• Texas Tech closes its 20-game road trip to start the 2015 season this weekend as the Red Raiders will travel to the Cowgirl Classic hosted by McNeese State.

• The Red Raiders open the three-day tournament with a Friday doubleheader against Drake and McNeese State.

Tech continues the weekend with another doubleheader Saturday against Memphis and McNeese State before closing the tournament Sunday morning against Holy Cross.

• Drake is a late addition to the tournament as the Bulldogs were previously scheduled to take part in a doubleheader at Austin Peay on Thursday before beginning the Purple and Gold Challenge hosted by Lipscomb on Friday.

Both events were canceled due to winter conditions.

• This will be Tech’s first ever trip to Lake Charles, Louisiana, to face McNeese State. The Red Raiders traveled to the state of Louisiana to open the 2014 season as Tech took part in the Lions Classic hosted by Southeastern Louisiana.

• The Red Raiders enter this weekend riding a four-game winning streak after a perfect 4-0 showing at the UT Arlington Invitational. This is Tech’s longest winning streak so far this season.

• The Red Raider offense has been hitting at all cylinders lately as Tech has totaled 40 runs over its last four games, highlighted by a season-high 12 runs in its UT Arlington Invitational finale against Prairie View A&M. • Texas Tech won all four of its games at UT Arlington by a margin of at least four runs as the Red Raiders posted their first two run-rule victories of the year over DePaul and Prairie View A&M. • Texas Tech enters this weekend as the Big 12 leader in stolen bases as the Red Raiders have recorded 32 through 15 games this year. The Red Raiders have used a balanced approach on the base paths as well as 10 different players have swiped a bag thus far.

DRAKE Texas Tech and Drake will meet for the third time in school history Friday afternoon in the Cowgirl Classic opener. The two schools are 1-1 all-time against each other as the Red Raiders claimed an 8-2 victory over Drake on Feb. 28, 2004. Drake evened the series in 2009 with a 5-2 victory on Feb. 20. Both previous meetings between the two schools have been played a neutral site, similar to this weekend’s contest in Lake Charles.

Game notes, statistics, lineups, and rosters are provided prior to first pitch. A pregame meal is also served in the press box 45 minutes prior to first pitch.

MCNEESE STATE Texas Tech will face McNeese State in a two-game series for the second time since 2013 this weekend. The Red Raiders, who are making their first ever trip to Lake Charles, control a 3-2 all-time advantage in the series with McNeese after the two teams split a pair of games in 2013 during the Texas Tech Invitational. Both games in the 2013 series were one-run affairs as Tech edged McNeese State, 3-2, in the opening before the Cowgirls came back to hand the Red Raiders a 1-0 shutout a day later. The two schools also met twice during the 2000 series with Tech taking 4-2 and 10-0 victories at the Troy Cox Classic hosted by New Mexico State. The only other meeting between the two schools came on Feb. 24, 1996, when McNeese claimed a 4-2 victory over a Red Raider program that was in its first year back as an intercollegiate sport.

HOLY CROSS Texas Tech will be facing Holy Cross for the first time in school history Sunday morning. The Crusaders are one of six first-time opponents for the Red Raiders this season, joining the likes of Montana, Grand Canyon, UT Martin, Mississippi Valley State and Seattle.

PLAYER TO WATCH...

Jordan Bettiol was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday after reaching base in 13 of 16 plate appearances last weekend at the UT Arlington Invitational. She currently leads the Big 12 with 24 base hits through 15 games this year.

2015 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL BETTIOL NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Texas Tech junior Jordan Bettiol was named the Big 12 Player of the Week on Tuesday after she reached in 13 of 16 plate appearances last weekend at the UT Arlington Invitational. Bettiol hit a team-leading .769 (10-for-13) over the course of the weekend, helping lead the Red Raiders (9-6) to a 4-0 showing with wins over the likes of DePaul, a preseason top-25 team, as well as host UT Arlington. The Nebraska transfer recorded at least two hits in three of Tech’s four games with the only exception coming in a 12-0 rout of Prairie View A&M Saturday night. Bettiol finished 1-for-1 overall against the Panthers with a pair of walks and two stolen bases. Bettiol totaled an impressive .813 on-base percentage to go along with an .846 slugging percentage over the four games. She also stole four bases and drove in four runs, two of which that came in a 9-1 run-rule of DePaul in the tournament opener Friday.

