RED RAIDERS HEAD WEST FOR FIRST ROAD TRIP OF THE 2011 SEASON Fresh off its lone bye week of the 2011 season, the Red Raiders will head west to Albuquerque on Friday afternoon to begin preparations for a Saturday match-up against the New Mexico Lobos. The game at New Mexico will mark the first road trip of the season for the Red Raiders as they opened the year two weeks ago with a 50-10 win over Texas State at Jones AT&T Stadium. Saturday’s game will mark the 43rd all-time meeting between the two schools which are separated by just 321 miles.

Saturday’s game will be televised nationally by Versus and is available in Lubbock on Suddenlink, AT&T U-Verse and NTS Communications. Announcing the game for Versus will be Paul Burmeister (play-by2011 BIG 12 STANDINGS play), Shaun King (analyst) and Anthony Herron (sidelines).

Doege, who played most of the game, went 23 for 33. He threw two touchdown passes for 20 yards and one for 10.

Eric Stephens ran for two touchdowns - one a 46-yarder where he went untouched up the middle to put the Red Raiders up 23-10. He finished with 118 yards on 21 carries.

Darrin Moore, Doege’s favorite target, caught 12 passes for 221 yards.

The Bobcats (0-1) started off solid with an option-type ground game that gave Texas Tech’s defense fits. Three of the Bobcats’ four fumbles, by quarterback Shaun Rutherford and running backs Marcus Curry and Terrence Franks, led to touchdowns for the Red Raiders (0-1).

Once Texas Tech’s offense got on track they moved easily down the field, mixing its pass-heavy offense with the run. The Red Raiders actually ran more than they passed but got more yards in the air. Texas Tech got 157 yards on 33 carries.

F

resh off an eight win season and a win over Northwestern in the TicketCity Bowl, Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville begins his second season.

In year one, Tuberville led the Red Raiders to an 8-5 record and became the first coach in school history to win a bowl game in his first season. Armed with a prolific offense and an improving defense, the Red Raiders secured their 11th consecutive bowl bid by ending the regular-season with back-to-back wins. Tuberville’s strong bowl history proved beneficial for the Red Raiders as he led them to a 45-38 win over Northwestern, which gave Tech its third consecutive win over a Big Ten foe. His successful debut led to a one-year contract extention that will keep him on the Tech sideline through the 2015 season.

The excitement for Tuberville’s first season was historic as a new single-season school record for season tickets was established with sales peaking at 46,565. Along the way, Tech also set a new standard for home attendance as as an average of 57,107 fans attended the six home games at Jones A&T Stadium.

Tuberville inherited a program (Jan. 10, 2010) that had been bowl eligible for a Big 12 record 16 consecutive seasons and won 29 games in the last three seasons.

In 10 seasons at Auburn, Tuberville led the Tigers to 85 overall wins, which ranks fourth in school history. The Tigers also won 49 Southeastern Conference games, a number that is the fourth-best mark in the SEC. Tuberville led Auburn to seven straight bowl appearances, including New Year’s Day bowl games in four of those years.

In 2007, Tuberville led Auburn to an 9-4 mark, including a 5-3 record in the Southeastern Conference with wins at No. 4 Florida and a record-setting sixth consecutive win over Alabama in the Iron Bowl. The Tigers concluded the season with an overtime victory over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, marking the program’s fifth bowl victory in the last six seasons. For the second consecutive year, Tuberville was a finalist for the Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award for his efforts on and off the field.

The 2006 season saw Tuberville direct the Tigers to their second season with at least 10 wins in the previous three years with an 11-2 record after a 17-14 victory over Nebraska in the AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic. One of three finalist for the inaugural Liberty Mutual Coach of the Year award, Tuberville’s 2006 squad was the only program in the country to defeat two teams ranked in the top five nationally - National Champion Florida and LSU. Coming off a perfect 13-0 season in 2004, expectations for Tommy Tuberville’s 2005 Auburn squad were modest after the Tigers lost four players to the first round of the NFL draft, including their entire starting backfield. But Auburn surprised many of the experts, finishing 9-3 and earning a share of its fifth Southeastern Conference Western Division title in six years. Auburn ended the regular season with back-to-back victories over Georgia and Alabama - two teams ranked at the time in the top 10 - setting a new school record in the process with 22 victories over a two year period.

In 2004, Tuberville led Auburn to its best season ever as the Tigers won a school-record 13 games and captured the SEC Championship and the NOKIA Sugar Bowl title. Auburn won its first conference title since 1989 including its first outright championship since 1987.

