FIRST PITCH • No. 23 Texas Tech hosts its first midweek series of the season beginning Tuesday night when New Mexico State arrives in Lubbock for the two-game set. The series is slated for 6:30 first pitch on Tuesday evening and then a 2 p.m. start on Wednesday.

• Texas Tech is coming off a 3-1 road trip last week with a midweek victory over Sam Houston State and then wins over No. 9 Houston and No. 6 Louisiana in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted at Minute Maid in Houston. The lone loss came to No. 18 Arkansas in Sunday’s tournament finale.

• Texas Tech infielder Michael Davis was named to the Shriners College Classic All-Tournament Team after the sophomore hit .583 overall (7-for-12) with a double and two RBI. He also led the Red Raiders with a pair of stolen bases.

• Texas Tech will be facing New Mexico State for the fifth-consecutive season and the 62nd time in program history on Tuesday night. The Red Raiders are 44-17 all-time against the Aggies after winning each of the past seven contests.

RED RAIDERS DEFEAT TWO TOP-10 TEAMS IN SHRINERS COLLEGE CLASSIC • Texas Tech finished 2-1 in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, defeating No. 9 Houston, 3-2, on Friday and No. 6 Louisiana, 5-3, in 10 innings Saturday before falling to No. 18 Arkansas, 10-6, in the tournament finale on Sunday.

• Texas Tech wrapped the College Classic with a 9-18 all-time record in the event held annually at Minute Maid Park in Houston.

• The Red Raiders’ pair of victories over No. 9 Houston and No. 6 Louisiana marked the first time Texas Tech had recorded consecutive wins over a top-10 opponent since winning the final three games of the 2014 season-opening series against No. 3 Indiana.

• The win over Louisiana was Texas Tech’s third-consecutive victory in the College Classic dating back to the Red Raiders’ 2014 victory over No. 10 Rice in the tournament finale. It marked Tech’s longest winning streak in the College Classic in program history.

• Texas Tech extended its win streak to five-consecutive games with a victory over Louisiana, its longest since winning six straight from Feb. 20-March 3 last year.

• The Red Raiders hit .280 as a team for the tournament with 14 runs scored and a pair of home runs that were hit by Stephen Smith and Orlando Garcia.

• The Red Raider pitching staff finished with a 3.86 ERA in the College Classic after allowing 15 runs (12 earned) over 28.0 complete innings.

• Ryan Long provided the game-winning RBI in each of Texas Tech’s two victories as he connected on a two-run single in the sixth inning against Houston and then added a two-run double in the 10th against Louisiana. He is the first Red Raider to record the game-winning RBI in back-to-back games since Tyler Neslony provided the winning run against both Northern Illinois (Feb. 21) and Sacramento State (Feb. 25) last season.

• Texas Tech scored five runs in the first inning against Arkansas, its most since plating seven runners on April 8, 2014, against Abilene Christian.

• Following the event, the Houston Astros announced that Texas Tech infielder Michael Davis had earned All-Tournament Team honors after leading the Red Raiders with a .583 average (7-for-12) over the course of all three games.

• In addition, the Astros also announced that Texas Tech will return to the Shriners College Classic in 2017, joining fellow Big 12 counterparts Baylor and TCU as well Southeastern Conference foes Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M. • The Red Raiders will be looking to extend a seven-game winning streak against New Mexico State that dates back to a March 25, 2013, midweek contest where the Aggies handed Texas Tech a 7-6 setback in Las Cruces.

• Texas Tech is an impressive 33-6 against New Mexico State at home as the Red Raiders have not lost on their home turf since falling, 7-6, on March 27, 2012.

• Texas Tech is averaging 8.1 runs per game against the Aggies in eight games under head coach Tim Tadlock.

TEXAS TECH NOTES • Texas Tech is off to a 6-2 start for the sixth time in the past seven season.

• The Red Raiders are currently in the midst of a stretch where Texas Tech plays 10 of 13 games against nationally-ranked opponents. Tech has already faced No. 9 Houston, No. 6 Louisiana and No. 18 Arkansas and still has a three-game set against No. 22 Cal State Fullerton this weekend and then a four-game series against No. 10 California on March 11-13.

• Texas Tech has stolen 10 bases already this season, its most through eight games since the Red Raiders swiped 21 bags in the same span during the 2012 season.

