This issue marks an important time in the history of TEE JAYS, as we can proudly announce that some of our most popular styles are in transition to organic, meaning

that in the future, they will be produced in 100 % OCS-certified organic yarns. We feel that as a clothing retailer it is our obligation to contribute to making organic cotton standard and minimizing the harmful environmental effects of clothing production. You can read more about the transition on page 4.

MAKING ORGANIC BASIC As part of our long-term sustainability strategy, this year TEE JAYS will introduce several of our bestselling classics in OCS-certified organic cotton.

Cotton is the most popular textile in the world, and people have been using cotton for clothing production for hundreds of years. As a clothing retailer we have an obligation to help make organic choices available to consumers, so we can minimize the harmful effects of clothing production and contribute to making organic cotton the new standard.

That is why, as part of our long-term sustainability strategy, TEE JAYS is in the process of making some of our most popular styles organic. This year we will be introducing some of our bestselling classics in OCS-certified organic yarns, including our tees and polos. It’s the least we can do to contribute to promoting organic farming, healthier soils, and a better life for the people who make a living growing the most sough-after crop in the world.

THE BENEFITS OF ORGANIC COTTON Over the past years organic cotton has been gaining a footing

in the fashion industry. But what exactly makes organic cotton so much better for our planet? It has to do with the way the cotton is produced. Most importantly, the production of organic cotton doesn’t allow the use of toxic pesticides and fertilizers or genetically-modified seeds and pesticides, which reduces air pollution and is much healthier for the soil, for ecosystems, and for cotton farmers. Organic cotton production also uses 88 per cent less water and 62 per cent less energy than traditional cotton production. And then there are the personal benefits: Being free from chemicals, organic cotton is proven to be hypoallergenic and is much softer and better for the skin than conventional cotton.

TEE JAYS’ new organic cotton styles are all certified according to the Organic Cotton Standard, which verifies the presence of 100% organic material by tracking its flow from source to final product.

ONE STEP AT A TIME We can’t wait to introduce some of our most popular styles in organic cotton, but it doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process, and naturally we don’t support waste – so, styles that are in transition to organic are being sold from our stock from a “first in, first out” principle as new organic styles are being produced.

SHARP SHIRTS FIND YOUR PERFECT FIT

Nothing says sophisticated style like a dress shirt. And nothing beats the feeling of putting on a crisp, clean and perfectly fitted shirt in the morning. The dress shirts is a classic, button-up shirt with a collar and long sleeves, suitable for business and formal occasions. But if it doesn’t fit properly, your look will fall flat.

Here are our tips for making sure your shirts fits the way it should.

When it comes to shirts, a perfect fit is just as important as design and quality.

THE ONE-FINGER RULE Check that you can comfortably fit one finger between the collar and your neck. No more – no less. Then your collar fits perfectly.

KEEP IT TIGHT No matter your size and shape, a classic dress shirt should always fit tightly around your torso. Too much fabric will make it look sloppy and messy, so make sure the shirt is not too big.

THE PERFECT CUFFS The cuffs are a very important part of your shirt and should always be worn properly. If you’re wearing a jacket, the cuffs should extend one half to one full inch past the jacket sleeves.

DISTINGUISHED GENTLEMAN’S RIDE DRIVING DAPPER FOR A CAUSE

Motorcycles and dressy, dapper suits is an unlikely match – or so you might think. Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride unites vintage motorcyclists around the world, who dress up in their most dapper attire and ride together to raise funds for men’s health programs.

It all began with a photo of the TV Show Mad Men’s Don Draper, sitting astride a motorcycle dressed in his finest

suit. Right then and there, an idea began to sprout in the mind of Australian Mark Hawwa. He wanted to arrange a dapper-themed ride for vintage motorcycle enthusiasts to combat the sometimes negative stereotype of motorcyclists while connecting men around the world to raise funds for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health programs.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was born.

The first Distinguished Gentleman’s took place in 2012, where 3000 motorcyclists dressed in their finest and rode for a good cause across 64 cities worldwide. Since 2012, more and more riders have joined and more and more money been raised; in 2019, more than 125.000 motorcy-

clists took part in the ride across 110 countries, from Iceland to South Africa, Venezuela to New Zealand. Today, Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is the largest motoring event in the world, and as of 2019, more than 18,5 million USD have been raised for men’s health.

RIDING FOR MEN’S HEALTH Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride might have started as a fun idea, but it’s much more than that. It’s riding for a cause.

Founder Mark Hawwa wanted to raise awareness of the sometimes overlooked issues related to men’s health and create a men’s equivalent to breast cancer campaigns to support and raise funds for research in prostate cancer. Pros-

tate cancer is the second most common cancer in men, but because there are often no physical symptoms in the early stages, it is important to raise awareness. In 2016, Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride expanded their focus to also raise funds for men’s mental health programs while partnering with the Movember Foundation, which is the only charity foundation tackling men’s health problems on a global scale. Funds raised by Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride are invested by the Movember Foundation in local prostate cancer research and mental health projects.

