of the paragraph

is a practical explanation of what that looks like.  If we fail to “abhor what is evil and cling to what is goodâ€?, we have not loved or we have loved with hypocrisy. We do not get to decide what is evil and what is good. God alone has that prerogative. If we fail to hate evil (that which God hates), then we do not truly love. Many Christians are familiar with the biblical statement that “the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lordâ€?. However, many are not familiar with Proverbs 8:13, “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil.â€? (NASU) So, hating evil can be legitimately called the beginning of wisdom. Psalm 97:10 states, “Hate evil, you who love the Lord.â€? (NASU) Psalm 119:104, 128, and 163 all indicate that the person who loves God’s law will hate every false way. Hebrews 1:9 says that Jesus hates lawlessness. In Revelation 2:6 Jesus praises the church at Ephesus because they hate the same thing that He does. First Peter 3:10-11 quotes from Psalm 34, “The one who desires life, to love and see good days, must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from speaking deceit.

A Thought By Michael P. Daniel “Forever, O Lord, Your word is settled in Heaven. Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides.â€? Psalm 119:89-90 NKJV I saw a thing making its rounds on Facebook recently which stated, “The Bible does not need to be rewritten; it needs to be reread.â€? What comes immediately to mind are those editors who would strive for gender-neutral and more fully-inclusive language – and

our own lives in accordance with what is written for our well-being. We have become a little too independent for our own good. The damage is not strictly what we are doing to ourselves in our pride or willful ignorance; it is the lasting damage we do to our children, our grandchildren, and our unbelieving neighbors when they hear us claim the Christian faith but watch us distort (or edit) what is actually written and “settled in Heavenâ€?.

yet many of these would still, strictly from memory and with no real thought, lift up “Our Father who art in Heaven ‌â€? Some of these same self-declared editors would quote Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Wesley, St. Augustine, and many others verbatim but will also insist upon editing what is written in the Scriptures so as to make what is written in and for the ages somehow “less offensiveâ€?. Yet these editors are not the only ones who distort what is written. The Christians who claim to love Jesus but are willfully ignorant of what is written in the Gospels about our Lord do a grave disservice to what is written for us to know, and betray what has been handed down through the ages for the good of the Church – the whole body of believers. These are the ones who do not “seekâ€? at all, choosing instead to make it up according to what makes sense to them in any given circumstances. The stink of this, however, is that most of us are guilty to one degree or another of trying to edit the Scriptures to fit our own lives rather than to adjust

Jesus says, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scattersâ€? (Luke 11:23). Jesus, speaking as the “Word which became flesh and dwelt among usâ€? is teaching in accordance to the same Word which “is settled in Heavenâ€?. Yet we dare to suggest we can somehow make the Eternal Word more relevant today by denying 2000 years of sound doctrine. It is little wonder we watch the TV news with horror and disgust while lamenting a “lost generationâ€?!  Jesus assures His followers that if we will “seek, we shall findâ€?. If we do not bother to seek, however, we will find nothing. Without Christ we already have nothing – there is no need to look for more of “nothingâ€? in a world that does not know The Word. Let us diligently search together for that which “is settled in Heavenâ€? and will “endure to all generationsâ€?. The Bible has not become outdated or irrelevant to our time and generation; we’ve just become a little too big for our spiritual britches! Blessings, Michael

11 He must turn away from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous, and his ears attend to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.â€? (NASU) Certainly there is evil outside of ourselves that we are called to oppose. And if we do not oppose evil, then we are not loving without hypocrisy. Just as certainly, there is evil within our own selves that we must hate as well.  First Peter 3:10 states very plainly that the one who desires to love must keep his tongue from evil and deceit. Verse 11 goes on to say that the one who desires to love must turn away from evil and do good. Surely that can mean that we should not do the evil that others are doing and rather do good. It also can mean that we ought to turn from the evil that was in our own heart to do and rather do good.  If you need any additional motivation, verse 12 declares that God listens to the one who is righteous but the face of the Lord is against the one who does evil. pastorsteve8800@gmail.com

