TECH FACES TEXAS FOR FINAL TIME IN 2012

Texas Tech looks to salvage its series with in-state rival Texas Wednesday evening when the Red Raiders host the 5th-ranked Longhorns in a 6 p.m. first pitch at Rocky Johnson Field.

TECH POSTS THIRD-STRAIGHT 30-WIN SEASON

With 16 regular season games remaining, Tech also has already reached the 30-win mark for the third-straight year, marking the first time since 1997-99 that the program has done so. The Red Raiders currently stand 31-9 overall and 4-4 in Big 12 play entering the Texas game Wednesday night. After opening the year 1-4 at the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic, Tech has won 30 of 34 games since that point, with wins in three of seven contests against ranked opponents. Tech’s season-high 13 game winning streak ended last weekend at No. 5 Oklahoma.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country. In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway.

Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

WEEK 10: vs. TEXAS • GAME 41 INSIDE THE TEXAS SERIES The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a nine-game losing streak to the Longhorns Wednesday night as Texas has already guaranteed itself the season series following two wins March 6-7 in Austin. The Longhorns, who were ranked No. 6 in the country at the time, routed Tech, 8-0, over six innings in the opener before hanging on for a 2-1 victory in the second game. Tech is just 1-12 all-time when playing Texas in Lubbock after the Longhorns swept the two-game series at Rocky Johnson Field last year.

ON DECK The Red Raiders return to the road once again this weekend, traveling to Columbia, Mo. to battle the 9thranked Tigers in a three-game series that begins at 6 p.m. Friday from University Field. The series marks the second-straight weekend where Tech has traveled to a top-10 opponent.

LOOKING BACK Tech took one of three games last weekend from 5th-ranked Oklahoma as the Red Raider claimed the middle game with a 5-4 victory. The Red Raiders dropped the opener, 3-1, and the Saturday rubber match, 4-1, falling to 31-9 on the year and 4-4 in Big 12 play. Tech’s victory on Friday evening marked its first over a top-five team since defeating then No. 5 Texas A&M, 6-2, on April 27, 2007 in College Station.

RED RAIDERS BEGIN TOUGH STRETCH WITH THE LONGHORNS Wednesday night’s game against the Longhorns marks the first of 10 total contests for the Red Raiders over a 12-day period, with every game against a current ranked team. Following the Texas game, Tech travels to face No. 9 Missouri in a three-game set before returning home for six games next. The Red Raiders will face No. 17 Texas A&M in a April 17 doubleheader and then close the series with a single game the following day.

Tech will then take just one day off before opening a three-game set against No. 23 Baylor, beginning April 20 at Rocky Johnson Field.

TECH PUTS 12-GAME HOME WINNING STREAK ON THE LINE The Red Raiders will put their season-long 12-game winning streak on the line Wednesday with its one-game series with Texas. According to an informal poll conducted by Boise State, Tech’s run is the fifth-longest active streak in the country, trailing Louisiana-Lafayette (36 games), Boise State (23), Missouri (21 games), and Western Michigan (13 games). The Longhorns were the last team to defeat Tech at Rocky Johnson Field as Texas swept the Red Raiders over two games on April 22-23 last year.

RED RAIDERS MOVE UP TO NO. 28 IN RPI RANKINGS Texas Tech moved up to No. 28 this week in the RPI rankings (ratings percentage index) that are widely used to determine postseason selections and seeding. The Red Raiders had been slotted at No. 29 in each of the first two polls of the season. Tech ranks fifth in the new poll among Big 12 schools, trailing Texas (No. 4), Oklahoma (No. 8), Missouri (No. 14), and Texas A&M (No. 17). Tech wrapped the 2011 season ranked 30th in the poll, earning a NCAA Regional selection for the second-straight year in the process.

TECH APPROACHING HOME RUN RECORD FROM A YEAR AGO With 16 games still remaining in the regular season, the Red Raiders have a chance to snap last year’s singleseason home run record after a successful March left Tech just six shy of its total from 2011. Tech, which hit 33 home runs during the month of March alone, has hit 52 now on the year, seven more than its total through 40 games a year ago. The 52 home runs already mark the second-most in program history as Tech had not hit more than 40 balls out of the park prior to the 2011 season. During Tech’s 13-game winning streak that ended last weekend at Oklahoma, the Red Raiders totaled 27 home runs during a stretch that begun with the New Mexico doubleheader on March 12.