THE DAPPER DRESS CODE It’s called ‘Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride’ for a reason, and the theme of the event is not taken lightly. Inspired

by Mr. Dapper himself, Don Draper from the TV show Mad Men, the dress code of Distinguished Gentlemen’s Ride encourages a classic, sophisticated style, celebrating vintage gentlemen attire and showing that there’s more to motorcycle culture than leather vests and ripped jeans.

THE HISTORY OF THE POLO SHIRT An epitome of classic elegance, the polo shirt has been a men’s wardrobe stable for decades. But what is it that makes this particular type of T-shirt so iconic, and what does polo have to do with it? Join us as we delve into the history of a true classic: The polo shirt.

Though popularized in the 1920s, the history of the polo shirt begins way back in the mid-1800s, where polo players were first spotted wearing a button-down collar. The traditional polo uniform featured long sleeves and a loose collar, but uncomfortable with how the collar flapped in

their faces, the polo players came up with the idea of buttoning the collar onto the shirt to keep it in place. Inspired by this innovative new collar design, menswear legend John E. Brooks started manufacturing shirts with affixed collars and introduced them in 1896 as “the original button-down polo shirt”. An icon was born.

Although polo plays a central role in its history and not least its name, the soft-collared polo shirt as we know it today was actually invented in the tennis court in the 1920s.

Tennis legend Jean René Lacoste had sought to create a uniform that was more comfortable than the traditional button-up shirts, and in 1926 he was first spotted wearing the now-iconic pique cotton short-sleeve shirt with a loose collar at a US Open match. Shortly after, the rest of the tennis world started to follow suit, and the polo shirt became the standard tennis uniform. Within a few decades, the polo shirt began to spread from the tennis courts and into the

fashion industry and it soon became the epitome of classic, preppy style.

FROM PREP TO RAP In the 1980s, American rappers adopted the polo shirt and took it to the streets, disrupting its image as a preppy style reserved for the upper-class. Today, most menswear brands make their own version of the polo shirt, putting each their sartorial spin on it and contributing to a versatile image that goes way beyond the tennis court.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS What makes a polo shirt a polo shirt? It’s all in the details.

Polo shirts as we know them today traditionally feature a collar and a placket with two or three buttons. Unlike traditional T-shirts, polo shirts are usually made from woven cloth like piqué cotton or interlock cotton. Apart from these standard details, polo shirts can vary in colour, shape, and form.

A 2500 YEAR OLD SPORT Chances are you’ve heard of polo, which is believed to be the oldest recorded team sport.

But do you know what it’s all about? Polo is a horseback-mounted team sport with two teams of four players. Each player has a wooden mallet with which they have to drive a ball across a field and into a goal.

Polo was first played in Central Asia in the 6th century BC, and it later spread to Arabia, China, Japan, and Tibet where the game was refined over hundreds of years. The British were the first Europeans to play polo in the 1800s, after which it spread rapidly around the world. In 1876 it was introduced in the United States, and the first international polo competition took place in 1886.

Relatively small in size and boasting with grand nature experiences, Scotland is the perfect place to plan a getaway all year round. Here are our tips for an unforgettable trip, whether you’re into whisky, natural wonders or historic cities.

Scotland is famous for many things, not least its magnificent landscape and awe-inspiring natural sites. Everywhere you

look you’ll see another natural wonder, from towering rocks and majestic mountains to deep waters and bright green fields for miles and miles.

One of the most popular sites is the Isle of Skye, which is the second-largest of Scotland’s many islands. The scenery is nothing short of spectacular, and you can easily spend a day walking around the stunning landscape and visiting the cute little pubs and art galleries. Scotland’s largest mountain Ben Nevis is another visitor favorite, and rightly so – surrounded by deep glacial valleys, this ancient giant is definitely worth a visit, whether you’re up for a hike toward the top or you prefer to watch it from a distance. And then there’s the legendary Loch Ness, known worldwide for being the home of the Loch Ness monster, Nessie. But the lake is also a striking natural site and the perfect spot for an unforgettable hike.

A TASTE OF WHISKY Scotland is renowned for its whisky, and your trip won’t be complete without a visit to one of the more than 125 distilleries. The country is divided into six whisky regions with each their whisky traditions and tastes.

On the Isle of Sky you’ll find the Talisker Distillery, set on the shore of Loch Harport and with scenic views of the rocky Cuillins mountain range. The Talisker Distillery offers a number of guided tours ranging in price and a chance to get a glimpse into the production process. Also popular is The Glenlivet Distillery, located in a scenic glen and famous for their iconic Glenlivet whisky. Head North to Orkney, and you’ll find the distillery Highland Park, which still has a traditional malting floor and offers several different tours – one of which allows you to taste seven whiskies.

TRAIN RIDE THROUGH THE HIGHLANDS Not so keen on walking? Don’t worry; there are plenty of other ways to take in the breathtaking Scottish nature. How about a train ride through the Highlands? The Highlands is Britain’s largest national park and abundant with deep lochs, romantic castles, mind-blowing peaks, and wild landscapes. And a rail journey is a great way to experience it all in a relatively short amount of time – without breaking a sweat or twisting an ankle.

