Year 10 Event Book - Audacious

Page 1

May 28, 2022

What dream is too risky to pursue? Boldness lives in achievement, and also in the attempt.

Whatever your biggest idea, begin it now.

Year 10 will be a triumphant celebration of our past, with an audacious look towards the future.

Let’s move forward unafraid and fearless in our efforts. We will be brazen, we will be brave, we will begin.

Year 10. 1,164 days in the making.

We began planning Year 10 on March 21, 2019 when Rip City Management reached out and offered to host our event. We persevered through a global pandemic with a first reschedule from June 6, 2020 to May 29, 2021. Then, a second reschedule to December 31, 2021, and a third and final reschedule to today, May 28, 2022.Through the past 3+ years, our organizing team remained optimistic, determined, and steadfast to see this event through. There is nothing quite like being together in person for TEDxPortland. There is a palpable energy and electricity that is hard to describe. You have to be here in the seat to “feel” and experience it.

It has taken tremendous fortitude and audacity to get to this day, but we are delighted that it is finally here, and that you are with us on this momentous occasion.

Sit back and enjoy the most inspirational, educational day of the year for our city.

Enjoy

History of TED

Gene Sandoval 2012 Speaker
Adam Garcia 2017 Speaker
Vidya Spandana 2015 Speaker

Established in 1984, TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, and Design—three broad subject areas that are collectively shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline. The diverse audience of leaders, scientists,

creatives, and philanthropists is almost as extraordinary as the speakers, who have included Brené Brown, Bill Gates, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Frank Gehry, Bryan Stevenson, Sir Richard Branson, Philippe Starck, Jill Bolte Taylor, and Bono.

History of TEDx

Julia Niiro 2019 Speaker
Alison Roper 2014 Performer
Redray Frazier 2017 Performer

TEDx is part of a revolution in global education made possible by local organizers wanting to engage their communities. Established in 2009, over 50,000 TEDx events have been organized worldwide with 100,000,000+ TEDx talks curated.

Every week, in over 135 countries, people are coming together to pursue Ideas Worth Spreading. We seek to build partnerships that will surface, promote, and support great ideas. The concept is simple: create an immersive environment where prominent local organizations, thought leaders, and key enablers from vastly different fields can crossfertilize and draw inspiration from unlikely places.

TED Commandments

01. Dream big. Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. Reveal something never seen before. Do something the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world.

02. Show us the real you. Share your passions, your dreams … and also your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure as well as success.

03. Make the complex plain. Don’t try to dazzle intellectually. Don’t speak in abstractions. Explain. Give examples. Tell stories. Be specific.

04. Connect with people’s emotions. Make us laugh. Make us cry.

05. Don’t flaunt your ego. Don’t boast. It’s the surest way to switch everyone off.

06. No selling from the stage. Unless we have specifically asked you to, do not talk about your company or organization. And don’t even think about pitching your products or services or asking for funding from the stage.

07. Feel free to comment on other speakers’ talks, to praise or to criticize. Controversy energizes. Enthusiastic endorsement is powerful.

08. Don’t read your talk. Notes are fine. But if the choice is between reading or rambling, then read.

09. End your talk on time. Doing otherwise steals time from the people that follow you. We won’t allow it.

10. Rehearse your talk in front of a trusted friend… for timing, for clarity, for impact.

TEDxPortland

Misson, Vision, Goals

Welcome to our 10th event. We received our first TEDx license in 2009 and it took us 14 months to pull off our first event at The Armory. We grew to the Portland Art Museum, the Keller Auditorium in 2014, and now the Moda Center in 2022. Our 60+ member volunteer team works year-round on this experience to deliver Ideas Worth Spreading to the Rose City and beyond. Our team goals center on speaker quality and content, premium event management, partner appreciation, and inspiring Portland to think and do.

Mission

To spread ideas. TEDx is part of a global TED community, welcoming people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world. We believe passionately in the power of ideas to change attitudes, perspectives, and lives.

