SENIOR DRAGONETTES HIT THE ROAD The Dragonettes hit the road for a handful of away games.

They face the Star City Bulldogs on Tuesday, the Monticello Billies on Wednesday, and the Hamburg Lions on Friday.

In 1947, the National FFA Board of Directors designated the week of George Washington’s birthday as National FFA Week in recognition of his legacy as an agriculturist and farmer. National FFA Week is an opportunity for FFA members, alumni and sponsors to advocate for agricultural education and FFA. Kalli Smith is the president of the local chapter. Other officers include: Ina Cox, Vice President; Cole George, Secretary; Eli Patterson,

Treasurer; P.J. Woods, Sentinel; Omar Valencia, Parliamentarian; and Reporter, Aiden White.

The local chapter participated in area competition in Brinkley in November. The Open and Closing Team, Omar Valencia, James Gilcrease, Eric Vargas, Jesus Vargas, Luis Chaves, Wyatt Luebke, and Tyler Juneau, placed second at the competition. Aiden White also placed 4th in Extemporaneous Speaking.

Competition at ASU on December 4.

Upcoming competitions will be at ASU on March 4. The electricity team with members Luis Chavez, Aiden White, Jesus Vargas, James Gilcrease, Eric Vargas, and Omar Valencia will be competing. Parker Brown, Gerome Walker, David Connell, Stonewall Bryant, and Cole George will also be participating in Livestock Competition.

The Horticulture Team with Ina cox, Kalli Smith, Aaron Crawford, Tyler Juneau and

P.J. Woods will also be competing.

The group’s annual fundraiser, a fruit sale, was successful with Alden Hargrove as the top salesman. The group also had a float in the Arkansas County Fair Parade and placed second in their division. In the spring, the group with have their annual FFA Banquet and will also be selling plants at the Arkansas County Home and Garden Show. James Phillips and Terry Turner work with the local FFA group.

Rice Federation Honors Senator Dismang

George Dunklin, Chuck Wilson and Senator Jonathan Dismang

Senator Jonathan Dismang was honored with the 2014 Excellence in Public Service award presented by the Arkansas Rice Federation.

Dismang received the award at the federation’s annual meeting in the Grand Prairie Center in Stuttgart. Dismang was recognized for his efforts to help not only rice farmers and millers, but all farmers and the agriculture industry. For example, he sponsored Act 1401 to provide tax breaks for grain drying facilities. The act creates a sales tax exemption on utility costs at grain drying and storage facilities. It will save those facilities more than $4 million a year in lower taxes, beginning next year.

“I am humbled by this award because it was awarded by some of the hardest working people I know,” Dismang said.

Dismang has been elected by his colleagues to be President Pro Tem of the Arkansas Senate during the 90th General Assembly, which begins with the 2015 regular session of the legislature. He represents Senate District 28, which comprises Prairie County and parts of Arkansas, Lonoke, Monroe, White and Woodruff Counties.

The Excellence in Conservation Award was presented to Arkansas rice farmer and Ducks Unlimited President George Dunklin who reflected that “thirty years ago, the word conservation barely existed, but today everyone in this room who is a rice farmer is involved in conservation, and I accept this award on all your behalves.”

State Senator Jonathan Dismang received the Excellence in Public Service award and USA Rice Federation’s Director of Arkansas Field Services Chuck Wilson received the Lifetime of Service to the Rice Industry Award.

Kirkpatrick to Donate Bone Marrow Many people donate blood, but few go the extra mile.

DeWitt Middle School teacher Barbara Kirkpatrick is now a bone marrow donor. Having registered fifteen years ago, Mrs. Kirkpatrick never dreamed she would receive a phone call that she was one of eight potential people who could donate bone marrow to save the life of a young woman with leukemia. After further testing, she was on a list of three and finally she found out she was the match.

Mrs. Kirkpatrick will travel to Georgetown Medical Center in Washington D.C. on Monday, February 17th for the procedure. If all goes well, she will have the opportunity to exchange names and addresses with the recipient in one year.

Middle School is very proud of the extreme generosity of Mrs. Kirkpatrick. We are so glad she is part of our school family.

Obituary Richard Vansandt World War ll veteran Richard Leonard Vansandt passed away this past week on February 5, 2014 at the age of 89. Mr. Vansandt was born in Dewitt, Arkansas on February 14, 1924 but moved away when the war called him. He remained a devout Razorback fan his entire life, and kept in constant touch with his eight brothers and sisters.

