TEXAS TECH WELCOMES NO. 1 TEXAS TO TOWN SATURDAY

Texas Tech will host the No. 1 team in the country for the first time since 2007 Saturday afternoon when the Red Raiders welcome in-state rival Texas to the United Spirit Arena for a 1 p.m. first serve. The Red Raiders enter the match 9-19 on the season and 2-10 in Big 12 play. Texas, meanwhile, will be looking to extend its 14-match winning streak as the Longhorns are 18-2 this season and a perfect 11-0 in league action.

AROUND THE NET • Texas Tech will be hosting the top-ranked team in the country Saturday for the first time since Sept. 15, 2007, when No.

1 Nebraska traveled to Lubbock and defeated the Red Raiders in straight sets.

• The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a 25-match losing streak to the Longhorns, who have won every match in the series since 2001. Texas Tech’s last win over its in-state rival came on Nov. 1, 2000, when the Red Raiders completed the season sweep of the Longhorns with a 3-0 victory in Lubbock.

• The Texas match begins the final stretch of the regular season for the Red Raiders, who will face three of the Big 12’s top four teams during the last four matches. In addition to facing Texas on Saturday, Tech will also host Oklahoma next Wednesday before traveling to No. 23 Kansas on Nov. 23. The Red Raiders close the season on Nov. 30 at home against TCU. • The Red Raiders are coming off a disappointing 3-0 sweep at the hands of Baylor Wednesday night in Waco where Texas Tech was looking for consecutive Big 12 victories for the first time since 2005.

• Texas Tech had previously topped Kansas State, 3-1, on Nov. 6 before heading to Baylor. The K-State victory marked the second-straight year that the Red Raiders had defeated the Wildcats in Lubbock. Tech had not previously recorded wins in consecutive seasons over a Big 12 foe since beating both Kansas and Texas A&M at least once during the 2005-06 seasons.

• Texas Tech’s three-match run of reaching double digits in blocks came to an end against Baylor as the Red Raiders totaled just four against the Bears. Tech started the streak with a season-high 13.5 blocks at Iowa State on Oct. 30 and then followed up with 11.0 and 10.0 blocks against West Virginia and Kansas State.

• Texas Tech has found success behind the service line as of late, totaling 36 aces in the last six matches combined, including a season-high 11 at Iowa State. Tech’s 11 aces against the Cyclones marked its most since collegiate volleyball turned to 25-point sets in 2008 and its most since recording 16 on Nov. 10, 2004, at Oklahoma.

• Saturday’s match will mark the third time in Don Flora’s tenure where the Red Raiders have played a team ranked in the top-five of the AVCA rankings. Texas Tech is previously 0-2 in those matches.

All practices are open to the media and the public. Practices normally begin around 1 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena and end around 3:30 p.m. during the week.

Head coach Don Flora can be reached best during the morning hours prior to the start of practice. Flora’s office is housed in the north end of the United Spirit Arena (ground level). To setup an interview, please contact Matt Dowdy in the Athletics Communications office. Flora will also take part in a weekly press conference every Monday in the Masked Rider Room in the south end of Jones AT&T Stadium.

PLAYER INTERVIEWS Players and coaches are available for interviews every day prior to the start of practice. Practice times vary from week to week, so media members wishing to attend should contact Matt Dowdy in the Athletics Communications office to get a weekly schedule.

PLAYER TO WATCH: EMILY WRIGHT Emily Wright was Texas Tech’s biggest bright spot from its loss to Baylor as the sophomore totaled 13 digs off the bench, her most ever in a Big 12 match. Wright, who is also a threat serving, finished just one dig off her career high.

2013 Texas Tech Volleyball TEXAS TECH AND TEXAS - THE SERIES

Saturday’s contest will mark the 87th overall meeting between Texas Tech and its in-state rival Texas. It is the longest running series for the Red Raiders, who have faced Texas in each season since 1975. Texas has historically dominated the series with a 75-9-2 all-time advantage that includes a 33-2 record in matches played in Lubbock. The Longhorns have won each of the last 25 matches against the Red Raiders, including a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 9 this year in Austin. Tech will be looking for its first win over Texas since Nov. 1, 2000, when the Red Raiders completed the season sweep of the Longhorns with a 3-0 victory in Lubbock.

