eena Hazlett has spent the last 25 years taking care of animals.

She’s worked in doggy daycare, for the Humane Society of Huron Valley, for private kennels and hobby farms, and she owns nine dogs, herself. So, what do you do with a big love for animals, a helping heart, and all the skills learned over the years? For Hazlett, the decision to open Deena’s Pet Service was a no-brainer.

A typical day for Hazlett includes multiple stops at up to 15 different homes to take care of pets whose owners are at work, on vacation, or those who just need an extra hand. Hazlett will feed, medicate, and give the animals attention and a much-needed outdoor break – whether that’s a walk around the neighborhood or just a romp in the yard. With Hazlett’s services, pet owners won’t need to worry about their pets while they are gone. She’ll make sure litter is clean for cats and caged pets, that everyone has adequate water and food, and give them a little scratch between the ears. She doesn’t just take care of pets though – she prides herself on keeping a sharp eye on clients’ property as well, and lets them know if anything is amiss. Hazlett will even send them photos of her visit with their pets and reassure them that everything is a-okay for a worry-free day.

Because of Hazlett’s training and work experience, she’s usually the first to know if there is a health issue with a pet she’s visiting and has often accompanied a pet to the vet for services. Her pet care options even include nail trimming. For $15 a pet, she will come to a client’s home and they won’t have to wrestle with Fido or Fluffy.

Hazlett is often in demand by local breeders as an extra hand for puppy whelping and has helped take care of litters as they grow and get a little rowdy. She often assists with transporting animals to grooming appointments, vet appointments, new homes or to the airport, accompanying

puppies until they are loaded, or meeting owners to deliver their new family member. She’s also happy to help people who are moving.

Hazlett has delivered pets to such faraway states as Florida.

Deena’s Pet Services is a family business that is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Two of her three daughters help when the client list gets long during busy vacation months, and her husband will get roped in to delivering hay to hobby farms, too.

Because of her reputation, Hazlett has become a well-known resource in the community. Farms will call her in for an extra helping hand, or when they are away and need someone to take care of the animals and homestead. Local people give her a call when they need assistance with rehoming a pet after a loved one has passed, or if an animal is found with no tags. She works with several rescue organizations to foster abandoned animals, takes in donations (like crates that aren’t being used anymore, or a harness that a dog has outgrown), and helps pet parents who are in a bind – whether that bind is financial or time availability.

During the pandemic she cared for many pets of medical sector employees working mandatory 1618 hour shifts. Many other families during this time were struggling to feed their animals because of income loss and Hazlett helped spread the word about the Humane Society’s Pet Food Bank and other free or low-cost services in the area.

Hazlett believes in keeping a pet in its loving home and will help in any way she can to support the ideal situation.

Hazlett’s services book up quickly, especially for overnight stays. To get on her books she requires a meet and greet with clients and their pets. She will come to meet a family and learn about their desires for care, their pet’s needs, and daily routines. Then she might even take the dog for a walk, if that’s something owners normally do, in order to get to know him or her. She won’t push an anxious dog to interact with her though – she is patient and will wait for the pet to warm up. n

pening a “sweets marketplace” in the same building that once held a chocolate shop and an ice cream parlor is bringing sweet rewards for Joshua Roth, owner of The Vault in Downtown Tecumseh. The former Tecumseh State Savings Bank building was home to The Chocolate Vault for more than two decades, served as a Spotted Cow ice cream shop, and now continues its confectionery theme with offerings such as ice cream, gelato, fudge, popcorn, old-fashioned sodas, and a collaboration with Harvest Chocolate of Adrian. The Vault officially opened on May 11.

The storefront in the 19th Century building features dark, rich woodwork in contrast to the white and gray marble wall around the vault and in half-walls near the front entrance. The old hardwood floors have been restored in an alternating dark and light pattern. Where once tellers stood behind the curved marble counter, now The Vault’s staff serve up a variety of treats for the sweet tooth. Customer seating is available in a room at the back of the shop.

The original bank vault remains and is used as a space to grind chocolate beans by Elizabeth Gentry, who owns Harvest Chocolate with her husband, Matt Cross. “It was really important to kind of pay respects to what The Chocolate Vault was and feature the vault door, and now we’ve removed a wall so you can see the actual vault,” said Roth. “It's just such a cool feature in town and it’s really exciting to share the history of it with the community.”

The bean-to-bar Harvest Chocolate is produced on site in an area behind the curved counter, in full view of visitors. According to Gentry, Harvest Chocolate is made by roasting the raw cacao beans and creating dark chocolate and vegan chocolate bars with flavors such as pineapple salted caramel, cinnamon custard, lemon custard, winter citrus spiced chai, and maple pecan, and bags of snacking chocolate in variations such as Guatemala, Ecuador, Ghana, and Haiti to reflect the different tastes of beans acquired from those countries.

Roth, who divides his time between his Musgrove & Company coffee shop locations in Tecumseh and Jackson, is thrilled he was able to bring a sweet shop back to downtown Tecumseh. “It feels really great. Already it’s been very successful. People that have been following along immediately came in after they heard we were open, as well as just the natural flow of people being downtown and the association of ice cream and dessert being in the space, we’ve had customers walk in off the street,” he said. “It’s been really great being able to share that with the followers that we’ve had as well as the customers that come in that are pleasantly surprised with the remodels and renovations that we’ve done. It’s been going really well.”

Roth said they have partnered with Iorio Gelato of Manchester and offer eight different flavors of their gelato.

Their ice cream is the Hudsonville brand. “We are working with Murdick’s Fudge from Sutton’s Bay and we have a variety of fudge, caramel corn, and peanut brittle. Some fun stuff that we added toward the end is penny candies,” he said. The candies include Dad’s Root Beer Barrells hard candy and Charms Blow Pops, for example, and will have lower prices in the five

Roth said his partner, Lora Kasik, was a blessing in getting the shop open. “She’s really enjoyed setting all of this up and really focusing on the operations side,” he said. Kasik is in charge of the day-to-day operations along with Manager Mallory Creque and supervisor Katy Foss. “The three of them have been working hard, getting processes down, and communicating with customers. We are open to feedback and new ideas to see how we can cater this toward the community and what the demands are,” he said. n

Richard Socks in D.C. at Freedom Wall

$ But, on April 23, the nonagenarian Army veteran was able to take a one-day trip to Washington, D.C. aboard a chartered jet with 81 other veterans from World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Their 16-hour day included a round-trip flight to the nation’s capital, tours of all of the war memorials, the changing of the guard at Arlington National Cemetery, and visits to the Iwo Jima, Pentagon, Martin Luther King Jr., and President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) memorials.

The trip was courtesy of the Talons Out Honor Flight program based in Portage, Michigan. Talons Out is a hub of Honor Flight, which started in 2006. Its mission is to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. so they can visit the memorials honoring them and others who sacrificed and served our country.

Socks, who turned 98 on April 13, was amazed at the way everything worked, from the time he arrived at 5:15 a.m. in Kalamazoo to the time the plane touched down on the return flight at 9:15 p.m. “I couldn’t believe it,” he said. “It went like clockwork, you might say. We were flying at 34,000 feet and were in D.C. in one hour.”

Three buses transported 82 veterans on the tour, which culminated in a group photo in front of the Lincoln Memorial. They also enjoyed lunch near the Air Force Memorial. When they arrived back in Michigan, they were honored with a “Welcome Home” walk, with hundreds of people applauding them and thanking them for their service.

Gratitude was the order of the day, according to Socks’ niece, Carol Socks Parker, who accompanied him on the flight. Parker’s father, Glenn, was Socks’ younger brother. “I dropped him off at the door at the airport (in Kalamazoo) and went to park the car and as soon as I did that, someone was there shaking his hand and thanking him for his service,” Parker said. “This went on all day long.

Everywhere he went, people thanked him for his service. When we got home, it was like a slumber party. He talked about it practically all night, about how awesome it was.”

Socks was drafted in 1943 and became part of the Army’s 86th Infantry Division Black Hawks. He was working at the bomber plant in Ypsilanti when he was ordered to report for his physical in Detroit.

He remembers riding on a bus from Adrian with several other guys, most of whom, Socks said, have died.

He was sent to basic training in Texas and later became a sergeant. He did so well he was invited to stay at the base and teach skills to new recruits, including shooting on the rifle range and using a machine gun, day and night compass training, and digging a foxhole that could withstand the force of a tank driving over the top of it. His assignment in basic training kept him from the Battle of the Bulge and Iwo Jima, although he eventually would be sent to both Europe and the Pacific Theatre.

He reached France not long before the death of FDR. His squadron traveled through to Salzburg and he was there when victory in Europe was declared May 8, 1945. He remembers the Americans being celebrated there, but for him the war wasn’t completely over. After a parade in the Big Apple, Socks was shipped to the Philippines where the Americans were repelling the Japanese troops. His next assignment was to be sent to Japan, but the U.S. dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki changing all plans.

He didn’t talk much about his war experiences, either. But four years ago he spoke to a class at Tecumseh High School. A young man at that presentation remembered him, and when Parker was seeking “thank you” letters, she said, that THS senior wrote him a note, said he had the “privilege of hearing him speak,” and thanked him for his service.

CHELSEA'S HAVEN FOR RESCUED ANIMALS

you love animals, you might recognize Dan McKernan from the Animal Planet series, Save the Barn. The Animal Planet film crew followed the team at Barn Sanctuary in Chelsea, Mich. eight hours a day, seven days a week for a year. Although a change in leadership brought the end of the series, snippets of the show’s first year are available on YouTube, and luckily you can experience the farm animal sanctuary up close and in person.

Many of us dream of an idyllic childhood summer on the farm, but McKernan got one. Though he moved around a lot when he was a kid, he spent his summers on the Chelsea farm that his grandparents owned – the farm has been in the family for over 140 years. McKernan had been working in the computer development field in Austin, Texas for four or five years and was getting bored when he picked up a copy of Living the Farm Sanctuary Life by Gene Baur and Gene Stone. He was inspired to “do this someday.” The universe conspired to make someday sooner than McKernan ever thought.

When his father and aunt inherited the farm a short time later, McKernan approached them with the idea of turning the family farm into a farm animal sanctuary. A sanctuary is a place where animals find their forever home – it’s different from an animal rescue because the animals at a sanctuary aren’t adopted back out.

