Lites event at Michigan International Speedway, the focus is on glowing displays, family fun, and creating memories that even the youngest trick-or-treaters can be part of.

The nearly two-mile drive-thru attraction invites visitors to experience colorful Halloween scenes from the comfort of their own vehicle, offering an alternative to haunted attractions and jump scares. It’s a tradition rooted in an idea that dates back decades.

“We did Halloween before we did Christmas lights — back in the ‘80s,” said John Spink, owner and operator of Halloween Nite Lites. Spink explained that, back then, they had a Halloween hayride with actors.

Christmas Nite Lites began after that. And, over the last couple years, they thought they could do something similar for Halloween.

That vision became a reality after months of preparation. “We built displays eight months before we were going to open,” Spink said. “The idea was to create a not-scary Halloween drive-thru for families with younger kids.”

Today, families wind through scenes of illuminated pumpkins, playful Halloween characters, and festive spectacles designed to capture the fun of the season without the fright. With no scary actors or haunted displays, the attraction offers a relaxed experience that grandparents, parents, and young children can enjoy together.

Halloween Nite Lites runs Thursdays through Sundays from Oct. 1 to 23, before expanding to nightly operation from Oct. 25 to 31. Hours are 8-10pm, rain or shine, with admission charged per vehicle.

For visitors who want a different perspective, Halloween Nite Lites also offers train rides along the same illuminated route.

Their two trains, which run continuously, operate on the same evenings as the drive-thru and provide an up-close look at the displays while guests relax and enjoy the ride.

“It helps that the driver doesn’t have to worry about where to drive,” Spink said. “You’re up closer to the displays, so you can just sit there and enjoy the show.” He added that they prefer folks sign up online if they wish to board a train. Because the trains are open-air and not heated, guests are encouraged to dress warmly.

Seating is limited, and each rider must have an individual ticket.

Visitors can also experience the attraction on foot during the Halloween Nite Lites Walk on Saturday, Oct. 24. Participants will stroll the illuminated route while enjoying trick-or-treat stations set up along the way.

Whether families choose to drive-thru, ride the train, or take part in the Halloween walk, the goal remains the same: creating a fun, welcoming way to celebrate the season together. It’s a tradition that blends the excitement of Halloween with the simple joy of spending an autumn evening surrounded by colorful lights and smiling faces. n

Let's Gather continued...

Just beyond the welcoming side porch, a 40-foot Amish-built steel windmill stands sentinel over the dozen or so buildings on the property that harken back to a time before big box grocery stores and suburban sprawl.

The iconic windmill also serves as the logo for Let’s Gather, a vendor market and showcase of homesteading from bygone eras that will take place at the Mottices on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 10am to 4pm. The event is free and open to the public, with a $5 charge for parking.

Together with their daughter Heather Mottice Rathburn, who is also Let’s Gather’s event organizer, the Mottices welcome visitors to peruse the wares, goods, and talents of over 35 local vendors and artisans who create unique handcrafted items. Demonstrations of pre- and early industrial means of food preparation, laundering, homesteading, woodworking, blacksmithing, and country life in the 19th and early 20th centuries will take place throughout the day.

Rathburn noted that food trucks, kids activities, and live music will help make the atmosphere festive and family-friendly. Docents from the Manchester Area Historical Society will be on hand to answer questions and engage discussion about the history on display in what the Mottices have made into something of a living museum.

At the time, the Manchester property had recently been subdivided from a farm (the original barn still stands across the road) and held just the Mottice’s house and a small shed — the milk house, where large cans of fresh cow’s milk were stored in a time before mechanical refrigeration.

The chicken coop, pig pen, and a barn — raised the old-fashioned way, with many hands helping — all still stand, though Bob is now a retired hobby farmer who no longer keeps animals.

The extensive flower and vegetable gardens that he and Sandy tend, however, follow time worn traditions such as the method of planting together what indigenous people called “the three sisters” of corn, beans, and squash. The Mottices can the fruits of their labors and enjoy what they’ve grown year-round.

ogan Autrey’s interest in preserving old buildings begins close to home.

The house where he grew up sits just off North Union Street on West Logan in the heart of Tecumseh’s historic district. At the opposite end of the street stands the Musgrove Evans House. Built in 1826, it is the oldest house in Lenawee County and one of the oldest in Michigan. Historic houses are part of the neighborhood — and anchor Autrey’s life.

On one of the hottest days of the summer, with a heat index over 100 degrees, Autrey walked through the workshop he and his father, Sean, rebuilt behind the family home. The spacious, two-story structure stands on the footprint of an old barn. Although much of the original building had deteriorated, the Autreys saved what they could.

Exterior board-and-batten siding was removed, flipped, milled, and reused on the workshop’s interior.

Original joists became headers above the doors. New trim was milled to match the profiles found on the old barn, while salvaged doors and lumber were worked into the building wherever possible. “We’ve tried to save some of the remnants of the original barn,” Autrey said.

Autrey is an architectural designer, project manager, and licensed builder. His father has worked in painting, contracting, and restoration for about 30 years. Together, with a core of professionals who also are lifelong friends, the Autreys comprise New Hue Restoration + Design, based at 310 W Logan. The workshop was only the beginning of the tour.

Despite the heat, Autrey led the way about a block north toward Shawnee Street, where he pointed out a home whose front porch New Hue had completely rebuilt. The crew reconstructed the porch in a style

true to the original house, restoring a feature that once again looked as though it belonged there. From there, it was a short, sweaty stroll to the iconic Italianate house on North Van Buren Street, where New Hue renovated the exterior.

Both projects show the company’s larger purpose: preserving not simply one old house but the character of the neighborhood around it. “Growing up, I was super into building things with Legos and stuff,” Autrey said.

“Architecture always stuck with me.”

After graduating from Tecumseh High School in 2014, Autrey attended the University of Detroit Mercy, earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees through an accelerated fiveyear architecture program. His master’s thesis brought his studies back to Tecumseh.

Autrey examined how the former Tecumseh Products property might be redeveloped and integrated into the community rather than treated as an isolated piece of vacant industrial land. He also explored how existing routes connecting Tecumseh with Clinton and Adrian might be expanded to make the city more pedestrian- and bicyclefriendly. “What do we do with all this land?” he said of the former factory site. “What if we went away from just the commercial side and had a more integrated community there?”

A semester studying in Warsaw, Poland, also shaped the way Autrey thinks about architecture and preservation. He spent four months walking, riding buses, and living without a car in a city rebuilt after World War II. Some of Warsaw’s architectural details were recreated using drawings that

survived the destruction, including work completed by students.

The experience helped him see how buildings, streets, and transportation shape the way people live together. “This is the one space we get to live most of our life in,” he said of residential architecture.

“Good design is a key part of having a healthy built environment.”

The office work he did after college didn’t really satisfy his need to be more directly involved. “I need to be a little bit more hands-on,” he said. He joined his father and began focusing on preservation.

New Hue’s work now includes historical consulting, condition assessments, window restoration, custom millwork, porch reconstruction, and extensive residential renovations.

A recent Indian village project in Detroit included recreating more than 50 wooden window sashes after vinyl/ aluminum replacement windows obscured the original features. The crew uncovered old brick moldings and located the original placement of double-hung and casement windows.

For homeowners who have purchased an old house and do not know where to begin, Autrey and his crew assess the structure, identify original features and later alterations, and develop a priority list.

Water always comes first. “If we’re getting calls about water, you deal with that, and then all the aesthetic things come after,” he said.

