AMERICAN LEGION BIRTHDAY SUPPER

The annual American Legion Birthday supper, hosted by the Auxiliary, will be held March 6, 2014, at 6:30 p.m, at Camp Doughboy. The Legion will be 95 this year. We urge all our members and their families to come out and help us celebrate. The supper will be potluck, with the Legion furnishing the meat and ice. The Auxiliary will have the cake.

Last Tuesday, at around 3:30 a.m. Dana’s House was struck by lightning. The attic and crawlspace on the east side of the building caught fire, which spread from end-to-end of the building. The fire was contained but caused massive water damage that leaked through the ductwork into the thrift store, kitchen area and recreation room. Though no children were hurt, computers, kitchen equipment

and everything in the thrift store, as well as the computer board for the van were all damaged.

Particularly distressing is the complete destruction of all items in the thrift store, which brings in approximately $15,000 annually that goes towards taking the children out to eat, go to movies and other activities.

“All that is gone,” Jennifer Poston, administrator said.

“Everything in the store is

ruined.”

The Baptist church has offered their kitchen while repairs are being made.

Structurally, the ends are shored-up and is sound.

However, monetary donations are much needed. “We really need donations because we don’t want to direct all of our money toward repairs and take away from what the kids get,” Poston said. “And we just don’t have room for items. We have no

place to put them.”

Donations can be made on site, mailed to Dana’s House or through Paypal at their website: danashouse. org. Also, volunteers will be needed as the progression of repairs unfolds, so please plan on lending a helping hand to a great organization and the wonderful kids for whom it serves.

LOCAL NEWS EWITT POLICE REPORT February 28, 2014 - At approximately 4:35 PM, I, Officer Johnathan Powell, was watching traffic at 2nd and Main St when I noticed a vehicle with a blue piece of plastic covering the front driver’s side window. I activated my emergency lights and stopped the vehicle at the intersection of May and 1st St, approached the vehicle, and identified myself. I informed the driver that it was not legal to drive with his window obstructed.

I asked for his license, registration, and proof of insurance. He provided me with his license and registration, but said that he did not have his proof of insurance in the vehicle. Upon running the license, I learned it is suspended due to child support nonpayment. He was placed under arrest for driving on a suspended driver’s license and no proof of insurance.

March 1, 2014 - Officer dispatched to 112 East Maxwell Street. The caller advised that her nephew, was threatening to burn down her house. Arkansas County Sheriff Auxiliary Deputy Toby Smith (Unit 23), hearing the radio traffic and aware of the mental and combative nature of the nephew, advised that he was en route to the location to assist. Both officers arrived at the same time. While speaking with the suspect he advised that he did threaten to burn down his aunt’s house. He was taken into custody with no physical resistance, transported to the Arkansas County Detention Center and charged with Terroristic threatening in the second degree.

February 28, 2014 – At approx. 10:18 p.m. , I , Officer Bobby Hopson , was sitting in the parking lot of Marty Mart when I witnessed a white Chevrolet Malibu (AR:322 RMH) traveling north bound on Whitehead Dr. @ 2nd St. without any headlights on. At this time I activated my patrol unit’s emergency blue lights and got the vehicle pulled over on E. Cross St.@ Whitehead Dr. I then approached the vehicle on it’s driver side, advised the driver the reason for the stop, and asked to see his drivers license, insurance, and registration. At this time the driver said he did not have a driver’s license and gave his name and date of birth. I then had dispatch to check to see if he ever had a driver’s license and for warrants. Dispatch advised me that his driver’s license were suspended at this time. I then placed him into custody and after the vehicle’s owner arrived to pick it up I transported him to the Arkansas County Detention Center to be booked on the charge of Driving with a cancelled driver’s license.

February 25, 2014 - I was dispatched to the Dewitt High School Parking Lot for an accident. Upon arrival, I met with a someone who stated that another had hit her car since she arrived at school. I called

Principle Marty Weaver and told him of the situation and would he find the kid in parking spot #182. Mr. Weaver said give him a minute. In a few minutes a white male came across the lot and to my car and was asked if he was driving this truck this morning and he said yes. I asked if he was going to tell the other driver that he hit her vehicle or tell anyone about it. He said that he was going to tell her eighth period. I took all information from the two parties and told them that they needed to contact their insurance companies of the accident.

March 1, 2014 - At approximately 2:20 PM, I, Officer Brad Bazarow was dispatched to the Kroger parking lot to take a report of a hit and run accident.

Upon arrival, I spoke with the victim who said that while she was shopping a car backed into her and drove off. A Kroger employee stated that the car was an older white Buick, and that when the car backed into her, the driver got out and unstuck the cars, and then drove off.

February 27, 2014 - I was dispatched to the North Parking lot of Phillips Community College for an accident. Upon arrival I spoke with one driver. He said that he was involved in the accident and that he had hit a parked vehicle. He said that he was pulling a trailer full of plants up to the college, and when they had unloaded all the plants and was leaving the parking lot he turned to sharp and the trailer hit the parked vehicle. The trailer left a big red scuff and dented in the plastic bumper on the driver’s side of the trailblazer.