On TEDxPortland.com and TED.com, we’re building a clearinghouse of free knowledge. A community of curious souls to engage with ideas and each other, both online and at our events.

Vision

Create a world-class experience that inspires Portland to think and do.

Goals

To organize the most educational and inspiring day of the year.

To bring our community together to celebrate people, partners, and place.

To develop a core team organizing dynamic that fosters love, passion, and commitment to one another.

To be the most innovative TEDx event on the planet.

Opportunity Tickets

A trailblazing first in our TEDx global community, we are thrilled to give away 500 “Opportunity Tickets” in partnership with our dear friends at Arnerich Massena, without whom this experience would not be possible.

Through this program, 25 non-profit organizations were nominated and received 20 tickets each.

The driving factor to change venues from the Keller Auditorium to the Moda Center for Year 10 was to increase access and equity. Not only does this improve entry-level price points for purchase, but it opens up complimentary seats to people who have never before experienced the inspiration of this gathering.

TEDxPortland wants to thank Arnerich Massena for their unwavering support and belief in our community. The organization’s spirit of inclusivity is the driving force behind this initiative.

Arnerich Massena builds lasting legacies in service of a greater good by investing with vision, passion, and purpose. Founded in 1991 in Portland, Oregon, an independent, employee-owned firm has worked since then to be a model of corporate citizenship, from unparalleled client service to an uncommon investment approach to their commitment to the community. Focused on client service and intentional investing, Arnerich Massena creates portfolios that reflect the top-tier research and collaborative expertise that they have cultivated over three decades working with private clients, foundations, and endowments.

Arnerich Massena is a Certified B Corporation®, a global movement using the power of business to build a more inclusive and sustainable economy, and was named a Real Leaders Top Global Impact Company in 2021 and 2022. Arnerich Massena is dedicated to seeking opportunities that resonate with clients’ values, objectives, and the outcomes they seek.

Community service and support are fundamental to Arnerich Massena’s philosophy, vision, and culture. This is exemplified by giving back in many ways, including serving with volunteer time, donating dollars, and offering collaboration and support. Arnerich Massena is the inaugural Oregon sponsor of Rock the Street, Wall Street, a non-profit organization that provides financial and investment education to high school girls to spark their interest in finance. A proud partner in helping the Oregon community thrive and investing in the next generation.

Alumni John Waller

Meet John Waller, a beloved TEDxPortland Alumnus who presented on our stage in 2012 with Ben Canales. They received a rousing standing ovation after their talk, which featured the world premiere of their Uncage the Soul Productions short film, “Finding Portland.”

In October 2020, John was diagnosed with stage 4 colorectal cancer with metastasis to his liver. He then began a long journey to heal from cancer; in addition to chemotherapy, his treatments included walking 5 miles per day— no matter what—and dramatic adjustments to his diet and lifestyle.

The support John received from the community was astounding. More than 175 people joined him to walk one million steps in 90 days. It was then that he shifted his thinking and reframed his goals. “Healing from cancer” seemed too limiting, like a reactive motivation to something he didn’t want in his life. He instead asked, “How healthy can I be?” The goal: proactively focus on what he can do, what he can control, and what he does want: health and vitality.

John’s new approach can easily accommodate a community of other participants. The question “how healthy can I be?” is relevant to all of us because it holds the unlimited potential to produce dramatic improvements in our

physical and emotional health. If John can shift his mindset, what are the rest of us capable of?

Thank you for being an incredible example to all of us, John. With love and admiration, we stand with you and look forward to our next walk in the woods…

Thank you for also introducing us to Frank Moore.

Alumni Frank Moore

In 2014 Frank Moore graced our TEDxPortland stage with his talk, A Perfect Life & Love. He remains the only TEDxPortland speaker ever to receive a standing ovation before and after his talk.