Established in 2016, the Barn Sanctuary houses neglected and abused farm animals. They give each animal a high quality of care, doling out over 150 medications each day, growing fresh vegetables in the garden as nutrition support and treats, and making sure that all the animals have pasture to frolic in.

McKernan has even gone so far as to drive a calf all the way across the country for care. In 2018 he

received a phone call from a farmer asking if he was open to taking in a 7-week-old calf. McKernan noticed that the calf’s eyes were a little cloudy and the veterinarian determined that his retinas were about 50% detached. McKernan asked what could be done to help the little guy, but the vet responded that there wasn’t much else to do for cows. McKernan wasn’t ready to take no for an answer though, saying, “an eye is an eye,” it didn’t matter what kind of animal belonged to it. He was determined

to help this little calf, named Mike, before he went blind. He found one vet that was willing to give surgery a try – in Pasadena, California. It took them two weeks to travel, with McKernan camping out in the van overnight with Mike. Unfortunately, the surgery didn’t work and Mike did go blind, but he is still being taken care of at the Barn Sanctuary and is happy to have his special friend visit him every day.

The crew of Barn Sanctuary treat each animal as an individual and love to share their unique stories with visitors.

Many of the animals at Barn Sanctuary have special needs. Some need medicine daily, some have prosthetics, some need special care during the cold months. When I chatted with McKernan I asked what it costs to run such an organization and was shocked to learn that the costs can run from

$100,000 to $125,000 a month, with a yearly medical bill upwards of $150,000.

Daunted by this number, I inquired about the biggest needs of the sanctuary right now. With the warmer weather coming, spring cleaning and starting the weekly tours is on the top of McKernan’s mind. Stalls need to be mucked, fences need to be mended, and fields need to be seeded – which means volunteers are needed, and even though McKernan hesitated to say it, donations are much needed, as well.

Thankfully, it is easy to do both.

Volunteers are asked to commit to two volunteer days a month, but if they can’t commit to that there are days when the farm could use a lot of extra hands, like the Pig Barn Cleaning Party. Anyone is welcome to lend a hand on those days, without committing to more. McKernan said volunteering on one of the big cleaning days is a good way for someone to get a taste of the farm and find out if volunteering is right for them.

Recently McKernan wrote a children’s book to bring more visibility and awareness to the sanctuary and its mission. This Farm is a Family is about a young cow named Buttercup who is anxious about coming to her new home.

The book is based on the real animals at the sanctuary and their experiences as seen through the author’s eyes and lived through his own familiarity of being the “new kid on the block.” Proceeds from the book will help to support the farm and McKernan will be giving readings and doing book signings in the area throughout the summer.

Donations for the upkeep of the animals and their barn home are always accepted via barnsactuary.com by clicking on the yellow donate button at the top right of the page. There are options to give monthly or as a one-time donation. Barn Sanctuary supporters can also sponsor a fundraiser to support the farm as an individual or a group, and even sponsor a specific animal. The sanctuary also holds an annual auction and special fundraisers for specific needs when they arise.

You can plan a trip to meet all the goats, over 30 pigs, cows, chickens, sheep, and donkeys during on-site visit weekends, request a private tour, schedule a youth visit or field trip, or even join the barn for a monthly virtual tour.

Keep in mind that visitors are only allowed on site during tours and for certain celebrations and that you are visiting a working farm – so plan your visit ahead of time, and dress accordingly. Private tours are led by trained guides who are knowledgeable about the animal species, the stories behind the animal residents, and the farming industry. Not every sanctuary has the room or the funds to rescue every animal surrendered to them and McKernan has had to say no to taking on a new animal more times than he’d like to count. As much as it pains him to have to turn an animal down, he will always do what he can to help place an animal in need if he can’t accept it. “There are hundreds of farm animal sanctuaries in the United States,” he told me. Thankfully, farm animal sanctuaries, and the humans behind them, work together to help find homes for rescued, endangered, abused, or abandoned farm animals. One look at McKernan’s face when he is with the animals he’s rescued, and you know that the work he does is important, needed, and carried out with a generous and loving heart. n

Saturday, August 13, antique tractor aficionados will gather in Britton for the 4th annual Antique Tractor Poker Run. This years day of fellowship also raises money to benefit Disabled American Veterans.

Participants begin at the Bailey Farm on Ford Highway and after visiting five farms the event ends with a catered dinner at the Wielfaert Farm on Rixom Highway and M-50.

The Britton farming community has always been a close and tightknit group of local families spanning multiple generations who enjoy spending time together whenever possible. Poker runs are popular activities for people with motorcycles, but Britton farmer Steve Sommers thought it would be fun to take the idea and substitute antique tractors for the motorcycles.

He brought up his idea at an end of day gathering at Paul and Laurie Wielfaert’s farm. The Bailey family – Bill, Judy and Steve – loved Sommers’ idea, and the community enthusiastically got on board right from the start.

The middle of August is a time when most farms are in between harvests and now that the Lenawee County Fair has moved to July, it is a perfect time to plan a community get-together. “It’s so rewarding to see all the farmers,” said Judy.

“This is the highlight of the year,” added Bill. The day has many moving parts that all run smoothly thanks to the volunteers who help at the stops and donate money, food, and prizes for the cause.

The community raised $1,800 in 2019 to benefit the American Cancer Society, $3,800 in 2020 to benefit the Tecumseh Service Club, and $6,200 in 2021 to benefit the Michigan Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The most visible part of the day is the antique tractors. The tractors must be from 1970 or earlier, have an American flag flying, and be able to travel approximately 30 miles making five stops at different farms in the area. Each farm offers beverages and snacks, which are donated by area families, for the tractor drivers and riders.

Traveling along the roads of Britton and Tecumseh at about 10 miles per hour, the day is not known for speed but for the love of fellowship. Besides the tractor drivers, there can also be riders – people who ride on the tractor or an attached wagon. In 2019 there were 80 antique tractors with three riders traveling together.

In 2020 there were 121 tractors and 29 riders, and the number jumped to 144 tractors and 29 riders in 2021.

Each year the event begins at 8 a.m. at the Bailey farm.

Tractors can be registered Saturday morning or at a pre-registration get-together on Friday evening. The cost is $25 – $5 goes for expenses of the day, $10 for refreshments and $10 for the charity.

Drivers and their riders enjoy freshly made doughnuts by Lyle and Andy DeJonghe. “They start at four in the morning frying doughnuts,” Steve Bailey said.

Also at the start of the day, everyone gets their poker hands, which stay in the envelopes until they arrive at the last stop of the day. In addition to the winner with the best hand of poker, there’s a 50/50 raffle, quilt raffle, and many donated door prizes. Last year those prizes included a grill, a smoker, a hand-crafted bird house, and a power washer.

guard at the Wielfaert farm with a memorial salute for all veterans. A catered dinner will feed the hungry tractor drivers and riders after a fun day of traveling together.

The day happens rain or shine and begins with a blessing of the tractors. In the past, people have come from Ohio and Texas to join the poker run, and two of the regular drivers are in their 90s. Pecking away at dreams When James Clarke was growing up

in Osburn Subdivision, south of Tecumseh, “Ten a Day” was a kind of family motto.

“It basically meant that we needed to eat 10 fruits and veggies a day,” he said. “My mom wanted to make us eat better. Then it became 10 better food choices. Then it was 10 things a day that we could do for selfcare and mental health.”

Everyone had a small garden and there was always someone to play with, someone to help gather berries, nearby farms to provide a sense of where food came from.

“This area always stoked that want and need to be a farmer,” he said. “This is the culture my parents brought to us.”

The philosophy of “Ten a Day” became the moniker for Clarke’s 10-acre farm near Manchester, where he is working to help others learn that food is not a difficult thing to “do.”

He leads the way up a small hill, his arms sweeping along the edge of the property and directly into his dream. At the aquaponic greenhouse where construction is underway, Clarke begins describing all of the vegetables – and the tilapia – he plans to raise there. His goal is to concentrate on “things that don’t grow year-round in Michigan,” like fresh tomatoes, fresh lettuce, and tilapia.

Just a short distance back down the hill is a little walkway leading to two chicken coops. The Rhode Island Reds squawk and scratch the ground, moving back and forth,

pecking at the dirt. Clarke said he selected the Rhode Island Reds because they are the best layers and a hardy bird that can weather the colder temperatures of a Michigan winter. The first coop houses what Clarke calls the “family chickens,” 15 or so that lay eggs for the family. The neighboring coop is more than twice as big and holds 50 chickens. This is what Clarke refers to as “Arlo’s chickens.”

“These are all the bread and pastry chickens,” he explains. “Every egg these girls lay will go straight to Tecumseh Bread and Pastry, to Arlo. I get 16-21 dozen a week just out of these girls, but Arlo uses 30-40 dozen a week so these don’t fully supply him. So next year, I’ll build another coop and add 50 more chickens to supply him.”

Clarke graduated from Tecumseh High School in 2006 and spent 11 years in West Virginia, learning about the restaurant business, cooking, and farm-to-table operations. When he returned to Michigan his dream started taking shape. He worked at the People’s Food Co-Op in Ann Arbor and some of the friends he made there told him about Arlo and Tecumseh Bread and Pastry. He started as holiday help at the bakery nearly two years ago and is still there. He has had his farm for just a couple of years.

Clarke’s ultimate goal is to make his farm a place where people can learn what goes into food production and learn to grow their own vegetables. There are already folks he knows that feed their families all summer long from their own gardens.

“This is my passion,” he said, looking out at the fields, twisting a bit of grass in his fingers. “No one should ever be without fresh food. I love what I do, and I’m really looking forward to the results. It’s tough now, but what I want will happen. In the meantime, I keep shoveling the dirt – it’s progress.” n

Henry David Thoreau wrote in Walden, his reflection on the values of simplicity, self-reliance, and the wisdom of nature. Paul LaBeau, 57, of Manchester, may have had a similar idea 13 years ago when he moved to his home on ten-and-a-half wooded acres adjacent to a field near the western edge of Washtenaw County. And for LaBeau, living deliberately includes gardening and landscaping to his heart’s content.