BRUMMITT SNAPS SINGLE-SEASON DIGS RECORD - AGAIN

For the second-straight year, Rachel Brummitt etched her named in the Texas Tech record book as she snapped her own single-season school digs record on Nov. 6 against Kansas State. The junior libero recorded 21 digs against the Wildcats, moving her season total to 520 at the time which is 10 more than her record-breaking mark from the 2012 campaign. Brummitt, who now owns the highest two dig total in single-season history, currently ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with a 5.12 digs per set average that is nearly a full dig more than her 2012 average. The Plano, Texas native has finished with 20 or more digs 14 times already this year, including a season-high 29 on Sept. 7 against Eastern Washington. She has been in double digits for digs in all but one of Tech’s matches this season as well.

BRUMMITT SURPASSES THE 1,000 CAREER DIGS MARK

Rachel Brummitt’s legacy from this season will not just be felt in the Texas Tech single-season record book, though, after she surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark on Nov. 2 at West Virginia. With her 12 digs this past Wednesday at Baylor, Brummitt increased her career total to 1,042 entering this weekend. She is the only Red Raider all-time to reach the 1,000 career digs mark in just two seasons. Brummitt could potentially approach the career top-10 for digs this season as she trails Ginger Carter (1991-94) by just 50 digs with four matches still remaining. Lisa Hilgers is the Texas Tech all-time leader in digs as she totaled 1,583 over her four seasons from 1995-98.

SHE CAN SERVE, TOO

Not only is Rachel Brummitt a presence on the back row but she has also delivered this year at the service line. The junior libero has totaled a team-high 30 aces this year, the most for a Red Raider since Caroline Witte also recorded 30 during the 2008 season. Brummitt enters this weekend ranked sixth in the Big 12 Conference with a 0.29 aces per set average. She is tied in the league rankings with teammate Breeann David, who has connected on 20 aces, two of which that came this past Wednesday at Baylor, while playing in just 70 sets this year. If Brummitt was to record at least one more ace over Texas Tech’s final four matches, it would mark the most for a Red Raider since Jenn Harrell and Emily Ziegler recorded 31 and 52 aces each during the 2006 season.

PIPER NOTCHES FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE AGAINST K-STATE

Aubree Piper added another accomplishment to her successful career as a Red Raider on Nov. 6 when the lone senior on the Texas Tech roster recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs against Kansas State. It was the first double-double for a Red Raider middle blocker since current director of operations Amy Gandy went for 10 kills and 13 digs on Sept. 22, 2007, at Kansas. Piper, who is Tech’s leader with 270 kill on the season, had not previously reached double digits for digs throughout her career, breaking her previous mark of seven from earlier this season against Nevada.

RED RAIDERS KNOCK OFF K-STATE FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR

Led by 23 kills and 11 digs from Jenna Allen, Texas Tech knocked off Kansas State on Nov. 6 for the second-straight year at the United Spirit Arena. Rachel Brummitt also led a group of six Red Raiders to reach double figures for digs as she totaled 21 en route to breaking her own Tech single-season school record from a year ago. The victory marked the first time Tech had defeated K-State in consecutive seasons since picking up four wins from 1998-01. The Red Raiders had also not earned victories in back-to-back years over a Big 12 foe since defeating both Texas A&M and Kansas at least once in both the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Texas Tech will be looking to continue its impressive display as of late behind the service line as the Red Raiders have totaled 36 aces over the last six matches, 11 of which that came at Iowa State. Nicole Hragyil led the Red Raiders with a career-high five aces against the Cyclones, the most for a Red Raiders since Emily Ruetter also recorded five at Central Arkansas last year.

