D-Day?

In celebration of the Culture and Arts Festival (CAF), the Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State Universities and Colleges (STRASUC) began its 6th CAF on Day 0 with a Solidarity Meeting. With the event starting in such a way, a question is raised: is the STRASUC prepared, or is it still in preparation?

Looking back at the Laguna State Polytechnic University (LSPU) University -wide CAF, competitions started immediately after the opening program, which kept the adrenaline and excitement pumping throughout the said event. But the downside of this is that delegates from different campuses could not settle in properly after arriving at the venue and needed clarification with their respective events. This created a lot of fuss in the LSPU-CAF. On the other hand, STRASUC’s Day 0 served as a grace period for delegates who traveled across the re-

gion reach the venue; Batangas State University— Pablo Borbon Campus (BSU -PBC).

Additionally, solidarity meetings are not just preparation periods but also a time to express camaraderie and sportsmanship among athletes coming from the whole Southern Tagalog Region, which sums up this year’s theme: “Advancing Culture and the Arts as Strategic Resource for National Development.”

Program schedules were sent out days before Day 0 with specified time frames for each event, making a statement regarding the preparedness of STRASUC. Kudos belongs to the organization that pushed through the event despite the limitations and boundaries set during the pandemic. D-Day is, in fact, not for the delegates’ competitions but for the implementation of a large-scale event during difficult times.***

Public toilets and shower rooms are placed in numerous and massive places or establishments as they act as sanitary spaces for people to practice hygiene. Situated in Batangas State University— Pablo Borbon Campus, where the 6th STRASUC Culture and Arts Festival is happening, complaints about the existing shower room for use arise.

Cultural and art delegates, advisers, coaches, and many others from 12 participating universities in Southern Tagalog gathered together to compete and celebrate.

Yet, the provided shower rooms to use might hinder people's ability to focus, enjoy, and simply function during the entire festival.

The said bathroom which can be used is only two: one is made out of steel for roofs, and another one has only tarapal as cover. I must say that describing it can

make me feel uneasy due to the use of low-quality materials and the absence of a shower area, given that it is a big event and many attendees come from various locations.

A lack of access to proper sanitation facilities significantly hinders the celebration as participants or guests may feel uncomfortable and tired while waiting to use the shower room. Hosting festivals requires the preparedness of the host and the provision of enough accommodation, sanitation, and maintenance of facilities.

As a means of promoting health, is it not essential for an institution to offer adequate sanitary facilities? I believe it is crucial and one of the common concerns of the general public. Public and private institutions must allot funds related to people's health, such as improvements and sanitation of comfort rooms, as it will allow people to dispose of their waste appropriately, minimizing pollution of the environment and lowering the risk to themselves and others.***

Culture should be preserved; it is not something to trample on. The true essence of cultural events is gradually disappearing due to innovation and the people behind it. And it led me to the question, who is being highlighted when conducting cultural events or performances? The culture or the people in front of it?

As technology fostered, it accompanied new materials

that made the performance more beautiful, but it somehow disregarded our culture and tradition. Technology becomes a repository of processes and, thus, a resource. It’s heartbreaking how things in the past are being neglected, and now they’re just casually using the word “culture” for clout.

We can’t deny that people are indolent when facing the screen of their gadgets.

Delegates of the 6th STRASUC-CAF arrive at BSU-PBC

April Lara Jane Velasco, a contemporary dancer from Western Philippines University (WPU), took a flight from Palawan to NAIA in Manila and rode a bus to BSU-PBC. “It [took] like 4 to 5 [hours] bago po [kami nakarating],” she estimated considering their bus travel time.

Meanwhile, participant for the photography competition from the University of Ri-

zal System, Mel Carlo B. Tan, said that they, too, took a 5 to 6-hour bus trip. When asked how their transport was, he replied, “Hindi siya nakakapagod kasi nakaupo.”

All of the delegates from participating SUCs arrived safe, healthy, and ready to bring home the bacon.

The official opening of the STRASUC – CAF 2022 was set on Nov. 15.***

Governor Mandanas welcomed and acknowledged the 12 festival king and 11 festival queen candidates as the organizers of the STRASUC - CAF officially endorsed them as this year’s candidates for the said competition.

Governor Mandanas reminded the candidates of the importance of joining such event as a way of preserving culture.

Mayor Dimacuha, on the other hand, pointed out that the candidates shall take the

search for Festival King and Queen not as a competition and enjoy it rather than feel the heat of the competition.

She also said that the candidates now have a lifetime friend through each other and that they shall treasure it.

The coronation night of the festival king and queen will be held on November 17 at the Multi-Purpose Gymnasium of the Batangas State University - Pablo Borbon Campus.***

...technology can easily capture amazing things with just the tip of their hand. The satisfaction that those things can produce is a distraction to the culture that we once protect.

