CHINAPLAS moves to Shenzhen for April 2021 debut Embrace new economic development, seize opportunities in Greater Bay Area

T

he 34th edition of CHINAPLAS has been rescheduled to April 13-16, 2021, at a new venue -- Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. This will be the first time for CHINAPLAS to be held in Shenzhen. The trade fair will alternate between Shenzhen (odd years) and Shanghai (even years) in the future, continuing to empower upstream and downstream plastics and rubber companies to uncover greater opportunities in the new phase of China’s economic development.

Adsale Exhibition Services Ltd., organizer of CHINAPLAS 2021, held a press conference, leveraging online video conferencing tools for the first time to virtually communicate and interact with more than 100 Chinese and international media. During the press conference, Mr. Stanley Chu, Chairman of Adsale, Ms. Ada Leung, General Manager of Adsale, and Ms. Norris Chu, Project Director of Adsale, announced the latest updates about the trade show, shared word of emerging developments from a new starting point, and discussed postpandemic opportunities in the plastics and rubber industries.

Unparalleled advantages of domestic market - Impacted by COVID-19 pandemic, the global economy is in a deep recession. Facing downward pressure from foreign trade, China’s State Council is redirecting the economic focus from export to a domestic-demand-driven model as the new normal. China’s 1.4-plusbillion population and 400-plus-million middle-income consumers represent the largest such grouping in the world, with consumption potential unmatched by any other economy.

The expansion of China’s middle class has created tremendous potential for consumption upgrading. In

The impact of COVID-19 is reshuffling the global economy and triggering major changes in manufacturing supply chains. innovation and smart manufacturing in the plastics and rubber industries. In addition, China is actively responding to plastics pollution, accelerating green and sustainable development, and creating market demand for much-needed recycling and green technologies.

Greater Bay Area, major upside for the industries - The Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area is the largest bay area in the world, accounting for 0.6% of China’s land area, 5% of its population, and 12% of the national Gross Domestic Product.

Its GDP is expected to reach 28.9 trillion RMB (about US$4.09 trillion) by 2030, ranking among the top 10 economies in the world. The “9+2” cities”1 are accelerating their coordinated development, building a vibrant world-class city cluster, and stimulating new economic momentum. The Greater Bay Area is not only an international center of scientific and technological innovation, but also the most concentrated region for plastics processing in China. Plastic products output within the nine cities reached 11.17 million metric tons in 2019, representing more than 13.6% of the national total (second only to Zhejiang Province) or 83.4% of Guangdong Province’s total output.

The region’s huge market, together with its abundant resources and strong innovation, will help to further advance the plastics and rubber industries.

Shenzhen at full throttle - Shenzhen was made a Pilot Demonstration Area in 2019, as well as being one of the core engines of the Greater Bay Area. In 2018, the total industrial added-value of the Greater Bay Area reached 2.82 trillion RMB (about US$399 billion), of

which Shenzhen accounted for the lion’s share of 32.3%. “Technology + Innovation” is Shenzhen’s business profile, with more than 3 million companies located there, including Huawei, ZTE, Tencent, DJI, BYD, TCL and other industrial leaders. In 2018, Guangdong Province invested 270.47 billion RMB (US$38.3 billion) into R&D funding - the highest in China - and Shenzhen was the leading city within Guangdong.

Embrace post-pandemic opportunities Over the years, China’s plastics and rubber industries have laid a solid foundation and built strong resilience and continuity into the economy.

Combined with continually emerging new trends and opportunities, all signs currently point to a positive outlook.

In the first quarter, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, business shutdowns, the Chinese New Year off-season and other factors, China’s plastic products output dropped 22.9% from the same year-ago period. Production resumed in April in an orderly way, and industries’ supply chains gradually returned to normal operations. In April, the year-on-year decline in the total output of plastic products narrowed, achieving a recovery of 8.6% from the previous month. In the battle against the pandemic, plastics played a key role in the production and supply of vital healthcare materials, personal protective equipment, medical supplies, and medical facility construction.