Autrey believes old buildings offer something much of today’s construction does not. He and his friends sometimes describe a plain new building as “a Revit building,” referring to the architectural design software. “That just looks like someone designed it in Revit and then plopped it in real life,” he said. “There’s nothing special about it. There’s nothing that makes you feel connected to it.”

Older homes carry that connection — to the people who built them, the neighborhoods that grew around them, and the people entrusted with caring for them now. “The greenest building is the one that’s already built,” Autrey said, repeating a familiar preservation maxim.

Clinton Fall Festival September 25-27

or more than five decades, the Clinton Fall Festival, which takes place this year Friday-Sunday, Sept. 25-27, has marked the arrival of autumn with small-town charm, bringing generations of families together to celebrate the season. Few people have witnessed its evolution as closely as Doris Kemner.

Kemner has been part of the festival for all 52 years of its existence. She first became involved as a vendor when the event was in its infancy. “The festival started in 1972 as sidewalk sales downtown and included a few community organizations,” she said. “At that time, I worked a table alongside other members of a church group.”

Over the years, her role grew, along with the festival itself, eventually leading her to become its director. Kemner is quick to emphasize, though, that putting on an event of this breadth takes a lot of volunteers, an engaged board, and many active committees.

Although longtime favorites continue to draw crowds, organizers also look for ways to keep the festival fresh. One new attraction visitors can look forward to this year is a putt-putt golf experience on the upper elementary school lawn. In addition to the attractions in town, the festival also offers activities at Tate Park.

But the festival goes beyond providing a fun-filled experience for attendees, as proceeds from the event make their way into a scholarship fund that supports Clinton graduating seniors as they pursue their next educational step. “Last year, we contributed $10,000. And, over the last 25 years, I would say that we’ve provided $150,000 to scholarship recipients,” said Kemner.

Kemner has enjoyed her front-row seat to the growth of the festival, watching generations of families return year after year. Many visitors who attended as children now bring their own children and grandchildren, making the festival as much about reconnecting with neighbors as it is about enjoying the attractions. “The festival brings people into town, and folks use it as a means to reunite with family and friends,” Kemner said.

TWICE OVER The start of a new school year isn’t just exciting for students heading back to classrooms, it’s also a time of anticipation for the teachers they’ll find in those rooms. We reached out to some area educators to learn a bit about their inspirations, what they wish others understood, and the rewards of their chosen career. A common thread running through their answers is an awareness of the impact they have on students’ futures and the associated joy of making a difference in the lives of the young people in their charge.

In my 40 years of teaching, the one thing I wish that more people understood is that, as a teacher, we have a very unique responsibility to help raise the next generation. Along with the academics, we teach so many life skills that are essential for our students to grow up and be the leaders of our society.

Teaching is so much more than just teaching. It is more about listening, forming relationships, and being a lifelong learner. After 30 years of teaching, I still feel like the more I know, the less I know.

Learning about students, what can be done to enhance their learning, and the best practices for teaching them is an ongoing learning adventure in the life of a teacher.

I wish more people understood the dedication and time teachers invest every day. Their role is to shape future generations by providing the skills and knowledge students need to succeed. Regardless of the subject they teach, educators help build tomorrow’s leaders, making their work essential and too often taken for granted.

It’s more than preparing students for a career. We have the privilege/responsibility of helping shape the adults they will become. We teach technical skills, work ethic, communication, and problemsolving. We become trusted adults who believe in our students, often before they believe in themselves. Success isn’t measured by certifications or job placements — it’s seeing students grow into confident, responsible adults who make a positive impact.

Teaching is so much more than an 8:30-3:30 job, following a textbook, or having summers off. We carry our students’ joys and heartbreaks, worry about them long after the final bell, and make hundreds of on-the-spot decisions each day. We might not always get every decision correct, but those decisions are made with the best of intentions.

I decided to become a teacher when I realized I wanted to inspire others to discover the power of knowledge and the opportunities education can create. My first classroom experience confirmed I had found my calling. I quickly built relationships with students and found that helping them overcome challenges and recognize their potential also pushed me to become the best version of myself.

As the youngest of three, I was homeschooled by my mom through kindergarten and part of first grade. Watching her teach my older siblings, being surrounded by books and learning materials, and tagging along on trips to the teacher store sparked my love of learning. It’s safe to say my mom was the first teacher who inspired me to pursue education.

I would say that building positive relationships with students and helping them grow as young people is the most rewarding aspect of my teaching experience.

Cheerleading looked a little different then. “There was not nearly as much gymnastics. Thank goodness, because I was not good at that,” she said. One squad of nine or ten girls cheered throughout the year for football and basketball, attended camp, and competed under coach Judy Jackson, who took over the program when Hammond was a freshman.

The members of that squad went on to a variety of careers. One became a judge, another a nurse, others became teachers, and one worked as a television news anchor.

Hammond became a doctor. A 1991 Tecumseh High School graduate, she is now a pediatrician with ProMedica’s Adrian Pediatrics.

She cannot remember a time when she was not interested in medicine. “My mom, Jan, liked to get out the first-grade picture that you had to draw to show what you wanted to be,” Hammond said. “I think mine might have technically been a nurse, but it quickly, as I got a little older, shifted to doctor, and that’s just always what I said I wanted to be.”

She said it might seem a bit odd since there are no nurses or physicians in her family. Hammond’s brother, Matt, may have helped strengthen her interest in medicine, however. He broke his arm when he was 4 and later broke his pelvis and leg in a three-wheeler accident, spending about a month at Bixby Hospital and undergoing several surgeries. “But I think I was even interested before that,” she said. “Anything medical always caught my attention.”

Math and science came naturally to Hammond. She remembers teachers Victor Stevens and Carl Novak in math, along with Jim Curth in science and Susan Ellis, as important influences. “I loved all my teachers,” she said.

After high school, Hammond earned an undergraduate degree in physiology from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. Northwestern held a special appeal because Hammond had lived in the Chicago suburbs from kindergarten through sixth grade, when her father Jim was working for Tecumseh Products.

The family returned to Tecumseh when she entered seventh grade.

“I was always going to go back and live in the suburbs of Chicago,” she said.

Instead, she came home to Michigan after college and attended the University of Michigan Medical School, her first choice.

The road to becoming a physician was demanding. In addition to completing required undergraduate courses, Hammond studied for the Medical College Admission Test and later faced a series of licensing exams during medical school and residency. “There’s always some big exam looming,” she said. She

completed her pediatric residency at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor and gave birth to her first daughter, Riley, at the end of her second year. “That was a bit of a challenge but well worth it,” she said.

She explained that medical training can sometimes feel as though life has been placed on hold while friends finish college, begin careers, and start families.

Becoming a mother during residency taught her things no medical textbook could. “Every pediatrician, in my opinion, should have a kid because that’s the best learning experience there is,” she said. “Those are the questions that parents ask you, not always the detailed things that you learned in medical school.”

Hammond has worked in private practice and as a pediatric hospitalist, caring for newborns and children admitted to the hospital. She especially enjoys primary care because it allows her to form lasting relationships with families. “I get to watch families grow,” she said. “You see the nervous parents when they have their first baby and have all those new-parent questions. Then, by the second, third, or fourth child, it’s cool to see how they learn along the way and become more relaxed and really enjoy their family.”

She also enjoys seeing her young patients outside the office — shopping or at community events. She noted that children are resilient and that most recover quickly from illnesses and injuries. When they do not, however, finding the right treatment becomes even more important. “Nobody wants to see a child be sick or hurt in any way,” she said.

