RED RAIDERS CONTINUE ROAD TRIP AT 13TH-RANKED IOWA STATE Texas Tech completes its weeklong road trip Saturday afternoon when the Red Raiders travel to Ames, Iowa to face 13th-ranked Iowa State at 4 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.

THE SERIES Despite 10-straight losses in the series, Texas Tech maintains a 20-14 lead in the overall series that dates back to when the Red Raiders took 16 of the first 17 meetings from 1989 to 2002. Since then, Tech has defeated the Cyclones just four times in 17 attempts with the Red Raiders last victory coming on Oct. 14, 2006 in Lubbock. Tech is 10-6 all-time when playing in Ames but has not won since taking a 3-1 victory on Sept. 25, 2004.

LOOKING AHEAD The Red Raiders return to the United Spirit Arena next Wednesday night to face in-state rival in a 6:30 p.m. first serve. The match is one of two at the USA next week as the Kansas Jayhawks travel to Lubbock for a Saturday (Nov. 12) match. A start time for the Kansas match will not be determined until after television selections are made for next weekend’s football game against Oklahoma State.

IOWA STATE SWEEPS TECH IN PREVIOUS MEETING Iowa State spoiled Tech’s Big 12 opener with the Cyclones’ 3-0 sweep of the Red Raiders on Sept. 24 in Lubbock. The Red Raiders came into league play riding a 13-match winning streak that dated back to its season opener at TCU. The Cyclones quickly changed that, though, as the Red Raiders did not reach the 20-point mark in any of the three sets. Amanda Dowdy led Tech with a team-high 10 kills to go along with 10 digs.

BAYLOR VICTORY MOVES TECH TWO WINS SHY OF FIRST WINNING SEASON SINCE 2001 With its win over Baylor a week ago, Tech is now two wins shy of ensuring its first winning season since 2001 as the Red Raiders have six Big 12 matches remaining along with a non-conference contest at San Jose State. Tech’s 2001 squad finished the year 18-14 en route to earning an NCAA Tournament selection. The Red Raiders will face three nationally-ranked squads over the final month of the season with two of those coming on the road.

FLORA EARNS FIRST BIG 12 VICTORY After eight tries, including two close calls, Don Flora earned his first Big 12 victory when Tech defeated Baylor in five sets last week. The first-year head coach nearly led Tech to victories over No. 25 Oklahoma and Texas A&M earlier in the year before falling in five sets. In his 12 totals seasons as a head coach, Flora is a combined 141-18 during conference matches, boasting an .889 winning percentage.

UNITED SPIRIT ARENA The United Spirit Arena, one of the finest multi-purpose venues in the country, is home to the Texas Tech basketball and volleyball programs. Constructed in 1999, the USA is named in honor of United Supermarkets, who was the project’s major donor. Since its creation, the 15,000 seat arena has hosted some of the top entertainment acts in the country, including George Strait, Brad Paisley, ZZ Top, and numerous others.

MATCH NOTES VAUGHAN ADDS TO WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Tory Vaughan became the third Red Raider to earn a Big 12 weekly award Monday as the junior libero was named the conference defensive player of the week after recording a career-high 31 digs against Baylor. Her dig output marked the most for a Tech player in the rally scoring era (2001-present) and the most since Ann Romjue set the school record with 36 digs against Texas A&M on Nov. 18, 2000.

Vaughan joined Aubree Piper (Defensive on Sept.

6) and Breeann David (Newcomer on Sept. 12) as Tech’s three weekly award winners, the school’s most selections in a single season since 2002.

PIPER ADDS TO OFFENSE SINCE RETURN After missing most of the month of October, Aubree Piper has made quite an impact on the Tech offense since returning to the lineup prior to the Baylor match. In her two matches since then, Piper has totaled 15 kills to go along with seven blocks.

She recorded nine kills Wednesday night at Texas A&M, which was one shy of Amanda Dowdy’s team high.