Growing up in the Detroit Downriver city of Wyandotte, “I always wanted to live in the country,” LaBeau says. One of nine children in his parents’ small house, LaBeau spent some time as a teenager living with his grandmother who kept a small garden, just a few blocks from his parents. “She taught me gardening, and I just took the ball and ran with it,” says LaBeau, “that was my thing.”

Romanesque statues of gargoyles, angels, and cherubs peer out from the clearing within the drive, dotted with mature hardwood trees and evergreens. Multiple islands of garden beds arise from the grassy clearing, around and between the trees. A pole barn, carport, and former child’s playhouse converted into what LaBeau and his longtime girlfriend Beth Travis call their “We Shed,” flank both sides of the drive before the house is in plain sight, nestled inconspicuously among the trees.

As the circular drive winds back towards the field to the north, the scope and size of Paul LaBeau’s masterful gardens and landscaping comes into clearer focus. LaBeau’s labor of love – his passion for gardening and landscaping – is everywhere in sight on his property.

A gentle hillside sloping down from the field toward the house contains what LaBeau says is “the heart of it all.”

There, LaBeau’s landscaping features a burbling stream winding down the hillside, cradled by rocks he brought in from a friend’s property and traversed by a wooden foot bridge he built. Edged by delicate fountains, Japanese maples, eclectic objects, succulents, potted plants – and frequented by numerous frogs – the stream flows into two smaller pools, which LaBeau refers to as “the top pond and middle pond,” and ends in a 2,000 gallon koi pond. “It turned out better than I ever imagined. I just had a vision and stuck with it,” says LaBeau.

aBeau has had no formal training in gardening or landscaping. “Most of my design ideas just come from my mind,” he says.

In the couple’s vision of home and gardens, inside and outside appear to seamlessly meld together. They enjoy antiquing and repurposing found objects.

“We go to flea markets, thrift shops, yard sales, estate sales. I’ve always been creative. I like creating things. We like to find things, put them together, and fit them in the garden,” says LaBeau. “And,” he adds, “we do it on the cheap.”

What LaBeau saves in money, he invests in time. Some people dream of gardening in retirement, but he continues to work 45 hours a week as he has done for nearly the last 35 years at Huron Valley Steel in Belleville. Travis, who also works full time, says, “He’s built everything himself. There’s no contractors ever coming in.”

LaBeau’s landscaping has been 10 years in the making, and of what he does now is maintenance, with perennials and annuals added every year. He has learned what plants work on his land and how to save seeds, dry them, and replant them.

“A lot of people think I’m a little nuts because I have so much to take care of,” he says. “I cancelled cable TV 10 years ago, and when I come home I just come out in the yard, even when it’s raining. This is my entertainment.”

The fish and frogs in the stream seem to know LaBeau and Travis. “We actually hand-feed the frogs here. They come right up to us,” says LaBeau. At the edge of the koi pond, he has fashioned a small gazebo and pergola with a bench underneath. Windchimes LaBeau made (an old billiards 8-ball is the dinger) provide soothing sounds and keep the herons from swooping in for a fresh koi catch. “It’s our favorite spot to sit and drink coffee in the morning,” says LaBeau. “Sometimes the dragonflies come in too, and we watch the males compete for the females’ attention. Sometimes we get to see the females laying their eggs on the water.”

n the hillside just east of the stream and ponds is a spacious gazebo LaBeau built entirely from reclaimed barnwood. “I’ve never found another barn-beam gazebo like this, not even on the internet,” he says. “It’s one-of-a-kind and that’s what I like. I like unique things.” At the peak of the gazebo is a $10 window found at the Ann Arbor Antiques Market framed by stained glass the couple put in themselves, keeping the rain out but the sky in view. A vintage glass-topped, wrought iron table and chairs with seating for six is centered in the gazebo, a perfect spot from which to survey all LaBeau’s visionary gardens and landscaping. The interior walls of the gazebo are adorned with hand-painted signs: one Travis made of Michigan’s Vernor’s Ginger Ale, and another LaBeau made hailing the B-52s’ “Love Shack” lyric: “Tin Roof, Rusted.”

Birdhouses that LaBeau’s father makes perch just outside the gazebo and all around the property, where bluebirds and wrens are familiar visitors. Near the stained glass at the peak of the gazebo, a dove has made a nest. Hummingbirds flit by, and orioles whistle in the distance. “The best thing,” says LaBeau, “is sitting and taking everything in, remembering what it was and what it is now. It’s a sense of accomplishment.”

ust below the gazebo is a spacious brick and paver patio. The lions-head fountain at the center, painted in a copper patina, is surrounded by pots, benches, and statues.

Along the top of the hillside trellises LaBeau built from repurposed rebar once used in Michigan highways stand ready for the 15 to 20 varieties of climbing clematis that burst forth in a wall of colors, as do grapes, blackberries, and blueberries, Michigan kiwi, peaches, apples, watermelons, squash, zucchini, peppers, sunflowers, honeysuckle, 20 varieties of hydrangeas, and more than 380 varieties of hostas all around the property. The corrugated tin roof corn crib LaBeau erected next to the trellises houses gardening tools for the hillside harvest.

Also along the top of the hillside, a long, tall tunnel made out of wire fencing supports growing gourds. In the fall Travis will dry and clean those gourds before turning them into works of painted art she sells at craft shows and shops.

To the left of the tunnel is the bee house the couple built, home to mason and leaf cutter bees. Other pollinators include the butterflies attracted to plants such as hyssop and milkweed, which are kept a distance from the pond because the frogs like butterflies as their fresh catch. “There’s always challenges out in the country,” LaBeau said.

he couple’s “We Shed” exudes charm with an old milk chute door stamped with “Wyandotte, MI,” LaBeau’s hometown, tucked into one of the walls. Colored glass bottles and vases sit atop window sashes, and an old art deco hanging light fixture and antique wall sconces add amber light. Painted cabinets came from friends and fencing from Travis’ old house and her parent’s neighbors decorate the outside. It’s a convenient spot to spread out food or grab extra chairs when they are outside with friends at the fire pit. A piece of old wood inside is painted with Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” lyric “…And the forest will echo with laughter.” On the back side of the shed a robin chirps from the nest she has built just under the roof’s gable.

LaBeau’s creations within the natural landscape as well as what he has built upon it are astonishing to behold. The work is never done. There is pruning to do in winter, and much time spent watering.

Weeds always need to be pulled. Mulching and mowing must be attended to. Most days when he gets home from work, he has dinner and spends the remainder of the evening until dark or beyond tending to his plants, building his creations, or just walking around, sitting on benches, taking it all in. “When you do what you love,” says LaBeau, “you never get sick of it. It’s very rewarding because you start from nothing and see it grow. Experience comes with each season. Every year you learn more and learn from your failures.”

“Yeah,” LaBeau pauses, searches for words, “It’s just peace of mind.” n

In

every community, in every generation, there always are a few folks who stand out for their selfless contributions to the “other,” those who are in need, whether from illness, poverty, or loneliness.

Recently, two such people were honored with the dedication of a baby grand player piano at the new Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital. Both were devoted to family and community and as physicians, both spent their lives caring for others.

Both also loved music.

Dr. Catherine “Cathy” Cook, and her father, Dr. Carlton L. Cook, were lauded for their “years of service in our hospitals and throughout our community,” according to Katie Frye, executive director for the ProMedica Regional FoundationMichigan.

“This piano will serve as a reminder of the commitment the two doctors had to healthcare in Lenawee as well as their love for music and the arts,” Frye said at the April 3 dedication of the piano.

Dr. Cathy Cook, an anesthesiologist for 30 years, died in November 2013 at the age of 60, while her father, who established his family medical practice in Tecumseh in 1953, died in February 2019. He was 92.

April Cook Gunder, Cathy’s sister and one of Carlton Cook’s daughters, said that “you really can’t separate Mom and Dad” when talking about their contributions to the Tecumseh community.

“They really gave everything they had for this town,” Gunder said. “Cathy did, too.”

The senior Dr. Cook delivered thousands

of babies, stitched up hundreds of children and adults who came rushing to his downtown Tecumseh or East Pottawatamie Street offices, towels and washcloths wrapped around bleeding wounds; and sat with thousands of patients, listening to their ailments and offering advice or a sympathetic ear.

“Dad was a kind person, and a good listener,” Gunder said. “People felt they could talk to him.”

He loved music, especially singing with his barbershop quartet and over the years, frequently tread the boards with the Tecumseh Players and at the Croswell Opera House, winning roles in musical productions. He also played the piano, taking lessons almost right up to his death, according to Gunder. “He really loved the piano and took lessons,” she said. “He always was trying to improve himself.”

As a member of the Kiwanis Club of Tecumseh, he was “Santa” to special needs children, treating them with kindness and care. He was in a book club, had a pilot’s license, and with his wife and family was active in the Tecumseh Presbyterian Church. “He was very involved in church,” Gunder said. “He sang in the choir, he was an elder.”

Dr. Carlton Cook and his wife, Lynn, enjoyed many adventures together and loved to travel, according to Margaret Cook Miller, another of the Cook’s daughters. They raised their children to be confident and kind. They also modeled leadership for their children. City Council, and the boards of Hospice of Lenawee and Herrick Hospital.“Both of my parents really believed in their children,” Miller said. “They knew we could do whatever we wanted.”

Added Gunder, “Mom had a heart for helping people. She would say that if you don’t like someone, then you don’t know them very well.”

Lynn Bales was studying to be a teacher at Michigan State University when her future husband was in medical school at the University of Michigan. They married August 13, 1950 and moved to Tecumseh in 1953. In addition to Catherine, April, and Margaret, they were also parents to Patricia, William, and Jennifer.

Miller said she recently found letters her mother had written to her father from 1948 to 1950. “They wrote to each other each day,” she said. “They chose Tecumseh because Dad had done an internship with a doctor here.” Mrs. Cook died in 2012.

The sisters recall Cathy as being “dedicated to caring for her patients.”

“She had a big heart,” Gunder said.

“She was a woman and a doctor, and she had tenacity. Once she set her mind on something, she did it.”

The junior Dr. Cook was a single mother for many years and was completely devoted to her daughter, Jessica, and son John Nathan, as well as her two grandchildren.

“She loved them so much,” Gunder said.

Both Gunder and Miller are still in touch with some of the many au pairs their sister hired to help care for her children. “She would have au pairs from other countries, they’d stay for a year, and she’d take them into her world,” said Gunder. “They stayed in touch with her. They adored her.”