As teenagers, Hammond and her brother were certain they would never return to Tecumseh. “We could not wait to get out of here,” she said. She initially lived in Saline and worked in Canton but returned to Tecumseh in 2005.

Having children changed the way she saw the small town she once wanted to leave. The pet parade, downtown activities, and having family nearby took on new meaning. Hammond hopes her story reminds local students that growing up in a small town need not limit their ambitions. Her education helped carry her from the cheerleading sidelines to medical school and eventually back home, where she now cares for a new generation of Tecumseh-area children.

“You can still be anything you want to be,” she said. “There are people from Tecumseh High School who have done all sorts of different things. You can do whatever you want with a Tecumseh education.” n

This fall, the theater is kicking off its new performing arts season with physical and technical transformations to the space that are going to positively impact how audiences will experience live shows. fundraising, city funding, and state grants, the TCA has pulled off a major modernization. Amy Slupe, executive director, provided the inside scoop on all the goings-on at the venue.

Back in May 2025, the theater launched a campaign to raise $10,000 to replace the original 1981 stage curtains and rigging systems. The local community blew past the goal to bring in a whopping $132,000. And major assists came from the Lenawee Community Foundation, the Maurice and Dorothy Stubnitz Foundation, the Kiwanis Club of Tecumseh, a generous anonymous donor, and the Michigan Arts and Culture Council.

With the donations, the TCA was able to do way more than just swap out the curtains. They fully replaced the old stage rigging suspension chains and moved a bulky projection screen that had been blocking a scenic batten for decades, opening up additional space for more engaging, larger stage setups.

“We are not simply preserving a building, we are investing in a place where artists can create, audiences can connect, and generations of families can continue making memories together,” said Slupe.

The stage now features brandnew performance curtains on a smooth track system. Behind the scenes, the dressing rooms got a total top-to-bottom renovation completed in June, supported by the City of Tecumseh’s Capital Improvement Funds. Visiting artists now have a welcoming space to prepare before a live show. And a Yamaha B3 rehearsal piano now awaits artists backstage, allowing musicians to warm up on a quality instrument before going on stage.

All of this momentum is leading into the next big phase: replacing the original 1981 incandescent stage lights with state-of-the-art LEDs. The theater will be launching ways for the community to chip in and help fund this lighting phase during the upcoming season.

To break in the new-and-improved setup, the season officially kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 7:30pm, with “Comedy Night, featuring John Heffron.” For those who need a good laugh, this is the best way to spend an evening. Heffron has been in the comedy game for over 30 years, won NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” and has a stacked resume with appearances on “The Tonight Show” and “Chelsea Lately,” in addition to Comedy Central and Netflix. He does brilliant, relatable sets about marriage, family reunions, social media, and just navigating the weirdness of being an adult.

Right after that, the TCA is bringing a pivotal piece of music history to town on Saturday, Nov. 7, at 7:30pm, with “Trouble Man: A Tribute to Marvin Gaye.” The show stars Billboardcharting artist L. Young as Marvin Gaye, bringing the smooth vocals, passion, and stage presence that made Gaye a legend.

Young has performed with the likes of Stevie Wonder and Gladys Knight, and he’s backed by an eight-piece band

to play hits like “Got to Give It Up” and “What’s Going On.” Billboard artist Crystal Starr joins Young as Tammi Terrell to recreate iconic duets like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” and “You’re All I Need to Get By.” With Gaye’s legendary Motown roots in Michigan, a hometown tribute is bound to be a special show.

While season subscribers to the TCA get first dibs at seats, individual ticket sales open to the general public on Thursday, Sept. 3. Grab them online 24 hours a day at thetca.org, or hit up the box office on Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 5pm.

Who would guess that one could find a piece of the Lebanese paradise village called Kornayel in Tecumseh? Pita Delight Grill

owner Ali Alaawar not only brings the unmatched culinary flavors of his hometown thousands of miles away, but also gives his patrons an idea of the generous, proud, hospitable spirit of the Lebanese people.

Kornayel is a mountainous village known for its pine forests, gorgeous lakes, and summer activities and festivals. Ali describes growing up there with fond memories of nice weather; beautiful scenery; incredible food; and a warm, tight-knit community of family and friends. On a typical day, Ali’s school schedule, studying, and playing with neighborhood friends were interrupted only by his mom’s amazing homecooked meals, enjoyed at the family table with his parents and four siblings where they talked about life.

Traditional dishes like tabbouleh, kibbeh, fattoush, kafta, and hummus were often on the table, and it wasn’t long before Ali’s passion for learning how to cook took hold. As a young teenager, his mom began to show him how to combine fresh, healthy ingredients with distinct and delicious

flavors like lemon juice, garlic, tahini, parsley, olive oil, sumac, and mint.

After finishing school in his hometown and completing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Europe, the path of his life took shape with a visit to the United States.

Almost 25 years ago, Ali was invited to come to this country to visit an extended family member who owned a restaurant.

Ali loved it here and saw that there were many opportunities in the food industry that would allow him to combine his passion for cooking with the freedom and independence of business ownership.

So the hard work began. Business ownership became a highly sought after goal for Ali. Feeling fortunate to have been raised and educated with the bar consistently set high and in a country that has always shown strong resilience, Ali worked toward this goal and achieved it.

Business started small with the purchase of a food truck. Ali traveled all over Michigan to fairs, festivals, farmers markets, and beyond, introducing place after place to the most addictive garlic sauce, teaching folks how to pronounce the word “shawarma,” and offering pickles different than his customers had ever tasted before. Soon, local businesses were requesting that Ali bring his food truck to their parking lots in order to complement their menus, patrons began asking where they could find him next, and private event

bookings were filling the calendar.

Throughout experiencing this success, though, one place in particular began to feel like a home away from home. Tecumseh’s Farmers Market, Appleumpkin Festival, and beautiful downtown area drew a crowd of truly warm, welcoming people who were especially excited and open to the food that Ali so proudly delivered. He happily found himself having regulars who were hungry for more and decided that this should be the place to continue to build the dream. The next goal on the horizon: a brick-and-mortar restaurant on Chicago Boulevard. Ali turned a doll collector’s store into a fully functioning restaurant, and Pita Delight Grill opened its doors in October of 2022.

Experience has been Ali’s teacher and restaurant ownership surely comes with inevitable and mighty challenges, but the reward is greater than he could have ever dreamed. They often make an effort to pass by the line (where Ali is sure to be standing daily, preparing food) as they come and go to say “Hello” and compliment him on a meal well made. Ali, in turn, pays close attention to making sure each meal is deliciously presented and knows his customers very well: their jobs; their families; their health; and, of course, their orders. He has memorized hundreds of his most frequent customers’ usual choices.

There is a famous Lebanese saying: “Min ouyouni.” It literally means “from my eyes.” It is used to express “I will do it for you with joy” and explains perfectly Ali’s intrinsic desire to work hard and serve people. His vision has always been to invite people to sit, share food, and join in the community’s daily life. This is what Ali was raised on and what he set out to recreate in Tecumseh, and he feels so blessed by the support that he has received by the open-armed

and open-minded community that has allowed him to achieve it.

And, in case you’ve ever wondered why Pita Delight Grill’s famous hummus, garlic sauce, and lentil soup feel like a mom’s warm hug, although she is still living in their family home in Kornayel, it is Ali’s mom’s recipes that he is handing down to us and treating us to each day.

So often, we see countries in the news, places “over there” that seem distant, thousands of miles away.

And they are, on the world map, but not so much when it comes to our shared humanity.