The pandemic also fueled the rapid growth in demand for takeaway service, fresh meal delivery, express delivery, convenience foods, household electronic product, medical supplies and fitness equipment. The post-pandemic era is seeing the acceleration of nextgeneration 5G wireless technology, artificial intelligence (AI), autonomous vehicles, high-end medical products, antibacterial and antimicrobial surfaces for use in everything from cars to appliances, and more. New project acquisition for AMUT Group recycling technology in the Far East

The Italian Group will contribute as a turn-key supplier to the most important project for sorting and recycling postconsumer PET & HDPE bottles, carried on in the last two years in South East Asia Region

A

MUT has been awarded a new tender project by a joint venture between two world leader groups, specializing in raw materials production and rigid packaging solutions, engaged in the circular economy, in the Far East and worldwide.

The Italian Group will contribute as a turn-key supplier to the most important project for sorting and recycling post-consumer PET & HDPE bottles, carried on in the last two years in South East Asia Region.

The lines, which will be processing light weight bottles with high percentages of PVC and non PVC shrinkable sleeves, will feature a double De-Labeller configuration.

In the first stage the AMUT patented De-Labeller performs a dry cleaning action able to detach most of the shrink sleeves labels while the second unit is a wet De-Labeller working as cold pre-washing, allowing to remove contaminants, without damaging the bottles and avoiding to lose the bottles necks during the process.

The washing process will include a plant for sorting and recycling postconsumer PET bottles, to make r-PET high purity flakes intended to be used, after being treated through extrusion and SSP (Solid State Polymerization), in the beverage industry to produce preforms containing r-PET, with a total capacity of 30,000 ton/year as net output. Another plant will be dedicated to sorting and recycling of post-consumer HDPE bottles for the production of r-HDPE flakes food grade and, after being treated through extrusion, destinated to the flexible and rigid packaging industry.

The plant will have a capacity of 15,000 ton/year of r-HDPE. AMUT washing technology is specifically studied to enhance the quality level and purity of flakes, suitable for the manufacture of new generated bottles.

The whole process is engineered to comply with the most demanding bottle-to-bottle applications while minimizing operational costs, fresh water usage, cleaning agents and energy consumption. Fresh water

usage is reduced to 1,1 litre for each kg of high purity flakes, thanks to AMUT patented Friction Washer unit.

The plant is scheduled to come online by the end of the next year.

This new order clinched testifies how AMUT’s technology and know-how, developed over the years in the recycling field, are recognized as the best available on the global market and to contribute to environmental preservation.

Tailor-made solutions featuring high-tech automation PRESMA is the only company to produce specific models for the moulding of resin corks for enological use

RESMA, a leading manufacturer of multistation injection moulding machines for thermoplastics, is the only company that produces specific models for the moulding of resin corks for enological use.

The specific range for this field can count on 4 models based on productivity and final application.

These machines are offered not only for the production of cylindrical wine corks, that can be personalized with raised logos on both sides, in two colours/materials, but also for “T” closures used for spirits and drip caps for oils.

For these last two models, considering the number of different versions with different dimensions and configurations, we designed tailor-made solutions equipped with high tech automation that guarantees constant production and quality of the product.

ROTO T1/24, the less productive model of the range, is offered as standard, XL and XXL that can be equipped with insert loaders, to allow the manufacturing of T Corks with heads up to 50mm diameter and 48 mm in height.

Its main feature is the vertical mould holding table. It

can be offered as a hybrid or fully electric machine (except model XXL) that can reach a production, when moulding small corks, from 1200 to 1500 pieces/hour. For the higher injected volumes with longer cooling times the output decreases to 700/800 pieces/hour.

ROTO T1/48 V EL stems from the need to produce “T” corks with the automatic loading of different size of plastic and wooden caps, without mould changing.

WORLD OF PLASTICS & RUBBER The machine, which is equipped with 48 moulds for injecting the leg only, uses the cap as a sort of cover; its positioning is made through a double pneumatic slide. A suction cap picks up the insert and drops it onto the upper side of the carousel.

During the injection process, a pneumatic cylinder mounted at the corresponding station, ensures the necessary contrast.

The hinged type horizontal plasticizing unit is equipped with a vertical nozzle head, injecting from the bottom.

