The Welsh Pavilion: Hall 16 Stand F30 This MediWales “Medica Special” Review is your introduction to the thriving medical technology sector in Wales. It includes editorial from both MediWales - the Welsh life sciences network - and the Welsh Government’s Life Sciences Team, with a directory of all companies attending the trade mission to Medica 2012. Several companies are represented further through case studies, providing a snapshot of some of the most exciting products and services being offered by Welsh medical technology companies.

dedicated to supporting companies in the sector, recognising that international trade is key to companies’ success.

Medica is the world’s largest and leading global exhibition for the medical sector, and has been established for over 40 years. It runs alongside the leading international fair for medical manufacturing supplies, Compamed. Together, Medica and Compamed occupy all 19 halls of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre and organisers expect more than 600 exhibitors from over 60 countries.

Representatives Debbie Laubach and Jess Fisher from MediWales, the Welsh life sciences network, will be on hand to support our indigenous companies to network with potential collaborators and distributors. Having been the sector’s network for over 20 years, MediWales generates a unique environment for networking, collaboration and communication between industry, academia and health service members. This is delivered through an active schedule of events and publications supported by the MediWales website and maintained via constant communication with stakeholders. Supported by the Welsh Government, MediWales is owned by its members and led by directors drawn from senior industrialists and academics in Wales.

This year’s Welsh delegates are supported by the Welsh Government to attend Medica. The most popular trade mission for Welsh life sciences companies, a record 60+ delegates are attending the Medica mission this year. A democratically elected body established in May 1999, the Welsh Government has devolved powers and is responsible for developing and implementing policies in Wales. Life sciences is a priority area for the Welsh Government and they have a team

With their own NHS Wales, the circa three million Welsh inhabitants receive healthcare through seven health boards. This unique and relatively small NHS provides Wales with the opportunity to develop quicker, leaner processes than its neighbours. Products can be trialled quicker, and the unrivalled connectivity between the NHS, companies and academia precipitates innovative product development, delivering better and timely patient care.

MediWales is a founder member of Medilink UK, a national health technology business support organisation that represents the interests of circa 3000 organisations across the UK.

Wales: Unrivalled ‘Unrivalled connectivity’ is a unique selling point for Wales’ life sciences sector, and this message is being voiced internationally. As a devolved nation of approximately three million people, with an independent National Health Service (NHS) and a thriving life science industry, Wales is aware of the opportunities being small offers.

The Welsh Government’s Life Sciences Sector Panel is currently exploring the benefits of establishing a new life sciences hub - a physical entity where stakeholders in the sector can meet and do business.

Accessing International trade markets: In order to carry Wales’ message as a location with unrivalled connectivity, Welsh companies are attending missions across the globe with the support of the Welsh Government.

By Jess Fisher, MediWales Already this year there have been missions to:

Developing the Welsh brand Selling Wales abroad extends beyond the individual company. MediWales has been working with Welsh Government and our Life Science Expert Advisory Group (LSEAG) to succinctly voice what makes Wales unique as a place to work in life sciences: We are small – the proximity between organisations means we can network easily, which can dramatically reduce the cost of doing business and speed up the delivery of new products and services. We are devolved – giving us the power to work on our companies’ needs within a purely Welsh context. We have a devolved NHS – allowing for a faster single coordinated permissions process and improving access to clinical expertise. Anonymised healthcare data for the whole population means that clinical trials can access 3 million people. Having a life science sector of significant value to the Welsh economy gives us a political voice and the support of our ministers, who work closely with us to enable growth. We have a dedicated Welsh Government life science sector team to help companies and academia develop.

For both Wales’ indigenous companies and those looking to set up or relocate to Wales, support accessing finance, clinical expertise and international trade markets is crucial.

