RED RAIDERS HEAD TO MORGANTOWN TO FACE WEST VIRGINIA
Coming off a close 3-2 loss at Iowa State Wednesday night, Texas Tech returns to the road once again this weekend to face West Virginia at 12 p.m. CT Saturday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum. It will be just Tech’s third trip ever to Morgantown, W.Va., as the Red Raiders enter the match looking to snap a five-match losing streak. The Red Raiders are currently 8-17 on the year and 1-8 in Big 12 Conference play while the Mountaineers are 16-8 overall and 2-6 in league action.
AROUND THE NET • Despite now being Big 12 Conference foes, Texas Tech and West Virginia are meeting for just the sixth time in school
history Saturday afternoon with the Red Raiders leading the overall series, 4-1, with a 2-0 mark in matches in Morgantown. • The first meeting between Tech and West Virginia earlier this year was a complete role reversal from a season ago as the Mountaineers overcame an early first-set loss to take a 3-1 victory in Lubbock. The Red Raiders had previously picked up a pair of 3-1 victories over West Virginia during the 2012 season. • Texas Tech’s lone Big 12 Conference victory came on the road earlier this season with a 3-2 victory on Oct. 12 at TCU. The Red Raiders have fallen to Kansas State and Iowa State on the road since that match. • Texas Tech has found success behind the service line as of late, totaling 20 aces in the last three matches combined, including a season-high 11 this past Wednesday at Iowa State. Tech’s 11 aces against the Cyclones marked its most since collegiate volleyball turned to 25-point sets and its most since recording 16 on Nov. 10, 2004, at Oklahoma. • The Red Raiders will also look to improve its passing against the Mountaineers after Iowa State totaled 15 aces against the Red Raiders on Wednesday, which marked the most for a Big 12 team in league action so far this season. The 26 combined aces marked the most in a Tech match dating back to 2008. • In addition to setting a season high for aces Wednesday night, the Red Raiders also notched a new mark for blocks with 13.5 against the Cyclones, seven of which that came off the hands of Aubree Piper. • The Red Raiders recovered from a two-set deficit to force a fifth and deciding set against Iowa State on Wednesday before the Cyclones used a late 7-1 run to earn the victory. The match aired nationally on ESPNU, which marked Tech’s first-ever appearance on an ESPN network. • Like Tech, West Virginia will also be looking to snap a losing streak Saturday as the Mountaineers have dropped their last four matches, including a 3-1 decision this past Tuesday to Marshall in non-conference action. West Virginia has fallen in six of its seven matches since last facing the Red Raiders on Oct. 5 earlier this season.