This machine can also produce “T” corks, without caps, as well as wine corks; it is possible to set different parameters on a certain number of stations which allows it to run two different kinds of cork at the same time. These are divided after the ejection process. The output is 1,000/1,400 pcs/ hour.

ROTO T2/48 and Roto T4/48 are respectively the mid to high performance models. Both solutions can be built as the “XL” version giving a maximum cork size of 38 mm diameter and 46 mm height.

The quality of the moulded corks is guaranteed by the direct injection into single cavity tools. In the T2 model, the nozzles are aligned with the 48 single cavity mould holders on the carousel; the T4 machine is equipped with 4 nozzles positioned by 2 overlying carousels with a total of 192 moulds. During each injection process, Roto T2/48 produces 2 corks, Roto T4/48 exactly the double.

With these 2 models, it is possible to run different products such as wine corks and/or “T”-corks in 2 or 4 colours or 1 and 2 two colour corks using different materials. If we consider single component parts, for both machines the cycle time is between

1,9 and 2,1 seconds, obtaining an hourly output of around 2,500/3,500 (T2/48) and 5,000/7,000 (T4/48).

Two new models have recently been added to the range: the ROTO T2 / 45 which differentiates it from the tested ROTO T2 / 48 for the number of stations, the new actuation of the mould-holder table and the new mould opening / closing system, created to meet very specific needs in the production of particular caps T for spirits. As for the others, this model is also offered in the hybrid and electric version and can also be equipped for bimaterial / two-colour moulding and with insert”.

The ROTO T-8 is a small eight stations rotary machine designed for the production of samples ensuring the same moulding quality as the “older sisters”. Due to the few mouldholding stations with which the press

is equipped and the necessary cooling times, productivity is significantly lower. This version is reserved for those companies that need to do moulding tests, samples or even small productions and can therefore have a dedicated press without necessarily having to do it on production presses.

All the available models can be equipped with an insert loader for “T”-cork rigid caps and with pickand-place units to run doublecolour/double component corks in automatic (only by ROTO T/2 E T/4 models) mode by putting the part injected with the first component into the adjacent tool and moulding – on the second component/ colour. With this system, it is possible to produce corks for sparkling wine with different densities on either side and “T” corks with the “head” in a different colour In the “fully electric” version, the drives of the “transfer” injection unit are with electro-motor driven by frequency converter for the plasticizing unit and with brushless motor for the injection cylinder. The table rotation is electro-mechanic.

The reliable “Rotologic” software, entirely developed by Presma, guarantees an optimum management of the machine functions and of the personalization requested by every single end user.

Also, thanks to its set-up for modem and internet assisted remote service, it is possible to provide a just-in-time after sales service.

Thanks to the foresight of Ferruccio Giacobbe (Magic MP) who avoided the prestigious Italian brand ending up in foreign hands, here it is again, on the scene of the Extrusion Blow Moulding industry.

Automa by Magic has been established in October 2018, thanks to a concerted action by some

professionals of the sector and Magic MP itself. It continues to provide for and support Automa customers, and others, with spare parts, technical service, new PLC systems with its own software, UNIKOÂŽ, which vertically fits into any Extrusion Blow Moulding machine, both continuous and accumulation ones.

Not restricted to the above, Automa by Magic was also born to build new hydraulic machines, based on Automa and Magic projects, revisited in a modern way, with improved components and implemented solutions.

The equipment range includes the traditional shuttle machines, single and double station, and models with accumulator heads for the automotive and technical products industries.

For those customers who are strongly faithful to a technical tradition which makes them independent; for those destinations where the stability of the electricity line can be an enemy of all new full electric technologies; for these and other cases, the demand for hydraulic solutions is still active.

Automa by Magic, in its new building in Imola (Bologna, Italy), manufactures new EBM machines using a network of highly qualified and experienced suppliers. The machines are manufactured, tested and then sent to their destinations where skilled technicians carry out the commissionings.

Also existing machines complete overhaulings are carried out inhouse. Automa By Magic technical department intervenes to plan and develop all necessary conversions and updates agreed with endusers. Special attention is dedicated to all those technical improvements aimed to extend machines life and increase the active and passive safety, in case it is not sufficiently adequated or totally absent. This, besides the equipment modernization, increases machines efficiency, production and operators safety.