The Cook physicians shared a love for horses as well as music and Dr. Carlton Cook spent a lot of time at his daughter’s

Macon farm, riding on his own or with his daughter.

Gunder said her late sister never let anything stop her and she took care of everyone. “She was very supportive of LGBTQ and would find the current situation with Roe v. Wade unacceptable,” Gunder said. “She was a model daughter for Dad. Dad went there every day. They were close, tight.” She also loved theater, Miller said.

“Cathy built relationships with physicians and nurses, she was kind, smart, and generous, and strong mentally,” said Miller. “She was determined. She knew what she wanted, and she did it. She was the toughest of the sisters.” n

MEANT TO BEE Bees have been a bit of an obsession for JIM JANECZEK since he was a student at Saline Middle School. But it took 45 years before he was able to make his dreams of beekeeping a reality.

He tells his story as he conducts a tour of the Grange Hall Road Apiary in Tecumseh Township, also known as Janeczek’s backyard. “My seventhgrade teacher, Mr. King, was a beekeeper,” Janeczek explains, pulling out a honeycombed tray from the manmade hive. “He gave a lecture about bees and then he brought in a book about bees and loaned it out to whoever wanted to read it. And I did. And he eventually had to ask for it back because I read it over and over. It stuck in my mind.”

The beehives are stacks of wooden boxes painted in different colors, some white, some pink, some blue. The bottom box features what he calls a “landing zone,” a slanted piece that juts out for bees to enter and exit the hive. Inside the middle box are eight frames which sit horizontally, similar to a file cabinet. There is a small space between each one. Janeczek pulls one of these frames out to show where the bees make the honey. These are pre-

formed to make it easier for both the bees and the beekeeper, he explains.

It speeds up the honey-making process.

Bees buzz around the yard, going back and forth from a flowering crab tree and the hive’s entrance.

“Five years ago, at the age of 52, I got the opportunity to try this,” he said. “The first year, it didn’t work out at all. The bees left as soon as I put them in the box. The second year, I started with two colonies and ended up with seven, due to splitting and swarming. They all made it through the winter and the third year I ended up with 14 colonies.”

To build up his knowledge, Janeczek said he took classes on bees and beekeeping at Matthei Botanical Gardens. He started out in the beginner class, a 10-month course.

Each month the students would spend four hours learning what the bees would do in the next month so they could prepare. He continued with the intermediate class, then the advanced class in Novi through the MSU Extension program, and read books, attended lectures and visited farms with a thousand beehive boxes.

As he talks, he lifts the lid off one hive. The bees are fairly calm and busily crawling around in and out of an oval-shaped hole, where there is a sticky residue Janeczek said is called “bee propolis,” also known as “bee glue,” tree resin they gather from buds and cracks in tree bark. The bees add secretions to the resin by chewing on it and then add beeswax to it. Worker bees use this as a construction material to cover the interior of the hive and seal the boxes and the lid. They also use the bee glue to cover individual honey combs where eggs and pollen are stored.

“In the fall and in the spring, I cut the cap of wax off and that’s how I get the honey out,” he explained.

Janeczek sells his harvested honey locally under his Grange Hall Apiary label, and Arlo and Alisyn Brandl of Tecumseh Bread and Pastry use Janeczek’s honey in their bakery products.

The apiary is very labor intensive, he said. “It’s a lot of work and it’s fairly expensive to get started, but there are a lot of people doing it now.”

Janeczek grew up in Saline and attended Eastern Michigan University.

He is a design engineer at Uniloy in Tecumseh, working primarily with plastic molded containers. His wife, Kim, also a Saline native, is a teacher at Lincoln Consolidated Schools and helps with the apiary. They have three children, Alex, Abby, and Aubrey.

Janeczek has two other hive locations, both in farm fields that have gone fallow and now have wildflowers, trees, and a water source. The water is very important for bees, he said. In fact, on his deck he has a large dish filled with water, which is regularly crowded with bees from the hives. A few buzz around and in and out of the water, carrying droplets with them to the hive.

“Bees use a lot of water,” he said.

Bees also are keen hive-keepers.

They keep their hives clean, even clearing out dead bees. In fact, as some bees are entering the hive with pollen tucked under their legs like tiny yellow footballs, others are pushing a dead bee out through the entrance and onto the ground.

Janeczek said the colonies grow quickly. The queen is shaped slightly different from the rest of the hive. Her thorax is about 1-3/4 times bigger than the average bee. All of the worker bees are female bees, while the drones are males.

“The female bees do all the work, they gather the pollen, make the honey, and take care of the incubating bees,” Janeczek said. “The drones have one purpose in life and that is to mate with the queen and create more bees.

They basically hang around and wait for the queen to fly by.”

Once the queen has mated with many drones, she returns to the hive and lays eggs. It takes about three weeks for the baby bees to mature.

“In the fall, the girl bees don’t let the drones back in,” he said. “The queen lays the eggs in the combs.

I usually leave about 80 pounds of honey in the hive for the colony for the winter. The bees will make a tight cluster around the queen and then the cluster moves around the hive, the heat

of it thawing out the frozen honey so that they can move around and eat the honey all winter.”

The queen and all of her “ladies” will outgrow the box rather quickly, Janeczek said. “The old queen will take about half the colony and swarm,” he said. “They come out like someone turned a faucet on. There are hundreds, thousands maybe, and the swarm is about the size of a basketball. They’ll usually go to a tree nearby.”

When this happens, Janeczek will get a ladder, climb up and shake the swarm into a bucket.

“They are all around the queen,” he said. “They’re trying to figure out what she wants to do. Then I’ll bring them to a new box.”

About a week after this interview, Janeczek demonstrated his skills with a swarm. The colony had broken off from a larger hive in a black walnut tree and settled on a large limb in a yard. Janeczek brought a hive over and set it near the fallen branch. Then he donned his beekeeper’s hat and gloves and picked up the branch. With a swift motion, he slammed the branch onto the top of the open hive. Bees began crawling around the top and sides of the hive. He slammed it again, and the last of the bees fell off. Some retaliated and flew after Janeczek, and he took off at a dead run, brushing the bees away. Once he returned, he still had a dozen or so on the back of his shirt and on his pantleg, but he was able to sweep them

n any given day, one can look out onto the rippling waters of Evans Lake and see people on stand-up paddle boards (SUP), and a good share of them are enjoying one of several classes offered by Karen Stipe of Sandy Bottom Adventures.

These are not typical classes. From Mornings and Mimosas to Pilates and Paddleboards and Sunset SUP and Sip, her dream was to bring something unique to the Irish Hills. “I like to be around people who like to have fun, and no one was doing anything like this in the area,” said Stipe, who teaches physical education during the school year. She took a trip to Tennessee where she became a certified personal trainer, and brought back new ways for local residents to stay active.

In addition to the SUP classes, she also offers Paddleboard Yoga. “We don’t do super-crazy poses,” Stipe said. “We will do poses like the Warrior and poses on the knees, though the more adventurous can try some harder poses.” Those who are hesitant to do yoga on a paddleboard, or are new to yoga, need not be intimidated.

“The poses can all be modified. Not only are the poses modified, but the boards are a bit wider,” she said. “You can still straddle the board, but they are wide enough to accommodate the movement.” She also recently added SUPBALL, which she described as “Rugby on a paddleboard,” a more strenuous physical activity.

This is Stipe’s second year in business, and she has added more to the mix beyond offering classes. Rentals are available for SUPs, kayaks, and aqua pads for floating in the water. Stipe pointed out how the fishing kayaks differ from standard kayaks. “These are a more durable kayak and can hold a bit more weight than the standard kayak for tackle and other fishing supplies, and they have pole holders,” she said.

She also offers activities for events, such as wedding showers, an idea that came to her while speaking with Alan Macher and Thomas Emerson, owners of Evans Lake Resort. “There is an island on Evans Lake with a rental house, and they said a group rented it for a bachelorette party and mentioned it was too bad they didn’t know about the paddleboards,” said Stipe. The idea of adding events was born.

“I can do these events and take the boards with me,” she said, noting that her business isn’t exclusive to Evans Lake. “I can bring the board – ‘have boards, will travel’ – to Devil’s Lake, Sand Lake. I can go to them.”

Classes are affordable.

“I just want people to come and have fun,” she said. At its core, this is what the business is all about for Stipe. “I just want people to smile, have fun, exercise and have community together – that is what was behind the classes like Morning and Mimosas – people getting to know other people and having fun.”

She asks that people try paddleboarding. “It’s not as hard as you think, and it’s fun,” said Stipe. n Those participating in classes can rent a SUP for a nominal fee or bring their own. THERE’S NO PLACE LIKE HOME. In their 1965 hit song “My Generation,” the rock band The Who sang “I hope I die before I get old.” Now in their late 70s and preparing to go on tour this year, The Who may be singing a slightly different tune.

In recent years, original band members Roger Daltry and Pete Townshend have required hearing aids to keep playing their music. Just like the rest of us, even rock stars are finding some form of disability can come with age, but it doesn’t have to mean the end of what we know and love – or where we live.

Take longtime Adrian residents Diane and Bill Rauser, for example. Diane said that about a year ago the couple started talking about how aging may eventually change their housing needs, and they wanted to be proactive about it. The decision they eventually settled on is an increasingly popular choice called “aging in place,” but it wasn’t an immediately apparent one.

“We are the baby boomers,” said Diane, “and I said to my husband Bill one day, ‘Which nursing home did you want to go into if you fall and break your hip?’ And he was like, ‘What?!’ But I said, ‘No, I’m serious. We have a two-story house, and the stairs are steep, and if anything were to happen, there’s no way I’m running up and down those stairs to take care of you, so which nursing home would it be?’”

That conversation, which she retells with humor in the way long-married couples sometimes rib each other, hit home enough that it became, she said, “the impetus for us to start looking for single-story, one family homes.”

But there was also a truth in her jest: Diane’s elderly mother had lived with the couple for a time in their lowerlevel bedroom that had its own bath. “She had everything she

needed, but all she had to do was get up the stairs [to the main floor],” Diane said. “Well, it was awful because she was falling, and you can’t live like that. So that was probably on the back of my mind.”