CUSTER RECORDS MOST WINS FOR A TECH PITCHER SINCE RENFRO Despite only being in her first collegiate season, Cara Custer has already achieved as much success as any other Tech pitcher in the last decade. The freshman has earned 18 wins on the year, the most for a Tech pitcher since Amanda Renfro picked up 21 during her 1999 sophomore season. Custer, who is currently ranked second in the Big 12 for wins, is currently fourth on the school’s single-season wins chart with the top-three spots all being held by Renfro. In the career record book, Custer is tied with teammate Ashley Brokeshoulder for eighth all-time already. Renfro is the only Tech player in school history to have a number retired after she totaled 93 wins from 1998-2001, leading Tech to two postseason appearances during that span as well.

RED RAIDER DEFENSE RANKS EIGHTH NATIONALLY With home runs leaving the ballpark in record numbers again this year, it can be easy to forget one key improvement for the Red Raiders this year - the defense. Despite three errors last weekend at Oklahoma, the Red Raiders remained in the top 10 of the NCAA rankings for fielding percentage as Tech is now eighth in the country with a .978 average. Tech currently ranks first among Big 12 schools in fielding percentage and assists and just four shy of Texas A&M for the conference high in putouts.

TECH OFF TO BEST START IN BIG 12 PLAY SINCE 2006 The Red Raiders’ 4-4 start to league action marks the school’s best record through the first eight games since the 2006 squad also went 4-4 to start conference play. In 2006, league series covered only two games as Tech followed a Big 12-opening sweep at the hands of No. 19 Baylor by splitting series with No. 15 Oklahoma and new No. 15 Texas A&M the following week. The Red Raiders came back to sweep Iowa State later that weekend in what would be their final conference win of the season. Tech wrapped 2006 with a 19-35 overall record and a 4-13 mark in Big 12 play before ending the year with a first-round loss to Missouri at the Big 12 Tournament in Oklahoma City. This season marks the first in league history where all conference series are all three games each.

CUSTER STILL AMONG BIG 12 WINS LEADERS Despite going 1-1 last weekend at Oklahoma, Cara Custer remains among the Big 12 wins total as she is tied with the Sooners’ Keilani Ricketts for second in the league with 18 victories. The duo trail Mel Dumezich of Texas A&M who picked up a pair of victories last weekend at Iowa State to take the league lead. Custer, who tossed her first career no-hitter March 16 against Seton Hall, is also among the league leaders in innings pitched, strikeouts, appearances, games started, saves, shutouts, and complete games.

PEREZ NAMED BIG 12 CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .714 with four home runs and 12 RBI against Midwestern State and Iowa State, Adriana Perez was named the Big 12 Co-Player of the Week on April 3, the second weekly award honor for a Tech player this season. Perez frustrated opposing pitchers all week as she was 10-for-14 at the plate while posting at least two hits and two RBI in all four games. The junior concluded the weekend with an eighth-inning walkoff home run that sent Tech to a three-game sweep of Iowa State. Perez shared the award with Oklahoma’s Lauren Chamberlain. Sandy James is the other Tech player to earn the award this year after picking up the accolade on Feb. 21.

BLEDSOE FINDS THE LONG BALL AGAINST THE CYCLONES Emily Bledsoe took advantage of the long ball during Tech’s sweep of Iowa State as the senior hit three home runs in the series, including two during Tech’s 5-2 victory in the series finale. Bledsoe now has four home runs on the year and 17 for her career which is tied for seventh in school history. She was hitting .432 during Tech’s 13-game winning streak as she has scored 14 runs and posted 13 RBI during that span. The successful weekend brought Bledsoe’s average up to .305, marking the first time she has reached the .300 mark this season.