All the machines have been sold complete of moulds, fully tested in the Imola facility.

Next Fakuma in October 2021!

In cooperation with the exhibitor advisory board for Fakuma 2020, trade fair promoters P. E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG have decided to postpone the 27th Fakuma international trade fair for plastics processing to 2021.

The next industry highlight covering all aspects of plastics processing will take place from the 12th to the 16th of October, 2021

his year’s Fakuma will be postponed until next year. From the point of view of the trade fair organisers, the 27th Fakuma could have been held in Friedrichshafen from the 13th through the 17th of October, 2020. “Together with all involved parties, we struggled for a long time to amend the general conditions demanded by the corona pandemic in such a way that Fakuma 2020 could have been promoted successfully,” says Bettina Schall, managing director of P. E. Schall GmbH & Co. KG. A hygiene and security concept was developed for safe trade fair promotion to this end. “We fulfilled all of the prerequisites. However, in cooperation with the exhibitor advisory board we’ve now decided to postpone Fakuma 2020 to October, 2021.”

Rational Thinking, Care and a Sense of Responsibility Bettina Schall emphasises that this decision is based on rational thinking and a sense of responsibility: “As trade fair promoters, we see ourselves as service providers for our exhibitors and expert visitors. imic technology, renowned on the market for years for its ability to manage highly contaminated materials with filtrations normally suitable for injection moulding applications (because the market demand was for these applications up until a few years ago) has long realized the progressive shift towards the need to further refine plastics intended for recycling. The RAS selfcleaning filter, using the laser-drilled screen with filtration down to 80 microns, not only allows you to recycle highly contaminated materials independently and continuously without the constant need for operator, but also guarantees a material which is clean and retaining at the same time its mechanical resistance properties.

In fact, recycling companies who have chosen Fimic’s solutions for continuous filtration say that the obtained material is highly flexible and clean.

Reasons for choosing Fimic There are many reasons why this is a great choice; one of them being the wide filtration surface that the Fimic RAS melt filters are based on. Materials which can be recycled with Fimic Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to process and transform waste having different contamination levels, even unwashed, into high-quality pellets suitable for sensitive applications such as blown films. A typical case study is commercial films (a.k.a. supermarket films or packaging films): this material stream is slightly contaminated, typically below 5%. Being a very specific material stream, it is made of up to 99% LDPE and LLDPE, with very low traces of foreign plastics. By applying Fimic’s laser filtration the contamination, especially from paper labels and adhesive tapes, is efficiently and smoothly removed without decreasing both operational pressure and output performances. The scraper continuously collects inside it the contamination from the screen and automatically releases it after a pre-set adjustable time period. In this way, the contamination never resides in the filtration chamber for more than a few seconds. It is well known that paper labels include sub-contaminants such as moisture, inks and glues which, if residing too long at high temperatures create extra gas formations leading to swollen, low-quality pellets.

Fimic’s technology, combined with the use of Fimic’s laser screens (whether 80, 100, 120 or 150 micron), can efficiently handle the material and contaminations, guaranteeing an excellent pellet quality and at the same time, low melt losses, proportional to the contamination degree. The melt losses are, in fact, adjusted by the automated valve discharge mechanism, as this solution is not forced to discharge continuously, only when needed, thus avoiding unnecessary melt losses. Furthermore, as the discharge duration is only a few seconds long, the pellets shape undergoes no alteration whatsoever.

fter the suspension of all non-essential activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic, o r g a n i z a t i o n commences for PLAST 2021-international exhibition for the plastics and rubber industries, taking place in Milan from the 4th to the 7th of May of next year.

Roughly 450 direct exhibitors (excluding the represented companies) have already confirmed their participation in the fair, reserving an area of 35,000 m². One fifth of subscribers are foreigners, in addition to Italian branches of foreign machinery manufacturers.

The effects of the epidemic greatly conditioned worldwide fairs, causing the cancellation of all events in spring-summer 2020 and moving the ones planned for this autumn to 2021.