The Rausers knew they wanted to stay in Adrian, but the more they looked, the more discouraged they became. “We couldn’t find anything that we thought would work for us,” Diane said. Not only were there few options available for their needs, but even fewer options checked the boxes for their wants.

Thirty-three years ago, in 1989, the Rausers built their home in Adrian on what Diane calls their “idyllic, magnificent setting.” They put in a deck and a swimming pool, raised their three children, and eventually grandchildren came along, too. Diane, who owns the SASS gift store in downtown Adrian, sometimes has her 15-year-old granddaughter help in the store after school. “We have a big family, and we get together all the time,” she said. Their home was rich with memories that were still being made.

The Rausers didn’t want to leave their home, but they didn’t see how they could stay.

“We looked at all the options, but nothing made sense,” Diane said. “We couldn’t imagine our life outside of that house, but we knew we had to do something.” They weren’t alone in their thinking. A 2018 AARP survey showed that almost 80% of older adults want to maintain their independence and live in their own home as long as possible, but fewer than 50% think it will be feasible.

As the challenges of finding a new place to live mounted, the help of some friends came in. Diane had invited realtor Sherry

Beaubien over to get some suggestions on how to renovate their only first-floor bathroom, a half-bath, if they were to stay in the house. She said Sherry offered a few ideas but then told her, “What you really need is an architect.”

nter Brenda Rigdon. “Good thing you knew one,” interjected Brenda, principal of Black Raven Architects in Adrian. Diane laughed with a vigorous nod. “In general, in the home industry, there was a huge boom [in renovations], with people suddenly realizing with COVID, especially, what if one of us gets sick, what if we have to isolate, or have mobility issues? It was a wake-up call for a lot of people,” said Brenda. “We really want to help find solutions for people like Bill and Diane so they can stay in the house they’ve been in and not have to deal with a big disruption in their lives.”

Staying in one’s home in senior years with a consistent and even improved quality of life is the main idea of aging in place. But as Brenda’s comments suggest, aging in place doesn’t mean merely staying put. It requires careful planning for accessibility and safety and involves a clear-eyed examination of physical, emotional, social, and financial needs and resources.

When Bill and Diane initially began thinking about how they might stay in their home, they considered adding on a first-floor bedroom and bathroom. “But the cost was almost prohibitive,” Diane said. Friends and family offered well-meaning suggestions, but it wasn’t until they met with Brenda that the Rausers came to see how their existing space could be customized in ways that would suit them now, in the future, and would make

their home more open, accessible, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) friendly. “That’s been the important thing, the ADA stuff,” Diane said. “Basically, the entire back half of the first floor has been renovated, with the exception of the kitchen, though it was expanded.”

First floor halls and doorways were widened to accommodate a wheelchair or walker. Adding an elevator was considered, but the couple ultimately decided against it. Diane said, “You have to decide what you’re giving up when you do some things, and we just decided the elevator wasn’t going to be an option for us.”

The Rausers’ home already had a main-floor laundry, but their seldomused formal dining room was repurposed to make way for a full bath. The

elimination of the dining room, in turn, allowed for a three-foot expansion of the existing eat-in kitchen. The first-floor study was converted into a bedroom, with a redesigned closet that houses a desk and computer as well as a TV that can be adjusted to watch from the bed.

Double doors were installed so the newly renovated area on the first floor can be closed off into a private suite with a living room, bedroom, and ADA compliant bathroom. The door to the bathroom has a five-foot radius so a wheelchair can be turned around inside, and a vanity was installed with wheelchair accessibility.

The walk-in shower has grab bars, a builtin seat, a handheld showerhead, and room enough for one person to assist another.

But possible mobility issues aren’t the only considerations for aging in place.

“We practically doubled the amount of lighting in our house because as you get older you don’t see as well. We were already noticing it, and we’re not even old yet,” said Diane.

“It’s a real issue if you start tripping on things on the floor because you’re not seeing that well,” added Brenda. The Rausers eliminated hallway rugs that had once covered wood floors and, except for the carpeted living room, replaced most of the flooring in their house with new non-slip luxury vinyl tile.

s an architect, Brenda understands building codes and ADA standards; as a mother, she has “a heightened perspective to ADA issues,” she said, as her adult daughter has spent her entire life in a wheelchair. But Brenda

The Rausers were able to live in their house with minor inconvenience while all the renovations took place, according to Diane. “Every single detail, [Rigdon] laid it out for us to do, and we did it,” she said.

Diane loves the new changes and how they accommodate her life right now. Of the expanded kitchen, she said, “I got a much bigger area for a table and bought the biggest table I could find. And I got the coolest thing… a custom space with shelves for all my platters, napkins, and paper plates, and with a light so I can see everything. And the shelves were reused from the former study. I love coming in every day and looking at that table and knowing my whole family can eat in that room together now.”

“You couldn’t do that if you had moved into a condo,” said Brenda. “We’re all about reusing and customizing. The move is towards more flexible space.”

THE KIWANIS CLUB OF TECUMSEH’S

mission is to ‘Serve the Children of the World’. “This year the Club is celebrating their 66th anniversary,” boasts current president, Mike McAran. “For the past 66 years, Kiwanis members have been very active in serving the local community through various service and fundraising projects for the benefit of youth, senior citizens, and the community as a whole.”

The club supports many projects in the community including the Tecumseh Service Club, Newsong Community Church Food Pantry, and Community Learning Connections.

Kiwanis also provides financial support for the high school swim team and the Robotics program. The Kiwanis-sponsored Key Club at the high school, the Builders Club at the middle school and K-Kids at the elementary schools provide students with leadership training. The club awards scholarships annually to high school seniors, with a portion of the funds coming from the Flag Project. This year, Kiwanis awarded $13,200 to 12 students according to Scholarship Committee Chair Susan Gilmore.

While the flag project is just one of the many fund-raisers Kiwanis members hold to support community programs, it is the most important. “We started the flag project nine years ago, and the community has enthusiastically supported it,” Wendy Brys, past President of the club, said. “It continues to grow in popularity each year. Right now, club members distribute and collect a little over 1,200 flags to subscribers for six national holidays.” Flag subscriptions are $35 annually and Kiwanis members do all the work of setting up, collecting, and storing the flags. Flags can be ordered online or on the club’s Facebook page.

The Kiwanis Club of Tecumseh meets in person and virtually (via Zoom) every Tuesday at 7am at the Tecumseh United Methodist Church on Bishop Reed Drive.

With a housing shortage in many areas, increased home building costs, and the challenges many families faced while trying to live, work, and learn at home during a pandemic, transforming existing home space for greater accessibility can also be a good home investment. Diane said her realtor friend, Sherry, “told us not to worry about the value of the house after putting this money into it, because people are starting to look for double masters and there’s not a lot of them around here.”

ADA standards, based on principles of universal design, “work for everyone,” Brenda said. They simply make getting around easier and safer. While aging in place may not be a suitable option for all seniors, home renovation is typically less expensive than buying a new place or building an addition. Coming up with universal design features in a home, she said, is about “being creative and thinking outside the box” while working within a client’s budget.

“Imagine how many baby boomers there are out there,” said Diane. “All these people are waking up and realizing, uh-oh, now what do we do? And it’s too late to do anything if you wait until you’re in the hospital or your spouse is in the hospital, and you have decisions you have to make.

“We never thought you could do what we just did,” she said. “It has taken a lot off my plate, and we still have all the room for

the kids and grandkids when they come home. It’s everything I always wanted and didn’t realize when we first built the house.

It’s more open and somehow feels bigger.

I’d give anything to have my parents moving into this space now.”

A 2020 U.S. Census Bureau report shows that between 2010 and 2020, the 65 and over population, mostly baby boomers born between 1946 and 1964, grew 32.4%, faster than any other age demographic in that time. By 2030, 70 million Americans – about 20% – will be over the age of 65.

The Rausers’ home renovations are now complete. “It’s gorgeous and we’re very happy with it,” said Diane. It was also done in the nick of time because one of them very unexpectedly needed the accessibility features. “We’re just fortunate enough that it was done in time for when we needed it,” she said, “because you never know when that might happen.” n

or me, there has always been a special attraction to be around water. From learning to swim at the Devils Lake Yacht Club with my siblings in the early 1960’s…to spending time with my cousins at their Round Lake cottage. I have numerous childhood memories in the Irish Hills growing up — all these experiences have concluded that life is truly better at the lake!

A wonderful attribute to this location is that this building housed the well-established Teller Realty Brokerage for nearly 40 years.

Their pink colored shell signs could be seen everywhere from waterfront living homes to second tier residences and all around the Irish Hills area over the years.

Barbara and George Teller along with Doris Sipel and Mary Lou Vreeland started the lake office in December of 1980. Barb Himburg and Marilyn Allen joined later.

Lenawee Habitat has been in operation since 1989 as an affordable housing ministry. According to Carrie Hartley, development director, “the families purchase the homes, and they also invest two hundred hours of sweat equity. They are responsible for the mortgage, and it is never over 30% of their income – we never want to see anyone go into a home they can’t afford.” If that happens, she said, credit counseling is offered. “We have seen people make huge strides.”

Along with building homes, Lenawee Habitat is involved with home repair. Hartley said the repair program is in every part of the county. “From aging in place modifications to roofs, providing repairs is critical to staying in a home,” she said. “This area has older than average house stock – more than half the homes (in Lenawee County) are over 50 years old.”

Habitat Lenawee gets things done for the most part with volunteers, from builds, to repairs, to staffing the Habitat ReStore. De’Angelo Boone, volunteer and community outreach manager, noted that the ReStore only has a few employees. “The volunteer base includes greeters, those involved in processing, cleaning, merchandising,” he said, stating that the store would not be able to function as well without them. That can be said of the entirety of Habitat’s volunteer base. “We have some that have volunteered for years, and that’s impressive,” said Boone.

Lenawee Habitat is currently involved in Rock the Block in Onsted, an ongoing program where neighbors help neighbors.

“Volunteers do brush work, porch repairs, paint trim,” said Boone. “It helps us engage with the area and is a positive experience, and the volunteers come from throughout the county. It’s a real community active collective – everyone gets involved.” Hartley added that Rock the Block is more visible than repair projects because it’s all outdoors.

“Whenever we build, it’s a vacant lot or blight property, but with this, it’s a good image of their home, they can see it and it’s good for the community,” she said.