INDIVIDUAL NOTES u Mikey Kenney was caught stealing for the first time in her career in the series finale against Iowa State as her eighth-inning attempt ended a streak where she was 30-for-30, including 11-for-11 this season. Kenney is still among the Big 12 leaders in stolen bases. u Kenney and Emily Bledsoe both snapped the school’s career record for runs scored against the Cyclones, passing Paula Workman who came across 135 times from 1997-2000. Kenney ended the weekend with 139 runs scored with Bledsoe trailing just one run behind. u Bledsoe needs just three more doubles to enter the top 10 in Big 12 history. Already the school’s all-time leader in the category, Bledsoe has totaled 45 doubles over her career. u Bledsoe moved to third all-time in career hits last weekend at OU as passed current volunteer assistant coach Leah Legler. Bledsoe now has 185 hits over four seasons, one more than Legler’s total from 2007-10. u Cara Custer’s save last Saturday marked her third of the season, moving her into the Big 12 lead with Kansas’ Alicia Pille. She is one save shy of tying Erin Crawford (2006) for the school single-season record.

PEREZ CONTINUES TO CREATE HAVOC IN CLEANUP SPOT Adriana Perez continues to cause problems for opposing pitchers as she is now hitting .395 on the year with 13 home runs and a team-high 44 RBI. The junior enters this week as the Big 12 leader in hits (49) while also ranking among the top performers in batting average (.395) home runs (13), RBI (44), total bases (94), and slugging percentage (.758). Perez saw her season-high 14-game hitting streak come to an end against Oklahoma as the junior combined to go 0-for-9 in the series. It was the longest hitting streak for any Tech player since Elyssa Sigala recorded a hit in 21-straight games during the 2004 season.

HALL BECOMES BIG 12 DOUBLES LEADER Logan Hall enters Texas game as the Big 12 doubles leader with 12 on the year. Hall doubled twice during the series finale against the Sooners last Sunday, moving her two past Nadia Taylor of Texas for the league high.

Following a relatively slow start to the season, Hall posted seven doubles during the month of March alone before opening April with a first-inning double in the Sunday game against Iowa State. She is now hitting .289 on the year with 19 runs scored and 12 RBI. RYBA RETURNS TO THE LINEUP After 14 games away from the field, Melisa Ryba returned the field at the Seton Hall Classic, crushing a threerun homer in the first plate appearance. She came off the bench in all five games that weekend, replacing Katelyn Williams in the lineup to go 5-for-11 at the plate. The junior kept the hot-hitting going against Midwestern State as she went 1-for-2 at the plate with a second-inning home run that carried over the scoreboard in right field. Ryba earned her first start in the game since facing Idaho State Feb. 18 in Las Vegas. Prior to the Seton Hall Classic, Ryba had not previously seen action since facing UTEP on Feb. 25 in Waco.

CUSTER THROWS FIRST CAREER NO-HITTER Custer tossed her first career no-hitter in Tech’s second game of the Seton Hall Classic, a 11-0 run-rule of the host Pirates. It marked the eighth no-hitter in school history and the first since Kermitria Ward held Dayton hitless on March 6 last year. She became just the third Tech freshman to record a no-hitter, joining Ward and fellow teammate Brittany Talley. Custer struck out a season-high nine Pirates in the outing before coming back two days later to keep Seton Hall hitless all the way till the third inning when Colltey Sheldon slapped an infield single. The Spanaway, Wash. native was named the tournament’s top pitcher following the game.

KENNEY SETS CAREER HOME RUN RECORD After setting the Tech career home run record against Stony Brook March 14, Mikey Kenney continued to add to her record in the Seton Hall Classic, pounding her team-leading 10th dinger of the year against the host Pirates during pool play. Kenney now has 30 home runs in her career, three more than previous record holder Kim Martinez who totaled 27 during the 1997 and 1999 seasons. Her 11 home runs on the year currently rank third in the Big 12 behind Lauren Chamberlain of Oklahoma and teammate Adriana Perez.

WEEK 10: vs. TEXAS • GAME 41 SPRING BREAK GOOD FOR TECH’S AVERAGES To say the Tech offense enjoyed a successful Spring Break at the plate might be an understatement. During Tech’s nine games during the week, Tech hit .374 as a team, totaling 14 home runs and 71 runs during that span, outscoring opponents 71-19 overall. The Red Raiders had eight players with 10 or more at-bats post at least a .300 average at the plate, led by Raven Richardson’s .600 mark.

