FIRST PITCH • Texas Tech returns to Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park on Tuesday afternoon when the Red Raiders host New Mexico in a 2 p.m. first pitch.

• Texas Tech is 3-1 this season in midweek games as the Red Raiders went on the road to defeat Sam Houston State and UT Arlington and split a two-game series at home against New Mexico State.

• The Red Raiders are coming off a series win last weekend at Baylor in their Big 12 opener in Waco. The series victory marked the first time Tech has won a Big 12 series opener since the 2013 season.

• The Baylor series concluded a six-game, 11-day road trip for the Red Raiders as Texas Tech traveled to No. 9 California and a neutral-site contest with UT Arlington before facing the Bears.

• Tanner Gardner and Davis Martin both earned Big 12 weekly awards on Monday as Gardner was named Player of the Week while Martin garnered top newcomer accolades.

• Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock enters this week needing just one win to tie Dan Spencer for Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock needs win to move into a tie for third all-time third all-time in program history. Tadlock, who was hired by his alma mater prior to the 2013 one in program history. season, has recorded 114 wins in three-plus seasons.

• In addition, Tadlock needs just one more win to reach 550 for his career. Tadlock spent nine seasons at Grayson Community College before eventually being hired at Texas Tech prior to the 2013 season.

• Texas Tech currently leads the Big 12 with four victories over ranked opponents. Texas is the only school in the conference to play more than eight games already this year against ranked opponents (12).

• The Red Raider pitching staff frustrated both UT Arlington and Baylor last week as Texas Tech surrendered just over three runs per game. Tech began the Baylor series with a 5-0 victory, its first shutout of a Big 12 opponent on the road since the Red Raiders topped Texas, 1-0, on March 15, 2013, in Austin.

• Texas Tech and New Mexico will meet for the 111th time on a baseball diamond Tuesday afternoon. It is the second-longest streak among Tech non-conference opponents, trailing only the 113 previous contests between the Red Raiders and Rice. Tech will tie that mark later this season with a two-game series at New Mexico.

TANNER GARDNER Tanner Gardner was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday afternoon after the sophomore led the conference with a .615 average (8-for-13). The successful week pushed Gardner’s average to a Big 12-leading .467 clip for the season.

He is also the conference leader with a .568 on-base percentage and ranks second with 28 hits and fourth with a .600 slugging percentage. Gardner leads the Red Raiders with nine multi-hit performances this season, four of which that have come in the past five games.

INSIDE THE NEW MEXICO SERIES • Texas Tech and New Mexico will meet for the 111th time on a baseball diamond Tuesday afternoon. • The Red Raiders are 65-44-1 all-time against the Lobos, including a 41-20 mark in games played in Lubbock.

• This will be the 18th-consecutive season where the Red Raiders and Lobos have faced each other as the two schools have met each other every year since 1998.

• The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak against the Lobos as New Mexico swept a pair of midweek games in 2015 and the final meeting between the two schools in 2014.

RECAPPING THE BAYLOR SERIES • Texas Tech improved to 8-11-1 all-time in Big 12 opening series after taking two-of-three games last weekend at Baylor.

• Texas Tech improved to 4-10 all-time in Big 12 opening series that come on the road.

• The series marked the fifth time Texas Tech and Baylor have met to open Big 12 play. The Red Raiders are now 2-3 in those series.

• The series win marked the first for the Red Raiders since claiming two-of-three games at Texas in 2013.

• The series win was the third in the last four seasons against Baylor and the first in Waco since 2011.

• Texas Tech defeated Baylor, 5-0, in the series opener, its first shutout of a Big 12 opponent since the Red Raiders topped West Virginia, 4-0, on May 17, 2014.

• In addition, the shutout was the first for the Red Raiders against a Big 12 opponent on the road since edging Texas, 1-0, on March 15, 2013, in Austin.

• Texas Tech had not previously shut out Baylor since the Red Raiders defeated the Bears, 1-0, on March 5, 1993, in Lubbock. It was the first shutout against the Bears in Waco since Tech handed the Bears a 4-0 setback on April 21, 1989.

TEXAS TECH NOTES • Texas Tech is returning to Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this week to begin a four-game homestand. The Red Raiders previously played six games over the past 11 days, all of which that came on the road.

• Texas Tech is 8-3 this season against non-ranked opponents with wins in four of the past five games.