Rock the Block is typically a two-year project, and they are halfway through the Onsted project. When ready, they will announce where they are going next. “If community members see a need, reach out,” Hartley encouraged.

These types of events are what drew Hartley to work for Habitat of Humanity of Lenawee County. “I was looking for a new opportunity and I like what we do here. We are the only housing program that serves like we do,” she said. “There is room for growth, for me and Habitat.”

Boone was an onboard truck ambassador for the ReStore when, after working there a month, he heard about the position he has now.

He is passionate about community and neighborhood revitalization, and the community collaborative of “committing to a community who is disenfranchised and marginalized,” he said. “With backing from political figures and service organizations, Habitat has been able to improve quality of life of historic east Adrian.”

Age is not an issue if someone wants to volunteer, according to Hartley. “We accept all ages of volunteers. Construction work is for those 18 and up only, but we work with all age groups. There is a place for everyone,” she said. Boone added that Habitat is working with Morenci Schools, juvenile facilities, and Adrian High School, and the work there fulfills required volunteer hours.

interesting volunteer opportunity is Women Build, which allows women to work on a house to gain experience they can then use at home on do-it-yourself projects. Boone noted that one group poured cement for a sidewalk – turned, poured, and set. Another group built a deck. “They take away these experiences,” said Boone, “and continue to volunteer on other projects.” Boone said there is a construction leader with them, and no experience is needed.

Habitat Lenawee also has a Veterans Build which is a Habitat for Humanity national program. The program provides housing, volunteer, and employment opportunities not only to veterans, but also to military personnel and their families. According to their website, habitat.org, a Veteran Build home is taking place on Spring Street in Adrian.

Because Habitat is a nonprofit organization, it relies not only on volunteers, but also on donations and fundraisers. Their Farm to Table Dinner fundraiser will be held Saturday, August 27 at Adrian College. Farm to Table started in 2019 on the 30th anniversary of the Habitat of Lenawee opening, featuring family-style dining. The COVID-19 pandemic led to the event's cancellation, but in 2021 it was back, but modified. “We had a good time, but we will be back to family-style dining, with monitoring to see what best practice is (due to ongoing COVID cases).”

She is looking forward to it. “We don’t do a lot – just come, have fellowship, hear about Habitat,” said Hartley. “This is our signature event. We offer local foods – we have meat from Hartley Beef, chicken from Garno Farms.

FRESH GARDEN SALSA 5-7 medium tomatoes - cored and diced small, about 4 cups diced tomatoes 1 large green bell pepper - diced small 1 medium sweet onion - diced small 3 cloves garlic - minced 2 jalapenos - diced small, seeds removed if less heat is desired Juice of 2 limes 1 bunch cilantro - leaves and tender stems chopped 2 teaspoons kosher salt Fresh ground black pepper to taste Wash and dry all produce. Core, slice, and dice tomatoes and place in large bowl. Cut green pepper, onion, and jalapenos in a small dice and mince the garlic. Add to the bowl with the tomatoes and then add the chopped cilantro, salt, lime juice, and pepper. Stir to combine and taste, adding more lime juice, salt, or other ingredients as desired.

Sarah grew up in the kitchen making recipes such as homemade macaroni and cheese, roasted vegetables, and applesauce. She made it a point to learn how to make her grandma’s apple pie on her own and enjoyed canning produce from the family garden. Sarah’s love for cooking piqued at the age of 13, and she was cooking regularly by the time she was in high school. “I can be creative with food. I like how good food tastes, and I like to make food the way I want it to taste. I have a lot of good memories cooking with family,” she said.

“I learned how to cook with my mom and dad when I was little. We would bake as a family. My dad would make the pie crust, I helped my mom with the fruit and filling, and my sister ate the pie dough,” said Sarah with a laugh. Sarah’s uncle was a farmer in Blissfield, and freezing corn every year was a family event. “We would gather at my aunt and uncle’s house because that’s where the corn was grown. Now, my cousin, his son does the planting. The kids would help pick the corn and fill up the back of the pick-up truck. Then we would bring it back to the house where my mom, grandma, and aunts would shuck it, cut it off the cob, and blanch it. There was enough for every family to take home about 30-40 pints. We still do this although not as many people help as when I was little,” Sarah explained.

Married to Jeremy and mother to three busy children under the age of 11, Sarah chooses to cook almost everything from scratch. Many of her meals are planned by what is in season and from her own gorgeous garden. “I have always been interested in eating healthy food without too many preservatives, and it’s the way my mom and grandma cooked.

We don’t just open a box or a jar of sauce,” she said.

When she finds a complicated recipe she is excited for the challenge. She also

is a fan of menu planning. Repeating the same categories of food the same day of the week helps Sarah manage her time and keeps meals predictable for the kids.

When they know what to expect they often eat with less fuss, she said.

A typical weekly menu for the Hankes would be a pasta night; Mexinight always with homemade guacamole and fresh salsa; a soup and sandwich night; and a Friday pizza night usually with homemade personal pizzas so everyone can help and choose their own toppings. “We grill a lot of other nights in the summer, like hotdogs, hamburgers, steak, and the best thing is a classic B.L.T. with fresh garden tomato!” exclaimed Sarah.

Because she loves to be creative and cook everything from scratch, she is also passing on that love to her three children by letting them help her in the kitchen with some of the same things she loved learning to cook as a child. “The kids get excited about helping me cook.

Amelia and Charlotte especially love to help me make homemade granola and granola bars every week,” said Sarah.

“They also help me make macaroni and cheese and scrambled eggs, they help peel vegetables, and of course they love stirring. Everyone pitches in to make applesauce; it is something we always did as a family.”

One of Sarah’s favorite things to make in the summer is salsa. “I love garden tomatoes and fresh cilantro, and salsa is something I often helped my mom with when I was a teenager,” she said. “It’s not difficult to make but it requires a lot of chopping and knife skills.” She uses tomatoes, peppers, jalapenos and cilantro from her garden when they are available, or she buys them along with garlic and onions at the local farmer’s market. “Charlotte’s job is to peel the garlic,” Sarah said as she smiled at her youngest perched on the counter. Charlotte was happy as could be helping her mom and tasting the finished product. It is easy to imagine these memories in the kitchen being something she will cherish someday and pass on to the next generation. n

When Justin and Kayla Jones

opened Justin of the Land and Sea Pottery Studio at 210 S. Evans St. in Tecumseh earlier this year, their dreams to offer art classes to children and adults in the community was just beginning.

Now the Tecumseh residents have created a summer art camp schedule that will introduce local children to a variety of art media through various themes.

The first camp session is set for the week of June 13. Children ages four through seven may attend the camps Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m.-noon, and those ages eight and older will attend from 1-4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The theme for the week of June 13 is “Superheroes.” Subsequent weeks include “Magical and Mythical” starting June 20; “Ocean” the week of June 27; “Nature and Plants” starting July 11; “Jungle” the week of July 18; and “Sports” beginning the week of July 25. The fee for each weekly summer camp is $125.

While in June and July they will concentrate on the summer camps, they will eventually return to the homeschool art program and adult and tot classes they have been offering. “We’re going to start those back up in August,” said Kayla. She also mentioned that they plan to offer ceramics classes at the studio but have been delayed because their electrical service is not able to accommodate

STUDENT the kilns to fire the ceramic pieces.

Currently they transport Justin’s wheelthrown pottery and Kayla’s hand-built pottery to the kilns at their home, but as soon as Consumers Energy upgrades the transformer near the business, they will take the steps to bring the kilns to the studio. “As soon as the transformer is done, everything else will get done pretty much immediately,” she said.

The Joneses got into the pottery business during the start of the pandemic when they decided to homeschool their two daughters, who are in elementary school. “My husband was a tennis instructor, and when COVID hit the tennis club shut down, so he was unemployed for a while there,” Kayla said. They bought an inexpensive tabletop pottery wheel and Justin realized that making pottery was his passion.

Last year the couple became vendors at Tecumseh’s Farmers Market and found community support for their creations. Both are now making pottery full time, and Kayla, who always wanted to be an art teacher, is able to follow that dream. One

of the most difficult things a parent must do is to entrust their child’s care to another person. Sometimes, this moment comes when a parent sends their child off to kindergarten for the first time, but often it comes sooner.

As more parents work outside of the home, many are letting someone other than family, care for their child while they are at work, sometimes for children as young as six weeks.

Parents with questions about facility licensing, qualifications, capacity, teacher to child ratio, hours of operation, curriculum, cost, and discipline policy can find answers by visiting the provider’s website or inquiring by phone.

The tougher questions can only be answered by touring the daycare and interviewing the provider.

Homefront spoke to Tracy Pilbeam, owner of Friends and Family Daycare of Clinton, which opened its doors a year ago this June. Pilbeam first opened her own in-home childcare in 1994. Homefront also talked to Debbie Dusseau, owner of Best Friends Daycare and Preschool of Tecumseh. Best Friends Daycare has been in business for 32 years, first as a family registered home in 1991 and then expanding to a group license in 1996. Debbie’s husband, Scott, is a partner in the business.

shower the teachers there with love and help with the building expansion. “The funds we raise help provide the teachers with supplies above and beyond the normal budget, things that may be out of reach,” explained Fleck, PTO president.

“We had been to probably 10 or more daycares before we met Tracy. We instantly fell in love with the environment. It was clean and so well organized.

Tracy had done a phenomenal job of dividing up the center with art, imagination, and other activities that provided opportunities for development for all the ages including the babies,” said Carrie Houghton, mother of two.

When Pilbeam was asked if there had been any children that have tugged at her heart, she talked about Houghton’s son, Cole, and instantly teared up at saying his name. “I used to only take children early in life when I was in home, so

Friends and Family Daycare, the children thrive off structure and schedules. “It is my mission to not just be a daycare center, but more of a school. Every teacher is expected to have a curriculum. Even the infant room does circle time three times a day,” Pilbeam tells me as she shows me around to each of her five different classrooms.

Lynn Fleck immediately felt supported when she enrolled her two children at the facility. “When Friends and Family first opened my daughter was the only child enrolled in the pre-toddler room, and Tracy hired a teacher just for her until more children her age enrolled,” Fleck said. Pilbeam’s goal is to alleviate stress and worry for the parent. “Tracy and her staff go above and beyond,” said Asa Jay, a single father of two children. “They have stayed late with no hesitation when I have called because I was running late from work.”