Holley Gentsch 13 4 .308 0 2 HAYS EARNS WIN NO. 100 AT TEXAS TECH Shanon Hays picked up his 100th victory while the head coach at Texas Tech with the Red Raiders’ 4-1 win in the series opener at Stony Brook. Tech went on to win the second game as well, moving Hays to 101-41 at the time in two-plus seasons at Tech. The Lubbock native, who is 218-57 in five seasons as a collegiate coach, trails only Renee Luers-Gillespie as the school’s all-time winningest coach. Gillespie went 136-159-1 during just over four seasons from 1996-2000.

BLEDSOE HEATS UP DURING TRIP TO NEW YORK After struggling for the first part of the season, Emily Bledsoe was able to string several hits together during Tech’s trip the New York area, compiling a .476 average (10-for-21) over the seven-game stretch. Bledsoe also scored six runs during that time while adding five RBI and three doubles. She now has 44 doubles for her career, the most in Tech history, which leave her four shy of entering the Big 12 record book as well. The performance helped Bledsoe move her season average to .284 overall, the highest its been all year.

DON’T FORGET TALLEY Even with Cara Custer’s emergence early in the season, Tech would not be 30-7 on the year without the consistency of sophomore Brittany Talley. The left-hander, who provides a good 1-2 punch in the rotation with Custer, is 9-2 on the year with a 2.13 earned-run average. In 10 starts this season, Talley has given up more than one earned run only three times. She has tossed five complete games on the year, including one shutout, in 77.0 innings.

PENCIL BLEDSOE IN THE LINEUP During Cal Ripken, Jr.’s historic stretch with the Baltimore Orioles, he earned the iconic nickname “Iron Man” after breaking the major league record for 2,632 consecutive games played. While not nearing Ripken’s mark, Emily Bledsoe has impressed many not just for her glove or bat but for her toughness as well as the Fulshear, Texas native has started in all 208 games since her freshman season in 2009. With her start Tuesday evening against Midwestern State, Bledsoe passed Heather Parker (2004-07) for seventh on the career games played chart. If Bledsoe were to start in each of Tech’s final 23 games, she would wrap her career ranked fifth all-time with 227 games played.

TECH BATS COME TO LIFE AGAINST NEW MEXICO Heading into the New Mexico doubleheader, Tech head coach Shanon Hays had hoped his offense would have produced a few more runs so far this season. He got his wish early on against the 23rd Lobos as Tech set a new season high in hits during the first game en route to scoring a total of 17 runs over the two games.

The Red Raiders capitalized on two separate seven-run innings which allowed Tech to break the first game open in the third before using another seven-run frame in the fourth to bounce back from an early 3-0 deficit in the finale.

NOTABLES u Texas Tech’s 16 game road trip to start the season marks the longest stretch away from Lubbock under Shanon Hays. The Red Raiders longest streak away from home to start the season was in 2009 when the Red Raiders opened with their first 22 games were at road tournaments. u Tech built a 10-game winning streak before falling to Texas State in the championship game of the Texas Shootout in Waco. That streak was the Red Raiders’ longest at the time since running off 11-straight from March 11-20 last year as Tech closed the non-conference schedule. u The Red Raiders have been aggressive on the base paths so far this season, swiping 50 bases in 60 attempts thus far. Mikey Kenney and Kermitria Ward are among the Big 12 leaders in the category as the duo are a combined 20-for-21 in attempts this year. u Tech had a 34.0 errorless inning streak going last weekend until the Red Raiders committed two against Binghamton on Saturday. “THE ROCK” GETS ADDITIONAL SEATING Texas Tech fans have the added comfort of not having to fight for a seat this season as over 500 seats were added to Rocky Johnson Field in the offseason. The seating addition replaced the grass berms that previously stood above both dugouts and over both bullpen areas. The facility currently has seating for 1,165 fans with room to add portable seating as well.

OFFENSE SHINES IN OPENING WEEKEND After hitting just .240 over the first 16 games of the season, the Red Raiders responded with a .386 average over six games against Binghamton and UT-Arlington, bringing their season average up 42 points in the process. Tech, which ranked fourth nationally in scoring offense and batting average last year, had at least 10 hits in four of six games en route to an undefeated weekend. Mikey Kenney led the way with a .533 average on the weekend that included three home runs and four stolen bases. Logan Hall trailed close behind after going 11-for-21 with three RBI and six runs scored. Tech is 13-1 this year when scoring three or more runs.