Richard was predeceased by his father, Wally Havis Vansandt and his mother, Eathel Alice Brown Vansandt. He was predeceased by an infant sister, a brother Wally H. “Dub” Vansandt, Jr. and a sister, Juanita Childs. He is survived by sisters Winnie Kenny Vansandt, Donald Vansandt and Gary Vansandt. He moved to Jacksonville in the early 1960’s and worked for the FAA. He was very active in civic clubs, Sertoma and Toastmasters, as well as the North East Florida Honey Bee Association. He was a long time real estate broker in the west side. He is survived by his five children, Tricia Van Sandt, Peggy L. Rounds and her husband Bruce, Paula L. Vansandt and her life companion David Murphy, Leonard L. “Pete” Vansandt , Jr., Steve A. Vansandt and his wife Susan. Mr. Vansandt was a loving Poppa to nine grandchildren, Tracie Anne Sutton, Charles “Chic” Vansandt, Matthew Rounds, Mark Rounds, Ben Rounds, Aaron Rounds, Kristen “Christian” Padgett, Sarah Vansandt and Connor Vansandt and he was also the very proud Poppa of 10 great grandchildren. His generosity to all of them was legendary; Poppa was a constant source of weird and fun gifts.

The family in Jacksonville had a memorial service at the American Legion Hall on San Juan Ave in Jacksonville, Florida on Saturday, February 15th at 1:00.

It is from my heart that I would like to thank everyone for the beautiful cards, memorials, food, visits, and lots of prayers during Ray’s illness and death. We received comfort from visits with Pastor Jan. I would like to especially thank his caregiver Tammy Haney and hospice for the tenderness and compassion shown.

There are two special neighbors that were there for me, and of course my family that held me up at the most difficult time. I would also like to thank Dr. Tracy and his staff for providing health care for Ray over the years. I am convinced that the Lord provides us with what we need when we need it most. Thanks and blessings to all.

Idella Louise Mann Dewberry, 79, of DeWitt died February 11, 2014. She was born March 1, 1934, in San Diego, CA. She was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years Harry Dewberry and a daughter Melissa Dewberry.

She is survived by her children Lori Cummings and her husband Shane, Bryan Dewberry and his wife Renate of Jacksonville, FL, and Jerry Dewberry of Ardmore, OK, and eight grandchildren.

A graveside service will be March 1, 2014, at McAlister Cemetery in Ardmore, OK.

Sue Dixon Berry, age 67, of DeWitt died February 11, 2014. She was born May 13, 1946 in DeWitt to John Clifton and Dorothy Faye Martin Dixon. Her father preceded her in death.

Survivors include her husband, Mark Berry, daughters and husbands: Angela Berry and Kevin Long of Jenks, OK, Jane Berry and Jon Stubbs of Searcy; son and wife: Jason and Marta Berry of Bayou Meto, mother, Dorothy Dixon,; brothers: Dennis Dixon (Mitzi) of Tichnor, Doug Dixon of Gillett; sister: Ginny Baxter (Bobbie) of Elkins; grandchildren: Molly, Emily and Betsy Long, Susannah and Samuel Stubbs.

Sue was known for her loving service to her family, friends and community. She was involved with the Arkansas Relay for Life, raising over $90,000 as chairperson in 2001. In 2002 she was named Best of DeWitt Citizen of the Year. She cooked many meals for numerous people. and was also known for her beautiful handmade daygowns given to the new babies in the community. She was the best Mimi any grandchild could ask for.

The family wishes to express its grateful appreciation to the staff at the UAMS ICU who gave our wife, mom, and grandmother (and us) the best care we could ever imagine.

Obituary Charles Cleveland Falls Charles Cleveland Falls, 91, of Jacksonville, FL passed away gracefully at his home February 12, 2014.

He retired from the Navy as Master Chief at Mayport Naval Station, Mayport, FL after 30 years of faithful service. His long military career included many leadership and instructor roles.

He was a devoted member of Wesconnett Baptist Church where he served on the finance committee, was a Sunday School teacher and TCU director, a member of Fleet Reserve Branch 126 and a Boy Scout Master as long as his health permitted.

