RED RAIDERS RETURN TO NON-CONFERENCE SLATE AT NEW MEXICO Fresh off its first loss since its season opener, Texas Tech will look to start another winning streak Monday night when the Red Raiders travel to Albuquerque for an 8 p.m. (CT) match against New Mexico at the Johnson Center.

TEXAS TECH OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2000 The Red Raiders enter Monday’s match boasting a 13-2 record, marking the program’s best start since the 2000 squad opened the year 16-1 en route to a 24-9 record and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech began that season with eight-straight wins before falling to Baylor on Sept. 13 and then followed with seven more wins to start its tournament run.

THE SERIES Texas Tech and New Mexico will be renewing a series that has not been played since 2001 when the Red Raiders defeated the Lobos, 3-0, in Lubbock. Tech holds a 9-6 all-time advantage in the series with wins in the last three matches. This will mark only the third trip to Albuquerque for Tech, which is 1-1 previously in those matches.

LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders resume their Big 12 slate Saturday afternoon as 25th-ranked Oklahoma comes to Lubbock for a 6:05 p.m. match at the United Spirit Arena. The match will be Tech’s annual Dig for the Cure promotion as all fans wearing pink will be admitted for only $1.

TECH FANS WILL SEE A FAMILIAR FACE ON NEW MEXICO BENCH New Mexico head coach Jeff Nelson will be facing his former school Monday evening as the fifth-year Lobo headman led the Red Raiders from 1995-02, compiling a 166-92 (.634) record during that span. Nelson led Tech to five NCAA Tournament appearances in his eight season on his way to becoming the second-most winningest coach in school history behind Janice Hudson. Only Mike Jones posted a better winning percentage than Nelson as Jones finished 128-62 (.674) from 1990-94.

IOWA STATE SNAPS TEXAS TECH’S 13-MATCH WINNING STREAK Iowa State snapped the Red Raiders’ 13-match winning streak Saturday with a 3-0 victory in Tech’s Big 12 opener at the United Spirit Arena. The loss ended Tech’s longest run since the 1996 season where the Red Raiders got off to a 15-0 start. Tech, which had not lost a match since the season opener at TCU, dropped its fourth-straight Big 12 opener, falling to 6-10 all-time in conference openers.

UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena, one of the finest multi-purpose venues in the country, is home to the Texas Tech basketball and volleyball programs. Constructed in 1999, the USA is named in honor of United Supermarkets, who was the project’s major donor. Since its creation, the 15,000 seat arena has hosted some of the top entertainment acts in the country, including George Strait, Brad Paisley, ZZ Top, and numerous others.

MATCH NOTES RED RAIDERS OPEN CONFERENCE ATOP THE BIG 12 STANDINGS After a successful start to the season, Tech began Big 12 action last week atop the conference standings for the first time since 1997 with a 13-1 record.

The Red Raiders, who were also 13-1 at that point, finished the 1997 season 23-11 overall, barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

NOTABLES u Tech trailed in kills and hitting percentage for the first time all season against Iowa State as the Red Raiders notched only 28 kills and a .049 hitting percentage, both season lows. u Tech had not previously been swept in any match this season prior to facing Iowa State. The last time the Red Raiders suffered a 3-0 loss was against Nebraska on Nov. 6, 2010. u The Red Raiders have held their opponents to a combined .083 hitting percentage so far this season, which is the lowest in the Big 12. Oklahoma currently ranks second as its opponents are hitting .151 on the year. u The North Texas match snapped a seven-match streak where the Red Raiders had claimed a 3-0 sweep. The run was Tech’s longest since opening the 1998 season with eight-straight sweeps. u Tech has dropped only seven sets so far this season, the lowest in the Big 12. The Red Raiders are the only school still in single-digits after Kansas fell in three Saturday moving the Jayhawks to 12 sets lost on the year. u Tech’s 13 wins this season are the school’s most since going 14-15 during the 2002 season. u Texas Tech’s win over UT-Arlington marked the program’s third tournament title of the season, a feat that had not been previously accomplished since the 2000 season. u Tech’s 3-0 sweep over UT-Arlington was its 11th of the year which is the school’s most in a singleseason since it totaled 14 during the 2000 season. u Tech has already surpassed its win total from the 2008-10 seasons combined as the Red Raiders won 11 games during those three years. u The Red Raiders have broken the 10-win barrier for the first time since the 2006 season where Tech finished 12-17 under Nancy Todd. u Tech has held its opponent to a hitting percentage below .100 in six of its last nine matches. Only UConn and Iowa State have posted a hitting percentage over .200 against the Red Raiders this year. u Tech has also held four of its opponents to a negative hitting percentage, which prior to the year had not been accomplished since facing Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2010. u The Red Raiders, meanwhile, have hit over .200 in all but three matches this season. Tech has been over .300 in five matches as well.