BAYLOR WIN MOVES TECH UP IN LATEST RPI Tech jumped up 14 spots in the latest ratings percentage index after its victory over Baylor. The Red Raiders went from 103rd overall to 89th on the poll that is used widely for NCAA Tournament selections. The Big 12 Conference ranks only behind the Big 10 in conference strength as the Big 10 boasts nine schools ranked inside the top 60 of the poll compared to eight of nine Big 12 schools. The nexthighest conference is the Pacific-12 with seven schools in the top 60.

TECH STILL AMONG NATIONAL BLOCK LEADERS The Red Raiders remained in the top 10 in the blocking rankings this week as their 2.98 stuffs per set average ranks seventh nationally. Tech leads the conference in the category as well. Mikia Mills is in a tie for 94th nationally with 1.09 blocks per set while Miara Cave has a 1.02 average that is tied for 138th overall.

DOWDY MOVES TO SECOND ALL-TIME IN KILLS Amanda Dowdy took one more step up the Texas Tech record book against Texas A&M, moving to second all-time in career kills early into the second set. The senior now has 1,388 kills over her career after dropping 16 last week against Baylor. She passed Melissa McGehee, who totaled 1,333 kills from 1999-2002. After starting the year ranked fifth in kills, Dowdy is now second in the category as well as career attempts. Only Kelly Johnson stands in her way of moving even further up the school charts as Johnson notched 1,925 career kills and 5,142 attempts during the 2001-04 seasons.

PASS AND SERVE, PASS AND SERVE Tech’s passing and serving ability came back to haunt the Red Raiders at Texas A&M Wednesday night as the Red Raiders surrendered eight aces in the match while also posting one of their own. In addition, Tech recorded seven service errors, giving the Aggies additional points to complete the 3-0 sweep.

The Red Raiders had previously given up only 12 aces over their last three matches, including only three in its previous meeting against the Aggies on Oct. 19.

HUSKEY DELIVERS OFF THE BENCH Brandy Huskey has been one of Tech’s most reliable options off the bench as of late as the sophomore has posted 10 or more digs in three of her last four matches. Huskey finished with a career-high 13 digs against Texas A&M before recording 11 at Kansas and 10 against Baylor. Huskey has played in every set over Tech’s last four matches, normally as a defensive substitute for Miara Cave on the back row.

PODRAZA ADDING TO THE TECH ATTACK Seeking an additional arm for the Tech attack, Don Flora has gone to freshman Sam Podraza more over the last four matches where the California native has delivered 13 kills combined along with 12 blocks.

DOWDY NOT JUST AN OFFENSIVE PLAYER If Amanda Dowdy has proved one thing this season, it would be that her impact isn’t only felt on the attack. The senior is Tech’s leader in kills and trails only Tory Vaughan for the team high in digs as well. One of the Big 12’s top performers in both categories, Dowdy has posted a double-double in 18 of Tech’s 25 matches so far, giving her 32 for her career. She is currently ranked fourth in the conference with 4.03 kills per set and 10th with a 3.36 digs per set ratio.

RANGEL MAKING AN IMPACT ON THE BLOCK Dravon Rangel provided some relief to a Tech front row during the absence of Aubree Piper as the sophomore has 40 blocks during Big 12 play for a 1.38 per set average that is ranked second in the league. Rangel has posted six blocks each in four of her last six matches played with the exceptions being at Texas and against Baylor last week. The Grand Prairie, Texas native is averaging 1.53 blocks per set this season which is easily the highest ratio in the conference.

DAVID COMING ALONG AS OF LATE Despite being one of Tech’s regular go-to options on the attack, Breeann David has stepped up her productivity over the last 10 matches, finishing in double-digits in six of those. The freshman is averaging just over 10 kills per match during that span after dropping 13 against Missouri and 11 on Oct. 19 against Texas A&M.

MATCH NOTES TEXAS TECH RECORD WHEN...

RECORD WATCH: DOWDY CHASING SEVERAL MILESTONES IN 2011 Senior Amanda Dowdy will not only be looking to end her Texas Tech career off on a high note this year, but she will also be chasing several program records.

The Lexington, Texas native entered the year fifth alltime in career kills and sixth in career attacks. Dowdy is only the eighth player in school history to reach 1,000 kills over a career as she recorded 1,041 over her first three seasons.

