RED RAIDERS HOST NO. 25 IOWA STATE IN BIG 12 HOME OPENER
Texas Tech hosts its Big 12 home opener Wednesday night as the Red Raiders welcome 25th-ranked Iowa State for a 6 p.m. first serve at the United Spirit Arena. The match will air regionally on FOX Sports Southwest with Robert Giovannetti calling the action and Andy Penney providing the color commentary. Courtney Davis will also be roaming the sidelines as well for the Texas Tech TV broadcast. The match will also be streamed live on TexasTech.TV for viewers outside the FOX Sports Southwest coverage area.
AROUND THE NET • Texas Tech returns to the United Spirit Arena Wednesday evening for the first time since Sept. 14 as the Red Raiders trav-
eled to Incarnate Word and Texas State on Sept. 16-17 before opening Big 12 play at Oklahoma last Wednesday (Sept. 25). • The Red Raiders are coming off their second-straight bye weekend where most of the Big 12 either opened or continued conference play. Wednesday night’s match will mark just Texas Tech’s fourth match over the last 17 days. • Iowa State will be the first ranked opponent for the Red Raiders this year as the Cyclones enter this week ranked 25th nationally in the latest AVCA poll. Texas Tech previously faced Oklahoma last Wednesday when the Sooners were receiving votes in the poll. • Texas Tech will aim Wednesday to recreate the same magic it had the last time the Red Raiders hosted a ranked opponent in the United Spirit Arena which resulted in a 3-1 victory over No. 20 Kansas State on Nov. 17 last year. The K-State victory marked Tech’s first over a ranked opponent since late in the 2004 season. • The Cyclones are coming off a 3-0 sweep of Baylor last Saturday to open Big 12 play at Hilton Coliseum in Ames. The victory improved Iowa State to 7-4 on the season and 1-0 so far in league action. • The Red Raiders, meanwhile, suffered a 3-1 setback in their Big 12 opener last Wednesday at Oklahoma. Jenna Allen led Texas Tech with 21 kills and 15 digs in her first-ever match in scarlet and black. Breeann David also connected on 18 kills while recording a career-high 21 digs in the loss. • The Red Raiders will be looking to snap a 13-match losing streak to the Cyclones on Wednesday evening as Texas Tech’s last win in the series came on Oct. 14, 2006, in a five-set victory at the United Spirit Arena. Despite the losing streak, Tech still controls a 20-17 all-time advantage in the series against Iowa State. • Texas Tech will also be looking to win its first Big 12 home opener since 2007 as the Red Raiders are just 5-12 all-time when opening their home conference slate.