DOWDY CREEPING UP RECORD BOOK Amanda Dowdy made another step up the Tech record book against Iowa State as the senior moved to second all-time in career attempts, passing Melissa McGehee (1999-02). Dowdy now has 3,396 swings during her four seasons and trails McGehee by only 108 kills for second all-time in that category as well.

MEYERS MOVING ON UP RECORD BOOK TOO Like Dowdy, Karlyn Meyers faces the possibility of moving up the school’s record book as the senior setter recently became just the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists over a career.

She enters this weekend trailing Mary Loescher (1985-87) for seventh all-time with 2,263 career assists, 56 shy of Loescher’s mark.

RED RAIDERS PROVE THEY CAN COME BACK If the North Texas win proved anything, it showed that Tech could overcome an early deficit, especially on the road. The Red Raiders had not previously dropped the first set only to win the match in four since defeating Jackson State on Aug. 28, 2008, which was also played in Denton as part of the Mean Green Classic.

TECH CREATING HAVOC ON THE BLOCK Through matches played last weekend, the Red Raiders had become one of the country’s top blocking teams, posting a 3.20 blocks per set average which is tied for second nationally with Utah State.

Mikia Mills leads the way with a 1.31 average which is tied for 27th nationally. Aubree Piper, meanwhile, slightly trails with a 1.30 blocks per set mark, which is tied for 30th nationally. Syracuse leads the country with a 3.22 blocks per set aveage.

FLORA JOINS ELITE COMPANY IN RECORD BOOK When then athletics director Gerald Meyers hired Don Flora last January, he knew he was getting a proven head coach with an impressive record. Flora has proved Meyers’ pick to be a solid choice as Tech is 13-1 on the year, the best record through 14 matches for a first-year head coach in school history.

The California native passed Donna Martin, who led Tech to a 12-2 start in 1985 as the Red Raiders eventually ended the year 19-9 overall. Flora entered the year as one of the winningest coaches all-time in NCAA history after compiling a 269-59 record over 11 seasons at the University of La Verne in California.

SENIORS ENJOYING FINAL SEASON AT TECH Seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers have to be enjoying their final season in a Texas Tech uniform. The duo won a combined 11 games over their first three seasons, one less than Tech’s total so far this year. MATCH NOTES TEXAS TECH RECORD WHEN...

RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records.

The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she has recorded 1,041 over three seasons.

Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes, under Nancy Todd in 2008. Now, Dowdy and Meyers are off to one of the best seasons in school history while both are also climbing the Tech record book in several categories.

RED RAIDERS IN NCAA STATS After Tech’s successful start to the season, the Red Raiders have found themselves among the nation’s elite as the NCAA released its national statistic leaders as of last Monday. Here’s where Tech ranks: u 46th in kills per set with a 13.71 average. u 33rd in hitting percentage with a .260 average. u 19th in aces per set with a 1.80 mark. u 47th in assists per set with a 12.71 average. u Tied for second with 3.20 blocks per set. u Tied for 12th with .923 winning percentage.

ROAD TRIP MEANS NOTHING TO TECH Possibly the most important factor in Tech’s transformation under Don Flora has been its ability to score wins on the road. The Red Raiders had traditionally struggled away from Lubbock in recent years but have posted a 10-1 record in road or neutral site contests so far. That’s impressive for a program that entered the year with only 14 wins away from Lubbock since 2007.

