RED RAIDERS RETURN TO THE ROAD FOR FINAL TIME IN 2013

Texas Tech will make its final road trip of the season Saturday when the Red Raiders travel to Lawrence, Kan. for a 1 p.m. first serve against the Kansas Jayhawks at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center. Saturday will be Kansas’ Senior Day as seven Jayhawks will be recognized prior to the match. Kansas comes into the weekend 21-6 overall and 11-3 in Big 12 Conference play while the Red Raiders are currently 9-21 on the year and 2-12 in league action.

AROUND THE NET • The Oklahoma match concludes a challenging final stretch of the season for the Red Raiders, who close the year against

three of the Big 12’s top-four teams in the conference standings over the final four matches. Texas Tech fell to top-ranked Texas in straight sets last Saturday and then dropped a 3-1 decision this past Wednesday against Oklahoma.

• The Red Raiders will be looking to spoil Senior Day for Kansas while also attempting to snap a five-match losing streak to the Jayhawks. Kansas is 20-16 all-time against the Red Raiders and 11-7 when playing in Lawrence.

• Texas Tech has not closed out its road schedule with a win since traveling to Norman, Okla. and handing Oklahoma a 3-0 sweep on Nov. 28, 1998. The Red Raiders are 3-9 on the road this season with its lone Big 12 victory away from home coming on Oct. 12 in a five-set thriller at TCU. • A Texas Tech victory on Saturday would give the Red Raiders multiple Big 12 road wins for the first time since 2006. Tech defeated both Texas A&M and Kansas in five sets that year en route to finishing 5-15 in league play.

• The Red Raiders are looking for their first win in Lawrence since pulling off a 3-1 victory on Sept. 27, 2006, in what eventually turned into a season sweep of the Jayhawks. Kansas has won 12 of the last 13 contests since that season.

• Kansas is coming off an impressive 3-1 victory over No. 24 Iowa State this past Wednesday night, which marked the Jayhawks’ first win in Ames since the 2004 season.

• Saturday’s match will mark the fifth time this season where the Red Raiders have faced a top-25 team as Texas Tech is 0-4 so far in those matches. Tech has not gone on the road and topped a ranked opponent since scoring a 3-2 victory over No. 24 Kansas State on Nov. 20, 2004, in Manhattan.

• The Red Raiders witnessed history being made this past Wednesday as junior libero Rachel Brummitt recorded a Texas Tech and Big 12 Conference record 36 digs in a 3-1 loss to Oklahoma. The performance snapped the school and conference four-set records and also matched the Tech overall single-match mark as well. Brummitt is averaging 5.22 digs per set in three career matches against Kansas.

Flora will also take part in a weekly press conference every Monday in the Masked Rider Room in the south end of Jones AT&T Stadium.

2013 Texas Tech Volleyball TEXAS TECH AND KANSAS - THE SERIES

Saturday’s match will mark the 37th all-time meeting between Texas Tech and Kansas as the two schools had met only once prior to joining the Big 12 Conference in 1996. Thanks, thanks in part to a five-match winning streak over the Red Raiders, controls a 20-16 advantage in the all-time series, including an 11-7 mark in matches played in Lawrence. The Red Raiders have not won in Lawrence since pulling off a 3-1 victory on Sept. 27, 2006, in what eventually turned into a season sweep of the Jayhawks. Since then, Kansas has won 12 of the last 13 contests, including a 3-0 sweep on Oct. 16 earlier this year in Lubbock. Tech’s lone win during that span came on Oct. 2, 2010, when the Red Raiders claimed a 3-2 victory at home.

BRUMMITT DOES IT AGAIN WITH 36 DIGS AGAINST OKLAHOMA

The legacy that Rachel Brummitt continues to build at Texas Tech as the junior libero added another story Wednesday evening when the junior libero recorded a career-high 36 digs against Oklahoma. The performance snapped the Texas Tech and Big 12 Conference records for digs in a four-set match and also matched the Tech record for total digs as well. Brummitt broke Ann Romjue’s previous school record of 33 digs from Nov. 17, 2002, against Texas A&M. Romjue also owns the total digs school record as she recorded 36 against the Aggies once again, this time coming two years prior on Nov. 18, 2000.