• Texas Tech is a combined 8-2 this season when the Red Raiders hit at least one home run.

• Texas Tech is a perfect 11-0 this season when either leading or tied following the eighth inning.

• Texas Tech has found its most success offensively in the second inning this season as the Red Raiders are out-scoring opponents, 22-4, in the frame.

• Defensively, Texas Tech has committed just three errors over the past five games for a .984 fielding percentage. The Red Raiders have recorded six doubles plays during that span.

• The Red Raiders scored 10 or more runs five times over their 16 games this season. It is the first time Texas Tech has plated at least 10 runs in that span to start a season since 2007 (six times).

• Texas Tech has connected on 15 home runs already this season, its most through 19 games since crushing 19 in that same span to start the 2010 campaign.

• Texas Tech currently controls the Big 12 single-game high this season for home runs after hitting five on March 3 against New Mexico State.

• In nine home games this season, Texas Tech is averaging just over seven runs per game as the Red Raiders are hitting .299 overall with seven home runs, 23 doubles, a triple and 64 RBI. • The Red Raiders currently rank among the top four in the Big 12 for batting average (.280), on-base percentage (.377), slugging percentage (.417), runs scored (110), hits (152), doubles (33), home runs (13), RBI (103) and sacrifice flies (7).

• Texas Tech has already inserted 34 of 35 players on the 2016 roster through 16 games this season.

• Through seven games at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season, Texas Tech currently ranks among the national leaders in attendance. The Red Raiders currently rank 12th nationally in total attendance (33,147) and then 15th in average attendance (3,683).

AROUND THE DIAMOND • Tanner Gardner enters this week as the Big 12 leader with a .467 batting average and .568 on-base percentage. He also ranks fifth nationally in both categories through games played Sunday night.

• Tanner Gardner enters this week having recorded at least two hits in four of the past five games. He is one of two Red Raiders to rank among the top 10 in the league for batting average, joining Stephen Smith who ranks ninth with a .338 clip.

• Michael Davis leads the Red Raiders with eight doubles this season which currently ranks tied for second in the Big 12. His eight doubles are five more than his total from his 2015 freshman season.

• Eric Gutierrez leads the Red Raiders with a .485 average in home games this season as the senior has driven in 14 runs thanks in part to five doubles and a pair of home runs. His .538 on-base percentage also leads the team in home games.

• Robert Dugger enters this week as the Big 12 leader with a 0.90 ERA. The junior has allowed just two earned runs over 20.0 complete innings this season. He has not allowed an earned run in each of his last six appearances.

• Robert Dugger is tied for second in the Big 12 entering this week after the right-hander collected his third save of the season Sunday afternoon with 1.1 innings out of the bullpen against Baylor.

• Hayden Howard is currently tied for the Big 12 lead with four wins this season, all of which that have come out of the bullpen.

His 1.57 ERA ranks third currently in the conference.

• Hayden Howard has also not allowed a walk over his last 17.1 innings, marking the first time a Red Raider has tossed 15.0-consecutive innings without a walk since Jonny Drozd went 15.1-straight innings from April 22-May 15, 2014.

• In addition to Dugger and Howard, Davis Martin also ranks eighth in the Big 12 with a 2.18 ERA. Texas Tech is the only school in the conference with three pitchers ranked among the top eight of the conference in ERA. • Eric Gutierrez and Tyler Neslony rank among the Big 12 leaders with 18 RBI this season. Texas Tech and TCU are the only two schools in the conference to have at least two players record at least 18 RBI entering this week.

• Cory Raley became the second Red Raider to record a multi-home run game already this season last Saturday as the senior connected on a solo home run and a three-run shot in Texas Tech’s 11-8 victory over No. 9 California. He joined Tyler Neslony, who hit a pair of long balls on March 2 against New Mexico State.

TEXAS TECH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS • Texas Tech remained in the national rankings this week as the Red Raiders moved up two spots to No. 23 in the Perfect Game top-25 poll. It matches the highest ranking of the season for the Red Raiders, who have appeared in the Perfect Game poll in all six games of the 2016 season.

• In addition to the Perfect Game rankings, Texas Tech is also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ poll.

• The Red Raiders began the year ranked 25th by Perfect Game and 39th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Tech was also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls.

• This is the second-straight year where the Red Raiders have started their season ranked in a preseason poll. It is the first time Texas Tech has appeared in the preseason rankings in consecutive seasons since prior to the 1999-2000 campaigns.