On January 23, 2022, Frank Moore passed away surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was 98 years old, just seven days shy of his 99th birthday. Frank was a decorated veteran who stormed Utah Beach on D-Day and was presented with the French Legion d’Honneur for the sacrifices he made during World War II. A legendary fisherman, builder, and proprietor of the Steamboat Inn, he was also a fierce advocate for river preservation, known for helping write the Oregon Forest Practices Act.

In 2019, Congress passed legislation to designate the Frank and Jeanne Moore Wild Steelhead Sanctuary—100,000 breathtaking acres in the North Umpqua River Basin. He built his log cabin with his bare hands along this river and lived there for over 50 years until it burned in 2020 during the Archie Creek fires. Frank is survived by the love of his life and wife of 80 years, Jeanne, and three of his four children.

Frank lived in the moment; when you were with him, nothing else seemed to matter but the conversation you were sharing. He was a treasure, a hero of a human, and a true inspiration.

Thank you, Frank, for the immeasurable impact you made on so many.

May you rest in peace forever.

Frank’s celebration of life is being held today— May 28, 2022, at 2:00pm in Roseburg, OR

Signature Sneaker Nike “TED Force 1”

The Legend Continues

The Air Force 1 has defined shoe culture since the moment it stepped onto the court in 1982. It continues to be a fashion staple thanks to clean lines, a strong midsole, and new and classic colorways in low, mid, and high-top styles. Originally created by Bruce Kilgore, it was the first ever basketball shoe to feature Nike Air technology—it has revolutionized the sneaker industry forever.

For Year 10, what could be more audacious than the “TED Force 1”?

Premium pebbled leather and metallic silver swooshes with matching “10” on the heel. An Audacious insole and TED red hints throughout. “Spreading Ideas” on the white lace tips with a second red pair to switch it up. Debossed Ideas Worth Spreading on the outer heel with “1,164” on the inner heel—symbolic of how many days it took to get here. Lastly, a shout out to Portland Gear on the inside tongue label. We love our city!

Arguably, our best offering ever (although the 2014 AJ1 “Perfect” may have something to say about this).

Thank you to Brendan Hughes, Mike Brewer, Venkatesh Alagirisamy, and Erin Moreno for making this collaboration possible.

Signature Dehen Sweater Varsity Team

Founded by William Peter Dehen in 1920, Dehen Knitting Company produces classic and traditional U.S. heavyweight apparel. Keeping true to their humble yet pioneering beginnings in Portland, Oregon, they are a family business known for long-lasting quality, workmanship, and rugged styling. In the 1920s they began knitting varsity and collegiate sweaters for student athletes. Today, well into their second century, Dehen continues a tradition of heavy duty, quality manufacturing while actually producing their goods in Portland. Truth is built into every garment Dehen makes.

TEDxPortland became incredibly inspired after Benjamin Dehen-Artaiz graced our stage in 2017 for our Spectrum theme. His Talk was about Resurrecting the American Dream. We have since collaborated and partnered to outfit all of our TEDxPortland alumni speakers / performers in a custom Dehen varsity sweater.

It is a gesture to show our alumni how much we cherish them, their ideas, and their continued involvement in our community building efforts.

There are three stripes on the sleeve to symbolize TED: Technology, Entertainment, and Design.

We are very proud to outfit our TEDxPortland family in these one-of-akind sweaters and share with you the “Heavy Duty, Old School Truth” that is Dehen 1920.

Portland Gear Apparel

From city-wide scavenger hunts and “just be kind” campaigns to iconic custom “TED Red” hats, Portland Gear has provided creative apparel collaborations for our volunteer team and attendees for 8+ years. Their infamous VW bus made its debut in 2014 on 3rd Avenue and we have never looked back. This year we are thrilled to provide Portland Gear + TEDxPortland reflective trucker hats, covid masks, hoodies, zip up windrunners, and one-of-a-kind “ideas socks.” For all that they do for the Rose City—we are thrilled to also include them in the execution of the TED Force 1 Nike Shoe!

