SEASON PROGRAMME 2026-2027 Programm tal-Istaġun 2026-2027

ABOUT TEATRU MANOEL Meqjus bħala wieħed mill-ġojjelli arkitettoniċi li joffru l-Gżejjer Maltin, it-Teatru Manoel jinsab fil-qalba kulturali tal-pajjiż, fil-Belt Valletta. Dan il-primo esempio ta’ arkitettura Barokka ġie mibni mill-Kavallieri ta’ San Ġwann fl-1731 u fetaħ il-bibein tiegħu għall-ewwel darba għallpubbliku fit-19 ta’ Jannar tal-1732. IlGranmastru Fra Antonio Manoel de Vilhena kien responsabbli għallkummissjoni tat-teatru u saħansitra ħallas għall-kostruzzjoni nnifisha. Qabel ma nbena t-teatru, serati ta’ mużika u drammi kienu jsiru biss fisswali jew kmamar tal-bereġ talKavallieri madwar il-Belt. Iżda wara li nbena t-teatru, dan l-istil t’arti rnexxielu jsib post fejn jista jifjorixxi, jikber u jolqot iktar nies. Illum it-Teatru Manoel huwa wkoll magħruf bħala wieħed mill-eqdem teatri fl-Ewropa u l-eqdem fil-Commonwealth li għadu jaħdem u jipproduċi avvenimenti għall-pubbliku. Matul l-istorja tiegħu t-Teatru Manoel ra bosta artisti, minn żmien il-Barokk s’issa, fosthom kantanti, mużiċisti, atturi u diretturi li onoraw lill-pubbliku bit-talenti brillanti tagħhom. Illum it-teatru għadu ċentru t’apprezzament għall-arti bilproduzzjonijiet eċċezzjonali u innovattivi tagħhom, kif ukoll ta’ żvilupp bi programmi t’edukazzjoni bħal TOI TOI. Din l-inizjattiva għenet u għadha tgħin lill-artisti żgħażagħ biex jiżviluppaw it-talenti tagħhom permezz ta’ masterclasses, workshops u produzzjoniet varjati. Kull sena, ittim tat-Teatru Manoel joħloq staġun mimli avvenimenti u produzzjonijiet li jolqtu udjenzi differenti, bħal kunċerti, opri, żfin u saħansitra musicals.

Teatru Manoel is one of the many jewels that the Maltese Islands has to offer. Built by the Knights Hospitaller of St John in 1731, this primo esempio of Baroque architecture opened its doors on 19th January 1732. Its construction was commissioned by Grandmaster Fra Antonio Manoel de Vilhena who paid for the building himself. Teatru Manoel is one of Europe’s oldest working theatres and is the oldest fully functioning theatre in the Commonwealth. Historically speaking, Teatru Manoel allowed the performing arts to flourish in the Maltese Islands. Before its construction, performances were relegated to the halls and piano nobles of the auberges of the Order situated in Valletta. The construction of the Teatru Manoel stage brought some of the finest voices, musicians, actors and theatre makers from the golden days of Baroque to the Theatre. Nowadays the Theatre continues to be a hub that cultivates an appreciation of the performing arts through the performances it offers on stage, but also through its learning and participation wing TOI TOI, that curates performances, workshops and masterclasses particularly targeting younger audiences, and performers who are still establishing themselves in the sector. The Theatre includes a varied cornucopia of performance throughout the year ranging from opera to dance.

Hon. Dr. Malcolm Paul Agius Galea Minister for Arts, Culture and the National Heritage

Huwa bi pjaċir li qed nilqgħu l-istaġun il-ġdid fit-Teatru Manoel, teatru li ilu parti mill-istorja kulturali ta’ Malta għal ġenerazzjonijiet sħaħ u li għad għandu post speċjali fil-qlub kemm tal-udjenzi kif ukoll tal-artisti.