Dowdy also joined the top 10 last year on the single-season charts as her 424 kills ranked 10th alltime and her 1,286 attempts was sixth all-time. She also set the single-match record for kills a year ago as she finished with 37 against Colorado on Oct. 13 before nearing the feat again against the Buffaloes, WHAT A DIFFERENCE A YEAR MAKES To say that all facets of Tech’s game have improved under head coach Don Flora might be an understatement. The Red Raiders have drastically improved their numbers from a year and are on pace to surpass those totals by the end of the season.

Here’s a breakdown at Tech’s statistical comparison through 21 matches from last year to this season:

Only the eighth player in school history to reach 2,000 assists in a career, Meyers passed Emily Ziegler (2004-07) as she has now dished 2,590 assists during her four seasons. There is a significant gap between Meyers and Sheila Solomon (198790) for fifth all-time as Solomon totaled 3,307 assists during the sideout scoring era.

OPENING SET A KEY FOR TECH The Red Raiders have found success this season when opening the match with a first-set victory as Tech is 14-2 when doing so. Where Tech has struggled is overcoming an early deficit as the Red Raiders are only 1-7 when dropping the opening set.

FLORA MAKING QUICK CHANGES TO TECH Prior to his arrival, Texas Tech had only 11 wins over its last three seasons. Don Flora surpassed that total in mid-September. Now, the first-year head coach is aiming to put Tech in the midst of the Big 12 race as the Red Raiders have only won three conference matches during the past three years.

The run was Tech’s longest since opening the 1998 season with eight-straight sweeps. u Texas Tech’s win over UT-Arlington marked the program’s third tournament title of the season, a feat that had not been previously accomplished since the 2000 season. u Tech has also held four of its opponents to a negative hitting percentage, which prior to the year had not been accomplished since facing Northwestern State on Sept. 2, 2010.

TECH AMONG TOP 100 IN FIRST RPI POLL Tech was among the top 100 schools listed in the inaugural ratings percentage index poll released by the NCAA. The Red Raiders were picked 93rd overall, a step up from previous seasons when Tech would not have been among the top 100 ranked. Tech moved down 10 spots to 103rd overall in this week’s poll.

MATCH NOTES TECH FACES TOUGH START TO BIG 12 PLAY The Red Raiders had a rough start to Big 12 play over the last few weeks as Tech fell to 16th-ranked Iowa State on Sept. 24 and then No. 25 Oklahoma on Oct. 1. Tech was a point away from defeating the Sooners as the Red Raiders failed to convert on two match points, allowing OU to eventually make a comeback and escape with the win. Baylor and Kansas State kept Tech’s struggles going as the Red Raiders were swept in both matches.

VAUGHAN SNAPS CAREER HIGH Tory Vaughan snapped her career high in digs against Oklahoma, totaling 26 over five sets. Her previous high had been the 21 digs she notched against Morehead State in the finale of the Texas Tech Invitational. It marked the third time Vaughan had broken the 20-dig barrier this season.

RED RAIDERS SCORE COME-FROM-BEHIND WIN Tech’s come-from-behind win over New Mexico marked the second time this season the Red Raiders had overcome a deficit on the road. After winning the first set, Tech dropped the next two games before rallying to win the final two in the Red Raiders’ first five-set match of the year. Tech had previously overcome an early one-set deficit to defeat North Texas on Sept. 19 in Denton.

NEW MEXICO WIN BOOSTS TECH’S RKPI Tech’s win over New Mexico moved the Red Raiders up 13 spots in the Richard Kern Percentage Index (RKPI), which is similar to the RPI used by the NCAA. The Red Raiders came into the match ranked 108 out of 327 schools. The win was Tech’s second over a top 100 opponent as Morehead State came into the week ranked 83rd, 10 spots behind New Mexico.

RANGEL STEPS UP AT NEW MEXICO Dravon Rangel not only moved back into the starting lineup at New Mexico, but she also played a huge part in Tech’s 3-2 victory. The sophomore, who was starting in place of Aubree Piper, delivered a school-record 14 block assists in the match, breaking the previous single-match record of 11 that was last set by current director of operations Amy Gandy on Nov. 15, 2006 against Iowa State.

