Hands-off: Do Not Tag

There is this idiotic play no one would surely want to join but now looming over the country where journalists are labelled communists. As a campus publication, we condemn red-tagging of student and professional journalists, media organizations, church people, and any individual as the vicious move poses risky repercussions to victims with death being the worst. Recall that on November news we were greeted by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Department of National Defense accusing Gabriella, Oxfam sa Pilipinas, and National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) as communist fronts. The women’s party and non-government organizations (NGOs) later slammed the military for their “malicious, careless” attack. Further back in August, university students like of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) flocked in simultaneous protests in decry of red-tagging, campus militarization, and mandatory random drug testing among raised issues. One may ask on what grounds do they have to worry about, and here is what is chilling in this no laughable game: the suspected vigilante can be claimed to have a million bounty on their head and, as having links to communist rebels, is more likely to be executed. “If education is truly given a good and true priority, it would be a good head start to raise the bar of Philippine educational system.” Late November this year, the Philippines was set in astonishment as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) released results wherein our country landed 79th in Reading, 78th in Science and Math (out of 79) countries that participated in the said test.

While others were in absolute shock, some were not surprised with the results at all – however one thing is certain and that is there is a looming problem with and in the educational system of the Philippines. With the bigger picture in frame, it is hard to detect which factor causes which results but on

Experts were sure to give their views and perspectives on the issue at hand. – some blamed it on the current curriculum that we have, the lack of instructional materials, lack of teacher and student support and some even extending to the teacher’s approach and teaching methods. Scrutinizing over these possible factors, Dr. Andreas Schleicher, head of PISA, once reminded that: “PISA result was not about how much a country is spending on education, but where it is spent. The top-ranking countries do not spend the most for education, but they spend

a good portion on recruiting and sustaining the best teachers.” Reflecting upon it, we sure do have a good budget (not the best but good to have some) for education but to as how it is spent seems to be the possible problem. While we are continuously assured that education has the highest portion of the national budget, it does not reflect the current condition of our educational system. For instance, the classic problem on lack of classroom and textbooks never goes out of style to unjustifiable teacher-student ratio and even incompetent teachers! If education is truly given a good

This is what we only shout out for: Correct red-tagging. It is just sorely disappointing that our very own military force were not prudent enough in verifying

HIS-STORY 65 SULTAN Andrea Nicole Aspa

Chief Artist andreanicolleaspa@gmail.com

Upon releasing the movie poster, trailer, and promotions of the Spanish-produced animated movie “Elcano and Magellan”, the Filipino netizens especially the young social media users are punching it with tones of criticism and judgment in various social media platform. The term “glorifying colonialism” and portraying Lapu-Lapu as the main antagonists in the film ignites the anger of most of them, to the point that the Philippine distributor and the producer of the said movie needs to “re-evaluate” it after receiving backlash. But does it really make sense? Showing disapproval and ranting in a movie that tackles their own history (this movie is not about the Philippines after all)

while on the contrary, staying quiet and blinded on our own nation’s problem or let me say our OWN historical background? The problem with us

Vacant? Every time I hear that word when we’re talking with our teachers, my classmates and I would feel happy because it means we can take a break from a certain subject and do a lot of things such as roam around the campus, eat in the university canteen, finish our written works or review for upcoming exams in other subjects. “Having free time to do other things is good and all but I think that we will only suffer more.”

Filipinos is that we are so immersed on the idea of patriotism and nationalism but lack historical knowledge which leads to inappropriate judgments. First and foremost,

the expedition of Ferdinand Magellan is not about conquering and colonizing islands, what they wanted is to trade spices and it just happened that they found the island which is known today as our country-Philippines. Second, Lapu-Lapu was not fighting for the Philippines (considering that the term ‘Philippines’ and ‘Filipinos’ are not established in the pre-Hispanic period). What Lapu-Lapu did is to protect the people of his island and fight a foreign intruder which is natural. Therefore, considering Lapu-Lapu as a national hero is kind of senseless. Lastly, the movie itself is their own depiction of history, needless to say we cannot just tell the

Spanish “Hey! This movie sucks, pull it out.” After all, there are two sides of the story we need to consider. Now, this is my point: maybe because of the flowery and false patriotism fed by our school textbooks and history archives, many of us are still unequipped with right knowledge and just relying on what we see and what we’ve read – that we become foreign on our own land and history. We should not rely on what our eyes read or our ears hear, never ever let his-story based on textbooks fill us. If only the young minds of Filipino were able to acquire the proper learning of our own nation, I think this will never be an issue. ***

more negative consequences such as cramming lessons before the examination date hence, the real purpose of learning becomes defeated. Is it just to finish to all the prescribed lessons for the semester? Looking at it closely, this delays the learning which may lead to unaccomplished target goals and objectives for the semester. Having free time to do other things is good and all but I think that we will only suffer more. Not all student can balance their studies. Some might be actually struggling and having a hard time understanding the lectures due to lack of meetings with their subject teachers while some cannot ‘really’ learn due to unpleasant learning environment. One idea that I might suggest on this predicament is the construction of SHS Department’s own building. While

it is true that learning is not confined by the four walls of the classroom, I still quite believe that it begins there.

from page 5 and true priority, it would be a good head start to raise the bar of Philippine educational system. With the current problems on hand, there must be a transparency as to how the educational budget is spent. More than the students and the teachers, the people needs to know how we can all strive to have sustainable education – one that even goes beyond PISA results. One that can truly contribute to the country’s future of effective and efficient nation-building.

