IT’S FOOTBALL TIME IN WEST TEXAS Months of speculation, talk radio, water cooler chat, pundit predictions, and rankings of every thing imaginable can finally be put to rest. It’s FOOTBALL time in West Texas. Texas Tech will kick off its 88th season of football on Saturday when the Red Raiders host the Northwestern State (FCS Division) Demons at Jones AT&T Stadium at 6 p.m. The Red Raiders enter the 2012 season with a program record of 524-405-32 that dates all the way back to 1925 when Texas Tech fielded its first team on the gridiron. The oldest sport on campus, Texas Tech Football will play its 17th season as a charter member of the Big 12 Conference where it has compiled a league record of 71-58 . The game will be televised live on Fox Sports Southwest Plus and on the 38-station Texas Tech Sports Radio Network from Learfield Sports.

THE MATCH-UP Texas Tech and Northwestern State will both open the 2012 season on Saturday. Texas Tech is 1-0 all-time against Northwestern State as the Red Raiders handed the Demons a 75-7 whipping back on Sept. 29, 2007, in front of 52,893 fan at Jones AT&T Stadium. In that game, Graham Harrell threw for 338 yards and five touchdowns including three to Michael Crabtree, who set a school record for receptions in a season by a freshman. In all, Texas Tech put up 628 yards of total offense, including 534 through the air. Texas Tech is 9-0 all time against the FCS since 2005, when Division I-AA was reclassified. The Red Raiders have never used an FCS win to count towards bowl eligibility.