I went in the college and talked to the vehicle owner and got her insurance information for the report. The trailer that actually hit the parked SUV belongs to the college. I told both parties to contact their insurance companies and tell them of accident.

DMS Hears “Keys to Safety” presentation from the Arkansas Attorney General’s Office

by Linda Gunnell Carol Robinson spoke to the DMS student body recently about internet safety and teens. Ms. Robinson provided valuable safety tips for anyone using the internet. She related two stories of AR teens that lost their lives after interacting with people they met online.

Tips she provided included: 1. Don’t give personal information online.

2. Anything you share online becomes public!

3. Don’t send pictures to anyone you don’t know.

4. Never assume the person you are talking to is really who they say they are.

5. Never agress to a face-to-face meeting with someone you’ve met online.

6. Don’t respond to or send mean or threatening messages.

7. If someone makes you feel uncomfortable or sends you anything appropriate TELL SOMEONE!!!

LOCAL NEWS Whitmore Fertilizer Hosts Customer Obituary Appreciation Day

Whitmore Fertilizer held their Annual Customer Appreciation Day on Thursday, February 27 at the Arkansas County Fairgrounds.

Participants enjoyed a feast of steak with all of the trimmings.

Mandy Lee Turner Jimenez, 66, of DeWitt died February 26, 2014. She was born on January 13, 1948, in Reydell, AR, to Tom Junior Turner and Liza Elmina Goodnight Turner. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, James Jimenez.

Survivors include her children, Jennifer Comancho of New Mexico, David Jimenez of Louisiana, and Freddie Jimenez of California; five brothers Lonnie Turner (Pat Hopper) of DeWitt, Oscar Turner (Martha), Jimmy Turner (Amanda), Walter Turner (Nancy), and Virgil Turner (Diane); one sister Debbie May; five grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a memorial service at a later date.

Obituary Phyllis Ann Adams Price Phyllis Ann Adams Price, 62, of Almyra, died February 26, 2014. She was born November 23, 1951, in DeWitt to Robert and Estelle Watson Adams. She worked at Arkansas County Co-op and was a member of Faith Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Roberta Adams Williams.

Phyllis is survived by her husband, Ronny; her son, Dean, and his wife, Katie Jo; two grandchildren, Whitney and Caleb, all of Almyra; and two sisters, Lou Cree Schallhorn and Rosa Lee Myers, both of DeWitt.

Visitation was 2-3 p.m. Saturday, March 1, at Faith Baptist Church with funeral services following at 3:00. Burial was in Almyra Cemetery by Essex Funeral Home.

The family of Adonnis Shields would like to express a sincere thank you to everyone for the calls, cards, visits, food, and prayers during the loss of our mother, daughter, and sister. We especially want to thank Bro. Eddie Best for the service, Betty Fuhrman for the music, and the First Baptist Church ladies for dinner. UAM and Arkansas Americorps to Offer Scholarships for Third Year Applications for the UAM-Arkansas Americorps Scholarship will be available beginning March 5 at the Office of Admissions at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and at the Americorps office at the Southeast Educational Service Cooperative in Monticello.

UAM, in cooperation with Arkansas Americorps, will offer five $1,000 scholarships, renewable each semester, beginning with the fall 2014 semester. The deadline to submit a scholarship application is April 1.

UAM and Arkansas Americorps reached a memorandum of agreement three years ago to create five scholarships, which were awarded during the 2011 fall semester. An additional five scholarships were given during the 2013 fall term. The new scholarships will be awarded in addition to those already awarded.

Kindergarten Round-Up DeWitt Public Schools is excited to announce it is time for the 2014 Kindergarten Round-up and registration. Kindergarten registration will take place on the DeWitt and Gillett Elementary campuses on Thursday, March 20, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This registration is for any buck-a roo who will be five (5) years old on or before August 1, 2014. Parents will need to bring several documents on the day of registration. An official birth certificate or other approved age documentation as well as the child’s social security card is needed. Your child’s current immunization or shot record s will be collected by the school nurse. If you have participated in a well child check up recently please bring with you, however, if you have not, a form to take to the physician will be offered. Lastly, a proof of residence will be required.

This proof may be a utility bill, rental agreement or lease agreement. This year parents are asked to bring their child to the round-up. Your child will be given a short skills checklist and then receive a gift for their participation. Michele reported on the January 11 quilt class at Cook’s Lake. Marlon gave an interesting presentation on bald eagles.

It was surprising to learn that the “eagle cry” we always hear on a TV show is actually the voice of the Red Tailed Hawk because the actual eagle cry is not very impressive.

During Show and Share: Marsha showed several of the Cook’s Lake projects she had recently finished, a walker tote, a casserole carrier, a pumpkin wall hanging and a snowman banner.

