• No. 23 Texas Tech returns to the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic in Houston for the ninth time in program history this weekend. The three-day event, hosted at Minute Maid Park, begins at 12 p.m. Friday when the Red Raiders battle No. 9 Houston. Tech will also face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette in a noon first pitch on Saturday before closing the weekend with an 11 a.m. start Sunday against No. 18 Arkansas.

• Texas Tech is 7-17 all-time in the Houston College Classic as the Red Raiders are in the field for the first time since the 2014 season.

• Texas Tech finished 1-2 in its last appearance at the Houston College Classic in 2014, falling to Houston (9-0) and Sam Houston State (10-6) before ending the weekend with a 2-1 victory over No. 10 Rice.

• The Red Raiders have faced Houston in seven of their previous eight appearances in the Houston College Classic as the Cougars are 5-2 all-time against Tech in the event.

TEXAS TECH AT THE SHRINERS HOSPITALS FOR CHILDREN COLLEGE CLASSIC - MINUTE MAID PARK • Texas Tech will be making its ninth all-time appearance this weekend at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic (formerly known as the Houston College Classic).

• The Red Raiders are 7-17 all-time in the event with wins in 2001 (TCU), 2002 (TCU), a pair of victories in 2004 (Houston, Ohio State), 2008 (Tennessee), 2012 (Houston) and 2014 (No. 10 Rice).

• This will be the first time Texas Tech has faced a ranked opponent in all three games of the event.

• This will be the seventh-consecutive trip the Houston College Classic where the Red Raiders will face at least one top-10 nationally-ranked opponent. The Red Raiders are a combined 1-8 in those games with the lone win coming in 2014 against No. 10 Rice (2-1).

• This will be the third time Texas Tech has faced a pair of top-10 teams during the event as the Red Raiders previously battled No. 4 Arkansas and No. 4 Rice in 2012 and then No. 7 TCU and No. 9 Rice in 2010.

• Texas Tech is 2-5 all-time against Houston during the event as the Red Raiders claimed victories in 2012 (10-4) and 2004 (12-7, 11 innings). The Red Raiders have faced Houston in seven of their eight previous appearances in the event. Houston was not ranked in any of those previous seven meetings.

• The Red Raiders have met Louisiana-Lafayette just once previously in the Houston College Classic as the Rajin Cajuns escaped with a 4-3 victory in 2002.

INSIDE THE LOUISIANA-LAFAYETTE SERIES • Texas Tech and Louisiana-Lafayette will be meeting for the fifth time in program history and the first time since 2008 on Saturday.

• Louisiana-Lafayette leads the all-time series against the Red Raiders with a 4-1 advantage, which includes a 2-0 mark in neutral site games.

• Texas Tech split a two-game series with Lousiana-Lafayette in 1990 but has dropped both neutral-site games since then at the 2002 Houston College Classic (4-3) and in 2008 at the Roadrunner Classic hosted by UTSA (4-0).

INSIDE THE ARKANSAS SERIES • Texas Tech and its former Southwest Conference rival Arkansas will meet for the 58th time on the baseball diamond on Sunday. The Razorbacks control a 43-14 all-time advantage in the series that dates back to 1974.

• The Red Raiders have faced the Razorbacks just once since the Southwest Conference folded which came in the 2012 Houston College Classic.

Arkansas claimed a 3-1 victory in that contest.

TEXAS TECH NOTES • This is the eighth-consecutive year where the Red Raiders have won four of their first five games in a season.

• The Houston game will begin a stretch where Texas Tech will play 10 of its next 13 games against opponents currently ranked in the national rankings.

• Texas Tech has scored 47 runs through its first five games of the season, marking the second-straight year where the Red Raiders have scored at least 45 runs through five games.

• Texas Tech has scored 22 of its 47 runs this season with two outs in the inning. The Red Raiders plated nine runs alone with two outs Wednesday night in an 11-6 victory over Sam Houston State.

• Texas Tech has been impressive at the plate with runners in scoring position, hitting .403 overall (27-for-67) in such situations. Cory Raley, Eric Gutierrez and Ryan Long lead the Red Raiders with runners in scoring position as the trio is hitting .667 (4-for-6), .625 (5-for-8) and .500 (4-for8) so far this season.

• The Texas Tech pitching staff, meanwhile, has been effective in limiting opponents with runners on base as opposing offenses are hitting just .187 (14-for-75) this season with runners on base.

• Texas Tech heads into Friday’s opener with a share of the NCAA lead with nine double plays turned this season. The Red Raiders, who turned five double plays on Opening Day alone, are tied with Hawaii for the national lead in games played through Wednesday.

