TEXAS TECH HOSTS NO. 23 KANSAS WEDNESDAY IN ANNUAL PINK MATCH
Fresh off its first Big 12 Conference win of the season, Texas Tech returns to the United Spirit Arena Wednesday evening for a 6 p.m. first serve against the 23rd-ranked Kansas Jayhawks. The match, which will air regionally on FOX Sports Southwest Plus, will be Texas Tech’s annual Pink Out as all fans wearing pink will receive free admission. The Red Raiders head into the match 8-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play after knocking off TCU last Saturday in Fort Worth. The Jayhawks, who reentered the top 25 polls this week, are currently 14-4 overall and 4-1 in league action.
AROUND THE NET • Texas Tech heads into Wednesday night’s match looking to win consecutive conference matches for the first time since
2005 when the Red Raiders swept both Oklahoma and Kansas on Sept. 21-28 at the United Spirit Arena. • The Red Raiders are 16-19 all-time against Kansas as the Jayhawks have won the previous five meetings and 11 of the last 12 contests, including a pair of 3-0 sweeps last year. Kansas will be the third top-25 team to face Texas Tech this season. • Texas Tech senior Aubree Piper is the only current Red Raider to ever defeat Kansas. That lone victory came on Oct. 2, 2010, in a close 3-2 win at the United Spirit Arena. Piper played in all five sets that night, totaling 11 kills off 20 attempts while adding three service aces and five blocks. Her .400 attacking percentage was the highest for both teams as well. • Kansas combined for 25 blocks in its two matches a year ago against the Red Raiders, who failed to hit over .100 in either contest. Texas Tech will once again have to work around a powerful KU block again this year as the Jayhawks enter this week ranked 19th nationally, averaging 2.78 blocks per set. • While Kansas has found success blocking this year, Texas Tech has relied on its digging ability as the Red Raiders rank third in the Big 12 and 35th nationally with a 16.26 digs per set average. • Kansas enters this week reeling from its first Big 12 loss of the season last Saturday when the Jayhawks fell, 3-1, to No. 3 Texas in Lawrence. The loss snapped a 10-match winning streak for the Jayhawks, which was the longest run for any conference team this season. • The Red Raiders are coming off a 3-2 victory over TCU last Saturday in Fort Worth which marked Texas Tech’s earliest conference victory in a season since topping Kansas, 3-2, in its fifth league match of the year on Oct. 2, 2010. • Texas Tech had not previously defeated a conference foe in five sets on the road since topping Colorado on Nov. 30, 2010, in Boulder. It was also Tech’s first road win over any Big 12 opponent since dropping West Virginia, 3-1, on Oct. 13 last year in Morgantown.