Survivors are his loving wife of 71 years, June; son, John Falls, Sr.; daughter, Dana Falls; grandson, John Falls, Jr. (Paula); granddaughter, Renee’ Sizemore (Scott); two great grandchildren, Garrett and Grace Marie Sizemore; a step great granddaughter, Tristan Pope; sister, Jennie Allen and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family extends a very special thank you to the home bound visitation ministry of Wesconnett Baptist Church and the attention of devoted caregivers.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 26th, 2:00 to 3:00 PM at Essex Funeral Home, with interment immediately following at Thompson Cemetery with full military honors.

Obituary Walter Bowermaster Walter Allen “Hoolie” Bowermaster, 81, of Hartford Illinois passed away January 17th at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton, IL. His life on the river began when he was born February 29, 1932, one of fifteen children to the late James William and Flossie Mae (Brown) Bowermaster on a two room houseboat on the White River in Crocketts Bluff, Arkansas. He married Bettie (Overbey) Bowermaster on July 31, 1952 in East Alton. On the day of their wedding, he received his notice to serve his country and proudly served with the United States Air Force during the Korean War. He was raised on the river throughout his early years and worked over 50 years on the river, retiring in 1992 from Harrahs Gaming in Joliet, Illinois as a towboat captain licensed for all inland waterways. He had followed the paths of many family members and many of his family members and younger generation followed in his paths of the river. He enjoyed his early days of hunting and fishing and had worked as a commercial fisherman. He was the former owner and operator of Hartford Ribs and Hoolies Delmar in Hartford.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge for over 30 years and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He had a special love for old time country music, enjoyed writing and recording songs, visiting karaoke venues and sharing his singing with others. He will be remembered as a caring and loyal friend to all and cherished tending to his wife and family. Bowermaster is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, four children and their spouses, ten grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends.

Obituary Kimberley Ann Barnes Kimberley Ann Barnes, age 49, an angel, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, February 14, 2014. She was born July 28, 1964 in Little Rock to Henry F. Purnell and Annette Williams Purnell. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Henry and Irene Williams and Andrew and Nannie Purnell. Kimberley was a Registered Nurse and worked for UAMS and the VA Hospital for many years. She was a loving mother who raised her son single handedly while in a wheelchair, and she touched many lives over her 20 year battle with MS. She was a lifetime member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church.

She is survived by her loving son, Blake Barnes; her parents, Henry and Annette Purnell; her brother, Tim Purnell and his wife, Tamra; niece, Lauren Purnell and nephew, AJ Purnell; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and other family and friends.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 18, 2014 at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Cabot, visitation one hour prior to service. Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery.

Miss Gillett Pageants Planned

by Darla Grantham The Gillett PTA has scheduled the Miss Gillett pageants to be held Saturday, March 8th, 2014 beginning at 2:00 p.m. in the Gillett High School auditorium. There are four age groups. Little Miss Gillett, age 3–6, Young Miss Gillett, age 7–11, Junior Miss Gillett, age 12–15, and Miss Gillett, age 16–18. Contestants must compete within the age group they fall

on the day of the pageant. Entry fee for each group is $35.00. Each division will have a photogenic winner, and that category will carry an additional $10.00 entry fee. Contestants must reside in the former Gillett school district #66, and/or attend Gillett Elementary/ ABC Preschool to compete. Entry forms and fees must be turned into the elementary office no later than Tuesday, March 4th, 2014. Rehearsal will be held Friday, March 7th at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

Lecture-Concert Series to Feature Baroque Guitarist Xavier Díaz-Latorre

by Tom Moore JONESBORO – Arkansas State University’s LectureConcert Series will feature baroque guitarist Xavier Díaz-Latorre in concert on Thursday, Feb. 20, according to Dr. Tim Crist, chair of the Lecture-Concert Committee.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Fine Arts Center, 2412 Quapaw Way. Admission is free to this and all Lecture-Concert Series events.

“Mr. Díaz-Latorre’s concert provides a very rare opportunity to hear the baroque guitar played by one of the world’s finest early music musicians,” Crist commented. “The baroque guitar’s novel and unique tuning results in cascading scalar lines that resemble harp glissandi. Members of the A-State Guitar Guild could not be more delighted in having Mr. DíazLatorre perform on our campus for our community to enjoy.”

A native of Spain, Díaz-Latorre has given concerts at major venues around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Covent Garden in London, the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin.

Díaz-Latorre performs regularly with world-renowned ensembles such as Hesperion XXI, La Capella Reial de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations.