CBCC FEBRUARY MEETING The February meeting of the Crockett’s Bluff Community Center was held Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. Approximately 30 members were present to enjoy the wonderful potluck meal that was brought by everyone. The blessing was given by Bro. Charles Floyd Jackson, pastor of Crockett’s Bluff Baptist Church. After the meal was finished and the tables were cleaned, everyone enjoyed several games of bingo conducted by Shirley Jackson and Peggy Bullock.

The word we received today is that if everything goes as expected, Bro. Dee will be moved from ICU into a private room today. (Refreshment of memory): Bro. Dee had a very bad wreck in his privately owned semi a couple of weeks ago.

He could not remember what happened because the cab was smashed so bad. Bro. Dee was flown by helicopter to UAMS in Little Rock, where he remains today. Talk about a lucky person.

GOD TRULY WAS AND IS WITH BRO. DEE WEBB!!!! I will try to keep you folks updated and please, keep praying for him and his entire family!!

Between the Lines

By Brenda Blagg Juxtaposition of two events — an ongoing legislative session and the opening of the filing period for this year’s elections — could prove costly for the state’s citizens. Most directly impacted are the more than 87,000 lowincome Arkansans who stand to lose newly acquired health insurance, although they aren’t the only potential losers in the politically infused legislative session.

This is only the Legislature’s third fiscal session ever. Some conflict was inevitable because such sessions convene in election years, but the political influences at work on this Legislature seem particularly strong.

It all relates to the ongoing national debate over the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare, which is despised by many, although not all.

Arkansas lawmakers are debating whether to fund again this state’s private option insurance program, which the Legislature created just a year ago as an alternative to part of the federal health care law.

Instead of directly expanding Medicaid rolls for more qualifying low-income people, the private option uses the federal Medicaid dollars to subsidize private insurance for Arkansas people whose earnings fall below 138 percent of

the federal poverty level.

Republicans in the Legislature led a tough fight a year ago to create the private option, securing a hard-to-get three-quarters’ vote in both houses.

The federal government approved the program, which other conservative states have since looked to mimic.

In fact, Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat who worked with lawmakers to develop the program, spent part of last week explaining it to other governors at a national conference.

The private option debate is about what’s best for Arkansas, Beebe emphasized, and will not affect what happens in Washington to keep or kill Obamacare.

The Arkansas Senate has reauthorized private option funding. But there is an ongoing impasse in the 100-member House of Representatives, where repeated efforts have fallen a few votes short of the 75 necessary to pass the appropriation. The House was supposed to try again on Tuesday but adjourned without taking it up.

A relative handful of lawmakers stand in the way of passage, as Beebe explained, noting not only the potential impact on those tens of thousands who have signed up for insurance but also on the state’s general budget.

aid dollars will create an $89 million hole in the state’s budget, forcing what Beebe called “draconian” cuts for the next fiscal year.

As the funding debate continues, this filing period looms. Filing opened Monday and ends at noon on March 3.

Some lawmakers fear a vote for the private option will cause someone to run against them, especially during this time when attention is so focused on the legislative impasse. Some of them might be persuaded to vote for it after noon on March 3, but not now.

Legislators can’t really twiddle their collective thumbs until the filing window closes, costing taxpayers money as they wait. Nor would leaders be wise to interrupt the session for such a purely political concern.

So, they creep through less controversial budget votes and try to break the impasse.

For the record, if lawmakers fail to reauthorize the program, some may still lose re-election.

There are voters on the other side of the issue, too, in the general election if not the primaries.

Not authorizing the spending will end insurance for more than 87,000 people. It will also cause hospitals to have to absorb costs that those insurance dollars would

have covered as noninsured people return to emergency rooms for unreimbursed care.

Any rewrite of the state’s budget without the additional Medicaid dollars will cause cuts that will be felt by other Arkansans. The most obvious are college students who could pay tuition increases if state funding falls short for the colleges and universities.

So far, Beebe and legislative leaders have been so sure they could eventually win the votes to continue the private option, no one has tackled the full budget rewrite.

If and when they do, that will take time, time away from the campaign trail as lawmakers would have to extend this session.

At least, lawmakers resisted a related request from some of their colleagues to abandon the rule that prohibits House members from campaign fund-raising during a session.

Unable to raise money and stuck in Little Rock, those frustrated candidates should have added incentive to get the legislative work done — preferably with the private option intact.

The Presumptuous Christian

By William Wood We are warned by the Scriptures not to be Presumptuous! 1st Cost. 10:12 “Let him that thinketh he stands take heed lest he fall.” A very common cause of men thinking they can stand by their own Power and knowledge is continued worldly prosperity! Give a man wealth, let all his business ventures e greatly successful, let his Ship come in regularly, so to speak, let his barns be full & overflowing, let his land yield abundantly and his crops be sold at the right time to bring the highest price, let the weather be exactly right to produce such crops, let him be considered in his community as a successful citizen, and one who is heaping up wealth, and that man is in great danger of thinking he can stand, when all the time he has nothing at all but what God has give him!! Or let a person enjoy continued health, let him know no sickness, allow him to march thru life and live happily, let him have a buoyant spirit, with a smile on his face, always seeming to dodge the cares of life that come to his neighbors, then we say that the end of this Person may well be Presumptuous, and he will say “I stand!” King David said, “In my Prosperity I shall never be moved,” and we are not better than David, nor half as good. If God always rocked us in the Cradle of Prosperity, if we are always bounced on the knees of fortune, if we never had any losses, nor clouds to block out the Sunshine, nor bitter drops in our cups of life to drain, we might well become overcome with Pleasure & think “I understand, Why don’t the rest of you People be like me?” And the man might stand for a while , but he is every moment in danger of falling, so that he may learn where the Blessings come from!

