THE JUNIOR BOARD PERSPECTIVE

mckenna rockow

Junior Board of Directors Vice President

Families from all across the country gathered at the Mower County Fairgrounds for yet another National Barrow Show- a weekend that holds many memories for individuals across the industry. Some there for a pig show and some there for the collegiate livestock judging contest. We welcomed exhibitors starting on Friday afternoon with trailer staging. Then, moved right into our first round of breed typing and check-in. It was so great to see all of our new exhibitors, returning exhibitors, and their families again after a wonderful National Junior Show. The team started bright and early on a beautiful Saturday morning for the final round of breed typing and check-in. While the barns filled up with the rest of the families, the stage was being set for an awesome day of showmanship and the gilt show. The judge for the weekend was Austin Langemeier, a former Team Purebred Junior Board member, from Lyons, South Dakota. We were thrilled to have Austin in the ring working with not just a good set of pigs but a great set of kids. We got to debut the new order of showmanship for the first time! Showmanship at the Team Purebred shows will now start with the novice age division and end with the senior age division. We followed up showmanship with 30 classes in the gilt show. Finally, it was time for the annual tradition of Barnyard Olympics! We set up two sets of obstacle courses and had a relay race between the two teams. There is nothing more fun for our team than ending a busy day interacting and building relationships with exhibitors. Sunday had a schedule full of the collegiate livestock judging contest and the barrow show. After the collegiate contest, Austin joined us back in the ring starting at 11am ready to sort the 26 classes of barrows. We rounded out the day with two high quality grand drives. The National Barrow show is always a favorite among our team and I finally get it. This was my first year as a board member at Barrow Show. As a second year, it’s safe to say that I wish I could come back as a board member!

The Junior Board Perspective

Team Purebred headed South to Cookville, Tennessee for our Music Drive Regional Show! After pigs moved in on Friday, we were ready for a full weekend of competition, activities, and a little friendly fun. Regional shows always bring a different pace and atmosphere, and this weekend gave us plenty to keep us busy both inside and outside of the show ring.

McKenna Rockow Junior Board of Directors Vice President

Saturday was packed with activities, starting with our sweepstakes contests and concluding with the gilt show. Exhibitors began by competing in our skillathon and livestock judging contests, putting their skills to the test. Next, they showcased their hard work and the partnership they formed with their pigs in showmanship. With 28 classes of gilts, there was plenty of action in the ring. Eventually it came time to trade in our whips for some fun at the Exhibitor Social! We kept things entertaining with a few rounds of musical chairs, a game of four corners, and temporary tattoos for everyone to enjoy. The exhibitor social is always a fun way to let loose after a busy day of showing, and this year's activities gave everyone a chance to join in on the fun. Sunday brought us back to the show ring for the barrow show, featuring 16 classes of barrows. We were excited to have AJ Genter from Archbold, Ohio, judge our show, with his son, Alec, helping him throughout the weekend. As part of the Music Drive tradition, our grand champions took home guitars, making the final drives even more special! We appreciate AJ and Alec taking the time to join us in Tennessee and be part of the weekend. Cookeville was a weekend full of fun, laughs, and memories made both in and out of the show ring! These are the weekends that make being part of Team Purebred so much fun. We’re thankful for everyone who came out and made it a great one, and we’re already looking forward to getting the crew back together in Stillwater this January. Until then, we’ll be holding on to the memories from Tennessee!

Skillathon Key

Hello Team Purebred exhibitors and families! My name is Shelbi McCray and I am ecstatic to be taking over as the Director of Junior Activities for Team Purebred! I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself. I was born and raised on my family’s grain and livestock operation in southern Illinois. I grew up showing pigs on the Illinois Club Pig Association circuit, the Illinois State Fair, and many Team Purebred events. I attended Southern Illinois University where I majored in Animal Science and Agribusiness Economics. I served on the Team Purebred Junior Board of Directors from 2023-2025. Those two years on the board truly changed my life. I was introduced to countless industry legends, learned how to thrive under pressure, and created countless memories that I will always cherish. Since retiring from the board I have been working part time for Team Purebred working with sponsors, running our social media accounts, editing The Junior Connection, and designing our banners and tshirts! Our fall regionals were outstanding and such a great way to kick off my new role! I cannot thank my Junior Board enough for their support and willingness to adapt. None of this would have been possible without them and my right hand woman, Jolee Taylor! I am so excited to be stepping into this role and look forward to what the future has in store for myself and Team Purebred!