The Blood Tag By William Wood

We have stated before how our Lord Jesus taught in Parables. He told stories about things in the natural world that was meant to point out Spiritual truths. Born again Christians understand the Scriptures better after hearing His Parables. I would like to tell such a story that might help some to understand that God given Salvation is not based on your membership in any given church, or denomination. Having lived out West for 18 years I was aware of a grazing program that the State of New Mexico had, that helped the ranchers who raised cattle. Large areas of state owned land was fenced and set aside, to be used by ranchers to graze their herds on. Some of these areas consisted of thousands of acres. But there was only one rule that had to be strictly abided by. Every animal that was admitted had to have a blood tag in the ear proving in its ear, proving that it was a through bred Herford. These areas had gates through which the cattle had to enter, and at each gate there was a Ranger sitting on his horse, checking every cow that went in. All the animals that came had a brand on its hip. This had been applied with a red hot branding iron that burned a Bar X (- X) or whatever brand the Rancher had chosen to mark his cattle! But the Ranger paid no attention to the brand on the cow’s hip, rather he checked each one to see if it had a blood tag in its ear; this was proof that it was a Herford. If it were not there the animal was turned aside, and not allowed. What a perfect type this is of what is to happen soon at the Gate that guards the kingdom of Heaven. There will be a guardian angel there, and he will be checking to see who has the Blood of Christ over the doorpost of his heart! He will not be watching for brand names, Methodist, Baptist, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Church of Christ, Pentecostals, or any other brand will not be noticed. But if the Blood tag is over the heart it will be said to those, “Enter into the joys of The Lord, well done thou good and faithful servant. But how sad and pitiful it will be for those who trusted in church membership, and that’s all they had. The most important question on earth, that needs to be asked, and then answered, is how do I get that Blood tag on the doorpost of my heart? In Acts 2:37-39 Peter gives the answer to our question! “Repent, and be baptized every one of you in The Name of Jesus Christ - - - - - - - - and you shall receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost. There is only one way, and this is it! You must be born again! There are no white black birds, no drink sober man, and no half-way Christians! We are either in or out of God’s Kingdom, and “Whosoever will, let him come. Rev. 22:17 Amen

DeWitt Chamber of Commerce DeWitt School Meets Menu

By Terrye Seamon

The DeWitt Chamber of Commerce met for their monthly meeting March 19 at the PCCUA DeWitt campus. The luncheon was sponsored by Patillo Center School. Carolyn Turner, vice chancellor of the PCCUA DeWitt campus briefed everyone on several upcoming events hosted by the DeWitt campus this spring. Concerning finances, Turner mentioned that the numbers are not promising due to low spring enrollment numbers and the increase in insurance for employees. Turner said, “We are looking at [being down] $500,000, which is not good.” Chamber President and DeWitt City Hospital and Nursing Home Administrator Darren Caldwell then updated chamber members on recent improvements at the hospital such as the installation of a new call light system and new Xray equipment. The call light system at the hospital, Caldwell said, should be finished this week and then installation will begin at the nursing home and should take approximately three weeks to finish. “As of Monday we have replaced our X-ray equipment that we have had for about 10 years,” Caldwell said. The unit is completely digital, and once it takes an X-ray, the picture is available for the physician to view almost immediately. Caldwell explained that the hospital was able to fund the new equipment due to a grant that covered

Sponsored by about a third of the cost. “We are really excited about the upgrades we have been able to make,” Caldwell told those in attendance. Caldwell then described some efforts and improvements made recently by the hospital auxiliary. Through fundraising efforts, the auxiliary funded a new stained glass shadow box in the hospital chapel, which has been relocated to Room 103. Caldwell said the auxiliary also has plans to implement a Junior Auxiliary program. Members of the Junior Auxiliary will help with activities at the nursing home. Since colleges are looking for wellrounded students in addition to GPA’s, Caldwell said this program will give youth volunteers community experience they can include on college applications. Any youth interested in volunteering can contact Caldwell or any member of the auxiliary. Caldwell announced that the 7th annual blood drive at the hospital is scheduled for April 21. Every year the hospital sets a goal of collecting 100 units of blood, and they have exceeded this goal every year but one since the drive started. Last year Caldwell said that not only did they meet and exceed their 100 unit goal, but they set an all-time record of collecting 129 units. “Even by Red Cross’s standards, for our size community, they cannot believe we generate as many units at these drives that we