It is like a man asleep in the crows nest, high above the deck of the ship, I have been there many times, and I was well aware of the danger if I should relax my hold on the sail during a storm. So the point of the sermon is that we thank God for our afflictions, we thank Him for our times of low spirit, when we have to serve Him by faith only! We thank Him for our losses of Prosperity, for we feel that had it not happened to us, had He not “chastened us every morning and vexed us every evening.” We might have become too secure, and think we were standing, when we were about to fall. Continued well being in any area of our life is a fiery trial.

“As the firing pot is for silver, and the furnace for Gold, so is a man to His (Gods) Praise!” In other words the trials of life are needed to cause us to Praise God for helping us to stay humble and trust Him through it all.

Amen.

Bringing Life

By Pastor Steve Ellison Jairus, a synagogue official, came to Jesus in Mark 5:22 with an unsurmountable problem. His twelve year old daughter was dying. Jesus was always compassionate.

He went to the home of Jairus to help. However, Jesus was also always aware of teachable moments to train his disciples. In this case, Jesus took the opportunity to separate His inner circle from the rest of His disciples so that He could teach them a very important lesson.

Jairus’ daughter died before Jesus got to her. Jesus was about to restore life to this very dead girl. We know that she was dead because of the presence of mourners, both volunteer and paid. It was customary to pay musicians and wailers to give a public demonstration of the family’s grief (Amos 5:16). In spite of Jesus speaking metaphorically about her only being asleep, there is no doubt that she was in fact dead.

Some teach that Jesus brought Peter, James, and John to the home of Jairus so that they could serve as witnesses to the fact that this girl was dead. That was totally unnecessary. The paid mourners testify to that fact. Peter, James, and John were there for their education. Jesus was showing them a physical resurrection to illustrate spiritual resurrection. Jesus can raise the physically dead, imparting new life to them. More importantly, Jesus can raise the spiritually dead, imparting new and eternal life to them. In this scene (Mark 5:35-43), Jesus spoke four times. In verse 36, He gave a word of encouragement, which is a word of faith. The key is “only keep believing”. In verse 39, Jesus spoke a word of hope, declaring not that the girl was not dead, but rather that He could raise the dead as easily as we can wake the sleeping. In verse 41, Jesus spoke the word of life and power. He commanded the girl to do that which is impossible apart from His enabling power.

Peter, James, and John witnessed a frantic and emotional scene. They learned many valuable lessons about what happens when Jesus is brought in faith to the spiritually dead (verses 35-43). Unbelievers will jeer and mock, treating Jesus with scorn. Those walking by sight will tell us under the guise of kindly helpfulness, that it is too late and no use to bring Jesus. Bystanders will cause distractions and they will only get louder.

Jesus can and will quickly and forcefully dispense with the distractions and those who cause them. Only Jesus can speak new life into the spiritually dead. Some readers are confused about Jesus command not to tell anyone and they teach that since it was not yet time for Jesus to go the cross, He was simply keeping His fame from spreading too quickly. Certainly there is some truth to that, but I think there is a more important reason.

When we bring Jesus to a spiritually dead person and He imparts life, there is no need for us to testify or witness to that. If a dead person comes to life, the new life in the formerly dead person is testimony that cannot be hidden. If the watching world cannot see the change from death to life, then life has not been imparted and this spiritually dead person is still dead in trespasses and sins. Mark notes that Jesus told them to feed the girl. When a person is born again, it is our responsibility to nourish him with Truth. This newborn will be

Sin, Suffering and the Sovereignty of God

By Tom Smith Seems like the older I get, the less I understand.

These past weeks have been a whirlwind that have left me feeling like a person hanging on for dear life on a runaway rollercoaster. Somehow I thought the older I got the more things would begin to slow down.

Boy, was I wrong!

Not only am I busier now than any other time in my life—serving as full-time wing chaplain at my Air National Guard unit and also as bi-vocational pastor at a little country church— I’m also seen more and more people grappling with “Sin, Suffering and the Sovereignty of God.” Two weeks ago I wrote a column on “Cycles and Seasons Of Life” from Ecclesiastes 3:1. In it I shared about one of our unit’s crew chiefs whose plane crashed while flying a fire detection mission for the Forestry Service. I wrote about the brevity and uncertainty of life and how we must entrust our lives to a sparrow-watching, haircounting, tear-catching God. Right on the heels of that the 10-year-old son of one of our unit members, who’d been battling cancer for seven years, died. What a blessing he was! So full of life and courage right up until the very end; yet, God chose to give him ultimate healing in Heaven instead of temporal healing here on earth.