Dear Editor,

Dear Writer,

I wish to enlighten some of my baffling thoughts from the College of Teacher Education (CTE) with regard to the recent collection of 650 pesos per student that is said to be college fee. As one of the students who are required to pay, I got surprised because our state university belongs to the list of free tuition and yet our department is asking for the said amount.

While it is true that State Universities and Colleges such as LSPU enjoys free tuition, it is the college, in this case, CTE’s discernment to collect an amound of Php 650.00. The fee solicited by the college is not covered by the free tuition law since it is for the college or department use. The said fee will be used for different activities which will be conducted by your college.

According to the Student Council, the money is to be spent for the activities of the college. For the just concluded semester, it was the Intramurals and Foundation Week. For this coming second semester, the remaining fund will be allocated for the CTE Week.

Further, each college is autonomous in nature wherein they are allowed to implement their rules and regulations as guided by the University policies. In this case, CTE then implemented a policy to collect a certain amount of fee which will enable the college to hold activities for the benefit of the students under the said college.

While the council has sound reasons to open such collection, I think it unfair because other colleges like the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) also has collected fee but it was only 150 pesos for their registration—just compare it to the unconscionable 650. What is more, students of the College of Business Management and Accountancy (CBMA) and the College of Engineering (COE) remember paying not even a centavo. We chose this school because we expect we are free to pick penny out of our pockets. I hope you can shed some light on this issue. -Writer

The said fee will cover all the expenses for the different activities of CTE, which means that it will be used throughout this academic year. You can expect that they will no longer ask for more contributions for upcoming activities. The council of CTE also advised that they will be releasing a financial statement which will include the breakdown of the said fee. -Editor

Stories of folklore and myths are familiar tell-tale stories in the barrios and small towns, much more one that includes “creatures of the night”. Each place has its own rendition to explain the different paranormal activities happening under their noses. However, in a city that almost never sleeps, which seems to have no place for unexplainable phenomenon, these stories are unheard of or if not, met with a raised and questioning brow. Multo sa Manila? No way. This is what exactly the graphic novel ‘Trese’ challenged. Presenting the supernatural beings of Philippine mythology and folklore back dropped against the unresting and modern streets of Manila. Writer – artist Budgette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo brought to life mythical creatures in today’s setting – Stranger Things style. Trese’s fresh themes were a breakthrough in the presentation of both Philippine culture and literature. In fact, it is created smartly that Netflix already announced that it will be adapted into series. The story unfolds with Alexandra Trese, daughter of Anton Trese, who inherited her father’s role as the protector of Manila from the creatures of the supernatural. Series of horrors brought by spirits and creatures of the dark in different parts of Metro Manila and merging themselves in the modern world; acting as the resistance, Trese’s aim is to investigate and solve each crime. Each book features different cases where Alexandra Trese and her crew solves mysteries which include but are not limited to White Lady at the Balete Drive, kidnapping of a tikbalang, zombie attacks in Manila North Cemetery, murders involving tiyanaks – name it, Tan and Baldisimo have probably included it.

Be vigilant! Secure yourself on the well-lit side of the road unless an Alexandra Trese will come and save the night.

BRIGHTER THAN THE SUN: JASIF’s bright future for innovative Filipino farming by: Maria Cecilia Jhadziah Diva

In the midst of the hustle and bustle of San Pablo City lies a quaint and green area along Brgy. San Ignacio which prides itself with innovative farming strategies and agricultural practices. Joni and Susan Agroshop and Integrated Farms (JASIF) started in August 2018 with two hectares of land. JASIF’s goal is to build 100 mushroom houses gradually in San Pablo City and other areas in the Philippines. The major objectives of the program is to create a profitable investment opportunity other than the Corn Plantation Partnership Program and to produce a huge volume of quality mushrooms worthy to be supplied locally and to be exported to other countries. A highlight of JASIF is its Land Conversion (Organic Mini-Farm and Greenhouse Set-Up) which envisions converting every vacant land into a farm and every Filipino to be a farmer. The program mainly focuses on small-scale lands ranging from 100 sqm to 1000 sqm. This program is beneficial in increasing awareness about the need for improving our environment, Photo courtesy of Joni and Susan Agroshop and Integrated Farms reduce the risk of chemical ingestion Facebook page

The development of the farm was a causebased start by Joni Sanchez together with his family to create a tourist attraction focused on farming and to showcase San Pablo’s own local products. The company has been planting corn as its main crop but it also offers partnerships to help others generate income through corn plantation, urban and container gardening, land conversion and mushroom plantation. As the company keeps on expanding, more products and crops are opened to the farm. The farm

provides several seminar-workshops and partnership programs which aim to provide livelihood to the community. For example, the corn plantation partnership program aims to supply the huge demand of corn in the local market, provide livelihood to local farmers, benefit from economic potential of idle lands and provide partnership opportunity to partners and investigators. Another program spearheaded by the company is the Mushroom Plantation Partner ship Program.

Farms takes pride in its sunflower and ornamental plantation which certainly adds appeal to the public. In fact, JASIF is already a Department of Tourism accredited site in San Pablo City. ***

Jumping high with his goals, twisting together with his dreams, and landing his feet on the mat carrying his country’s name, a young man from Pasay City, Carlos Edriene ‘Caloy’Yulo introduced gymnastics to his fellow countrymen who’s a big fan of ball games and combative sports after he bagged the gold medal for Artistic Gymnastics, Stuttgart, Germany, Oct. 12.