Lebanon is one of the names often appearing in headlines. But, beyond those, there is life — people raising families, passing down traditions, and dreaming dreams. The stories of individuals from those faraway lands are a reminder that, amid all of our differences, we can find common ground.

hen it comes to the game of cornhole, everyone can get in on the action — it transcends generational divides, allows for varying skill levels, and encourages good-natured competition. It’s hard to resist the community vibe of the sport when talking to folks like Chris Wilson, who runs cornhole at Station 300 in Saline. “All age groups are welcome,” he said. “Anyone can participate, and the comradery is hard to beat!”

Cornhole at Station 300 celebrated four years this past June. After acquisition of the former Maplewood Lanes bowling alley in 2022, the new owners converted an outdoor storage facility into a bar and patio area, including five cornhole courts. All they needed was someone to run organized play, so Wilson stepped up.

On Thursday nights, league play ensues. And Saturday nights, April through November, come alive with the Saline Cornhole Saturday Points Series. This open, drop-in tournament welcomes young and old, rookies and veterans, to toss bags through the air, hoping — or skillfully ensuring — that those bags reach their target board or, better yet, land in the designated hole.

“Saturday’s tournament offers a social competition. It’s welcoming and encouraging.

Everyone’s working to do their best and have fun,” said Wilson.

“Cornhole is all about family,” added Wilson’s daughter, Makennah, who has been playing since she was 12. “And when you throw with someone, you become family.” She also addressed the misconception that it’s just casually tossing a bag.

“Getting the bag in the hole is tougher than it looks,” she smiled.

“It takes a lot of concentration.”

Though there are outdoor lights at Station 300, the tournament nights wrap up as it gets darker and the weather turns cooler. But, as cornhole among the elements begins to wind down in Saline, cornholers are not left out in the cold. They head to Manchester to participate in the year-round indoor cornhole played each Thursday in the Klager Elementary School gymnasium. “It’s socially based,” said organizer Mike Bemis. “Just as in Saline, all are welcome.” The format is six-game Switcholio, a blind-draw round robin where each player gets a new partner for every game and is ranked individually on the leaderboard. “It’s free and a great way to practice and have fun,” observed Bemis.

According to Austin Myers, the force behind Milan Cornhole, which hosts Sunday afternoon games

in The Campfire Grill parking lot in Milan, “Playing cornhole is a great way to connect. And it can be easily incorporated into other community events.” Myers founded Milan Cornhole in 2023 and, since its inception, it has been active in the area, “running fundraisers and providing a safe space for all skill levels of cornhole.” Beyond Milan, Myers organizes events throughout the area, including in Tecumseh, Deerfield, Chelsea, and Saline.

Other nearby venues hosting cornhole throughout the year include Lenawee Recreation/​ZZ’s Sports Bar & Grill in Adrian, which invites players to take part in its summer league, and the Tecumseh Parks & Recreation Department, which holds a doubles league for five weeks during the winter months.

Details regarding league and points series play at Station 300 are available on Saline Cornhole’s Facebook group page. To locate and keep up to date on all local opportunities to play cornhole, Wilson suggests using the Scoreholio phone app, which shows the locations of tournaments. “We use it for cornhole, but it includes 20plus sports, from darts to ax throwing,” he said. continued...

ax Benedict, Adrian College’s first and, to this point, only cornhole coach, wasn’t quite sure the college was serious when it posted an ad to fill the position. But he applied anyway, memories of throwing bags in the barn with his dad and his love of the game driving him.

Well, that, and some encouragement from Adrian College senior and future cornhole team member (now alumnus), Griffin Reynard, and his brother, Austin, who had lobbied then-athletic director Mike Duffy to fund a cornhole team, with Austin, founder of Killshots Cornhole in Adrian, offering to support the program — contributing bags and boards.

With his application submitted, in November 2021, Benedict was invited for an interview with Duffy. And, on Christmas Eve, the latter called Benedict and asked if he wanted a gift.

Benedict gratefully accepted. From that moment, the newly christened head coach has been leading the first-ever intercollegiate varsity cornhole team.

Now entering his fifth year, Benedict, a Tecumseh native, recalled the early days of building the team

adrian college cornhole from scratch and of hitting the road to tournaments countrywide, seeking to recruit top-notch cornhole players, both men and women. His massive travel schedule narrowed, though, when he began noticing that the same possible recruits were at each event. As the novice program grew, the pursuit shifted. “After two years of grinding, now they reach out to me,” Benedict said, with a mix of pride and relief.

In the first year of the program, there were 10 athletes on the team.

For the first two seasons, they played random tournaments before becoming “official.” They also found themselves playing the role of trendsetter. During the third season, the Bulldogs took their place in collegiate meets, facing some tough rivals, including the Winthrop Eagles, a top-tier team and national champions located in Rockhill, S.C., and within walking distance of the American Cornhole League (ACL) headquarters.

For Benedict, building a team means hard work and setting an example. In addition to running practices and drills, he handles travel, scheduling, and ensuring the young players “stay out of trouble.” As in any sport, cornhole is part mental, so Benedict also dabbles in a bit of sports psychology. And witnessing studentathletes’ maturation is gratifying. “I see them initially react in frustration to pressure but then grow calmer over the years,” he said.

Each year since its inception, the Adrian cornhole team has headed to Myrtle Beach, S.C., to take part in the ACL National College Cornhole Championship (NCCC). And, in January 2026, Alex Weaver, a junior, made history by winning the Collegiate Singles National Championship, the

first individual national title for Adrian College’s cornhole program. Weaver defeated the reigning Winthrop University champion and advanced to face Cannon Hatcher from Northwestern State University in Louisiana in the finals, which were streamed live on ESPN+.

“I’m proud to bring home a national championship for Adrian College,” Weaver said in response to his win. “I hope this marks the start of a new chapter for Adrian College and the collegiate cornhole scene. None of this would be possible without my teammates, coaches, and family.”

Though the team has seen success over the years, Benedict still found himself waiting for it to reach “legitimacy.” And, now, Weaver’s championship plaque hangs inside the athletic display case, a reminder of just how far Benedict and the team have come.

The Adrian cornhole team does their share of traveling to competitions, but the public will have a chance to attend a home tournament at Adrian College on Saturday, Sept. 19. And, instead of Myrtle Beach, the next ACL NCCC will be held closer to home, in Brighton, Thursday, March 18-Sunday, March 21, 2027. So local fans can come out and cheer on the team.

As for Killshots continuing involvement, they remain the primary sponsor of the college’s cornhole team, especially for home tournaments. Since Austin founded the business in late 2019, it has grown from a small, homebased operation into a major supplier of professional cornhole equipment, now occupying a state-of-the-art 30,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Adrian. n

efore a piece from Rosenberg Woodworking reaches a craft-show table, it has passed through careful cuts, glued seams, turns on the lathe, and hours of sanding. For Mike Rosenberg, who owns the Tecumseh business with his wife, Tammie, that work grew from a lifelong interest in a family-supported craft rooted in skill and hometown pride.

Woodworking has been part of Rosenberg’s life since childhood, but the lathe was the tool that truly sought

Pieces are built layer by layer, with each ring or wedge cut, glued, pressed, turned, and finished by hand.

Cups are shaped from oak, charred inside like a whiskey barrel, and fitted with a custom bottom. Lighthouses are built in a similar segmented style from pine or cedar, sometimes with 80 pieces.

The materials carry a sense of place, from woods gathered during trips through Michigan and Ohio to varieties from around the world.

Choosing the right wood is where much of the work begins. “A board may hint at a pattern or color, but its full character appears only after it is turned, sanded, and finished,” Rosenberg explained. Appreciation for natural beauty runs through segmented bowls, turned Christmas trees, bourbon cups, crosses, lighthouses, and bangles made from wood such as wenge, purpleheart, and black palm.