Auburn defeated five top 15 teams, becoming just the 10th NCAA Division I-A team to finish 13-0 or better. The Tigers earned their first ever berth in a Bowl Championship Series game and defeated VirginiaTech, 16-13 in the Sugar Bowl. For his efforts, Tuberville was named the AFCA, Associated Press, Paul “Bear” Bryant, FCA, SEC and Walter Camp Coach of the Year.

The season before Tuberville’s arrival, Auburn finished with a dismal 3-8 overall record and a last place finish in the SEC Western Division. Tuberville guided the program back to the top of the league standings, leading Auburn to an SEC Championship, five Western Division titles including outright championships in 2000 and 2004 and co-championships in 2001, 2002 and 2005. Tuberville directed Auburn to eight consecutive bowl appearances, including five New Year’s Day bowl berths and three consecutive January 1 bowl games from 2005-07.

In 2006, 11 players had graduated before the start of the season, and Auburn had 16 graduates on its 2007 AT&T Cotton Bowl roster. In 2005, 12 players graduated prior to the Capital One Bowl, while in 2004, nine players who had already earned their degrees played in the Nokia Sugar

Bowl. In 2003, linebacker Dontarrious Thomas, a three-time SEC Honor Roll selection, was one of eight Division I players named a National College Scholar-Athlete which awarded him a $18,000 postgraduate scholarship from the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame.

While at Ole Miss from 1995-98, Tuberville posted a 25-20 record. Inheriting a Rebel program plagued by NCAA sanctions and probation, he guided Ole Miss to a winning record in his first season in 1995, despite having just 61 players on scholarship. He did not have a full compliment of scholarship players to work with in any of his four years at Ole Miss.

By the time he had three recruiting classes under his belt, Tuberville led Ole Miss to an 8-4 mark and a victory in the inaugural Motor City Bowl in 1997. His efforts earned him Associated Press SEC Coach of the Year Honors and American Football Quarterly magazine selected him as runnerup for its Schutt Sports Coach of the Year honor.

Prior to becoming head coach at Ole Miss, Tuberville served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Texas A&M for one season. In 1994, he helped lead the Aggies to a 10-0-1 record and No. 8 final ranking by the Associated Press. Under his direction, the Aggie defense finished fourth nationally in scoring defense (13.1 ppg), fifth in total defense (265.5 ypg) and sixth in rushing defense (92.4 ypg).

Tuberville served as a member of the University of Miami staff for eight seasons from 1986-93, taking over as defensive coordinator in 1993. While serving on the staffs of Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Erickson at Miami, Tuberville was a defensive coach on teams which won three national championships, posted an 87-9 record and played in nine consecutive New Year’s Day bowls.

As defensive coordinator for the Hurricanes in 1993, Tuberville directed a Miami defense which was ranked No. 3 nationally in scoring defense (12.6 ppg) and No. 5 nationally in pass defense (91.15 ypg). Tuberville began his collegiate coaching career at Arkansas State in 1980, coaching various segments of the Indians’ defense over the next five seasons. During a five-year stay at Arkansas State, Tuberville coached defensive backs, nose guards and linebackers. During his final year at ASU, the Indians advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs.

He began his coaching career at Hermitage (Ark.) High School where he spent two years as an assistant and two as a head coach. After three straight four-win seasons, Tuberville guided HHS to a 7-3 mark in 1979 before moving to Arkansas State.

A 1976 graduate of Southern Arkansas University, Tuberville was a letterman at free safety and a two-year member of the golf team at SAU. He is a 1972 graduate of Harmony Grove High School in Camden, Ark. Tuberville is married to the former Suzanne Fette of Guilford, Ind. They are the parents of two sons, Thomas Tucker and Troy Allen.

2011 RED RAIDER FOOTBALL AGAINST NEW MEXICO Saturday’s game at New Mexico will mark the 43rd all-time meeting between the Red Raiders and the Lobos. The series first began in 1931 with a 32-6 Texas Tech victory in Lubbock.

Since then, the Red Raiders have compiled a commanding 34-62 lead the series, including wins in the last two meetings. Last season, Texas Tech left University Stadium in Albuquerque with a 52-17 win in front of an announced crowd of 25,734. Texas Tech will be making back-to-back trips to Albuquerque for the first time since making three consecutive visits between 194547.

AGAINST THE MOUNTAIN WEST CONFERENCE Texas Tech enters Saturday’s game at New Mexico with a 5-2 all-time record against the Mountain West Conference (established in 1999).