RED RAIDERS FINDING WAYS TO COME FROM BEHIND Texas Tech recorded its third come-from-behind victory of the season last Friday evening when the Red Raiders rallied from an early five-run deficit to top UT Arlington, 10-6. It was the third comeback already this year for the Red Raiders, who trailed heading to the seventh inning in the season opener against New Mexico State and then fell behind again later that evening against Montana. The five-run comeback against UT Arlington marked the largest deficit Tech has overcome in a victory since the Red Raiders rallied from a similar five-run deficit to defeat No. 19 Texas A&M on April 18, 2012.

BETTIOL HITTING AT RECORD PACE TO START THE SEASON Jordan Bettiol’s debut as a Red Raiders has been quite impressive over the first three weekends of the season. Bettiol, a junior transfer from Nebraska, is hitting a team-leading .500 (24-for-48) through 15 games this season which ranks second currently in the Big 12. Dating back to the 2007 season, her average is the highest for a Red Raider who has played in each of the first 15 games of a season. Bettiol leads all Red Raiders with seven multiple-hit games already this year, three of which that came last weekend at the UT Arlington Invitational. The College Station, Texas native enters this weekend leading the Big 12 Conference with 24 base hits. She also ranks among the conference leaders in runs scored, stolen bases and on-base percentage.

RED RAIDERS STAYING AGGRESSIVE ON THE BASE PATHS Since taking over the Texas Tech softball program last summer, Adrian Gregory has insisted she wants the Red Raiders to be aggressive in every aspect of the game - pitching, hitting and on the base paths. Through three weekends, that philosophy can best be seen on the base paths where the Red Raiders have stolen 32 bases, the most currently in the Big 12. Tech has had 10 different players swipe a bag this season, led by Brooke Scott who already has a career-high eight stolen bases.

WARNECKE PROVIDES POWER IN MIDDLE OF THE LINEUP Brittany Warnecke has pretty much solidified herself in the middle of the Texas Tech lineup through the first three weeks of the season as the sophomore leads the Red Raiders with three home runs and 13 RBI through the first 15 games of the season. Warnecke connected on two home runs and seven RBI alone during the CenturyLink Classic as she went deep in both games against UTSA. In addition to her power numbers, Warnecke, who recorded just one home run and three RBI as a freshman in 2014, is hitting .326 for the season which currently ranks third on the team.

THOMEY FINDING THE GAPS EARLY IN THE YEAR Through the first three weeks of the season, there are not many gaps in the outfield that Devon Thomey has not found thus far. Thomey, a sophomore transfer from New Mexico State, leads the Red Raiders with a .750 slugging percentage after recording seven extra-base hits through the first 15 games. Thomey has powered three home runs already this season to go along with a pair of doubles and two triples while also stealing seven bases as Tech’s normal designated player. Her .750 slugging percentage currently ranks third in the Big 12 Conference as she is also among the league leaders in triples, RBI, stolen bases, and total bases.

MAISEL RECORDS FIRST CAREER WIN OVER UMKC Texas Tech sophomore Mattison Maisel recorded her first career victory last Saturday in a 9-6 victory over UMKC. Maisel, who is in her first year as part of the main pitching rotation, tossed a career-high 3.1 innings of relief against UMKC where she allowed just one run off four hits. Her 3.57 earned-run average (ERA) is currently the lowest for a Tech pitcher this season.

RED RAIDERS RECORD 600TH CAREER WIN IN PROGRAM HISTORY OVER MONTANA Texas Tech’s second win of the season - an 8-5 decision over Montana - marked the 600th in program history as the Red Raiders are now 600-652-4 overall. Tech, now in its 24th season of softball, started its program in 1981 before disbanding it following the 1985 season. Softball returned as a sponsored intercollegiate sport in 1996 with the start of the Big 12 Conference.