Then, this past week I visited another unit member in his 40’s, who’s never smoked, drank or chewed and ran three miles every day. But, three months ago he was diagnosed with Stage Four cancer and is now battling for his life. Doesn’t seem right that someone like him would come down with cancer, but he did.

“That’s not fair,” someone cries.

“You’re right,” I reply. “But, then, who said life had to be fair?”

Yes, dear Reader, life’s not fair—at least by our standards; neither is it kind. But, that’s where Faith and Trust in a loving Heavenly Father come in, especially when you’re trying to make sense of things like those mentioned above.

Without a doubt, one of the greatest mysteries we grapple with is that of evil and why “good people

suffer.” That’s why a lot of folks turn their back on God, organized religion, matters of Faith, etc., because none of this stuff makes sense—at least from a natural, logical perspective.

But, again, that’s where we must bring our doubts, perplexities, anger, fears, etc., to God and “let God be God.” Truly, “His thoughts are not my thoughts and His ways are not my ways—for they’re much higher (deeper) than mine” (Isaiah 55:89). Even though I may not understand why I, a loved one or friend suffers, I must still entrust my life into the nail-scarred Hands of the One Who promised to “never leave me or forsake me” (Hebrews 13:5)—even Jesus, the One Who came all the way from Heaven to show us the Father’s Love.

Without that as the spiritual North of my soul’s compass, I surely would throw my hands up and say “What’s the use?!?” or shake my fist at Heaven. It’s hard enough to cope with life’s hardships and heartaches with Faith; I’d certainly not want to try doing so without it because it’d be virtually unbearable.

Truly, it’s my Faith in a God I cannot see. . .trusting that He will “work everything together for good in my life as I love Him and fulfill His Purpose for my life” (Romans 8:28) . . . resting in the assurance that He is with me, guiding me and has a Plan for my life (Psalm 46:1; Proverbs 3:5-6; Jeremiah 29:11). . .that enables me to go on when the easiest thing to do would be to give up and grow bitter.

Here’s praying you’ll look up and cry out to the Lord right now, dear Reader, if you’re at “Wit’s End Corner,” which is at the corner of Hopelessness and Despair (Ps. 107:27). He’ll hear your cry and answer your prayer by whispering, “Trust Me. Rest in Me.” Only in so doing will you be able to still have His Hope and Peace when life’s caving in on top of you.

Boats will launch according to their paid registration entry number. The entry fee is $110.00 per 2-person team which in-

cludes participating in the $500.00 “Big Bass Pot”.

Fishermen are encouraged to register early to receive the discounted entry fee. (A $15.00 Late Fee is assessed for those that register at the ramp on the day of the tournament).

Winners of the tournament will receive $2500 in cash. Top 10 places are guaranteed cash and prizes. In addition, the first seventy five teams to sign up will receive a free official tournament shirt designed and produced

by Gary Sullivant, Vision Graphics. Six random drawings for $50 Cash will be given away, but in order to be eligible to win, the angler must be sporting the 2014 official Sanders – Piper Benefit Tournament shirt.

Fee also includes two tickets to the King Kat Fish Fry that will be held in the Pine Bluff Regional Park Waterfront Facility immediately following the weigh-in. Beverages will be provided by Three

Rivers Distributing Co. 2002 marked the 1st year the Bass Tournament was renamed in memory of Bill Sanders and in 2008; Bo Piper was added to the Memorial event.

Both Bill and Bo were avid fishermen, hunters and sportsmen and enjoyed the outdoors until their deaths. Bill was very instrumental in starting this Annual Agency Bass Tournament and always worked so hard to make it a hugely successful event and Bo always enjoyed volunteering for the event.

Proceeds from this 17th Annual tournament will benefit the Area Agency on Aging and 100% of the donations remain in Southeast Arkansas. The Area Agency provides many services to the frail and elderly including Meals on Wheels. home care, transportation and senior centers. The Area Agency operates these programs throughout Southeast Arkansas in-

cluding Arkansas, Ashley, Bradley, Chicot, Cleveland, Desha, Drew, Grant, Jefferson and Lincoln Counties. 100% of the proceeds will be used for services in these southeast Arkansas counties.

AETN Foundation Brings Ethan Bortnick, Damian McGinty to Stuttgart for Special September Concert The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) Foundation is currently the exclusive outlet for tickets to “Ethan Bortnick in Concert With Damian McGinty” Sunday, Sept. 21, at 3 p.m. at the Grand Prairie Center, 2709 Highway 165 South in Stuttgart.

McGinty will be live in the AETN studios Sunday, March 9, at 6:30 p.m. during the broadcast of the family music special “Ethan Bortnick Live in Concert: The Power of Music.” Tickets to the Stuttgart performance will be available for donations during the broadcast.

“Ethan Bortnick Live in Concert: The Power of Music” features the 12-year-old composer, pianist and entertainer Bortnick, accompanied by a 50-piece orchestra, four-piece band, and the 120-member Kids Choir.