Accessing finance:

Bio International Convention, Boston, USA, 18-21 June 2012 China International Medical Equipment Fair, China, 2-4 September 2012 Advamed, Boston, USA, 1-3 October 2012

Companies based in Wales can benefit from the UK Government’s offerings, such as tax breaks and the patent box initiatives, whilst also benefitting from support unique to Wales.

AusBio, Melbourne, Australia, 30 October – 2 November 2012

For instance, the Welsh Government’s £100 million Life Sciences Fund is soon to be operational. This commercial fund, delivered through independently assigned managers, should inspire Welsh companies and those looking to relocate to Wales to develop robust proposals. Similar to any commercial fund, only exceptional ideas demonstrating tangible return on investment will be successful. Initiatives such as these promote a competitive environment, key to survival and growth.

Next year, the Welsh life sciences community will also be represented at:

The Welsh Government currently invests over £40 million in National Health Service R&D every year. The Welsh Life Sciences Fund will complement this investment, helping keep commercial outcomes from funded R&D in Wales.

Medica, Dusseldorf, Germany, 14-17 November 2012

Arab Health, Dubai, UAE, 28-31 January 2013 China International Medical Equipment Fair, Shenzhen, China, 17-20 April 2013

Connectivity Accessing clinical expertise: The resounding message from Wales’ contract research and testing community is that Wales is open for business. With subsector strengths in wound healing, diagnostics and assistive technology and eHealth, this is the place to carry out your research and development (R&D). Companies understand that Wales not only offers a cost effective manufacturing base but houses the necessary skills, expertise and infrastructure to provide an excellent environment for research. Feedback from Advamed – the largest American health technology trade association – on the perception of Europe as a destination for R&D holds potential consequences for Wales. American companies’ experience infers that health technology trials and evaluations in Europe can be done at half the time and cost of those in America. The design and patient recruitment for studies is viewed as simpler, with a free healthcare system that naturally encourages greater patient engagement. This knowledge provides Wales with an opportunity to attract clinical trials/ evaluations and commercialisation of medical technologies from outside Europe due to its unique size, networks and devolved NHS. The following section takes a brief look at just a few of the organisations that make Wales such an attractive location to carry out R&D:

Health Research Wales The National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) is the Welsh Government body that develops strategy and policy for research in the NHS and social care in Wales. The NISCHR Academic Health Science Collaboration (AHSC) is part of the research infrastructure for Wales funded by NISCHR. It facilitates collaboration between NHS organisations, higher education institutions and the industry sector in Wales to support research excellence and create world-leading improvements in healthcare.

NISCHR AHSC hosts Health Research Wales - a vehicle to facilitate the effective set-up, management and delivery of commercial clinical research in Wales. It supports the development of productive relationships between commercial companies, universities and the NHS, demonstrating that Wales is a great place to do research. Health Research Wales will: Provide a single communication route for industry Offer support and guidance through the research process Signpost additional support and funding opportunities Facilitate quick and easy site identification including support in feasibility assessment

Cardiff University - Anaesthesia Innovation Anaesthesia Innovation (AI) is a new venture intended to pool together the academic expertise of Anaesthetics, Intensive Care and Pain Medicine with colleagues from the NHS, industry, other schools in Cardiff University and throughout the world. The aim is to forge links for developing successful novel, innovative products and provide a hub for clinically-relevant research. They have been involved in several innovative research projects, for instance the Hall Lock device - a collaborative project with Flexicare Medical Ltd, which has been CE marked, is in clinical trial, and in the process of being marketed. Another is the South West and South Wales Critical Care Alliance which was formed in 2011 to address a major unmet need in the treatment of sepsis, a major global killer with an estimated 18 million cases per annum. AI is split into 6 integrated sections: medical device testing; product development; user assessments; applying for charity and government funds; consultancy and simulation. Open for business, the institute welcomes contact from those wishing to initiate studies.