• Through games played Wednesday night, Texas Tech is the Big 12 leader in team batting average (.366), on-base percentage (.455), slugging percentage (.507), runs scored (36), hits (49), doubles (14), RBI (36) and sacrifice flies (5).

• Through the games played on Wednesday night, Texas Tech ranked among the top-10 teams nationally in the following categories: doubles (2nd), sacrifice flies (4th), hits (8th), walks (9th) and runs scored (10th). The Red Raiders are also near the top of the national leaders in on-base percentage (16th), batting average (23rd) and hit-by-pitches (24th).

TEXAS TECH IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS • Texas Tech remained in the national rankings this week as the Red Raiders moved up two spots to No. 23 in the Perfect Game top-25 poll.

• The Red Raiders began the year ranked 25th by Perfect Game and 39th by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. Tech was also receiving votes in the USA Today Coaches’ and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls.

• This is the second-straight year where the Red Raiders have started their season ranked in a preseason poll. It is the first time Texas Tech has appeared in the preseason rankings in consecutive seasons since prior to the 1999-2000 campaigns.

• Texas Tech has posted 40 come-from-behind wins under Tadlock, including two already this season STEPHEN SMITH NAMED BIG 12 PLAYER OF THE WEEK Stephen Smith was named the Big 12 Player of the Week this past Monday after the junior led the Red Raiders to a series win last weekend against Milwaukee. This is the first weekly award for Smith, who hit .571 overall (8-for-14) with seven runs scored, four doubles, five RBI, two stolen bases, a .857 slugging percentage and a .684 on-base percentage. He ended the weekend with at least a share of the Big 12 lead in five categories: hits, runs scored, doubles, total bases and on-base percentage. Smith, who had at least one hit in all four games in the series, is the first Red Raider outfielder to receive Big 12 Player of the Week accolades since Adam Kirsch earned the honor on May 19, 2014.

TURN TWO - RED RAIDERS ONCE AGAIN AMONG NATION’S ELITE IN DOUBLE PLAYS Texas Tech has regularly ranked among the top teams in the country in doubles plays turned under head coach Tim Tadlock. The Red Raiders ranked seventh nationally in Tadlock’s first season in 2013. Tech followed by finishing sixth in 2014 and then 14th in 2015. Just one week into the 2016 season and the Red Raiders are on pace to continue that trend as Tech is tied for the national lead with nine double plays turned this season. The Red Raiders turned five double plays on Opening Day alone, their most ever in a season opener dating back to 1987.

TEXAS TECH TURNS TO FRESHMEN ON THE MOUND EARLY IN THE SEASON • Steven Gingery became the third Red Raider freshman to start on the mound already this season Wednesday night at Sam Houston State. The Huntington Beach, Calif. native joined fellow left-hander Erikson Lanning and right-hander Ty Harpenau after the duo both earned starts last weekend against Milwaukee.

• Tech had not previously started three true freshman within the first five games of a season dating back to the start of the 2001 campaign.

• Gingery is one five Red Raider freshmen pitchers to already appear on the mound this season, joining Lanning, Harpenau, Ryan Shetter and Davis Martin. Shetter made his first career appearance Wednesday night at Sam Houston State.

• Martin earned his first career save in his collegiate debut last Saturday. The freshman relieved Ty Damron and tossed four innings of relief where he allowed just one hit in Texas Tech’s 9-1 victory.

IRON MAN GUTE In his three-plus seasons as a Red Raider, senior first baseman Eric Gutierrez simply does not know the feeling of being left out of the lineup. That’s mainly because it has never happened. Texas Tech head coach Tim Tadlock has penciled the senior onto the lineup card in all 182 games of his Red Raider career, marking the longest active streak in the country. A two-time All-Big 12 first team selection, Gutierrez is the only Red Raider on the 2016 roster to have started in every game of his career.

GUTE CHASING DOWN THE RECORD BOOK DURING SENIOR SEASON Eric Gutierrez will have a chance to leave his name in several spots in the Texas Tech record book following his senior season as he already ranks 10th in program history for career at-bats (639) and games played (177). The Mission, Texas native is also closing in on the career top-10 in several other offensive categories, including RBI (133), total bases (305) and hits (185). It marks the second time in the past three seasons Tech has returned at least seven position starters as the Red Raiders previously brought back eight starters prior to the 2014 campaign.

• In Texas Tech’s group of seven returning position starters, five are seniors with a combined 539 games played over their career. Eric Gutierrez, Tyler Neslony and Zach Davis all feature three years of experience in a Red Raider uniform while Tyler Floyd and Cory Raley both transfered to Tech following successful junior-college careers.