TECH PITCHERS GOING THE DISTANCE Led by primary starters Brittany Talley and Cara Custer, the Tech pitching staff has been going the distance for the most part this season, already tossing 16 complete games over the first 34 games, including four times at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas. Custer leads the squad as she has finished out 11 games so far while Talley has added five complete games of her own. The duo has combined for six shutouts on the year, two of which that took place at the Texas Shootout in Waco.

RED RAIDERS REBOUND NICELY IN VEGAS After what many considered a disappointing 1-4 start to the season, the Red Raiders rebounded rather nicely in Las Vegas, going 6-0 while defeating three teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago in Long Beach State, Portland State, and DePaul along with Ohio State who was receiving votes in the top 25 polls at the time.

Tech faced six schools that made the postseason last year in its first 11 games, going 4-2 in those contests.

JAMES NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting over .400 with a pair of home runs, Sandy James was named the Big 12 Player of the Week Tuesday, marking the second time the junior has earned the honor. She hit .409 at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic while driving in nine RBI to lead the Red Raider offense. She becomes the first Red Raider in school history to be named the league’s Player of the Week twice. She is also just the second Tech player to earn a weekly award on multiple occasions, joining Amanda Renfro who was named the Pitcher of the Week five times over the 1998-01 seasons.

HAYS EARNS WIN NO. 200 The Red Raiders’ 2-1 win over DePaul marked win No. 200 for head coach Shanon Hays as the third-year head coach is now 205-55 in four-plus seasons as a collegiate coach. Hays, who is 91-39 at Tech, recently passed Theresa Wilson for third on the winningest Tech coaches list as Wilson went 89-123 during the 2005-08 seasons.

UNFAMILIAR TERRITORY The Red Raiders entered unfamiliar territory in Las Vegas as Tech had never gone into a game with a losing record under head coach Shanon Hays. Tech lost only five non-conference games over the last two seasons, including only one in 2011 alone. The Red Raiders had a tough weekend in Arizona, though, falling to Northwestern, No. 14 Tennessee, No. 9 Stanford, and Cal Poly in what is the worst start to a season since the 2008 squad opened the year with 12-straight losses. Tech’s four-game losing streak to regular season nonconference opponents also marks its longest since late in the 2009 season.

• James was the only Red Raider to record a hit in every game of the Oklahoma series last weekend as the junior went 6-for-10 at the plate with a home run and pair of RBI. James belted her eighth home run of the season in the series opener and returned to go 3-for-4 in the Friday game and then 2-for3 with a RBI double in the series finale.

WEEK 10: vs. TEXAS • GAME 41 BLEDSOE A CANDIDATE FOR LOWE’S SR. CLASS Earlier this season, Emily Bledsoe was named one of 30 candidates for the prestigious Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award that is presented annually to the softball student-athlete that excels not only on the diamond but also in the classroom and community. The 30 candidates will be trimmed to 10 finalists midway through the season with the winner being named following a nationwide vote at the Women’s College World Series.

BUILDING THAT RPI Part of Tech’s success over the last two seasons in getting to a NCAA Regional has stemmed from its difficult regular season schedule. Tech played six non-conference teams last year that made the postseason and is set to face seven this year with three of those games taking place at the Kajikawa Classic. The Red Raiders dropped San Diego State, 5-4, before falling to both No. 14 Tennessee and No. 9 Stanford, who both earned national seeds a year ago. Tech faced three more regional squads from a year ago last weekend as Long Beach State, Portland State, and DePaul all made the postseason in 2011.

RED RAIDERS FACE QUALITY ARMS IN ARIZONA If there was one certainty from Tech’s opening weekend at the Kajikawa Classic, it was that Tech faced two of the country’s top pitchers in Tennessee’s Ellen Renfro and Stanford’s Teagan Gerhart. The duo combined to hold Tech to just one run which came off a Mikey Kenney solo home run in the second inning off the Cardinal. Renfro was the SEC Freshman of the Year last season after compiling a 26-7 record, while Gerhart earned All-Pac 12 first team honors after going 26-13 in the circle.