He also has performed with Al Ayre Español, the Orquesta Nacional de España, Concerto Vocale, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, and Concerto Köln.

Laberintos Ingeniosos is Díaz-Latorre’s vocal-instrumental ensemble, which he has taken to a number of different countries. He has made more than 30 recordings for international CD labels. He teaches early plucked instruments, chamber music, and bass continuo at the Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya.

The program at Arkansas State will be presented with campus funding support from A-State’s Diversity Initiatives Program, Department of Music, College of Fine Arts, and Guitar Guild.

God’s Definition of a Fool

By William Wood In ps’s 14:1 God gives His definition of a person’s state of mind that He calls a “Fool”! Ps’s 14:1 “The fool has said in his heart there is no God...” Although God has the right to call a person a fool, He warns us not to do so. In Matt 5:22 He says that if we call a person a fool we are in danger of hell fire. Part of the reason being that God knows every heart and can call a person a fool who truly fits the definition, while we can’t read their true thoughts. Although man has given his definition of what constitutes a fool, no better description can be given than the one God has Given! He said that when a person has concluded in his heart that there is no God, then he is a fool! We would like to enlarge on this description without changing the meaning. It may have more meaning than some think! To say there is no God is to suppose that we evolved up from some lower form of life, that came into being from natural causes.

To say that this Earth is the result of a great explosion is like saying a stick of dynamite was thrown into a print shop and Websters dictionary fell out on the sidewalk!

To say there is no Supernatural God leaves the sun, and moon, and the Earth unexplained. It leaves life itself unexplained! To say there is no God in unmistakable Proof that the person who believes that is a fool! That is “Thus saith The Lord.” But we need to go deeper into Gods definition of what a fool is. How many of us, who know there is a real live God, do not act at times, as if He does not exist? If He is alive & real, and if He is the same yesterday, today and forever, and if Him and His word are one and the same, how is it that we often fail to Believe what He has written in His word?

If we ignore His word, is that not equal to saying that there is no God, who stands behind His word? Which is the most wrong, to say there is no God, or to say God does not keep all His promises? How we are still looking at Gods definition of a fool! Is it not true that to say there is no God, and to act as if there is no God, is all the same thing? So then I speak to myself, and to the church, let us be very careful that we do not fit Gods definition of what a fool is! Perhaps we could say that we sometimes act foolishly and need to repent for not believing His promises! Even so, this must be bordering on becoming a fool! It is written in Rom. 3:4 “...let God be true, but every man a liar.” (He is a liar if he denies Gods word)It is not Politically Correct today to take a stand for Gods word. The world will not vote for you if you begin to act too much like Jesus. And the church is fast falling into that way of thinking. Its all right to Preach some of the Gospel, but leave the Holiness Part of it alone! But remember church, to say you believe in God, but then not believe He cares how you dress, & talk and live your life is to defame His Holy Character, and that could be worse than denying that He exists!

Touching Jesus If you have ever had or known someone who had a debilitating illness that lasted for years you know how awful that can be. It is surely depressing and affects every part of your life. Mark 5:25-34 describes one such situation, “A woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years, 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse — 27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His cloak. 28 For she thought, “If I just touch His garments, I will get well.” 29 Immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her affliction. 30 Immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched My garments?”

31 And His disciples said to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’” 32 And He looked around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.” NASU This nameless woman had a condition that under Old Testament law rendered her unclean. She could not touch another human being or that person would be unclean for at least the rest of that day and maybe for a week. She could not go to synagogue or offer sacrifices in the Temple. Being perpetually unclean made her an outcast. This condition went on for twelve long years.

She spent all her money on doctors and treatments that only made her condition worse. She was desperate. She had no hope. She was ready to trust Jesus. The healing of this nameless woman is a picture of salvation. All who have been saved were saved in this same manner.