Jimi Hendrix

The greatest Rock ’n Roll photo ever taken—as voted on by readers of Rolling Stone Magazine.

Ed Caraeff was at the right place at the right time—the Monterey International Pop Festival in 1967.

He was 16 years old.

“Save some film for this Jimi Hendrix cat” Ed was told. And that’s when he knew he was in for something special. Here’s how Ed described the moment that made Rock ’n Roll history: “It was a wild, raw performance. As the set finished, Hendrix got down on his knees with lighter fluid and matches, and lit his guitar on fire. I was so close to him I could feel the heat from the flames.”

The photos shared in today’s Hendrix tribute performance are the serendipitous result of a scrappy, talented kid with a camera meeting a Rock ’n Roll icon. That led to intimate time on the road touring with Hendrix and visually documenting the journey.

Ed went on to shoot other legends, creating album covers for Elton John, Dolly Parton, Little Richard, Steely Dan, Jim Morrison, Neil Diamond, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Barry Manilow, Hall & Oates, Marvin Gaye, and many more!

Ed is in attendance today with his family. Thank you, Ed. Your indelible work has changed the landscape of Rock ’n Roll, forever.

Limited edition, one-of-a-kind posters will be on sale during lunch hour and happy hour. They are autographed by Tyrone Hendrix and Ed Caraeff. All proceeds support Year 10 ticket scholarships.

Thank you to our friends at Iconic Images for this collaborative partnership.

Anthem Art Show

Piano. Push. Play. and TEDxPortland are both celebrating 10 Years.

Synergies aligned to produce an audacious exhibit of music and artistic expression.

• 10 Pianos

• 10 accompanying pieces of art

• 10 different artists

Displayed in the Fair-Haired Dumbbell for the month of May, these pianos are now here today displayed outside in The Commons for all to enjoy. They will then travel to Pioneer Square in June and then be placed all over the city.

Piano. Push. Play.’s mission is to make pianos available to anyone who wants to play them. They work with local piano companies to rescue old pianos that are still in great shape. Every Summer, beautifully designed pianos are put out into the wild to let anyone who wants to enjoy the experience of making music. “Please play me” on each piano is an invitation for experienced musicians and passersby alike to create music in a public space. When Summer is over, pianos are placed in schools and community centers for everyone to play year round.

The University of Oregon, specifically the School of Journalism and Communication in Portland, was one of our first partners in 2011 and helped get TEDxPortland off the ground. In 2012, The University of Oregon became our presenting partner and has continued their support ever since. We are so thankful for their support, not only with our main event at the Moda Center / Theater of the Clouds but also with past TEDx SALONS that are held throughout the year. They are also the hosts for our TEDxYouth@Portland event. With heartfelt appreciation we thank Jane Gordon, Matt Roberts, and Richie Hunter—your team has nurtured a wonderful community connection.

We have been at this for 13+ years and Year 10 has taken 1,164 days to produce.

Thank you for being partners since day one.

Our core organizing team finds 2022 inspiration in this quote from journalist and 2018 TEDxPortland / UO Alumna Ann Curry: “It’s time to be bold about who you really are.”

To our friends at Rip City Management— where do we begin…

You stood by us through three reschedules when the entertainment industry was turned upside down and inside out by the pandemic. Thank you for believing in us and stretching our imagination in 2019 to be AUDACIOUS at the Moda Center / Theater of the Clouds. You were instrumental in helping us achieve our wildest dreams with the largest indoor TEDx the world has ever seen.

Because of your leadership and unconditional support we not only survived, but thrived in coming out of this historic time.

With special thanks to Amanda Mann, Michael Betts, Mario Milosevic, Dewayne Hankins, Courtney Gifford, Tim Halloran, Kevin Merlet, Justin Brady, and Dan Scheinman.