This was the case for various international plastics and rubber industry fairs and also for important events regarding the packaging and converting sector, such as Interpack and Drupa, originally planned for May and June 2020 but postponed to the period between early March and late April 2021.

Such changes led to the decision to confirm the next edition of PLAST to 4-7 May 2021 and to reschedule the other four fairs of The Innovation Alliance (IPACKIMA, MEAT-TECH, PRINT4ALL, and INTRALOGISTICA ITALIA), also due to the congestion at the Rho-Pero exhibition district.

This decision originates in the extraordinary situation of recent months with the objective of preventing overlaps, which would have caused difficulty for both companies and operators.

The Innovation Alliance project, favouring synergies among complementary sectors, is still a definite go. Although the five exhibitions are scheduled for different times, the organizers have already begun to plan unifying initiatives to assist operators in the planning phase.

The PLAST Office is again fully operational and, to facilitate potential exhibitors in the decision process (taking into consideration the obligatory shutdown in March and April), has extended the deadline to 31 July 2020 for benefiting from a 10% discount on the participation fee and priority stand assignments, which will be made starting in September.

Organizers are thus confident that they will see reservation numbers similar to the 2018 edition.

In comparison with other packaging materials, such as glass or aluminum, PET has a good environmental profile, mainly thanks to its lightness that translates into less material to produce, less material to dispose of, less energy used to

The case of Eaux de Volvic When we talk about water purity, it is inevitable to think of the accurate work carried out by the Societé des Eaux de Volvic, company part of the Danone Group that has continuously invested in new solutions for preserving the quality.

To achieve these goals, the company decided to invest in high tech machines and installed a SMI’s ECOBLOC® ERGON HC integrated system for stretch-blow moulding, filling and capping 8 L containers, with a square bottom, in 100% recycled plastics (rPET).

Designed to ensure respect for the environment, the new eco-friendly bottle is the result of joint work between the specialists at Danone and at SMI, which has allowed to develop a preform able to guarantee the constant resistance of the container during the stretchblow moulding process.

By using recycled PET in beverage bottles, every company can contribute to respecting the environmental and in developing an eco-friendly bottle suitable for the circular economy.

The complete Volvic production process was designed so that every step of the bottling is kept under constant control, because it is here that the water, coming from the deep underground, comes into contact with the external environment and

is at a greater risk of contamination which would compromise the sensory, chemical, physical and microbiological properties.

The Société des Eaux de Volvic SA, also, pays particular attention to everything that concerns sustainable development, environmental respect, product quality and purity, for this reason the whole bottling, packaging and distribution process was designed around these values and the machine supplied by SMI was integrated with sophisticate inspection systems, which, starting with the preforms, carry out a long series of checks to maintain the quality and purity of the spring water.

Smart and green technologies Main advantages of the integrated system of ECOBLOC® series: • compact, flexible solution for stretch-blowing, filling and capping bottles in PET, with the advantage, in terms of reducing production costs, as the system does not need a rinser, nor conveyors between the blower and the filler or accumulation • isolating system between the “dry” area of the blower and the “wet” one of the fillers, through a jet of high pressured, sterile air in excess of 5Pa, which guarantees a clean, hygienic filling system. The air flow, through 4 units of Galvani filters (HEPA filters) situated on the top part of the filler area, spreads around all the interested area to avoid contamination, acting as a “clean room”. In addition, the filling valve is controlled by an electronic flowmeter.

lasticsEurope, the Pan-European trade association representing plastics manufacturers, today announced the appointment of Dr Markus Steilemann, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Covestro, as its President, effective immediately. He succeeds Javier Constante who recently became President of Dow Latin America. In this new role Dr Steilemann will drive forwards the association and its memberships’ shared vision for greater circularity and sustainability, across the industry.

units used in the plastics processing, - servo-hydraulic injection moulding machine BOLE C460, 140 tons clamping force (sold during the PLASTPOL fair). This is the first Chinese construction of this machine with which linear bearings are used, which significantly reduce the resistance to movement of the mould and contribute to its better protection, - Cartesian robot, the smallest robot from TMA Automation. The robot uses micropalletisation technology, i.e. the robot picks up a detail and puts it back in a programmed manner. The robot on show offers up to 3 kg load capacity. The PLASTPOL expo was used by the company as the showcase for programming three-axis movements concept in such a way that the robot would be able to repeat certain sequences, - Japanese SCHIMADZU strength testing machine - Autograph AGX-V. The device is primarily used for

strength tests of various materials tensile, compression and basic tests according to European, American and global standards. The machine offers a modern design.