Calon Cardio-Technology Ltd (Calon) is developing a new generation of implantable micro-pump for the treatment of heart failure more commonly known as Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs). Current pumps have clinically proven that heart assist pumps are a safe and effective therapy. However, these devices have so far failed to exploit their huge market potential for two reasons: current products are too large requiring highly invasive surgery and they are expensive circ 115k USD. Calon’s technology aims to solve both problems as VADs are increasingly recognised as a viable long term treatment option. Their use has become routine in the USA and some EU markets to “bridge” transplant patients until a donor heart becomes available plus they are also gaining increased acceptance as long term alternatives to transplantation. Calon have assembled a team of world class suppliers and collaborators to take their vision to market.

E2L Products E2L are consulting design engineers, specialising in joint collaborations with organisations and individuals in the medical sector. With an ISO9001:2008 accredited design process and a flexible approach to project financing, E2L have a track record of converting clinical needs into market-ready products. One of their latest products, a dedicated Burns Hydration Calculator for determining fluid resuscitation, is to be launched at Medica 2012. Working in collaboration with a spinoff company from Abertawe Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust, the Welsh Centre for Burns, and Swansea University, E2L signed a licencing agreement to take the initial concept and develop a market ready product with full CE and MHRA compliancy. The clinical requirement for such a device comes from the error prone methods currently used, such as hand calculation, nomograms, or Apps, and their lack of accountability. Protocols such as ‘Parkland’ and ‘Muir & Barclay’ for defining hydration rates are well established but this new device has the ability to validate the user inputs, select the regime, and compensate for fluids already administered. Importantly,

the device issues a paper printout detailing the calculations, what the workings are, and requiring a doctor to sign them off. Having a paper trail provides a clear statement of what’s been done, and is clearly set out for a doctor to sign off, with a paper copy included in the patient’s notes. The design uses a touch screen with sound and pictures as the human interface, utilising error checking input routines to avoid any false data entry. Clinical evaluation work by D. Williams and J.Dingley, anaesthetists at the Dept. of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care, Morriston Hospital, has confirmed that the electronic

device has both speed and accuracy improvements over conventional methods. This project took E2L only two months in its entirety, without external funding, to achieve a market ready product.

FRIO UK An international, Pembrokeshirebased company, FRIO UK Ltd’s founders Garnet and Althea Wolsey invented the FRÍO® cooling wallet and sports and leisure ranges in the mid 1990s. FRÍO® cooling products are manufactured on-site using renewable energy supplying 100% of the factory’s energy requirements. FRÍO® wallets are patented, trademark protected, and available in 57 countries. The concept of using evaporation techniques for cooling purposes was developed and a number of cooling products ensued. FRÍO® cooling bands were utilized by British athletes at the Olympic Games in Atlanta, 1996. Later, Ferrari’s F1 team used the technology for body wear as an aid to keeping drivers cool. More recently, Ospreys Rugby trialed a scull-cap, which is now used nationwide. Their flagship product, the FRÍO® Insulin Cooling Wallet, underwent stringent testing by the British Medical Devices Evaluation Unit during 19961997. Subsequently, it was submitted to the FDA (USA), scrutinized and passed for sale. FRÍO® cooling wallets receive support from diabetes associations worldwide as well as the International Glaucoma Association and it’s widely recommended by GPs, diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs), hospitals, pharmacies and airlines. FRÍO® wallets rely on evaporation for cooling. For this purpose, durable and moisture manageable Polycotton and Cambrelle™ fabrics are used. Activated with water, the super-

absorbent polymer crystals contained within the lining of the wallet expand and form an efficient gel cooling pack. The FRIO® maintains safe storage temperatures for in-use insulin and other temperature sensitive medications for up to 28 days, even in constant environmental temperatures of 38°C. The wallets are re-useable, eco-friendly, lightweight and designed to suit all types and makes of insulin pumps, pens, standard refill cartridges and vials. The wallets are also used with eye drop bottles, hypokits, inhalers and adrenaline injectors. FRIO UK Ltd have received the following awards: Design Council’s Millennium Products Award for