Stability is a significant aspect when searching for a childcare.

Children need to form trust and attachment to their caregivers as a source of comfort. Joe Hart, who has been with Friends and Family for more than five years, believes he found this stability. “Tracy and Friends and Family have been steady in Lark’s life, and we cannot imagine going anywhere

else with a baby on the way,” Hart said. “You come in as a friend and you leave as family. Friends and Family treats every kid like their own.”

Pilbeam is building a foundation for her family for generations to come, as her daughter, Kaitlyn Zeller, is now the director. Zeller grew up helping in the home daycare and now has a bachelor’s degree in early education.

When asked if she thought her mother would step down as she establishes her new role, Zeller said, “My mom is a very hard worker and she will be there for a long time, and I will be right here also.” Pilbeam had to adjust to not being involved in every aspect of the business, but now she bounces around to every class, reading a story in the toddler room in the morning or singing silly songs in the preschool room in the afternoon.

A group of parents approached Pilbeam about starting a parentteacher organization (PTO). A PTO in a childcare is practically unheard of, but the parents wanted to be involved and Pilbeam was thrilled to support them. The PTO meets once a month to talk about things they would like to see implemented at the center.

They then come to Pilbeam with their suggestions, and she makes them happen. The PTO at Friends and Family have already raised money to

they grew to me,” said Pilbeam. “I almost didn’t take Cole. I knew his mom was going to be tough to please. But Cole, he was my kid. He went to kindergarten, and when he left me, it was hard. I miss him, and I think of him all the time.” As most parents, Houghton did have reservations about leaving her baby. “Cole to this day, misses her. He thought of Tracy as a second mom, her daycare as a second home,” she said. “It was magic.”

The mutual love Pilbeam and her families share for each other is evident during pick-up time. Every single parent, and every single child that passed her door on the way home for the night, stopped to say good-bye. That is a testament of a person who loves what she does, and loves where she is, and Pilbeam is clearly loved back by her family at Family and Friends Daycare.

girls look forward to going to daycare, they share their experiences with a positive attitude, and they talk about daycare in the evenings and on the weekends. Debbie and Scott have the special touch when it comes to their meals,” said Kendra Wegman, mother of two girls enrolled at the facility. “I joke with Debbie all the time that they need to write a BFDC Cookbook for all of the parents, so that we can emulate their food prep and cooking during our mealtimes at home. “Debbie and Scott have created a loving and caring environment. They hold high expectations for all children to be kind, respectful, and responsible,” Wegman said.

Dusseau strongly believes in structure in her daycare, “Routines and transition times are an important part of life,” she said. “Children learn skills such as self help, independence, sequencing and how to act appropriately in a group by taking part in routines.”

Wegman explained how the daycare has supported her through the challenge of their youngest daughter developing a rare and severe life-threatening food allergy called Food Protein-Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome (FPIES) as an infant.

“We were very reluctant to send her to anyone except family, especially somewhere with multiple children, out of fear of her being exposed to her trigger foods on accident. After multiple meetings with Debbie and Scott about her food allergies and the protocols that they would put into place to ensure the safety of our daughter, we decided to enroll with them. They have been supportive, understanding, and advocates for our daughter and others with individualized health and medical needs. Our comfort with having our daughters in Debbie and Scott’s care has impacted our family in such a positive way.”

“Debbie posts videos (on a parent approved and private/secure page) of the children singing, reading, or reciting a chant or rhyme. The videos are evidence of laughter and fun,” said Wegman.

Dusseau has been dedicated to Tecumseh for 32 years and she believes every community needs to be invested in the welfare of all children. “Children are the future and will be making decisions that will affect us at some point. We have to help shape and mold these little people to become outstanding decision makers who also show empathy, compassion, forethought and kindness,” she said. “Some of the most important wiring of our brains takes place in the first five years. Children’s early experiences and the quality of their care and relationships are crucial during this time.

Our role in early education can have an impact on a child’s entire life. That is powerful.”

She believes parents and caregivers have to be a team to benefit the child. “When they choose us, we want them to feel that they have made the best choice for their child for a long-term relationship. It is always our goal to work with families from birth through elementary to build a solid foundation. Our main priority when we accept families is that we communicate well and feel that ‘unspoken connection’ that this is a good fit on both sides.”

Best Friends Daycare The couple feels honored to be supported and loved by the families they have served. “We build a bond as extended family, and work as a united team to help shape their little people,” she said. The daycare has applied for grants to improve their playground, pool area and educational curriculum, and the Dusseaus were able to apply for state funding and credit a portion of their weekly childcare bill to all the families who stuck by them during the pandemic. “During the start of the COVID pandemic, our families could not bring their children for care unless they were essential workers,” she said, noting that families had continued payment to keep their child’s position in the facility and to insure that the business would survive the economic situation.

Dusseau said that every child has impacted her life over the years, “We could write a book and probably should,” she said. “You never know what will happen or what funny thing will be said.” It’s easy to see the Dusseaus’ lives have been filled with purpose, and they have bonded with every “little person” that has been entrusted into their care.

Both Friends and Family Daycare and Best Friends Daycare maintain regular communication with their families, either by sending home folders of work and messages or using an app to keep in touch.

Just as every child is unique, every daycare is also unique in what they have to offer. There is a daycare and a caregiver out there waiting to fill your child’s life with love, education, and memories that will impact their growth and your family forever. n

How you feel when you walk into a potential childcare facility is a good place to begin. A parent can get a good feeling from how they are greeted. Do you hear singing, laughing, crying being comforted?

Does it feel safe? It is clean? Are the teachers smiling?

An opportunity to observe how the caregivers interact with children can be key to finding quality care for a child. Facial expression, tone of voice, and physical touch are crucial for early childhood development. If you observe the caregivers holding a child, making eye contact, being at a child’s level of play, and expressing kindness or care, you may be in the right place. Do the children look like they are having fun? Do the caregivers look engaged and like they want to be there?

How is the childcare structured?

What is the daily routine? Structure and routine are incredibly helpful for children of all ages beginning at birth. When children can predict what comes next it helps their behavior and overall learning and growth.

Will there be a mutual support between parents and caregiver?

How will the caregiver communicate to the parent and how often?

Stability is a significant aspect when searching for a childcare facility. Do the caregivers have experience and a passion for children? How long have the caregivers been employed at the facility? Is the staff invested in the childcare? Children need to form trust and attachment to their caregivers as a source of comfort.

Constant change in caregivers can be difficult on the child.

Anyone looking for care should contact providers for interviews and tours. Plan to visit several facilities to make the best choice for your family. Ask to be placed on a waiting list if enrollment is full, even if you are early into planning your family.

Parents should be encouraged by the countless childcare facilities in the area to choose from, each offering its own special environment, program, and opportunities.

Locust in the Sandbox by local author Cynthia Gray

he found the silver lining to the pandemic! While hunkered down at home, Cynthia Gray wrote the novel that had been swirling around in her head and heart – Locust in the Sandbox.

In 1963, four young girls were killed in the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. The tragedy has haunted Gray since she heard Walter Cronkite relating what was known about the horrific event on his evening broadcast all those years ago.

Gray was about the age of the youngest girl killed.

Throughout her life, she has often thought of those girls, their families, and the lack of immediate and swift justice for the crime. With a desire to bring their story to an audience that may not be familiar with the church bombing or its historical significance, Gray hoped to write a book. Her intention was to remember these young lives lost to senseless violence through a narrative that celebrates the positivity and healing that can be derived from practicing service to others. The COVID pandemic gave her the time and the opportunity to concentrate on doing just that.

Locust in the Sandbox is that book. An intriguing title, the author tells us in the author’s note that “Locust” refers to “that person, place or thing that is not good or right or helpful” and “Sandbox” “refers to that space where one lives, works… our home, our community”.

This is a historical novel, a coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of the civil rights movement and the tragedy of the bombing with its lack of justice for the girls and their families.

The story opens with Josie Bee Johnson on her way to church. She is running late and is almost there when a bomb placed in the church’s basement by the Ku Klux Klan goes off. But for her tardiness, Josie could have been one of the girls killed. She is deeply affected by this event. As a result, she begins to question everything – her faith, her family, and her community. As her thoughts turn to revenge and

Throughout the course of the novel, we watch as Josie goes from a self-centered, immature young woman to a compassionate, giving person. Through the trials and tribulations in the story, we see Josie develop into someone who cares for others and strives to serve them as best she can, thereby becoming her best self.

Written with passion, the novel illustrates that Gray has a sincere commitment to living a life of service and faith. A resident of Adrian since the mid1970s, she has long been an advocate for children and their safety, was trained as a teacher, and worked for several years as a substitute teacher for Lenawee Christian School. She is currently writing a book discussion guide to Locust in the Sandbox and says a sequel may be in the works.

August, Zilke Vegetable Farm of Milan hosts a weeks-long Sunflower Festival, celebrating the unmistakable bright yellow blooms that grow as large as a dinner plate as well as the harvest season and all things summer. This year’s festival is set for August 8-28, and Tom and Vicki Zilke, who own the farm as well as Zilke Farm Kitchen, are preparing for an influx of visitors who love the sunny flowers.

The Zilkes have been farming at the location for 12 years and this is the fourth year of the Sunflower Festival.

“The first year we started growing them we had a festival,” said Tom. “We sort of stuck our necks out. We researched how to grow them and then started out with about three and a half acres, and it’s grown since then.”

This year they will have approximately eight acres of sunflowers covering their landscape.

During the three-week festival visitors will have plenty of chances to enjoy both the flowers and other activities. “We put up a big tent and people come out and pay to have a meal amongst the sunflowers,” Tom said. “We have a plein air art class out there.

We’re going to have special events every Saturday. One Saturday we’ll have corn on the cob, another Saturday we’ll have watermelon, another we’ll have something to do with blueberries, whether it’s pancakes or whatever.”

Zilke Vegetable Farm will be open for visitors during the festival from 8 a.m. until sunset every day. Admission to the Sunflower Festival is $8 per person evenings after 5 p.m. and all day on Saturday and Sunday; $5

weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m.; children ages six to 12 will get in for a $4 fee; children five and under will be admitted free. The weekday entry fee for senior citizens is $4.

