Demigods and Monsters: Stories

A child commits an unspeakable act against another child. A woman avails herself of the services of a love hospital to dispel her husband’s mistress. A former entertainer holds the fort of an aging village against encroaching wild animals and dementia. A controversial politician calls a press conference to explain his crimes and misdemeanors. A family living in an old house is plagued by poltergeists. These are some of the demigods and monsters who range across the troubled landscapes of the Philippines, Japan, China, Singapore, and the United States, and haunt this new collection of short fiction by the author of Recuerdos de Patay and Other Stories. Caroline S. Hau is Professor at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, Kyoto University, Japan.

The Elegant Ghost

In The Elegant Ghost, his fifth poetry collection, Carlomar Arcangel Daoana affirms his faith in the poetic language as a capacious medium through which the twin flames of perception and imagination intertwine. The Next Great Tagalog Novel

Ang Tatay Kong Cochero

Lahi yata kami ng cochero. Ang nuno ko na tatay ng lolo ko ang orihinal bagama’t hindi kotse ang pinapatakbo niya kundi isang kalesa. Ang sasakyang ito na hatak-hatak ng isang kabayo ay isa sa unang nagserbisyo sa bayan namin sa Silang. Isa siyang premyadong kuwentista, makata, at manunulat ng sanaysay. Nagtuturo din siya ng wika, malikhaing pagsulat, at kultura sa UP Diliman.

Ilang Sandali . . .

Hindi lungkot kundi pag-asa ang hatid ng mga tula ni Reagan Romero Maiquez sa koleksiyon. Nagpapahayag ang koleksiyong Sad-sadan, Happy-hapihan ng hindi nag-aalangang pagkukuwento ng pananaw-sadaigdig ng bakla. Hindi na ito ang may bahid ng pagkukubli (isipin na naisulat ito halos isang dekada na ang nakararaan) kung kaya maituturing na siyang pangunahing ambag sa fiction sa Filipino. Sa madaling sabi, ang ipinapahayag na politika nito sa kalahatan ay mapagpalaya. Hindi na pinagmumulan ng ligalig ang kaisipang bakla, na baka maging hindi katanggap-tanggap sa mambabasa ang kuwentong nabuo ng awtor. The Community Press and Its Revolutionary Tradition

It is systematic and scientific in gathering information through the use of indigenous methods that are appropriate to the Filipino experience. It has wide application in different aspects of Philippine life. Filipino psychology is a good example of an indigenous psychology in the world; in fact, it is one of the indigenous psychologies with a long history and significant achievements. This collection of articles aims to be an important reference material to further develop the scholarship and teaching in psychology. Living in Times of Unrest

Bartolome Pasion was born in 1928 to a tenant family in a traditional hacienda in Pampanga province, Philippines. In 1942, at the age of fourteen, he joined the left-wing antiJapanese guerrilla army, and later, the Communist Party of the Philippines (PKP) and its armed wing, the People’s Liberation Army (HMB). Bart Pasion’s life history delves into the lives of those Eric Hobsbawm refers to as “uncommon people … who collectively, if not as individuals … are major historical actors … who make a difference.” Eduardo C. Tadem is convenor, Program on Alternative Development of the University of the Philippines, Center for Integrative and Development Studies.