RED RAIDERS BREAK BLOCKING MILESTONE Tech snapped a 19-year-old school record at New Mexico with 37 block assists against the Lobos, surpassing the previous milestone of 36 that was set against Utah State on Sept. 10, 1982. The Red Raiders finished with a season-high 19.5 blocks in the match as opposed to New Mexico’s six total.

IOWA STATE SNAPS TECH’S WINNING STREAK Iowa State snapped the Red Raiders’ 13-match winning streak with a 3-0 victory in Tech’s Big 12 opener. The loss ended Tech’s longest run since the 1996 season where the Red Raiders got off to a 15-0 start. Tech, which had not lost a match since the season opener at TCU, dropped its fourth-straight Big 12 opener, falling to 6-10 in conference openers.

TECH OPENS CONFERENCE ATOP STANDINGS After a successful start to the season, Tech began Big 12 action atop the conference standings for the first time since 1997 with a 13-1 record. The Red Raiders, who were also 13-1 at that point, finished the 1997 season 23-11 overall, barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament.

FLORA JOINS ELITE COMPANY IN RECORD BOOK When then athletics director Gerald Meyers hired Don Flora last January, he knew he was getting a proven head coach with an impressive record. Flora has proved Meyers’ pick to be a solid choice as Tech is 13-1 on the year, the best record through 14 matches for a first-year head coach in school history.

The California native passed Donna Martin, who led Tech to a 12-2 start in 1985 as the Red Raiders eventually ended the year 19-9 overall. Flora entered the year as one of the winningest coaches all-time in NCAA history after compiling a 269-59 record over 11 seasons at the University of La Verne in California.

SENIORS ENJOYING FINAL SEASON AT TECH Seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers have to be enjoying their final season in a Texas Tech uniform. The duo won a combined 11 games over their first three seasons, one less than Tech’s total so far this year. Don Flora marked the fourth head coach to lead the duo as the co-captains started their careers under Nancy Todd in 2008. Now, Dowdy and Meyers are off to one of the best seasons in school history while both are also climbing the Tech record book in several categories.

TEXAS TECH BOOSTS OFFENSE WITH SERVE One of Don Flora’s areas of improvement early in the season was Tech’s serving ability after the Red Raiders posted double-digit error numbers twice in their first three matches. Tech has used the serve to its advantage as the Red Raiders have totaled 100 aces so far, nearly twice as many than the 2010 season.

TEXAS TECH INVITATIONAL MARKS A FIRST The Red Raiders’ tournament win last weekend at the Texas Tech Invitational was the program’s first since it claimed the North Texas Tournament to start the 2008 season. Tech had also not won its own home tournament since 2004 when the Red Raiders defeated UTPA, UTEP, and North Texas as part of the Red Raider Classic.

DAVID ADDS TO WEEKLY AWARD WINNERS Breeann David became the second Texas Tech player to earn a Big 12 weekly award this week as she was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Monday. David joins teammate Aubree Piper as a weekly award winner after Piper earned Defensive Player of the Week honors a week ago. It marked the first time in school history that two different players had been honored in the same season.

PIPER HONORED ON BIG 12 WEEKLY AWARDS Prior to Tuesday night’s match at Texas-Pan American, sophomore Aubree Piper was named the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for her performance during the Texas Tech Invitational.

Piper finished with 21 blocks to go along with 15 kills on the weekend, matching her single-game highs for total blocks and block assists in the process. No Tech player had been previously honored with a Big 12 weekly award since Amanda Dowdy was named the conference Rookie of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008.

DOWDY LEADS TECH ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Amanda Dowdy was one of three Red Raiders named to the Texas Tech Invitational all-tournament team as the senior picked up most valuable player honors.

Fellow senior Karlyn Meyers and junior Miara Cave were also honored as the Red Raiders claimed the tournament title following a 3-0 weekend.

