TEXAS TECH VS. NEW MEXICO • LUBBOCK, TEXAS • MARCH 7 Following four weekend tournaments to start the season, No. 19 Texas Tech hosts its first midweek doubleheader of the season when the New Mexico Logos come to Lubbock for a 1 p.m. contest Wednesday at Rocky Johnson Field.

The ranking is the highest in school history as prior to this season Tech had not been ranked in either poll since ending the 1999 season at No. 24 in the NFCA rankings.

RED RAIDERS ALREADY OFF TO RECORD SEASON After beginning the year with the best start in school history thanks to a 5-0 showing at the ASU Kajikawa Tournament, Tech added to its list of early-season accomplishments last Sunday. The Red Raiders won their 22nd-straight game, continuing the squad’s best start in school history.

ALLEN NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Texas Tech’s solid start to the season appears to be catching notice around the Big 12 as Cydney Allen was named this week’s Player of the Week by conference officials. Allen follows teammate Logan Hall who earned the award just a week ago. The junior from Taylorsville, Utah went 7-for-13 at the plate in the Red Raider Classic to go along with three home runs and nine RBIs. THE SERIES Texas Tech and New Mexico will be meeting for the first time since the 2009 season as the Lobos maintain at 16-14 all-time advantage over the Red Raiders in the series. Tech enters the doubleheader having lost four of its last five against New Mexico.

ON DECK The Red Raiders close their 25-game homestand this weekend in the Masker Rider Invitational as Tech takes on Evansville and Alcorn State over six games, beginning Friday at Rocky Johnson Field. Tech will then take a Spring Break trip to Clearwater, Fla. for the USF - The Game Tournament, March 17-20.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country.

In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). Turn back east (right) and Rocky Johnson Field will be on the right side.

A LOOK AT NEW MEXICO The Lobos come to Lubbock after being swept at home in a three game series last weekend against No. 6 Washington. New Mexico arrives in Lubbock 6-6 on the year with wins over Utah Valley and Northern Colorado and a three-sweep at the hands of Baylor. Jessica Garcia leads the Lobos at the plate with a .447 average to go along with three home runs and seven RBIs, while Kaela DeBroeck has seen the most time in the circle, compiling a 3-3 record and 3.74 ERA. RED RAIDERS AMONG THE FINAL UNBEATEN Texas Tech enters the midweek series as one of the few unbeaten teams left in the country. According to Ultimate College Softball, only five teams (Florida, Michigan, South Carolina-Upstate, Texas Tech, and Washington) remain undefeated through games Monday night.

POWERFUL OFFENSE LEADS THE BIG 12 Texas Tech enters this weekend with the top offense in the Big 12 as the Red Raiders have a league-leading .412 average to go along with 209 runs scored and 182 RBIs. The next-highest average in the conference is .366 from Texas.

GAMES ENDING EARLY The Red Raiders have ended eight of their last nine games via run rule within the past week. Tech has held at least an eight-run lead after five innings 14 times this season, four games shy of the school record of 18 set in 1997.

PITCHING STAFF SETS SCHOOL RECORDS The Texas Tech pitching staff set several school records during the Red Raider Classic, including most shutouts in a row (5), consecutive hitless innings (11.2), and consecutive shutout innings (27.1). Brittany Talley and Ashley Brokeshoulder both share the team-high in wins with seven.

HALL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK After hitting .583 during the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic, junior infielder Logan Hall was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on March 1. In addition to her 7-for-12 weekend at the plate, Hall added three home runs, two of which were grand slams, and 16 total RBIs to help keep Tech undefeated. www.texastech.com

TECH A STAPLE ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Five Red Raiders along were named to the all-tournament team of the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic while Logan Hall was honored as the tournament’s Top Hitter and Brittany Talley was selected as the Top Pitcher. Cydney Allen, Emily Bledsoe, Kelsey Dennis, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson were all honored on the all-tournament team.

KENNEY PRODUCING IN LEADOFF SPOT Since moving to the leadoff spot to start the year, Mike Kenney has continued to show she is one of the top power hitters in the Big 12 as the sophomore has been one of the main catalysts for the Tech offense this year with her .553 on-base percentage and .449 batting average. She leads the Big 12 with 11 doubles, three more than her total from the entire 2010 season.