It is a pleasure to welcome the new season at Teatru Manoel, a theatre that has been part of Malta’s cultural story for generations and continues to hold a special place in the hearts of audiences and artists alike.

Is-saħħa ta’ istituzzjoni kulturali ma titkejjilx biss mill-istorja li tippreserva, iżda wkoll mill-kapaċità tagħha li tibqa’ rilevanti għan-nies tal-lum u li tispira lil dawk li se jsawru l-kultura ta’ għada. It-Teatru Manoel għadu jagħmel dan b’mod ammirevoli, billi jirrispetta l-legat straordinarju tiegħu filwaqt li jiftaħ il-bibien tiegħu għal ideat, vuċijiet u esperjenzi artistiċi ġodda.

The strength of a cultural institution is measured not only by the history it preserves, but also by its ability to remain relevant to the people of today and to inspire those who will shape the culture of tomorrow. Teatru Manoel continues to demonstrate this beautifully, respecting its extraordinary legacy while opening its doors to new ideas, new voices and new artistic experiences.

Ħajja kulturali vibranti tiddependi fuq postijiet fejn in-nies jistgħu jinġabru, jiskopru, jirriflettu u jiġu ispirati. Tiddependi wkoll fuq l-udjenzi li jagħżlu li jipparteċipaw u fuq l-artisti li jingħataw l-opportunità li jikkreaw, itellgħu produzzjonijiet u joħolqu rabtiet ma’ oħrajn. Din hija r-raġuni għaliex l-istituzzjonijiet kulturali tagħna huma tant importanti għallħajja ta’ pajjiżna.

A vibrant cultural life depends on places where people can gather, discover, reflect and be inspired. It depends equally on audiences who choose to participate and on artists who are given the opportunity to create, perform and connect with others. This is why our cultural institutions matter so much to the life of our country.

Hekk kif ninsabu ħerqana għal staġun ieħor, inħeġġeġ lil kulħadd biex jagħmel l-aħjar użu minn dak li għandu x’joffri t-Teatru Manoel. Kemm jekk tkun qed tirritorna lejn forma ta’ arti familjari kif ukoll jekk qed tiskopri xi ħaġa ġdida, kull żjara hija opportunità biex tesperjenza l-arti b’mod differenti. Nifraħ lit-tim tat-Teatru Manoel u lil dawk kollha li se jikkontribwixxu għal dan l-istaġun u nawgura lil kulħadd sena memorabbli u sodisfaċenti.

4

As we look towards another season, I encourage everyone to make the most of what Teatru Manoel has to offer. Whether returning to a familiar art form or discovering something new, every visit is an opportunity to experience the arts in a different way. I congratulate the Teatru Manoel team and all those contributing to this season and I wish everyone a memorable and rewarding year ahead.

Dr. Luke Dalli Executive Chairman Arts Council Malta

It-teatru huwa wieħed mill-aktar spazji importanti fejn il-kreattività tieħu l-ħajja, fejn il-wirt kulturali jiltaqa’ mal-innovazzjoni u fejn l-arti tkompli tibni pontijiet bejn ilkomunitajiet u l-ġenerazzjonijiet.

The theatre is one of the most important spaces where creativity comes to life, where cultural heritage meets innovation, and where art connects communities and generations.

It-Teatru Manoel ilu għal snin twal simbolu ta’ eċċellenza artistika u ta’ impenn lejn il-kultura f’Malta. Kull staġun ġdid huwa opportunità biex din il-missjoni tkompli tissaħħaħ permezz ta’ produzzjonijiet li jispiraw, jisfidaw u jlaqqgħu flimkien lillpubbliku.

Teatru Manoel has been a symbol of artistic excellence and a commitment to culture in Malta for many years. Each new season presents an opportunity to enhance this mission through productions that inspire, challenge, and bring the public together.