TECH PICKS UP VOTES IN PRESEASON POLLS For the second-straight season, Texas Tech started the season receiving votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and the ESPN/USA Softball preseason polls. The Red Raiders picked up five votes in the NFCA poll and then six in the ESPN rankings.

One of seven Big 12 schools appearing in the polls, Tech will face a total of 14 teams this season that are ranked or receiving votes in the preseason rankings.

RED RAIDERS FACE CHALLENGE IN THE DESERT The Red Raiders had a tough task at hand at the Kajikawa Classic as four of their five opponents were ranked or receiving votes in the preseason rankings. Stanford led the pack after being ranked No. 9 by the NFCA and No. 10 by ESPN.com, while Tennessee is No. 14 in the NFCA poll and No. 9 in the ESPN rankings. San Diego State was receiving votes in both polls while Northwestern picked up two votes in the ESPN rankings. Tennessee, Stanford, and San Diego State were all selected to a NCAA Regional last year with the Lady Vols and Cardinal eventually advancing to the Super Regionals.

RED RAIDERS RETURN 15 PLAYERS FROM 2011 With 15 returners back from its 2011 squad, Tech could be primed for another breakout season in 2012. Of those 15 returners, eight were position starters a year ago while Tech’s top two pitchers, senior Kelsey Dennis and sophomore Brittany Talley, also return in the circle. The Red Raiders had no seniors on their roster last year when Tech finished 42-16 overall after falling to Arizona in the finale of the NCAA Tucson Regional.

TAKING THE NEXT STEP Immediately following Tech’s season-ending loss to Arizona in the NCAA Tucson Regional, head coach Shanon Hays had one message for his young team - to take the next step in 2012. Advancing to the postseason would no longer just be the goal. Knowing the majority of that squad would return this year, he challenged the group to win a regional this season, a feat that has not been accomplished in school history. The Red Raiders have fallen in the regional finale in each of the last two seasons.

TECH BOASTS A RECORD EIGHT SENIORS After only having a total of two seniors on the roster during his first two seasons, Shanon Hays will have a senior-laden squad for the first time as eight seniors return for their final season in scarlet and black. No Tech team had previously boasted more than six seniors on its roster since softball returned as an intercollegiate sport in 1996. The only two seniors in Hays’ tenure were in 2010 when Ashly Jacobs and Leah Legler completed their eligibility. Both are still associated with the program this season with Jacobs filling the role of graduate student manager and Legler as the volunteer assistant coach.

TECH RETURNS ONE OF NATION’S TOP LINEUPS The majority of last year’s lineup that hit .361 and ranked fourth nationally in both batting average and scoring average returns this season as the Red Raiders

bring back eight position starters from a year ago. Tech set the Big 12 Conference record last year with its .361 batting average as seven regulars in the lineup hit .300 or better during the season. Raven Richardson led all hitters with a .384 mark followed closely behind by Emily Bledsoe and her .383 average.

BLEDSOE NAMED TO PRESEASON WATCH LIST Senior Emily Bledsoe was named to the USA Softball Player of the Year Watch List prior to the season, joining 49 players nationwide including 10 from the Big 12 Conference. Bledsoe, a Fulshear, Texas native, hit a career-high .383 as a junior and is already a fixture in the school’s record book. She is the first Tech player to be named to any preseason watch list in school history.

TECH HITS THE ROAD FOR NON-CONFERENCE After playing the majority of non-conference games at home the past two seasons, the Red Raiders will be hitting the road more often this year with four nonconference tournaments away from Lubbock. Following Tech’s trip to Tempe to open the season the Red Raiders will travel to Las Vegas (Feb. 17-19) for the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic, Waco (Feb. 24-26) for the Texas Shootout, and South Orange, N.J. (March 16-18) for the Seton Hall Classic.

HAYS LOOKS TO CUSTER FOR BOOST IN CIRCLE When pitching coach Aly Sartini was out recruiting the Las Vegas area in the summer of 2010, she sat in by chance on the Washington Lady Hawks travel team where this young right-hander with great velocity and good movement was retiring hitters left and right. Sartini along with Shanon Hays immediately began recruiting that right-hander, current freshman Cara Custer, early and secured her commitment before several of the top programs across the country came calling. Now, the Tech coaching staff is expecting the Spanaway, Wash. native to be a dominating presence in the circle for a Tech pitching staff that had a 3.50 ERA a year ago.

