RED RAIDERS HEAD TO MANHATTAN TO FACE KANSAS STATE
Texas Tech will look to repeat its solid play from a year ago against Kansas State Saturday evening when the Red Raiders travel to Manhattan, Kan., to face the Wildcats at 7 p.m. inside Ahearn Field House. The Red Raiders, who defeated the then 20th-ranked Wildcats in the final match between the two schools last year, enter this weekend 8-13 overall and 1-5 so far in Big 12 play while Kansas State is 13-5 overall and 1-4 in league action.
AROUND THE NET • Texas Tech will be aiming for its first road victory over Kansas State since 2004 when the Red Raiders claimed a 3-2 inside
Ahearn Field House. That is Tech’s only win all-time in the Little Apple as Kansas State is 16-1 against the Red Raiders at home. • The Red Raiders came close to ending their losing woes in Manhattan a year ago, taking the Wildcats to five sets before eventually falling in the final frame. Texas Tech was forced to rally from two-sets down to extend the match before Kansas State recovered in time to win the final set, 15-9, thanks to a 6-0 run to close the match. • Texas Tech rebounded later in the year to defeat the Wildcats, 3-1, on Nov. 17 at the United Spirit Arena. The victory over the 20th-ranked Wildcats marked Tech’s first over a top-25 team since topping another No. 20 Kansas State squad on Nov. 20, 2004, in Manhattan. • Texas Tech’s victory in the season finale last year snapped a 15-match losing streak to Kansas State, which has still won 21 of the previous 23 contests between the two schools. • The Red Raiders are coming off a 3-0 sweep at the hands of No. 23 Kansas this past Wednesday night at the United Spirit Arena. The Jayhawks erased a 19-12 Red Raider lead in the second set to eventually head in the intermission with a two-set lead, setting up the sweep. • Kansas State was idle Wednesday night but heads into this weekend looking to end its two-match losing streak as the Wildcats fell to both Iowa State and Oklahoma last week. • The Wildcats boast one of the more experienced rosters in the Big 12, featuring six seniors, including their leader in the middle Kaitlynn Pelger. On the other side of the net, Texas Tech has just one senior in Aubree Piper to go along with 13 underclassmen, which is tied for the most in the Big 12 with TCU. • The Red Raiders found success in their last road trip a week ago when Texas Tech held on to defeat TCU, 3-2, in Fort Worth. It was Tech’s first Big 12 Conference victory of the year and its first in five sets over a league foe on the road since edging Colorado on Nov. 30, 2010, in Boulder.