• Texas Tech is tied with Oklahoma State and Baylor for the most position starters returning heading into this season.

• Texas Tech’s group of returners accounted for 219 of the 269 RBI in 2015 (81 percent) as well as 33 of 41 home runs on the year (80 percent).

• The Red Raiders return their top four hitters (minimum of 50 at-bats) by average from the 2015 season in Cory Raley (.350), Eric Gutierrez (.315), Stephen Smith (.291) and Tyler Neslony (.286). That group combined for 23 home runs and 134 RBI during the 2015 season alone.

MOSELEY BECOMES SIXTH RED RAIDER FROM LUBBOCK TO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 1987 Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley - a 2013 graduate of Lubbock Cooper High School - is just the second Red Raider pitcher from Lubbock to earn the Opening Day start in back-to-back seasons since 1987. He joins former Red Raider and current Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis (2009-10) as the only Lubbock natives with multiple Opening Day starts.

RED RAIDERS SCHEDULED TO PLAY 10 GAMES AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS EARLY IN THE SEASON Texas Tech will boast one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country this season as the Red Raiders are slated to play 10 games against ranked opponents early in the season. The Red Raiders will face No. 6 Louisiana-Lafayette, No. 8 Arkansas and No. 12 Houston next weekend during the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic hosted by the Houston Astros. Tech will later face No. 7 Cal State Fullerton in a three-game series at home and then No. 8 California in a four-game set in Berkeley. Dating back to the 1995 season, Tech has never played 10 of its first 17 games in a season against top-25 foes. The previous high was nine games against ranked opponents to start the 2012 season.

Berl Huffman (1961-67)_______________ 80 NEW TURF, VIDEO BOARD HIGHLIGHT IMPROVEMENTS TO RIP GRIFFIN PARK Red Raider fans will see a pair of new additions as they enter Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park this season as Texas Tech installed a new FieldTurf surface in December and then upgraded its video board to the version that previously occupied Jones AT&T Stadium. The nearly $1 million project will provide Tech with one of the largest video boards in college baseball as well as a state-of-the-art playing surface. The screen size on the video board will more than double from 15-by-20 feet on the previous model to 48-by-22 feet. Both projects were funded privately through philanthropic contributions and gifts to The Campaign for Fearless Champions.

SHRINERS COLLEGE CLASSIC | 2016 TEXAS TECH BASEBALL HOTTEST TICKET IN TOWN ... AGAIN After selling out season tickets for the first time in program history prior to 2015 season, Texas Tech fans once again scooped up season tickets in record numbers as Tech sold more than 2,400 season tickets prior to Opening Day. Tech sold roughly 2,500 season tickets in 2015, the most in program history and more than twice its total from 2014. Tech has ranked among the top 31 schools in the nation over the past 18 years in average attendance per game. Tech closed the 2015 season averaging 3,665 fans per game, a figure that ranked 13th nationally and the third highest in program history.

FLOYD EARNS HIS TEXAS TECH DEGREE PRIOR TO SENIOR SEASON Tyler Floyd will enter his senior season with already a degree in hand as the senior graduated this December with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average in the Texas Tech exercise sports science program. Floyd, who started in 46 games at catcher in 2015, was recognized as the highest-ranking graduate in the ESS program as part of the commencement ceremonies. Floyd was honored late in the 2015 season on the Academic All-Big 12 first team where he was the only conference student-athlete nominated with a perfect 4.0 GPA. FIVE RED RAIDERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED IN MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL DRAFT This year’s roster features five Red Raiders have been selected at some point of their career in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft. Tim Tadlock, the 2014 College Baseball Hall of Fame National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the head coach at Texas Tech after taking the Red Raiders to the College World Series in just his second season while winning over 100 games in his tenure.

Tadlock was named head coach of his alma mater on June 8, 2012, becoming the ninth head coach in program history. Tadlock will enter his 24th year in collegiate baseball in 2016. He owns a collegiate career record of 540-203 in 12 years as a head coach with nine seasons at Grayson County College (435-127) and three at Texas Tech (105-76).

Tadlock and the Red Raiders completed the biggest turnaround in school history and the second biggest turnaround in Big 12 history, going from 26 wins in 2013 to 45 wins in 2014. The season culminated with Texas Tech’s first trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Tadlock was named the ABCA Midwest Region Coach of the Year as well as the Skip Bertman National Coach of the Year while guiding the Red Raiders to their best season in school history with a 45-21 overall mark and 14-10 Big 12 record. Tech posted just the sixth 40-win regular season in school history while claiming its first-ever NCAA Regional title at the Coral Gables Regional hosted by No. 3 nationally-ranked Miami (Fla.). Tech won the regional with three wins, two of them coming against Miami on its home field.