RED RAIDERS OPEN 2015 WITH COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE In just its first game of the 2015 season, Texas Tech proved that no lead was safe, even after six innings. The Red Raiders, facing a 3-2 deficit in the top of the seventh against New Mexico State, used a three-run inning to pull off a 5-3 victory over the Aggies, the first in the career of head coach Adrian Gregory. Devon Thomey highlighted the come-from-behind victory with a two-run double to the wall in center field that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe. Tech previously tied the game on a wild pitch that allowed Brooke Scott to scamper home from third base. It marked only the third time since the start of the 2012 season where the Red Raiders have won despite trailing at the start of the seventh inning.

THOMEY TURNS IN MEMORABLE OPENING DAY IN RETURN TO LAS CRUCES Opening Day for Devon Thomey was not just an opportunity for a fresh start with Texas Tech but also a chance to return to New Mexico State where she played her 2014 freshman season. Thomey made the most of her return by going 4-for-7 with six RBI in an Opening Day doubleheader against New Mexico State and Montana. The performance included the game-winning hit against the Aggies as Thomey drilled a double to center field in the seventh inning that scored both Susan Welborn and Kristi Belshe and gave Tech a 5-3 lead it would not relinquish. Thomey followed up by going 3-for-3 with four RBI later that evening against Montana, finishing a double shy of the cycle after a RBI triple in the second and then a two-run homer, the first in her collegiate career in the fourth inning. Her six RBI on the day were one more than her entire total from 2014.

MAISEL TURNS IN SOLID PERFORMANCE DURING OPENING WEEKEND Despite making her first collegiate appearance in the circle last season, Mattison Maisel saw her first significant time last weekend during the Hotel Encanto Classic. Maisel, who entered this season having only tossed two-thirds of an inning, saw action in three of five games while making her first career start in the tournament finale last Saturday against No. 18 Nebraska. Maisel gave the Red Raiders a chance to win against the Huskers as she went a career-high 3.1 innings, allowing four runs off six hits before leaving Tech holding onto a slim 4-3 lead. The right-hander closed the weekend with a 5.60 earned-run average in five full innings of work. Nebraska was the only team to score off Maisel as the right-hander recorded shutout appearances against both Montana and UTSA. CUSTER MOVES TO SECOND ALL-TIME IN WINS WITH WIN OVER NEW MEXICO STATE All it took was seven innings into the 2015 season for Cara Custer to move into sole possession of second place for wins in the Texas Tech career record book. Custer, a native of Tacoma, Washington, tossed seven strong innings in the season opener against New Mexico State where she picked up career win No. 52 to pass Ashly Jacobs (2007-10) for second all-time in program history. In addition to her rise up the career wins chart, Custer is also chasing several other records as well, including saves, appearances, games started, complete games, ERA and strikeouts.

Gregory joins the likes of Bobby Reeves (2001), Amy Suiter (2009) and Shanon Hays (2010) as Texas Tech head coaches to win in their debut. With Gregory’s come-from-behind victory over New Mexico State, Texas Tech head coaches are now 4-3 all-time when making their debut.

Adrian Gregory 2015 at New Mexico State W, 5-3 GREGORY MAKES DEBUT LEADING THE RED RAIDERS Texas Tech made its official debut under Adrian Gregory on Feb. 5 as the first-year head coach began her tenure with a 5-3 victory over New Mexico State after being hired as the seventh coach in program history this past June. Gregory, a longtime Texas native, arrives at Tech following four seasons as an assistant coach at Sam Houston State. One of the top hitters in Texas A&M history during her collegiate playing career, Gregory has also made coaching stops at Utah and the New England Riptide, formerly of the National Pro Fastpitch League (NPFL).

GREGORY BECOMES FIRST NEW BIG 12 HEAD COACH SINCE 2010 The Big 12 Conference will have a first-year head coach roaming the third base baseline for the time since 2010 this season with new Red Raider skipper Adrian Gregory. The last time the conference had a new head coach making a debut came in 2010 when current Kansas skipper Megan Smith and former Texas Tech head coach Shanon Hays joined the league. The conference has not experienced much turnover in the coaching ranks during its existence as Oklahoma’s Patty Gasso and Texas’ Connie Clark have been with both programs since before the league formed in 1996 while Baylor head coach Glenn Moore is entering his 15th season leading the Lady Bears.