TEXAS TECH BOOSTS OFFENSE WITH SERVE One of Don Flora’s areas of improvement early in the season was Tech’s serving ability after the Red Raiders posted double-digit error numbers twice in their first three matches. Tech has used the serve to its advantage lately as the Red Raiders have totaled 79 aces so far, six more than the 2010 season.

Nicole Hragyil and Amanda Dowdy lead the squad with 13 aces, while Tory Vaughan has added 12 of her own as well. Hragyil currently ranks ninth in the Big 12, averaging 0.31 aces per set.

TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own home tournament since 2004 when the Red Raiders defeated UTPA, UTEP, and North Texas as part of the Red Raider Classic.

PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDS Prior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan American, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational.

Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the process. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008.

DOWDY LEADS TRIO OF PLAYERS ON ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors.

Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend.

CAVE ACCURATE FROM THE RIGHT-SIDE Coming into the season, Don Flora knew he had a special talent in Miara Cave. His only question was would that translate into kills when the Red Raiders hit the floor. The junior has proved Flora right so far as she is second on the team in kills with 131 while her .303 hitting percentage leads the team. The San Antonio native has hit .400 or higher in six matches this season.

VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH After already matching her career high for digs twice this season, Tory Vaughan broke the 20 dig milestone in the tournament finale against Morehead State as the junior finished with 21 digs in the match. Her previous high had been 13 which she originally set against Texas State in 2009.

MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches.

In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006.

CAVE PRIMED FOR STELLAR JUNIOR SEASON When asked who his most improved player was at the end of spring, Don Flora did not have to hesitate to say Miara Cave. Flora’s has described Cave’s spring as “going back to the basics” as the junior primarily worked on her footwork. The result has been a newfound confidence for Cave, who will be looking to improve on last season’s numbers where she was second on the team with 176 kills.

DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with doubledigit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga.

FRESHMAN GET VALUABLE TIME AT TCU One thing Don Flora wanted to see while at TCU was how his young team of mainly freshmen and sophomores would respond in a competitive atmosphere. After Tech easily defeated Grambling State in the opening set, Flora went with a lineup to start the second frame that consisted of all freshmen. Tory Vaughan was the only Red Raider junior or senior to see action over the match’s final two sets as Tech played all 17 players that traveled that weekend.

DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection.

MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the mostaccomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average.

RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan.

FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONEL One of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Coronel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head

DAVID LOOKS TO FOLLOW FAMILY LEGACY Breeann David’s commitment to Texas Tech last spring not only gave the program one of the top recruits in the country, but it continued a family legacy. David’s mother, the former Megan McGuire, was a standout volleyball athlete for Tech in the 1980s while her father, Stan David, starred on the football team during the same time before being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1984 NFL Draft. Both her mother and aunt, Susan Kelly McGuire, are still among the top 10 in school history of every blocking category. David’s older sister, Leah David, is also the team’s student manager.

VAUGHAN RETURNS TO LIBERO POSITION Tory Vaughan will return to the libero position this season for the first time since she was a freshman.

The now-junior spent the 2010 as a defensive specialist, playing in all 29 matches while finishing fourth on the team with 147 digs. Vaughan played in all but two matches as a freshman, totaling 143 digs in the process, third-highest on the team.

RED RAIDERS BOAST 12 NEWCOMERS Soon after his hire, Don Flora immediately hit the recruiting trail, traveling all over the country trying to build the Tech roster. The hard work paid off as the Red Raiders boast 12 newcomers to this year’s roster, including nine high school prospects.

RANGEL BACK IN ACTION AFTER INJURY Dravon Rangel will be back in action for the first time in almost a year this week as the redshirt sophomore missed almost all of last season with a knee injury. Rangel played in two matches of the seasonopening Rice Tournament before receiving a medical redshirt at the conclusion of the season. Rangel will be making her return nearly 15 minutes from her hometown of Grand Prairie.

RED RAIDERS ADD SETTER TRANSFER, HRAGYIL Tech added depth to the setter position last spring as Nicole Hragyil became the first commitment of the Don Flora era, joining the program at midterm just in time to participate in spring drills. Hragyil adds depth for the Red Raiders as she will join Brandy Huskey as a backup to Karlyn Meyers. Both Hragyil and Huskey will also see time as a back row specialist.
