The Junior Board Perspective
Olivia Shike
2026 JUNIOR BOARD OF DIRECTORS PRESIDENT
The Team Purebred National Junior Show hosted at the state fairgrounds in Springfield, IL was another memorable event. Our Team Purebred families went all in for an incredible week filled with great pigs, beautiful weather, and even better exhibitors. We started off the week by getting our trailers staged and pigs unloaded throughout Sunday night and early Monday morning. A light rain through the evening has us starting off the week cool and in great spirits. Monday was stacked with activities; pigs were breed typed in the show ring, the cards were dealt at check in, and our exhibitors played their hand at the speech contests. We finished up the night with a game of barnyard olympics where everyone was trying to hit the jackpot! To kick off Tuesday morning, exhibitors competed in the ultimate high-stakes event of showmanship. Shortly following we saw some winning pairs drive through the ring in costume. Our families had the chance to play their luck to win big in our raffle by purchasing raffle tickets all day Tuesday. Next, exhibitors rolled the dice on the final two sweepstakes events of the skillathon and judging contest. A cheering crowd proved the odds were in favor of our winning SC volleyball team to conclude Tuesday evening. Finally, Wednesday morning was gilt day. Exhibitors brought their aces to ring, competing to win them all in the Champion Gilt Drive. Thursday, our families put their final cards on the table, competing for a spot in the Champion Barrow Drive. That evening we gathered ringside to place our bets on the future of Team Purebred, through the sale of our very first Tamworth foundation female. Before cashing out, our retiring board members were recognized for two years of dedicated service and a lasting legacy. One of the most meaningful moments Thursday evening was recognizing our Director of Junior Activities Chelsea Schminke Grieder as she leaves the table, for always betting on the success of our juniors and leading our organization through several winning hands. After the final chips were counted, results were shared and four individuals won Champion Sweepstakes honors. What happens in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but the competition, memories, friendships, and laughter from this show will last forever.