The lighthouses began as a family project while Rosenberg was teaching

his daughters how to glue pieces for bowls. A vase turned upside down suggested a new shape, and customer ideas later helped the design grow with taller forms and lights.

Tammie’s displays invite people to slow down, ask questions, and pick up the pieces at shows. That in-person connection lets customers see the grain, feel the finish, and hear how each piece was made.

Local shows feel like a homecoming, and Michigan Wares, housed in Grey Fox Floral, keeps that connection going year-round.

“They’ve been absolutely wonderful to work with,” Rosenberg said. “They have great vendors, and they’re often looking for more.”

That connection has led to memorable projects, including a sixfoot outdoor cedar lighthouse with a turning light commissioned by a customer who first saw Rosenberg’s work at Michigan Wares. Built to hide a pump near the lake, the piece shows how Michigan Wares supports its vendors by connecting customers with handmade work and the people behind it.

For Rosenberg, what began as a hobby remains rooted in gratitude — for family, hometown support, and the craft itself. “It’s a family thing,” he reflected.

r. Kim Scutchfield, DVM, opened SweetLife Veterinary Services, an at-home pet euthanasia service, in 2023, after 11 years of operating The Cat Doctor veterinary practice in Monroe. SweetLife, now her sole practice, is something Dr. Kim (as she prefers to be called) said she feels very blessed to be able to do.

Dr. Kim was able to conduct home visits about once a week for pet euthanasia at The Cat Doctor, where she observed “pets usually much more at ease in a familiar setting, surrounded by family.”

But the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath placed heavy burdens on veterinary practices nationwide and home visits became difficult to manage.

Then, when Dr. Kim lost her own brother in 2023, she found herself re-evaluating her priorities and made the decision to pivot her veterinary practice to SweetLife.

The tight connections forged between pets and people mostly bring joy and companionship. When a pet is suffering, though, families can struggle with how best to ease the pain. Many veterinarians, Dr. Kim noted, are apprehensive about recommending euthanasia as people can feel very differently about

People make the best decision they can with the experiences they know, and they do it out of love,” she assured. “My job is to make the process as low key and low stress as possible.”

For those considering pet euthanasia, she offers consultations and encourages multiple family members to read The Ohio State University’s “Honoring the Bond” articles (available online) and take its “How Will I Know” scaled worksheet as a way for families to get a big picture sense of their pet’s quality of life. If their choice is to set free their pet’s pain, Dr. Kim works to accommodate families in accordance with their needs and wishes.

Referring to her patients as “friends,” Dr. Kim usually sees cats and dogs, but she has helped a bearded dragon, a snake, a chicken, rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, birds, and other small pets. She has also helped a 300-pound pet pig, but large animals are generally not part of her practice.

At the appointment, Dr. Kim arrives to the home in street clothes to avoid any white coat syndrome (pets can have this too) and spends some time making sure everyone is comfortable. Families choose the setting — sometimes outside on the deck or in the yard, or within the home in a bed or other favorite spot. The pace is relaxed. Even if the euthanasia is the result of behavioral issues (for example, a dog who has

attacked someone), Dr. Kim believes in honoring the pet and making a good memory while treating it with dignity and gentleness so that the experience is as pain free and peaceful as possible.

At the end of the appointment, using a pillow in a basket for smaller pets or a blanket on a stretcher for larger ones, arranged as if sleeping, Dr. Kim can remove the pet from the home for cremation as well as offer fur clippings or paw prints as mementos. Basic services start at $450 and information regarding financial assistance is available on SweetLife’s website.

Based in Carleton, SweetLife has a large service area, ranging from the Toledo to Detroit to Ann Arbor areas and most everywhere in between within a 45-minute drive, including Adrian, Onsted, and Tecumseh.

Appointments can usually be made within one to three days, seven days a week, with at least a 24-hour notice. As a solo provider, Dr. Kim has a regularly updated recording regarding availability and an autogenerated response to messages until she can personally respond.

“So many families say they wish they would have known about this with an earlier pet,” Dr. Kim remarked. “You don’t have to put yourself together for the clinic setting, the horrible drive there, and the empty drive going home. It works really well for a lot of people in such a personal setting. It’s a more kind and peaceful approach.”

eaceful Passings in Manchester, founded in 2019 by Alexandra Brown, DVM, offers in-home pet euthanasia to pet owners throughout Lenawee, Jackson, and Washtenaw Counties.

Dr. Brown, who also works as an emergency veterinarian in Ann Arbor, has years of experience with end-of-life care in clinical settings and knows those cases are handled with care, compassion, and professionalism. But the at-home deaths of her own pet and those of her parents’ pets allowed her to personally experience just how much “a difficult situation can be made a little easier” in the home environment. “It provides a much smoother, more comforting, and less stressful situation for all involved,” she said.

Peaceful Passings typically sees patients who are suffering from terminal illnesses such as incurable cancer, have seriously debilitating mobility issues, or are otherwise experiencing severe decline in quality of life. For pet owners considering pet euthanasia, the decision is rarely easy or straightforward. Dr. Brown counsels, “There is no one right way to know for sure when it’s time.” But she encourages people to ask themselves, “What does forward look like?”

At-home pet euthanasia may not be for everyone or feasible in all end-of-life situations, but for those considering it, Dr. Brown recognizes four main benefits.

First, many pets experience stress during car rides, within clinical settings, or both. Being attended to within the comfort of their own familiar environment can ease anxiety. Second, the logistics of getting a pet into the car, whether due to the size or mobility of the pet or the physical capabilities of its owner, can be a challenge avoided. Third, at-home euthanasia allows for a much more personal experience that can take place in a favorite room, bed, or outdoor space, soothed by preferred toys, treats, or blankets. Finally, it permits a larger number of loved ones to be present, including other pets, surrounding their furry family member with love, offering more time and space during the pet’s final moments than what a clinical setting can provide.

Once clients consult with Peaceful Passings, if the decision is made to move forward, then short-term scheduling is arranged (help is usually available within 24 hours, though not typically emergency service). During the appointment, which usually takes 30-60 minutes, Dr. Brown spends time with the pet and discusses each step with clients. When clients are ready, the pet may be given a sedative or anti-anxiety medication before a final injection that quickly and painlessly stops the heart and breathing.

Dr. Brown can also assist with burial on-site or transport for cremation.

The base fee for at-home euthanasia is $400, with additional costs for various cremation services or keepsakes.

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is never easy, and Peaceful Passings’ website offers several resources to help families through their grief. For Dr. Brown, the work is hard but gratifying, her face notably softening as she remarked, “It’s amazing the difference you can see in providing as much comfort and calm as possible.” n

voices that try to inject self-doubt into her mind. “It calms my overthinking, and people feed off the resulting positive energy,” she said.

Ry’s is a microbakery (a small-scale, home-based bakery).

But expansion is never far from Rylee’s mind. Though a relatively new business owner, she has already increased her offerings via investment in a Simply Bread Oven, which incorporates stone and steam decks that “get really hot” and allow for more uniform baking, producing consistent texture and a golden crust. The oven sharply decreases baking time too, giving Rylee the ability to bake up to 15 loaves at once in about 40 minutes, versus the approximately 10 hours it takes baking two loaves at a time in a conventional oven.

The results speak for themselves. Rylee shared that her most popular sour dough loaf flavors include chocolate chip, cinnamon raisin, and everything bagel. “My favorite is the OG sour dough bread — the classic loaf,” she added.