Tech finished 31-24 overall in Tadlock’s third season in 2015, marking the first time since 2005-06 where the Red Raiders have posted consecutive 30-win seasons. The Red Raiders completed Big 12 play at 13-11 overall, securing a tie for third place in the conference standings, Tech’s highest finish since the 2004 season. It was also the second-straight season where Tech has finished among the top four in the Big 12 standings, a first for the Red Raiders since the 2001 and 2002 seasons.

Tadlock returned to his alma mater for the 2012 season as the program’s associate head coach and recruiting coordinator following six successful seasons as an assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma. Tadlock produced several of the nation’s top recruiting classes while an assistant coach at Oklahoma, helping lead the Sooners back to the College World Series in 2010, the Sooners first trip to Omaha since 1995.

After beginning his college coaching career as an assistant at Hill College (1993-96) for four seasons, Tadlock became the head coach at Grayson County Junior College, where he led the Vikings to back-to-back National Junior College Athletic Association World Series titles in 1999 and 2000. During his nine seasons at Grayson, Tadlock posted a 435-127 (.774) overall record while being named National Coach of the Year following both title runs (1999-2000).

After a prep career at Denton High School and two years at Hill College, Tadlock was a two-year starting shortstop for the Red Raiders while helping Texas Tech to its first-ever 40-win season as a senior in 1991 (42-18). Tadlock graduated with his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Texas Tech in May 1992. He also earned a master’s degree in education in August 1994 from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Tadlock and his wife, Kelly, have two children, daughter, Chloe (14), and son, Benjamin (12).

Moseley, a catcher during most of his little league and prep career, pitched for the first time as a senior at Lubbock Cooper HS (All-State - 10-2, 1.78 ERA, 111 SO, 78.2 IP).

MOSELEY IN THE HOUSTON COLLEGE CLASSIC Moseley has made one previous appearance in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic as he tossed 1.1 innings of relief in 2014. Moseley earned the save, the second of his career, in Texas Tech’s 2-1 victory over No. 10 Rice to close the tournament. The right-hander did not allow an Owl to reach base in his 1.1 innings as he was effective in striking two of the four hitters he faced.

MOSELEY IN THE MLB DRAFT Moseley chose to attend his hometown school in 2013 after passing up a chance to join the Tampa Bay Rays organization. The Rays selected the right-hander in the 36th round of the 2013 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

MOSELEY CLOSING IN ON 100 CAREER STRIKEOUTS Moseley heads into the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic just one strikeout why of 100 for his career. The right-hander struck out 41 hitters in 2014 before fanning 54 batters during his 2015 sophomore season. He leads all returning Red Raiders in career strikeouts and currently ranks fourth among active Big 12 players in the category.

MOSELEY NAMED OPENING DAY STARTER FOR SECOND-STRAIGHT YEAR Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley received the ball on Opening Day for the second-straight season last Friday against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is just the sixth Red Raider since 1987 to start consecutive Opening Day games, joining the likes of Dominic Moreno (2013-14), Chad Bettis (2009-10), Shane Wright (199899), Mark Brandenburg (1991-92) and Rodney Steph (1989-90).

MOSELEY BECOMES SIXTH RED RAIDER FROM LUBBOCK TO START ON OPENING DAY SINCE 1987 Texas Tech junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Moseley - a 2013 graduate of Lubbock Cooper High School - is just the second Red Raider pitcher from Lubbock to earn the Opening Day start in back-to-back seasons since 1987. He joins former Red Raider and current Colorado Rockies right-hander Chad Bettis (2009-10) as the only Lubbock natives with multiple Opening Day starts.

OPPONENTS STRUGGLE AGAINST MOSELEY Opponents have traditionally struggled against Moseley as the right-hander has held opposing offenses to just a .221 batting average in his first two seasons as a Red Raider.

HARPENAU JOINS BETTIS AS ONLY FRESHMAN SINCE 2001 TO START GAME TWO Texas Tech freshman right-handed pitcher Ty Harpenau joins pretty elusive company this weekend as he will be the first Red Raider freshman pitcher since Chad Bettis in 2008 to start the second game of a season. Bettis tossed six complete innings, allowing two runs (one earned) off three hits, four walks and four strikeouts in a 16-2 rout of Army in a game played in San Antonio. The southpaw has compiled a 3.57 ERA during that span after allowing just 22 earned runs in his 70.2 innings.
