TEXAS TECH AND TCU Texas Tech and TCU will be meeting for the second straight season as conference foes after TCU entered the Big 12 Conference in 2012. Texas Tech holds a 29-23-3 all-time lead in the series that dates back to 1926. The Red Raiders and Horned Frogs were conference foes in the old Southwest Conference until 1995 when the league broke apart with the formation of the Big 12 Conference. Tech and TCU played twice as non-conference opponents (in Lubbock in 2004 and in Fort Worth in 2006) after the breakup of the SWC with both teams claiming home wins. • The home game against TCU is the first since the 2004 season when the Red Raiders handed the Horned Frogs a 70-35 defeat. Texas Tech has a pair of current coaches that were instrumental in that victory in 2004 as offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie was the quarterback and safeties coach Trey Haverty was a wide receiver. Cumbie threw for 441 yards and four touchdowns while Haverty caught two passes for 16 yards. TCU jumped out to an early 21-0 lead in the game before Texas Tech scored on five straight possessions to earn the comeback win. • Last year’s game in Fort Worth was a thriller as it took three overtimes for the Red Raiders to escape with a 56-53 win. Quarterback Seth Doege found receiver Alex Torres in the back of the end zone for the game-winning score in the third overtime. The two teams combined for 905 yards of total offense with TCU out-gaining the Red Raiders 516 to 389. Eric Ward led the Texas Tech receiving corps with six catches for 61 yards and three touchdowns. TEXAS TECH IN HOME BIG 12 OPENERS • Texas Tech is 12-5 all-time in Big 12 home openers. • Texas Tech will be looking to snap a three-game losing skid in home Big 12 openers. Tech has dropped its last three to Texas in 2010, Texas A&M in 2011 and Oklahoma in 2012. • For the fourth consecutive year, Texas Tech will be playing a ranked opponent in its home Big 12 opener. • Mike Leach was the last Tech head coach to win his Big 12 home debut as the Red Raiders beat Baylor 28-0 in his first season in 2000.