RED RAIDERS ADD JUCO CATCHER OF THE YEAR Tech continued to add hitters in the offseason with the signing of two-time California JUCO Catcher of the Year Adriana Perez. One of the top junior college prospects in the country last year, Perez is expected to bolster an already-deep catcher staff that consists of seniors Holley Gentsch and Cydney Allen along with junior Randi Tongate. Perez hit over .500 in each of her two seasons at Antelope Valley College in California, totaling 31 home runs and 117 RBI during that two year stretch.

RYBA RETURNS TO DIAMOND AFTER YEAR OFF Melisa Ryba will be returning to the softball diamond for the first time since the 2010 season this weekend as the redshirt junior sat out the 2011 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Ryba, who could play varies positions for Tech, transferred from Northern Colorado after hitting .323 as a sophomore with seven home runs and 32 RBI. She was named an All-Independent Co-Freshman of the Year in 2009 before Northern Colorado joined the Pacific Coast Softball Conference in 2010 when she was a second team PCSC All-Mountain selection.

BIG 12 PLAY TURNS TO THREE-GAME SERIES For the first time in Big 12 history, all conference series will be three games each.

The league had previously gone with a two-game format and a postseason conference tournament until the 2011 season when the tournament was cut. There will be a total of 24 conference games, six more than the 2010 season. With the departure of Nebraska, the league is a nine-team conference as Kansas State does not sponsor softball.

TECH PICKED 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL Even with lofty expectations and the majority of its 2011 squad back for another season, Texas Tech was picked seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll of conference coaches. The league is coming off a record year where eight teams (of 10) advanced to the postseason with four of those eventually composing the eightteam Women’s College World Series. Missouri was the preseason favorite to take the league title followed by Oklahoma and then Texas.

In two seasons as Texas Tech’s head softball coach, Shanon Hays has taken the Red Raiders to consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, breaking a nineyear postseason absence and laying the framework for a program on the rise in the process.

After inheriting a squad that was only 15-42 in 2009, Hays led the Red Raiders to back-to-back 30-plus win seasons, including a 42-16 campaign in 2011 that marked the highest winning percentage in school history.

Prior to Hays’ arrival, Tech had only advanced to the postseason twice in program history with its last trip being in 2001, which was also its most-previous season with a winning record. Tech’s 80-34 record under Hays is one win shy of its previous four seasons combined as the Red Raiders won 81 games from 2006-09.

Most importantly, though, the Red Raiders have been in the postseason each season, advancing to the NCAA Stanford Regional in 2010 and the Tucson Regional in 2011. Tech fell in the regional finale each year as eventual College World Series participant Hawaii ended the squad’s run in 2010 while host Arizona dropped the Red Raiders in 2011.

No Tech squad had previously advanced to a regional in consecutive seasons, nor had any team previously appeared in the top 25 rankings. The Red Raiders changed that on Feb. 15, 2011 as they appeared in the top 25 of both polls, breaking a drought that lasted over a decade. Tech, which had not been ranked previously in either poll since the end of the 1999 season, climbed as high as No. 19 throughout the year, the highest ranking in school history.

Under Hays, Tech has consistently produced one of the top lineups in the nation as the Red Raiders spent most of the 2011 season with the highest batting average in the nation before ending the year fourth overall. The squad’s 7.17 runs per game ranked fourth as well in scoring nationally, while its .533 slugging percentage was just inside the top 10 nationally in ninth.

With that type of production up and down the lineup, the Red Raiders have snapped 13 single-season offensive marks in the school record book, including the previous highs for batting average, runs, hits, doubles, home runs, and RBI.

While playing in a conference dominated by pitching, Tech has only been shutout six times under Hays as the Red Raiders have been among the Big 12 leaders in most offensive categories as well. Four players - Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney - have been honored on either the All-Big 12 second team or on the NFCA postseason awards lists following each season.

Tech’s transformation should come as little surprise after Hays’ work at Lubbock Christian. Following his appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his twoyear tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009.

Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five NFCA and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 1999-2001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 career wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, two sons, Hunter, Heath, and daughter, Hampton.
