RED RAIDERS OPEN BIG 12 PLAY SATURDAY AFTERNOON Following a 13-1 start to its season, Texas Tech opens Big 12 Conference play Saturday afternoon when the Red Raiders battle 16th-ranked Iowa State at 1 p.m. in the United Spirit Arena. TEXAS TECH OFF TO BEST START SINCE 2000 The Red Raiders enter this weekend’s tournament boasting a 13-1 record, marking the program’s best start since the 2000 squad opened the year 16-1 en route to a 24-9 record and trip to the NCAA Tournament. Tech began that season with eight-straight wins before falling to Baylor on Sept. 13 and then followed with seven more wins to start its tournament run. RED RAIDERS RIDING LONGEST WIN STREAK SINCE 1996 Tech boasts a 13-match winning streak entering Saturday’s match, the school’s longest run since 1996 when the Red Raiders won 15-straight to open the season. The school record for consecutive matches won is 25-straight which was done from Sept. 10-Oct. 9, 1976. THE SERIES Despite losing the last nine matches, the Red Raiders still maintain a 20-13 all-time advantage over Iowa State in the series. Tech last beat the Cyclones on Oct. 14, 2006 as the Red Raiders took a 3-2 victory. Iowa State is 7-8 all-time in matches played in Lubbock. LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders return to their non-conference slate Monday evening when they travel to Albuquerque to face the University of New Mexico. Tech resumes its Big 12 slate next Saturday against 25th-ranked Oklahoma. That match is set for a 6:05 p.m. start at the United Spirit Arena. TECH IN BIG 12 OPENERS Tech is just 6-9 all-time in Big 12 openers with its last win coming in 2007 when the Red Raiders dropped Colorado, 3-2, in Lubbock. The Red Raiders are also 3-5 when opening conference play in Lubbock. Tech has faced Iowa State once before to open its conference slate, a 3-0 victory in Ames during the 2002 season. RED RAIDERS OPEN CONFERENCE ATOP THE BIG 12 STANDINGS After a successful start to the season, Tech begins Big 12 action atop the conference standings for the first time since 1997. The Red Raiders, who were also 13-1 at that point, finished the year 23-11 overall, barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament.