These are only some of the innovations the visitors could see at the recent edition of PLASTPOL. The plastics festival at Targi Kielce is a must-see for many companies whose business profile is associated with the plastics industry. “We have been a part of Plastpol for 7 years. This is the main trade show we join. We offer our ultrasonic welding devices. This year we have come with our latest development, i.e. two lines for the surgical and protective masks production. I hope that we will be able to attract new customers this year, even though we are in such a difficult situation now “, claims Marcin Kiełbasiński Łukasiewicz Research Institute, Tele and Radio Research Institute.

the 24th International Fair of Plastics and Rubber Processing PLASTPOL which featured biodegradable, compostable and bio-based products. The expo stand zone attracted the participants’ attention because of its wide range of products complemented with consulting, research and certification services. Raw materials, components, additives for bioplastics processing, machines and devices dedicated to the bioplastics sector, media, associations, and industry organisations also marked their presence in this zone.

The knowledge-packed meetings were a strong accent of the PLASTPOL; the Polish Union of Plastics Converters together with PlasticsEurope Polska organised producers, processors and recyclers meeting in online version.

Conscious resource management through the appropriate materials, technologies selection and process optimisation, is one of the highlights of the seminar.

One hundred forty-seven companies from 12 countries (Austria, Czech Republic, Denmark, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Germany, Poland, Serbia, Slovenia, Switzerland, Ukraine, and Italy) participated in this year edition of PLASTPOL. The 25th PLASTPOL is to be held from 25 to 28 May, 2021.

It will reflect the agenda in terms of content and the knowledge transfer that drupa stands for. On fixed days and times interested parties can take part in the web sessions free of charge and chat with the speakers. Afterwards the videos will be available on demand. The “Exhibition Space” brings together what visitors can expect to normally see in the exhibition areas – exciting products, innovative companies and expert input. This means visits to the live event can already be planned at this early stage.

In addition, even meetings can already be set up: at the “Networking Plaza”. The networking options allow companies and interested parties to establish live online contact in advance and intensify this contact at the event in April 2021. Interview with the President of Equiplast, the International Plastics and Rubber Event Bernd Roegele: “Equiplast will highlight the importance of a sector that the pandemic has revealed to be vital”

he situation caused by COVID-19 has resulted in Fira de Barcelona deciding to postpone holding Equiplast, the International Plastics and Rubber Event, initially scheduled for June and later for December this year until September 2021. In this interview, the President of Equiplast, Bernd Roegele, explains the latest organisational developments regarding the event, which will take place from 14th to 18th September 2021 at Fira de Barcelona’s Gran Via venue, together with Expoquimia and Eurosurfas.

Question: The first, and unavoidable question. Why is Equiplast moving to September 2021?

Answer: The outbreak of coronavirus and COVID-19 have made an impact across the globe in a way that has never been seen before.

And in our case, in addition to the restrictions imposed by the authorities, the health of workers, exhibitors, visitors and suppliers have prevailed in making the decision to move the fair to the end of the year.

This decision was made with the majority support of the main sectoral agents as was the case when we decided to organise it in June and then postpone it until December.

However, circumstances have forced us to make a new change to the dates as well as a new model.

In this regard, how is the Equiplast, the International Plastics and Rubber Event being planned?

Every three years, the organisers of the three events take on the challenge of designing and organising a trade fair event that will surprise everyone, as well as being a great business opportunity for all the professionals in the sector.

In this regard, and given the current situation, this challenge has multiplied and that’s why we are working on a hybrid design, in which 80% of the fair’s offers are at the physical event and 20% are online,

with the aim of offering events that will be attractive and useful for all the professionals in the sectors represented.