Rachel Brummitt, who leads all Red Raiders with 30 aces this season, and Breeann David are both currently tied for sixth in the Big 12 entering this weekend with a 0.29 service aces per set average. Tech’s 11 aces against Iowa State marked its most in a Big 12 match since collegiate volleyball moved to 25-point sets. It was also the most for a Red Raider in any match since recording 16 on Nov. 10, 2004, at Oklahoma. The Red Raiders enter this week ranked third in the Big 12 with a 1.21 aces per set average.

ALLEN BECOMES TEXAS TECH’S OFFENSIVE LEADER IN BIG 12 PLAY

Since returning from a preseason injury on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma, Jenna Allen has shown why Don Flora was excited for the South Carolina transfer to debut in scarlet and black. In her 12 matches so far this season, Allen has totaled 144 kills, averaging a team-best 3.35 per set during that span. She has led the Red Raiders in kills for six of 12 matches, including a career-high 24 in Texas Tech’s 3-2 victory at TCU. The Lewisville, Texas product began her Tech career by connecting on 21 kills against the Sooners, which marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also totaled 21 kills in 2001 against Colorado. Her impressive debut has also focused on the defensive end as well with five double-double performances thanks in part to 104 digs at a 2.42 per set rate. She enters this weekend ranked seventh in the Big 12 in kills per set for Big 12 matches only and sixth for points per set.

RED RAIDERS ONE OF TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY

In the midst of an injury-filled season, one thing has remained constant for the Red Raiders - their ability to dig. Led by standout libero Rachel Brummitt, Texas Tech entered this week ranked 55th in the country and third in the Big 12 Conference with a 16.14 digs per set average. Brummitt has been the driving force behind Tech’s defensive success as the junior is averaging 5.12 digs per set, an average that ranks 22nd nationally.. Five different Red Raiders have posted double-doubles so far this season, led by Emily Ruetter’s 10 which is three more than her total from a year ago. DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE

For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled 222 kills in 22 matches this season where she has averaged 3.17 per set, the seventh-highest total currently in the Big 12.

The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David, who has missed five matches due to injury and has been limited for parts of Big 12 play, is also sixth in the Big 12 for points per set (3.73) and ninth for aces per set with 0.26 per frame.

National television or a hostile road environment could not halt an impressive performance for freshman setter Marguerite Grubb at Iowa State where she made her first career start. Grubb, who had previously been inserted in various situations this year, dished out 38 assists while adding 10 digs for her first career double-double. She is the second Red Raider to record a double-double in her first career start this season, joining Jenna Allen, who did so on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma. Grubb is now one of three Tech freshmen who have started a match this year, joining Katie Daffer and Courtney Ensch.

If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 276 kills at a 2.65 per set rate. With four matches still remaining in the season, Piper has already surpassed her career high in kills as she topped the 156 from her 2012 junior year just a few weeks ago. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 65 blocks while adding 15 service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a team-high .273 attacking percentage that has set her on pace to enter the Tech career record book at the end of the season with a .253 percentage over four seasons.

O’CANADA - SEASON TWO

For as much balance as Texas Tech has shown this year offensively, much of the credit belongs to Emily Ruetter. Tech’s first Canadian volleyball athlete since 2007 heads into this week ranked third in the Big 12 and 72nd nationally with a 10.31 assists per set average that is a full assist more than the average from her 2012 freshman season. Ruetter has totaled 1,000 assists through 28 of 32 regular season matches, putting her on pace to potentially become just the fifth Red Raider setter to record more than 1,200 assists. No Tech setter has reached the mark since Laura Grote in 2003 when she dished out 1,276 assists. Ruetter, who has also recorded 12 service aces and 28 blocks, is Tech’s first Canadian-born player since current director of volleyball operations Amy Gandy (2004-07).

WRIGHT STEPS UP IN TRIP TO INCARNATE WORD, TEXAS STATE

Faced with a depleted bench, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora turned to sophomore Emily Wright to fill a void on the outside as the usual defensive specialist turned into a six-rotation player in both matches against Incarnate Word and Texas State. The effort did not go unnoticed, either, as Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs Monday against the Cardinals before coming back the next night to post a career-high 14 digs against Texas State. The Cypress, Texas native returned to being a full-time defensive specialist last week at Oklahoma.

