The Red Raiders appeared at No. 21 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll and No. 24 in the NFCA/USA Today rankings. Tech’s selection in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll is the highest ranking in school history. Tech’s last appearance in the top 25 came at No. 24 in the NFCA poll at the conclusion of the 1999 season.

TECH TOPS TWO RANKED TEAMS IN ARIZONA Heading into the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic, Tech head coach Shanon Hays really didn’t know what to expect from his young squad. The Red Raiders ended the week with two wins over ranked opponents in No. 16 BYU and No. 12 Cal en route to a perfect 5-0 record, the only school among the 27 participating to do so. Tech also topped Bradley, Indiana, and Appalachian State last weekend on the way to its best start in school history.

UP NEXT Texas Tech continues its homestand next weekend with the start of the Jannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders will face St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State during the three-day event that runs Feb. 25-27.

Texas Tech players and head coach Shanon Hays will be made available to the media outside the home dugout following a brief cooling off period. The Texas Tech lockerroom is will remain closed.

ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field opened in 2001, giving Texas Tech one of the newest softball facilities in the country.

In the 10 years since its opening, the complex has gone through several changes, including the addition of the team facility down the left field line which opened in 2010, making “The Rock” one of the finest facilities in the country.

DIRECTIONS TO ROCKY JOHNSON FIELD Rocky Johnson Field is located on 10th Street near University Medical Center (UMC). The softball complex is adjacent to the McLeod Tennis Center and can be best reached via Texas Tech Parkway.

FROM THE AIRPORT: Take I-27 South from Regis Street and exit west on the Marsha Sharp Freeway. Take the Texas Tech Parkway exit and turn north (right) for a quarter of a mile until you reach the first stop light (10th Street). RED RAIDERS AGAINST ALL OPPONENTS Texas Tech will be facing both Bryant and Utah Valley for the first time in school history.

TECH IN HOME OPENERS The Red Raiders are 9-6 all-time in home openers since softball was resurrected as an intercollegiate sport in 1996. Tech has not hosted a home game earlier than Feb. 18 since facing UTEP on the same date in 2004.

RED RAIDERS BEGIN LONG HOMESTAND The Texas Tech Invitational is the beginning of a long 25-game homestand for the Red Raiders. Tech will play at home for nearly a month, hosting three more separate tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before heading to South Florida for the USF - The Game Tournament. The homestand is the longest in school history.

TECH OFF TO BEST START IN SCHOOL HISTORY The Red Raiders 4-1 win over Indiana moved Tech to 4-0 on the season, its best start in school history. The school’s most successful start previously was its 3-0 opening in 1998. Tech extended its winning streak on Sunday with a win over Appalachian State.

ALLEN MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT After only one weekend in a Red Raider uniform, Cydney Allen has already proved why she was one of the most highly sought-after recruits in the nation coming out of Salt Lake Community College.

The junior catcher had a hit in each of Tech’s game at the Kajikawa Classic and had at least two hits in four of five games. Allen finished with a .556 average off a team-high 10 hits, including a two-run home run against Indiana as part of her five RBIs on the week.

BLEDSOE DELIVERS TOP-FIVE MOMENT Emily Bledsoe has had many significant hits in her Texas Tech career, but few may have been bigger than her two-run walkoff home run against Appalachian State that sent Tech to a 10-9 come-frombehind victory. The junior described the hit as a “top five moment” during Monday’s media session.

TALLEY TALLIES UP THE RESULTS For being only a freshman, Brittany Talley had a lot of responsibility on her left arm in Arizona. The Little Elm, Texas native got the start against both No. www.texastech.com

16 BYU and No. 12 Cal, picking up the win against the Golden Bears. Talley was an out away from a complete game win over BYU before the Cougars responded with a game-tying two-run home run.

After going 5.1 innings against Cal, Talley returned to the circle later in the night to close the Indiana game, going the final 2.2 innings to earn the save.

DON’T FORGET ABOUT DREWRY With all the individual successes of the Kajikawa Classic, the play of Stephanie Drewry should not be forgotten. The junior outfielder went 2-for-3 at the plate against Appalachian State and drove in a career-high five RBIs while posting a .467 average for the weekend.

HAMADA RELIABLE IN NO. 9 SLOT Ashley Hamada proved much more than the average No. 9-hole hitter, recording a .500 average last weekend. Only Cydney Allen had a higher average for Tech as Hamada started every game in right field.