Texas A&M’s Erin Gibson previously owned the Big 12 four-set record with 35 digs against Colorado on Sept. 23, 2000. It was the second 30-dig performance so far in Brummitt’s career at Tech as she also recorded 34 in a five-set victory over Houston Baptist on Sept. 14 last year at the Rice Invitational.

DAVID WITH 35 KILLS IN LAST TWO MATCHES

Breeann David enters this weekend having totaled 35 kills in Texas Tech’s last two matches, including 22 this past Wednesday against Oklahoma. The performance left David just one kill off her career high of 23 that was set on Sept. 17 this year at Texas State. David also totaled 13 kills last Saturday in a straight-set loss to No. 1 Texas. It was the second-highest kill total for a Red Raider in a three-set match this year. David enters this weekend ranked fifth in the Big 12 Conference with a 3.34 kills per set average and fourth with a 4.01 points per set rate.

BRUMMITT SNAPS SINGLE-SEASON DIGS RECORD - AGAIN

For the second-straight year, Rachel Brummitt etched her named in the Texas Tech record book as she snapped her own single-season school digs record on Nov. 6 against Kansas State. The junior libero recorded 21 digs against the Wildcats, moving her season total to 520 at the time which is 10 more than her record-breaking mark from the 2012 campaign. Brummitt, who now owns the highest two dig total in single-season history, currently ranks second in the Big 12 Conference with a 5.18 digs per set average that is nearly a full dig more than her 2012 average. The Plano, Texas native has finished with 20 or more digs 15 times already this year, including a season-high 36 digs this past Wednesday against Oklahoma. She has been in double digits for digs in all but two of Tech’s matches this season as well.

BRUMMITT SURPASSES THE 1,000 CAREER DIGS MARK

Rachel Brummitt’s legacy from this season will not just be felt in the Texas Tech single-season record book, though, after she surpassed the 1,000 career dig mark on Nov. 2 at West Virginia. With her record-setting 36 digs against Oklahoma, Brummitt increased her career total to 1,075 entering this weekend. She is the only Red Raider all-time to reach the 1,000 career digs mark in just two seasons. Brummitt could potentially approach the career top-10 for digs against Kansas as she trails Ginger Carter (1991-94) by just seven digs with two matches still remaining. Lisa Hilgers is the Texas Tech all-time leader in digs as she totaled 1,583 over her four seasons from 1995-98.

SHE CAN SERVE, TOO

Not only is Rachel Brummitt a presence on the back row but she has also delivered this year at the service line. The junior libero has totaled a team-high 30 aces this year, the most for a Red Raider since Caroline Witte also recorded 30 during the 2008 season. Brummitt enters this week ranked eighth in the Big 12 Conference with a 0.27 aces per set average. She is just behind teammate Breeann David in the league rankings as she has compiled a 0.29 average off 22 aces, two of which that came last Wednesday against Oklahoma, while playing in just 77 sets this year. If Brummitt was to record at least one more ace over Texas Tech’s final four matches, it would mark the most for a Red Raider since Jenn Harrell and Emily Ziegler recorded 31 and 52 aces each during the 2006 season.

The Texas Tech volleyball program was rewarded for its work in the classroom Tuesday as a school-record eight Red Raiders were honored on the Academic All-Big 12 teams that were announced by the conference office. Nicole Hragyil led the group of honorees as she was one of seven Red Raiders named to the first team and one of three Big 12 student-athletes to be nominated with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average. It is the second-straight year Hragyil has earned first-team status. Fellow juniors Breeann David and Rachel Brummitt joined Hragyil on the first team, marking David’s second career selection to the first team and the first for Brummitt, who was ineligible as a sophomore after transferring from Radford University. A slew of sophomore completed Tech’s first-team selections as Brianna Grant, Emily Ruetter, Ellen Sorrells and Emily Wright were all recognized for the first time in their respective careers. Mikia Mills also collected second-team honors as well.