Bortnick performs with passion and heart – his fingers fly across the piano keys in “Minute Waltz,” and the audience enjoys “Rock Around the Clock,” claps to the beat of “Lean On Me,” and participates in a sing-along of “Crocodile

Rock.” He’s joined by special guests McGinty of “Glee” and Celtic Thunder and Grammynominated vocalist Jane Monheit.

Beyond his gifts as a consummate musician, Bortnick is a driven humanitarian. This special highlights his belief that music has a higher purpose – an ability to emotionally connect people, encourage them to help others and, ultimately, affect change in the world, as presented in his own composition “Anything is Possible.” Through his music, Bortnick has helped raise more than $30 million for children’s charities and other causes across the world.

Bortnick is the youngest performer ever to headline his own international concert tour, and to date he has appeared in more than 200 concerts in the United States, Canada, Brazil, South Africa and Australia.

McGinty joined Celtic Thunder at age 14 and with them completed four coast-to-coast tours of the U.S.A. and Canada, sold over 1 million CDs and DVDs and more than 400,000 concert tickets,

State Representative Deborah Ferguson (District 51West Memphis) and State Representative David Hillman (District 13-Almyra) presented a citation to alt.

Consulting and Mid-South Community College on Tuesday commending the company and the college for their work on the Farm to Fuel project.

In, October, alt.Consulting, an Arkansas-based nonprofit, announced the launch of Farm to Fuel, a project to commercialize small-scale biodiesel refining technology developed at Mid South Community College (MSCC) in West Memphis, AR. Farm to Fuel aims at creating small business jobs as well as energy autonomy for small rural communities like DeWitt.

MSCC is in the process of constructing the microrefinery that is the keystone of the Farm to Fuel project, but that hasn’t kept alt.Consulting and the City of DeWitt from gearing up for the project.

The City of DeWitt now has a truck equipped to collect waste vegetable oil and containers ready to distribute to about a dozen commercial customers this week. Recruitment is underway to add more customers as collection begins. Volunteers in the community have started recycling their used cooking oil to the

new Delta Bioenergy and Recycling facility to process into biodiesel.

The city has also hired a renewable energy technology graduate from Phillips County College of the University of Arkansas to manage the collection business.

Local entrepreneur Johnny Davis has installed a Springboard Biodiesel processor, leasing from alt.

Consulting, to start processing the waste vegetable oil into biodiesel until the new micro-biorefinery can be built at MSCC. He has used small batches of biodiesel produced this winter to heat his facility. Mr. Davis is also renovating the old fuel station facility to house Delta Bioenergy and Recycling and his retail animal feed business, ARCO Seed. alt.Consulting is also working with entrepreneurs in DeWitt to develop a community market to feature local food products similar to the River Market concept in Little Rock.

The organization has started working with other communities such as Dumas, AR to develop their community’s entrepreneur strategy for economic development. Dumas plans to be the next to implement the Farm to Fuel strategy.

COMMUNITY NEWS DES and GES Participate in Literacy Awareness Activity DeWitt and Gillett Elementary Schools participated in the Read the Most from Coast to Coast literacy awareness activity. Kids were allowed to read as many books as possible during the day and take Accelerated Reader tests on them. The schools also invited guest readers to read to the classes. The National Goal from Renaissance Learning-Accelerated Reader was for all students participating nationwide to take 5 million tests. At 2:00 p.m., there had been 4,112,219 AR tests taken across the nation.

Bumbos, Boosters and Highchairs: Oh My! Injuries from Falls on the Rise

By Sam Smith, MD, Surgeon in Chief, Arkansas Children’s Hospital When my kids were growing up, a highchair was about as sophisticated as a feeding seat got!

Nowadays, parents have more options, including Bumbo seats, to make feeding little ones more convenient.

But with the convenience of these upgraded highchairs and alternate feeding seats comes risk.

Active kids and gravity don’t always mix, so if left unattended, children can fall from these seats and sustain injuries that can be quite serious.

Unfortunately, incidents of children being injured from falls from highchairs and other booster seats are on the rise; in fact, a recent study conducted by the Center for Injury Research and Policy of The Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital found that more than 9,400

children were treated each year during the course of their study for injuries associated with highchairs or booster seats. That’s 24 children a day being treated in emergency rooms across the U.S. for these injuries!

It’s easy to think of these seats as “safety chairs”, as they often come with straps and buckles to keep children secure; however, these shouldn’t be confused with things like car seats that are anchored to your car seat and unable to be moved by the force of even a small child.

The popular Bumbo Baby Seat, which is round with horseshoeshaped leg openings, was recalled in 2012 due to reports of children being injured from falling from the seats, both when they were on the floor and

when they were placed on tables or other elevated surfaces.

Owners of the Bumbo seats were encouraged to contact the seat’s maker, Bumbo International, for a free repair kit that includes a seatbelt and anchors to attach the belt to the seat. If you have a Bumbo seat and are in need of the repair kit, visit http://recall.bumbousa.com for information. If you have young children, it’s also a good idea to visit the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website at www.cpsc.gov for updates on recent recalls.