GARDNER, MARTIN COLLECT BIG 12 WEEKLY HONORS • Texas Tech sophomore outfielder Tanner Gardner was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Monday afternoon while freshman right-handed pitcher Davis Martin collected top newcomer honors.

• The weekly award was the first career accolade for both Gardner and Martin as the duo helped lead the Red Raiders (12-7; 2-1) to a 3-1 record last week, including a series win at Baylor in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

• Gardner led all Big 12 players last week with a .615 average (8-for-13) that included at least two hits in three of four games. The successful week pushed Gardner’s average to a Big 12-leading .467 clip for the season. He is also the conference leader with a .568 on-base percentage and ranks second with 28 hits and fourth with a .600 slugging percentage.

• Martin, meanwhile, became the first Red Raider freshman in school history to earn the win in a Big 12 opener last Friday as he tossed six shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over Baylor. Martin, just the first Tech freshman to start a Big 12 opener since current Miami Marlin closer AJ Ramos in 2006, allowed just two hits and struck out four en route to leading the Red Raiders to their second shutout ever in a Big 12 opener.

• The shutout was also the first for Tech against Baylor since the Red Raiders claimed a 1-0 victory on March 5, 1993, in Lubbock.

Tech had not previously shut out Baylor in Waco since recording a 4-0 victory on April 21, 1989.

MARTIN BECOMES FIRST RED RAIDER FRESHMAN TO START A BIG 12 OPENER SINCE RAMOS Davis Martin became the first Red Raider freshman to start a Big 12 opener since current Miami Marlins closer AJ Ramos earned the nod against Texas in 2006 last Friday against Baylor. Ramos tossed five strong innings against Texas, allowing three runs off five hits and three strikeouts in a no-decision. The Longhorns broke a 3-3 tie with a run in the ninth to secure a 4-3 victory. Martin put together quite the performance of his own as he tossed six shutout innings in a 5-0 victory over the Bears. He is the first Red Raider freshman in school history to earn the win in a Big 12 opener. The shutout was the first for the Red Raiders against Baylor in the Big 12 era. Martin, who is now 2-0 this season, was making just the second start of his career.

TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON • The Texas Tech rotation has featured a freshman starting pitcher in five of the past six games.

• Texas Tech has started a freshman on the mound in 12 of its 19 games this season. Ty Harpenau leads the group with four starts already this season.

• Four different Red Raider freshmen have started on the mound this season - Steven Gingery, Ty Harpenau, Erikson Lanning and Davis Martin. Martin became the fourth Red Raiders to start on March 12 when he earned the nod against No. 9 California.

• Texas Tech had not previously started three true freshmen within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign.

• Texas Tech has used six different freshmen pitchers already this season in Lanning, Harpenau, Gingery, Martin, Ryan Shetter and Jonathan Nicholson.

• Over the first two games of the Baylor series, Martin and Gingery combined to allow just four hits, two each, over 11.0 shutout innings. The duo also combined on 10 strikeouts.

• Martin has already been called on five times out of the bullpen as he is 2-0 with two saves. He is the first Red Raider dating back to 1998 to record a win and two saves through the first six games of a season. Martin moved to the weekend rotation prior to the start of the California series.

• Gingery recorded his most impressive performance so far this season on March 2 as the left-hander struck out 12 hitters in a 14-2 rout of New Mexico State. His 12 strikeouts marked the most by a Tech freshman pitcher since Miles Morgan fanned 15 on March 18, 2006, against Texas. The performance earned Gingery his first career win.

• Harpenau is still looking for his first career win as he has earned four no-decisions despite several quality starts. Harpenau went five complete innings against both Milwaukee and No. 6 Louisiana and left the game with the Red Raiders tied in both outings.

• Lanning began his Red Raider career by tossing six shutout innings against Milwaukee where he allowed just one hit while striking out four in a 12-0 rout. The performance marked the first time a Red Raider freshman had earned the win and combined on a shutout in his career debut since Matt Withrow helped Texas Tech trounce Northern Illinois, 13-0, on Feb. 17, 2013.