ALYSSA YBANEZ SIGNS WITH RED RAIDER VOLLEYBALL

Texas Tech volleyball coach Don Flora announced Monday the signing of Southern California standout Alyssa Ybanez to a National Letter of Intent to join the Red Raiders for the 2014 season. Ybanez spent the previous three seasons at Rim of the World High School, leading the Fighting Scots to the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) finals all three years. Rim ended the 2012 season as the CIF-Southern Section Division 3AA Champions last season, earning Ybanez first team all-state honors. Ybanez was named the 2012 Mountain Valley League Offensive MVP while also picking up All-CIF and all-county accolades as a junior while playing under legendary head coach Dawn Bennet. She garnered first team all-league honors as well for the third-straight season. After playing three seasons at Rim, Ybanez transferred to Los Osos High School prior to the 2013 campaign where she has helped lead the Grizzles to the CIF-SS semifinals which will be played Tuesday night.

PIPER NOTCHES FIRST CAREER DOUBLE-DOUBLE AGAINST K-STATE

Aubree Piper added another accomplishment to her successful career as a Red Raider on Nov. 6 when the lone senior on the Texas Tech roster recorded her first career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs against Kansas State. It was the first double-double for a Red Raider middle blocker since current director of operations Amy Gandy went for 10 kills and 13 digs on Sept. 22, 2007, at Kansas. Piper, who is Tech’s leader with 279 kill on the season, had not previously reached double digits for digs throughout her career, breaking her previous mark of seven from earlier this season against Nevada.

RED RAIDERS KNOCK OFF K-STATE FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR

Led by 23 kills and 11 digs from Jenna Allen, Texas Tech knocked off Kansas State on Nov. 6 for the second-straight year at the United Spirit Arena. Rachel Brummitt also led a group of six Red Raiders to reach double figures for digs as she totaled 21 en route to breaking her own Tech single-season school record from a year ago. The victory marked the first time Tech had defeated K-State in consecutive seasons since picking up four wins from 1998-01. The Red Raiders had also not earned victories in back-to-back years over a Big 12 foe since defeating both Texas A&M and Kansas at least once in both the 2005 and 2006 seasons.

Since returning from a preseason injury on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma, Jenna Allen has shown why Don Flora was excited for the South Carolina transfer to debut in scarlet and black. In her 14 matches so far this season, Allen has totaled 163 kills, averaging a team-best 3.26 per set during that span. She has led the Red Raiders in kills for six of 14 matches, including a career-high 24 in Texas Tech’s 3-2 victory at TCU. The Lewisville, Texas product began her Tech career by connecting on 21 kills against the Sooners, which marked the most for a Red Raider in a Big 12 opener since Kelly Johnson also totaled 21 kills in 2001 against Colorado. Her impressive debut has also focused on the defensive end as well with six double-double performances thanks in part to 125 digs at a 2.50 per set rate. She enters this weekend ranked seventh in the Big 12 in kills per set for Big 12 matches only as well as 10th for points per set.

TEXAS TECH’S JENNA ALLEN STATS FROM THE 2013 SEASON

- Recorded a career-high 24 kills at TCU, the most for a Red Raider this season.

- Marked the most kills for a Red Raider against a Big 12 foe since Amanda Dowdy totaled 34 at Colorado on Nov. 20, 2010.

- Was the second time through six matches with at least 20 kills as she posted 21 in season debut on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma.

RED RAIDERS ONE OF TOP DIGGING TEAMS IN THE COUNTRY

In the midst of an injury-filled season, one thing has remained constant for the Red Raiders - their ability to dig. Led by standout libero Rachel Brummitt, Texas Tech entered this week ranked 57th in the country and third in the Big 12 Conference with a 16.17 digs per set average. Brummitt has been the driving force behind Tech’s defensive success as the junior is averaging 5.18 digs per set, an average that ranks 23rd nationally.. Seven different Red Raiders have posted double-doubles so far this season, led by Emily Ruetter’s 11 which is three more than her total from a year ago. Tech has already totaled 25 double-doubles this year, 11 more from its total from the entire 2012 season.