If a child falls from a highchair or booster seat, injuries can range from extremity fractures (think arm or wrist) to damage to the face, teeth or jaw, and even skull fractures. If your child has fallen and you sus-

pect the injuries may be serious, look for swelling and significant bruising; if present, they would warrant a visit to the emergency room to rule out a fracture.

If your child has fallen and hit his head, watch for signs of sleepiness, nausea or vomiting, changes in alertness and uncontrollable crying that can’t be consoled after some time. If your child experiences these symptoms, visit the ER as soon as you can to have them checked out.

Supervision is key to preventing your kids from falling from a highchair or booster seat. It’s no surprise that young ones enjoy trying to stand and wiggle, which can lead to falls.

What else can parents do to prevent these falls?

Here are some tips from the Juvenile Product

Manufacturer’s Association: • Never depend on the feeding tray to restrain or protect baby. Instead, secure the waist and crotch restraint straps. Use the restraints every time you place a child in the high chair to prevent falls from the child standing up or sliding out.

• Prevent tip over by keeping the highchair far enough from the table, counter or wall so the baby can’t push off from it.

• Secure the safety latch on a folding highchair each time you unfold it for use.

• Never use a bouncer or booster seat on an elevated surface like countertops.

• Do not use portable hook-on chairs on glass or loose tabletop, or on a table with a single pedestal, leaf, tablecloth or

placemat.

• Check stability and sturdiness of table and high chair before seating a child.

It’s always a sad thing to see a child in our Emergency Department with an injury that was preventable. Make sure to heed these safety tips to keep your kids safe in their seats.

University Arkansas Monticello Golf

Coach Heather Wall has been the UAM Men’s and Women’s Golf Coach for two years now and is putting their program on the map. Coach Wall was born and raised in Lakeland, Floriday, attended Florida Southern College and was a member of the golf team there for four years. During her time there, her team won the 2007 NCAA National Championship.

Mrs. Wall was also a 3-Time NCAA All-American, won 3 individual tournament titles, and still hold the record for lowest scoring average in a season and lowest one day score (-6) just to name a few. After graduating in 2009, she turned professional, played the

Symetra and SunCoast Tours for two years and then decided she would try her hand at college coaching.

The men’s and women’s teams at UAM are young, dedicated and full of talent. The men’s roster is made up of 8 men that come from Iceland, England, Montana, Texas, Florida and Arkansas.

Four out of the five starters are sophomores and the other young man is a freshman. These men work very hard and have their eyes on a Great American Conference Championship.

At the first tournament of the season, the GAC Preview, the UAM Men broke the school record in all three tournament

rounds shooting 293297-297. They were the only team in the field where nobody on the team ever shot in the 80s. At the conclusion of the fall season, the Boll Weevils were an amazing 11.56 shots better as a team than last year. As long as they stay patient and believe in themselves and in each other they will be in contention for the Conference Title.

The women’s roster is made up of six young women that come from California, Texas, Florida and DeWitt’s own Lauren Johnson. Freshman Lauren Johnson led the team in the fall with the lowest scoring average, finished in the top 10 three out of four times

and broke two scoring records for lowest one day and 2 day scores. Pamela Quiatchon, a sophomore from Oxnard, California won two tournaments individually last year as a freshman and is still playing well, turning in a couple of top 10 finishes. The women’s team also improved a great deal as a team from this fall compared to last fall.

They improved by 11.25 shots. They had their best finish at Henderson’s Lady Reddy Invitational in Arkadelphia.

The Blossoms shattered the school record in both rounds. It was previously 350, which the women broke last year.

But at this tournament, the Lady Blossoms shot

an impressive 334-324.

If the women can feed on all the positives from the fall and keep trusting in the process, the scores will only get better. The ultimate goal is to win the Conference Championship. That’s why they play the game.

These are very exciting times for UAM Golf.

They are also in the process of adding a hitting building with a driving range and artificial putting green to campus.

This will be a huge help and benefit each player’s game immensely.

The golf teams are scheduled to have a Fundraiser Tournament Saturday, March 8 2014 at Oak Hills Country Club in DeWitt, Arkansas. Pro-

ceeds will go towards the on-campus hitting building and putting green. The format will be a 3 Man Scramble and will cost $65 per player and includes lunch. The tournament will also feature cash prizes, a chipping contest, closest to the pin and mulligans.

The tournament will be flighted. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and play will begin at 9. Both the men’s and women’s teams will be there playing and helping. It will be a fun day of golf for all.

COMMUNITY NEWS Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame to Induct New Members The Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame will induct six individuals whose leadership and service have brought distinction to Arkansas agriculture, the state’s largest industry.

The group will be honored at the 26th annual induction luncheon, 11:30 a.m., March 7 in the Ambassador Ballroom of Little Rock’s Embassy Suites Hotel.