Bħala żewġ istituzzjonijiet ewlenin fis-settur kulturali ta’ pajjiżna, ilKunsill Malti għall-Arti u t-Teatru Manoel jaqsmu responsabbiltà u viżjoni komuni, li nkomplu noħolqu l-kundizzjonijiet fejn l-artisti jistgħu jesperimentaw, jikbru u jilħqu l-potenzjal sħiħ tagħhom, filwaqt li nkomplu nressqu l-kultura lejn aktar nies.

As two major institutions in our country’s cultural sector, Arts Council Malta and Teatru Manoel share a common responsibility and vision, to continue to create an environment where artists can experiment, grow and realise their full potential, while making culture accessible to a wider audience.

Din hija relazzjoni li tmur lil hinn millkollaborazzjoni. Hija sħubija mibnija fuq fiduċja, impenn lejn l-eċċellenza artistika u l-konvinzjoni li l-investiment fil-kultura huwa investiment filkwalità tal-ħajja, fl-edukazzjoni, flinnovazzjoni u fil-komunitajiet tagħna. Aktar ma nkomplu nsaħħu din ilħidma flimkien, aktar inkunu qed nibnu settur kulturali b’saħħtu, sostenibbli u rilevanti għaż-żminijiet tal-lum. L-istaġun il-ġdid tat-Teatru Manoel jirrifletti din l-ambizzjoni, bi programm li jlaqqa’ flimkien tradizzjoni u kontemporanjetà, artisti stabbiliti u talenti emerġenti, produzzjonijiet lokali u kollaborazzjonijiet internazzjonali. Nawgura lit-tmexxija, lill-artisti, lillħaddiema u lill-pubbliku kull suċċess għall-istaġun li ġej. Ninsab fiduċjuż li, permezz tas-sħubija kontinwa bejn ilKunsill Malti għall-Arti u t-Teatru Manoel, inkomplu nagħmlu lill-kultura forza li tgħaqqad, tispira u tmexxi ’l quddiem lis-soċjetà tagħna.

This is a relationship that goes beyond simple collaboration. It is a partnership founded on trust, a commitment to artistic excellence and the belief that an investment in culture is an investment in our quality of life, education, innovation and communities. The more we continue to intensify this work together, the more we will be building a strong, sustainable and relevant cultural sector for today’s world. Teatru Manoel’s new season showcases an ambitious programme that blends tradition with contemporary themes, established artists alongside emerging talent, as well as local productions and international collaborations. I wish the management, artists, staff, and the public every success in the upcoming season. I am confident that, through the ongoing partnership between Arts Council Malta and Teatru Manoel, we will continue to make culture a force that unites, inspires and propels our society forward.

Edward Zammit CEO Teatru Manoel

Ftit li xejn hemm postijiet fejn l-istorja mhux biss titfakkar iżda tiġi esperjenzata. It-Teatru Manoel huwa wieħed minnhom.

There are very few places where history is not simply remembered but experienced. Teatru Manoel is one of them.

Għal kważi tliet sekli, kull ġebla, arkata u gallarija raw ġenerazzjonijiet ta’ artisti u udjenzi magħqudin permezz tal-esperjenza kondiviża ta’ wirjiet diretti. Mibni fl-1731 mill-Gran Mastru António Manoel de Vilhena, it-teatru għadda minn żminijiet ta’ tibdil iżda baqa’ fidil lejn l-iskop oriġinali tiegħu: dak li jarrikkixxi s-soċjetà permezz talkultura.

For almost three centuries, every stone, arch, and balcony has witnessed generations of artists and audiences united through the shared experience of live performance. Built in 1731 by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, the theatre has endured changing times while remaining true to its original purpose: enriching society through culture.

Kull żjara fit-Teatru Manoel hija laqgħa ma’ monument ħaj, fejn il-wirt u l-kreattività jeżistu id f’id. Bħala kustodji ta’ wieħed mill-eqdem teatri li għadhom attivi fl-Ewropa, aħna impenjati li nippreservaw dan il-legat notevoli filwaqt li niżguraw li jkompli jispira l-ġenerazzjonijiet futuri.