She has also received praise for her focaccia and rave reviews for her chocolate chip cookies, “with just a bit of flaky sea salt on top to balance the sweetness.” And Ry’s Bakery has become known for its specialty cakes as well, with Rylee putting her signature creativity and care into each one.

ylee Cox’s baking roots run deep. She grew up watching her mother, aunt, and grandma in the kitchen, creating birthday cakes and baking cookies. The passion they put into measuring, mixing, and decorating greatly influenced her. But it wasn’t just their culinary skills that left an impression, it was also the images of the strong, independent women doing the baking.

Over time, their self-reliant leanings became ingrained in Rylee, until she eventually developed the full-fledged entrepreneurial spirit she possesses today and that inspired her to open Ry’s Bakery in 2024. That’s the year she built her bakery cart, stocked it with baked delights, and took her place amid the vendors at the Tecumseh Farmers Market.

While Rylee still takes her cart on the road, this current season saw Ry’s Bakery upgrading to one of the market’s merchant sheds, through a collaboration with Musgrove + Company — hot coffee and quality baked goods forming a natural partnership.

Being a regular at the farmers market is particularly meaningful to Rylee, a 2023 Tecumseh High School graduate. Aside from the at-home feeling of the venue, another benefit of setting up shop there week after week is the privilege of building a following. Open Podium Poetry takes place the third Thursday of each month, from 7 to 8pm, by the Tecumseh District Library fireplace. Local poet Linda White has been facilitating the gatherings for about a year now. Sessions typically last one hour, with six to eight attendees usually taking part.

During the meetups, members take turns sharing their work and offering feedback, advice, and encouragement. Also, each month, the group selects a random word as a prompt to inspire a new poem for the following session. All are welcome to attend, whether joining in as a poet or simply to listen.

Each month, the Cookbook Book Club at the Clinton Public Library invites patrons to check out a featured title, test out new recipes, and gather to share a meal. or half a century, The HOPE Community Center in Adrian has been more than just a place offering programs for adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. It has been a community where friendships are formed, opportunities are created, and a sense of belonging is found. As HOPE celebrates its 50th anniversary, the milestone not only honors five decades of enriching lives and breaking stereotypes but also celebrates something equally remarkable: the power of community support.

“Hope is really unique because most communities have no equivalent to a place like this,” Development Director Mary Martin said. “For 50 years, it’s been community funded, so the fact that this center exists is a real testament to the foresight and compassion of the community.” Unlike many organizations, HOPE receives no government funding; charges no fees; and relies entirely on grants, donations, and volunteers.

“HOPE is genuinely here for members and their families to utilize however they need,” Executive Director Katie O’Hotzke said.

HOPE was founded in 1975 after Jim Jones, executive director of Call Someone Concerned and Crisis Center, noticed many adults with developmental disabilities visited not because they were in crisis but because they needed companionship. At the time, opportunities for these individuals to participate in community life were limited.

With support from Civitan of Lenawee, the first HOPE Recreation Drop-In Center opened in Adrian in 1976. As membership grew, the organization moved several times before constructing the 14,000-square-foot facility on Baker Street in 1988.

Today, HOPE (Helping Others through Projects and Experiences) serves more than 100 adults ages 18 and older.

Members choose from a variety of daily programs designed to build confidence and social connections, including art, cooking, sports, social activities, and life skills, as well as favorites such as bingo, karaoke, gardening, and board games.

The center’s gymnasium, game room, craft room, kitchen, computer room, patio, and other spaces help members build important life skills, confidence, teamwork, independence, and communication skills.

“Members get to make choices, which is super important,” O’Hotzke said. “If a member doesn’t want to participate in a program, our staff is good about offering other options.”

trips. Members also volunteer with Meals on Wheels, The Humane Society, Kiwanis, and Share the Warmth.

The center also promotes inclusion through its Disability Sensitivity Workshops. Designed for people unfamiliar or uncomfortable with interacting with people with disabilities, the workshops provide a welcoming environment to ask questions and learn.

Participants are then invited to visit the center to help foster understanding through everyday interactions.

“We really want to try to break down the stigma, get people thinking differently and create more acceptance in the community,” O’Hotzke said. “Who better to teach you about disabilities than individuals with disabilities?”

Martin adds that the COVID-19 pandemic helped many people better understand the isolation adults with disabilities often experience. “I don’t think a lot of people thought about it until it

happened to them,” she said. “A lot of the time, disabled people are socially, emotionally, physically isolated, and they don’t have anywhere to go once they leave the school system. The fact that our community recognized this need and created a place like HOPE 50 years ago was so forward-thinking.”

The community’s commitment has been especially evident during HOPE’s 50th anniversary celebration. Earlier this year, the organization raised more than $60,000 through its 50th Anniversary Fundraising Challenge. Doug and Mary Kapnick matched donations dollar for dollar up to $50,000.

The celebration continues Nov. 13 with A Night of Hope, the organization’s annual fundraising event held at the HOPE Center from 6 to 8:30pm.

Responsible for approximately 30% of HOPE’s annual funding, the evening will feature refreshments, a live auction, and additional opportunities to support the organization. Reservations are $75 and sponsorship opportunities are available. To further raise funds, HOPE is also selling anniversary T-shirts for $20.

“Whatever your niche is, that’s where you can be helpful,” she said. “The center is a wonderful place to be.” n

Popular Blissfield restaurant reopens ON

July 22, a former Blissfield restaurant reopened as The Stable, bringing life back to the former carriage house and stable adjacent to the historic Hathaway House.

Previously named the Main Street Stable & Tavern, the restaurant had closed about five years ago when the Weeber family ceased operation of the business they had started in the 1980s.

The Hathaway House was originally the David Carpenter House, built at 424 W Adrian St in 1851.

Around 1900, George and Prudence Hathaway acquired the house and, according to online sources, lived there until Prudence’s death in 1959.

In 1963, Arthur Weeber, Sr., and his wife, Allison, purchased the property and converted the main house into a fine dining restaurant. Their sons, Art and Mike, took over ownership and

operations in the 1970s.

The former horse stable and carriage house eventually became a gift shop run by Art’s wife, Mary, and was opened as the Main Street Stable & Tavern in 1982. The Hathaway House property has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979, and both restaurants were beloved dining destinations for decades.

The Hathaway House property, including the stable building, was sold in 2025 and is now being leased by the nonprofit American Farm Museum and Education Center, which has gallery space there for the Charles and Barbara Burkholder Farm Toy Collection. But the stable building has been idle, until now.

Maria Carrico, general manager of The Stable, has been involved in preparing for business since the farm

museum board reached out to her last year.

But she is not a newcomer. In fact, she has a long history with the tavern. “I worked at the Hathaway House and the Stables for 18 years,” she said. “About a year ago, they came to me and asked if I wanted to help them open a restaurant.”

The five-member museum board started a separate company for The Stable, and the operation will be a co-partnership between the farm museum and The Stable LLC, according to Melissa Tsuji, one of the board members who is also the director of the Greater Lenawee County Chamber. The past year has involved bringing everything up to new health codes and, recently, hiring a staff of about 25 people.

The original tavern had menu items that became favorites for regular patrons. And, while The Stable’s menu includes some familiar selections, Carrico explained that most of the favorites were prepared from family recipes to which they don’t have access. “We’ll have nods to former dishes,” she said. “But, for the most part, we are a new restaurant — new owners, new name, new menu, new staff.”

That new staff includes Chef Justin Hill, who Carrico said has done a fantastic job helping create the menu. Current offerings include appetizers, salads, sandwiches, desserts, and a full bar with some regional wines. The focus will mostly be on dinner options, since for now open hours will cater to dinner clientele.