do,” Caldwell said. Briefing chamber members on the new community visioning plan, Mayor Ralph Relyea informed everyone of the recent action plans developed concerning the DeWitt City Park and tourism. “We are trying to get the park back up in top-notch shape,” the mayor said. He also said that there are plans in the works for the DeWitt to host a fall fest in the fall of 2015. Tami Hornbeck, acting director of DeWitt Pride, reported to the chamber that the group is looking at restructuring some of its positions and the goals of the organization as well as aligning some of their projects with the new community visioning plan. She also mentioned plans of a joint effort between the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce, the City of DeWitt and DeWitt Pride to possibly hire someone who would serve as DeWitt’s tourism and visitor center director as well as maintain the city’s website and communication media. “It’s all about DeWitt,” Hornbeck said. DeWitt Chamber Treasurer Gena Jennings reported that the balance in the general fund is $1,548.69. Other funds and balances include Christmas on the Square Checking ($3,008.62), Christmas on the Square Lights ($325.42), Christmas on the Square Savings ($10,859.41) and the Gazebo Fund Savings (5,169.88).

DMS Student Council officers Emma Bullock, Kinsey Everett, Ashtyn Beck and Harley Bishop and the new telescope

Socrates said, “Man must rise above the Earth – to the top of the atmosphere and beyond – for only thus will he fully understand the world in which he lives.” And now DeWitt Middle School students have one more resource in which to do exactly that. The DeWitt PTA and DeWitt Middle School Student Council recently purchased a new telescope for the DeWitt Middle School science department. DeWitt Middle School Student Council Co-Sponsor Clay Dollar said, “The new telescope will allow students to view many new objects from the

night sky that could not be viewed with the previous equipment.” He said it will also allow students who cannot attend nighttime activities hosted at the school to view the images the next day. The telescope will be able to interface with a laptop to locate and track images as well as digitally record and photograph the objects viewed. Dollar said the telescope will also be available for other schools in the DeWitt School District to use as well. Although it will be housed at DeWitt Middle School, DeWitt Elementary and DeWitt High School will have access to it.

“We purchased this telescope with the intent of sharing it throughout our entire district,” Dollar said. Eighth-grade science teacher Jerome Wilson is currently in the process of familiarizing himself with the new telescope and its software. “I hope to have the telescope up and running over spring break,” Wilson said. Not only does DMS have something that the entire district can be proud of, but the excitement of the teachers and students alike can hardly be contained. Eighth-grader Cheyenne Cox said, “It will be hands on, and we can learn better from it because we will be able to see it in real life instead of just in books.” Seventh-grade science teacher Daniel White said, “With the movement of the curriculum toward the Common Core, the use of the telescope will complement the learning that is taking place.” This spring DMS plans to host a nighttime viewing of the sky. Wilson said that he and Dollar are looking at dates in April and May for a nighttime observation involving all DMS students. “Watch the school website and the DeWitt Era-Enterprise for information about the event,” Dollar said. “DMS would like to say thank you to the DeWitt PTA for the willingness to partner with the DMS Student Council to make this a reality. The teachers and administration are very proud of the student council members for spending their hard-earned money on a project that will benefit their education and the education of many future generations,” Dollar said.