KEX is the social hub and HQ for Year 10. Partner Appreciation Night, Speaker Dinner, lodging, and the infamous After Party are all held here. We are grateful to the leadership, resiliency, and genuine hospitality from the entire KEX team. Thank you to your entire team and what you do for the Rose City.

KEX first started in 2011, when a businessman and a set designer met at an abandoned biscuit factory in a strange corner of Reykjavík while scouting a location for an upcoming film. While the movie never got made, the vision for the set remained. The film treatment soon became the outline for a business plan to create a real place to hang out, where travelers and locals could both feel at home. They bought the biscuit factory, and KEX was born. (KEX means “biscuit” in Icelandic.) As more friends, craftspeople and experts joined the team, KEX became what it is today: a design-focused space and a social hotel where people from anywhere can gather to eat, drink, and be inspired. In 2019, KEX opened its first U.S. location in Portland, Oregon on a bustling corner in the Central Eastside. Furnished with salvaged materials and found objects from around the world, KEX Portland is an organic concept that blends a vintage industrial feel with an eclectic, contemporary touch. KEX incorporates the comforts and thoughtful design of a boutique hotel to become a community gathering place, creative hub and destination for travelers and locals alike. The heart of KEX is its ground floor bar, Pacific Standard, a modern West Coast drinking and dining hall. Pacific Standard celebrates the hotel bar by aiming to be a living room for the city: a destination for international travelers, but also a treasured haunt for local regulars.

KEX’s rooftop bar, The Sunset Room, opens this summer.

TEDxPortland Year 10 is in the fourth and final year of our creative relationship with our admired agency of record. Including the pandemic and three reschedules, it has been a six plus year experience together. The team at Enjoy is a natural extension of our core organizing team. We admire them as professionals and cherish them as friends.

They create the objects, spaces, and experiences that captivate imagination. From theme ideation and campaign photo shoots to digital execution and event book design, it has been a thrill and distinct privilege to work with them. With special thanks to Emily Boisvert, Matthew Anderson, and Ian Coyle, we are humbled and grateful to be on this journey together—we love you.

Nike’s purpose is to use the power of sport to move the world forward. Our TEDxPortland organizing team is inspired by their belief in a fair, sustainable future—one where everyone thrives on a healthy planet and a level playing field. Nike has been with us as a partner from day one and we cannot imagine this journey without them. Thank you for continuing to inspire us and for supporting our creative endeavors.

Our mindset of perseverance and resiliency through the pandemic was rooted in the iconic slogan “Just Do It”— because, we knew, together we would see this through. Thank you for having our back!

And our 13+ year NIKE collaboration— and this event—would not have been possible without the unbeatable passion and commitment of Michael Doherty, now retired. Michael, we love you!

With special thanks to Mike Brewer, Andrea Perez, Brendan Hughes, Lara Anderson, Venkatesh Alagirisamy, John Hoke, Peter Achterman, and Tinker Hatfield.

Congratulations on your 50th anniversary. The best is yet to come...

This amazing Portland family business elevated our production value to new heights when we first started working with them in 2012. In 2014, we introduced our first volume of the award-winning TEDxPortland Event Book. These books are now cherished collectibles, finding homes on personal library shelves, coffee tables, and ottomans. 8,000+ Year 10 silver Event Books is a feat! All the printed collateral you have seen throughout this campaign is made possible by the amazing team

at Premier Press. From yard signs and vinyl install building wraps to Jimi Hendrix posters and outstanding studio photography—they do it all. In particular, we’d like to thank Juli Cordill, Eric Farrara, Andy Gordon, and Jean Kelleher for being models of professionalism and generosity.

We are continually amazed by our friends at OCF as they inspire Kindness Across Oregon. Neighbors fighting wildfires together. Delivering food in times of need. Standing up for each others’ rights, hopes and dreams. Our communal hardships have rekindled in us a great, unifying strength—kindness. So elemental, yet so brave. Awakened by an urgent need for connection and compassion. Kindness has inspired us to listen. To learn. To lend a hand. To take care of each other. Now we have the opportunity to keep it lit. Let’s not let it smolder. Let’s fan the embers in our hearts. Let’s keep kindness at the forefront of our lives, and live as open examples of it.