The inductees are R. Marion Berry of Gillette (Arkansas County), O.H. “Doogie� Darling of Crossett (Ashley County), Leroy Isbell of England (Lonoke County), Ruben H. Johnson of Magazine (Logan County), Keith Lusby of Fayetteville (Washington County) and J. Keith Smith of Hot Springs (Garland County).

R. Marion Berry, 71, former presidential adviser to President William H. Clinton and former member of The United States House of Representatives. During his time in Washington, D.C., Berry promoted agriculture worldwide. Among his greatest accomplishments, Berry served on the House Agriculture Committee during the writing of the 2002 farm bill.

Former Chief of Staff Chad Causey worked closely with Berry during that time. Causey witnessed Berry’s aspirations. “In the years to come, the Cuban embargo will fade into history along with other bygone vestiges of the Cold War. When it finally happens, Marion Berry probably won’t be mentioned in that story, but he should be,� Causey said. “During his

time in Congress, Berry tirelessly championed the cause for direct cash sales of agriculture products to Cuba. It was his early effort in bringing together human rights groups and the agriculture industry that began the erosion of the embargo.�

O.H. “Doogie� Darling, 85, retired forester of Georgia-Pacific Corporation. Darling has been revered as one of the most respected leaders in forestry for five decades. The former commissioner of the Arkansas Forestry Commission managed 3 million acres of Georgia-Pacific’s timberland at the peak of his career.

Darling was one of the first pioneers of a landowner assistance program that provided management advice and forestry services to southern Arkansas farmers struggling to make ends meet following the Depression and World War II. Leroy Isbell, 89, owner and operator of Isbell Farms.

Isbell pioneered zero grading of rice fields in Arkansas that led to tremendous water savings and many other benefits for agriculture. As a result of zero grading his rice fields and being the first to harvest Japanese rice varieties in the United States, Leroy and his son Chris were recognized as 1996 Rice Farmers of the Year by Rice Farming Magazine.

In 1993, Chris was awarded the Rice Grower’s Meritorious Achievement Award. In his acceptance speech he told the audience, “It was not hard to look like a big man when you were standing on your father’s shoulders.�

Ruben H. Johnson, 83, retired employee of the Uni-

versity of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service.

Johnson worked in a variety of capacities while in the UACES, ultimately becoming its interim director. His greatest accomplishment would come with the initiation of the Research Verification Program, a program that took research and applied it to actual farming situations through on-farm demonstrations.

Keith Lusby, 66, retired professor and head of the Department of Animal Science at the University of Arkansas. Lusby was responsible for a major Animal Science Department renovation and building program where more than $10 million was raised during his 16 years as department head. His efforts increased scholarship endowments, enrollment numbers and faculty positions to the program.

J. Keith Smith, the late pioneer in the development of the broiler industry in south Arkansas which presently employees 38,000 Arkansans and contributes $3.3 billion statewide. Smith was CEO of the Keith Smith Company until 1981 when he appointed his son James Keith Smith, II, as president.

The mission of the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame is to build public awareness of agriculture and to formally recognize and honor individuals whose selfless efforts have led to significant contributions to agriculture’s impact on the prosperity of local communities and the state. The Agriculture Hall of Fame is sponsored by the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce and Arkansas Farm Bureau.

Second Annual Spring Frenzy The Community Health Education Foundation invites shoppers and vendors to the second annual unique spring shopping event, 2014 Spring Frenzy Marketplace, March 14-15, at the Craighead County District Fair Expo Center.

Farm Family Honored

Moving To and Through Lent

Lance and Donna Padgett, the 2013 South Arkansas County Farm Family of the Year, were honored with an official plaque on February 25th during the monthly meeting of the Arkansas County Farm Bureau meeting.

“Let no one say when he is tempted, ‘I am tempted

by God’; for God cannot be tempted by evil nor does He tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is fully grown, brings forth death.” 1 Peter 1:13-15 As we approach the season of Lent, we should be mindful of certain realities; not least of which are those temptations we face daily. Too often we fall into a trap by which we reason that when something happens – anything – it would not have happened unless the Lord willed it to happen. This is not to say our Lord does not work in and around our lives daily, but sin presents itself at least as often and must never be confused with what is good and right and uplifting and is not always self-serving.

St. Peter is clear; our Lord is not tempted by evil nor does He tempt us with evil. We can often be tested, and I will grant there is a fine line, but temptation seeks to interrupt our communion with the Lord; testing prepares us for the next Godly moments for the challenges we will surely face will be great. Like school work, tests prepare us for the next level.

So it is with the season of Lent. It is an invitation to enter into a 40-day test like Jesus’ time in the wilderness before He embarked on His ministry. It is necessary that we shake off the old and begin anew each day. Let us not take this time lightly, and let us not brush it aside as unnecessary or as a “Catholic thing”.

Lent is very much a Christ thing which our Lord Himself endured. And in this experience as we seek to draw closer to our Lord, let us also discover even more about ourselves; our weaknesses as well as our strengths – and in this, learn more about what the Lord would ask of us.