RED RAIDERS IMPROVE TO 11-9 ALL-TIME IN SEASON OPENERS Texas Tech bumped its record in season openers to 11-9 all-time last weekend with its 5-3 victory over New Mexico State. The win marked the sixth time in the past seven years where the Red Raiders have opened the season with a victory. The only loss during that span came in 2014 when Tech fell, 4-3, to Akron. Tech had previously won each of its last five season openers, defeating Central Florida in 2009, Wisconsin in 2010, No. 16 BYU in 2011, San Diego State in 2012 and Central Florida in 2013.

The streak of five-consecutive wins in season openers marked the longest in program history.

TEXAS TECH STARTS ITS SEASON ON THE ROAD The Red Raiders will become accustomed to life on the road throughout the month of February as Texas Tech will play its first 20 games of the season away from home. Following its trip to Las Cruces, N.M., Tech will also travel to tournaments at Texas State, UT Arlington and McNeese State. The Red Raiders open their home slate on March 6 with a doubleheader against Utah Valley and UT Martin to begin the Texas Tech Invitational. The 20-game road trip is the longest Tech has gone to start the year without playing at home since the Red Raiders traveled for the first 22 games of the 2009 season.

RED RAIDERS FIRST BIG 12 PROGRAM TO OPEN 2015 SEASON Texas Tech was the first Big 12 program to open the 2015 season on Feb. 5 as the Red Raiders began their season with a 3 p.m. CT first pitch against New Mexico State. Oklahoma was the only other conference school to play that day as the Sooners faced DePaul in a 7:30 p.m. CT start in Hawaii. Tech closed Opening Day against Montana later that evening.

BETTIOL, THOMEY TRANSFER TO TEXAS TECH Both Devon Thomey and Jordan Bettiol will join the Red Raider program this season after transferring to Texas Tech this past fall. Thomey and Bettiol were two of the first signees Adrian Gregory secured soon after being named Texas Tech’s head coach last June. Thomey played one season at New Mexico State where she hit .309 with five RBI and 14 runs scored in 2014.

Bettiol, meanwhile, sat out the 2014 season after garnering second team All-Big Ten honors in 2013 after hitting .274 for the Huskers, including a team-high .400 clip during conference play alone. Her performance both at the plate and in the outfield helped lead Nebraska to the NCAA Women’s College World Series for the seventh time in program history.

2015 TEXAS TECH SOFTBALL MCDONALD, LOCKE JOIN GREGORY AS PART OF INAUGURAL STAFF Soon after her hire last June as the seventh head coach in Texas Tech history, Adrian Gregory first act was to quickly assemble a highly-successful coaching staff around her. She succeeded with the hires of associate head coach Sharonda McDonald and assistant coach Amanda Locke. Two highly successful athletes during their respective playing careers, both McDonald and Locke were hired weeks following Gregory taking the position and immediately hit the ground running on the recruiting trail. McDonald, a former teammate of Gregory at Texas A&M, arrives at Tech after spending the previous two seasons as the volunteer assistant coach at LSU while Locke comes from Northwestern State where she served as pitching coach the past two years.

HOPSON, SCOTT ELECTED CO-CAPTAINS FOR 2015 The Red Raiders elected a pair of team captains prior to the seasons in senior Lea Hopson and junior Brooke Scott. In addition to being named a team captain, the duo will likely former the middle part of Texas Tech’s infield with Scott starting at second while Hopson will move to shortstop after spending the entire 2014 season at second. The two could also switch positions from time-to-time throughout the season as well. The two captains were elected in a vote by their teammates.

MILES LEADS GROUP OF RETURNERS AT THE PLATE Following one of the best freshman seasons in school history, Kierra Miles will be looked upon once again to boost the middle of the Texas Tech lineup after the sophomore hit .310 in 2014 with seven home runs and 36 RBI. The successful rookie campaign marked just the seventh time in program history where a Red Raider freshman has hit .300 or better in her first season. A native of Mustang, Oklahoma, Miles was one of four Tech players to hit above .300 while she finished second overall for RBI and tied for second in home runs. She will more than likely begin the year in the middle of the Tech lineup.

