OLD SOUTHWEST CONFERENCE RIVALRY TO BE RENEWED ON FRIDAY NIGHT Texas Tech and SMU renew an old rivalry dating back to the Southwest Conference on Friday evening at Ford Stadium. The two teams will be meeting for the 49th time overall and for the 8th time since the breakup of the SWC back in 1995. Texas Tech holds a 32-16 advantage against the Mustangs and has won 14 straight games in the series dating back to a 48-24 win in Dallas on Nov. 18, 1989. SMU’s last win against the Red Raiders was a 13-7 win in Lubbock on Nov. 15, 1986. The seven non-conference games between Tech and SMU, since 1996, are the most between a founding member of the Big 12 Conference and the remaining teams of the old SWC. TEXAS TECH IN SEASON OPENERS For the first time since a Labor Day match-up at SMU on Sept. 3, 2007, Texas Tech will open its season on the road when the Red Raiders travel to Dallas to face the SMU Mustangs. • Texas Tech holds a 59-26-3 all-time record in season openers. The Red Raiders dismantled Northwest State 44-6 in last year’s season opener in front of 50,236 fans at Jones AT&T Stadium. • In season openers on the road, Texas Tech is 11-15-1 all-time. Since 1990, Texas Tech has opened on the road at Ohio State (twice), Penn State, Kansas State, Tennessee and Arizona. The Red Raiders have opened the season at SMU twice before (2004 and 2007). • Texas Tech has an all-time record of 8-4-1 in season openers when a head coach makes his debut. Tommy Tuberville won his coaching debut against SMU in 2010 while Mike Leach won his debut against New Mexico in 2000. • Since converting to the spread offense under Mike Leach in 2000, Texas Tech has averaged 40 points-per-game over the course of 13 season openers. Additionally, Tech has averaged 516.38 yards of total-offense in season openers dating back to 2000. • Texas Tech is 5-1 all-time when opening the season against SMU. The Red Raiders and Mustangs have tangled in season openers in 1933, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010. In those games, Texas Tech has averaged 34 points-per-game while SMU has averaged 12.6. Since 2003, Texas Tech has averaged 538.4 yards of total offense in five season openers against SMU. • Texas Tech will face a team from the state of Texas in a season opener for the 46th time when the Red Raiders travel to SMU.