ON A ROLL Texas Tech was one of just two Big 12 schools that entered the 2011 season on a win streak and Tech’s season-opening win over Texas State kept that streak alive. Tech enters Saturday’s game at UNM riding a four-game win streak which is the second longest in the Big 12 Conference. Oklahoma leads the league with a six-game streak as the Sooners their final five games of the 2011 season and their season opener against Tulsa.

INJURY REPORT Justin Keown - Knee injury will keep him sidelined for the first few weeks of the season.

Tony Morales - underwent season-ending shoulder surgery during fall camp.

Leon Mackey - suffered a collapsed lung in the season opener against New Mexico and is out indefinitely.

Cody Davis - left the game against Texas State with a mild concussion but should return to action on Saturday at New Mexico.

DEFENSE SPARKS THE WIN Trailing 10-9 heading into halftime against Texas State, Texas Tech turned to its defense to turn things around in the second half. The defensive unit forced and recovered four fumbles in the second half and converted all four into touchdown drives.

The four fumble recoveries by the Red Raiders matched a school record that was set previously against TCU in 1993 and at Ohio State in 1990.

MOORE EXPLODES IN SEASON OPENER Junior wide receiver Darrin Moore, who lost his father Darrin Moore Sr. just days before fall training camp, honored his father’s memory in a big way in Tech’s season opener against Texas State. Moore hauled in a career and game-high 221 receiving yards and one touchdown to help the Red Raiders defeat the Bobcats 50-10. The 221 receiving yards were the most by a Red Raider in a season opener and the most since former AllAmerican Michael Crabtree caught nine passes for 195 yards at Texas in 2007. Additionally, Moore’s 221 receiving yards and 12 receptions put him at No. 10 on both the single-game yardage and single-game reception lists.

YOU MIGHT NEED A ROSTER Texas Tech used a young lineup against Texas State that featured eight true freshmen and three redshirt freshmen. Freshman receiver Bradley Marquez scored Tech’s first points of the season (10-yard TD catch) and was one of four true freshmen to see action on the Red Raider offense. Earning playing time tonight as true freshmen were: Blake Dees (started at MIKE linebacker), Bradley Marquez, DeAndre Washington, Jace Amaro, Pete Robertson, Alfredo Morales, Sam Eguavoen and Kindred Evans. Jackson Richards, Beau Carpenter and Shawn Corker earned playing time as redshirt freshmen. In all 16 new faces dotted the field in the opener, which included junior college transfers Happiness Osunde (DB), Marcus Kennard (WR) and Dennell Wesley (DL).

• Tech enters the UNM game with four true or redshirt freshmen listed as starters on the two-deep as well as six sophomores.

FRESHMAN DEES GRADES OUT ON DEFENSE When all the film study was wrapped up on Tech’s seasonopening win against Texas State, it was freshman linebacker Blake Dees that stood out as the top performer on defense.

Dees became the first true freshman to start at linebacker since Brock Stratton in 2003 and wasted no time taking advantage of the opportunity. Dees, a native of Spanish Fort, Ala., finished the night with seven tackles (second most behind DJ Johnson’s nine), a tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

• Saturday’s game against New Mexico will mark the 951st alltime contest in program history. In 87 years of football, the Red Raiders have compiled an overall record of 520-398-32 along with 53 winning seasons. Tech is currently riding a streak of 18 consecutive winning/non-losing seasons.

• Texas Tech was one of five Big 12 school’s with a bye week in the second week of the season. Joining Tech were Baylor, Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas A&M. Beginning with New Mexico, Texas Tech will play 11 consecutive weeks culminating in the regular-season finale at Cowboys Stadium against Baylor on Nov. 26.

• Texas Tech will be making its third appearance on the Versus Network (formerly OLN). Tech is 1-1 all-time on the network and is making its first appearance since a 35-28 win over Baylor at home in 2008. Tech’s only other appearance came in 2006 - a 12-3 setback at TCU. • In the opener against Texas State, the Red Raider defense did not allow a single play of 25-yards or longer. The last time a Red Raider defense accomplished that feat was on Nov. 3, 2007, in a 38-7 win at Baylor.

• Texas Tech committed just two penalties for a total of 30 yards in the opener against Texas State. That marked the lowest penalty total in a game for the Red Raiders since a 3528 win over Baylor on Nov. 29, 2008.

• Texas Tech Head Coach Tommy Tuberville enters Saturday’s game against New Mexico with a career non-conference record of 44-6 (.888 winning percentage) and is a perfect 5-0 in nonconference action as the head coach of the Red Raiders.

• Junior running back Eric Stephens picked up his second consecutive 100-plus yard rushing game in Tech’s season opener against Texas State as he picked up 126 yards. That total pushed Stephens over the 1,000 yard mark in what was the 27th game of his Texas Tech career.

