SATURDAY STORYLINES
(National Ranking/Conference Ranking)
RED RAIDERS LOOK TO REMAIN PERFECT Fresh off a 38-3 victory over UTEP this past Saturday, Texas Tech takes a 2-0 record on the road for the first time this season as the Red Raiders head to the desert to face Arizona in a battle of two former Border Conference members. n The Red Raiders are looking for a sweep of their non-conference slate against Arizona, which would give Wells three-consecutive wins to open his Texas Tech tenure. With a win, Wells would be only the fourth head coach in school history to score victories in each of his first three games, joining Kliff Kingsbury (2013), Mike Leach (2000) and Dell Morgan (1941). n

ALL ABOUT GETTING OFF THE FIELD Soon after his hire last November, Matt Wells stressed the Red Raiders wouldn’t be known only for their offense anymore. Through the first two weeks of the season, the Red Raiders have definitely proved that to be true, limiting Montana State and UTEP to only 13 combined points, the fewest allowed by Texas Tech through the opening two games since 1998. n Texas Tech’s success defensively has partly stemmed from its ability to get off the field, especially in quick fashion. Opponents have only converted 4-of-31 third-down attempts this season (13 percent), which ranks second nationally. Additionally, over the 27 drives Tech has faced this year, the Red Raiders have forced an impressive 15 3-and-outs (55.6 percent). n

BROOKS ALREADY OFF TO STRONG START

Part of Texas Tech’s success defensively this season has been the result of the play of senior linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who has totaled 11 tackles in each of the Red Raiders’ two victories this season. n Brooks currently ranks 11th nationally and second in the Big 12 for tackles per game. He has twice as many tackles already this year as any other Red Raider this year for a defense that ranks third in the FBS for points allowed per game (6.5) and ninth in total yards surrendered per game (210.0). Brooks is looking to lead the Red Raiders in tackles for the third time in his illustrious career. n
HONORING DAVE PARKS
Texas Tech lost one of its all-time greats when College Football Hall of Famer and Ring of Honor member Dave Parks passed away Aug. 8 at the age of 77. Tech will wear a special helmet decal throughout the 2019 football season in order to honor the former two-way player under head coach JT King (1961-63). A native of Abilene, Parks was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2008, the Texas Sports Hall of Fame in 2011 and was a charter member of the Texas Tech Ring of Honor in 2012.
WE, US & OUR PROGRAM Since his hire last November, Matt Wells has emphasized that the Red Raider football program will be a “We, Us and Our Program.” “This is a We, Us and Our Program. I’ve said it from day one it’s not about me, it’s not about the starting linebacker, running back or one coordinator or one fan. It’s the power of what we can do together. We’re not an offensive unit. We’re not a defensive unit. We’re a team. We’re Red Raiders. It’s the culture we are creating in this program. We need the passion of Red Raider Nation and make Jones AT&T Stadium the toughest place to play in the Big 12 Conference. We have to do it together.” - Matt Wells #WreckEm