DOWDY, CAVE MAKE ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM Texas Tech senior Amanda Dowdy and junior Miara Cave were both named to the TCU Invitational AllTournament team after leading the Red Raiders to a second-place showing.

MORE BALANCE, BETTER RESULTS If there was one consistent variable in Tech’s opening weekend, it would be that the Red Raiders have more balance on offense. The trio of Amanda Dowdy, Miara Cave, and Breeann David all had at least 10 kills each in both of the first two matches.

In the process, Tech’s hitting percentage rose to a .256 average over three matches, including a .388 mark against UConn, the Red Raiders’ highest attacking percentage since defeating South Florida in three sets on Sept. 9, 2006.

DAVID JOINS ELITE COMPANY Since the Red Raiders joined the Big 12 in 1996, no Tech freshman has begun her career with doubledigit kill figures in back-to-back matches. That is until Breeann David. The Denver City product finished with 11 kills against TCU and followed with 14 the following day against UConn. David finished with a .500 hitting percentage against UConn as she was 14-for-24 on the attack en route to posting Tech’s highest individual hitting percentage since Barbara Conceicao recorded a .526 average on Sept. 11, 2009 against Gonzaga.

DOWDY NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-BIG 12 Senior Amanda Dowdy was recognized prior to the season as Tech’s only selection on the Preseason All-Big 12 team. Dowdy was among the top offensive players in the conference a year ago en route to be selected to the All-Big 12 first team following the season. This marks the second-straight season Dowdy has been honored on the preseason and first as a unanimous selection.

MEYERS ADDS EXPERIENCE AT SETTER With such a young roster, the Red Raiders will rely on senior setter Karlyn Meyers at the setter position. A two-year starter, Meyers is one of the most-accomplished setters in school history as she is already among the top 10 all-time in career assists and assists per set average.

RED RAIDERS WILL BE YOUNG Texas Tech will be one of the younger teams in the country as 15 of the program’s 21 players are listed as either a freshman or sophomore. Two of the squad’s six upperclassmen, juniors Ciara Gibson and Kelly Chiffer, will both redshirt this season, giving the Red Raiders only four upperclassmen on the court - seniors Amanda Dowdy and Karlyn Meyers and juniors Miara Cave and Tory Vaughan.

FLORA ADDS VETERAN ASSISTANT IN CORONEL One of the first things Don Flora said he wanted once he arrived at Texas Tech was to hire another proven assistant. He got his wish when Jojit Coronel compiled the Tech staff. Coronel, the head coach at George Washington the previous 10 seasons, joins fellow assistant Beth Falls and director of operations Amy Gandy.

DAVID LOOKS TO FOLLOW FAMILY LEGACY Breeann David’s commitment to Texas Tech last spring not only gave the program one of the top recruits in the country, but it continued a family legacy. David’s mother, the former Megan McGuire, was a standout volleyball athlete for Tech in the 1980s while her father, Stan David, starred on the football team during the same time before being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the 1984 NFL Draft. Both her mother and aunt, Susan Kelly McGuire, are still among the top 10 in school history of every blocking category. David’s older sister, Leah David, is also the team’s student manager.

RED RAIDERS BOAST 12 NEWCOMERS Soon after his hire, Don Flora immediately hit the recruiting trail, traveling all over the country trying to build the Tech roster. The hard work paid off as the Red Raiders boast 12 newcomers to this year’s roster, including nine high school prospects.

RANGEL BACK IN ACTION AFTER INJURY Dravon Rangel will be back in action for the first time in almost a year this week as the redshirt sophomore missed almost all of last season with a knee injury. Rangel played in two matches of the season-opening Rice Tournament before receiving a medical redshirt at the conclusion of the season.

Rangel will be making her return nearly 15 minutes from her hometown of Grand Prairie.

RED RAIDERS ADD SETTER TRANSFER, HRAGYIL Tech added depth to the setter position last spring as Nicole Hragyil became the first commitment of the Don Flora era, joining the program at midterm just in time to participate in spring drills. Hragyil adds depth for the Red Raiders as she will join Brandy Huskey as a backup to Karlyn Meyers. Both Hragyil and Huskey will also see time as a back row specialist.