Verse twenty-seven tells us that somehow, someway, this woman heard about Jesus. The news of His great power and great mercy made its way to her. Verse twenty-eight notes that she believed. This passage does not explicitly say how, but somehow God gave her the faith she needed in order to go to Jesus. She responded in that faith, went to Jesus, touched His garments, and was healed. The power of Christ saved her. As always, Christ called on the woman to make her faith and His saving power public. Christ was unwilling to let this nameless woman slip away into the crowd without acknowledging the miraculous healing. Verse thirtythree states that she fell at Jesus’ feet in worship and declared the whole truth. Jesus affirmed what she already knew in her heart; she was saved by the grace and mercy of God. Dear sinner, have you come to the place that you feel helpless and hopeless? Have you exhausted all other avenues for finding peace and joy? Have you heard of Jesus’ saving power? Have you believed that Jesus is the only hope for healing in your life, especially your spiritual life? Have you reached out in faith to Jesus, casting all your cares on Him who cares for you? Have

Cycles and Seasons of Life

The Bible says we all have them.

Although written toward the last part of King Solomon’s life during a time of great idolatry and immorality, Ecclesiastes still has some power truths in its chapters. And, Eccl. 3:1-8 is definitely one of them— for it reminds us “To everything there is a season and a time to every purpose under the heaven” (v.1).

Last week this truth was driven home when the body of one of our crew chiefs at the 188th Fighter Wing in Fort Smith was recovered near Glenwood, AR. He’d been flying fire detection missions for the Forestry Service, but crashed in bad weather.

He was well-liked and respected by his coworkers at the unit.

After visiting with his widow and attending his memorial service, I reflected anew on how fragile life really is.

When Jake left home that morning, kissing his wife and 2 ½-yearold son goodbye, he had no way of knowing that’d be the last time until they meet again in Heaven.

But, such is the nature, cycles and seasons of life.

Someone once wrote, “Life is short, Death is sure, Sin’s the cause, But Christ is the cure.”

How true, how true.

No one needs to tell us of the brevity of life. That truth is often driven home at an early age when one of our pets dies or a loved one passes away. And, even if we’re spared that sorrow until later on in life, we’ll still experience it up-closeand-personal in a real way whether we want to or not.

As Solomon said, “To everything there is a season.”

Just as there are four seasons in the temperate climates—Spring, summer, fall and winter—so are there four seasons in life: Childhood, young adulthood, middle age and senior adulthood.

When we’re young, we feel invincible and think we can conquer the world. We’re willing, as someone said, to “charge hell with a water pistol—without being told!” But, as the years go by. . .and we go through “The University of Hard Knocks”. . .we slowly begin to realize our mortality, vulnerability and inabilities.

And learning to accept them isn’t easy!

Even now, I struggle with my “advancing maturity” and the fact that I can’t run as fast, jump as high and remember as much as I used to. It’s frustrating! It’s discouraging! But, such is the nature of life’s “cycles and seasons.”

That’s why it’s important for us to choose wisely and invest our lives in those things eternal; otherwise, we’ll near the end of our lives with lots of regrets over what “shoulda, woulda, coulda have been.”

In Matthew 6:33 Jesus gave us life’s true “Secret of Success,” which is “Seek first the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness—and all these things will be added unto you.”

He wasn’t preaching a “health, wealth and prosperity gospel” and referring to lots of the world’s goods. Instead, He was saying “Always put the Lord God first in your life and you’ll experience firsthand what true life is all about.”

Again, life is like farming.

In the springtime you plant the seeds. In the summer you fertilize, cultivate, water, etc., the crop.

In the fall you reap the harvest. And, in the winter you enjoy the fruit of your labors.

And, so it is with life. When we’re young, we “sow our seeds” and hopefully don’t spend the rest of our lives hoping for crop failure. Even if you spent your early years “sowing your wild oats,” thank God for His Grace and Mercy that enables us to begin anew.

Here’s hoping you’ll spend some time this week reflecting on “For what is your life? It’s even as a vapor that appears for a while and then vanishes away” (James 4:14). Then let your loved ones know how much you love them and commit to making the coming years “The Season of Joy” as your life becomes a conduit of God’s Love to others. God bless you.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark – Connect Arkansas, a project of Arkansas Capital Corporation, today announced that free adult digital literacy classes will be held at the Smith-Holly Gove Library in Holly Grove.

Each class will last one hour, and Computer Basics II classes will be held at 11 a.m., 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. on February 19. There is a limit of five students for each one hour class, and each student is provided with a computer.

By Pastor JoEllen Green Jackson The February meeting of the Grand Prairie Arts and Crafts Guild met on Feb. 1 in the Stuttgart home of Florence Duffy and JoEllen Jackson. Five members and two guests were called to order by President, Shelley Barber who asked Alice Inman to begin with the in-

vocation. Minutes were read by Secretary, JoEllen Jackson, and the financial report was given by Treasurer, Alice Inman. Both reports were accepted without corrections.