GRUBB MAKES IMPRESSIVE STARTING DEBUT IN FRONT OF NATIONAL TELEVISION

National television or a hostile road environment could not halt an impressive performance for freshman setter Marguerite Grubb at Iowa State where she made her first career start. Grubb, who had previously been inserted in various situations this year, dished out 38 assists while adding 10 digs for her first career double-double. She is the second Red Raider to record a double-double in her first career start this season, joining Jenna Allen, who did so on Sept. 25 at Oklahoma. Grubb is now one of three Tech freshmen who have started a match this year, joining Katie Daffer and Courtney Ensch.

DAVID STARTS OFF JUNIOR YEAR IN STYLE

For Breeann David, the 2013 season probably couldn’t have gotten off to a better start. The hard-hitting junior has totaled 257 kills in 24 matches this season where she has averaged 3.34 per set, the fifth-highest total currently in the Big 12. The Denver City, Texas native started off the year by posting 10 or more kills in each of the first six matches of the season, the longest streak to start a season since Kelly Johnson did so in the first seven matches of the 2004 season. David, who has missed five matches due to injury and has been limited for parts of Big 12 play, is also fourth in the Big 12 for points per set (4.01) and sixth for aces per set with 0.29 per frame.

SETTING THE PIPE(R)

If the start of the 2013 campaign is any indication, Aubree Piper’s senior season could be a special one. The lone senior on the Texas Tech roster, Piper, who has battled several injuries throughout her career, is Tech’s leading offensive player so far this year, totaling 285 kills at a 2.57 per set rate. With two matches still remaining in the season, Piper has already surpassed her career high in kills as she topped the 156 from her 2012 junior year just a few weeks ago. Her presence in the middle has not just been felt offensively, though, as she has also recorded 67 blocks while adding 16 service aces. The Amarillo, Texas native has posted a team-high .259 attacking percentage that has set her on pace to enter the Tech career record book at the end of the season with a .248 percentage over four seasons.

For as much balance as Texas Tech has shown this year offensively, much of the credit belongs to Emily Ruetter. Tech’s first Canadian volleyball athlete since 2007 heads into this week ranked third in the Big 12 and 94th nationally with a 10.30 assists per set average that is a full assist more than the average from her 2012 freshman season. Ruetter has totaled 1,061 assists through 30 of 32 regular season matches, which will now make it difficult for her to potentially become just the fifth Red Raider setter to record more than 1,200 assists. No Tech setter has reached the mark since Laura Grote in 2003 when she dished out 1,276 assists. Ruetter, who has also recorded 12 service aces and 29 blocks, is Tech’s first Canadian-born player since current director of volleyball operations Amy Gandy (2004-07).

WRIGHT STEPS UP IN TRIP TO INCARNATE WORD, TEXAS STATE

Faced with a depleted bench, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora turned to sophomore Emily Wright to fill a void on the outside as the usual defensive specialist turned into a six-rotation player in both matches against Incarnate Word and Texas State. The effort did not go unnoticed, either, as Wright recorded her first career double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs Monday against the Cardinals before coming back the next night to post a career-high 14 digs against Texas State. The Cypress, Texas native returned to being a full-time defensive specialist last week at Oklahoma.

MILLS, BRUMMITT NAMED TO WILDCAT INVITATIONAL ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Rachel Brummitt and Mikia Mills also earned a selection to the Wildcat Invitational all-tournament team after the two juniors helped lead the Red Raiders to a 3-1 showing in the event. Brummitt totaled a team-high 75 digs from the back row, averaging 5.36 per set which ranks third in the Big 12 after one weekend. She ended the tournament with a match-high 26 digs against host Weber State, marking the ninth time in her Tech career where she has reached the 20-dig mark. Mills, meanwhile, connected on 39 kills, second-most on the team, while adding nine digs and 11 blocks to collect her first alltournament honor of her career. The middle blocker delivered 25 kills over the final two matches, including a career-high 13 in Tech’s four-set victory over Grand Canyon. Teammate Breeann David shared Most Valuable Player honors as well.