TECH PICKED TO FINISH NINTH IN BIG 12 PLAY The Red Raiders did not receive the preseason vote of confidence they hoped for as Tech was picked to finish last in the nine-team Big 12 Conference.

Texas was picked to win the conference championship in a vote of the league coaches. Iowa State and Oklahoma followed in a tie for second.

HEAD COACH DON FLORA tory, Flora established a winning culture unmatched by many as the Leopards recorded only one losing season during his tenure - his first season in 1998.

La Verne posted at least 20 wins in nine-straight seasons beginning in 2000 as the Leopards claimed nine-straight Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles. During Flora’s tenure, the Leopards were 140-10 in SCIAC matches, boasting an impressive .933 winning percentage. La Verne posted undefeated 14-0 campaigns in league play five times in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, and 2008.

As the success kept building early in Flora’s tenure, so did the achievements at the national level. In only Flora’s fourth season, the Leopards wrapped a nearperfect 27-1 season with the 2001 NCAA Division III National Title, the second in school history.

The title run earned Flora the Division III National Coach of the Year honor by both the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and Volleyball Magazine. He was also named the AVCA West Region Coach of the Year, an award he was presented three more times in his tenure following the 2003, 2005, and 2008 seasons.

With a national title under his belt, Flora’s success kept rolling as the Leopards eventually posted their first 30-win season in 2003, which began a streak of three-straight seasons where La Verne advanced to the NCAA Final Four. The Leopards posted a schoolrecord 33 wins a season later.

The Leopards posted 27 wins in each of Flora’s final three seasons at the school, which culminated in another national title match appearance in 2008.

Unlike 2001, however, La Verne was topped in the championship, falling to Emory in four sets.

In his spare time, Flora is heavily involved the USA High Performance along with various club circuits and junior development programs in the southwest region and across the nation. His multi-faceted summer camps are among the nation’s finest youth programs and have become a popular event in Lubbock since his arrival.

Flora, a native of Covina, Calif., and his wife, Jeanne, currently reside in Lubbock with their two daughters, Annika and Alexis.

Jeanne Flora is a highly-regarded professor in the field of Family and Interpersonal Communications.

She will continue to teach via video teleconference for New Mexico State where she has worked the past two years.

hrough 11 years as a head coach, Don Flora has become one of the winningest coaches in NCAA history. He hopes to continue that tradition in his first season at Texas Tech after being named the eighth volleyball coach in school history on Jan. 7, 2011.

The match ended up to being Flora’s final one with the Leopards, wrapping a successful tenure that included a 25-8 mark in NCAA Tournament matches.

La Verne wrapped the year ranked in the top 10 nationally for the ninth-consecutive season which had only been done by two other programs during that span.

One of the top coaching prospects in the country following the 2010 season, Flora arrives at Tech with a 269-59 career record during his 11 seasons as the head coach at the University of La Verne in California.

Flora actually got his start in coaching with the La Verne men’s program in 1993, leading the squad for five seasons while also assisting with the women’s program that was under renowned coach Jim Paschal at that time. He would take over as the head coach of the women’s team prior to the 1998 season.

As if coaching was not enough, Flora was also involved with another significant arm of the athletics department – fundraising. He was named the Assistant Athletics Director in charge of Development in 1994, a position he would hold until 2007.

Entering the 2011 season, Flora currently ranks as the 12th winningest coach all-time among those with 10 years of experience at any level of NCAA play. His .820 career winning percentage is 15th among active coaches with five years of experience and third all-time at the Division III level.

The California native comes to Tech following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at New Mexico State where the Aggies, consistently one of the top programs nationally, compiled a 38-22 record. Flora was responsible for recruiting activities, practice instruction and game strategy and was involved in the daily development of the overall program under head coach Mike Jordan.

The desire to eventually become a head coach at the Division I level was enticing enough for Flora to leave his alma mater at La Verne following the 2008 season. Already the winningest coach in school his-

Flora graduated with a degree in social sciences from La Verne in 1990 before later returning to the classroom to earn his masters in the Leadership and Management curriculum.