Every visit to Teatru Manoel is an encounter with a living monument, where heritage and creativity exist side by side. As custodians of one of Europe’s oldest working theatres, we are committed to preserving this remarkable legacy while ensuring that it continues to inspire future generations.

Dan l-impenn huwa possibbli bissaħħa ta’ tim straordinarju li d-dedikazzjoni tiegħu ħafna drabi tibqa’ mistura. Minn dawk li jippreservaw l-istruttura storika talbini sat-timijiet artistiċi, tekniċi, amministrattivi, it-timijiet talproduzzjoni, tal-komunikazzjoni, ilfront-of-house, u t-timijiet operazzjonali, kull wieħed u waħda minnhom għandhom rwol vitali fissostenn ta’ din l-istituzzjoni kulturali nazzjonali. Nixtieq ukoll niżżi ħajr mill-qalb lillartisti tagħna, l-organizzazzjonijiet kulturali, l-isponsors, il-persuni li jappoġġjawna, l-imsieħba tagħna, u, fuq kollox, lill-udjenzi tagħna. Kemm jekk qed tirritorna kif ukoll jekk qed iżżurna għall-ewwel darba, inti qed tkun parti minn storja li ilha kważi tliet sekli tinkiteb.

This commitment is made possible by an extraordinary team whose dedication often remains unseen. From those who preserve the historic fabric of the building to our artistic, technical, administrative, production, communications, front-of-house, and operational teams, each plays a vital role in sustaining this national cultural institution. My sincere thanks also go to our artists, cultural organisations, sponsors, supporters, partners, and, above all, our audiences. Whether returning or visiting for the first time, you become part of a story that is nearly three centuries in the making. Thank you for joining us as we celebrate our heritage and look confidently towards the future.

Grazzi talli qed tingħaqdu magħna biex niċċelebraw il-wirt tagħna u nħarsu b’kunfidenza lejn il-futur.

Charles Gounod’s Opera

ROMÉO ET JULIETTE Produzzjoni ġdida minn Teatru Manoel flimkien ma’ Malta National Opera tal-opra Roméo et Juliette tal-kompożitur Franċiż Charles Gounod, ibbażata fuq it-traġedja famuża ta’ William Shakespeare. Din l-opra, li ttellgħet għall-ewwel darba fl-1867, tirrakkonta mill-ġdid l-istorja ta’ Romeo u Ġuljetta, żewġ maħbubin li kellhom destin traġiku u li l-passjoni tagħhom tinqered minħabba l-ġlied antik bejn il-familji tagħhom. Il-partitura lirika ta’ Gounod tenfasizza r-romantiċiżmu, it-tenerezza u l-intensità emozzjonali, b’arji u dwetti komposti b’sengħa kbira għall-karattri ewlenin. B’differenza mid-dramm oriġinali ta’ Shakespeare, l-opra tiffoka aktar fuq l-intimità u l-vjaġġ emozzjonali talmaħbubin milli fuq il-kunflitt politiku. Fost l-aktar mumenti famużi tagħha nsibu x-xena tal-gallarija u d-dwett finali filkripta, fejn l-imħabba u l-mewt jingħaqdu flimkien b’qawwa kbira. Roméo et Juliette tibqa’ biċċa xogħol fundamentali firrepertorju tal-opra Franċiża.

Teatru Manoel and Malta National Opera’s new production of French composer Charles Gounod’s opera Roméo et Juliette, based on William Shakespeare’s famous tragedy. First performed in 1867, it retells the story of the star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet, whose passion is doomed by the feud between their families. Gounod’s lyrical score emphasises romance, tenderness and emotional intensity, with beautifully crafted arias and duets for the lead characters. Unlike Shakespeare’s original play, the opera focuses more on the lovers’ intimacy and emotional journey than on political conflict. Its most famous moments include the balcony scene and the final tomb duet, where love and death are powerfully intertwined. Roméo et Juliette remains a cornerstone of the French operatic repertoire.