FLORA PICKS UP CAREER WIN NO. 300 ON OPENING WEEKEND

Texas Tech head coach Don Flora earned his 300th career victory at the collegiate level during opening weekend when the Red Raiders dropped Grand Canyon in four sets at the Wildcat invitational. The Red Raiders are now 9-18 on the year, improving Flora’s overall record to 307-112 in 13-plus seasons at both the University of La Verne in California as well as Texas Tech.

Flora, arguably one of the winningest active coaches at the Division-I level, led Tech to 29 victories over his first two seasons after inheriting a program that totaled just 30 wins in the five seasons prior to his arrival. The California native currently ranks tied for fifth among Big 12 Conference coaches in career victories, trailing only Ray Bechard (Kansas), Jerritt Elliott (Texas) and Jim Barnes (Baylor) and Santiago Restrepo (Oklahoma). All four coaches have longer career tenures than Flora, who arrived in Lubbock after two seasons as an assistant at New Mexico State and 11 years as the head coach of his alma mater in La Verne where he amassed a 269-59 record (.820 winning percentage) and led the Leopards to the 2001 NCAA Division III National Championship.

ENSCH MAKES IMPRESSIVE DEBUT IN UTAH

Texas Tech freshman Courtney Ensch made what seemed to be a smooth transition to collegiate volleyball at the Wildcat Invitational as she connected on 26 kills from the right side while also adding eight digs and five blocks. Ensch, who arrived at Tech from Southlake Carroll High School, had one of the most accurate performances for a Red Raider in recent memory against Grand Canyon as she recorded 12 kills off just 19 attempts. Ensch had only two hitting errors in the match for a .526 hitting percentage, which was the highest for a Red Raider since Lydia McKay totaled the same average on Sept. 14 last year against Houston Baptist. Ensch closed the weekend hitting .327 over 13 sets, the second-highest percentage on the team.

WHAT CAN BRUMMITT DO NEXT FOR TECH?

After a record-breaking inaugural season in scarlet and black, the best question pertaining to Rachel Brummitt might just be what can she do next? The junior libero shattered the Tech single-season record in 2012 with 510 digs from the back row, finishing with 62 more than previous record holder Melissa McGehee (2000). The Plano, Texas native wrapped the 2012 season ranked fourth in the Big 12 for digs per set (4.32), trailing only Kristin Hahn (Iowa State), Brianne Riley (Kansas) and Maria Fernanda (Oklahoma). A similar, if not better, performance this year would place Brummitt near the top 10 on the Tech career chart as well as Ginger Carter currently sits in 10th place with 1,092 digs from the 1991-94 seasons. Lisa Hilgers owns the Tech career record for digs after totaling 1,583 from 1995-98 that also ranks ninth in Big 12 history entering the 2013 season.

THE DENVER CITY HAMMER

Not shy from coining nicknames, Texas Tech head coach Don Flora has long referred to junior outside hitter Breeann David as the “Denver City Hammer.” Named for both her hometown of nearby Denver City, Texas, as well as her hard-hitting ability, David enters her junior season as one of Tech’s key offensive weapons after she led the team with a 2.77 kills per set average a year ago. David, a six-rotation player normally, totaled 213 digs in 2012 despite missing six matches due to an ankle injury that sidelined her early into Big 12 play. David, who comes from a family of Texas Tech athletes, has also posted 239 digs and 135 blocks over her first two seasons in scarlet and black. Her father, Stan David, was a standout football player for the Red Raiders and eventual 1984 NFL Draft selection by the Buffalo Bills. Her mother, Megan David (formerly McGuire), also starred on the volleyball team while at Tech where she still ranks in the top 10 in most career blocking categories. Her younger brother, Clancy David, is also a walk-on football team currently at Tech.

HINNEBURG NAMED BIG 12 PRESEASON CO-FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR

Texas Tech freshman Victoria Hinneburg was named the Big 12 Preseason Co-Freshman of the Year prior to the season, marking the first time a Red Raider has ever garnered the award. Hinneburg, a native of Leipzig, Germany, is just the third Red Raider to earn a conference preseason award, joining Colleen Smith (1999) and Justine Young (2010) who were both named the league’s Newcomer of the Year. One of the top international prospects in the 2013 class, Hinneburg will give Tech plenty of size and ability for the years to come as she is the tallest Red Raider listed on the roster at 6-4. Hinneburg shared the award with Kansas State’s Katie Brand.