Eventually, menu items such as pastas, seafood, and more will be added and the hours will be expanded.

“It’s great to have it back, to have another restaurant for people to frequent. There was a lot of history there, a lot of memories,” said Carrico.

“We’re hoping to continue those traditions as far as making it a place where friends and family gather and create new memories.”

The Stable retains its rustic charm with the original stable’s heavy beams and wood-walled interior. The main entrance has been moved to the east side of the building, a short walk from the street and the rear parking lot.

Since opening, loyal customers have filled the establishment, ready to pick up where they left off years ago.

Carrico said it feels good to be at the helm of the restaurant after essentially growing up there. “It was such a core piece of my life. I’m really proud of the work that we’ve put in. I really hope that people give us an opportunity to show them what we have.” n

peanut butter and jelly, eggs and bacon, Mom and apple pie — some things just go together. For the last three years, the team at Salt Springs Brewery in Saline has been hosting unique pairing dinner events, typically once a month, that not only offer creative food and drink pairings, but also pairings with a theme, pairings with other local businesses, and pairings that invite community engagement. Tickets are sold in advance (non-refundable but transferable), seating is limited, and these special dinners often sell out.

When Salt Springs first opened 11 years ago, the owners/brewers and chef worked together to create “beer dinners,” an early pairing idea. As the business grew, their focus turned elsewhere, but they always remembered how much fun those events were, what a sense of community they helped create, and that they hoped to bring them back one day.

Enter Salt’s Executive Chef Loren Halprin.

When he came aboard in 2019, he brought a wealth of culinary experience, having worked in several upscale restaurants in Detroit and Ann Arbor and for Landry’s corporation. He helped steer Salt through the challenges of Covid, and now, also as part owner and operator of the restaurant and brewery, Chef Loren’s pairing dinners allow him to feature his talent for, as he phrases it, “using simple ingredients, skillfully prepared.”

“The pairings are an exclusive five-course paired dinner with monthly alternating themes,” explained Keith Cummings, Salt’s general manager. “The set menu is made

by Chef Loren, and the drinks are paired by Tyler Roberts, our head brewer and beverage director.” The format is usually a traditional French presentation with a light appetizer for the first course, followed by a salad or seafood. Next comes a chicken or seafood

offering, then beef or a baked entree. The fifth course is always dessert.

According to Cummings, the food is only part of the presentation. Chef introduces each course to the guests, explaining his connection to the dish, how he made it, and his experiences with it. Likewise, the brewer discusses the beers, the bar manager sheds light on the spirits and cocktail pairings, and Cummings shares his knowledge about the wine. Each “hams it up” in their own way, Cummings said, making for a social and genial evening.

Housed in a former Methodist church built in 1899, Salt’s spacious dining room already has a communal feel surrounded by beautiful stained-glass windows and a high arched ceiling. Seating for the pairing dinners is limited to 45-55 people and is done in a family/community style — a more intimate sharing of tables for easy conversation — giving guests an opportunity to meet as strangers and leave as convivial friends.

Over this past summer, Salt Springs collaborated with their new business neighbors in Saline, Le Petit Boulevard Market, a full-service cheese shop and specialty market owned by Tecumseh locals John and Erica Aylward. Billed as a “fun, interactive 50-minute session” with a Salt brewer and Market cheesemonger, pairings of four beers with four cheeses were held outside in Salt’s biergarten every other Wednesday.

Starting in September, the themed pairing dinners will resume after an August break, with typically one per month. Each dinner is on a Monday night (when the restaurant is not otherwise open) and runs from 6 to 9pm. Tickets are $110 per person.

September’s dinner on Monday the 14th celebrates Rosh Hashana, or Jewish New Year. Courses will include matzo ball soup, gefilte fish, and Lekach — a honey cake.

with a local rabbi to offer the meal’s blessings.

Far out October will bring a ’60s-themed pairing dinner on Monday the 12th. Get groovy, baby, and wear threads for the vibe. In other words, there will be a ’60s costume contest, so come dressed in your ’60s best as you nosh on mushroom and leeks strudel, tuna casserole, and beef bourguignon.

November 9 ushers in the popular Vegan Harvest pairing dinner, which Cummings noted always sells out quickly. Slated for December 14’s pairing is A Trip Around the British Isles. Salt’s website offers further details on pairing dinners, with menus available 90 days in advance.

Salt’s owners and operators, brewers, chef, and manager are based in the local community and care about being stewards of that community. As much as possible, food is locally sourced. Much of their beef and pork comes from Vestergaard Farms, just a few miles up the road. Their produce comes from Needle Lane Farms in Tipton, and Flying Otter wine from Adrian was recently added to their list.

Cummings pointed out that about half of the guests at pairing dinners are repeat customers. “People really appreciate the value and experience they get, interacting with Chef Loren, owners Mark Zadvinskis and Ed Brosius, and other guests,” he said. Describing the pairing dinners as offering “approachable, seasonal food with something familiar, something new,” Cummings iterated the experience is not pretentious, but casual and playful. “We’re just trying to provide honest quality food for the community.” n

Inspired by Erin Morgenstern’s bestselling novel, “The Night Circus,” which tells the story of a magical circus that appears without warning and only opens after dark, the market was created to introduce more visitors to the winery while offering a unique community gathering. Founded 105 years ago, St. Julian is Michigan’s oldest winery; sources 100% of its fruit from Michigan; and is home to the state’s first female winemaker, Nancie Oxley.

“We wanted to get people to come out and have something fun to do that doesn’t cost a lot,” Salow said. “The idea was to get people into the winery to learn about what we do, and people love maker’s markets.

There are so many different cool things to see.”

While it is held at a winery, Salow hopes families won’t overlook the event simply because of its location. “Some people think, ‘oh there’s alcohol so I don’t want to bring the kids,’ but it’s a great family-friendly event,” he said.

“One of the best memories I have from last year was seeing some of the kids watching the belly dancers and being amazed by the Demon Brothers breathing fire. Just seeing the kids interact and look amazed was great. It’s fun all the way around.”

sat with 13 other women at tables in a coffee shop, taking part in an event hosted by The Perky Wallflower Speed Dating, a business run by a mother-daughter duo based in Chelsea. Soon, 14 men took their turns at each of our tables, spending six minutes in conversation until a bell signaled for them to switch to the next partner.

For singles weary of online dating attempts and hoping to make a genuine connection, speed dating events are a social alternative that seeks to bring people together for a chance to get away from screens and meet in real life. Sara Clemm and her teenage daughter, Adia, are facilitating such meetups throughout Southeast Michigan, with the proceeds from the endeavor going into Adia’s college fund.

The idea was Adia’s. In seventh grade, she had to come up with a business plan. Inspired by the speed dating success of her mother and stepfather, Elmar, she expressed a desire to make her plan a reality.

That was in 2022. Her mother agreed and they have since hosted events in the Ann Arbor area and

Sara and Elmar are friends with the owners, Carrie and Kevin Germain, who bought the winery a couple of years ago. “The first time we had a lot of interest, because there was nothing like that in this area,” Carrie said. “The feedback was that a lot of people really liked our venue.”

She added that she and Kevin have been making many improvements to the winery since they purchased the business and have enjoyed hosting speed dating events there.

The gatherings take place in Flying Otter’s tasting room, a seasonal venue with an open-air pavilion that overlooks the vineyard and is surrounded by nature. The next speed dating event at Flying Otter will be held Sunday, Sept.