In addition, and in line with this, at Fira de Barcelona, we are working to increase the level of safety at our exhibition venues to be able to carry out our trade fairs with the maximum guarantees in place through the implementation of a strict protocol which, in collaboration with the risk management consultant specialist, Aon, and epidemiological advice from the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona, we establish a series of measures to prevent contagion.

Will Equiplast 2021 be very different from the 2017 event?

Since the 1960s, the three fairs have been shaping the largest applied chemistry trade fair in our country and the second largest in the European Union. In this regard, we wanted to continue working shoulder to shoulder with the three sectors to be able to organise events which, despite everything that’s going on, can respond to their concerns and needs.

At Equiplast, we will highlight the importance of a sector that has been vilified and one the pandemic has revealed as vital to our health and well-being. In this regard, the fair will include a recycling plant in operation to demonstrate the sector’s commitment to the environment.

Similarly, we have announced the first edition of the Equiplast - Shaping the Future Awards, which will reward projects or products made from recycled plastic or other sustainable materials. And finally, the fair will present a unique exhibition of products made from 100% recycled plastic from renewable and biodegradable sources.

How have you let exhibitors and visitors know about the new Equiplast event?

The most recent action which has helped us to check the interest which can be stirred up by the online contents has been the first session of the Unprecedented Industrial Dialogues, a series of webinars which we organised during the first week of June, the dates on which we should have been holding the three fairs.

We have been very satisfied with the response we have received to a programme which has dealt with issues such as digitalisation, the circular economy and technology transfer, the core themes which the theoretical contents of the three fairs

will be based on. The Unprecedented Industrial Dialogues will continue until the events are held with the aim of continuing to generate theoreticalscientific debate.

Finally, in the international arena, we have designed an International VIP Buyers Programme, focusing on the most accessible foreign markets such as North Africa and Latin America, which has allowed us to secure the presence of various reverse trade missions.

And now, we are obliged to continue working to make all the sectoral agents aware of the new date change.

Finally, as President of Equiplast, what type of fair would you say we can expect next year?

I’d like to call on everyone to see the fair as a window of opportunity and as a driving force for the economic revival of the sector which it represents in an event which will have all the safety measures in place. I’m convinced that we will meet the needs of an industry that is fundamental to our economy once again.

In March, Messe München decided to move the exhibition date from June to December in agreement with the VDMA Robotics + Automation Association. Messe München had done everything it could to ensure a safe in-person exhibition by postponing the event to the latest possible date of the year and drawing up a comprehensive protection and hygiene protocol. However, current developments make it absolutely necessary to rethink these plans.

Due to the increasing number of infections, travel restrictions have been imposed for an increasing number of European countries and regions in recent weeks. Similarly, the travel situation outside Europe has barely improved. In addition, many German and international

he automatica exhibition scheduled for December 8–11, 2020 will not take place due to the current travel restrictions in Europe in connection with the coronavirus pandemic, which are becoming more stringent. This decision has been taken by Messe München in agreement and close coordination with the conceptual sponsor VDMA Robotics + Automation and the automatica Advisory Board.

In coordination with the industry, Messe München is now developing a compact new in-person event for mid-2021, which will be adapted to the specific circumstances in times of the coronavirus. In addition, automatica is further expanding its digital offering.

However, too many of our exhibitors and visitors could not have come to Munich due to travel restrictions. That is why we ultimately had to cancel automatica 2020. New exhibition format for summer 2021 under development The industry’s need for personal contact, exchange and presentation opportunities is stronger than ever. This is why Messe München is now working with exhibitors to develop a new inperson event with digital elements, adapted to the circumstances in times of the coronavirus. The new event has been conceived as a compact ‘exhibition before the exhibition’ for early summer 2021 and is to become an add-on to automatica. Detailed information on this will follow shortly.

