MoDOT Announces Bridge Work MoDOT’s Northeast District will undertake twenty-five bridge replacement, new deck and rehabilitation projects costing around $9.4 million this summer. Many of the roads will be closed at the bridge during construction, and a full list of all bridge work for this year can be found online at www.modot.org/northeast/ 2014NEBridgeProjects.htm Bridge work scheduled for Lewis County includes: Route N Bridge: bridge deck replacement at Grassy Creek, located between MO 6 at Ewing and Lewis Co. Road 264-Larch Ave. Road will be closed at the bridge up to 32 days. Route V: Bridge deck replacement at North Fabius River, located just west of Route Z. road to be closed at bridge up to 45 days. Route C: Paint bridge at Durgens Creek, located just west of Route P and just east of Lewis County Rd. 553-Palm Ave. Road will remain open to one lane traffic during work. In Ralls, Schuyler and Warren County, four bridges will be replaced this summer: the South Fork North Fabius River Bridge on Route C in Schuyler County which is 60 years old; and the Hurley Branch and Lick Creek Bridges on Route B in Ralls County; and the Lake Creek Bridge on MO 47 in Warren County, which are all 80 years old. “MoDOT has repeatedly repaired these bridges over the years, but they have reached the time for replacement,” said Paula Gough, MoDOT district engineer. “We know there is a need to improve many bridges and minor routes on our existing system, and we will be con-

centrating on taking care of what we already have over the next several years,” Gough added.

ments on 10 bridges at various locations, and traffic will be one lane during this work.

“Twenty bridges, built from the 1940’s to the late 1960’s, have never had a new deck,” Gough said. “Waiting longer risks having to make emergency repairs with much longer closures and significant deterioration,” she explained. Replacing a deck requires removal of the 10-inch concrete deck and side barriers all the way down to steel, then cleaning and replacing some of the steel. Once the concrete deck is placed, however, it must cure, which seems like idle time, but is a most critical period, when concrete reaches its maximum strength and durability. “Replacing a deck on these bridges will extend the life of bridges ensuring we get the best value of this work,” she added.

Most of the work could start as soon as April, weather per-

mitting, and will continue into the late fall. If you have questions about this or other transportation projects, please call MoDOT’s toll-free Customer Service line at 1-888-275-6636

Arrested for LaGrange Burglary Spree

During full bridge replacements and deck replacement, the roads will be closed, and traffic will be asked to use alternate routes for 30 to 60 days depending on the length of the bridge. Bridges receiving new decks on four lane highways will have one lane closed during construction. The bridge over US 61 at MO 47 in Troy will also be rehabilitated this summer. “Increased traffic has resulted in more frequent occurrences of potholes, cracking, and rutting, requiring increased maintenance and emergency repairs that adversely affect traffic flow,” Gough said. This work will be conducted at night during nonpeak traffic hours. Other work this summer includes painting and expansion joint replace-