A discussion of old business brought up the need for several hostesses to take some of the meetings through the year. A hostess is responsible for

securing a location, scheduling a speaker or giving a program of some kind. Many share how they make a craft or painting, or bring in a speaker with artistic talent. Hostesses also share refreshments of various kinds.

Alice, already busy with plans for the fall One Man Shows, brought up the idea of making our own award ribbons and Jim Barber said he had some equipment that would make it do-able for the group. Also discussed was suppliers of ribbons which would be used.

Also discussed were plans for some possible field trips during the summer, such as a trip to Marvin Gardens in Hot Springs.

Several suggestions mentioned will be researched.

Program suggestions for some meetings, often held at the Stuttgart Public Library meeting room were some DVD’s by such artists as Julie Brewer, who did a collage demonstration on AETN. The Program, introduced by JoEllen Jackson, hostess, was attended by three husbands of members. Heather Farmer, JoEllen’s next door neighbor, is a taxidermist among many other talents.

Heather showed a deer form which she will use to make a display deer head with rack. She used a rack from a large animal recently killed by her husband, Bradley. She explained how she receives hides and antlers legally and the processes involved in various kinds of

tanning and preservation. She showed how she uses a special clay to build up around the deer’s eyes and how she puts in the false eyes and makes them look real. She does many kinds of animals in addition to the deer, most commonly, ducks and snakes. She said she had six deer she was working on currently and a few ducks. She was originally taught by her uncle and has attended conventions, as well, picking up different techniques and refining her talents. Heather also does beautiful stained glass, which is in view in a front window in her home which she created and had installed. She paints, with works on canvas, even re-painting her house with her husband. She painted one of her interior walls in blackboard paint, and sketches on those with colored chalk, as well. Her demonstration was well received and she fielded many interesting questions.

The Treasure of the month was brought

by Shelley Barber and won by Florence Duffy. Inside a beautiful gift bag was a book of stories about animals and their “Mysterious Ways� by the editors of Guideposts. Also in the bag was a beautifully decorated memo box with matching pen and paper.

The group was dismissed to enjoy refreshments, including a Pistachio cake and coffee.

The Dragonettes Lose to the Lumberjacks, Hit the Road this Week The Senior Dragonettes hosted the Warren Lumberjacks on Valentine’s Day and didn’t receive a lot of love, losing by a score of 45-25. Lauren Pace led DeWitt with nine points. This week the Dragonettes hit the road for a slew of away games against the Star City Bulldogs on Tuesday, the Monticello Billies on Wednesday, and the Hamburg Lions on Friday.

The Junior Dragonettes finished their season Monday night in the semi-finals of the district tournament with a 37-25 loss to Monticello. Three scorers: Karli Rieves, Libby Cox and Taylor Mannis each had 5 points in the effort. The Junior Dragonettes finish the season 9-9 overall and 4-2 in conference play, wrapping up 3rd place. “Coach Gunnell and I would like to thank [the team] for all their hard work and effort throughout the season,� Coach Peeks said.

Merchant Seeks ASU Museum Re- Election as Circuit Announces Final Clerk of Arkansas County Plans

Sarah Merchant Arkansas County Circuit Clerk, Sarah Merchant, announced her candidacy for reelection today. Merchant worked for 14 years as a Deputy Clerk before being elected to her first term and is currently serving her third term as Circuit Clerk.

During her first five years in office Merchant has secured a little over $60,000.00 in grants from the Association of Arkansas Counties which has been used to implement a new land record system and to have a large portion of the county’s deed records scanned. Merchant

is a member of the Arkansas County Records Preservation and Restoration Committee and has worked closely with the committee to have the oldest records in Arkansas County scanned as well. “My goal is to get all of our land records scanned and preserved. I will submit another grant application this month and, if granted, that goal will be achieved by the end of 2015.

In conjunction with the new land records system, Merchant also implemented a new court record system. “The implementation of the new system brought us into compliance with the Legislative Audit in many areas including password protection and audit logging.” Merchant said. “Our Circuit Judge, Prosecuting Attorney and Public Defender now have remote access to all court cases.

We have our website at www.arcocircuitclerk. com and offer remote access to land and court records to the public on a subscription basis through Tittle Searcher.”