DOUGLASS TO SIT OUT 2013 SEASON

Redshirt freshman Lauren Douglass will sit out the 2013 season due to NCAA transfer policy. Douglass, a native of Flower Mound, Texas, transferred to Tech from Ole Miss where she redshirted the 2012 campaign while recovering from injury. She will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the 2014 season.

BIG 12 CONTINUES TO BE AMONG TOP VOLLEYBALL CONFERENCES

The Big 12 will once again be one of the toughest volleyball conferences nationally this season as the league is boosted by preseason favorite and top-ranked Texas, while No. 15 Iowa State and No. 20 Kansas are also ranked in the top-25 of the AVCA preseason poll. Both Oklahoma and Kansas State received votes in the poll as well. The Big 12 has earned five or more bids to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past four seasons with Texas claiming the national title from a year ago.

RED RAIDERS PICKED TO FINISH TIED FOR 7TH IN BIG 12 PRESEASON POLL

Texas Tech was picked to finish tied for seventh in the Big 12 preseason poll that is voted on annually by the conference coaches. It was the highest preseason nod for the Red Raiders since 2001 when Tech was selected to finish sixth in what was then an 11-team league. The Red Raiders 19 points to finish tied for seventh with TCU while West Virginia rounded out the poll in ninth place. Texas was named the preseason favorite as the defending national champions garnered eight of nine first-place votes to sit in front of Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma and Baylor.

TEXAS TECH vs. KANSAS - OCT. 16, 2013 BOX SCORE

LUBBOCK, Texas - Kansas erased a near record-setting performance from Rachel Brummitt Wednesday evening as the 23rd-ranked Jayhawks cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-16, 25-23, 25-16) of Texas Tech at the United Spirit Arena.

The loss prevented Tech (8-13; 1-5) from building on a previous victory over TCU last Saturday as the Red Raiders fell to 8-13 on the year and 1-5 so far in Big 12 play. Kansas, meanwhile, improved to 15-4 overall and 5-1 in league action.

“Kansas was very effective in rallies and was very effective in transition,” Tech head coach Don Flora said. “I have to give them credit. They put some balls away in transition and in crunch time, several things of which we talk about as a program. That’s an area for us to improve upon.”

Brummitt kept the Red Raiders engaged in the match throughout the night as the junior recorded a match-high 24 digs, 15 of which that came in the second set where Tech led 23-18 before Kansas rallied with a 7-0 run to close the set and steal any built momentum away from the Red Raiders.

The performance was another memorable one for Brummitt, who finished just three digs shy of tying her own Tech single-match record for digs in a three-set match. It was her 11th contest this year with at least 20 digs and her most in a three-set match so far this season.

Kansas hit .264 for the match thanks in part to averages over .300 in both the first and third sets. The Jayhawks totaled just 13 attacking errors, nine fewer than the Red Raiders, who wrapped the night hitting just .131 overall.

Sara McClinton led the Jayhawk attack with 13 kills and a .462 hitting percentage, while Caroline Jarmoc and Chelsea Albers added nine and seven kills each as well. Erin McNorton came close to the match’s only double-double as she dished out 35 assists while also recording nine digs.

The Red Raiders found their most success throughout the night in the middle as Aubree Piper and Mikia Mills combined for 18 of Tech’s 38 kills in the match with both hitting over .350 as well.

“We’ve moved Rachel around and tried a few different things defensively to try to get her to touch the ball as much as possible,” Flora said. “In three sets, having 20-plus digs is just tremendous. She’s really special and has done a good job receiving as well. She’s really setting the tone defensively for us right now.”

Playing in Tech’s annual Pink Match, Piper, whose grandmother was one of several breast cancer survivors recognized pregame, was especially efficient with a team-high 11 kills off 24 attacks and no errors.

Mills finished with seven kills and a .357 hitting percentage, while on the outside Jenna Allen connected on eight kills and Breeann David added seven. Emily Ruetter concluded the night with 36 assists to go along with three digs and a block.