DREWRY NEARING CAREER RBI NUMBERS After only 22 games, Stephanie Drewry is close to matching her RBI total from the previous two seasons combined. The junior currently has 15 RBIs this year, five more than her 2010 total and eight more from her freshman season in 2009.

TECH STAYS ON PITCHING BY COMMITTEE PATH Entering the year, Shanon Hays said that Tech would rely on pitching by committee, and after 16 games, the second-year head coach has stayed true to his word. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Brittany Talley lead Tech with seven wins each, while Kelsey Dennis has added five of her own. Karli Merlich picked up her first win of the year against St. John’s and Kermitria Ward has served as Tech’s primary closer with two wins and a save.

AVERAGES SOURING OVER .400 Texas Tech currently has five regular position players with a batting average at .400 or higher. Logan Hall leads all players with a .516 average followed by Cydney Allen, Stephanie Drewry, Mikey Kenney, and Raven Richardson, who all are over the .400 mark so far.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech honored the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders faced St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that ran Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

HALL BOOSTS MIDDLE OF THE ORDER To say Logan Hall had a successful Texas Tech Invitational might be an understatement. The junior infielder hit .611 at the plate (11-for-18) with 11 RBIs, three of which came off a three-run home run against Utah Valley in the weekend finale. Hall leads Tech with 40 RBIs on the year and has recorded a .516 average, the highest on the team.

SPEAKING OF HALL...

Logan Hall began the Texas Tech Invitational with a memorable performance against Utah Valley in the early game on Friday. The junior smashed two triples in the game, tying Denise Jackson for the school record that had not been matched since the 1997 season. Jackson hit two triples against New Mexico that year on Feb. 7.

HOME RUN WATCH BEGINS FOR KENNEY Mikey Kenney’s two home run day to close the Texas Tech Invitational moved the sophomore into a tie for fourth on the school’s career homer chart. She is now tied with Jennifer Bowers (2005-08) with 17 career dingers and is three from tying Jennifer Corking (2005-08) for third all-time. After matching the single-season record with 15 home runs as a freshman, it’s not a stretch to think Kenney could some day match Kim Martinez’ school record of 27.

RED RAIDERS CONTINUE LONG HOMESTAND The Red Raiders are currently in the middle of a 25game homestand that began with the Texas Tech Invitational on Feb. 18. Tech will play at home for nearly a month, hosting two more separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before heading to South Florida for the USF - The Game Tournament. The homestand is the longest in school history.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen has already proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College.

The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

FOX NOT ONLY FAMILY MEMBER IN TOP 25 Texas Tech assistant coach Kristy Fox is not the only member of the Fox family ranked in the top 25. Fox’s younger sister, Kellie Fox, is the starting shortstop for 10th-ranked UCLA as only a freshman.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENT Emily Bledsoe has had many significant hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-frombehind victory. The junior described the hit as a “top five moment” during Monday’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run.

After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average for the weekend.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays.

The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend.

KENNEY MOVES TO LEADOFF SPOT After spending most of the 2010 season in the middle of the Tech lineup, Mikey Kenney moved to the leadoff spot to start this season. Known as one of Tech’s top power hitters, Kenney has recorded a .389 average with two home runs and 12 RBIs. BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAIN To say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Seven of the conference’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this week with one more (Baylor) also receiving votes.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATE The Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay dividends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The conference currently has seven schools ranked among the top 25 nationally with another receiving votes in Baylor.

2011 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL ALLEN TO FACE FORMER SCHOOL Junior catcher Cydney Allen might see a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s seasonopener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010.

HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATE Logan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajikawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection.

EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM REGIONAL TEAM With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNS Tech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bledsoe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup.

NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors.

RED RAIDERS TURN TO NEW ARMS Following the graduation of former standout pitcher Ashly Jacobs, Tech will look at several new faces in the circle, including junior college transfer Kelsey Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an outfielder and will occasionally pinch run.

HOME SWEET HOME The Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history.

TECH RECEIVES VOTES IN PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech enters the 2011 season earning votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls as the Red Raiders picked up four votes in each poll.

HEAD COACH SHANON HAYS • 2nd Season • Lubbock Christian ‘91 No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise.

The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional.

Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earnedrun average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history.

Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a firstyear head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season.

appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years.

Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season.

In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season.

Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.

In each coaching stop, Hays left as the winningest head coach in school history according to winning percentage. He ended his collegiate basketball tenure with a 107-42 record as a head coach.