Merchant has also started a project which allows interns from Phillips Community College to come into the Circuit Clerk’s Office and serve 80 hours as part of their curriculum requirements. These interns have worked on back scanning and indexing of land records and general office functions including answering the phone and filing.

“I have other projects in mind for the office with a focus on education and preservation. I have enjoyed the past 20 years in the Circuit Clerk’s office and I look forward to serving Arkansas County as long as the public will allow me to. I have an open door policy and a hands on strategy. If re-elected, I will continue to try moving forward with technology, to preserve our historic records and to serve the public to the best of my ability.”

JONESBORO – The second Rockabilly Boogiefest, a benefit concert sponsored by Arkansas State University Museum, will be Saturday, March 1, starting at 6 p.m. in the Military Science Building, 1921 Aggie Road.

The talent line-up, as announced last fall in preparation for Boogiefest, will be Sonny Burgess and the Legendary Pacers, Charlie Rich Jr., and The Stunning Cunning Band — all prominent names among Rockabilly music fans.

These stars also will be vending their hits and memorabilia and autographing photographs throughout the evening. Broadcasting personality Terry Wood joins Rockabilly Boogiefest this year as master of ceremonies.

“Rockabilly Boogiefest 2014 will be dedicated to our region’s native son and Godfather of Rockabilly, Sonny Burgess,” said Dr. Marti L. Allen, ASU Museum director.

Concert proceeds will help fund a new, permanent exhibit on Rockabilly at ASU Museum.

“Rockabilly Boogiefest will help us raise money to develop and produce a new permanent exhibition in the Museum on the subject of Rockabilly in Northeast Arkansas.”

CONWAY, Ark. (AETN) — The Arkansas Educational Television Network (AETN) is now accepting entries for the PBS KIDS Writers Contest through Friday, April 4.

The PBS KIDS Writers Contest is a national initiative designed to promote the advancement of children’s literacy skills through hands-on, active learning. The contest partners with PBS stations nationwide and empowers children in grades K-3 to celebrate creativity and build literacy by writing and illustrating their own stories.

AETN hosts the contest for Arkansas students, and submits first place winning stories to the national contest. Each Arkansas entrant will receive a participation certificate, and 12 winners – three from each grade – will receive an AETN prize pack. In addition, first place winners will be given the opportunity for Clifford the Big Red Dog to visit their school and to tour the AETN studios in Conway. Text must be printed, written legibly or typed. Children who cannot write may dictate their story to be printed, written legibly or typed. Stories must have at least five original, clear and colorful illustrations. Non-English text must be translated on the same page, and the translated text (English text) must adhere to the word count.

Entries will be judged on originality, creative expression, storytelling and integration of text and illustrations. AETN will judge local submissions and send the first place winners from each grade to the national contest. A panel of judges will select 12 national winners for prizes courtesy of LeapFrog.

Fowler Center Presents Award-Winning

Moipei Quartet from Kenya, Saturday, Feb. 22

JONESBORO – The next act featured in the Riceland Distinguished Performance Series at Arkansas State University’s Fowler Center is the award-winning Moipei Quartet from Kenya, Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7:30 p.m. in Riceland Hall.

Opening the show will be Ancestral Drummers of the Congo. The show sponsor is Sodexo.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the previously announced Kenyan Boys Choir is not available for this performance. The Ancestral Drummers of the Congo is a replacement for the presentation at A-State, according to Dr. Wendy Hymes, director of Fowler Center.

The members of the Moipei (pronounced “Moy-pay”) Quartet are the Moipei triplets Mary, Martha and Magdalene and their younger sister Seraphine. Mary sings soprano, Magdalene deep alto, Marta is second soprano and Seraphine alto. At the ages of 17 and 19, they have already been singing and performing for more than a decade.

They have represented Kenya in a number of international events in Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa, China, South Korea, Canada and Venezuela.

In 2006, the girls were appointed the first UNICEF Child Cultural Ambassadors in Kenya and since then won the prestigious SABC Crown Gospel Music Award in Durban, South Africa, for “Best of Africa.” Known for their knowledge of a wide variety of music styles, the quartet performs classical, African, opera, gospel and pop.

The quartet was featured at the inauguration for the Kenyan president last April. Now the group is on its first U.S. concert tour with stops in New York, Memphis, Jonesboro, Dallas, San Antonio, St. Louis, and Chicago.