2013 Texas Tech Volleyball MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Rachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two juniors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first alltournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKEND

Texas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 9-18 on the year, improving Flora’s overall record to 307-112 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech.

Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks tied for fifth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma). All four coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAH

Texas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

PIPER RETURNS AS TEXAS TECH’S LONE SENIOR

When Aubree Piper looks walks across the court later this season on Senior Night, she will be the only player on Tech’s 19-person roster to receive flowers and framed jersey. The four-year senior, who has started in 52 matches the past three seasons, will be Tech’s leader both on the court and in the locker room for a program that despite returning 12 letterwinners also boasts seven newcomers. Piper enters her senior season with 440 career kills to go along with 174 total blocks and a .242 career hitting percentage. She ended 2012 with a .312 hitting percentage, which ranked ninth in school history for a single season. The Amarillo, Texas native is Tech’s most experienced returner, having played in 72 career matches despite battling various injuries throughout her career.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?

After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would already place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season as well.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMER

Not shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation player normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

Texas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

RED RAIDERS TO MAKE FIRST-EVER APPEARANCE ON ESPN

The Texas Tech volleyball program will face Iowa State in front of a national television audience on Oct. 30 as the Red Raiders and Cyclones were picked prior to the season to appear on ESPNU as part of the Big 12 Conference’s television schedule for the 2013 season. The match is part of a Big 12 double-header on the network as Baylor and Kansas will face off at 6 p.m. CT in Lawrence before the Red Raiders and Cyclones open with an 8 p.m. first serve later in the evening at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. This will be Tech’s first ever appearance on an ESPN network (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU). The Red Raiders are 20-17 all-time against the Cyclones and 10-8 when playing in Ames.

Redshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCES

The Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.

RED RAIDERS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL

Texas Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll that is voted on annually by the conference coaches. It was the highest preseason nod for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech was selected to finish sixth in what was then an 11-team league. The Red Raiders 19 points to finish tied for seventh with TCU while West Virginia rounded out the poll in ninth place. AUSTIN, Texas - Texas Tech probably wished it played to just 15 points Wednesday night. Unfortunately for the Red Raiders, sets go to 25 points.

Tech gained early leads in both the first two frames before No. 3 Texas rallied to put Tech in a deficit it would not overcome in a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-17, 25-16) of the Red Raiders at Gregory Gym. “It was great to see us play with joy and passion,” Tech head coach Don Flora said. “We give Texas a lot of credit for winning some big points, and we learned a lot about how to stay focused from point-to-point tonight. Texas is obviously very talented but I liked how we battled.”

Tech (7-12; 0-4) led 13-7 in the opening frame and then 12-11 in the second but could not put away the Longhorns (11-2; 4-0) in either frame as Texas responded with 6-1 and 9-3 runs to send the Red Raiders into the intermission with a 2-0 deficit.

The Red Raiders continued to fight in the third, pulling to an 11-11 tie before Texas proceeded to go on a 14-5 run to close the match. Texas hit .500 alone in the final set with just two errors and 16 kills.

Bailey Webster powered a Texas attack that finished with a .378 hitting percentage as she connected on a match-high 14 kills. Webster also led all players with a .591 attacking average as she had just one error off 22 attempts.

Molly McCage and Chiaka Ogbogu both hit over. 400 individually as well while putting down eight kills each. Hannah Allison dished out 32 assists while totaling three digs for the Longhorns as well.

The Red Raiders, who were without Breeann David for the fifth time this season, were led offensively by the duo of Jenna Allen and Meghan Stacy, who had nine and six kills each.

Aubree Piper added five kills and hit .556 for the match with no errors off nine swings.

Tech hit .167 as a team for the match after totaling just 10 attacking errors but, on the same note, struggled to put away points with just 26 kills. Tech’s 10 attacking errors marked its fewest in a match this season.

In a match largely impacted on the back row, Texas was able to keep the majority of Tech’s attacks from reaching the floor thanks to a 46-27 advantage in digs. Sarah Palmer had a team-high 15 digs for the Longhorns, nine of which that came in the opening set.