• Despite a bullpen full of newcomers, Texas Tech has compiled a 3.08 ERA through eight games, its lowest in that span since the 2014 season.

• Texas Tech has already inserted 33 of 35 players on the 2016 roster through eight games this season.

• Texas Tech currently boasts four players who rank in the top 10 in the Big 12 for batting average - Tanner Gardner (3rd - .444), Stephen Smith (7th - .406), Michael Davis (T-8th - .400) and Ryan Long (10th - .393).

• In addition, Texas Tech has five of the Big 12 top-10 leaders in doubles - Eric Gutierrez (1st - 5), Stephen Smith (2nd - 4), Michael Davis (T-3rd - 3), Tyler Neslony (T-3rd - 3) and Ryan Long (T-3rd - 3).

• Through games played this past weekend, Texas Tech is the Big 12 leader in on-base percentage (.444), at-bats (279), runs scored (61), hits (91), doubles (22), RBI (59) and sacrifice flies (6). Tech also ranks second in the league with a .326 batting average.

• Through the games played this past weekend, Texas Tech ranked among the top-25 teams nationally in the following categories: double plays turned (2nd), double plays turned per game (7th), doubles (11th), sacrifice flies (13th), hits (17th) and doubles per game (25th). Tech also ranks 28th for shutouts, 30th for runs scored and 37th for on-base percentage.

TEXAS TECH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS • Texas Tech remained in the national rankings this week as the Red Raiders stayed at No. 23 in the Perfect Game top-25 poll. Tech was also receiving votes in both the D1Baseball.com and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls.

• The Red Raiders began the year ranked 25th by Perfect Game and 39th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Tech was also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls.

• This is the second-straight year where the Red Raiders have started their season ranked in a preseason poll. It is the first time Texas Tech has appeared in the preseason rankings in consecutive seasons since prior to the 1999-2000 campaigns.

TIM TADLOCK NOTES • Texas Tech is 108-77 under fourth-year head coach Tim Tadlock.

• Tadlock owns a collegiate career record of 543-204 during 13 years as head coach (9 at Grayson, 4 at Tech).

• Texas Tech is 7-1 all-time against New Mexico State under head coach Tim Tadlock. The seven victories are tied with Baylor for the most against one particular opponent in Tadlock’s career.

• Texas Tech is 72-41 in non-conference games under head coach Tim Tadlock.

TURN TWO - RED RAIDERS ONCE AGAIN AMONG NATION’S ELITE IN DOUBLE PLAYS Texas Tech has regularly ranked among the top teams in the country in doubles plays turned under head coach Tim Tadlock. The Red Raiders ranked seventh nationally in Tadlock’s first season in 2013. Tech followed by finishing sixth in 2014 and then 14th in 2015.

Just one week into the 2016 season and the Red Raiders are on pace to continue that trend as Tech is ranked second nationally with 12 double plays turned this season. The Red Raiders turned five double plays on Opening Day alone, their most ever in a season opener dating back to 1987.

TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON • Steven Gingery became the third Red Raider freshman to start on the mound already this season last Wednesday night at Sam Houston State. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native joined fellow left-hander Erikson Lanning and right-hander Ty Harpenau after the duo both earned starts last weekend against Milwaukee.

• Tech had not previously started three true freshman within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign.

• Gingery is one five Red Raider freshmen pitchers to already appear on the mound this season, joining Lanning, Harpenau, Ryan Shetter, Jonathan Nicholson and Davis Martin. Shetter made his first career appearance Wednesday night at Sam Houston State.

• Martin has already been called on four times out of the bullpen as he is 1-0 with a Big 12-leading two saves. He is the first Red Raider dating back to 1998 to record a win and two saves through the first six games of a season.

IRON MAN GUTE In his three-plus seasons as a Red Raider, senior first baseman Eric Gutierrez simply does not know the feeling of being left out of the lineup. That’s mainly because it has never happened. Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock has penciled the senior onto the lineup card in all 185 games of his Red Raider career, marking the longest active streak in the country. A two-time All-Big 12 first team selection, Gutierrez is the only Red Raider on the 2016 roster to have started in every game of his career.