KERM PROVING TO BE SOLID RELIEVER Freshman Kermitria Ward proved to be a reliable arm out of the bullpen in Arizona, picking up the win against BYU before earning the save against Cal. The Texas 4A Player of the Year as a high school senior, Ward recorded a 2.74 ERA in 7.2 innings during her collegiate debut.

HAYS CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL BIRTHDAY Tech’s wins over No. 12 Cal and Indiana last Saturday was no ordinary day at the park for head coach Shanon Hays. The second-year coach was celebrating his birthday and received a nice gift in Tech’s second victory over a ranked opponent of the weekend.

BROKE PULLS TECH OUT OF JAMS Whenever Texas Tech appears to be in a jam, the likely bet is Ashley Brokeshoulder may be heading to the circle soon. The sophomore southpaw earned two wins in only 3.1 innings while allowing no runs on two hits in Arizona.

BIG 12 PROVES TOUGH ONCE AGAIN To say the Big 12 schedule will be a cake-walk for any team would be an exaggeration. Seven of the conference’s 10 schools appeared in one of the two major top 25 polls this week with one more (Baylor) also receiving votes.

JEANNINE MCHANEY MEMORIAL CLASSIC Texas Tech will honor the university’s long-considered founder of women’s athletics next weekend with the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic. The Red Raiders will face St. John’s, Northern Illinois, and Wichita State in the three-day event that runs Feb. 25-27 at Rocky Johnson Field. McHaney was the first athletics director when the women’s athletics department was formed in 1975 and remained a top member of the athletics department for the next two decades. She passed away in 1994.

BYU GAME MARKS A FIRST FOR TECH Prior to last weekend, Texas Tech had never gone to extra innings in its season opener. The Red Raiders were an out away from ending the game in the seventh, but instead won, 7-5, in nine innings.

EARLY TEST SHOULD HELP LATE The Red Raiders trip to Arizona should pay dividends when Big 12 play begins as Tech faced two of the top teams in the nation in BYU and Cal. The conference currently has seven schools ranked among the top 25 nationally with another receiving votes.

ALLEN TO FACE FORMER SCHOOL Junior catcher Cydney Allen might see a few familiar faces in the opposite dugout during Tech’s seasonopener against BYU. Allen appeared in 11 games for the Cougars as a freshman in 2009 before transferring to Salt Lake Community College in 2010.

HALL RETURNS TO HOME STATE Logan Hall returned to her home state for the Kajikawa Classic. Hall, a native of Tucson, Ariz., played one season at Pima Community College before transferring to Tech for the 2010 season where she was an All-Big 12 second team selection.

EIGHT STARTERS RETURN FROM REGIONAL TEAM With eight starters returning in the field from the 2010 squad that advanced to the NCAA Stanford Regional, the Red Raiders should have a wealth of experience to rely on when Big 12 play begins. Tech lost Leah Legler, Danielle Matthews, and pitcher Ashly Jacobs from last season’s 38-18 team.

ALL-BIG 12 TRIO RETURNS Tech’s trio of All-Big 12 second team selections from a year ago in Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney all return to the diamond this spring. Bledsoe and Hall will both be juniors, while Kenney will be entering only her sophomore season. The trio combined for 31 home runs and 122 RBI last season, giving Tech three reliable bats in the lineup.

NO SENIORS, NO PROBLEM The Red Raiders will have one noticeable difference in their roster than every other school in the Big 12 - Tech has no seniors on its 2011 roster. Instead, second-year head coach Shanon Hays will rely on an experienced group of 11 juniors.

Dennis and freshmen Brittany Talley and Kermitria Ward. Ashley Brokeshoulder and Karli Merlich both return to the circle as well, giving Tech five pitchers for the season. Ward will also split time as an outfielder and will occasionally pinch run.

HOME SWEET HOME The Red Raiders will play 35 of their 54 games at Rocky Johnson Field this season, beginning with the Texas Tech Invitational, Feb. 18-20. Tech will host four-straight weekends of round robin tournaments and a midweek doubleheader against New Mexico before completing non-conference play in Florida for the UCF Tournament. The Red Raiders begin Big 12 play with their first five conference games at home as Missouri, Oklahoma, and Baylor all travel to Lubbock. Tech will also have home series against Kansas and in-state rival Texas. Tech’s 35 home games is the most in school history.

