TEXAS TECH AND STEPHEN F. AUSTIN Saturday’s game against Stephen F. Austin will mark the second all-time meeting in the series with the Red Raiders holding a 1-0 advantage. Tech’s only meeting against SFA was a 58-3 victory over the Lumberjacks on Nov. 24, 2001 at Jones AT&T Stadium. That game against SFA in 2001 was not on the original schedule but was added following the terrorist attacks on our nation on Sept. 11. The Red Raiders were originally scheduled to face UTEP on Thursday, Sept. 13 in the Sun Bowl on ESPN2. The game against UTEP was then pushed back to Saturday, Sept. 15 and later canceled when the NCAA announced that all college football games that weekend would be canceled/postponed. Due to schedule conflicts, the game was unable to be rescheduled and that forced Texas Tech to add a post-Thanksgiving game at home against SFA. In that game against the Lumberjacks, then quarterback Kliff Kingsbury threw for 366 yards (39-of-47 passing) and five touchdowns. The Red Raiders piled up 542 yards of total offense, including 110 rushing yards. TEXAS TECH IN HOME SEASON OPENERS • Texas Tech holds an all-time record of 66-18-3 in home season openers. • Texas Tech defeated Northwestern State 44-6 in last year’s home opener. • Texas Tech has won its last 20 home-opening games. • Then No. 15 Oklahoma was the last team to defeat Texas Tech in a home opener as the Sooners scored a 34-9 win over the Red Raiders on Sept. 3, 1992. That game was prior to the formation of the Big 12 Conference. • Texas Tech is playing an FCS opponent in its home opener for the fifth time in the last nine seasons. • Since 2000, Texas Tech has averaged 45 points-per-game in season openers. The most points scored by Tech in a home season opener during that stretch was 70 against TCU in 2004. The Red Raiders defeated the Horned Frogs 70-35 in that game. • Defensively, the Red Raiders have held opponents to an average of 17.1 points-per-game in home season openers dating back to the 2000 season. • Texas Tech first-year coaches are 12-2-1 when opening the season at home. The last eight head coaches in Tech history have won their home openers, including Tommy Tuberville (35-27 over SMU in 2010) and Mike Leach (24-3 over New Mexico in 2000).