GUTE CHASING DOWN THE RECORD BOOK DURING SENIOR SEASON Eric Gutierrez will have a chance to leave his name in several spots in the Texas Tech record book following his senior season as he already ranks 10th in program history for career at-bats (639) and games played (177). The Mission, Texas native is also closing in on the career top-10 in several other offensive categories, including RBI (133), total bases (305) and hits (185). STEPHEN SMITH NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Stephen Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after the junior led the Red Raiders to a series win against Milwaukee. This is the first weekly award for Smith, who hit .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. He ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. Smith, who had at least one hit in all four games in the series, is the first Red Raider outfielder to receive Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Adam Kirsch earned the honor on May 19, 2014.

TEXAS TECH RETURNS BULK OF 2015 LINEUP • Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock boasts one of the most experienced lineups of his tenure this season as the Red Raiders return 12 position players from a year ago, including seven starters. It marks the second time in the past three seasons Tech has returned at least seven position starters as the Red Raiders previously brought back eight starters prior to the 2014 campaign.

• In Texas Tech’s group of seven returning position starters, five are seniors with a combined 539 games played over their career.

Eric Gutierrez, Tyler Neslony and Zach Davis all feature three years of experience in a Red Raider uniform while Tyler Floyd and Cory Raley both transfered to Tech following successful junior-college careers.

• Texas Tech is tied with Oklahoma State and Baylor for the most position starters returning heading into this season.

• Texas Tech’s group of returners accounted for 219 of the 269 RBI in 2015 (81 percent) as well as 33 of 41 home runs on the year (80 percent).

• The Red Raiders return their top four hitters (minimum of 50 at-bats) by average from the 2015 season in Cory Raley (.350), Eric Gutierrez (.315), Stephen Smith (.291) and Tyler Neslony (.286). That group combined for 23 home runs and 134 RBI during the 2015 season alone.

MOSELEY BECOMES SIXTH RED RAIDER FROM LUBBOCK TO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 1987 Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley - a 2013 graduate of Lubbock Cooper High School - is just the second Red Raider pitcher from Lubbock to earn the Opening Day start in back-to-back seasons since 1987. He joins former Red Raider and current Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis (2009-10) as the only Lubbock natives with multiple Opening Day starts.

The Red Raiders will face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Houston next weekend during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted by the Houston Astros. Tech will later face No. 7 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series at home and then No. 8 California in a four-game set in Berkeley. Dating back to the 1995 season, Tech has never played 10 of its first 17 games in a season against top-25 foes. The previous high was nine games against ranked opponents to start the 2012 season.

HOME OPENER ATTENDANCES Here is a look at the Red Raiders home openers the last 17 years dating back to 1999. Tech’s dominance in home openers dates back to 1985 where Tech owns a 28-2 record in home openers. The Red Raiders enter this season having won 17 of the last 18 home openers dating back to 1998. Tech snapped a school record with 4,375 fans in attendance at its 2015 season opener against San Francisco.

NEW TURF, VIDEO BOARD HIGHLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS TO RIP GRIFFIN PARK Red Raider fans will see a pair of new additions as they enter Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season as Texas Tech installed a new FieldTurf surface in December and then upgraded its video board to the version that previously occupied Jones AT&T Stadium.

The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN ... AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold roughly 2,500 season tickets in 2015, the most in program history and more than twice its total from 2014. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history.

FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd will enter his senior season with already a degree in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. FIVE RED RAIDERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT This year’s roster features five Red Raiders have been selected at some point of their career in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. One player, RHP Chandler Eden, has been selected twice, coming out of high school in 2013 and this past year following his sophomore year at Yavapai Junior College in Arizona.

Tim Tadlock, the 2014 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the head coach at Texas Tech after taking the Red Raiders to the College World Series in just his second season while winning over 100 games in his tenure.

Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in 2016. He owns a collegiate career record of 540-203 in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and three at Texas Tech (105-76).

Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record.

Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995.

After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000).

After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders where he helped lead Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (14), and son, Benjamin (12).

2016 AT A GLANCE Erikson Lanning made quite the debut in his first collegiate start Feb. 21 against Milwaukee. The southpaw picked up the win in Texas Tech’s 12-0 victory after allowing just one hit, a walk and a hit-by-pitch over six shutout innings. Milwaukee finished with just two hits off the Tech pitching staff in the game, marking the second consecutive two-hitter tossed by the Red Raiders. Tech had not previously recorded back-to-back two hit outings against an opponent dating back to the 2001 season.
