2021 holds three key priorities for me: firstly, to ensure our local community recovers from COVID-19; secondly, to keep delivering on infrastructure and; thirdly, to advance big visionary projects for the future. On our recovery from COVID-19, I’ve been running a ‘Go Local First’ campaign in support of local businesses and have announced a series of grants for local companies. Meanwhile, I’m working with local community groups to secure them more funding.

This amazing original house is a piece of living history from the pioneering days in Buderim. The home was built using pitsawn cedar and beech by J.K. Burnett, an influential, original resident of Buderim. Supplied by the Buderim Historical Society.

HISTORICFAIRFAX Built in 1882, John Burnett’s residence has since been turned into Buderim’s museum, known as ‘Pioneer Cottage’. The area was very different in 1878 when John Kerle Burnett and his wife Ann purchased 20 acres of forested land on this site. At that time there were fewer than twenty houses on Buderim, with only three or four in the central part of the town and there were no shops.

On infrastructure, I’ll be seeking to ensure ongoing delivery of our region’s three biggest infrastructure projects which are all majorityfunded by the Federal Government. These include upgrades to i) the Bruce Highway between Caloundra Rd and the Sunshine Motorway, ii) Maroochydore Rd and Mons Rd Interchanges and iii) the North Coast Rail between Beerburrum and Nambour.. On visionary projects, I have three key objectives: to prosecute the case for fast rail between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast; to progress our bid to host the 2032 Olympic Games; and to bring Federal, State and Local Governments together to strike a long-term plan for South-East-Queensland.
Holy Cow! $1 million for Fresh Milk Innovation Fresh milk will soon have a 60 day shelf-life thanks to Federal Government funding to support an innovative Sunshine Coast company’s plans to develop their world-first patented technology for processing milk. The $1 million Federal Government Accelerating Commercialisation grant will help Naturo build a pilot manufacturing plant in Coolum, creating local jobs and expanding opportunities for the export of fresh milk to the world. Minister for Industry, Science and Technology Karen Andrews recently visited the Coast to make the announcement and meet with other local manufacturers who are interested in applying for funding under the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy.
The food and beverage sector is one of the six priority areas the Morrison Government is supporting to harness Australia’s capability, drive our economic recovery and build future resilience. “The Sunshine Coast is the most innovative region in Australia and this world-first food preservation technology was invented and developed right here on the Coast,” Ted O’Brien said. “The future for our region’s growing food and beverage industry is bright and has the potential to create more local jobs. “This world leading technology, together with the new Sunshine Coast International Airport and a series of Free Trade Agreements, expands the market and enhances the export potential for local producers and manufacturers,” he said.
Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Federal Member. Best regards

Go Local First Small business is the glue that keeps a community together. Show Sunshine Coast businesses your support by going local first!. Ted has been running his Go Local First campaign since December 2019.
Thirteen local groups have shared in $150,000 worth of grants under the Federal Government’s Communities Environment Program including Coolum and North Shore Coast Care which recently hosted a Wallum Wildlife Workshop attended by Ted O’Brien and Assistant Minister for Environmental Management Trevor Evans. “It was great to show the Minister how Coast Care’s $20,000 grant was being put into action,” Mr O’Brien said. MANUFACTURING $1.5 billion over 4 years to help Australian manufacturers scale up, compete internationally and create jobs.
Policy Q&A I see that Ted chaired the Inquiry into the problem of feral and domestic cats in Australia. What does this mean for cat owners? ANSWER: Cat ownership will definitely not be banned in Australia, but cats have a huge impact on our native wildlife which must be addressed. My report recommends ways to better manage stray and domestic cats while tackling the dire problem of feral cats. I’m proposing an initiative that involves a roll-out of safe haven fenced areas to protect Australian wildlife.
$60,000 to Cut Energy Bills Three Sunshine Coast businesses have shared nearly $60,000 of Federal Government funding to reduce their energy bills and transition to more energy efficient technology. Ted announced the funding to Seaborne Clothing in Marcoola, the Woombye Pub, and Accura Group in Nambour as part of the Energy Efficient Communities – Small Business Grants program. These grants are part of the Government’s $3.5 billion Climate Solutions Package designed to alleviate financial pressures on small business.
Toad Race Raises Money for Young Mums The annual Nambour Cup toad race raised $1,300 for the Burnside State High School’s highly successful Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring (STEMM) program.
Sports and Community Groups can now apply for Federal Government grants for projects they are planning this year. BUILDING BETTER REGIONS FUND - Infrastructure projects: Grants of $20,000 to $10 million for capital projects. - Community projects: Grants of $5,000 to $1 million for events and activities to strengthen our community.
A total of 15 thoroughbred cane toads contested the ‘race that stops the region’ which is an annual fundraiser founded by Ted to help teenage mums stay in school.
Applications for Building Better Regions Fund close 5 March.
Every toad in the race was sponsored locally with ‘Rogo’s Rocket’ taking out the gold.

SAFE PLACES FOR WOMEN
Legislation to provide Sheds with Deductible Gift Recipient (DGR) status has now come into effect. Once a Shed registers DGR status with the ATO, its supporters can claim an income tax deduction for donating $2 or more.
Construction is underway on the Maroochydore Road and Mons Road interchanges. The $301 million project to improve safety and capacity is being 80% funded by the Federal Government. Work should be completed in late 2022, weather permitting.
Additional safe places for women and children escaping domestic and family violence will be available on the Sunshine Coast following a $2.6 million Morrison Government Safe Places grant announced for Coast2Bay Housing Group.