Kindness inspires kindness. And here, in our Oregon, that is what makes us… NeighbORly

We never thought TEDxPortland would grow into what it is today. It was 700+ people at the Armory in Year One. We grew to the Keller Auditorium in 2014 and it was the largest TEDx in the United States with 3,300+. Today, as we gather in the Moda Center / Theater of the Clouds, we are the largest indoor TEDx in the world with 8,000+ for Year 10.

Thank you to the leadership at Lane Powell for earnestly looking out for the organization’s best interests as things have developed over the years. From formalizing our initial organization, to supporting our non-profit incorporation, we are eternally grateful to the legal counsel (and friendship) of Jeff Wolfstone, Lisa Poplawski, and Carter Mann for their thoughtfulness and stewardship.

Victory Creative Group continues to raise the bar for our creative standards. Their team of motion, graphic, web, and social designers dream, dare, and do the impossible. They have influenced our digital reach to a global scale, produced our annual highlight films, and meticulously worked to remaster our speakers’ talks for the rest of the world to enjoy, forever. Our relationship runs deep, dating back to 2009 when first discussions began of bringing a TEDx “ideas event” to town. Not simply an event or a conference, but an experience—to deliver the most inspirational, educational day of the year for our city.

Heartfelt thanks to the leadership team at Victory for pushing us to audacious new heights—we love you: Mario Soriano, Jelyssa Madrid, Keith Leinweber, Aalum Jaffer, and Ben Che.

A very special thank you to Co-founder and Board Member—Mark Starkey. Through thick and thin, you have been a voice of reason and stoic reliability. Your relentless pursuit of excellence is instilled in the DNA of our organization.

Umpqua Bank has been our bank since day-one. Sincere thanks to the innovative leadership of Halley Baars, Tyler Bullen, Damon Knight, and Eve Callahan. Times have dramatically changed, but their support of our community building efforts have not. Together for better—they personify this with their people and their actions.

They continue to be instrumental partners with our organization, helping non-profits, businesses, and communities build economic vitality.

TEDxPortland proudly banks with Umpqua (shout out to Jennifer Reyes, our local branch manager, we love you!)—we feel most banks treat customers like customers. They treat us like family.

Thank you to the incredible team at Meyer Pro. The production and execution that you see here today is a result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.

When there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved. Meyer Pro personified this. They assembled a dream team with Carlson Audio, Stages NW and Outlaw Lighting to deliver Year 10. With special thanks to the leadership, grace, and unconditional support of Gayle & Steve Meyer. Lastly, Matt O’Dell and Conrad Burmester—we applaud you and are grateful for your guidance and mentorship.

Every fall, a 30-person TEDxPortland organizing team travels to Timberline Lodge for an offsite retreat to dream about, and create, our annual event. We are continually inspired to dream and do at 7,000 feet.

We’d like to extend special thanks to Sally Kohnstamm and the folks at Timberline Lodge for making this trip possible. This Oregon treasure is such a special place. The magic found there touches everyone who enters the lodge.

Our TEDxPortland organizing team firmly believes that wellness is the realization of our true potential to live a healthier, happier, and more successful existence. We are in constant pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyle that lead to a better state of holistic health and wellness.

Please take the following wellness tenets to heart—we share them with our organizing team and with you.

We are all Humans Being.

To this end, we could not be more fortunate to be partners with Knot Springs. They thoughtfully nurture our volunteers, alumni, and current Year 10 speakers & performers. The Knot Springs experience will leave you recharged and ready to achieve your true potential. We encourage you to visit their Wellness Social Club in the Yard building at the Burnside Bridgehead, and immerse yourself in wellness and good times.

