About Young Writers Workshop Program for Ages 12-14

This new in-person NYC-based program invites younger writers to explore a variety of voices, forms and styles. In each class, you’ll read poems, stories and essays and use a variety of writing prompts to inspire new work. You’ll also learn how to talk deeply and critically about your own work and learn to give smart and useful feedback to your peers on exercises and assignments.

No application required. Register at 92NY.org/yww today.

Program for Ages 15-18 Develop your craft through analysis and creative prompts and look deeply and critically at your own work and that of your peers. In the first week, you’ll consider what makes a poem memorable and

how to write arresting images. In week two, you’ll continue your investigation into form and how character and voice are developed and sustained in fiction. In the final week, you’ll study journalism, true crime, narrative history, personal essay and/or podcasting to craft a compelling, thoughtful stories in which the only rule is that you’re sworn to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

You’ll leave with a better understanding of your interests and goals as a writer, an understanding of what it takes to make a career in the literary community, and a highly developed body of new work.

Learn climate change on a global scale and how this impacts your community. Discover your households’ carbon footprint and what you can do to lessen its impact. Understand the history of the environmental movement, the Paris Agreement and America’s role in climate science. You’ll complete a final project that focuses on an ecological issue of your choosing and makes a case for change based on the science you’ve learned. Civil Litigation: Go Behind the Scenes of a Lawsuit In this course, you’ll learn what it’s like to be a lawyer. Look at the types of disputes, the laws that apply and the difference between civil and criminal cases. Learn to argue your case, using evidence and previous legal decisions. Conduct an interview with your client. Develop a research plan. Know when it’s best to go to court or to settle. You’ll do an oral presentation and prepare a formal legal letter presenting the merits of your case.

Women’s Health: Biology and Wellness How does the particular biology of women relate to their health? What diseases affect women more than men? How does the social standing of women impact their wellness and their access to treatment? You’ll get a behind-the-scenes look at the genetics, anatomy and physiology of women, including hormones and reproductive health. We’ll take an in-depth look into select diseases such as endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Global Health: When the World Gets Sick How do infectious diseases start?

This is a 2-week comedy intensive where youth 14-18 years old learn how to write and perform comedy!

In the first week, we teach how to come up with comedy-rich topics and develop them into scripted sketches. In week two, we prepare and rehearse selected sketches from the material from week one to be performed at our end of workshop show: The Sketch Comedy Spectaculum! Sustainable Food Institute Barnard’s 2-Week Sustainable Food and the City introduces students to the U.S food system, examining food production, distribution, consumption, and waste management through four key lenses: agriculture; health, policy and justice; food systems and climate change; and soil health.

Each week, students will explore farms all across the city and New York state to learn hands-on from farmers growing our food. The program will invite experts and professionals from each unit to guide student’s learning experience. Students will take a deep dive into each of these units to imagine a food system that produces food in an ecologically mindful way while supporting our communities and the planet.

Summer Academy at St. John’s College is the best pre-college program for top high school students seeking true intellectual engagement. Summer Academy begins with reading some of the greatest books ever written over the last 3,000 years old; providing a thematic academic experience that will engage students who have a variety of interests. Students challenge themselves by engaging in deep discussions with small groups of their peers in seminarstyle classrooms led by St John’s College full-time faculty.

Summer Academy is uniquely suited for high school students passionate about literature, philosophy, history, politics, law, the arts, and the history of mathematics and science. The weeklong sessions are intentionally interdisciplinary and break down barriers that divide areas of study at most other colleges. Through the readings and discussions, students will draw their own connections between the humanities, social sciences, the arts, and the natural sciences.