Posing for the camera has become the goal, and not really to let the act live. Joining competitions and events without knowing the essence leaves us like an empty shell.

The authentic colors of annual cultural events fade as time goes by. And people per-

form because they have to, not because they want to. We should value and reflect more on our culture because culture should always be in the spotlight at the end of every performance and event.

A lot of innovation has occurred, but we shouldn’t forget the usual or the point of everything we do. I believe that the crown should always be placed on the head of the culture, not on the people acting to be part of it.***

All About All-Out Support Screen (CAF)

Schools play a significant part in social activities—however, the COVID-19 pandemic halted many significant school events and conferences. One of the most evident tools we use to exchange information during these times are modern technologies and social media platforms. Now that everything is slowly going back to normal, school events have resumed.

STRASUC commenced its 6th Culture and the Arts Festival (CAF) with 12 participating campuses, calling for a need to disseminate updates inside and outside the venue. Social Media power helps to engage viewers at a distance and promote the said event through posting, sharing, and commenting.

The viewers contributed to and engaged with the public posts by tagging their online friends, using hashtags to promote their campuses, and even providing opinions or asking questions in the comment sections when reliable sources posted information on the festival.

As the information is disseminated in an instant, viewers draw toward the Facebook live streams. Considering social media as the most potent weapon for spreading up-to-date happenings and highlights of the festival, every one of us can take part to capture the CAF, even from miles away.

ADS-less connection

Every participant looks for at least one person in the sea of crowd, to confidently carry themselves on stage. Support through banners is an advantage in competition; it empowers more than simply verbal communication, as both parties can take in the sense of the vibrant images, well-chosen materials, and language used.

The Southern Tagalog Regional Association of State University and Colleges (STRASUC) Culture and the Arts Festival 2022 illustrates this more intimate two-way communication— fostering a deeper and more stable rapport between people. As the crowd attends the event instead of just giving support delivered through inboxes, they piggyback off each other’s concept of posters and innovate.

Placards visibly show dyed-in-the-wool support for someone. Despite having more than enough ways to express it, often, the abundance of convenient channels drives message overload or worst disconnects people. Banners are a tried-and-true support strategy for increasing engagement and uninterrupted connection between crowds and participants. A premium-like subscription, banner support also provides an ads-less connection

As technology has advanced and communication has expanded its reach, distance is no longer an issue. Network citizens are simply obligated to think and act responsibly when online, especially when sending private messages. It is essential to understand that everyone handles situations differently.

If you know someone who is going through a difficult time, you can provide intangible proof of support, which is expected in situations such as the STRASUC Culture and The Arts Festival 2022. Those who are close to you will expect their fellow to be motivating, as simple messages have a profound effect on the beings of those who receive them.

In case the competition results do not favor your participant, you can still recognize them by commending every effort they made during training days, as well as by sending complimentary videos and letters in private messages. Before and after the competition, some people leave voice messages or make video calls to show their support.

Your small efforts mean a lot to people, as they can touch one's soul. Giving them the assurance and confidence that they will do better and will accomplish things on their own time, will make winning, in every way, possible.

Dr. Nickie Boy Manalo of Incident and Command System assured everyone of their alertness inside the university and Jhune Carlo Ada explained the billeting and transportation for the event.

Twelve kings and 11 queens from participating SUCs were sashed by the committee chairperson of CAF. Coaches from all categories and SUCs were called for a solidarity meeting by their headmasters per competition, discussing the guidelines and criteria, and checking the list of participants.

Pero ita-try po talaga namin ang aming best, since tatlong event lang po ang sinalihan ng WPU,” aniya. Ngunit sa kabila ng kakulangan sa oras, naniniwala si Velasco na 9/10 ang kanilang kumpiyansang makipaglaban sa iba pang kalahok ng CAF. “(Ang rate po namin) siguro ay 9/10, kasi nobody is perfect,” walang alinlangang wika naman ng photography contestant na si Mel Carlo Tan, Visual Communication student ng University of Rizal System.

Ayon sa kanya, matagal na niyang inaral ang photography at hindi na ito naging mahirap sa kanya matapos ang screening sa kanilang unibersidad.

“Nagkaroon po kasi kami ng screening. Hindi naman po siya inabot ng month ‘yong preparation, pero sa tingin ko, nasa mata ng photographer ang kapalaran ng shot kaya ‘di ko rin masabi na nasa training (‘yon),” paliwanag niya.

Ang mga lalabanan ng mga nabanggit na kalahok ay magaganap sa ika-una at ikatlong araw ng STRASUC-CAF (Nobyembre 15 at 17) na gaganapin sa BatSU-PBC.***