Nestlé joins U.S. Plastics Pact, committing to meet ambitious circular economy goals by 2025 Led by The Recycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund in partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the U.S. Plastics Pact will unify approaches to rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastics

estlé has joined the U.S. Plastics Pact, a collaborative, solutionsdriven initiative bringing together industry and social organizations to drive significant systemic change by unifying diverse cross-sector approaches, setting a national strategy, and creating scalable solutions to create a path forward toward a circular economy for plastics in the United States by 2025. The first North American Pact of its kind, the U.S. Pact is a collaboration led by The Recycling Partnership, World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

As part of the U.S. Pact, activators like Nestlé recognize that significant, system wide change is imperative to realize a circular economy for plastics. As such, the U.S. Pact will convene more than 60 brands, retailers, NGOs, and government agencies across the plastics value chain to bring one voice to U.S. packaging through coordinated initiatives and innovative solutions for rethinking products, packaging, and business models.

Led by The Recycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund in partnership with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the U.S. Plastics Pact will unify approaches to rethink the way we design, use, and reuse plastics

“Our vision at Nestlé is that none of our packaging, including plastics, ends up in a landfill or as litter,” said Nicole Collier, Director of Government Affairs at Nestlé and recently appointed member of The Recycling Partnership’s Board of Directors. “The U.S. Plastics Pact’s ambitious goals align with that vision, and the coordinated approach complements our ongoing efforts to pioneer alternative packaging materials, support increased investments in recycling infrastructure, and drive recycling behavior in pursuit of a circular economy.”

As a founding activator of the U.S. Plastics Pact, Nestlé has agreed to collectively make efforts towards these four ambitious goals: 1. Define a list of packaging to be designated as problematic or unnecessary by 2021 and take measures to eliminate them by 2025.

2. By 2025, all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

3. By 2025, undertake ambitious actions to effectively recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging.

4. By 2025, the average recycled content or responsibly sourced biobased content in plastic packaging will be 30%.

While the U.S. Pact follows the ambitious precedents set by the existing global network of Plastic Pacts, it will be tailored to meet the unique needs and challenges of the U.S. market. The Pact will reflect national priorities and realities, while still propelling the nation closer to other developed nations in its management of plastic waste.

“Together through the U.S. Plastics Pact, we will ignite system change to accelerate progress toward a circular economy,” says Sarah Dearman, Vice President of Circular Ventures for The Recycling Partnership. “The U.S. Pact will accelerate system wide change by inspiring and supporting upstream innovation through a coordinated national strategy, creating a unified framework and enabling members to accelerate

Achieving this vision will require new levels of accountability from all facets of the plastics supply chain. The U.S. Pact emphasizes measurable change and as such, Nestlé is committed to transparent, annual reporting, guided by WWF’s ReSource: Plastic Footprint Tracker, which will be used to document annual progress against our four goals. The first task of the founding members of the U.S. Plastics Pact will be to establish a “roadmap” in Q1 2021 to identify key milestones and national solutions to achieving the U.S. targets and realize a circular economy in which plastic never becomes waste.

Since early 2018 when Nestlé announced its ambition to make 100% of its packaging reusable or recyclable by 2025, the company has accelerated work to eliminate hardto-recycle materials in accordance with its Rules of Sustainable Packaging. The company also seeks to reduce its use of virgin plastic by one third by 2025. In January 2020, Nestlé announced an investment of up to CHF 2 billion to lead the shift from virgin plastics to food-grade recycled plastics and to accelerate the development of innovative sustainable packaging solutions.

With this investment, Nestlé is working to create a market for food-grade recycled plastics, which does not

currently exist on an industrial level for plastics other than PET. Nestlé’s ability to achieve 100% reusable or recyclable packaging partially relies on helping upgrade underfunded and often outdated recycling infrastructure in the U.S. Efforts already underway in this pursuit include the company’s investment in the Materials Recovery for the Future Collaborative which demonstrated the successful collection, separation and preparation for recycling of flexible plastic packaging in a curbside recycling program pilot.

Nestlé continues to work on scaling up solutions for recycling flexible plastic by participating in The Recycling Partnership’s Film and Flexibles Task Force. Additionally, in 2017 Nestlé Waters North America began a multi-year $6 million investment in the Closed Loop Infrastructure Fund to support projects that help increase recycling capabilities throughout the country. Nestlé has added the How2Recycle® label to the majority of its U.S. packaging portfolio, providing clear and concise information to make accurate recycling easier.