Visioning Plan Action Group Meets By Terrye Seamon The Visioning Plan Action Group met March 16 at the PCCUA DeWitt campus. The purpose of the group is to foster and promote the development, economical growth and beautification of DeWitt. Concerning the city’s potential for growth and development, Mayor Ralph Relyea said, “We’ve got some of the best kept secrets here. Although only seven people were in attendance, the group forged ahead and developed two subcommittees and two action plans concerning tourism and park improvement and development. The original meeting, which was planned for February 23, was rescheduled due to inclement weather and may have been the reason for the low attendance. Since lodging is an integral part of tourism, a hospitality subcommittee was formed with Karen and Dean Watts as chairmen. The subcommittee will start developing a specific plan for how the lodging aspect of the project will operate. The committee will also start contacting various lodges around the county to determine interest. Possible employment opportunities such as cleaning and catering services for individuals interested in providing these

services were also discussed. “Demand may cause it to develop...This visioning plan may be a “Kickoff for a lot of things, said the mayor. The Parks Improvement and Development subcommittee will work side-byside with DeWitt’s newly formed park commission under the leadership of Robert Criswell and Mayor Ralph Relyea. The group decided that the first step the subcommittee will need to focus on is possible park improvements, such as updating playground equipment and renovating the walking trail, as well as fundraising ideas for the city’s park. The next step will be for the members of the two subcommittees to meet individually and start initiating their action plans. Members of both committees will then come back together at a later date to brief the entire Visioning Plan Action Group on the progress made in each area. Anyone interested in becoming a part of the visioning groups or volunteering can contact either Mayor Ralph Relyea at dewittmayor@centurytel.net or Tami Hornbeck at tami.hornbeck@ communitiesU.org or Karen Watts at kleawatts@hotmail.com for more information.

NOTICE OF PUBLIC SALE Notice is hereby given that in accordance with Act 626 of 1983, as amended, the Commissioner of State Lands will hold a public auction to dispose of the tax delinquent lands which are listed below, all located in Arkansas County, Arkansas. The auction will be held at the Arkansas County Courthouse in Stuttgart, Arkansas, at 2:00 p.m. on April 28, 2015. Bidder registration will commence at 1:30 p.m. The land will be sold to the highest bidder, provided that such bid is equal to at least the total amount of taxes, penalty, interest, and costs due as certified to the Commissioner of State Lands. The full purchase price must be paid immediately following the sale, with the first $100.00 of each parcel paid in cash, cashier’s check or money order. The balance may be paid by personal or corporate check. The owner of record may redeem the property during a 10 business day period following the date of the sale. If the property is not redeemed during that 10 day period, the purchaser will receive a Limited Warranty Deed for the property from the Commissioner of State Lands. The title conveyed by the Commissioner of State Lands is not clear title nor a fully warranted title. The Commissioner of State Lands does not guarantee or warrant clear or merchantable title to the property sold. The original owner, assigns, or heirs have a ninety (90) day period during which the validity of the sale may be contested in court. The Commissioner of State Lands strongly suggests that potential bidders perform their own research on the property listed below to determine its suitability for their uses, the status of the title, the existence of liens, and other tax assessments that may be due, but not collected by the Commissioner of State Lands. The sale of the land does not extinguish any lien for delinquent improvement district assessments or relieve the purchaser of liability for delinquent improvement district assessments. Copies of the complete rules and regulations for the sale of tax delinquent lands are available from the Commissioner of State Lands Office, 500 Woodlane Street, Suite 109, Little Rock, Arkansas 72201 or www.cosl.org. DeWitt School Board Gillett EHC Meets in Meeting March