Considered one of the most scenic trails in the world, the West Highland Line takes you through the wild West Coast, from Glasgow to the cute little port Mallaig. As you

look out the window on the five-hour train ride you’ll see a cinematic landscape unfold and pass through wild areas with no roads or houses for as far as the eye can see. The journey also takes you through the famous Glenfinnan Viaduct, used in the Harry Potter films for the Hogwarts Express. When you reach Mallaig you can grab lunch or dinner, enjoy the great views over Mallaig Harbour and across Loch Nevis, or board a train to the beautiful Isle of Skye.

CITY ESCAPE After a couple of days of drinking whisky and walking in hills, a trip to Scotland’s stunning capital city Edinburgh is

a nice change of scenery. And there’s lots to explore, from ancient historical sites to cozy streets and five-star dining experiences. Don’t miss Edinburgh Castle, an impressive monument located on top of an extinct volcano and with a gorgeous view of the city. Then head downtown for a traditional afternoon tea at the iconic Balmoral Hotel or feast on a delicious brunch at the famous Spoon Café, where J.K. Rowling wrote a large part of her Harry Potter books.

And speaking of Harry Potter, you’ll love a trip to the cozy and vibrant Victoria Street, made famous by J.K. Rowling but also worth a visit due to its quirky vibe and colorful facades popping out among dark, ancient buildings.

WHISKY IN THE COCKTAIL GLASS After a trip to Scotland, what better way to quench your thirst than with an ice-cold whisky cocktail?

Neat or on the rocks is how most people drink their whisky. But the famous brown spirit also makes for an excellent ingredient in delicious cocktails. And with tons of variations, there is no limit to the options. So pull out the dusty whisky bottle and shaker from the bar cart, and get started with these three simple yet delicious whisky cocktails.

Old-fashioned The Old-fashioned is anything but old-fashioned.

An elegant classic with just four ingredients, this is a great place to start if you’re new to whisky.

Whisky Sour The Whisky Sour is a simple cocktail with an exotic twist.

With a smooth and rich texture, this cocktail is sure to impress your dinner party guests.

Hot toddy Your grandmother might have served you a hot toddy when you were sick, but this warm and cozy cocktail can do much more than soothe a sore throat. Warm, soft, and sweet, the Hot toddy is great for entertaining in the winter.

60 ml. rye or bourbon 2 dashes of Angostura bitters 1 sugar cube Club soda

50 ml. bourbon 35 ml. lemon juice 12 ml. sugar syrup 2 dashes of Angostura bitters ½ fresh egg white Lemon zest

25 ml. whisky 1,5 tsp honey ½ cinnamon stick Lemon zest, 1 lemon slice 1 clove

Place the sugar cube in a glass. Add Angostura bitters and a splash of club soda. Crush the sugar with a muddler, add a large ice cube, and pour in the bourbon. Garnish with an orange twist, and serve cool.

Shake all of the ingredients hard (except for lemon zest), and pour into a glass with ice. Squeeze some lemon zest into the drink and garnish with a cherry on a stick and an orange twist.

Whisk honey and whisky together, and pour into a heatproof glass. Add the cinnamon stick, then top off with 100 ml. boiling water. Add a splash of lemon juice, and finish with a slice of lemon studded with a clove.

LET’S GO OUTSIDE HOW TO START RUNNING IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS Beautiful scenery, fresh air in your lungs, and a big doze of vitamin D; nothing beats a run in the great outdoors, and research shows that “green running” is good for both your mental and your physical health. So leave the monotonous treadmill behind, and follow our tips for outside running beginners.

DON’T FORGET TO WARM UP Many people forget to warm up when running outdoors and go straight at it. But your body always needs to warm up, whatever type of exercise you’re doing, and wherever you’re doing it. Start with some dynamic stretches to loosen up your muscles. Then do a five to ten minute warm-up run, for instance up and down some stairs.

CHOOSE THE RIGHT TERRAIN If you’re new to running outdoors, start easy and choose the more soft terrains. Hard terrains like concrete and asphalt are tough on the bones and joints and likely to leave

you sore, whereas soft terrains like dirt trails are easier on your body. As you get used to running outside you can start to implement runs of the harder terrains.

DRESS FOR THE ELEMENTS When you’re running outside, you have to consider the weather and always dress accordingly. If it’s very cold, dressing in layers is the key to keeping the temperature regulated and avoiding a cold. As your body warms up, you can remove layers – but never take off the inner layer, no matter how much you’re sweating. If it’s warm outside, dress in light, temperature-regulating, and sweat-absorbing clothes.

START SLOW Even if you’re an experienced runner and used to the treadmill, running outside will probably feel harder for several reasons. There might be wind resistance, and the terrain might be hilly and bumpy, so it’s more challenging to maintain a steady pace than when you run straight ahead on a smooth surface. Running outside requires more of your entire body, so don’t fell discouraged if you get tired faster than usual.

Don’t be afraid to start slow, run shorter routes, and take a minute to catch your breath if you feel fatigued.
