Airports are exciting places! Can you imagine designing a new airport to fly in and out of? Now imagine building a whole city around the new airport. Your challenge in this issue is to design a whole airport precinct in Minecraft Education while thinking about how you keep it all connected and

Team challenge: design an airport of the future Could you design a brand-new airport and a new city around it in Minecraft? Grab a team and build a green and sustainable airport that connects and links to the wider community.

Build your airport in Minecraft Education and capture it in a short video No matter how big or small create something that will work for your community!

• Get feedback on your prototype from other students, a teacher, a community member or expert • Use feedback to modify and retest • Now finalise your airport precinct – is it ready?

Getting started with Minecraft Education NSW public schools have access to Minecraft Education. This powerful edition of Minecraft is specifically designed for students.

Why is Minecraft Education such a great design tool?

Minecraft Education has added features that allow you to create in the Minecraft universe. You can also: Use NPCs (non-player-characters) to provide direction in your world Create posters, boards and slates to convey information Use the Code Builder to supercharge your building process Engineer, power and make your world interactive with Redstone mechanics

Top teacher tips Mr Merrick is a teacher who loves Minecraft! Here are his tips to get started with your design.

Mr Merrick says: When working on a large project like this it is a really good idea to follow the design process – the steps to success model (check out page 4). This will give you a really clear plan for what you want to achieve and how to get there. Here are my top tips on approaching this challenge:

RESEARCH What do existing airports look like? What is cutting edge in airport technology?

DESIGN

Get your friends together and make some groups, give people jobs or roles. Draw some sketches, or storyboards showing the key elements of your design.

PRODUCE

This is where the bulk of the work gets done. Create a flat world and share your join code with your friends and get building!

EVALUATE

The last step is also the most important.

Look at your final result and compare it to your initial designs. Be honest with yourself and your friends. Did you achieve what you set out to do? If not, why? What went wrong? What could you change?

AIRPORT MANAGER It’s so much more than your way to travel... it’s an employment hub, a retail centre, you’ve got restaurants and cafes. Think about freight and cargo being delivered too.

Nancy-Bird Walton: Australian aviation pioneer DID YOU KNOW? The new airport in western Sydney is named after aviation pioneer Nancy-Bird Walton. It will be known as Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.

Nancy-Bird Walton (1915-2009) earned her commercial pilot’s licence at the age of just 19. She learned to fly under the guidance of Sir Charles Kingsford-Smith and was the youngest Australian woman to obtain a pilot’s licence at the time.

ANGEL OF THE OUTBACK She became known as the ‘angel of the outback’ after helping set up the Royal Far West Children’s Health Scheme – a flying medical service which is now known as the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia. Nancy-Bird Walton used her own Gipsy Moth plane as an air ambulance. She went on to fly commercial planes across the world.

After World War II broke out, she returned to Australia to train women in flight skills.

AWARDS AND RECOGNITION Walton went on to create the Australian Women Pilots Association and was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1966. She was declared an Australian National Treasure in 1997, an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) in 2000 and was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women in 2001.