• Shetter picked up his first career win on Feb. 27 with two shutout innings of relief in Texas Tech’s 5-3 victory over No. 6 Louisiana. #WreckEm

TURN TWO - RED RAIDERS ONCE AGAIN AMONG NATION’S ELITE IN DOUBLE PLAYS Texas Tech has regularly ranked among the top teams in the country in doubles plays turned under head coach Tim Tadlock. The Red Raiders ranked seventh nationally in Tadlock’s first season in 2013. Tech followed by finishing sixth in 2014 and then 14th in 2015.

Just four weeks into the 2016 season and the Red Raiders are on pace to continue that trend as Tech ranks seventh nationally with 23 double plays turned this season. The Red Raiders turned five double plays on Opening Day alone, their most ever in a season opener dating back to 1987.

TADLOCK JUST ONE WIN SHY OF PLACING THIRD ALL-TIME IN TEXAS TECH HISTORY Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock could potentially take over third place on the school’s career wins chart early in the 2016 season as the fourth-year skipper trails Dan Spencer (2009-12) by one win heading into Tuesday’s midweek game against New Mexico.

Tadlock, who has won 114 games over the past three-plus seasons, led the Red Raiders to 26 victories his first season in 2013 (second-most by a Tech head coach in debut season). He followed with 45 wins - the fourth-most in school history - and Tech’s first ever trip to the College World Series in 2014 before finishing with 31 victories a year ago. Tech is coming off consecutive 30-win seasons for just the first time since the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

STEPHEN SMITH NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Stephen Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after the junior led the Red Raiders to a series win against Milwaukee. This is the first weekly award for Smith, who hit .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. He ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. Smith, who had at least one hit in all four games in the series, is the first Red Raider outfielder to receive Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Adam Kirsch earned the honor on May 19, 2014.

MOSELEY BECOMES SIXTH RED RAIDER FROM LUBBOCK TO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 1987 Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley - a 2013 graduate of Lubbock Cooper High School - is just the second Red Raider pitcher from Lubbock to earn the Opening Day start in back-to-back seasons since 1987. The Red Raiders will face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Houston next weekend during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted by the Houston Astros. Tech will later face No. 7 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series at home and then No. 8 California in a four-game set in Berkeley. Dating back to the 1995 season, Tech has never played 10 of its first 17 games in a season against top-25 foes. The previous high was nine games against ranked opponents to start the 2012 season.

The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

Michael Davis has boosted the Red Raider offense with eight doubles already this season, five more than his total from his 2015 freshman season. His eight doubles currently rank tied for second in the Big 12 entering this week.

HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN ... AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold out of season tickets just a few weeks later, marking the second-straight year where Red Raider fans have purchased over 2,500 season tickets. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history.

FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd will enter his senior season with already a degree in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. SIX RED RAIDERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT This year’s roster features five Red Raiders have been selected at some point of their career in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Tim Tadlock, the 2014 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the head coach at Texas Tech after taking the Red Raiders to the College World Series in just his second season while winning over 100 games in his tenure.

Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in 2016. He owns a collegiate career record of 547-208 in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and three at Texas Tech (112-81).

Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record.

Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995.

After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000).

After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders where he helped lead Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (14), and son, Benjamin (12).

DAMRON BEGINS SEASON WITH TWO-HITTER AGAINST MILWAUKEE Damron began his season by combining on a two-hitter in the second game of a Feb. 20 doubleheader against Milwaukee. Damron allowed just an unearned run off one hit and four strikeouts in the 9-1 victory which was followed by another two-hitter the following day to conclude the Milwaukee series. Texas Tech had not previously tossed consecutive two-hitters dating back to the start of the 2001 season.

DAMRON LEADS ACTIVE RED RAIDERS IN CAREER WINS Damron enters Tuesday night’s with the team high in career wins as the junior is 7-3 over his two-plus seasons as a Red Raider. The southpaw has compiled a 3.89 ERA during that span after allowing just 27 earned runs in his 76.1 innings. Damron is trailed by Opening Day starter Ryan Moseley, who has six victories in his two-plus seasons.

AVOIDING THE LONG BALL In his 76.1 innings as a Red Raider, Damron has notoriously avoided the home run ball. In fact, the junior has allowed just two home runs during his career despite facing 347 batters entering his start Tuesday against UT Arlington.

DAMRON IN THE MLB DRAFT Damron was the highest selected pitcher by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013 as the left-hander was drafted in the 13th round. Damron is one of five Red Raiders on the 2016 roster who has been drafted previously by a MLB organization.