On Thursday, August 11 the farm will host a sit-down meal in the sunflower field, created by their own Zilke Farm Kitchen.

More information about the cost of the meal and what will be served will be posted on the website closer to the festival dates.

On three separate dates artist Kim Rhoney will lead plein air painting sessions on the farm. En plein air, or plein air painting, is the act of painting outdoors. Artists or aspiring artists may choose to attend on Monday, Aug. 8, Wednesday, Aug. 10, and Wednesday, Aug. 17. Sign-up for the painting sessions will be available on the Zilke Farm website closer to the start of the festival.

Why did the Zilkes decide to plant sunflowers in the first place, and then choose to host festivals devoted to the yellow flowers? “We both love sunflowers, and we were looking to add to our farm,” Tom said.

There’s something unique about Jerry’s Pub & Restaurant – a community staple, a go-to place nestled on the shore of Wamplers Lake. The family-owned pub offers dining and entertainment, drinks, and a hub where friendships thrive.

Its amiability is largely what put Jerry’s Pub on the map, earning it a good reputation and a slew of satisfied patrons over the years. Locals frequent the pub, as do people from farther away, all looking to have a good time and enjoy some delicious grub.

Perhaps more popular than the pub itself is its owner, Jerry Andonian, who is often found at the Keno machine behind the bar, mingling with customers, and entertaining diners with renditions of Frank Sinatra songs.

Jerry’s easygoing character and inclination for fun are evident upon entering Jerry’s Pub. Everything about the 44-year-old pub – the employees, music, atmosphere, scenic surroundings, and genuinely friendly vibes – beckons you to relax and leave your troubles at the door.

BJ Andonian, co-owner and youngest of Jerry’s four children, says the pub is a group effort. His sisters, Michelle, Sue, and Lisa are also instrumental in the business. Together, they make up the backbone of the restaurant. However, their dad’s vision made Jerry’s Pub what it is today.

At a ripe 17 years old, Jerry got his first, albeit short-lived, taste of business ownership when he purchased a pool hall in downtown Detroit complete with four tables and a Coca-Cola machine.

His business partner, Bob, and he each coughed up a whopping $300 to purchase the business. Soon, money was flying in the back room as men gathered for poker games. After the police discovered their shenanigans, Jerry sold his half of the business.

Taking a hiatus from pursuing business life, Jerry served in the Army as

a bomb disposal specialist for two years.

He also played on his post’s baseball team.

“I played baseball the first half of my life,” he said. “I was a pitcher-forhire.” Fresh out of the Army, Andonian played a stint with a semi-pro baseball team in Little Falls, Minnesota. Then, realizing the necessity of getting a “real job,” he headed back home to Detroit, where the A&P grocery store hired him.

Over the years, he owned a couple of grocery stores, a party store, and a “rough-n-tumble bar” called Tom & Jerry’s in the middle of Detroit. “Saturday nights in that bar were like going to war,” recalled BJ with a chuckle. His dad agreed.

“I have a lot of great memories from Detroit, but it was changing and getting rough. I thought, ‘I’d like to have a place outside of Detroit',” said Jerry. So, he sold the bar and the stores, trading in ownership for managing a high-end restaurant, The Excalibur, in Southfield.

“It was a celebrity hangout; there were a lot of big-time gangsters who frequented – Giacalone, Tocco,” he said.

BJ worked as a busboy and, in many ways, grew up in the restaurant in Southfield.“It was a good upbringing, just like this place [Jerry’s Pub],” BJ remembered. HE ALSO

RECALLED MEETING FRANK SINATRA, OF WHOM HIS DAD IS A LONGTIME FAN. Jerry said, “Whenever Frank was in town in the ‘70s, he’d order ribs and come in with his entourage. I got to meet him; BJ got to meet him. Meeting him in person was out of this world.”

JERRY ANDONIAN, 88, LOOKS BACK ON WHAT HAS MADE JERRY’S PUB ON WAMPLERS LAKE A DESTINATION ‘WORTH THE DRIVE’.

The Excalibur allowed Jerry to learn how to manage a successful restaurant and gain more industry experience. Valuable lessons were plentiful during his time working closely with his boss. “It was a great experience for me. I met a lot of people, a lot of moneyed people,” he said. “And I found out how to get along with people – that’s what you have to do in this business. You build your business by making friends. No enemies.”

Jerry’s vision of owning his own bar and restaurant in a country setting came to life in 1978. “I answered an ad in the Detroit News – it said, 'Bar for sale in the Irish Hills',” he said. Upon answering the ad, he discovered the then-owner sitting at one end of the bar of a dying business. “I saw that the place wasn’t doing so well.

It was just a farmhouse then, about a one-third of the size it is now,” said Jerry.

Any hesitation that he experienced evaporated when he laid eyes on the lake view and 300 feet of lake frontage. “I didn’t even need to see his [financial] books; I made him an offer right then and there,” he said. His vision quickly formed in his mind as he thought of the potential for the bar on the lake.

BJ was 12 years old, his sisters just teenagers, yet BJ recalls driving out to Wamplers Lake to see their dad’s newly-acquired business. Jerry went straight to work, implementing changes and ideas and adding space. “What you see now is a culmination of 40 years,” he said. From the beginning, whenever he was making a profit, Jerry invested more into his business.“Every summer – the only time you make any real money in the Irish Hills – I’d add on and add on and add on,” he said.

“The first thing I did is add food,” he said.

“The previous owner only served potato chips and peanuts; there was no kitchen.” So, he added a kitchen and created a mouth-watering menu.

“The second thing I did is sponsor softball teams that I coached,” said Jerry, adding that they won several trophies. “Thirdly, I became friends with all the neighbors. They really took onto me.”

Music played a significant role in boosting business. “We had live bands six nights a week; we booked excellent rock bands,” BJ said. Jerry agreed. “That’s how I really got this place going,” he said.

The revamped bar became a “nice, local place for all the south shore people and the Irish Hills.” But he still wanted to expand the dining area to accommodate more people. “I said to BJ, ‘We’re in the minor leagues now, and the bank will back us up for an addition. We can get up in the major leagues if we do that'.” So, the space was expanded to double its original size.

“We can seat around 80 people outside on the deck and close to 200 inside,” said Jerry. ”People drive for miles to come here, to this destination we’ve created.” The number of employees expanded as well. “Going into the summer, we will be up to 60 employees. In the winter, we have around 30.”

Jerry’s success in his personal life and business is seemingly the culmination of dedication to a vision, hard work, a positive attitude, and a friendly demeanor. BJ said, “The relationship that he built with the community early on has really carried us –

around, looking at his surroundings. This is his vision – ‘Look at this place,’ he always says.”

Jerry finally arrived at the exact place he envisioned all those years ago when he took a gamble on a dying business on Wamplers Lake. Taking in his surroundings at Jerry’s Pub, he said, “These are the thoughts I had in mind that first evening when I noticed the lakefront.”

“It’s a destination worth the drive,” said Jerry. Four generations of “regulars” attest to that statement. “We get customers who have been coming here since the ‘70s; now they come in with their grandkids and great-grandkids.”

The senior Andonian gleaned inspiration from the heroes of his early adulthood and stayed true to Sinatra’s famous song, “Each time I find myself layin’ flat on my face, I just pick myself up and get back in the race.” As a result, at 88 years old, he is truly living his dream.

“I went into this business to have fun and make a dollar or two. Jerry’s Pub is exactly the destination I envisioned,” he said. “Come to the lake; come to Jerry’s Pub.” n

Roberta “Bert” and Louie Lopez jumped at the chance to own Pinetree Antiques & More in Brooklyn in January 2021, but their foray into proprietorship wasn’t their first antique rodeo. They have been buying antiques for three decades.

“We’ve been married for 35 years and probably 30 of those years we’ve antiqued a lot of things for ourselves,” said Bert. They started selling their items in a booth in the store seven years ago, so they were familiar with the business. “When they were ready to sell it, we were ready to buy it,” she said.

The building has held an antique store for 29 years and they are the third owners. Pinetree Antiques & More houses up to 60 vendors with a wide variety of antiques and collectables, as well as décor and other items that range from shabby chic to man-cave-worthy collections.

“We have vintage jewelry, diamonds, and gold, as well as costume jewelry. We have furniture, a lot of glassware, quilts, oil lanterns, baseball cards, vintage tools, baskets, a lot of books, we even have records and movies,” said Bert.

“Almost anything that you would want, we have.”

She said she is learning quite a bit from running the store. Louie did most of the buying all those years they were collecting antiques, so now she is catching up on her knowledge of all things historic and collectible. “I learn a lot from the people who come in,” she said. “It’s pretty exciting when I can learn some stuff.”

Customers have shared what they know with her, such as how antique indoor gas lamps were once used. “I learn stuff all the time from it. Our little farm is adorned with flowers. Our Tecumseh homestead is old, built in 1832. Many times I have found perennials struggling in strange places – flowers gasping for breath behind the shadows of barns and from tangles of grasses and pastures, evidence

family to family there has been a fragrance of flowers left in the wake. There has been a passing on of beauty. This means something.

Our land is also full of flowers that grow roaring and wild, a tenacious beauty that insists on showing up. There are orange lilies in ditches and dandelions splashed like bright suns across the green lawn.

The purple chicory and Queen Anne’s lace turn wild fields into a living Monet painting. Tender flowers even push their way through cracks of hard, immovable concrete. This means something. I am certain of it.

We live in a world where the lilies of the field in all their splendor simply grow and adorn our lives without us asking.

There is something so profound in that.

There is such grace in that. We, despite ourselves, live among such exquisiteness.

Flowers surround us, their invisible

fragrances waft on the summer breezes.

Their beauty and abundance blossom within the fragility and fleeting nature of life and living. This means something.

Flowers are a gift that bless us without us even asking, so we, in turn, bless others.

We use flowers to comfort and to celebrate.

We use them to speak to joy and to speak to love. We use them to crack through the hard, immovable moments of loss and grief and regret. We use them to remind us of a tenacious beauty that exists despite the worst – a beauty that might, at times, gasp for breath, but in the end blossoms through the choking tangles and shadows of life.

Make no mistake, it means something that such beauty so tender and tenacious, so roaring and wild penetrates our lives no matter where we go. And make no mistake, it means something when we, in turn, leave a fragrance of tender and tenacious beauty in our wakes. n