• Stephens enters the New Mexico game with 3,259 career allpurpose yards and needs 233 to move into the Top 10 at Texas Tech. He will be looking to surpass Tyrone Thurman (1985-88) who currently ranks 10th on the career all-purpose yards list with 3,492. New England Patriots star Wes Welker holds the school record with 5,730.

The keys to the Texas Tech offense now belong to junior quarterback Seth Doege. Doege enters the 2011 season with one previous start under his belt as he got the nod in a 2009 home game against Kansas (threw for 159 yards [14-of-28] and one touchdown). Back-to-back knee injuries forced him to miss his junior and senior seasons in high school, so the 2011 season will mark his first full year of play since 2005. Freshman runningback/receiver Bradley Marquez has signed a professional baseball contract with the New York Mets.

Marquez will remain with the Tech football team in both the fall and spring and will play baseball for two months during the summer. The NCAA allows student-athletes to keep their amateur status in one sport despite being a professional in another. Marquez was drafted in the 16th round of the 2011 MLB Draft and received a signing bonus of $325,000.

LARGE AND SMALL

The largest player on this year’s team as well as the smallest can both be found on the same side of the ball. LaAdrian Waddle, the starting left tackle, stands at 6-6 and weighs in at 332 pounds making him the largest player on this year’s squad.

On the other side of the scale stands freshman receiver Jakeem Grant. Grant reported to training camp weighing 151 pounds and stands at 5-6. Grant is expected to contribute as a true freshman and also owns the distinction of being the fastest player on this year’s team.

16 CONSECUTIVE WINNING SEASONS

By winnings its final three games of the 2010 season, Texas Tech claimed a winning season for the 16th consecutive year.

The Red Raiders’ 35-20 win over Houston ensured Tech of a winning season and the 45-38 win over Northwestern gave the Red Raiders a final record of 8-5.

THIRD WINNINGEST PROGRAM OF CENTURY With 50 league wins since 2000, Texas Tech is the third winningest program in the Big 12 Conference this century. The Red Raiders trail only Oklahoma, Texas.

WE CAN TAKE THE HEAT Much of the southwest has been under an extreme drought and heatwave for most of the summer and Lubbock is no exception.

In fact, Lubbock was named the “Hottest City In America” by the online magazine The Daily Beast. At the time the article was released on July 20, Lubbock had experienced temperatures that were six degree warmer than average for the month of July. Lubbock recorded 43 consecutive days of temperatures over 100 degrees, including a high temperature of 112 in June.

BEST SIGNING CLASS IN SCHOOL HISTORY Texas Tech signed 26 student-athletes on national signing day and this year’s group has been ranked as the 18th best recruiting class in the nation by Scout.com and No. 19 by Rivals.com.

Prior to this signing day, the highest rated recruiting class in school history came back in 2006 when the Red Raiders earned a national No. 25 rating.

Along with the No. 18/19 national ranking, comes an even bigger honor as Scout.com named Tech’s running backs class as the No. 1 group in the country (also a first in school history).

Offensively, the Red Raiders also rank in the Top 15, according to Scout, in the wide receivers/tight ends group (No. 11) and offensive linemen (No. 14). Defensively, Rivals.com has the class of defensive ends ranked as the sixth best in the nation.

OFFSEASON STAFF CHANGES Coaching staff changes were the first order of business for Texas Tech in the spring. On Jan. 21, head coach Tommy Tuberville announced the hiring of Chad Glasgow as defensive coordinator and Otis Mounds as cornerbacks coach. Glasgow replaced James Willis who left the program on Dec. 26, 2010, while Mounds replaced Travaris Robinson who left the program following the Ticket City Bowl. Glasgow spent the previous 10 years as an assistant under Gary Patterson at TCU and helped the Horned Frogs rank first in the nation in total defense five times in the last decade. • Texas Tech enters the 2011 football season with its third different defensive coordinator in the last three years. Chad Glasgow replaced James Willis who left the program in December and has installed the 4-2-5 defense that was run with such success at TCU. Prior to James Willis, Ruffin McNeil served as the defensive coordinator at Tech before leaving for the head coaching job at East Carolina.

• Head coach Tommy Tuberville awarded scholarships to four players during training camp that were previous walkon’s: Sawyer Vest, Omar Ontiveros, Eugene Neboh and Jesse Smitherman.

• Freshman defensive lineman Delvon Simmons has been cleared to play immediately by the NCAA. Simmons is arguably one of the highest rated defensive players to come to Texas Tech as he was a five-star prospect out of high school by Scout.