F’nofs dan kollu hemm l-istatwa tal-Madonna tal-Ferħ, imsawra mill-maħbub Karmenu Seguna, qalb traġedji personali li ġrawlu. Seguna jsir simbolu ta’ perseveranza u bi ġrajjietu jirnexxielu joħloq reverenzà kbira lejn din l-istatwa. Simbolu u reverenzà, li mitt sena wara, Fr. Karl Seguna, dixxendenti u issa Arċipriet tal-istess raħal, qed isib diffikultà kbira biex iżomm. The winning play of the SFE intertwines the story of a gruesome crime that took place in Malta at the beginning of the twentieth century with the vibrant life of a Maltese village during festa week. At the heart of it all is the statue of Our Lady of Joy, sculpted by the beloved Karmenu Seguna amid the personal tragedies that befell him. Seguna becomes a symbol of perseverance, and through his story he succeeds in inspiring reverence for this statue which, a hundred years later, Fr Karl Seguna - a descendant of Karmenu and now Archpriest of the same village - is finding increasingly difficult to preserve.

21st MALTA SPRING FESTIVAL It must be!

Hekk kif noqorbu lejn il-200 anniversarju mill-mewt ta’ Beethoven fl-2027, il-motto “Must it be? It must be!”, li hu stess niżżel fuq il-partitura mill-aħħar moviment tal-Kwartett tal-Kordi tiegħu fil-Fa maġġuri, isir perspettiva xierqa li minnha nistgħu nisimgħu l-mużika tiegħu mill-ġdid. Kemm fl-intimità tal-Kwartetti talKordi, fid-djalogu liriku tas-Sonati għall-Vjolin, flenerġija intensa tas-Seba’ Sinfonija, kif ukoll fil-firxa traxxendenti tal-Kunċert għall-Vjolin, għal darba wara l-oħra niltaqgħu ma’ din it-tensjoni bejn il-mistoqsija u n-neċessità, il-libertà u d-destin. As we approach the 200th anniversary of Beethoven’s death in 2027, the motto “Must it be? It must be!” that he himself scribbled above the final movement of his String Quartet in F major, becomes an apt lens through which to hear his music anew. Whether in the searching intimacy of the String Quartets, the lyrical dialogue of the Violin Sonatas, the irrepressible energy of the Seventh Symphony, or the transcendent breadth of the Violin Concerto, we encounter again and again this tension between question and necessity, freedom and fate.

ANATOMY OF EFFORTS ŻfinMalta

ANATOMY OF EFFORT huwa xogħol ġdid talkoreografa u ħassieba kulturali Kolombjana/Kanadiża Andrea Peña, rebbieħa ta’ diversi premjijiet. Ispirat minn perspettivi queer u dekolonjali, ix-xogħol jesplora l-isforz bħala kundizzjoni kontemporanja u kif il-ġisem jinnegozja l-produttività, il-poter, l-aġenzija u l-appartenenza. Permezz ta’ moviment atletiku ħafna, ikkaratterizzat minn artikolazzjoni u preċiżjoni estremi, ix-xogħol jimbotta r-reżistenza fiżika lejn l-instabbiltà, u jikxef il-ġisem bħala spazju fejn l-awtonomija u l-koeżistenza jiġu kontinwament sfidati mill-ħtiġijiet ta’ soċjetà industrijalizzata ħafna. ANATOMY OF EFFORT is a new work by awardwinning Colombian/Canadian choreographer and cultural thinker Andrea Peña. Drawing on queer and decolonial perspectives, the piece explores effort as a contemporary condition, examining how bodies negotiate productivity, power, agency and belonging. Through a highly athletic movement language of extreme articulation and precision, the work pushes physical endurance towards instability, revealing the body as a space where autonomy and coexistence are continually challenged within the demands of a highly industrialized society.