By Dawn Teer The DeWitt School Board met Tuesday, March 10, at the Administrative offices in DeWitt. A meeting with the representatives from Baldwin Shell, who will be building the new middle school, preceded the regular meeting. They presented blueprints for review, as well as important dates for the project. On April 19, they will be start advertising for bids. On or about April 29 they will have a pre-bid site walk-thru and local subcontractor meeting. May 12 they will accept bids, May 19 will have them review the GMP pricing with the architect and the superintendent, and on May 21 Baldwin Schell will be released to proceed with construction. They hope to have a groundbreaking ceremony soon after this. Barring no problems, they are scheduled to begin construction June 15. Tony Curtis of Baldwin Shell also made a strong point to let everyone present know that Baldwin Shell will keep lines of communication open throughout the process. They plan to send a list of everyone the have invited to make bids on the project, as well as who has accepted. At the conclusion of this part of the meeting, the board began its’ regular board meeting. The February 17 meeting minutes were approved, as well as the financial report, with some clarification regarding the secondary center deficit. Dr. Lynne Dardenne, superintendent, gave the administrative reports next beginning with the professional liability insurance renewal. Mr. Raider, facilities manager said they have a policy for middle school that pays them a set amount should it be damaged. She told the board they had reevaluated their coverage and although the premiums had, went up, the coverage was much better now. The Professional Development Year was discussed next, where Dardenne informed them the DeWitt PDY will run June 1, 2015 thru May 31, 2016. The calendar for the 2015-2016 school year was presented with some discussion by Michelle Black who was representing teachers. Black told the board the teachers would like to request that the first Parent-Teacher conference be moved from September to October so that they could get to know their students a little better before the first conference. There was only one difference in the calendar options 1 & 2 and that was to have the ParentTeacher conference either before or after the Professional Development day by teachers. The teachers voted to have it the day after the Parent-Teacher conference. Next on the agenda was discussion about Act 286, which allows schools to make up snow days in one-hour increments. There was quite a bit of discussion on whether this would be a

workable choice for the DeWitt school district. The board wanted some input from teachers and staff so they voted to table this until they could get feedback from them. They will be sending a survey on survey monkey to teachers for that feedback. The 2014 audit has been completed for this phase and they have sent info to the next phase and are hoping to be receiving feedback on the audit by April. They had a request to use the High School cafeteria for prom on April 11. There was also a request by the Farmer and Businessmen’s organization to use the Gillett cafeteria for their annual family fish fry. Both requests were approved. There was an in-district request from a kindergarten students’ family to move from DeWitt elementary to Gillett elementary. After some discussion, they are going to wait until after kindergarten registration, so they will know how many spaces are available. They will revisit this issue by June 1 for a decision. In the superintendent’s report, Dr. Dardenne said the robotics group was unable to compete in the robotics competition due to the bad weather. They are aiming to compete next year. She is hoping to have the students demonstrate their robot at an upcoming meeting. In an update on the Parent night held recently at DeWitt High School, Mr. Weaver, high school principal said it had went quite well and he thanked Carole Anderson, Michelle Black, Doug Corley, Stephanie Bradley, and Ashley Smith for their contribution and help in making it a success. The turnout was very good and they hope to have another parent night soon for the eighth graders who will be coming to high school. They were able to use the Chrome books and assist parents and students in registering for classes. Weaver felt this hands on by the parents was a big asset and hoped it would help parents and students in the future. Dr. Dardenne went on to say that, Kindergarten registration will be held on March 18, the hours at DeWitt elementary will be 10-6, and at Gillett elementary it will be 12-4. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to registration. They then discussed the PARCC testing which began that day. According to Mrs. Adams, the middle and high school went quickly. It took 30 minutes to get 93 students logged on. They had very few problems. Dr. Dardenne expressed thanks to the teachers and staff for their hard work making this a success. At this point, the board went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. The DeWitt school board meets the 2nd Tuesday of every month at 7:00 pm.

The Gillett Extension Homemakers Club held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, March 17, at The Paddy in Gillett with Rose Ella Smith as hostess and six people present. Hackney, club president, called the meeting to order. Smith read an inspirational message based on Leviticus 19:18 reminding us to “love thy neighbor as thyself ” and to love ourselves as well. Debbie Daniels read the thought for the month: “Too many people spend their lives looking in the rear view mirror, regretting what could have been. I say . . . STOP & LOOK around at all that you have. Then continue on your journey by looking only ahead to all the wonderful possibilities that are in front of you,” by Beth Paul. Daniels, Family Resource Management Leader, presented the program on Organic vs. Natural Foods: What’s the Difference? Everyone enjoyed learning about organic, natural, whole, and health foods as well as learning what the food labels actually mean. Daniels explained the difference in minimally processed and natural foods. Dorothy Connelly, secretary, called roll with the question: If you try, can you