Sara explained that most people are nervous at first but that, once they get talking, they are pleasantly surprised that it’s laid-back and fun. “Everybody tends to be in a good mood. It’s upbeat. People are excited,” she said. “That is one of the things we love the most about the business.”

Sara shared that speed dating makes it easier for participants to see if they have an interest in each other, rather than writing to someone online only to eventually find out there’s no attraction. They aim for 10-12 “dates” during the event, though there are sometimes more. The events are separated by age ranges such as 20s/30s, 30s/40s, 40s/50s, and 50s/60s.

Each attendee gets a small notebook where they write down the names of their dates and, after six minutes, add “yes” or “no” next to the name to indicate if they want to match. After the event, Sara and Adia go through the notebooks

to see who said “yes” to each other and send emails to let participants know who their matches are. Sara said connections are the goal. “We want to see people be happy and not be lonely, so we’re really trying to address that in our own little way.”

The enthusiastic chatter at my first speed dating event made it evident that people were, indeed, making connections. n

Well, you’re in luck. Those tasty edibles are but a click away, thanks to Mac Attack, a recently launched ghost restaurant operating out of Salsaria’s kitchen whose menu items are available exclusively for online ordering for pickup or delivery.

For Valerie Robichaud, owner of Salsaria’s, a downtown Tecumseh staple for the past decade, Mac Attack, which made its debut this past December, provides an additional opportunity to create unique culinary delights for customers while also providing more consistent work hours for Salsaria’s back-of-house staff. “I wanted to boost employees’ hours to make up for the slow periods,” she said.

In keeping with Robichaud’s usual approach to her business ventures, she took her time contemplating this newest endeavor. “It was important to me that it be well thought out to provide the best customer experience while making it fun for the team,” she explained.

It’s one more way she continues to innovate in an effort to retain both

customers and staff and to infuse joy into the work environment. “The kitchen staff loves it,” said Robichaud. “They think it’s the coolest thing ever.” And Mac Attack’s customers seem to concur.

The transition to focusing on mac ‘n cheese for this latest initiative felt like a natural one. For the past several years, Salsaria’s has included mac ‘n cheese on their menu, alternating between three seasonal recipes, and these variations on the traditional comfort food have proven popular with patrons.

Once everyone has settled in, the band will take an intermission around 7pm for the highlight of the evening: the annual grape-stomping competition.

Teams of two will battle it out by stomping grapes in large vats for a set amount of time to claim the title of Cherry Creek Grape Stomp Champion. Anyone interested in competing can register at the outdoor bar upon arrival. Approximately 15 minutes before the competition begins, 16 teams will be randomly selected from those who sign up.

The competition follows a bracket-style format with four preliminary rounds featuring four teams each. The winner of each round will advance to the championship round, where one team will earn the coveted 2026 Cherry Creek Grape Stomp Champion title, along with a trophy, a bottle of wine for each team member, and — perhaps most importantly — yearlong bragging rights.

After the champion is crowned, Act III will return to the stage to keep the party going.

“You’ll see all kinds of fun throughout the evening,” Spensley said. “Previously, we’ve seen people come dressed as Lucille Ball from her famous grape-stomping scene; contestants in purple leotards as a de facto team uniform; and, of course, lots of grape juice flying when the stomping begins.”

Food will be available for purchase throughout the night, giving guests plenty of options to enjoy while listening to music and cheering on the competitors.

hat started as a way to spend time together 14 years ago has grown into a thriving business for Michele and Dave Esty, a husband-and-wife team who operate antique booths at both Tecumseh Antique Appeal, and Antiques & Vintage on the Boulevard in Tecumseh, as well as Consign It! Home Interiors in Toledo.

The Estys got their start after Michele began attending auctions with her father, and Dave, a lifelong collector who collected coins and stamps with his grandfather, soon joined in. Before long, the couple decided to rent an antique booth together.

Over the years, they have learned that building a successful antique booth takes more than finding unique treasures. It requires time, research, and effort. “For us, we are working on it constantly, but it really depends on the level of what you are trying to achieve,” Michele said. “If it’s just a hobby, then maybe you’re spending 10-15 hours a week on it. If it’s more than a hobby, then you’re putting in around 40 hours.”

A large part of that time is spent hunting for treasure at estate sales, garage sales, and auctions. The couple says finding room to store merchandise can be challenging. “Sometimes you accumulate more than you can move at a reasonable pace,” Dave said. “You might get amazing deals on an estate collection, but then you might have that inventory for a year before it leaves your house.”

Finding the inventory is only part of the job. Understanding customers and keeping up with trends are equally important.

“You have to know your clientele, what they are looking for and what they want. It changes daily,” Michele said. “You have to have a little bit of everything to hit a wider base of people.”

Following vintage and thrift influencers on TikTok is one way to stay informed of rising trends. Styles like grandmacore, cottagecore, and mid-century modern are gaining popularity, while clear glass and Pyrex are declining. Younger shoppers tend to search for vintage clothing, records, and nostalgic items from their childhood. Keeping detailed records of purchase prices and sales also helps identify which items are popular and profitable.

Presentation is another key to success. The Estys recommend keeping booths clean, well lit, and regularly rearranged so returning

customers always discover something new. It also helps to create interesting, themed displays; rotate inventory; and price items according to current market value.

Because every antique mall is different, Dave encourages potential vendors to research rent and commission costs, foot traffic, location, and competition before renting a booth. He also suggests newcomers start small and focus on items they are knowledgeable about.

Like the Estys, vendors may choose to share a booth with a friend or family members to gain experience and perspective.

“Teaming up with family and sharing the load can get the passion going, like Michele, her dad, and I,” Dave said. “Michele will find things that interest her, and I’ll find things that interest me. We get to spend a lot of extra time together and have a lot of fun.”

Despite all the work involved, the Estys agree that the business remains rooted in passion, nostalgia, and the preservation of history. “It’s a chance to use all of this stuff instead of it going into the trash,” Michele said. “The older furniture especially is so much better quality than you can buy new today. You can refinish it, paint it, fix it, and it will last you a lifetime. It has a second chance with another home.” n

“Assassins Anonymous” by Rob Hart is a clever, witty, and surprising thriller. Mark was the most dangerous killer-for-hire in the world. But, after learning the hard way that his life’s work made him more monster than man, he left all of that behind and joined a 12-step group for reformed killers. When he is viciously attacked by an unknown assailant, he is forced on the run, from New York to Singapore to London, chasing after clues while dodging attacks. Mark tries to solve the puzzle of who’s after him without killing anyone — or getting killed himself. I read this gripping novel in one day. I couldn’t put it down!

“Beautiful Things” by Kim Fay is a wonderful book. It’s a short read at only 166 pages, but those pages are packed with warmth, heart, and humor. Set in the 1960s, this epistolary novel centers on Joan, a burgeoning food writer, and Imogen, an experienced columnist. When Joan sends Imogen a fan letter and a little bit of saffron, their friendship, correspondence, and cooking adventures begin. I enjoyed this book tremendously and was sorry to see it end.

“The Authenticity Project” by Clare Pooley is about six strangers with one thing in common: their lives aren’t always what they make them out to be. This heartwarming novel begins with an elderly artist, Julian, as he writes his truth in a green notebook that he leaves in a coffee shop. The story follows several characters — the cafe owner Monica, an addict named Hazard, and an Instagram influencer named Alice — as they find the notebook and add their own truths, revealing that no one’s life is as perfect as it seems. This uplifting book explores themes of loneliness, addiction, connection, and the power of vulnerability. A perfect reminder to all of us in this age of social media.