TECH RECEIVES VOTES IN PRESEASON POLL Texas Tech enters the 2011 season earning votes in both the USA Today/NFCA and ESPN.com/USA Softball polls as the Red Raiders picked up four votes in each poll.

HAYS ADDS SIX NEWCOMERS Even with most of his roster from a year ago back, Tech head coach Shanon Hays added seven newcomers this spring, most noteably junior college transfers Cydney Allen and Kelsey Dennis and freshman Kermitria Ward. Freshmen Brittany Talley and Taylor Powell along with sophomore transfer Sandy James will add to the list of newcomers.

FROM ACROSS THE NATION Nearly half of Texas Tech’s 21 players are originally from a state other than Texas as only 11 players hail from the Lone Star State. All together eight states are represented on this year’s roster, including Alabama Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, and Washington.

2010 SEASON IN REVIEW u Texas Tech returned to a NCAA Regional last season for the first time in 10 seasons, eventually falling to Hawaii in the championship game of the regional, held on the Stanford campus in Palo Alto, Calif. HEAD COACH SHANON HAYS • 2nd Season • Lubbock Christian ‘91 No stranger to building programs, Shanon Hays took over as head coach of the Texas Tech softball team in 2010 and immediately led the Red Raiders back to the NCAA postseason in only his first season, laying the groundwork for a program on the rise.

The fifth head coach since the resurrection of the program in 1996, Hays helped guide the Red Raiders to a 23-win improvement last year from the 2009 season, while eventually advancing all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Stanford Regional.

Under Hays, all facets of the game improved as the Tech hitters snapped the school record for runs, slugging percentage, and home runs in a season, while the pitching staff boasted its lowest earnedrun average since 2001 and the Tech defense committed its fewest errors in school history.

Most importantly, Tech’s win-loss record received the biggest improvement under Hays, whose 38-18 record in his first season is the best finish for a firstyear head coach in program history. Three Tech players - Emily Bledsoe, Logan Hall, and Mikey Kenney, were named to the All-Big 12 second team following the regular season.

appointment as the program’s first head softball coach in 2006, Hays worked for a full academic year in preparation for LCU’s first season in 2008.

The Lady Chaps did not disappoint in their inaugural season, compiling a 60-9 record and claiming the NAIA National Championship, earning Hays NAIA National Coach of the Year honors. Hays wrapped his two-year tenure at LCU with a 114-16 overall record after advancing to the national championship again in 2009. Known as a top-flight recruiter and motivator, Hays was named the Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year both seasons and produced five National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) and NAIA first team All-Americans during his tenure.

Hays turned to softball after a successful career as a basketball coach that included two seasons on the Texas Tech bench as an assistant coach from 19992001 under James Dickey. He is the first person at Texas Tech to coach two completely different sports (one men’s and now one women’s).

Prior to accepting the softball position at LCU, Hays was the associate head men’s basketball coach at the University of Houston in 2005-06. Working under head coach Tom Penders, Hays found his knack as a recruiter, helping sign one of the nation’s top 15 recruiting classes in only his first season where the Cougars won 18 games and advanced to a national tournament for the first time in three years.

Hays began playing fastpitch softball as a youth, along with baseball and basketball, because his father, the legendary Texas Tech and LCU baseball coach Larry Hays, also played fastpitch softball. Hays, the elder, whose 1,509 wins were good enough for fourth on the all-time collegiate baseball list, retired as Tech’s all-time winningest coach prior to the 2009 season.

In a rare twist, Larry Hays succeeded his son at LCU for one season prior to Daren Hays, Shanon’s brother and former Tech assistant baseball coach and director of operations, accepted the position to lead the Lady Chaps beginning with the 2011 season.

Shanon Hays began and ended his college career at LCU, graduating with his degree in Education in 1991 after also matriculating at Texas Tech and competing from 1988 - 1990 for his father on the Red Raiders’ baseball team. He competed for LCU prior to that in both baseball and on the basketball teams.

He graduated from Lubbock Monterey High School in 1986 and makes his home in Lubbock with his wife, Tina, his two sons, Hunter, Heath, and his daughter, Hampton.

In each coaching stop, Hays left as the winningest head coach in school history according to winning percentage. He ended his collegiate basketball tenure with a 107-42 record as a head coach.