understand another person’s panic? After some discussion, those present felt they could understand another’s panic and some had even seen people have panic attacks. The minutes and the treasurer’s report were accepted. Hackney and Smith made cakes for the 4-H Banquet on March 9, and Hackney and Daniels helped serve. The Spring Council meeting on April 22 at PCC DeWitt was also discussed. The group decided the recipe for Strawberry Brownies looked interesting but thought the name was a bit confusing. How can something strawberry be a brownie? As an eye opener, Connelly brought a beautiful Christmas scene wall hanging made of yo-yos given to her son and daughter-in-law by their preacher’s wife. Connelly won the door prize. Thelma Connelly and a guest, Mickie Tisdale, were also present. Everyone enjoyed the delicious refreshments furnished by Smith. The meeting closed with the Homemaker’s Prayer. The April meeting will be on Tuesday, April 21, at The Paddy in Gillett at 2 p.m.. with Daniels as hostess.

Arkansas 529 College Savings Plan By Terrye Seamon “People are not aware that this [program] exists, and we are hoping to work on that and increase awareness through time,” Beth Anne Rankin said concerning the GIFT Arkansas 529 College Savings Program. Rankin, director of the program, explained that GIFT 529 allows people to contribute money to a tax-free interest account to help fund the future education of a designated beneficiary. “We believe people will want to set these up for their children and their grandchildren,” Rankin said. GIFT Arkansas 529, which stands for Great Investment for Tomorrow, can be used for two or four-year colleges as well as graduate, vocational and trade schools. The beneficiary does not have to be a blood relative Rankin said. The recipient can be a family member, close friend or even the account owner himself. “You can also set up an account for yourself and let those earnings be generating more power that is tax free and then five years from now when you are ready to go back to school, hopefully, that account is worth more than what it was today,” Rankin said. The savings account, which is tax deductible on Arkansas income tax up to $5000 for an individual and $10,000 for a couple, can be used for tuition, room and board, fees and possibly computers. Rankin said that a bill proposing that computers be made an eligible expense has passed the House of Repre-

sentatives and now awaits the Senate’s decision. Rankin said that currently there is an open enrollment period until July 31, 2015, for residents in all 75 counties in Arkansas who are interested in setting up a college savings account. Participants who register will have a chance to win $529 toward an education account. One entry is allowed per person, and participants and account owners must be 18 years old to enter. One winner from each of the 75 counties will be selected in a drawing Monday, August 10. Rankin explained that if the winner selected already has a gift Arkansas 529 account, the $529 will be wired into the account. If the winner does not have an account already set up, the minimum required $25 contribution fee will be waived, an account will be set up and the $529 winnings will be deposited in it. Paper copies of the entry form are available at the Arkansas County Treasurer’s Office or online at www.Arkansas529. org. Participants can either print off an entry form or register online. Concerning the program, Arkansas County Treasurer Charles Albert Horton said, “It sounds like a no-lose situation. If you’ve got anybody who has a need for an education, it really sounds like a good tool.” For more information on the GIFT Arkansas 529 College Investment Plan or an entry form, visit www.Arkansas529. org.

Dragonettes Defeat Hamburg By Dawn Teer The rain finally let up enough to have a couple of dragonette softball games last week. They started out Monday against Crossett falling 8-4. The game was tied

up 4-4 in the 5th inning, but Crossett came back in the 6th with 4 runs. Tuesday’s game against Hamburg was a little more exciting. DeWitt scored one in the 1st and 2nd innings. Neither team

scored in the 3rd and in the 4th. Hamburg brought in 4 runs and held DeWitt to only 3. The 5th brought 1 run for Hamburg and 2 for DeWitt. Hamburg started the 6th with 2 more runs, but DeWitt came right back with their

own. The end of the game brought a score of 11-9 with DeWitt winning. Several girls had good hits including Libby Cox, Ashley Gill, Drew Dillion and Kyla Patterson. Congratulations to the Dragonettes on the win!