For the past 5 years Daimler Truck North America has been a fabulous partner in our community building efforts. Their support has lifted our main event to new heights. Many will recall the Pride truck on 3rd Avenue outside the Keller Auditorium in Year 9 where attendees could engage with our DJ and the 3,000+ crowd from this magnificent vehicle.

However, we would like to shift your attention to the incredible innovations that are happening right here, down on Swan Island at their North American HQ. Technologies that we should be incredibly proud of!

The Autonomous Technology Group at Daimler Trucks has been working on a vehicle platform that aims at transforming highway safety and freight efficiency. The leadership team of engineers and technologists have been working on class-8 semitruck called the Autonomous Ready Cascadia that is capable of being driven on US highways autonomously.

Why Autonomous?

The answer to that is two-fold:

• The most compelling reason why this team is dedicated to this mission is to enhance highway safety. Every year, we lose over 5,000 of our loved ones due to accidents involving heavy trucks. Daimler is working relentlessly towards bringing that number down. Accident-free driving is a shared vision that we want to achieve.

• The second reason is to enhance freight efficiency. The demand to move freight continues to grow and Daimler wants to provide sustainable solutions to tackle this challenge. We are excited to showcase this ground-breaking technology at future TEDxPortland events.

The pandemic taught us that online learning has never mattered more. It is critical to productivity, growth and evolution. OpenSesame’s vision is a world where everyone can easily access the training they need to advance their purpose. Their mission is helping companies develop the world’s most productive and admired workforces.

They harness the power of technology to help organizations of all sizes deploy training and learning to do remarkable things—in every industry. The people behind their products make this a noteworthy Portland company to believe in and trust. With special thanks to Joshua Blank, Stuart Finn, and Hallie Janssen.

SkyPoint Cloud manages TEDxPortland’s data and we feel it is important to share this open letter from their Founder & CEO. We believe their platform and solutions offering could transform your business.

Data Privacy is a Human Right

Our personal information is interconnected with our individual freedom, dignity, and integrity. Our date of birth, skin color, and medical history are data points linked to us as human beings. This information is our personal property and it should be protected.

The information age has become synonymous with the era of convenience. We get anything we want, faster than we ever thought possible. Along the way, we as consumers have handed over our most precious commodity…our personal information.

The information age began in the 1970s, then the Wild West of data privacy began during the early days of the internet. But it wasn’t until the past decade that personal information became a hot commodity.

Digitalization created a stream of consumer data, allowing organizations to commandeer personal information for their benefit without assuming any responsibility. Rarely did consumers know what information was being collected or how it would be stored and used.

Eventually, there was an awakening.

Consumers realized what used to be private property had become a free-for-all on the internet. They noticed businesses were monetizing personal data without their permission. Consumers demanded to exercise their right to consent to the collection, storage, usage, and sales of their data.

Governments stepped in and passed data privacy laws, like GDPR and CCPA. An ever-growing, ever-evolving list of data privacy legislation continues today.

Now we are living in the age of data privacy. However, modern-day data privacy isn’t about putting personal information in a lockbox. It’s about striking a balance between sharing our “private property” and enjoying personalized experiences.

We share personal data when we enter a shipping address so an online retailer can deliver an order right to our doorstep. Do you want to give that up? Because I don’t. Prioritizing data privacy will be the key to delivering more value to customers while earning their trust to build long-term relationships.

Respecting data privacy and implementing proper processes are of strategic value to businesses. Doing so increases brand equity, strengthens the brand’s reputation, cultivates customer loyalty, and gives businesses a competitive advantage.

Privacy is a fundamental human right recognized in the UN Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and many other international and regional treaties.

The information age has turned data privacy into one of the most important human rights issues of our time. Because data privacy impacts anyone who shares their information with corporate and government entities…data privacy impacts all of us.

Sincerely,

to unlock deeper, more meaningful relationships with their customers and patients. Tisson is a firstgeneration immigrant who is passionate about