BELSHE MAKES MOVE BEHIND THE PLATE Possibly the biggest change for Texas Tech this season defensively will be seen behind the plate as senior Kristi Belshe added catching responsibilities this past fall. Belshe, who started primarily in left field as a junior, will split duties behind the plate with sophomore Brittany Lee, who similarly will see action at multiple positions across the diamond this season. Belshe arrived at Tech in 2014 after earned NJCAA All-American honors at Lake Land College in Illinois. She is the first Red Raider in program history to hail from the state of Hawaii.

HOPSON RETURNS WITH SPEED ON THE BASE PATHS Lea Hopson’s return for her senior season is plus for the Red Raiders in two ways. It gives Texas Tech a leader in the clubhouse as a team captain and also provides head coach Adrian Gregory some additional speed on the base paths. Hopson, who joined the Tech program last season after transferring from the College of Southern Idaho, finished 21-for-24 in stolen base attempts a year ago, ranking sixth overall in the Big 12. Among conference players returning this season, Hopson ranks third overall in the league only behind Shelby Davis (Oklahoma State) and Brittany Gomez (Iowa State).

The Red Raiders, who finished 35-19 a year ago, have posted 30 or more wins in each of the past five years, tying with Oklahoma and Texas for the longest streak currently in the conference.

Iowa State 0 2 GREGORY COMPILES CHALLENGING NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE In Adrian Gregory’s mind, “to be the best, you have to play the best.” The first-year head coach is going to put that motto to the test this season as Texas Tech significantly bolstered its non-conference schedule with games scheduled against four opponents in the preseason top-25 rankings. The Red Raiders will face No. 18 Nebraska early in the year on Feb. 7 before turning around two weeks later to face No. 25 DePaul twice on Feb. 20-22. Tech will also host No. 21 Tulsa for a pair of games on March 13-14 before closing non-conference play at No. 11 Washington, a NCAA Women’s College World Series participant a year ago. Including Big 12 games, the Red Raiders will face a total of nine opponents this season who advanced to a NCAA Regional a year ago.

RED RAIDERS SELECTED TO FACE TEXAS ON FOX SPORTS NET The April 25 softball game between Texas Tech and Texas at Rocky Johnson Field will air regionally on FOX Sports Net, the Big 12 Conference announced prior to the season. This is believed to be FSN’s first trip to Lubbock for a softball game since the network began covering the sport several years ago. The Red Raiders are no stranger to television coverage, though, with previous appearances on both FSN and ESPN. FSN also announced it will carry the April 18 game between Oklahoma and Baylor in Norman. The rest of the Big 12 television schedule will be announced Tuesday afternoon when ESPN releases its television picks for the entire 2015 season.

SCHWIRTLICH JOINS RED RAIDER ROSTER AT SEMESTER Texas Tech head coach Adrian Gregory announced prior to the season that former All-Southland Conference selection Kirsten Schwirtlich has joined the Red Raider softball program for the start of preseason practices. Schwirtlich, the 2013 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year, will be forced to sit out the 2015 season due to NCAA transfer rules after arriving at Tech following a two-year career at Houston Baptist. The Corpus Christi, Texas native earned All-Southland Conference second team honors as a freshman at Houston Baptist in 2013 and then first team accolades the following year. She was also a third-team NFCA All-Region selection as a sophomore as well. Her transfer will give Gregory additional depth in the infield both defensively and at the plate. Schwirtlich hit .366 as a freshman in 2013, connecting on a team-leading 10 home runs while driving in 47 runs. She committed only one defensive error that season in over 80 chances as well. Schwirtlich followed up by compiling an impressive .411 average a year ago that once again featured impressive power numbers with nine home runs, 11 doubles, three triples and 38 RBI. She wrapped the season as the Southland Conference leader in batting average and among the league leaders in almost every other offensive category.