The siblings’ musical talent was evi-

dent early in life. “Our parents discovered our talents when we were two and three years respectively. They tell us they hummed a tune and we hummed back.” Besides their vocal talents, the girls each play instruments including flute, saxophone, violin and clarinet.

Their father is their vocal coach and has been a great influence in their lives.

The girls are quick to acknowledge the selflessness of their parents. “They have sacrificed a lot to see us where we are today.”

Joining the Moipei Quartet is Congolese master drummer and dancer Chief Bokulaka. Bokulaka will share his one-act show, “Ancestral Drummers of the Congo,” an awe-inspiring and highly interactive drumming tradition from his native Congo and the Central Africa region. According to Hymes, the audience will be enthralled by the show’s eclectic mix of high-octane drumming, vivid costumes, and beautiful music.

All seating is reserved. Individual tickets for the Riceland Distinguished Performance Series are $30 and $20 for adults, and $23 and $15 for senior citizens and students, $24 and $16 for ASU faculty and staff, and $10 and $6 for ASU students with a current ID. Civil War Youth

For generations in the U.S. as elseware, young boys had served in wartime armies and navies. Civil War Admiral David G. Farragut, the first American officer to achieve that rank, began his career before the War of 1812 as a ten-year-old midshipman.

Nobody knows how many youngsters served in the Civil War. In 1866 a U. S. Sanitary Commission survey of more than a million Union Army enlistment records came up with a total of 10,233 below age 18, of whom 773 were fifteen, 330 were fourteen, 127 were thirteen or younger, including 27 ten or younger. The youngest were enrolled musicians (drummers, fifes, and buglers, as distinguished from bandsman whose age was prescribed as 16 in 1864.)

The boys were remarkably self reliant whether from the farm or the city.

The latter were orphans already on their own and existing from hand to mouth amid the squalor of the slums.

Some enlisted with parental permission, usually in hometown companies, where everyone knew each other and nobody expected the war to last very long in 1861. Many were runaways who didn’t want to miss out on the fun.

Both armies enrolled the youngsters and if they looked fit and healthy enough they were often accepted They were not to be sent into combat but were expected to serve as military time clocks, as buglers sounding some 25 calls pertinent to running a military encampment from reveille to taps. Between calls they ran errands performed camp tasks, cut hair, and sometimes drew maps.

But during combat their post was in the rear, assisting medical personnel at aid stations, helping the wounded, and sometimes burying the dead.

Regardless of bad habits they picked up from older soldiers the boys were excellent morale boosters. They were lively, full of devilment, and rarely discouraged for long. The youngsters seldom asked favors and got few.

One enterprising lad set up a peddlers stand featuring a variety of hard to find delicacies. He outraged the troops by charging ridiculously high prices, but cleaned up enough to send home $65.

Another kid took a hand in a more dangerous game. As a thirteen-year-

old drummer boy in the 114th Pennsylvania, he would disappear for days at a time, always returning with a good excuse for his absence. Later he was caught and exposed as a Confederate spy. It’s not known if he paid the usual penalty or escaped.

As the pace of war quickened, the boys matured fast under the stress of military life. Of the Union’s 1524 winners of the Medal of Honor, more than twenty were mere boys.

One of the most publicized was fourteen-year-old Orion P. Howe of the 55th Illinois, who earned his citation at Vicksburg. When his regiment was running out of ammunition he volunteered to go back to the rear for more, and was badly wounded on the way.

He persevered until finding General Sherman who said he would take care of it and then forgot the matter. It was just as well because the lad asked for the wrong caliber.

McArthur, a Wisconsin native, was too young to enlist in 1861 but when barely seventeen, was appointed adjutant of the 28th Wisconsin and was Colonel of the regiment at war’s end.

He won the Medal of Honor in 1863 and rose to command the army by the turn off the century. But today his record appears obscured by the notoriety of his son, General Douglas McArthur.

I. cadet when the war began, he was captain of the 18th Virginia, at the age of fourteen, and a Major at sixteen. He died of wounds in 1864 as a seventeen year old Lt. Col. Near Batesville Arkansas in 1864, a group of teenagers came together as a cavalry unit named the “popcorn company.” They were commanded by 31 year-old Samuel J. McGuffin. Boys were accepted into the company as young as fifteen. They were fit, intelligent, and mad as hell at the enemy who plundered their homes the previous year.
